This chic white, rose-embellished beauty offers an auditory experience and an exclusive 19-track compilation cassette, C23, teeming with unreleased tracks from Dais’ eclectic artist roster.

A Look into the Past with a Modern Lens

Dais Records, the bastion of sonic innovation and visual prowess, has always celebrated the rich tapestry of music’s past while pushing its boundaries. It’s no wonder, then that this collaboration with Retrospekt feels so apt. With Retrospekt’s mission of “Reviving retro tech for a new generation,” the two giants seem to be in harmony.

Dais co-founders Gibby Miller and Ryan Martin wax poetic about the days when the tactile pleasure of cassettes reigned supreme. For them, the cassette isn’t a relic but a timeless piece.

Martin is adamant about the format’s enduring potency:

“Cassettes aren’t nostalgic, they’re relevant. Making a mix tape for a friend or love interest is a talismanic offering. It’s a reaching out, a sharing of discovery.”

For Miller, too, cassette culture was seismic; he continues to see singular strengths in the limitations of older technologies:

“Having a device solely dedicated to music may seem unique to a person today, but there’s also a purity in it. The ritual of hitting play. Feeling the hum of the machine. Flipping at the end of the side. Tapes changed everything for me.”

Retrospekt’s journey, spearheaded by Adam and Kori Fuerst, echoes this sentiment. Starting with refurbishing vintage cameras, they expanded their offerings to include tape players, Game Boys, and other nostalgic tech wonders.

 “These vintage machines aren’t obsolete – they still provide pleasure and enjoyment,” says Adam. “More and more people today realize this, and they want to have an organic, intentional experience without their metadata being tracked by some corporation.”

The Craft Behind the Cassette Player

Nathaniel Young, Dais’ in-house creative maven, has meticulously redesigned the CP-81, ensuring that both the player and packaging exude a touch of minimalist elegance. This edition is bundled with Dais headphones, ensuring that listeners experience the compilation tape, C23, in all its glory.

Das DARK EASTER METAL MEETING geht 2024 in eine neue Runde: Am 30. und 31. März 2024 wird im Münchner Backstage wieder auf drei Bühnen gefeiert, wobei es bei den Acts der beiden Hauptbühnen im Werk sowie in der Halle keine Überschneidungen geben wird. Auftreten sollen insgesamt 32 Bands, darunter auch die neu hinzugekommenen PSYCHONAUT 4 und EIS. Letztere haben zudem eine besondere Jubiläumsshow angekündigt und spielen das Album “Galeere” in voller Länge.

Weiterhin bestätigt haben die Organisatoren zuvor SODOM, die ein spezielles “80er Oldschool-Set” vorbereiten werden. Außerdem wurden KAMPFAR, NOCTE OBDUCTA, THY CATAFALQUE, TAAKE, CHAPEL OF DISEASE, PERCHTA sowie JESAJAH für die neue Auflage gewonnen.

Auftreten werden außerdem DYMNA LOTVA, BENEDICTION, MORK, NORDJEVEL sowie THEOTOXIN.

Tickets für die elfte Auflage des Indoor-Festivals gab es ab 25. September 2023 (17:00 Uhr) zum Early-Bird-Tarif. Der reguläre Vorverkauf startete am 13. November 2023 u.a. über backstage.eu; Tagestickets sind nicht vorgesehen.

In den neun Jahren nach “Kapitel II: Faen i Helvete” hat sich das Line Up-Karussell bei DEN SAAKALDTE wieder tüchtig gedreht. Mittlerweile bedient Skoll (ARCTURUS, VED BUENS ENDE) den Bass und Svik sorgt für genregetreues, heiseres Schwarzmetallkreischen. Auf dem vierten Album der Norweger klebt wieder der TNBM-Kleber und “Pesten som tar over” hält sich eisern an die Stilvorlagen, da gibt es keine Experimente und keine Rebellion (gewollte Ironie? Wer weiß…). 

Solider norwegischer Black Metal
DEN SAAKALDTE bieten auf “Pesten som tar over” dann auch soliden norwegischen Black Metal ohne Überraschungsmomente. Hier ein Fingerzeig zu neueren (aber nicht ganz neuen) DARKTHRONE-Zeiten, dort eine Parallele zu TAAKE. Trotz dieser Parallelen tun DEN SAAKALDTE zwei Dinge nicht, die die anderen genannten Truppen sehr wohl tun: Mal aus dem Rahmen fallen, mal überraschen, mal anecken. Das ist nicht bei DEN SAAKALDTE anno 2023. “En Ode til Spinnersken” vermag als einziges, einen gewissen Wiedererkennungswert für sich abzubuchen, da DEN SAAKALDTE hier auf hymnische Passagen und teilweise cleanen Männerchor-Gesang auf Norwegisch setzen. Ansonsten rauscht “Pesten som tar over” wohlproduziert am geneigten Black Metaller-Ohr vorüber – solide Arbeit, aber angesichts der üppigen kreativen Konkurrenz bei weitem kein Pflichtkauf.

Die italienische Symphonic Metal-Band AQVILEA hat mit “New World Era” den Titeltrack ihres kommenden Album als Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Bereits im Februar ist mit “Activm” eine erste Vorab-Single erschienen.

“New World Era” setzt thematisch beim 2020er-Debütalbum “Beyond the Elysian Fields” an. Während sich das Debütalbum mit Gründungsgeschichten beschäftigte, erzählt das neue Album von den entscheidenden Momenten der römischen Stadt Aquileia während ihres Übergangs von der Res Publica zum Imperium.

“New World Era” wurde von Fredrik Nordström im Fredman Studio produziert. Ein Release-Termin steht noch aus.

Die Psychedelic Stoner Rock-Band ROBOTS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD hat nach dem Opener “Hindu Kush” mit “Holy Ghost” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “3737” veröffentlicht.. Es ist nach “Cosmic Riders” (2019) und “Mystic Goddess” (2021) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Portland.

“3737” wurde von Billy Anderson gemixt, von Justin Weis gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Zaiusart ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 17. November 2023 via Small Stone Recordings.

ROBOTS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD sind Sänger Caleb Weidenbach, die Gitarristen Nico Schmutz und Justin Laubscher, Bassist Trevor Berecek sowie Drummer Harry Silvers (HIPPIE DEATH CULT).

VampireFreaks Announces: Dark Force Fest, 2024.

VampireFreaks announces Dark Force Fest 2024, America’s largest 3-day gothic-industrial music festival and convention. Dark Force Fest will be held April 19th – 21st, 2024 in Parsippany, New Jersey.
 
Dark-alternative music fans worldwide are gearing up for over 30 top international gothic and industrial bands, including influential classic acts as well as hot new artists that are bringing newfound interest to goth-industrial music.  
 
In addition to live bands on two stages, Dark Force Fest also features drag queen performances, sideshow acts, a live bats exhibit, band meet-and-greets, DJ club events, 100+ vendors, panels, presentations, meet-ups, food trucks, and spooky crafting activities.
 
Dark Force Fest takes place in Parsippany, NJ (1 hour from New York City), where goths from around the world congregate and take over the massive castle-themed Sheraton Parsippany—including 44,000 square feet of event space and all 370 hotel rooms. The castle will be adorned in gothic décor and art installations for an immersive experience. Rooms in the main venue sold out within 2 days of announcing the dates, but there are still overflow hotels in the area.

Stabbing Westward
Stabbing Westward rose to great heights in the mid-’90s alternative boom with their unique brand of industrial rock music, with two gold albums and numerous hit singles. Formed in 1986 by Walter Flakus and Christopher Hall, the band went from underground cult sensation to the heights of critical and commercial success thanks to songs such as “Shame,” “Save Yourself,” “So Far Away” and “What Do I Have to Do?”. To this day, these songs remain anthems of heartache, dejection, rage, betrayal and depression.
 
Nitzer Ebb
Britain’s Nitzer Ebb is one of the most influential acts associated with the EBM (electronic body music) scene, as well as alternative dance in general. Since the early ’80s, the group (led by enthusiastic frontman Douglas McCarthy) has produced an aggressive, visceral brand of electronic music. The group remains best known for the classic, “Join in the Chant,”—a single taken from 1987’s That Total Age—which became a staple of dance clubs from Ibiza to Detroit.
 
The  Crüxshadows
The Crüxshadows is an American darkwave band that formed in Florida in the 1990s. Known for their unique fusion of electronic, gothic, and synth-pop elements, the band is led by Rogue (their iconic frontman, vocalist, and songwriter). Blending synthesizers, violins, & guitar with passionate and introspective lyrics, The Cruxshadows has generated a unique signature all its own. Over the years, they have defied the odds by topping the Billboard charts in the United States, as well as the DAC and Media Control Charts in Europe.

In the quaint streets of Belgium, Bram Droulers, a fervent film enthusiast (and filmmaker), cultivated an appreciation for the brooding tones of darkwave and post-punk. His early inclinations leaned towards the stylings of 80s Berlin-era artists such as David Bowie, Siouxsie Sioux, and Joy Division. This fervour was only intensified by encounters with the enigmatic rhythms of 2010s revival bands like Lebanon Hanover, Molly Nilsson, and Selofan.

A half-decade stint in London’s goth milieu refined his musical palette, transitioning seamlessly from This Mortal Coil to the ethereal Cocteau Twins. This evolution has informed the inspirations behind his impending gothic darkwave release, “Problème De Normalité,” with nods to the likes of Nico, Xmal Deutschland, and Malaria!

Skirting the edges of raw, unadulterated punk, and interspersed with sparse industrial nuances and elements reminiscent of his Balkan heritage, Droulers’ music aims to craft a cinematic experience for the impassioned souls who revel in dance. “Problème De Normalité” epitomizes the essence of classical minimalist synth. Its compositions are understated, poised, and imbued with a frigid elegance reminiscent of early 4AD and Grauzone. The album, sung almost entirely in French, exudes a haunting ethereality, enveloping listeners in an atmospheric embrace. Its spooky, sparse arrangements and dreamy melodies conveys profound introspection, evoking sentiments of melancholy, isolation, and transcendental yearning.

The album commences with the evocative Des Bas Et Des Hauts (Lows and Highs), a chilling, resonant lamentation adorned with ethereal bell tones. Its poignant chorus lingers, reminiscent of a fading recollection. He’s Mean He’s Coming infuses a more danceable energy, blending rhythmic drum sequences, a haunting vocal with ghostly melodies, signaling an impending, inevitable approach. ILY perpetuates the eerie ambiance with its stripped-down synth, piercing guitar and floating vocals, evoking echoes of Lebanon Hanover’s distinctive sound.

With Few Last Words, listeners are immediately greeted by a heartfelt a cappella that echoes with emotion, interrupted brilliantly by lasers. Soon after, a compelling bassline introduces a contemplative Bauhaus-inspired poetic interlude. This style resonates again in Our Soirees Themes, where Bram’s subdued voice melds with profound synth pads and the resonance of metal. Lost In The Woods commences with a vivacious piano, followed by choral flourishes that segue into a captivating vocal piece, hinting at the allure of a mystical forest.

Petra revisits the time-honoured gothic tradition with looming synthesizers and foreboding guitar layers. Vegetation commences with subdued synth beats, soon giving way to strings reminiscent of Middle Eastern melodies, culminating in a piece evocative of Lebanon Hanover’s distinctive coldwave style. Folie resonates with an ethereal, static-laden quality, conjuring the image of an EVP recording capturing otherworldly voices within the cavernous halls of a haunted mansion. As the album draws to a close, listeners are treated to an organ-infused 80s style dance track, reminiscent of the early days of Depeche Mode, a zestful composition aptly titled Television.

“Inward to Gethsemane” wurde von Greg Wilkinson in den Earhammer Studios aufgenommen und gemixt und von Brad Boatright gemastert. Erscheinen wird das Album am 10. November 2023 via 20 Buck Spin. (VASTUM sind m Übrigen die am längsten beim Label engagierte Band.)

Jetzt haben die Organisatoren mit BATTLECREEK eine weitere Band des Line-ups enthüllt. Zuvor wurde mit TSJUDER einer der Headliner der kommenden Ausgabe bestätigt. Außerdem sind DISTASTE, NITROGODS, SCHIZOPHRENIA, CROM, SHIRENC PLAYS PUNGENT STENCH, THE SPIRIT, INFEST, NERVECELL, PORNTHEGORE und LAVE mit dabei – die Rosenheimer haben zuvor das BAVARIAN METAL BATTLE gewonnen.

Als ersten Act (und ersten Headliner) wurden Ende August 2023 TANKARD bestätigt – TANKARD spielten übrigens auch auf dem allerersten BAVARIAN BATTLE WINTER im Jahr 2005.

Die konstante Gezeitenbewegung der musikalischen Ebbe und Flut übersetzt sich in spacige Gitarren, tropfende Basslinien und flüssige Drum-Fills, gekrönt von hallenden Clean-Gesängen. Der Albumtitel leitet sich vom griechischen Wort ἀιών (aiṓn) ab, das übersetzt "Ewigkeit" bedeutet und im englischen Wort "aeon" für "Zeitalter" steht. BEES MADE HONEY IN THE VEIN TREE werden 2014 in Stuttgart gegründet. Da sich alle vier Mitglieder seit ihrer Kindheit kennen und einen akademischen Hintergrund haben, definiert die Band von Anfang an klare Ziele: An erster Stelle steht die Klangvision, krachende Doom-Metal-Riffs mit den sphärischen Klängen von Post- und Psychedelic-Rock zu kontrastieren. BEES MADE HONEY legen ihr musikalisches Konzept bereits mit dem Debütalbum "Medicine" im Jahr 2017 fest, das die solide Grundlage für ihren sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Sound bildet. Das zweite Album "Grandmother" (2019) erweitert den Soundhorizont durch tiefer gestimmte Gitarren, verdichtete Effekte, schnellere Passagen und einen härteren Gesangsstil. Die Schwaben treten außerdem im In- und Ausland vor einem stetig wachsenden Publikum auf, was zur Aufnahme und Veröffentlichung von "Harvestmen (live)" im Jahr 2022 führt. Die Alternative Metal / Country-Band THE NATIVE HOWL hat eine neue Single geteilt: “Can’t Sleep” steht u.a. via YouTube auf Abruf bereit.

Die Band lässt wissen:

“Wir wollten uns mit diesem Song musikalisch und kompositorisch selbst pushen. Während ‘Can’t Sleep’ ausgelassen und eingängig sein sollte, wurde der Text als letzter Ausruf von jemandem geschrieben, der sich in einem Stadium frustrierter Verzweiflung befindet, nachdem er verloren hat, wen oder was er am meisten liebt. Wir haben versucht, die Verzweiflung des Textes in den rasanten Riffs und den abrupten manischen Wechseln in der Musik des Songs widerzuspiegeln.”

VEMOD sind alles andere als eine Durchschnittsband. Die Norweger existieren vielmehr in musikalischen und lyrischen Grenzbereichen. Das zweite Album des Trios, "The Deepening", ist aus demselben tonalen Granit gemeißelt, aus dem schon der Vorgänger "Venter på stormene" vor über einem Jahrzehnt geschlagen wurde. Das klangliche Grundgestein lagert im Ort Namsos, wo VEMOD um die Jahrhundertwende vom damals 12-jährigen Jan Even Åsli als lebenslanges Projekt aus musikalischer Leidenschaft ins Leben gerufen wurden. Die nächstgelegene Großstadt ist Trondheim, wo die eigenwillige lokale Nidrosian Black Metal Szene, die sich auf den ursprünglichen Namen der Stadt bezieht, die ersten musikalischen Bezugspunkte für VEMOD lieferte – wie das erste Demo "Kringom fjell og skog" (2004) eindeutig belegt.

Als die Norweger sieben Jahre später mit dem Track "Moestæ Qverelæ" auf einer Split-Single sowie dem Demo "Vinterilden" im Jahr 2011 erneut auftauchten, hatten sie sich signifikant verändert. Das Trio hatte Elemente verstärkt, die schon zuvor vorhanden waren: Eine Prise Erhabenheit, die an frühe IN THE WOODS... erinnert, ein Schuss Melancholie und eine Messerspitze introvertierter Kontemplation inmitten einer breiten Palette emotionaler und dunkelfarbiger Klangbilder. VEMODs musikalischer Wandel findet Parallelen in der Entwicklung der französischen Brüder im Geiste, ALCEST, obwohl es in beide Richtungen keinen direkten Einfluss gab. Im Nachhinein können die Norweger als Vorreiter für aktuell so populäre Stile wie Blackgaze und Post-Black Metal gelten, obwohl sie sich beides nie auf ihre Fahne geschrieben haben. Mit ihrem Debütalbum "Venter på stormene" öffneten VEMOD im Jahr 2012 ihre Musik für neue Orte: Auf einen denkwürdigen Auftritt beim renommierten Beyond the Gates Festival in Bergen im Jahr 2013 folgte die legendäre Show im Vigeland Mausoleum beim Osloer Inferno Festival, die ein Jahr später VEMODs exzellenten Ruf sogar jenseits des Atlantiks zementierte.

"The Deepening" kommt nun mit einer veränderten Produktion daher, die ein neues Klangbild erzeugt, ohne sich von den Wurzeln der Band zu lösen. Auch stilistisch beschreiten die Norweger neue Wege, indem sie ihrem Sound weitere Elemente hinzufügen. Die lyrischen Themen, die sich durch "The Deepening" ziehen, erzählen von Veränderung, Vergänglichkeit, Transformation und Wachstum. "The Deepening" will die Möglichkeit bieten, lang gehegte Überzeugungen und tröstliche Illusionen zu überwinden. Wahrheit kann schmerzen. Und eine Wahrheit ist, dass an der Wegkreuzung, die VEMODs zweites Album erreicht hat, ein vertieftes Verständnis ihrer musikalischen Welt wartet.

Ernie Fleetenkieker ist Jahrgang 1980 und nur selten ohne Brille, Hut und Schnurrbart anzutreffen. Als "Fleet" wird im Niederdeutschen ein kleiner Wasserlauf in der Marsch bezeichnet und in Hafenstädten sind damit auch Kanäle gemeint. Ein "Kieker" ist wiederum jemand, der auf etwas sieht. In Hamburg werden Lumpensammler als "Fleetenkieker" bezeichnet. Auf Kanäle zu starren, passt natürlich hervorragend zu einem YouTuber, der mit Krachmucker TV seinen eigenen Kanal ins Leben gerufen hat.

Der Auslöser für diese ebenso spontane wie sehr erfolgreiche Aktion ist eine generelle Unlust des jungen Musikers, sich weiterhin mit den Tücken des Bandlebens und dem Business herumzuplagen. Auch ohne ehrgeizigen Plan klicken Woche für Woche immer mehr Menschen bei Krachmucker TV auf den Abo-Knopf. Das spricht sich rum und bald steht Ernie doch wieder mit einem Mikrofon auf der Bühne und zwar bei großen Festivals wie dem Wacken Open Air, Rock Hard Festival und dem Full Force.

Im Frühjahr 2020 folgt dann der Versuch, endlich "den großen Roman des 21. Jahrhunderts" zu schreiben. Dieser endet ungefähr auf Seite 20. Ein Spaziergang mit den Hunden bringt den zündenden Gedanken: Das ultimative Buch über den Heavy Metal soll es werden. Doch diese Idee ist ebenfalls nach zwanzig Seiten ausgeschöpft. Doch wen die harte Musik so richtig gepackt hat, den lässt das Thema nicht mehr ruhen. Anekdoten, Episoden, gute Zeiten, harte Zeiten, viele von den Dramen, Lachnummern, Höhepunkten und Tiefschlägen, die Ernie Fleetenkieker in seinen 30 Jahren als sogenannter Headbanger erlebt hat, formen sich schrittweise zu seinem Metal-Manifest, das so zerrissen, widersprüchlich und leidenschaftlich ist, wie der Autor selbst.

"Ernie Fleetenkiekers Metal-Manifest" ist ein ganz und gar persönlicher, sicherlich mitunter auch kontroverser Blick auf die Kultur und Szene des Heavy Metal. So manch ein Leser wird sich selbst in diesem Buch wiedererkennen. Einige werden heftig widersprechen. Andere erhalten Einblicke in eine für sie unbekannte Welt. Doch jedem, der in dem Metal-Manifest schmökert, wird Unterhaltung vom Feinsten geboten.

Auch den Clip “False Divinity” kann man sich bei YouTube ansehen. “False Divinity” ist das erste Material seit dem Studioalbum “Bloodwork” (2014). Ob auf die Singles auch ein neues Album folgen wird, hat die Formation um Shouter J. T. Cavey (ERRA) noch nicht verraten.

Wenn wir an die Jahre 2020 bis 2022 zurückdenken, sind wir uns eigentlich alle einig: Gebraucht hätten wir diese Erfahrungen nicht. Die Pandemie brachte bekanntlich auch für die Musikindustrie neue und große Herausforderungen mit sich – und den Fans eine Reihe experimenteller Formate: Video-Streaming und On-Demand-Konzerte waren plötzlich der einzige Weg, Live-Musik zu genießen. Aus jenen Tagen stammt auch „Queen of Time (Live At Tavastia 2021)“, das nun als Live-Album einen zweiten Frühling erhalten soll.

Dass das komplette Konzept aber heute völlig aus der Zeit gefallen wirkt, trübt die Freude doch ein wenig. Nicht dass die hier dargebotene Live-Perfomance schlecht wäre, im Gegenteil: AMORPHIS zeigen sich gut eingespielt, der Sound ist differenziert wie kraftvoll gemischt und lässt dank einiger Backing Tracks auch nichts vom Bombast der Studioversion vermissen.

“Queen of Time (Live At Tavastia 2021)” ist ein modernes Relikt
In Abwesenheit einer Live-Zuschauerschaft ist aber genau dieser Umstand zugleich das Todesurteil für „Queen Of Time (Live At Tavastia 2021)“. Denn wie der Titel schon verrät, ist die Veröffentlichung genau das: eine isolierte Konzert-Aufnahme des Studioalbums, welche ohne die Dynamik eines richtigen Publikums der Vorlage schlicht nichts hinzuaddieren kann. Die Setlist wiederum bietet selbst nur das Mindestmaß: „Queen of Time“ (2018) wird ohne seine beiden Bonus-Tracks dargeboten, weitere Dreingaben oder Songs suchen wir vergebens.

Im Prinzip ist „Live At Tavastia“ ein modernes Relikt: ein Live-Dokument, das uns an das erinnert, was wir nicht mehr zurückhaben wollen. Trotz des manchmal wackligen Hintergrundgesangs von Bassist Olli-Pekka Laine verbleiben wir somit mit einem schnörkellos dargebotenen Set, dessen einziger Gast ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN vom Band kommt.

Gegenüber der Studiofassung fehlen “Live At Tavastia 2021” die Argumente
Was früher gerne als Kaufanreiz einer neuen Studioveröffentlichung beigelegt wurde, vermarkten AMORPHIS nun zum regulären Preis – das kann man natürlich aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht so machen, raubt der Platte aber in Gegenwart der für deutlich weniger Geld erhältlichen Studiofassung seine wichtigste Existenzberechtigung. Schlussendlich halten wir es mit „Queen Of Time (Live At Tavastia 2021)“ somit wie mit den Erfahrungen während der damaligen Krise: Eigentlich hätten wir gut darauf verzichten können.

Die Progressive Rock-Band RAISED BY HAZE hat mit dem Lyric-Video “Freedom” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Touch The Sky” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album des italienischen Quartetts, welches aus Sängerin Valentina Tesio, Gitarrist Gabriele Robotti, Bassist Leonardo Barbierato und Drummer Marco Ferraris besteht.

Im September teilte man bereits einen Video-Clip zu “Prediction“.

“Touch The Sky”, das von Federico Pennazzato in den Truck Me Hard Studios aufgenommen und von Aldo Lonobile ebenda gemixt und gemastert wurde, wird am 17. November 2023 via Rockshots Records erscheinen.

Die Comedy / Parody Metal-Band NANOWAR OF STEEL stellt ihr neues Album “Dislike To False Metal” mit einem weiteren Clip vor: “Protocols Of Love” bei YouTube.

Davor gab es die fünfte Single in Form eines Lyric-Videos zu “Metal Boomer Battalion” bei YouTube. Das Stück folgte auf “Sober” bei YouTube.

Im März teilte die Gruppe den dritten Vorab-Song: “Passadena 1994” handelt vom verlorenen WM-Finale 2014 der italienischen Fußball-Nationalmannschaft und hat mit Joakim Brodén (SABATON) einen prominenten Gastsänger mit an Bord.

Der vorherige Preview-Song “Disco Metal” steht ebenso als Clip via YouTube auf Abruf bereit. Auch den ersten Preview-Track “Winterstorm In The Night” gibt es als Musikvideo bei YouTube und enthält einen Gastauftritt von ELEINE-Sängerin Madeleine Liljestam.

Die Formation kommentiert ihre neue Platte wie folgt:

“‘Dislike to False Metal’ ist unsere digitale Empörungserklärung an alles, was nicht so metallisch ist, wie wir es gerne hätten.

Wir werden alt und werden langsam zu Metal-Boomern, die durch das Netz rauschen und alles, was False Metal ist, disliken, unfollowen und abbestellen.

Obwohl das Album selbst voll von Nicht-Metal-Einflüssen ist – wie Swing und Backstreet Boys – ist das Rückgrat unserer Musik immer noch aus reinem Edelstahl gemacht!”

Die Atmospheric Black Metal-Band SOLBRUD hat für 2. Februar 2024 ihr neues Studioalbum “IIII” angekündigt. Auf dem vierten Werk verfolgten die Dänen erstmals einen anderen Songwriting-Ansatz: Jedes der vier Bandmitglieder komponierte individuell das Material für jeweils eine Vinyl-Seite des Doppel-Albums. Darauf zu hören sind auch die Songs von Gitarrist und Sänger Ole Luk (AFSKY), welcher die Band im Herbst 2021 verließ, um sich auf sein Soloprojekt zu konzentrieren – seinen Beitrag stellte er zuvor jedoch noch fertig.

Als Vorgeschmack gibt es schon jetzt die Single “Tåge” bei YouTube.

“IIII” wurde von Markus F. Larsen produziert und erscheint via Vendetta Records. Das Mastering übernahm Flemming Rasmussen.

Out now via Bandcamp as a free download is DJ Shane Aungst’s “Electronic Bodies – Nightside Sessions” mega-mix. The Seattle (United States) based DJ produced this 2-part megamix including 23 tracks (and 2 intros) from “Electronic Bodies” during long evening sessions in October 2023. Note that the intros were created by Viscera Drip.

As you will know the original “Electronic Bodies” compilation (available here on Bandcamp) focused on EBM and its offspring. The proceedings of this mega-mix will equally go to charity.

Shane’s mixes mainly deal in the EBM/Aggrotech/Industrial genres, and come with heavy layers of sampling and edits. He has been doing studio work, working on sampling, mixes, edits, remixes, as well as putting together some original material. We will soon also publish an interview with Shane on his current and future work. Check his Instagram page for more info.

Costa Rica’s goth / darkwave outfit Ariel Maniki and the Black Halos today announce vinyl LP pre-orders for their new live album: “Communion”. The live album will be released through Tumbas Eternas Records. The release comes ten years after their formation.

The vinyl LP comes in a limited edition of 300 copies: 150 copies are on black vinyl, and 150 on translucid blue vinyl. All are packaged in a gatefold sleeve, featuring a photo album from the concert, inner sleeve with lyrics, and a poster included.

COMMUNION (Live Nico Baker Theater 2023) by Ariel Maniki And The Black Halos

Bandleader Ariel Maniki explains: “We’ve known for some time that we were unable to do a vinyl release with our previous label. On the side, however, we’ve been good friends with Peruvian label Tumbas Eternas for many years, and they have always manifested their intention to do a vinyl record with us, if the project is the right one. They originated the idea of doing a “best of” album, and we introduced the “live” aspect to it. The idea of the “live” format is just much more appealing to me than a regular “singles” collection. We all agreed this release had to be something that’s truly special and worthy of people’s vinyl collection.”

Communion was recorded live on 15 July 2023, at El Nico Baker, a small theatre in the trio’s hometown of San José.

Ariel adds: “The show took place just 5 minutes away from where we live near downtown San José. We booked this little theatre with capacity for 100 people: way over the expected attendance for local underground acts here in Costa Rica. We thought 40 to 50 people coming to see us would be just good enough to build up the right energy exchange between the audience and the band, and pull out a good live recording. When we climbed the stairs from backstage, we found the theatre cheering at us at full capacity. For us, it was a very emotional and magical evening. We are just so happy that we preserved it on this recording.”

The Communion LP can be preordered now from Tumbas Eternas Records via Bandcamp. Note that this is a physical vinyl release only. The band and their label have no intention of selling digital presales right now, but are obliged to provide this option for Bandcamp, so they added the digital download at a intentionally prohibitive price.

Die Entscheidung, nach 27 Jahren Bandgeschichte das nunmehr achte Studioalbum in Eigenregie zu vertreiben, fasst Sharon den Adel prägnant zusammen: “Labels neigen dazu, traditionell zu sein, aber dies sind keine traditionellen Zeiten […]“. Und damit umschreibt die Sängerin gleichzeitig den Kern WITHIN TEMPTATIONs, die sich eben selbst nicht nur auf das Bewährte stützen wollen, sondern neue Einflüsse an jeder Ecke wissbegierig mitaufnehmen.

Das prägt die musikalische Entwicklung der Niederländer natürlich in entscheidendem Maße: Vom ursprünglichen Symphonic Metal sind auf „Bleed Out“ nach den experimentellen Vorgängern bestenfalls noch entfernte Spuren auszumachen. Mit seinen modernen Synthesizern, den zielstrebigen Strukturen und den poppig-eingängigen Melodien steht das Sextett vielmehr mit beiden Beinen im zeitgemäßen Alternative Metal. Streicher und orchestrale Anleihen fahren WITHIN TEMPTATION einzig in „Worth Dying For“ in größerem Umfang auf, wohingegen es ansonsten der gegenwärtige Zeitgeist ist, welcher den Ton angibt.

WITHIN TEMPTATION zeigen sich inhaltlich überraschend politisch
So lassen die tief gestimmten Gitarren in „Bleed Out“ eine Prise Djent einfließen, während das beschwingte „Ritual“ seinen Pop-Appeal durch ohnehin wieder angesagtes 80er-Flair aufpoliert. Diese dominanten Stilmittel bilden auch das Rückgrat von Songs wie „Wireless“, die WITHIN TEMPTATION auch inhaltlich überraschend politisch und gesellschaftskritisch zeigen. Von Ukraine-Krieg über Frauenrechte bis hin zu den iranischen Protesten gegen den Kopftuchzwang im Titeltrack nutzt die Band ihren neu gefestigten Sound, um entschieden die Stimme zu erheben.

In dieser Hinsicht kommt den Songs auch das eingängige und dabei selbstbewusste Auftreten der Band zugute: WITHIN TEMPTATION lassen keinerlei Zweifel daran, in welche Richtung sie ihre Musik transportieren wollen. Diese Entschlossenheit spiegelt sich auch im variablen und souveränen Gesang wider, welcher sich auf „Bleed Out“ nicht selten im Zentrum der Songs wiederfindet. Dass Sharon den Adel diese Aufgabe spielend schultert, versteht sich von selbst, und doch kann sie zugleich auf Kollege Martijn Spierenburg zählen, dessen detailverliebte Synth-Arbeit im Hintergrund zusätzlich Tiefe schafft.

Obwohl die elf Tracks nur selten das Tempo in entscheidender Weise variieren, bleibt das Gesamtwerk dank Laut-Leise-Dynamik oder einer starken Kollaboration wie mit ANNISOKAY in „Shed My Skin“ kurzweilig. Dass allein der Schlusspunkt mit „Entertain You“ etwas platt wirkt, wollen wir nicht zu hoch hängen, da WITHIN TEMPTATION auch hier mit dem Gastgesang von Produzent Daniel Gibson neue Wege zu beschreiten suchen.

Es ist vielmehr Sinnbild einer stetig innovierenden Band, deren Weg nach vorne nicht in Stein gemeißelt ist. Ohne Scheuklappen und mit einem Faible für klare Gesangslinien öffnet sich „Bleed Out“ dabei auch diesmal wieder einem breiten Publikum, wohlwissend, dass man als etablierter Act damit auch ein gewisses Risiko eingeht. Die Alternative jedenfalls ist für WITHIN TEMPTATION offenbar keine Option, denn eine solche Strategie könnte man sich höchstens in traditionellen Zeiten erlauben.

Columbia Theater, Berlin, Germany 21st October 2023IAMX - “Fault Lines1 - Europe Tour” 2023 IAMX was founded more than 20 years ago, in 2002, by Chris Corner and has since then been an institution in the Dark music community with its singular style, which is influenced by Synth Pop, Industrial, and Electronic Body Music. But although IAMX is iconic in some parts of Goth subculture, its outstanding live performances and electronic sounds also attract people outside the dark spectrum, which was very visible at the concert in Berlin, where the audience was a mix of younger and middle-aged people, people belonging to the dark subculture, but also persons not being members of any subculture - at least not visibly.

Palladium, Cologne, Germany 23rd October 2023Röyksopp - “TrueElectric EU Tour 2023” - Support: Mickael Karkousse Norway’s premium electronic musician RÖYKSOPP were coming for an exclusive show to Germany on October 23rd in Cologne with album trilogy ‘Profound Mysteries I-III’. When I arrived at the Palladium, the queue was not so long and it took quite a while, until the venue filled. But at the end, I guess around 3,000 fans attended the show, some coming from far away. I never saw the band live before, only read several reviews and saw pictures, so I was very curious what to expect.

Mastermind Nico Steckelberg ist den meisten wohl am ehesten durch ELANE bekannt. Seit 2020 hat er das Projekt TWO WORDS IN JAPANESE, welches sich der düsteren Elektronikmusik widmet. Mit Bianca Stücker hat er nun für sein erstes Full Length-Werk eine kongeniale Partnerin gefunden. Bianca ist freie Autorin, Musikerin, Tätowiererin und Tänzerin, hat Musikwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte und Geschichte studiert, ein Kirchenmusikexamen abgelegt und 2012 ihre Promotion an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen abgeschlossen. Als Songschreiberin, Sängerin und Instrumentalistin hat sie zahlreiche CDs mit verschiedenen Bands und Projekten veröffentlicht (u.a mit Violet, The Violet Tribe, VaNi und dem Ensemble Violetta und Benecke).

Der von tragischen, fast beklemmenden, dennoch sphärischen Klängen intonierte Opener ist schleppend und lebt zu Beginn von den Sprachsamples, welche aus irgendeiner Vorlesung von Sigmund Freund zu stammen scheinen, womit wir auch mittendrin im textlichen Geschehen sind. Geht es doch hier hauptsächlich um psychische Erkrankungen. Vorweg: die Musik ist kein Antidepressivum. Die klangliche Eleganz dient eher unterstützend, wobei der Rückzug hier in ein Gefängnis mit wattierten Gittern erfolgt.

Wabernd und versehen mit einer galanten Elegie schleicht sich „Mind set“ heran. Zwischendrin Kraftwerk’sche Larmoyanz aus den 70ern. Der Song scheint sich zu ergeben, zu verlieren und lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf Bianca, welche eine Einführung in den Narzissmus liefert. Die Inszenierung zwischen sphärisch und LoFi ist genial.

In „Day in, Day out“ erinnert man an frühe Phillip Boa, als man die Musik noch schön schräg inszenierte. Auch hier gibt es den galanten Refrain, hinzu gesellt sich eine romantische Passage, welche Bianca zur eigenen Tragik nutzt. Das instrumentelle Intermezzo variiert zwischen getragenen Sequenzen und verstörenden Geräuschen, welche frappierend an ein Fliegenmeer erinnern. Emotional mit tränenden Auge wird der Chorus dargeboten, während passagenweise das Laboratorium von Ernst Horn in den ’85er Keller des Voodooclubs verfrachtet wird.

Eingepackt in eine traurig-schönen Melodielinie schleicht sich „Emotional“ fast samt-poppig heran. Der getragene Sound, der in Passagen gar ein wenig Bombast auflädt, weiß voll zu überzeugen. Bianca erinnert hier ein wenig an Anastacia. Zu Beginn von „Insommnia Central“, welches sehr kühl daherkommt, meint man sich kurz Radio-hörend in einer Kiste von Wilhelm Reich zu befinden, bevor uns eine Violine kurzzeitig den Blick aus dem Fenster gönnt. Gespenstisch und mit kleinen Verzierungen versehen kommt „The Truth“ daher. Biancas Stimme im Intermezzo der klassischen Instrumente wirkt bewusst zerbrechlich, dennoch aufbäumend. Das chansoneske „An Mignon“ ist im Original von Franz Schubert aus dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert mit einem (typisch) tragischen Text von Goethe.

Fazit: Über 9 Songs bekommt der Hörer schwere Kost geboten, welche sich sowohl textlich als auch musikalisch bleischwer auf die Seele zu legen vermag. Wunderschöne Stimmen konterkarieren sich mit kalten Klängen, die sich wie eine Gänsehaut um des Hörers Seele legen. Schön wie der Hase von Dürer, aber ebenso braucht es Zeit m jedem Strich, hier jedem Ton ein Faszinosum zu entdecken. Da Variation zwischen fesselnden Melodien, Gesängen und diese Vehemenz der Schräge machen das Zuhören zu einem spannenden Ereignis. (andreas)

In a cityscape drenched with tales as vast as Los Angeles, Romantic Thriller (Rebecca Huston) artfully weaves performance, narrative, and profoundly evocative songwriting bearing a distinctly cinematic touch. Romantic Thriller’s latest offering, “All I Want Is Sleep,” carries with it an enigmatic, contemplative, and elusive essence.

Drawing inspiration from the deep shadows of film noir, the resplendent glamour of Hollywood’s heyday, enigmatic forces, and myths of old, Romantic Thriller immerses listeners into a world reminiscent of shimmering lanterns in the French Quarter, fall-time carnival grounds of the Midwest, the threshold spaces of timeworn estates adorned with intricate wallpapers, and the patina of ancient locks and keys. This transposition to the screen amplifies her scope, providing a grander stage upon which she unfurls her musical tales in a manner both cinematic and surrealist in nature. The film captures her ambitious theatricality, all set against the backdrop of an almost ethereal, dreamlike milieu. Much like a seasoned director crafts a film, Romantic Thriller deftly melds striking imagery with the narrative woven into the melody of All I Want Is Sleep, each element serving to enhance and illuminate the other.

Die Blackened Death Metal-Band MASTER’S CALL hat im Sommer 2023 einen Vertrag mit Fireflash Records abgeschlossen. Gemeinsam veröffentlichte man am 24. November 2023 das Debütalbum “A Journey For The Damned” auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Nun hat die Band auch zum Track “Damnation’s Black Winds” ein Musikvideo bei YouTube nachgereicht.

Vorab teilte die Gruppe außerdem den Song “Blood On The Altar” im Netz. Seit September gibt es die erste Single “The Serpent’s Rise” als Musikvideo bei YouTube. Die Formation erläutert:

“‘The Serpent’s Rise'” beschreibt eine Beschwörung dunkler Macht in Form einer Schlange, die einen chaotischen, erstickenden Einfluss auf die Welt ausübt. Der Vibe dieses Tracks passt ziemlich gut zu unserem Mantra, denn wir haben Black-Metal-Melodien, thrashige Blackened-Death-Riffs, einige von der klassischen Metal-Ära inspirierte Versatzstücke und einen großen Heavy-Refrain.”

Die Aufnahmen zum Nachfolger der EP “Morbid Black Trinity” (2019) gestalteten sich turbulent, wie Sänger John Wilcox erklärt, der zuvor die Gitarre bediente: Insgesamt habe man in dieser Zeit drei Sänger verloren, bis sich Wilcox selbst ans Mikro stellte.

Melbourne synth-driven post-punks <a href="https://www.instagram.com/screensavermusic/">screensaver</a> have released their second full-length, Decent Shapes, out now via Poison City/Upset The Rhythm (UK). Decent Shapes follows on from the band’s critically acclaimed 2021 debut, Expressions of Interest.

In their latest release, screensaver delves into the essence of living amidst an ever-expanding mountain of material desires, constantly seeking the novel, the pristine, and the glossy. In a realm dominated by materialistic pursuits and superficial corporate interactions, behind-the-scenes machinations reveal a starkly contrasting world that yearns for absolute control and dominance as the means to financial success.

“The themes for Decent Shapes could read a bit like a shopping list of all the things that are wrong with the world: corporations, climate change, energy vampires, materialism, mental health, the housing crisis,” says vocalist Krystal Maynard. “Sonically, it’s a high energy record and one that we hope will make people think – but also get up and want to dance.”

The music reflects modern life’s simmering tensions and escalating frustrations, with detachment and dissociation serving as necessary shields against this onslaught. The group’s music is defined by a palpable sense of urgency, a dedication to encapsulating the essence of post-punk, and a willingness to embrace new wave and electronic experimentation. We hear a myriad of influences on their sound, including Bush Tetras, Gang of Four, Lene Lovich, Suburban Lawns, Sparks, Devo, Giorgio Moroder, and PiL.

The album opens with Red Lines. “Red Lines is built on a groove-laden bassline replete with spidery guitar lines, and a New Wave key line that stitch together to create a song rich with dynamic,” says Maynard.

Next we encounter The Guilt, a track that harkens back to the sharp New Wave bass undertones reminiscent of the B-52s, complemented by a vocal style evoking the essence of Martha and The Muffins and Devo alike. The song crescendos with an invigorating chorus and an exhilarating rhythm that pulses at its core and a funky breakdown with shooty space-laser synths.

“Life is competition, life is bargaining and negotiating to get what you want and working out who will give it to you,” Maynard says about Party Interest. “It’s keeping your cards close to your chest to make sure only you know your real motives and no one else knows the game you’re playing. It’s a dark and danceable synth-driven song and my personal favourite on the record.”

Drainer embarks upon a realm rich in textured synth harmonies, exuding a palpable sense of foreboding and immediacy. The vocal cadence distinctly recalls the timbre of Lene Lovich, all set against a backdrop that is both frenetic and irresistibly rhythmic, urging one to move to its beat. Echoes of a Lovich-inspired vocal intonation gracefully transition into Severance Pay, a piece punctuated by its vivacious percussion and undercurrents of darkly tinged guitar strums. “It wouldn’t be a screensaver album without a song purely dedicated to anxiety, riffing between the physical sensations and the cognitive behavioural patterns of the condition,” Maynard says.

Following suit is Direct Debit, a track infused with the sun-kissed resonance of surf guitars and an upbeat tempo. Drenched in the vibrant hues of New Wave, it boasts an irresistibly catchy chorus that practically beckons one to belt out its verses during a spirited car ride. Segueing seamlessly, we encounter Cancellation Notice, which commences with a deliberate, methodical synth line before erupting into a formidable surge of guitar. The track’s cadence conjures the intricate rhythms of prog rock while intertwining with choral configurations reminiscent of a classic Devo composition.

In the standout track No Vacation, there’s a stark dominance of minimalist synths that conjure an unsettling ambiance. The track transitions to a spoken word soliloquy, a fervent discourse on the relentless inundation our minds face in today’s relentless societal tempo. It’s a chilling musical commentary on the all-too-familiar spectre of burnout…something that makes us all run screaming in terror.

Concluding this musical journey is Signals, ushering in a more expansive sonic palette. Its commencement is marked by synths that cry out, reminiscent of distant sirens, only to transition into the compelling resonance akin to the scores of 1980s police dramas. Serving as a fitting anthem for contemporary dystopian times, it’s a track to be amplified, particularly when the realities conveyed in news broadcasts become overwhelming.

Recorded by Julian Cue (CIVIC, Gut Health, Bitumen) Decent Shapes is a 10-track sonic excursion through an atmospheric soundstage, humming and mutating as a palette of angular guitars, dark synth and electronic experimentation distills into a moody, textural potion.

After spending three years in an incubatory state, screensaver began as a trans-Pacific collaboration between Christopher Stephenson (Spray Paint/Exek) and Krystal Maynard (Bad Vision/ex Polo) in 2016.

By 2019 Christopher had relocated to Melbourne and the pair recruited Giles Fielke (ex LowTide) and James Beck (Personal Touch/ex Rat Columns) on bass and drums. The band began playing locally in late 2019 and made a short run in the US opening shows for Wiccans and Timmy’s Organism. Despite the restrictions in Melbourne due to Covid-19, in 2020 the band produced their debut single “Strange Anxiety”. This was followed up with “Living In An Instant”, an agitated post-punk track that featured on Blow Blood Records’ ALTA 2 (A Long Time Alone) compilation.
