E<a href="https://instagram.com/ekko_the_strange?igshid=MzMyNGUyNmU2YQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr">kko the Strange</a> crafts a decadent musical landscape in his latest album, Mystique. In this second venture, the album unfolds like the hours of twilight, tempting listeners with tantalizing rhythms and otherworldly keys, urging them into the delights of the evening. Ekko explains that his moniker is a nod to life’s little quirks.The rich cool vibes of Mystique are drawn from the unique sensations of travel, reminiscent of the intrigue and estrangement Bowie captured while in Berlin.

The lyrics to Ekko’s latest single, Vamps, convey a deep emotional journey of two individuals drawn together by a powerful, perhaps forbidden, attraction. The repeated phrase “sin after sin” suggests a repetitive cycle of actions, possibly mistakes or risks, that ultimately lead to rebirth and transcendence. The night and moonlight act as guiding forces, emphasizing mystery and transformation. Its shuddering goth plume of melody and whispers envelop the listener in glorious, urgent intrigue.

“‘Vamps’ is about realizing that we all are a circle of animals surrounded by wrongs yet breaking free from the stigmas and fucked-up views that the world can place upon us,” he says. “Solidarity in chaos.”

In the captivating video helmed by Talena Garten, a forest-bound young woman stumbles upon an arcane gathering: fire eaters, conjurers, and night beings. They’re immersed in a dance and fire-lit ritual, seemingly venerating a mysterious, sorceress-like figure.

Ekko wears many hats for Mystique – writer, performer, and self-producer. He’s fashioned a collection of stirring, moody songs set against a backdrop of echoing vastness. Born from the muted expanses of Les Bois, ID, he’s presently found more often in Warszawa, Poland. The album got its finishing touches with J. Todd Dunnigan stateside, and a polish by Branden Funkhouser at Radiohouse.

“Living in Warsaw, Poland has inspired this record and my first record as well,” he says. “The city was destroyed during World War II. Since then, it has been rebuilt ashes of the past. I have great respect for the Polish people and the people of Central and Eastern Europe. I’ve developed some great friendships and have been inspired by different aspects of cultures outside of America. People, places, and life experiences have directly inspired this record.”

Ekko The Strange unveiled his earlier LP, Haunting Me, in 2020, but the era’s curveballs put the brakes on performances. Discussing his recent work, he feels Mystique has more depth than its predecessor. While retaining the profound ambiance of the debut, it adds a richer shade through haunting guitar nuances and raw synth beats. Die Instrumental Progressive / Post-Rock-Band BASSOON hat nach dem Opener “Omnidolent” und dem Video zu “Pentisept” mit “Cyclops” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Succumbent” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Bassoon” (2012) das zweite Album des Trios aus New York, welches aus Bassist und Keyboarder Stuart Popejoy, der auch für das Cover-Artwork verantwortlich zeichnet, Gitarrist Sean Moran sowie Drummer John Mettam besteht.

“Succumbent” wurde gemeinsam mit Tony Maimone im Studio G in Brooklyn aufgenommen und gemixt und von Alan Douches gemastert. Erscheinen wird das Album am 17. November 2023 via Nefarious Industries.

Die deutsche Death Metal Band FALL OF SERENITY veröffentlicht ihr erstes neues Werk seit 16 Jahren. 2007 veröffentlichten FALL OF SERENITY „The Crossfire“ auf LIFEFORCE RECORDS, ihr letztes Album, das ihre Entwicklung aufzeigte und einen Hinweis auf die breiteren musikalischen Horizonte gab, die sie in den kommenden Jahren erkunden würden. Jetzt, 16 Jahre später, kehrt die Band zu ihrem alten Label zurück, um ihr neues Album „Open Wide, O Hell“ zu veröffentlichen, das am 22. 2007 veröffentlichten FALL OF SERENITY ihr bis dato letztes Album “The Crossfire”. Nach langer Pause, 2009 verkündete die Band ihre Auflösung, sind FALL OF SERENITY nun zurück und versprechen eine Neuorientierung in Richtung Black Metal.

In 2007, musician Daniele Giustra felt a strong urge to express himself through innovative forms of music. In order to fulfill his creative needs, he formed the darkwave project <a href="https://www.instagram.com/selfishadows/">SELFISHADOWS.</a> Through this undertaking, he was able to explore new musical possibilities and surpass the limits of his creativity.

By combining contemporary and retro synthesizers, meaningful lyrics, and electronic drums, Giustra creates an atmosphere that is full of emotions. Blending wave and glitch, SELFISHADOWS achieves a therapeutic, austere, yet understated chant.

Giustra’s latest single release, the title track of his recent album Everything Changes, is a beautiful composition that delves into introspection and tender nostalgia. The lyrics explore themes of change, uncertainty, and fleeting knowledge and create a sense of constant movement, interspersed with moments of introspection, and acceptance of inevitable failures. The repeated phrases underline the cyclical pattern of seeking understanding, facing challenges, and the juxtaposition of decline with soaring aspirations. Through this song, the transient nature of life and the human quest for meaning is presented in a captivating way.

The visually arresting video for “Everything Changes” was directed by Valentina Battiato of Parallelo Studio. It employs a prism-centric approach to delve into the intricate themes of the song, using landscapes and florals to conjure a phantasmagorical imagery that mirrors Sir John Everett Millais’ painting of Shakespeare’s Ophelia, or the medieval romanticism and enigmatic symbolism of Elaine of Astolat from Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott.” The video is both romantic and cautious, capturing the essence of the song in a mesmerizing way.

Giustra, in this representation, seems to drift towards another dimension, rendering the piece both ethereal and contemplative.

Hailing from Austin, TX, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bloodyknivesmusic/">Bloody Knives</a> is a trio that boasts the combined talents of Preston Maddox, who lends his voice while also managing vocals, synths, and guitar; Jake McCown, overseeing drums, synths, and the visual arts; and Jim Moon, who delves into synths and sound crafting. Since their inception in 2009, the ensemble has crafted a signature sound, a unique blend evoking shades of industrial, shoegaze, post-punk, drum and bass, ambient soundscapes, noise, and electronica, often referred to as an ethereal convergence of nightmare dream-rock and future punk.

Their latest offering, New Moon, offers a reflection on the cyclical nature of life — the idea that even in the midst of adversity or darkness, there’s always an opportunity for a fresh start, akin to the cyclical rebirth of the moon. Its origins, interestingly, predate some of the band’s more recent instrumental shifts. The initial demo was crafted before Maddox transitioned from the bass to the more melodic and expansive guitar, and before the return of Jim, a pivotal member whose presence undoubtedly influences the group’s sonic chemistry.

“New Moon is about new beginnings in dark times,” says Preston Maddox.

What began as a rudimentary “weird electronic demo,” in Maddox’s own words, might typically have been discarded in the pre-recording cull that many bands undergo, sieving out less-promising material. However, New Moon defies this norm. The addition of the guitar, coupled with a thoughtful application of effects, transformed the track from its embryonic state to something grander. It metamorphosed into an expansive, atmospheric composition, echoing its theme of transformation and rebirth.

This musical journey — from a raw electronic sketch to a layered atmospheric soundscape — showcases the band’s creativity and the magic that can emerge from collaborative reinvention.

The visual accompaniment for “New Moon” delivers an unvarnished, glitch-infused rendition from the ensemble, evoking the nostalgic aura of a transmission beamed through a 1980s-era satellite dish or the ghostly messages of an EVP.

Die Symphonic Metal-Band SERENITY hat ein neues Album veröffentlicht: “Nemesis AD” erschien am 27. Oktober 2023 via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Zum Preview-Song “The End Of Babylon” gibt es nun ein Lyric-Video bei YouTube.

Auch zu “Reflections (of AD)” hat die Band einen Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Zuvor wurde mit “The Fall Of Man” ein Lyric-Video bei YouTube veröffentlicht, bei dem zudem Roy Khan (CONCEPTION) als Gast mitwirkt.

Zuvor gab es bereits die Single “Ritter, Tod und Teufel (Knightfall)”, zu welcher die Österreicher ein Musikvideo produziert haben. Den Song kommentiert die Formation wie folgt:

The Balkan heartlands have yielded a bountiful creative harvest for <a href="https://www.instagram.com/voyvodaxsofia/">Voyvoda</a>, as well as cultivating a reputation for cultural rebellion through their post-punk melodies. In a globe swamped by gloom, and with Bulgaria grappling with its storms, Voyvoda’s tunes hit a poignant note. The Sofia band’s unique blend of eerie ambiance, lively punk flair, and an avant-garde twist defies musical norms, drawing varied listeners into a collective embrace. Now, Voyvoda has announced the release of their new album, Autochthonous. This collection finds the Bulgarian band going back to their antiwar post-punk roots, hiding behind a Balkan barbed wire fence and spitting hate against crooked orthodox chieftains.

Their distinct blend marries Balkan and Orthodox melodies with a spectrum of post-punk, darkwave, and indie echoes. Their overall sound is reminiscent of Fugazi, The Stranglers, and The Damned as they dive deeply into the chaotic history of their native land.

Opening strong with Siromahomil, we hear the tale of a youth advised by their grandfather to learn from the Book of Daniel, emphasizing the importance of walking freely in the dark to find the light. The lyrics assertively reject external impositions on their history and nation, demanding oppressors retreat. There’s a strong sentiment against compromise and a quote disregarding a flag’s importance over freedom from oppressors. Next Voyvoda channels The Stranglers’ classic No More Heroes with the ominous No Spirit. The lyrics evoke nostalgia for past traditions and practices like Sirni Pokladi, burning witches, and jumping fires. It questions the disappearance or dilution of these traditions, suggesting they were disrupted by external forces or political influences. The repeated lines “No Future, No Zagovezni, No Zadushnitsa” emphasize a sense of loss and the absence of spirit, hinting at cultural erosion and spiritual void.

The video, directed by Klara Stoyanova and Kalina Filkova, depicts frolickers morosely dancing in an 80s club.

In the midst of dire scenarios—execution, bombings, and potential death—the lyrics of the heartbreaking Military Town #2 emphasize unwavering love and the memory of cherished times. Despite the bleakness, there’s a recurring reminder of affection for a significant other, described as a beacon of beauty in a grim setting. The ending quote emphasizes a hopeful outlook on global freedom and honors fighters for justice, suggesting the eventual triumph of the oppressed. The overarching message is about enduring love and hope, even in the face of oppression and adversity. Next, Excommunication juxtaposes violent acts with repeated disavowals of believing in violence, presenting a profound irony. The band touches on hypocrisy, with religious figures blessing instruments of brutality while appearing indifferent. The overarching theme underscores the dissonance between espoused values and actual behaviours.

The lyrics to Captain Hook convey a strong message of cultural protectionism and identity. Through evocative imagery, they highlight the significance of heritage, boundaries, and the consequences of cultural appropriation. There’s a palpable tension between honoring traditions and the perceived threat of external influences, notably symbolized by the repeated reference to “veto” and the curiously specific shoutout to New Order’s Peter Hook, suggesting a clash between indigenous and foreign elements in music and history.

The title song explores introspection, acceptance, and change, leading to a surrender to fate. The shift from “a slav” to “autochthonous” marks a change in identity towards native roots, while the repeated mention of “Death here is autochthonous” underscores inescapable truths. The Damned-esque Andronicus, sung in their native tongue, evokes a deep connection to ancestry and the transience of life. They express a yearning to connect with past generations and the landscapes they inhabited. The call to “turn off the lights” suggests a desire to embrace the intangible, while dancing on Šar Mountain symbolizes a union with ancestral spirits and nature. Finally, the folk-tinged dirge Mrs Misheva, sung in Bulgarian, depicts Mrs. Misheva’s individualistic defiance and detachment from societal expectations. Her repeated dancing in the store can symbolize non-conformity or protest in everyday spaces. Her disinterest in labels and skepticism towards the state may reflect broader Bulgarian sentiments of disillusionment with governance, reminiscent of the country’s protest culture against perceived political injustices.

Starting in Gainesville, Florida, VOYVODA now calls Sofia, Bulgaria, its home. With three albums and five EPs under their belt, they’ve toured much of Europe, rubbing shoulders with renowned underground dark and punk bands. Over time, Voyvoda has carved out a unique sound, blending Balkan and Orthodox influences with classic post-punk and darkwave vibes. Their talents also extend to creating music for films and documentaries.

Autochthonous was recorded in the Church of Noise studio and Krvavi Potok in Sofia and mixed in North Attic Studios. Limited to 110 copies, Autochthonous is now available for pre-order on vinyl from Ugly And Proud Records & Balkan Sprachbund.

Voyvoda has revisited history before in their fourth album, 2020’s Confessions of a Macedonian Bandit, which took a more experimental Balkan approach, based on the dark, spiritual and tumultuous history of the region of Macedonia. That collection summoned the spirit of American journalist/adventurer Albert Sonnichsen, who ended up in Macedonia at the beginning of the 20th century, seen through the words of the godfather of Balkan anarchism – Spiro Gulabchev.

Voyvoda is currently preparing to go on tour in Poland and Hungary. The band will officially present the album live for the first time in Warsaw on the 9th of November and in Krakow on the 11th of November and will tour the rest of Europe in the spring of 2024.

Die Thrash Metal-Band MEZZROW hat eine streng limitierte Auflage des Live-Albums “Keep It True – Live” angekündigt. Aufgezeichnet wurde das Konzert am 20. April 2023 auf dem KEEP IT TRUE-Festival. Bassist Conny Welén kommentiert:

“Für uns alle in der Band geht ein Kindheitstraum in Erfüllung! Jeder, der mit irgendeiner Form von Musik zu tun hat, möchte irgendwann in seiner Karriere ein Live-Album veröffentlichen. Jetzt werden wir es tun…dank unserer Plattenfirma und dem einzigartigen Keep It True-Festival.”

“Keep It True – Live” erschien am 27. Oktober 2023 auf Vinyl (schwarz/weiß marbled) via Fireflash Records. Limitiert ist die Platte auf 300 Stück und wird nur auf Konzerten der Band sowie bei ausgewählten Mailorder-Shops erhältlich sein. Zum Release veröffentlichte die Gruppe zudem den Mitschnitt “King Of The Infinite Void” bei YouTube.

MEZZROW verzeichnen einen Besetzungswechsel
Außerdem zählen MEZZROW ein neues Mitglied in ihren Reihen: Alvaro “Alvis” Svanerö ersetzt Jon Skäre hinter dem Schlagzeug. Der Drummer hat die Band aus Zeitgründen verlassen, wie die Formation erläutert:

“Aufgrund von Jon Skäres vollem Terminkalender und der Tatsache, dass er nicht die Zeit und Mühe in Mezzrow stecken kann, die er gerne hätte, hat er beschlossen, sich von der Band zu trennen. Im Juni hatten TRIUMPH OF DEATH die ersten Andeutungen gemacht – im Herbst folgte schließlich das Livealbum: “Resurrection Of The Flesh” erschien am 10. November 2023. Das Album wurde im Frühjahr 2023 beim HELL’S HEROES FESTIVAL in Houston, beim DARK EASTER METAL MEETING in München sowie beim SWR BARROSELAS METAL FEST in Portugal aufgenommen und von Tom Gabriel Warrior und V. It’s a well-established festival held in a fantastic location (Erfurt - Club from Hell) and boasts incredible line-ups, an amazing atmosphere, and a dedicated audience. This year’s line-up features renowned acts like CLOCK DVA, 2ND FACE, MILDREDA, BLAC KOLOR, KFACTOR, ATROPINE, INTERSTICE, WIDE DREAMS, OPPOSER D TERMINAL ST, and OSZYLAYTER. If you’re a fan of any of these bands, be sure to mark your calendars for November 4th-5th and treat yourself to a trip to Erfurt. To celebrate the upcoming festival, I had the opportunity to ask the organizers a few questions about the festival’s origins, its audience, and more.

FLOYA ist der Name des Projekts von Marv Wilder (ex-ALAZKA) und Phil Bayer (ex-TIME, THE VALUATOR), das musikalisch zwischen Emo-Rock, Weltmusik und elektronischen Elementen unterwegs ist. Jetzt gibt es den siebten gemeinsamen Track “Stay” bei YouTube.

Das Stück folgt auf die Songs “Willows”, “Florescent” und “Weaver”, die ebenfalls als Clip bei YouTube zur Verfügung stehen.

Ende Juni 2022 teilte man die dritte Single “Epiphany” mitsamt Videoclip bei YouTube. Auch den zweiten Song “The Hymn” hat man als Musikvideo bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Den Track kommentiert Phil Bayer:

„The Hymn handelt von Kompromissen und Loslassen, aber auch davon, mit diesen Konzepten Frieden zu schließen. Es gibt Zeiten, in denen Du erkennst, dass Du nicht alles haben kannst, was Du willst, also musst Du entscheiden, was Du verfolgen und was Du loslassen möchtest. Solche Dinge können manchmal ziemlich dramatisch sein, aber am Ende lehren mich diese Szenarien, was mir am wichtigsten ist.“

Erst Ende März 2022 hatte das Duo den Abschluss eines Plattenvertrags mit Arising Empire verkündet und zeitgleich die erste Single veröffentlicht: “Wonders” bei YouTube. Aufgenommen wurden die neuen Songs mit Produzent Chris Kempe, das Mastering übernahm Robin Schmidt.

Sänger Phil erklärt:

“Als ich 2018 die Musikindustrie verließ, wusste ich nicht wirklich, ob ich zu dem zurückkehren könnte, was ich am meisten liebte, ich musste sozusagen einen Traum loslassen. Als wir also FLOYA kreierten und anfingen, diesen Song zu schreiben, wollte ich, dass es um Positivität und die Ausdauer geht, überall im Leben anzukommen, wo man hin will. ‘Wonders’ ist unsere Hommage an all die Menschen da draußen, die jeden Tag kämpfen, egal unter welchen Umständen, ihre Träume zu leben. Pack es an und du wirst es schaffen.“

Anfang kommenden Jahres veröffentlichen LUCIFER ein neues Album: “V”, so der Titel, erscheint am 26. Januar 2024 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Mit einem Video zu ‘At The Mortuary’ hat die Band um Sängerin Johanna Platow Andersson jetzt eine weitere Single daraus geteilt.

Schon im Mai stellten LUCIFER den Track “A Coffin Has No Silver Lining (The Sistine Version)” vor.

Mit dem neuen Album kommen LUCIFER dann im Februar 2024 auf Tour, bei der “The Satanic Panic European Tour 2024”  spielen ANGEL WITCH neben LUCIFER als Co-Headliner. Als Support sind THE NIGHT ETERNAL dabei.

Die Black Metal-Band INFERNAL ANGELS hat nach dem Track “The Horizon Eats the Sun and Other Stars” und dem Video-Clip zu “Fire as Breath” mit “The Flame Burns Brighter in the Darkness” einen dritten Song ihres kommenden Albums “Shrine of Black Fire” veröffentlicht. Es ist das sechste Album der Italiener rund um Bandgründer und Sänger Massimo “XeS” Chiarelli (DEATHCVLT, INTUS MORTEM).

“Shrine of Black Fire” wurde von Christian “Acheron” D’Onofrio in den Atrocity Exhibition Studios produziert und wird am 24. November 2023 via Immortal Frost Productions erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Zizi Amri.

Mit der 7"-Single "Fairies Wear Boots" spendieren ZAKK SABBATH einen ersten Vorgeschmack auf ihren zweiten Longplayer, dessen Erscheinen für Anfang 2024 geplant ist.

Dieser amüsante Klassiker des Heavy Metal wurde ursprünglich im Jahr 1970 als letzter Track auf BLACK SABBATHs zweitem Album "Paranoid" veröffentlicht. ZAKK SABBATH sind aus purer Leidenschaft und Liebe zur Musik entstanden. Der Gitarrist, Sänger und Kopf von BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, Zakk Wylde, der sich auch als langjähriger Lead-Gitarrist bei OZZY OSBOURNE und nun auch noch PANTERA einen Namen machte, gründete die Band als Hommage an die „Erfinder“ des Heavy Metal: BLACK SABBATH.

Anfangs spielten ZAKK SABBATH zunächst nur Live-Shows in wechselnder Besetzung, bis im Jahr 2017 die 12"-EP "Live in Detroit" erschien. Vom 50. Jahrestag des selbstbetitelten Debütalbums von BLACK SABBATH inspiriert, das bezeichnenderweise am Freitag, dem 13. im Jahr 1970 veröffentlicht wurde, ging die mittlerweile stabile Besetzung mit Zakk sowie OZZY OSBOURNE und ROB ZOMBIE Bassist Blasko und Joey Castillo am Schlagzeug (DANZIG, QUEEN OF THE STONE AGE) ins Studio, um jenem Album einen angemessenen Tribut zu zollen, dessen Songs die Geschichte der Musik entscheidend beeinflusst hat. Ein Jahr später erschien das ZAKK SABBATH Debüt mit allen Songs des monumentalen BLACK SABBATH Meilensteins unter dem Titel "Vertigo" (2020), womit die Amerikaner auf das legendäre Label Vertigo Records des Vierers aus Birmingham anspielten. "Vertigo" wurde von Kritikern und Fans gleichermaßen mit Lob überschüttet. Der Erstling des Trios wurde zu einem globalen Erfolg, was durch beeindruckende Platzierungen in den Charts unterstrichen wurde: "Vertigo" kletterte auf Platz 5 in den US Hard Music Charts, wo es auch Platz 7 in den Current Rock Albums Charts und Platz 27 in den Billboard Top Albums Charts erreichte. Im Ausland kaperte die Tributscheibe sogar Platz 1 der Metal Alben Charts in Frankreich sowie Platz 3 der deutschen Album-Charts und den 9ten Rang der UK Top 40 Rock/Metal-Charts. Mit "Fairies Wear Boots" setzen ZAKK SABBATH der legendären Metal-Band aus Birmingham nun ein weiteres Denkmal. Fortsetzung folgt!

As a child blossoms into adolescence, an emotional chasm often emerges between mother and child. The youth’s burgeoning quest for independence and self-identity can clash with a mother’s protective instincts – or even vice versa. This evolving dynamic, laden with misunderstandings and yearning, encapsulates the bittersweet complexities of love and the inexorable passage of time.

Emerging dark wave/alt rock band <a href="https://www.instagram.com/swordtongue/">Sword Tongue</a> (Jennifer Wilde, Dan Milligan, and Gaetano Maleki) explores the pain of this universal dynamic from the point of view of the mother with To My Apparition, the first single from their third EP, Taming the Night Wolves.

The anguish of the evolution is palpable as the lyrics depict this painful emotional drift. As the daughter becomes unrecognizable, the mother struggles to maintain the connection. Blinded by external influences and deception, the once familiar bond deteriorates. Overwhelmed by anguish, guilt, and loss, there’s a reluctant acceptance of letting go.

“To My Apparition is a familiar yet tragic tale of coming to grips with the chasm growing between two people,” says the band. “The plaintive lyrics give voice to the anger, fear, and confusion – not knowing what is next or how to make things right. Filmed in the North Beach neighborhood, the video is part love letter to San Francisco, part 90s throwback, as a backdrop to an epic clash between a mother and daughter.”

The song is an intense lament, highlighting the pathos of mournful vocals and mesmerizing guitar tones married with hard hitting drum lines and dark, crunchy percussive textures that increase the intensity and urgency. The self-directed video illustrates this timeless tale with a straightforward narrative.

Sword Tongue partnered with accomplished drummer and producer Dan Milligan, known for his associations with members of notable bands like Ministry, Front 242, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Stabbing Westward, and KMFDM. Milligan’s discerning vision and expertise elevates Sword Tongue’s compositions, imbuing them with enhanced depth, vigor, and nuance.

In unison, Milligan, Maleki, and Wilde chart a fresh course as a collective, steering their musical expressions into a confluence of trip hop, industrial, and progressive rock, evoking hues of the 90s alternative era.

Die Deathcore / Blackened Death Metal-Band KNEEL BEFORE DEATH hat mit “I Am The One” eine neue Single veröffentlicht. Vor wenigen Monaten ist mit “Eternal Sleep” eine weitere Single der Finnen erschienen. Die Songs folgen auch die 2022er-EP “Memoir” nach, welche die dritte EP des 2013 gegründeten Quartetts ist.

Die Post Hardcore- / Alternative-Band HOLDING ABSENCE kommt im November 2023 auf Europatour, um ihr aktuelles Album “The Noble Art Of Self Destruction” live vorzustellen. Im Vorprogramm mit dabei sind THORNHILL sowie FLOYA (EU-Termine) bzw. DARK DIVINE (UK-Termine).

Mit “Hell on Earth” ist vor wenigen Tagen die neue EP der Death Metal-Band SULFURIC STORM erschienen. Es ist der erste Release des von dem in Brasilien geborenen und nun in Nürnberg lebenden Glauber Ataide (DENIAL OF DEATH) geleiteten Projekts.

“Hell on Earth” ist am 16. Oktober 2023 erschienen. Mit “Burn All Racists” gibt es nun ein Lyric-Video.

Chiffon Magnifique, an innovative post-punk/minimal wave outfit masterminded by Australian musician Jed A. Walters, promises to enchant music enthusiasts with the release of his latest single, Witches Falls. This track offers an intriguing glimpse into the shadow-laced world of the artist’s forthcoming debut album, Anxietika.

Witches Falls unfolds as a darkly captivating composition, luring listeners into the labyrinthine depths of Walters’ emotional terrain.  The result is a haunting blend of gradually-building drum machine beats, gritty plucked bass guitar, mournful lead guitar twangs, and Walters’ woeful reverb-drenched baritone. The song’s tone is accentuated by eerie soundscapes, created by Walters through ingenious techniques like reversing high-pitched guitar plucks.

The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the desolate Witches Falls walking track, located in Tamborine National Park, where the artist contemplated the haunting beauty of the surroundings. Walters muses on “jagged rocks and tangled trees,” cautioning against the ethereal sounds that drift in the wind, a nod to local legends that lend the Falls its eerie name.

“I wrote this one very quickly, after a fateful hike through a rainforest walk,” he says. “I was in a particularly poor state of mental health. My heart had been brutally broken, my social skills and self-confidence were at an all-time low, and hot anxiety was a part of every-day life. I chose to escape reality on my own at the Witches Falls walking track, located in Tamborine National Park. I found myself at the infamous lookout over the falls, thinking to myself ‘this would be a beautiful place to die.’ I guess, instead of acting on this thought, I walked out of that rainforest, drove home, picked up the guitar and wrote Witches Falls.”

The single is complemented by a visually arresting music video, self-directed by Walters and filmed by his compatriot Matt Power, which weaves a poignant tale of despair and introspection.  He poetically reincarnates as a previous version of himself, ensnared by forest Witch, (Isabelle Rickards), who eerily whispers from the shadows, guiding him towards inevitable decline. This elusive figure stands as an allegory for the tormenting inner voices that coax self-destruction amid sorrow. The narrative is further enriched with nods to both Stanley Kubrick and the “wicked” luminary of the silent era, vamp queen Theda Bara.

Witches Falls is a significant milestone in Chiffon Magnifique’s evolving discography, a follow-up to the impactful Abomination, Ice Witch, and Cyanide.

Recorded at Jed’s home studio,  the song is emblematic of Walters’ classic approach to production:“I treated the main beds of this mix as a real rock band – the drums I played in with my fingers, my bass, guitar, acoustic and synths all played in my myself” he says. “I experimented with making vocal drones by layering vowels and dragging them onto a sampler. I really like that kind of sampling like they did in the 80s. It had its limitations but they made these really weird sounds by twisting vocals up and down in pitch, becoming instruments themselves.”

Es macht einem schon Angst zu sehen, welche Alben immer neu bereits ihr soundsovieltes Jubiläum feiern. Da fühlt man sich selber echt alt! In Würde gealtert ist auch MÖTLEY CRÜEs zweites Album „Shout At The Devil“, welches nun als „Year Of The Devil“-Edition seinen 40er feiert. Hierzu wurde das Album wenig überraschend neu gemastered von Andy Pearce (u.a. BLACK SABBATH, MOTÖRHEAD, DEEP PURPLE). Man bekommt es als Vinyl, LP Replica CD, Lenticular CD, alles natürlich als Limited Edition und als Streaming/Download Deluxe Edition. Highlight ist sicher das Limited Edition Super Deluxe Box Set mit allerlei Goodies. Die Standardedition bringt ein paar Demos mit.

Fettes Boxset zum 40th Anniversary von MÖTLEY CRÜEs „Shout At The Devil“
Was soll man zum Album noch sagen, wo doch bereits der Kollege damals so passend hyperventiliert hat. Ein düsteres Intro für Freunde der Diablo-Reihe, dann schiebt uns der Titelsong mit reichlich Schwefelgestank und knackigem Groove direkt in die Hölle. Damals die punkig-dreckige Version des Glam Rock, heute schlichtweg teuflisch zeitlose Klassiker. Man tanzt sofort durchs Fegefeuer mit „Looks That Kill“, den treibenden „Bastard“ und erinnert sich, wie schmutzig man den BEATLES-Schinken „Helter Skelter“ spielen kann. „Red Hot“ kommt richtig feurig, die Single „Too Young To Fall In Love“ klingt gemäßigt nach MTV-Rotation.

MÖTLEY CRÜE mit super Musikern wären nicht MÖTLEY CRÜE
Dann ist der Klassiker-Rauch etwas verklungen, das stampfende „Knock ‘Em Dead, Kid“ und der Rest bieten keine Überraschungen mehr, bei „Danger“ versucht man es gar mit Anspruch und LED ZEPPELIN-Vocals, was nicht so recht klappt. Da ändert sich auch heute nichts, die wirklich großen Musiker waren MÖTLEY CRÜE nicht. Damals hatte man vor allem bei der Gitarre abgewunken, es gab zu viele wirklich herausragende Gitarristen, und es gab Mick Mars. Aus heutiger Sicht hätte ein Guitar Hero oder ein Sänger, der nicht krächzend nach dem Raben Rudi aus dem Trödelladen Siebenstein klingt, der Band den Dreck genommen, der sie von anderen Glamrockern abgehoben hat. Zudem haben sie mit ihrem diabolischen, düsteren Touch den Finger in die unter Haarspray und Make Up versteckten eiternden Wunden des (nicht nur) amerikanischen Mainstream gesteckt.

Damals die punkig-dreckige Version des Glam Rock, heute ist „Shout At The Devil“ ein zeitlose Klassiker
Damals alles richtig gemacht, heute genauso, der neue Sound hebt das Album nochmals eine Ecke höher als das Original auf LP mit seinem eher mumpfigen Sound. Die zahlreichen Re-Releases dazwischen kenne ich nicht. Hat man die, dann braucht man diese Neuauflage sicher nicht. Außer man ist MÖTLEY CRÜE Die Hard-Fan, dann kommt das fette Boxset wieder ins Spiel. Wer jedoch „Shout At The Devil“ aus unerklärlichen Gründen nicht hat, der muss jetzt nachrüsten. Wie schon Kollege Loffhagen sagte: Dieses Album gehört in JEDE (!!!!!!!) CD- oder Plattensammlung eines sich als „Heavy Metal-Fan“ bezeichnenden Musikkonsumenten.
