Vor vier Jahren meldeten sich NEW MODEL ARMY mit dem ganz starken und zornigen Album „From Here“ zurück, aber die weltweite Pandemie machte ein Jahr später der geplante Tour zum 40jährigen Jubeleum der Band einen Strich durch die Feierlichkeiten. Zwar gab es danach noch eine Tour im vorigen Jahr, aber es war nicht wirklich das, was es hätte sein sollen und zum Beispiel spielte die Band in Dresden vor fast leerer Halle. Parallel dazu hatten NEW MODEL ARMY jedoch noch ein anderes Projekt namens „Sinfonia“ am laufen, für das ihre langjährige Gastviolinistin Shic-Ran Yinon 21 ausgewählte Songs der Band für ein Orchester umarrangierte. Die Umsetzung erfolgte dann zusammen mit dem Sinfonia Leipzig Orchester unter der Leitung von Cornelius During, welche am 22.07.2022 im Tempodrom in Berlin aufgeführt wurde. Gemäß dem hohen Anspruch, den Justin Sullivan an das Wirken von NEW MODEL ARMY hat, untermalt dabei das Orchester nicht nur einfach einen normalen Auftritt der Band (wie damals bei METALLICA), sondern hier wurde sich richtig Mühe gegeben bzw. Herzblut verwendet. Bei so einem Klassik Meets Rock-Projekt lauern ja immer zwei Gefahren: Ein zu viel an orchestraler Pathetik und ein zu sehr vom typischen Band-Sound. Bei „Sinfonia“ verschmilzt die klassische Instrumentierung des Orchesters glücklicherweise völlig homogen mit dem Rock-Sound der Band und erschuf in dieser Kombination ein wirklich beeindruckend-faszinierendes Live-Erlebnis! Auch bei der Song-Auswahl hat man es sich nicht einfach gemacht und verzichtet fast völlig auf die großen Hits & Singles von NEW MODEL ARMY. Trotzdem ist das Ergebnis euphorisch mitreißend und insbesondere die Paarung der Band-Drums mit den Orchester-Schlagwerk regelrecht martialisch-bombastisch. Natürlich wäre der für „Sinfonia“ betriebene Aufwand für nur eine Aufführung bzw. Konzert absolut zu schade gewesen, weshalb der Auftritt in Bild und Ton mitgeschnitten wurde und jetzt in den verschiedenen Formaten ausgewertet wird. Der 3LP- und 2CD-Ausgabe hat man in der Erstauflage daher auch jeweils eine DVD des Konzertes zur Seite gestellt. In der auf 1000 Exemplare limitierten Photo Buch-Edition liegt neben der regulären Doppel-CD + DVD noch eine parallele Blu-ray und eine Bonus-Live-CD vom 17.07. im SO36 in Berlin bei. Diese ist wohl allerdings nur direkt über die Band erhältlich. „Sinfonia“ dürfte eines der besten Live-Dokumente des Jahres und ebenso ein Highlight in der schon langen Diskografie von NEW MODEL ARMY darstellen! Müde ist eine Band aus Berlin. Sie spielen düsteren Punk, der auf ihrem kürzlich erschienenen Tape ordentlich scheppert. Die ursprüngliche Veröffentlichung ist schon drei, vier Monate her, d.h. war Ende April 2023. Die Auflage von 50 Stück ist sogar schon vergriffen. Um diese Rezension schreiben zu können, also ein Tape von Müde zu bekommen, musste ich dann auch etwas warten. Die Nachfrage war scheinbar größer als gedacht.

Erschienen ist das Tape auf „Lärm & Gestalt“, ein, nach Selbstauskunft: „unabhängiger Verlag mit Schwerpunkt Popkultur“. In der Presseinfo zum Tape von Müde steht: „Unsere erste musikalische Veröffentlichung: Das vier Songs umfassende Demotape von MÜDE! Es ist wunderbar düsterer Deutschpunk, irgendwo zwischen dem spröden und stoischen Hardcore von Chaos Z und den melodischen Tendenzen von EA80, Criminal Code oder den Wipers angesiedelt, mit Texten, die als tröstlicher Begleiter für die allseits gefürchteten Wintermonate (ihrer Heimatstadt) Berlin dienen könnten“.

Ja, da sind sie wieder. Die zwei dem Genre des Düster-Punks entsprechenden Referenzgruppen, die auch ich bisher immer zu Rate gezogen habe, wenn eine Band einsortiert werden musste. Doch stimmt der Vergleich? Taugt er, wenn man bedenkt, dass sich die eine Bezugsband in der Verwaltung des im Nachhinein gewachsenen Kultes übt und spät eine Doppel-LP herausgebracht hat, die mehr nach dem Nachfolgeprojekt klingt als nach dem, was da Kult geworden ist? Und sich die andere mittlerweile auf Konzerten über Raucher in der ersten Reihe im Stile eines ältlichen Morrissey beschwert?

Nun, vielleicht muss das so sein, vielleicht ist das der fortschreitenden Zeit, dem Zeitgeist geschuldet, den Mechanismen des Musik-Marktes, der Veränderlichkeit und Anpassung fordert, dem nachkommt, wer aufregend sein will. In Zeiten der Auflösung des sicher Gedachten, des Einbruchs von Grenzen, die irgendwo anders neu gezogen werden, des Nicht-Aushalten-Könnens von Ambivalenzen, wo es seltsamerweise kein Grau mehr gibt, sondern nur noch ein Weiß oder Schwarz, ein Richtig oder Falsch, die Aufforderung zur Positionierung. Immer im Wissen moralisch im Vorteil zu sein und die eigene Position von anderen konsequent einzufordern, also gemäß dem Einerseits Andererseits, Entweder Oder … Kann es da noch so etwas wie ein Zaudern, Nachdenken, Hin- und Hergerissen-Sein geben? Kann da über Zweifel, Verzweiflung, über Brüche und Widersprüche, Taumel und Schwanken gesungen werden? Und überhaupt, kann die Zuordnung überhaupt noch über ein Genre vorgenommen werden, wenn Spotify-Playlisten nach den Aktivitäten der Hörerschaft, also abseits jeglicher Genrezugehörigkeit sortiert, einspeist und vorgibt? Nun schauen wir uns das bei Müde mal an:

Das erste selbstbenannte Stück klingt wegen des Gesangstils zunächst nach einer Band von Jens Rachut. Auch das musikalisch Energetische dieses und der anderen drei Titel passt da gut ins Bild. Textlich wird andererseits aber auch klar, dass es hier keine politischen Botschaften oder klare Positionierungen gibt, sondern eher Verzweiflung und die Feststellung der Ausweglosigkeit eines Menschen, der den Weg, den er eingeschlagen hat, entweder wohl oder übel bis ans Ende gehen muss, oder an der unabänderlichen Richtung eben verzweifelt und zum Stillstand kommt: „Müde und leer … Viel zu müde, um mich all dem zu entziehn“.

Auch das zweite Stück „Eisnebel“ verfolgt textlich diesen Ansatz. Hier heißt es: „Alles bleibt, wie es ist … Ich fühle nichts, Ich fühle nichts …“. Der dritte Titel „Vergessen“ klingt musikalisch dann nach Fliehende Stürme, also nach einem Stück aus der Frühzeit der Band, als die Beziehung zu Chaos Z noch hör- und spürbar war. Und schließlich haben wir mit „Zwickmühle“ einen Titel, der durchaus ins Bein geht und sogar auf der 7inch, die der EA80-LP „Zweihundertzwei“ von 1990 beilag, hätte gewesen sein können.

Hier kann also durchaus die Nähe zu den Referenzen festgestellt werden. Doch bleibt eine Zuordnung wage. Müde ist schließlich ein Zwischenzustand. Da ist wer nicht mehr ganz da, aber auch noch nicht weg. Da gibt es immerzu auch ein Dahinter, ein Drunter und Drüber, ein Hinaus, und etwas In-sich-Gekehrtes. Kein Entweder Oder, sondern gleichzeitig ein Nein und ein Ja. Im Ganzen ein ambivalentes Bild, auf dem noch nicht absehbar ist, ob die Sonne oder der Stern auf- oder eben untergeht. (awk)

This year saw one of the most triumphant comebacks in recent memory – after a near decade absence, goth rock/post-punk icon Siouxsie Sioux returned to the stage for a series of shows that were rapturously received by legions of adoring fans. Commemorating the occasion was the release of a brand-new tribute album, Spellbound – A Tribute To Siouxsie & The Banshees, that offered a thrilling glimpse of how the next generation of underground artists from Kap Bambino to The KVB, Night Beats and R. Missing, have assimilated Siouxsie’s influence into their own sound. However, one of the most exciting tracks on the album actually came from a former member of Siouxsie’s band, Jon Klein, who teamed up with veteran post-punker Jah Wobble on a jaw-dropping version of “Monitor.”

Originally released on the now classic album Juju (1981), an album recorded prior to Klein’s entrance into Siouxsie’s coven, “Monitor” laid down the blueprint for a musical style that combined the sinister energy of punk rock with the complex subtleties of art rock. Klein and Wobble’s version turns the ragged power of Juju‘s guitarist John McGeoch into a massive wall of distortion while stunningly incorporating Asian influences courtesy of Chinese harpist and the track’s vocalist Yijia Tu.

It’s a feat that only these two musical wunderkinds could pull off, and certainly the kind of sonic alchemy that Siouxsie herself could appreciate.

Klein, reflecting on his many performances of the song as a Banshees, adds “‘Monitor’ was always one of my favourite songs to play. On tour, we would sometimes ask the road crew to vote for which song should be the show’s encore. The crew (AKA the Road Filth) would always vote for ‘Monitor’.”

Electro-Industrial music producer and artist, Miss FD has released the music video for her track, “Distractions”.

The first video directed by Azalea Jeanette showcases an erratic fusion of cyber aesthetics and contrasting natural environments. “While working on the music video for ‘Distractions'”, states Azalea Jeanette, “I enjoyed creating an aesthetic and narrative based around the three different personalities presented by Miss FD in this song.”

The “Distractions” video presents a visually intermittent journey through a cyberpunk dreamscape. The video features a blend of surreal locations including a neon-lit, pulsing, cyber light tunnel, a blackout room adorned with whimsical illustrations by comic book artist, Chandra Free and breathtaking ocean scenes symbolizing the profound connection between humanity and the natural world.

Ein neues THE CURE-Album? Fehlanzeige und obwohl seit Jahren angekündigt, wird es wohl auch in diesem Jahr nicht mehr erscheinen. Dafür geht es aber in der Wiederveröffentlichungs-Reihe des Back-Kataloges weiter und nach der wunderbaren Deluxe-Ausgabe von „Wish“ folgt nun das Live-Album „Show“. Dieses war nach „Concert“ und „Entreat“ 1993 das dritte reguläre Live-Dokument der Band und wurde auf der „Wish“-Tour in Amerika mitgeschnitten. Neben Titel des damals aktuellen und sehr erfolgreichen Albums, bietet die Setliste überwiegend die bis dahin großen Hits von THE CURE und repräsentiert damit mehr die poppiger Seite von Robert Smith & Co. Songs wie „High“, „Picture Of You“, „Lullaby“, „Just Like Heaven“, „Doing The Unstruck“, „Friday I’m In Love“, „Let’s Go To Bed“ und „Inbetween Days“ stehen exemplarisch für die „bunte“ Seite von THE CURE, werden hier jedoch auch von psychedelisch-dunklen Titeln wie „Open“, „From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea“ oder „End“ flankiert. „Show“ ist somit fast schon wie ein Best Of-Album, welches jetzt von Robert Smith und Miles Showell in den Abbey Road Studios für die neue Vinyl-Auflage remastert wurde. Warum man allerdings bei dieser Gelegenheit nicht auch parallel wieder eine Deluxe-CD-Ausgabe oder DVD mit dem kompletten Konzert veröffentlicht wird, empfinde ich als sehr schade. Damals erschien „Show“ nämlich auch auf VHS und dort waren weitere 5 Zugabe-Songs enthalten. Trotzdem hat natürlich das neue Doppel-Vinyl seine Berechtigung, denn das Original von 1993 ist inzwischen kaum und wenn, dann nur zu Höchstpreisen zu finden. Die aktuelle Pressung im Single-Cover mit den zwei schweren schwarzen Platten in OIS kann man als solide und gut bewerten. Optisch orientiert man sich fast identisch an der Ausgabe von 1993, hat dabei allerdings auf den abgehobenen Lackeffekt des Tesafilms beim Cover-Motiv verzichtet und erhält somit den Wert des Originals! „Show“ war und ist ein zeitloses Live-Dokument einer großen ikonischen Band, die immer noch emsig und ausufernd tourt, aber eben auch knausrig mit wirklich neuen Material ist! Da hatte ich mir vor kurzem die Werkschau „Staub“ von RALF SCHMIDT alias IC Falkenberg bestellt, übrigens eine Veröffentlichung mit einer Sammlung von auserwählten „Perlen“ und nicht so bekannten Songs aus den großartigen 17 Studio Alben des Künstlers, da entdeckte ich noch eine musikalisch so ganz andere Platte von „IC“. Kurz vorab dazu gesagt : Folgt man der herkömmlichen Definition von Popmusik, ist das hier eigentlich keine! Denn hier handelt es sich um eine reine „IC“ Instrumental CD „Pianosa“ mit 12 filigranen und zeitlosen sowie modernen Piano Neo Klassik Stücken, so etwas hätte ich in der Tat wahrlich nicht erwartet. Den „IC“ ist ja seit jeher für grandiose, eingängige und elegische Pop und Rocksongs und intelligente Texte bekannt und hatte in der Ex DDR mit „Traumarchiv“ und „Zigeuner auf Zeit“ zwei Topalben über das ehemalige Kultlabel Amiga veröffentlicht. Fantastisch war übrigens auch die „Delta Dreams“ aus 1989 mit ANDREAS BICKING. Aber auch die Single Hits wie „Mein Herz“ oder „Mann im Mond“ machten Ralf Schmidt damals über die Grenzen hinweg auch bei uns bekannt und bei mir sowieso, da wir zu Weihnachten immer Post „von Drüben“ bekamen und meist war der Inhalt auch eine LP von allerlei DDR Künstlern. RALF SCHMIDT / „IC“ also aus Halle/Saale war vor der Solokarriere bei STERN MEISSEN ( die gaben ca. 150 Konzerte im Jahr ) , damals einer sehr bekannten Band der DDR und produzierte hier 2 Alben mit, ab 1985 startete er dann seine Solokarriere  und brachte auch hierbei viele großartige, erfolgreiche und künstlerisch wertvolle Platten heraus. Und nun diese verträumte, romantische Klavierplatte, die das Portfolio von „IC“ gleich mal um ein vielfaches erweitert und die mich an artverwandte Künstler wie R. SAKAMOTO, DIRK MAASSEN, LAMBERT, BRIAN/ROGER ENO, YANN TIERSEN, NILS FRAHM, FEDERICO ALBANESE, LUDOVICO EINAUDI, OLAFUR ARNALDS, HANIA RANI, MARTIN KOHLSTEDT, MAX RICHTER und vielen anderen aus dem sogenannten Neo Klassikbereich erinnert. Einige malerische Titel hätten sogar das Zeug zum Filmscore oder würden etwaige Künstlervernissagen musikalisch emporheben. Auf dieser melancholischen Platte atmet Ralf direkt die intimen Klanglandschaften mit jeder Pore seines Körpers ein und ihn am Klavier zu hören ist für mich eine wahre Offenbarung. Die Tracks fließen gerade zu mal fordernd, lebenslustig, demütig, tieftraurig dem geneigten Hörer entgegen, die Platte ist daher wohl auch am Besten unter Kopfhörer zu inhalieren. Ganz großer Tip für alle, die noch nostalgische Klavierkompositionen zu schätzen wissen und einmal der stressigen Zeit entfliehen wollen.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis returned to Australia for 16 shows last year, taking their 2021 album ‘Carnage’ on the road, along with songs from the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds catalogue. 

Three performances at the Sydney Opera House on December 16th, 17th and 18th were the climactic shows of an emotional trip, captured for a new live album, ‘Australian Carnage – Live At The Sydney Opera House’.

The album will be released on digital and streaming services this Friday 25th August, with an 8 track vinyl to follow December 1st.

The Bunker Tapes VOL III brings The Bunker Tapes trilogy to its conclusion. The trilogy was envisioned to represent a fictitious 30 year career of a band that never really existed, covering influences from 1994 – 2024. 

The Bunker Tapes VOL III covers themes of loss from the pandemic and real world virus that took millions of lives from us. The opening track On The Run explores the world we wrap ourselves in to conform and fall in line. The world in which we struggle to find ourselves and as we fight against the system to be an individual yet still we easily are swayed into to towing the line and playing our part. We are constantly on the run from who we truly are.

 

 

About The Bunker Tapes Trilogy:
The trilogy see the start clearly rooted in early 90s Belgium and German EBM and Dark Electro with influences from Leather Strip, Skinny Puppy and Wumpscut. This is the music that SPANKTHENUN would’ve been making in the early 90s if the band existed back then. The second volume see’s that influence move towards the early 2000’s influences, adding in influences from new styles and sub-genre’s of industrial music. The final volume finds itself showcasing a more refined yet minimal sound, that is clearly influence by more modern approaches to dark dance music. Less four on the floor and more musical, yet simple.

The trilogy of The Bunker Tapes was conceived in the early 2020s just as the reality of the global pandemic was first settling in. the band envisioned a future where everything is destroyed and hundreds of years from now archeologists are digging in the dirt and find the ruins of Glitch Studios where SPANKTHENUN has recorded all of their work. They discover a long lost collection of digital audio tapes in this underground bunker and call them The Bunker Tapes.

Tracks like “This Is Not A Drill” and “Desolation Unknown” explore the daily roller coaster of emotions and uncertainty that we dealt with each day during the pandemic. Tracks like “The Wretched” and “Madman” place the blame on our leaders and on ourselves for putting them in power.

The album wraps with “Fuck The Apocalypse” (a fan favorite of the live shows) which just says we have had enough. We know it is real, but it’s time to rebuild and put it all behind us. Maybe we will get it right this time.

For the first two Bunker Tapes albums SPANKTHENUN enlisted the talents of the legendary Claus Larsen of Kulte and Leather Strip fame. The third album the enlisted the talents of Claus Larsen’s right hand man John Mirland to mix and master the new album.

SPANKTHENUN is a band born into the apocalypse with their first album released at the beginning of 2020 and built upon the embers of living thre a truly global pandemic. Their influences might have originally been from fiction and sci-fi incluences… but this band was abruptly awaken by the fact that the virus and the panic is real and we are living it now. This is not some story in a book.

The band has adapted to the digital tools and built their fan base on digital platforms, finally turning it into real life face to face interactions through their live shows in 2022 and 2023. Stonercore geniuses Håndgemeng are high-octane doom 'n'roll straight from the Norwegian tundra. Formed in Oslo in 2017, the members played together in various hardcore and punk bands in the early days, but the puzzle pieces didn’t come together until the riffs got slower and the amps got louder. Following up their early “Motorcycle Death Cult” and “Grim Riffer” EPs and playing shows constantly, the band wrote and recorded "Ultraritual," which offers a forceful, hard-hitting and spacey heavy rock journey over eight songs and millions of years, ready to enthuse fans of Mantar, Kvelertak or Domkraft. Das hat sich der Burgherr des Schloss Broichs in Mülheim an der Ruhr auch gedacht und so öffnet auch dieses Jahr am 30.06 und 01.07, der Burghof seine Tore, um mit euch zu feiern! Und noch könnt ihr dabei sein, denn es sind noch wenige Restkarten zu haben um dieses Festival zu erleben.

Euphorisch wurden DEPECHE MODE in Leipzig empfangen, beim Konzert mit 70.000 Zuschauern. Die Memento Mori-Welttournee von DEPECHE MODE kam nun auch in Deutschland an. Die zweistündige Show avancierte für uns Fans zu einer Achterbahn der Gefühle. Songs vom neuen Album, selbstverständlich jede Menge ihrer #1-Songs wurden gemeinsam zelebriert. Die Hauptakteure Dave Gahen und Martin Gore zeigten sich in Hochform und absoluter Spielfreude und bester Laune. Zu "World In My Eyes" und "Waiting For The Night To Come" wurde an den vor einem Jahr verstorbenen Andy Fletcher erinnert. - Wahre Gänsehautmomente und fliessende Tränen.
