NEW MODEL ARMY veröffentlichen am 26. Januar 2024 ihr neues Album “Unbroken”, ab März sind die Briten auf Tour.

Reinhören kann man seit heute in die erste Single, zu “The First Summer After” gibt’s auch ein Video bei YouTube.

„Wir haben Mitte 2021 in unserem eigenen Studio angefangen, erste Ideen zu schreiben und aufzunehmen. Schon früh wussten wir, dass unsere erste Wahl für den Mix der legendäre Tchad Blake sein würde. Das Album klingt nach uns, aber doch anders, und es wurde grandios abgemischt – kraftvoll, dynamisch und musikalisch“, sagt die Band.

Der Ticketverkauf für die Tour beginnt am 3. November 2023, am selben Tag erscheint auch die erste Single aus “Unbroken”.

W.E.B. stellen ihre neue EP “Into Hell Fire We Burn” nach der Videosingle “Necrology of Hel” nun auch mit einem Video-Clip zum Titeltrack vor.

Die EP erschien am  “Into Hell Fire We Burn” am 26. Oktober 2023, vor dem gewöhnungbedürftigen Artwork braucht aber niemand Angst zu haben: “Into Hell Fire We Burn” gibt es nur digital, das Cover muss man in der Sammlung also nicht verstecken.

Die Band nutzt das EP-Format, um einige ungewöhnliche Songs zu veröffentlichen:

“Die Idee zu dieser EP geisterte schon lange in unseren Köpfen herum. W.E.B. haben 2012 die EP  ‘My Storm Upon You’ veröffentlicht. Die Freiheit, experimentelles Material, das nie Teil eines offiziellen Albums wird, etwas Neues und überarbeitete Songs zu veröffentlichten, ist faszinierend. Hier haben wir einen neuen Song ‘Into Hell Fire We Burn’, eine Neuaufnahme von ‘Necrology’ (von Colosseum 2021), gesungen von Hel Pyre, ein neu aufgenommenes Medley zweier älterer Songs ‘For Bidens’ und ‘My Storm Upon You’, einen Industrial-Remix von ‘Nightmares in Disguise’ und ‘Regina Est’, eine orchestrale Version der ‘Clamor Luna’-Trilogie und eine Coverversion von ROTTING CHRISTs ‘Non Serviam’. Diese  EP gleicht einer Achterbahnfahrt mit sehr seltsamen Kurven, aber genau das macht Achterbahnen doch so interessant, oder? Wir laden euch ein zu einer Fahrt durch die Unterwelt, vom Höllenfeuer bis zum siegreichen Schrei von ‘Non Serviam’.

Es gab ja Zeiten, da hätte man als Metalhead niemals zugegeben, dass man heimlich auch gepflegte Popmusik hört. 1982 gehörte dazu sicher auch bei vielen die SIMPLE MINDS. Die Schotten um die verbliebenen Gründungsmitglieder Jim Kerr als Sänger und Gitarrist Charlie Burchill feiern nun ihr fünftes Studioalbum „New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)“, auf dem die Band aus Glasgow die New Wave-Linie gegen eine Pop-Rockigere Richtung drehten, bevor man bald darauf immer poppiger wurde. Das 40er-Jubiläum hat man knapp verpasst, weil man andere Pläne hatte als den üblichen Re-Release mit irgendwelchen Goodies. Zumal es erst 2016 eine entsprechende neu remasterte Neuauflage gab. So entschied man sich, das Album nochmals unter Livebedingungen neu zu spielen und wählte für ein edles Ambiente das Paisley Abbey, ein Kloster in der Nähe von Glasgow.

Die Damen und Herren von den aktuellen SIMPLE MINDS brauchen nur wenige Momente, um einen mit dem entspannt gespielten „Someone Somewhere In Summertime“ zum verträumten Mitswingen zu bewegen oder bald darauf mit dem zappeligeren „Promised You A Miracle“. Denkt man bei den Originalsongs noch an typische 80er Outfits und Styles, so klingt hier eine Portion Reife durch. Beweisen müssen sie niemandem mehr was, entsprechend cool spielen sie ihre Songs, die auch heute noch einen angenehm dunklen Touch haben im Vergleich zu späteren Riesenhits wie „Don´t You (Forget About Me)“. Die Stimme von Jim Kerr klingt merklich gereift, das steht den Songs gut. Das interessante, aber nie aufdringliche Gitarrenspiel von Charlie Burchill gefällt ebenso. Die Synthie-Sounds treten nur mal dezent nach vorn.

SIMPLE MINDS spielen „New Gold Dream“ cool, groovy und mit hörbarem Spaß
So groovt man entspannt weiter, auch dank den coolen Bassläufen. „Big Sleep“ trägt einen davon, man tänzelt mit zum Titeltrack oder „Glittering Prize“. Die Musik auf „New Gold Dream – Live From Paisley Abbey“ lädt ein zum Zuhören, sie kommt in dieser Form erfreulich zeitlos und frei vom 80er Glitter- und Staub. Auch der aufgeräumte Sound passt zu den Songs, jeder ist super zu hören und obwohl es kein Publikum und dessen Reaktionen gibt spürt man die Energie einer Liveshow. Alles kommt aus einem Moment der Gemeinsamkeit, alle sind konzentriert, aber haben hörbar Spaß. Den hat man gerade auf den Videos auch immer wieder mit Cherisse Osei, was für eine bezaubernde Schlagzeugerin, die mit sichtbarem Spaß spielt. Den haben auch die Herren auf der Bühne, aber eben etwas zurückhaltender, man ist ja schließlich Schotte.

Diese Neuversion von „New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)“ ist wirklich gelungen
Mit „New Gold Dream – Live From Paisley Abbey“ ehren die SIMPLE MINDS das Album definitiv. Wer das Album mochte, der wird es in dieser Form ebenfalls lieben. Wem das Original zu sehr 80s oder Pop war, der sollte in diese Live-Version rein hören. Wer noch mehr live sehen möchte kann dies auf der Tour: am 10. April in der Barclays-Arena in Hamburg, in Berlin (11. April), Frankfurt (12. April) und München (13. April). Special Guests sind die schottischen Rocker DEL AMITRI.

WITHERFALL präsentieren mit einem Video zu “Insidious” einen neuen Song. Es ist das erste neue Material der Band seit ihrem Album “Curse Of Autumn” aus dem Jahr 2021.

WITHERFALL erklären, was es mit dem Track auf sich hat:

“Nach einer verrückten Zeit, in der wir Songs schrieben und aufnahmen und die uns quer durch die USA  in fünf verschiedene Staaten führte, präsentieren wir euch die vielleicht aufwändigste WITHERFALL-Produktion aller Zeiten: ‘Insidious’  ist die erste Single aus unserem vierten Album. Der Song entstand um vier Uhr morgens unter einem nebligen Vollmond, das zentrale Thema wurde in einem einzigen Take improvisiert. Der Kontrast zwischen Konsonanz und Dissonanz führt den Hörer in den Wahnsinn. Der Song wurde komplett mit analogen Instrumenten aufgenommen und von Zeuss produziert. Das Video von Bradley Cooper und Cig Neutron repräsentiert das allgegenwärtige Unbehagen und das Gefühl der Spaltung in unserer heutigen Kultur. Wir wünschten, wir könnten sagen, dass bei der Produktion dieses Videos keine Puppen zu Schaden gekommen sind…”

Zwei alte Freunde wollen die Totenwelt erforschen. Der eine hat den Metal schon länger hinter sich gelassen, der andere ist mit seinem Label mehr als gut ausgelastet. Die beiden scharen Weggefährten um sich und brechen mutig auf in Richtung „Xibalba“. Die Entstehungsgeschichte von ERSHETU könnte fast ein Abenteuerfilm sein. Komponist Sacr und Lyriker Void schaffen es, mit üppigen und teils exotischen Sounds, den finsteren, undurchdringlichen südamerikanischen Dschungel spürbar werden zu lassen.

Eine üppige Klanglandschaft: ERSHETU haben eine Vielzahl an Instrumenten und Schichten im Einsatz, um „Xibalba“ authentisch erlebbar werden zu lassen.
„Xibalba“ wirkt zunächst ein wenig überfordernd, die ausufernde musikalische Landschaft erschlägt die Hörenden geradezu. Doch der Weg durch den Klangkosmos ist klar: Symphonischer Black Metal ist das grobe Grundgerüst von ERSHETU, inspiriert von alten Meistern wie LIMBONIC ART und ARCTURUS. „Xibalba“ nutzt dies am ehsten als Stilmittel und nicht unmittelbar als Quelle. Denn ERSHETU denken groß und belassen es nicht beim Metal. „Xibalba“ lässt sich Zeit. Das stimmungsvolle Intro „Enter The Places Of The Mask“ kommt noch ohne Metal-Elemente aus, dafür sind da Synthesizer und recht authentisch klingende, südamerikanische Elemente: Tribal Drums, rhythmische Gesänge und Flöten.

Letzteres zieht sich durch das Album hindurch und ist das einzige Instrument, das fast schon zu offensiv eingesetzt wird – es wird glücklicherweise so gut im Gesamtsound untergebracht, dass es nicht stört. Im Gegenteil: Dadurch erhält die Musik eine besondere Atmosphäre und Authentizität. Auch die Synthesizer, die sehr von Soundtracks inspiriert sind, lassen die Musik mal groß werden, dann strahlt sie durch die Streicher wieder eine Terroratmosphäre à la Bernhard Herrman aus.

ERSHETU schicken die Hörer:innen ins Totenreich der Maya: „Xibalba“ ein abenteuerlicher, musikalischer Trip.
Die Gitarren lassen ERSHETU über weite Strecken eher im Hintergrund, das Hauptaugenmerk der Musik liegt auf den Synthesizern und dem Gesang. BORKNAGAR– und SOLEFALD-Musiker Lars Nedland leiht ERSHETU seine charismatische Stimme und trägt viel zur Melodik von „Xibalba“ bei. Seine Performance ist sehr komplex, mal führt er die Stücke an, dann spielt er mit den Harmonien der Synthesizer, Gitarren und Flöten. Das geht häufig nicht leicht ins Ohr, hat aber umso mehr Details und Facetten. Insgesamt stellen alle Musiker ihr Können in den Dienst von Sacrs Kompositionen, selbst Gastmusiker und BLUT AUS NORD-Mastermind Vindsval.

Und diese Kompositionen haben es in sich. Episch und chaotisch, dynamisch und ausufernd ist ERSHETUs erstes Album geworden. „From Corn To Dust“ startet noch getragen und baut Schicht um Schicht langsam auf, während sich „The Place Of Fright“ in Richtung Horror schraubt, „Hollow Earth“ eine sehr spirituelle Ebene hat und „Tunkuluchú“ einen weit ausholenden Schlusspunkt setzt. „Xibalba“ ist bei allem Pomp auch ein dynamisches Album. ERSHETU verstehen es, die Instrumentierung zurückzufahren oder so geschickte Twists einzubauen, dass die Soundwand nicht zu anstrengend wird. Dennoch: Leichte Kost ist dieses Debütalbum nicht und verlangt Hingabe und genaues Hinhören. Das spannende Konzept, die mutigen Kompositionen und die starke Performance gehen Hand in Hand und sorgen für ein vollmundiges Erlebnis. Da darf man schon jetzt gespannt sein, welche Totenwelt ERSHETU als Nächstes bereisen werden.

Zu hören ist hier auch NASTY-Shouter Matthi. Entnommen sind alle Tracks der neuen EP “Right To Disappear”, die am 27. Oktober 2023 via Easthaven Records erschienen ist.

“Unlightenment” wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Kjell Åge Meland (u.a. für PANTHEON I tätig) ausgestattet und wird am 24. November 2023 via Osmose Productions erscheinen.

This has been a long time in the waiting. Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn‘s iconic film collection “Strange/Strange Too” are to be released for the first time ever on DVD & Blu-Ray. The release will be available via Sony Music Entertainment on Friday, December 8. In the USA, Canada and Mexico the title will be released through Warner Music Group. Previously available as individual titles in VHS and Laserdisc formats (now out-of-print and highly collectible), “Strange” (1988) and “Strange Too” (1990) are now available for the first-time as a single collection.

The material on the set has been freshly restored from the original Super 8 sources and will include 11 music videos and 6 previously unreleased outtake ‘Vignettes’. When assembling the final edits for “Strange” and “Strange Too”, Corbijn created a visual running order where the individual music videos are perceived as one continuous film, with additional interstitial content not seen in the original clips.

The digipak release will come with a 16-page concertina booklet featuring photographs and new liner notes penned by Anton Corbijn

For those who fear that the grainy quality of the videos will be lost, don’t worry, the physical nature of Super 8 film means that the stock’s rough and grainy quality becomes part of the finished film’s inherent aesthetic. The film restoration itself underwent a rigorous process over the course of several years with the participation of personnel involved in making the original films including Anton Corbijn. Because this Blu-Ray/DVD release was created from the original Super 8 film stock, the final result may seemingly lack the visual clarity that modern viewers associate with contemporary HD 4k reproduction. In some occasions where the original footage had deteriorated too much, the next best source was used.

First released in 1988 as “Strange – A Black and White Mode by Anton Corbijn,”, “Strange” featured the first five Depeche Mode music clips directed by Anton Corbijn, who shot them mostly in black and white Super 8. “Strange” included the three main singles from “Music for the Masses”, the final “Black Celebration” single (“A Question of Time”) and “Pimpf,” the instrumental closing “Music for the Masses”.

The idea to make this into a connected series of little films and fake interviews came late into the process of shooting these,” wrote Corbijn. “I was shooting all the films myself on black/white Super 8 film. We put all this together on a shoestring budget; those were that kind of days. We have to look at these films in the light of us being young; we were experimenting and I am happy we were given that space at the time by Daniel Miller.”

Grundlagenwerk der amerikanischen Church of Satan

In “Die Satanische Bibel” fasst Anton Szandor LaVey seine Erkenntnisse und Überzeugungen zum Thema Satanismus zusammen, die er im Laufe seines ungewöhnlichen Lebenswegs als Orgelspieler, Löwenbändiger, Kriminologe, Schauspieler, Magier und durch das umfangreiche Studium der dunklen Künste erworben hat.

Neben den 9 satanischen Grundsätzen und philosophischen Gedanken Anton Szandor LaVeys zu den Themen Liebe, Hass, Sex und Tod enthält das Buch zahlreiche praktische Anregungen für das Alltagsleben, wie den Umgang mit psychischen Vampiren oder das Gesetz des Dschungels.

Der zweite Teil des Doppelbandes enthält das Buch “Die Satanischen Rituale” von Anton Szandor LaVey, mit Beispielen von Ritualen aus verschiedenen Kulturkreisen. Diese sind in der jeweiligen Originalsprache abgedruckt und durch Erläuterungen über ihre Entstehung, den historischen Hintergrund und ihren Zweck ergänzt. .

RESTLESS SPIRITs drittes Album "Afterimage" trifft das Ziel des Ostküsten-Trios, nie genau so klingen zu wollen wie zuvor, voll ins Schwarze. Ihr heiß frittierter Long Island Gitarrensound trifft auf stampfende Rhythmen und emotional aufgerauten Gesang. Während der Vorgänger "Blood of the Old Gods" (2021) den Hörer mitunter in ein komplexes Labyrinth führte, liefert "Afterimage" kurze, scharfe Schocker ab. Lyrisch haben Tragödien und persönlicher Verlust "Afterimage" geprägt. Sänger und Gitarrist Paul Aloisio schüttet Herz und Seele auf diesem Album aus. Der Kern von RESTLESS SPIRIT, Aloisio und Bassist Marc Morello, lernte sich schon vor dem Kindergarten kennen, wuchs zusammen auf und entdeckte dann gemeinsam die Musik. Die Freunde verwandelten zunächst ihre Einflüsse wie BLACK SABBATH, TYPE O NEGATIVE und THE SWORD in aggressiven, modernen Metal, indem sie Elemente aus Stoner Doom, dynamische Wechsel und rauen Gesang einbauten. Im Jahre 2019 tauften sie ihre Band schließlich auf den Namen RESTLESS SPIRIT. Das Debütalbum "Lord of the New Depression" (2019) passte gleichermaßen in die Schubladen für Stoner Rock, Doom Metal und Sludge. Auf dem Nachfolger "Blood of the Old Gods" entwickelte das Trio dann einen abwechslungsreicheren, melodischeren Ansatz mit mehr Komplexität. Die französische Modern Metal- / Metalcore-Band NOVELISTS präsentiert einen weiteren neuen Song mit einem Musikvideo: “Prisoner” bei YouTube.

Zudem kommt die Formation im Februar 2024 auf Headliner-Tour durch Europa. Als Support mit dabei sind THE WORD ALIVE, ELWOOD STRAY sowie ASHEN.

Erst seit September 2023 ist die Formation überhaupt wieder komplett: Den vakanten Posten am Mikro – im Frühjahr 2023 trennte sie die Formation von Tobias Rische – übernimmt seitdem Sängerin Camille Contreras, die in der Vergangenheit bereits beim Titeltrack des Album “C’est la vie” (2020) ein Gast-Feature beisteuerte. NOVELISTS erklären:

Background/Info: German duo Oliver Uckermann – Birgit Strunz strike back with their first new work in fifteen years. The work features four new songs plus three little extras getting us back to the past.

Content: Stillste Stund sounds as time had no weight on their work. This is good-old Gothic music in the purest German tradition of the genre. It’s filled with bombastic sound arrangements and drama which you’ll notice in the vocals. One of the new songs sounds more Club-driven and features an irresistible Electro tune. The last songs are like a little bonus for the fans featuring a remix of “Marsch in Unscha​̈​rfe Verlorener”.

+ + + : Time hasn’t clearly attempted the band’s creativity and sounds like getting back to the 90s German Goth scene. I like the typical theatrical production of the vocals and dramatic moods recovering the songs. The new songs are pretty cool featuring the hit “Nacht & Nebel” which is an Industrial-Goth song for the dancefloors.

– – – : Stillste Stund sounds a bit outdated like a signal from a distant past although Gothic lovers will be pleased.

Conclusion: Stillste Stund makes a surprising but successful comeback.

Background/Info: Five years after their previous full length album and one year after the excellent “Leitbild Angst”-EP we finally get the new opus by German Goth veterans Still Patient? The album deals with love, pain and melancholy.

The songs are holding on the heavy Goth-Rock influences carried by solid guitar play and catchy elements in the choruses. The softer cuts are totally expressing the theme of melancholy although evolving into an outburst chorus.

+ + + : Still Patient? no longer has anything to prove. This band is just playing the music they like mixing different elements together although based upon a solid Goth basis. They sometimes remind me of the uncompromised approach of London After Midnight. The songs have been meticulously built up but always carried by impressive guitar play and deep, resonating, vocal lines. Songs like “Looking Glass”, “Sacrifice In Paradise”, the very Sisters Of Mercy-like “All Dead” and the EP-song “Trees Falling II” are great exposures of the band’s genius. And I also have to mention the opening cut “The Beginning” which sounds a bit different although being a master piece for its mysterious sound atmosphere.

– – – : There’re less songs to throw away which says enough about the high qualitative level of the album.

Portland post-punk act Sky Lions presents its newest single “Werewolves”, taken from their debut album “Inside The Circle”. The duo is made up of Radio Sloan and Outer Stace, who over the years have performed with or as a part of Courtney Love’s band, Peaches’ band, and more.

Outer Stace says this about the new single: “Werewolves, in part, is about the idea of shifting from our outer selves to our inner selves, the fleeting peace that can bring; transformation and adaptation… So, the art direction possibilities were pretty endless. It was a lot of fun to create the different versions of ourselves that we could be.”

Radio Sloan adds: “Our sound is that of accepting existence for all its flaws. Sky Lions has a darkness that isn’t entirely heavy metal, post-punk or darkwave. Rather, it’s a culmination of who we have been, who we currently are, and how we interpret the world around us”.

Die Psychedelic Rock-Band ANANDA MIDA hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Swamp Thing” mit “The Stumbling Doll” ein Lyric-Video ihres kommenden Albums “Reconciler” veröffentlicht. Es ist das dritte Album der internationalen Band, der Davide Bressan, Max Ear, CONNY OCHS, Pablo Scolaro und Alessandro Tedesco angehören.

“Reconciler” schließt eine Album-Trilogie ab, die frei inspiriert von Georges IvanoviÄ� Gurdjieffs Buch “Beelzebubs Erzählungen für seinen Enkel” ist. Erscheinen wird das Album am 3. November 2023 via Go Down Records.

Amidst the shifting spectrum of our contemporary malaise emerges Dräger, the creative embodiment of multi-faceted artist Spencer Draeger. Meandering through the resonance of days gone by while foretelling stories of the morrow, Dräger’s influence pulsates with the soulful rhythms of a generation steeped in contemplative musing and melancholic reflection. This is the first of two All Hallows offerings from Dräger.

In ancient and medieval mythology, the Succubus is depicted as a beguiling female demon or supernatural entity that visits men during their slumbers to engage in intimate relations, often with the aim of draining their life force or vitality. These nocturnal visitations sometimes result in the birth of demonic offspring. Originating from European folklore, the legend of the Succubus has been intertwined with fears of the unknown, nocturnal temptations, and unexplained pregnancies. They often symbolize seduction and the perils of unchecked desires. Their male counterparts, the Incubi, operate in a similar fashion, preying on unsuspecting women as they sleep. The tales surrounding these entities serve as cautionary tales about the dangers of unchecked lust and the supernatural consequences of yielding to temptation.

Dräger is no stranger to the dangers of a succubus in his personal life, and following this particular relationship’s dramatic demise, he took charge of his own recovery by finding solace in songwriting. Succubus sounds like a long-lost INXS track, with shades of the most anthemic Depeche Mode songs bleeding through. Where is the line drawn between love’s genuine embrace and the clutches of addiction? The composition grapples with this quandary, suggesting that these two states cannot coexist peacefully when one party malevolently thrives on such devotion, neglecting to return that boundless affection. If one plays the fool too much, it can even be deadly.

“Like in some kind of Shakespearean nightmare, I was deeply in love with someone draining the essence of who I was and despite all logic that person was the only one I wanted,” he recalls. “Tragically, unconditional love came at the expense of my physical and mental well-being, even though my feelings and love for her never changed. I actually had a friend visit me in Brooklyn from LA while on tour that I hadn’t seen in a while and he called me up after he returned home and was worried how I had changed. He said I looked like a shell of myself that he didn’t recognize and that I needed to make a change in relationship. The theme of my coming album, Delusions of Grandeur, is rooted in this sense of wanting the things that will break you. For me a lot of it was just the one woman I loved. My sweet succubus.”

Drawing inspiration from the audacious ethos of punk, the dream-infused rhythms of 80’s synthpop, and the hallucinogenic embrace of the 90s, we eagerly anticipate Dräger’s sophomore album, Delusions of Grandeur, slated for a 2024 release. The album is set to deftly navigate profound themes of technology, romance, and a society teetering on the brink of a complex narrative, delicately balancing wit with a hint of cynicism. Channelling the essence of Crystal Castles, Ladytron, and Chromatics, the album stands as an inviting beacon in the realm of synthpop brilliance.

BESVÄRJELSEN haben auf beeindruckende Weise eine Antwort in den dunklen Wäldern ihrer schwedischen Heimat Dalarna gefunden. Aufgewachsen am Schnittpunkt altnordischer und finnischer Kulturen im hohen Norden, umgeben von Runen und alten Göttern, Schamanen und Geistern, hat das fesselnde Quintett seinen Namen aus dem schwedischen Wort für "Beschwörung" abgeleitet. Außerdem lassen sich die Nordschweden nur zu gern von lokalen Überlieferungen, der Mystik und den dunklen, alten Musiktraditionen ihrer Heimat inspirieren. Doch BESVÄRJELSEN sind alles andere als eine weitere "Pagan Folk"-Band, die sich nach einer Zeit zurücksehnt, die niemals war. Mit wehmütigen Melodien und gleichzeitig mächtiger Riff-Power macht ihr zweites Album "Atlas" einen großen Schritt auf dem Pfad, den BESVÄRJELSEN von Anfang an eingeschlagen haben. Die Gitarristen und Sänger Andreas Baier und Staffan Stensland Vinrot haben die Band im Jahr 2014 mit der klaren Vision gegründet, den Geist und die Traditionen der weiten Wälder Dalarnas, einer Region, die sonst eher für ihre bemalten Holzpferde bekannt ist, in zeitgenössische Heavy-Musik zu transformieren. Als die Sängerin Lea Amling Alazam mit ihrer Leidenschaft für Punk- und Stoner-Rock, die im örtlichen Skatepark im zarten Alter von 13 Jahren begann, zur Besetzung stieß, reduzierten Andreas und Staffan ihren Gesang gerne auf eine Nebenrolle. Die Entscheidung fiel leicht, da Leas unverwechselbare Stimme die Intimität und das Charisma von Sängerinnen wie NINA SIMONE oder AMY WINEHOUSE heraufbeschwört. BESVÄRJELSEN veröffentlichten im Jahr 2015 ihre Debüt-EP "Villfarelser" und kurz darauf folge die "Exil" EP (2016). Das Debütalbum "Vallmo" der Schweden detonierte im Jahr 2018 in Stockholm und schaffte es bis in den staatlichen Rundfunk, kam aber auch anderen Orts hervorragend an. Das Album verband krachende Riffs und stürmische Drums mit ausgefeilten Melodien und nachdenklichen Themen. Mit ihrer Mini-Album "Frost" wollten BESVÄRJELSEN im Jahr 2019 die Bühnen in ganz Europa erobern, bevor auch die Schweden in den nächsten zwei Jahren eine Zwangspause einlegen mussten. Obwohl die Band gezwungen war, getrennt zu komponieren, nutzte BESVÄRJELSEN die freie Zeit, um eine Fülle von Ideen zu sammeln. Diese teilten die Musiker über die Meilen und Monate ihrer relativen Einsamkeit hinweg miteinander, bis sie schließlich im Jahr 2021 die Aufnahmen zu "Atlas" mit dem Produzenten Karl Daniel Lidén begannen. Mit melancholischen Harmonien, die aus dem Skizzenbuch von ALICE IN CHAINS stammen könnten und einer Heaviness, die Windhand zur Ehre gereichen würde, haben BESVÄRJELSEN einen massiven musikalischen Monolithen aus dem lokalen Granit gemeißelt und dann in den magischen Wäldern ihrer Heimat aufgestellt, um dessen Kraftlinien über die gesamte vom Titanen "Atlas" geschulterte Erdkugel zu schicken.

„To The Faithful Departed“ war 1996 das „schwierige dritte Album“ für die irische Band um ihre charismatische Sängerin Dolores O’Riordan. Schwierig deshalb, weil die Band zwei Jahre zuvor mit „Zombie“ einer Mega-Hit hatte und sich das dazugehörige Album „No Need To Argue“ insgesamt 17 Millionen Mal verkaufte. „To The Faithful Departed“ schaffte dagegen nur 6 Millionen und war wegen der zu hohen Erwartungen für das Label ein Flop. Was der Grund dazu war, ist ebenso schwer zu sagen und die Welt zwei Jahre nach „Zombie“ vielleicht eine andere?! Zu dieser Zeit traten schon die ersten mentalen Probleme bei Dolores auf, deren Dämonen ja 2018 letztendlich leider zu ihrem viel zu frühen Abgang führen sollten Musikalisch gesehen ist der Sound des Albums nicht weit vom Vorgänger entfernt und eigentlich typisch für THE CRANBERRIES, was ja allein schon durch die prägnante Stimme von Dolores gegeben ist. Man hatte sich eigentlich vom bisherigen Produzenten Stephen Street (THE SMITHS, Morrissey, BLUR) getrennt, weil man einen härteren Klang anstrebte, der eher ihrem Live-Sound entsprechen sollte. Auf den späteren Alben sollten THE CRANBERRIES dann aber wieder auf die Dienste von Stephen Street zurückgreifen. Erst mal war man dazu für drei Song-Demos mit Tim Palmer (TEARS FOR FEARS) in Paris im Studio. Das Ergebnis erinnerte die Band jedoch immer noch zu sehr an ihren alten Sound, weshalb das Album dann von Bruce Fairbairn (AEROSMITH, AC/DC, VAN HALEN) produziert wurde. Im Nachhinein empfinde ich, wie bereits oben erwähnt, die Unterschiede im Soundbild eher marginal, wenn auch der Klang schon etwas kräftiger ausgepegelt ist. „Salvation“ sticht dabei als richtig bissig-garstige Up-Tempo-Nummer hervor und war als Single-Auskopplung damals sogar halbwegs noch erfolgreich. Womit ich jedoch nicht die restlichen 12 Songs abwerten möchte, denn „To The Faithful Departed“ ist inzwischen sehr gut gealtert, was man jetzt an Hand der aktuellen Deluxe-Edition des Albums noch einmal nachhören kann. Dafür wurde das Material durch John Dent remastert und der einzige Wermutstropfen dabei ist die Revision der gesampleten Schüsse am Ende des Songs „I Just Shot John Lennon“, was für mich einer völlig unnötigen Selbstzensur gleichkommt. Des weiteren wird die Deluxe-Ausgabe noch mit den damaligen Single-B-Seiten angereichert. Richtig interessant für die Fans dürfte die zweite Disk mit den bereits erwähnten drei Paris-Demos + 10 weiteren bisher unveröffentlichte Mixe und Outtakes sein. Oben drauf gibt es bei der 3CD-Edition noch 13 gesammelte Live-Aufnahmen von der „Free To Decide“-Tour 1996 + ein dickes Booklet. Natürlich ist das Album in diesem Zuge endlich auch wieder auf Vinyl erhältlich (erschien 1996 nur noch in einer ganz kleinen Auflage in diesem Format) und man kann hierbei zwischen einer normalen LP und einer Doppel-LP mit Bonus-Tracks wählen. Die 3CD-Ausgabe bietet am Ende jetzt einen deutlichen Mehrwert und rechtfertigt einen Neukauf, selbst wenn man das Original von 1996 oder die „The Complete Sessions“ von 2002 schon hat. So oder so bleibt „To The Faithful Departed“ ein starkes Album, welches selbst 23 Jahre später noch recht frisch klingt und man es sich sehr gut anhören kann! Ruhe in Frieden Dolores, ich konnte Dich irgendwie gut leiden und wäre super, wenn die restlichen drei Werke von THE CRANBERRIES ebenso noch eine ähnliche schöne Deluxe-Aufwertung erfahren würden. Im September 2023 meldeten sich JOB FOR A COWBOY nach einer langen Pause mit der Single “The Agony Seeping Storm” bei YouTube zurück – nun gibt es auch Details zu einem neuen Album: Die neue Platte heißt “Moon Healer” und wird am 23. Februar 2024 via via Metal Blade Records veröffentlicht.

Reinhören kann man ab sofort auch in den Song “The Forever Rot”, zu dem es auch einen Video-Clip gibt.

Gute zehn Jahre sind seit dem letzten Album der Band vergangen, Sänger Jonny Davy nennt die Gründe für die Auszeit:

“Ich musste aus familiären Gründen mit der Band einfach langsamer machen, diese Situation brachte uns an einen Scheideweg und wir alle gingen unsere eigenen Wege: Vaterschaft, zusätzliche Musikprojekte, akademische Abschlüsse und Karrieren außerhalb der Band hatten Vorrang und standen im Mittelpunkt unserer Leben. Doch nun ist die Zeit für ewas Neues gekommen.

“Moon Healer ” entstand in Sanford, Florida mit Produzent Jason Suecof im Audiohammer Studio. Den Hintergrund des Albums beschreibt Davy so:

Das Albumkonzept wurde von einem engen Freund inspiriert, der sich mittels Drogenmissbrauch auf die Suche nach tiefgreifender Erleuchtung begeben hat. Er machte immer mehr religiös anmutender Experimente, bis die ersten Symptome einer bipolaren Störung und Schizophrenie auftraten. Er war überzeugt, durch halluzinogene Rauschzustände Zugang zu einer alternativen, esoterischen Realität zu haben, in der er gnostischen und biblischen Figuren begegnete. Die Songs spiegeln seine Gedanken und Erfahrungen wider.”

Leaving behind New York’s frenetic pace and embracing the deep cultural milieu of France, Charles Rowell, renowned for his contributions to Crocodiles, Flowers of Evil, and Issue, embarked on a rejuvenating journey in 2020 with his latest venture, Crush of Souls. Marrying new wave with gothic rock undertones, the project creates an enchanting blend of innovation and evocation.

The new album by Crush of Souls, titled (A)Void Love, brilliantly blends together various musical styles. The gentle strumming of acoustic guitars blends seamlessly with the grandiose sound of synthesizers, creating a powerful and emotional musical experience that can be enjoyed across a range of rhythms. Throughout the album, listeners can hear elements of minimalist electronics, the coolness of cold wave, and the allure of synth-pop, all while the compositions maintain an enduring charm.

The album’s latest single, “Who Will Silence The Pigs?” has been released, along with its visually captivating narrative. The song seamlessly blends poignant melodies similar to those of Nick Cave with foundational electronic rhythms reminiscent of Martin Rev, resulting in a fusion of melancholic lyrics and raw, industrial grit. Imagine an enthralling collaboration between Stiv Bators (during his days with The Lords of the New Church), Ian McCulloch, and Tony Wakeford in a unique recording session.

The lyrics confront oppressive forces, metaphorically labeled as “pigs,” who exploit hope, faith, and genuine emotions. These forces emerge from secrecy, imposing constraints and deceit. Amidst this turmoil, the lyrics yearn for retribution and liberation, posing the repeated question: Who will put an end to these suppressors?

The video, a cinematic piece filmed in Soligny-La-Trappe and Saint-Maurice-sur-Dargoie by Laure Rowell and David Claxton and featuring the Rowells’ son Ozzie, delves deep into the perennial theme of duality, all set against the picturesque backdrop of the French pastoral landscape.

”It’s a story as old as time; life and death, heaven and hell,” says Rowell. “Where they meet and where they part. In this mini epic, we watch Charles traverse the netherworld and play scrabble with Death. He exits the lush divinity of family life and plays God with the John Gotti of the afterlife.”

Who Will Silence The Pigs? was co-produced and mixed by Tim Gainet and mastered by Will Killingsworth.

There’s always been a thread of synth-punk, deathrock, and DIY noise running through all of Charles’ projects, however, Crush Of Souls pushes harder and further into the darkness with the new album (A)Void Love.  The LP was written throughout intense insomnia that coincided with a run of shows playing guitar for Australian legend Harry Howard. Crush Of Soul’s main man finally found rest after writing and recording the last song entitled World of Fear. Six months prior, he had quit his job as a chef, traveled east to Prague for inspiration, and returned ragged and sleepless. Rowell’s insistence on keeping the instrumentation clean and straightforward came from an arduous two years of literal blood, sweat, and tears. Every bit of drama, eastern excursion, and sleep psychosis can be found within the walls of (A)Void Love. The album is available for streaming and can be ordered now on a lovely smoked vinyl LP, limited to 300, via AVANT! Richie Hawtin and Mute have announced the 30th anniversary edition of Plastikman’s debut album, “Sheet One”, set for release on BioVinyl, remastered from the original masters and available via sublabel NovaMute on double vinyl on 1 December 2003. The release has also been remastered for digital re-release, courtesy of Manmade Mastering from Berlin.

And BioVinyl? Well those are vinyl records made from bio-based PVC.

Plastikman is one of Richie Hawtin’s alter egos, and “Sheet One” was the first in a series of releases. The album was the beginning of a long creative relationship between Richie Hawtin and Mute resulting in six albums offering contemporary electronic music. The series of Plastikman vinyl reissues will continue in 2024.

Richie Hawtin comments like this: “After a few years of experimenting with equipment and techniques, I slowly started to find my own unique direction and sound by digging deep into the possibilities of the Roland TB303. The first crucial steps were the F.U.S.E. tracks ‘F.U.’ and ‘Substance Abuse,’ both throbbing dancefloor inspired physical work-outs. That led to my idea of taking the sound of my style of Acid deeper into a more cerebral long-form experiment that became the foundation of ‘Sheet One.’ Recorded mostly over an intense 48 hour period, the album came alive as I paired the Roland TR606 drum machine to the TB303 for my first time, which opened the doorway into this unique Hawtin trip! ”

Daniel Miller from Mute is clear about his appreciation of Hawtin: “(A) pure electronic music innovator!”

2023 is also the anniversary of “Dimension Intrusion” by his other alter ego F.U.S.E. for the Artificial Intelligence series on WARP (which gets a reissue on 10 November).

In an unexpected rendezvous at a 1985 concert, two budding Swiss musicians, Ralf Aerne and Reto Caduff, were inspired to establish <a href="http://instagram.com/seance.band">Séance</a>. Their innovation placed them in the vanguard of the burgeoning synth and electro scene in Switzerland, akin to the styles of luminaries such as Yello and Grauzone.

“In our early days, there were only a few Swiss bands playing this kind of music,” recalls Aerne.

Séance’s distinctive resonance drew packed audiences, initially captivating Switzerland and subsequently extending their influence to venues in France and Denmark. Their track, Blue Dolphin Blue, addressing the perplexing beach strandings of dolphins and whales, resonated deeply with a younger audience. Underpinned by an insistent rhythm and chime-like synth notes, its verses poignantly criticize humanity’s indifference.

Time, however, would eventually scatter the pair. Reto Caduff journeyed to the US, immersing himself in the world of music videos and documentaries. Ralf Aerne, on the other hand, inaugurated Audioklinik in Zurich, a haven for analogue synthesizer enthusiasts, before taking up residence in southern France. The two drifted, both from the limelight and, to some extent, from one another.

Yet, after a three-decade hiatus, 2019 marked a serendipitous reunion for the Swiss pair. With both returning to their homeland, Aerne felt the familiar tug of musical creation once more.

“It felt like I was rediscovering something with it that had been missing for a long time,” he says.

It was clear to him that he wanted to pick up where he had last left off: so he got in touch with Caduff to make music together again. In 2020, the reunited band released the album “Where We Came From,” produced by David M. Allen, who has already worked with Depeche Mode, Sisters of Mercy and The Cure, and whom Reto Caduff met while working on a documentary film. “Where We Came From” testifies to a great desire to play – so the duo’s characteristic electro sound is paired with other styles and influences in places – and reflects on the relationship between the past and the present.

It is a testament to the bands creativity that Séance is hard to pigeonhole or compare to other bands, they have carved out a niche that is clearly influenced by postpunk and synthpop, yet not defined by it. 

“Especially technically, of course, a lot has changed in the last decades,” says Ralf Aerne, who notes that now their music can be heard globally online and that computers can be used live without the long loading times of 80s floppy discs.

“But we still produce most of our sounds with analogue synths,” says Aerne.

Following their return to the music scene with the 2020 full length album Where We Came From, Reto Caduff and Ralf Aerne have etched another intriguing chapter in their storied history with the release of their follow-up record, Dark Flow.

As its evocative title suggests, the album echoes the pulsating rhythms and moody harmonies reminiscent of 80s synth-pop, harkening back to the duo’s earliest influences.



In Aerne’s reflections, one can discern a sentiment: recurring motifs, akin to the underlying threads of culture, tend to resurface or metamorphose at a leisurely, almost imperceptible rhythm. This is palpable in the thematic symmetry of Séance’s oeuvre, both past and contemporary. The album commences with the invigorating Follow The Leader, a piece that evokes memories of Depeche Mode’s early dalliances, replete with melancholic synth intricacies. Swiftly s쳮ding this is Le Max, a radiant, brisk number punctuated by an exhilarating interlude.



The title track, Dark Flow follows, a solemn, almost phantasmal lament adorned with spectral synthesizer touches. Subsequently, Stargazing guides listeners through a nocturnal expanse, its melody imbued with cosmic undertones that pay homage to darkwave nuances. Rounding off this auditory journey is Bubbles, a track whose cadence may be more deliberate, but which carries with it a spirited, anthem-like refrain.

No No Future embarks on a path reminiscent of Devo’s distinctive flair, punctuated by vivid synthesizer embellishments. Meanwhile, Amour Fou — a moniker echoing the French phrase for impassioned love — is a more tempestuous composition, its vocals leaving an indelible mark on the listener. Next comes Zoonosis, a stomping synthpop track with percussion emulating a military tattoo. Too Heavy To Fly treads familiar Depeche Mode ground, crowned by a chorus that bursts forth with anthem-like vigour.

The final song Carnivore, a standout from Dark Flow, broaches a subject similar to their earlier hit, Blue Dolphin Blue. It challenges the prevailing assumption of human primacy over other creatures. “Blood mars the grip of the carnivore,” Aerne intones, occasionally punctuated by the haunting cry of wolves. Carnivore masterfully navigates the synth soundscape, resurrecting what made the 80s and early 90s indelible: the blend of poignant, atmospheric melodies with rhythms that beckon listeners to dance in dimly lit venues wreathed in mist.

The Swedish gothic rock act Scheitan has recorded a cover of the Billy Idol track “White Wedding”.

Scheitan have recently returned following a 24-year hiatus, and will release a new album “Songs for the Gothic People” in Spring 2024 via the Greek independent label The Circle Music. The new album further explores the gothic vibe that was present on their ”Nemesis” album, released by Century Media Records in 1999.

I will now keep working on the upcoming album and perhaps throw in one or two more cover tracks along the way.”

Scheitan was formed in 1996 by Pierre Törnkvist (guitar/bass/vocals) together with Oscar Karlsson (drums). The duo started out as a black metal band but transformed during the musical journey into the fields of gothic/ambient rock. Both members had previous musical experience mainly from death and black metal such as The Moaning, Defleshed, The Everdawn and Gates of Ishtar to name a few.

The musical style was now completely devoted to the gothic/ambient/dark domain except for the vocals of Pierre Törnkvist who were still kept in the harsh style present on earlier albums. When it was time to write new Scheitan material after “Nemesis” both Pierre and Oscar felt that it did not fit into the project and therefore Helltrain was started, which is a completely different story.

Scheitan went on a 24-year hiatus but was brought back to life in 2023 with the single “Lost In Time”, a gothic rock track in the veins of Sisters of Mercy, Fields of The Nephilim and The 69 Eyes. A few weeks prior to the release of the single “Lost in Time” Scheitan signed to Greek label The Circle Music and is set to release a full-length album in 2024.

IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT setzen ihre Reihe von Coverversionen fort und haben nun auch ihre Interpretation des METALLICA-Stücks “Motorbreath” als Audiostream veröffentlicht.

Zuvor gab es schon den RUSH-Song “Jacob’s Ladder” bei YouTube. Bassist Steve Blanco erklärt, warum die Band gerade diesen Song aufgenommen hat:

“Einflüsse von RUSH sind überall in der härteren Musik zu finden. Wir denken zwar, dass wir uns musikalisch sehr von ihnen unterscheiden, dennoch gibt es ein starkes Band, das uns zusammenhält. Als große Fans ihres gigantischen Werks wollten wir mit einem Cover dieser großartigen, einzigartigen Band Tribut zollen. Das Coverbild spiegelt außerdem das legendäre ‘Permanent Waves’-Artwork wider.”

Vor kurzem hatten veröffentlichten IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT zwei weitere Covers veröffentlicht: “A Night In Tunisia” , im Original von Dizzy Gillespie und “Paranoid Android” von RADIOHEAD.

Gründungsmitglied Mike Portnoy ist wieder bei DREAM THEATER. Die Band will nun in der Besetzung Mike Portnoy (Schlagzeug),  John Petrucci (Gitarre), John Myung (Bass), James LaBrie (Gesang) und Jordan Rudess (Keyboards) mit den Arbeiten am ihrem 16. Studioalbum beginnen.

Der bisherige Schlagzeuger Drummer Mike Mangini wird die Band verlassen.

Die Statements der Musiker zum Besetzungswechsel:

“I understand Dream Theater’s decision to get Mike Portnoy back at this time,” states Mike Mangini. “As was said from Day 1, my place was not to fill all the roles that Mike held in the band. I was to play the drums in order to help the band carry on. My main role of keeping our live show working tightly on a nightly basis was an intense and rewarding experience. Thankfully, I got to experience playing music with these iconic musicians, as well as some fun times laced with humor. I also really enjoyed spending lots of time with the crew.  And then there’s the GRAMMY® win, which was amazingly satisfying. To the fans: thank you so much for being amazing to me. I cherish the pictures I have of you all losing your minds and having fun. Finally, I really love the band, crew and management and wish them and the entire organization all the best.”

Growing up in Los Angeles, young singer-songwriter <a href="https://www.instagram.com/devonthompsonmusic/">Devon Thompson</a> often found herself on the periphery, a solitary figure amidst the urban expanse. Derided in her formative years for her artistic inclinations, such trials only honed her artistic resilience. With the aim of distancing her from the caprices of youth, she transitioned between educational institutions more than once. This, paradoxically, may have deepened her sense of solitude, yet it also nurtured her creative instincts as a refuge.

“When I struggle mentally, I use my writing for good and create stories where I can more positively influence myself,” she explains. “Even if the concept is dark, it helps me so much to write about it, and write about it from someone else’s perspective.”

So Close is for the people who love those moody, dark, intense, hot songs that make you feel almost feral and crazy… but in a good way,” she explains, describing the song as a ‘hot, dark, intense , fictional slow burn about a serial killer in love.  “One moment, they’re in a happy, loving relationship, and the next, they’re fantasizing about how beautiful their headstone would look with flowers all over it,” she jokes.

Penning motifs reminiscent of gothic sensibilities, So Close evokes the journey of a usually buoyant spirit venturing into its more introspective, somber corners. The ethereal strumming of the guitar paired with the gravelly, evocative vocals ensures that listeners traverse a dreamscape of alluring nocturnal reverie.

“I was on a little bit of a ‘serial killer documentary’ kick when I got the inspiration for this song,” she confesses. “It’s essentially a fictional story about a person who goes mad and kills their lover. Why did they do it? Did they do it because they’re just crazy? Did someone tell them to do it? In my head, they’ve been a serial killer all along, and one day something snaps in them, and all they can think about is the poetry and the beauty in their lover being buried in a beautiful garden.”

Adopting a cinematic touch reminiscent of vintage B-films, the evocative visual accompaniment to the single, masterfully directed by Bianca Cruz, portrays Devon in a rather lethal disposition, exacting a heart-piercing act on her unsuspecting paramour. Though the song charts a more straightforward path, the emotional undercurrents of the video invite various interpretations. For Thompson, it’s less an ode to malevolence than a whimsical tale, galvanized by passion.

“In my head, it’s sort of a Beetlejuice-kinda story where I’m already dead, but my lover isn’t,” she laughs. “I kill him and bring him back to life so we can exist as the dead together cuz it’s more romantic.”

In many urban landscapes, the sensation of being on the fringes can be a desolate journey. Yet, for Thompson, Los Angeles seemed to cultivate this sentiment as almost a rite of passage. Drawn to the timeless allure of classic rock and other individual pursuits like skateboarding and snowboarding, she navigated the challenges of adolescent taunts, the quest for belonging, and a transient academic history, ultimately grounding herself in the world of music.

By the age of 21, she has gracefully transitioned from nascent high school band experiences and overcome the sting of youthful mockery to firmly establish herself as a rock musician, seemingly undistracted by the contemporary pull of pop and hip-hop. Possessing a vocal prowess that brings to mind greats like PJ Harvey, Blondie, or Lucy Dacus, combined with her flair for darkly poetic narratives, Devon resonates as a timeless artist.

“I might be young, but music has been my life for eleven or twelve years now,” she said. “It’s been my life forever. I eventually realized I can’t do anything else, dropped out of college, and decided to do this. I work my ass off to make my songs original, to get better at guitar, and on my songwriting. I want to make a life for myself as an artist, following up some of the female musicians that really made a difference.”

“So Close” is out tomorrow via Exquisite Feline. It was produced by James Salter (The Raveonettes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club).

“We were just going to do six songs together and part ways, but we had something going,” she explains. Bonding over a shared love for the 4AD shoegaze band Lush, Devon and Salters continued to collaborate which resulted in a wealth of new music, more of which is planned for release in 2024.

Daemon Grey explains this about the album: “Daemonic certainly marks a dream, or beautiful nightmare, come true for me. After years of planning and writing, I was able to create what I wanted to create, from the soul, which I think is really all an artist can hope for. Absolutely thrilled, and grateful, to share the record alongside Out Of Line music.
