+ + + : The guitar play injects the true spirit to this work and still creates an hypnotic sensation during “A Muse (In Limbo)” and “Heloise”. The elevating effect of both songs is impressive, revealing the potential of the band. I also have to say a word about the powerful vocals injecting passion.

– – – : The main difficulty is to define and catch the sound of this formation. But on the other side it also says something about originality.

Conclusion: Ġenn sounds a bit out of the box and yet it has something recognizable.

Seit 1990 treibt das amerikanische Brutal Death Metal Quartett SUFFOCATION in New York sein Unwesen. Sie zählen zu den ersten, die dem herkömmlichen Todesmetall New Yorker Metalcore und Grindcore-Anleihen hinzugefügt haben, und der Erfolg gibt ihnen Recht. Nun steht mit “Hymns From The Apocrypha” ihr mittlerweile neuntes Studioalbum am Start.

SUFFOCATION servieren Death Metal mit einer Prise Hardcore & Grindcore
Gründungsmitglied und Frontmann Frank Mullen verließ nach gut 30 Jahren die Band, der neue Mann hinter dem Mikro heißt Ricky Myers. Das zwischen dem Vorgänger Album und “Hymns From Apocrypha” sechs lange Jahre liegen, das hängt nicht nur am Sängerwechsel, die Corona Pandemie hatte auch ein Wörtchen mit zu reden. Doch pünktlich zum 35 jährigen Bandbestehen knallen uns die New Yorker neun brandneue Tracks um die Ohren.

Was soll ich groß sagen? Mit dem Opener und Titelsong zugleich hämmern die Amis alles in Grund und Boden, und das auf höchstem technischen Niveau. Mosh-Parts gehören zur Grundausstattung der Musik. Die Singleauskoppellung “Perpetuak Deception” ist ein Kracher mit viel Potential nach oben und dem einen oder anderen Breakdown. Die eigentlich erste Single “Seraphim Enslavement” ist für SUFFOCATION Verhältnisse ein – zumindest gegen Ende hin – ziemlich verspieltes Stück geworden. Des Weiteren gibt die glasklare Produktion den Songs den letzten Schliff und kann sich hören lassen. Die Band hält ihren technischen Standard und legt sogar noch einen drauf.

Mit neuem Sänger auf zu neuen Ufern
Man braucht nur genauer hinhören, wenn Drummer Eric Marotti seine Schießbude bearbeitet – mit viel Liebe zum Detail und ultra präzise. Sänger Ricky Myers weiß durch seinen vielfältigen Gesang und vollen Einsatz auf ganzer Linie zu überzeugen. Die Nummern kommen Knüppeldick daher. Egal ob “Dim Veil Of Obscurity” oder “Immortal Execration”, hier wird auf höchster Ebene drauf los geballert, dass es nur so eine Freude ist. Einziger Kritikpunkt ist, das sich kein Lied aus der Masse abhebt. Diese Rolle kann noch am ehesten dem Opener zugeschrieben werden, aber es fehlt eben ein Smash Hit im Death Metal Gewand. Doch wenn diese Tatsache das einzige Manko ist, mach ich mir keine Sorgen um den Erfolg des Albums.

Fazit: SUFFOCATION knüpfen mit neuem Sänger dort an, wo sie beim letzten Album aufgehört haben. Und das ist gut so, hätte der neue Sänger doch ganz andere Vibes beifügen können. So bleibt die Band weiterhin bei der Speerspitze des Brutal Death Metals und steht für extremen, technisch versierten Metal.

Patrick Bobilin, a native to New York City’s bustling streets, has been at the helm of the electronic outfit <a href="https://mailtrack.io/trace/link/62fcd71e829a48171ff0fe241597117866ffbb2a?url=http%3A%2F%2Finstagram.com%2Fmidnight.choir.nyc&userId=614924&signature=e30c900551721e88">MIDNIGHTCHOIR</a>" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" target="_blank">https://mailtrack.io/trace/link/62fcd71e829a48171ff0fe241597117866ffbb2a?url=http%3A%2F%2Finstagram.com%2Fmidnight.choir.nyc&userId=614924&signature=e30c900551721e88">MIDNIGHTCHOIR</a> since 2014, in artistic tandem with Sarah Simon. Their latest EP, VERSION/SACRIFICE, elegantly dovetails with their previous work, Loverboy Molotov—released earlier this July—which artfully melded Bobilin’s penchant for classic goth and darkwave with the introspections drawn from his 2016 debut, THE CROWN.

VERSION/SACRIFICE is infused with the spirit of the punk, goth, and post-punk vibrations from the 70s and 80s. With Simon lending her vocals to two of the EP’s quintet of tracks, there’s an unmistakable evolution in their musical articulation. The duo seems to have gently distanced themselves from the intense darkwave rhythms of Loverboy Molotov, harkening back to the liberating, dance-inducing beats of their earlier compositions.

And now, this ensemble presents a modern, yet reverent, rendition of Spellbound by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Simon faithfully recreates the spark, down to the Bromley Contingent pronunciation of “entrance.”

“Spellbound is one of my favorite songs of all time,” says Patrick Bobilin. “I wanted to do it justice but I also wanted to grow as a band. Sarah and I worked through many takes, with her pushing away from her pitch-perfect tone and embracing the punk energy of her youth….I haven’t gotten to scream on a song since high school and Sarah hasn’t released the kind of rage she has on Spellbound on any record ever. We’ve already got a new record in the can, but on this, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through some spooky classics and maybe learn something on the way.”

Accompanying the single is a lyric video; a visual mosaic crafted by Bobilin himself, drawing upon cinematic masterpieces such as 1981’s Possession and 1968’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Further enriching the auditory palette, David Simutis (Err0r C0de) lends his guitar artistry, seamlessly integrating with Bobilin’s intricate sound designs. True to the spirit of the entire EP, the cover art elegantly intertwines touches reminiscent of old haunted mansions, cleverly juxtaposing playfulness with the more foreboding undertones of the tracks.



From the outset of the band’s journey, Bobilin’s path has been as eclectic as it has been impassioned. He ventured into the political arena, led notable community initiatives during the tumultuous social justice movements of 2020, and remained an unwavering pillar of community organization. Amidst the fervour of the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, Bobilin found himself detained on two occasions while orchestrating protests. These moments, including spirited debates with then-Mayor de Blasio concerning law enforcement aired over live radio, permeated the lyricism of the punk-laden darkwave album he so fervently put together in the nascent weeks of 2023.

Loverboy Molotov, their 2023 musical offering, bears the unmistakable imprint of Bobilin’s relentless vigor, reminiscent of his political forays in 2017, 2020, and 2022. While he had resolutely chosen to vacate the political stage, it did little to quell his inner fires. The album encapsulates his myriad frustrations, leading him toward a decidedly progressive perspective, with reflections spanning the emotional, societal, spiritual, and political spectra.

In addition to Spellbound, the rest of the covers in VERSION/SACRIFICE herald a departure, adopting a whimsical, yet self-aware demeanor. Sarah Simon’s vocals gracefully command the spotlight. Yet, Bobilin offers a nod to Danzig with his rendition of The Misfits’ Hybrid Moments, Samhain’s The Howl, and playfully tackles the work of Peter Steele with a brooding dance interpretation of Black No 1. Concluding the EP is a hauntingly psychedelic reinterpretation of their homage to Bauhaus’s Bela Lugosi’s Dead.

“Sarah and I wanted to do something fun and light to brighten our own spirits after the heavy content on Loverboy Molotov,” says Bobilin. “We also wanted to feature Sarah more prominently as less of a background player in MIDNIGHTCHOIR. We took the opportunity to grow stylistically and in our working relationship by taking some of these songs in a new direction.”

„Here’s to being human.”, lassen ANNISOKAY in der Lead-Single ihrer neuen EP “Abyss Pt I” (2023) verlauten; ein mahnender, leicht zynischer Zeigefinger in Richtung der Schattenseiten des Menschseins. Von derlei haben wir dieser Tage leider mehr als genug, wie allein ein flüchtiger Blick auf das weltpolitische Geschehen nahelegt. Warum also nicht für einen Abend dem Positiven die Zügel in die Hand drücken? Denn auch das gemeinsame Feiern könnte menschlicher kaum sein, insbesondere wenn der Anlass die Kreativität ins Zentrum rückt. Samt neuer Platte im Gepäck macht die deutsche Metalcore-Institution auf ihrer diesjährigen Headliner-Tournee auch im Münchner Backstage halt und hat – gemeinsam ist es bekanntlich doch viel schöner – mit FIXATION und TO KILL ACHILLES gleich zwei zusätzliche Ehrengäste geladen.

TO KILL ACHILLES

Dabei könnten Letztere nur im ersten Moment als Spaßbremsen missverstanden werden: Die Schotten zeigen sich inhaltlich so schonungslos offen wie verletzlich, wenn Frontmann Mark Tindal mit eindringlicher Stimme von Depression, Abhängigkeit oder häuslicher Gewalt erzählt. Dabei wechselt der Shouter je nach Stimmungslage zwischen aggressiven Shouts und packenden Spoken-Word-Passagen, die dank der feinfühligen instrumentalen Untermalung in Stücken wie „No Love Is A Crime” oder „The Cave“ unter die Haut gehen.

Schützenhilfe leistet dabei ab und an Drummer Kieran Smith, dessen Klargesang in „Chemical Counterpart“ und „Rats“ ein wenig Wärme in die oft bedrückenden Soundscapes trägt. Dabei müssen wir nachsehen, wenn solch starker Tobak zum Auftakt auch für das Münchner Publikum nicht immer leicht verdaulich ist: Es dauert ein wenig, bis man im Backstage Werk auftaut und im spritzigen „When The Lights Go Off“ den ersten kleinen Moshpit des Abends startet.

TO KILL ACHILLES tragen ihre Texte mit Authentizität und Leidenschaft vor

Dass zuvor selbst flotteres Material à la „No Love Is A Crime” oder“…And I’m An Addict“ mehr bewusst aufgesogen denn ungezügelt ausgelebt wurde, liegt wohl in gleichen Teilen an den noch spürbaren Strapazen des langen Arbeitstages sowie der ernsten Grundstimmung, die hier und da schon nachdenklich stimmt. Mit viel Engagement ziehen TO KILL ACHILLES die Halle aber innerhalb einer halben Stunde doch auf ihre Seite, wobei uns an diesem Mittwochabend die atmosphärischen und introspektiven Tracks jedoch noch mehr ergreifen als die straightere, hardcore-beeinflusste Schiene.

Schade sind dagegen die Entscheidung, mit dem abschließenden „Venom“ lediglich einen einzigen Titel des starken Debüts „Something To Remember Me By“ (2021) zum Besten zu geben, sowie der Umstand, die Lead-Gitarre komplett vom Band laufen zu lassen. Dafür leben TO KILL ACHILLES ihre berührenden Botschaften auch auf der Bühne mit Authentizität und Leidenschaft vor: Das Mikrofon liegt schon lange auf dem Boden, als Sänger Mark sich für die letzten Zeilen des Schlusstracks noch einmal die Seele aus dem Leib schreit – nur um kurz darauf selbst für ein paar Augenblicke erschöpft auf den Brettern zusammenzusacken.

Wie beim Opener dreht sich die Live-Performance auch bei FIXATION in erster Linie um ihren Frontmann: Hier ist es allerdings die exzentrische und ausdrucksstarke Körpersprache Jonas W Hansens, welche die Blicke des Backstage auf sich zieht. Während der Sänger zwischen den Stücken zurückhaltend und mit sympathischem Lächeln zu den Münchner:innen spricht, untermalt er seine leidenschaftliche Darbietung ansonsten mit einem ordentlichen Maß an Melodramatik. Ob Hansen nun über die Bühne fegt, in „Bloodline“ einen kurzen Abstecher in den Fotograben wagt oder nahezu unablässig den Blickkontakt zu den Fans in den vorderen Reihen sucht: Die Rolle im Rampenlicht scheint für den Norweger wie geschaffen.

Ihren modernen Alternative Metal präsentieren FIXATION darüber hinaus zugleich kraftvoll wie einfühlsam, wobei uns Arrangements und Melodielinien hin und wieder an die softe Seite der Schweden von IMMINENCE denken lässt. Härtere Ausbrüche bleiben die absolute Ausnahme, wobei die bayerische Landeshauptstadt im geradlinigen „Violent Tendencies“ trotzdem gerne die eigenen Leiber ineinander wirft.

Der detailverliebte Sound FIXATIONs kommt in München gut an

Doch selbst abseits des Pits scheint die Menge durchaus angetan vom detailverliebten und transparent abgemischten Sound der vier Musiker: Wird in „Neurosis“ noch höflich mitgeklatscht, scheint das hiesige Werk zum Ende der 40-minütigen Show schließlich auf Betriebstemperatur. Den mitunter entrückten Schlussakt „What We Have Done“ entlohnt die Menge schlussendlich jedenfalls mit wertschätzendem Beifall, auch ohne die Halle zuvor auf den Kopf gestellt zu haben.

ANNISOKAY

Um das zu tun, müssen ANNISOKAY wiederum noch nicht einmal die Bühne betreten: Nachdem uns während des arg langen Changeovers bereits eine Auswahl zeitgenössischer Chart-Stürmerinnen das latente Pop-Faible der Formation nähergebracht hatte, zeigt das gut gelaunte Backstage zu Taylor Swifts „Shake It Off“ im Gegenzug, dass auch zu radiotauglichen Hits gemosht werden kann. Die folgenden Zugabe-Rufe bleiben zwar unerfüllt, mit der Alternative nimmt man in München aber natürlich ausgesprochen gerne vorlieb.

Die düsteren Synth-Soundscapes des Intros „Into The Abyss” schüren die Erwartungshaltung im Backstage, bevor mit der einsetzenden Rock-Besetzung unter Stroboskop-Licht auch die Silhouetten der vier Musiker wie von Geisterhand auf der Bühne erscheinen. Inszeniert ist dieser Auftakt jedenfalls fantastisch und trägt seinen Teil dazu bei, dass schon im anschließenden „Throne Of The Sunset“ alle Dämme brechen.

ANNISOKAY versetzen das Münchner Backstage in den Ausnahmezustand

Mit bisweilen glasklarem Sound und einem stimmigen Setdesign, dessen vier mannshohe LED-Tafeln samt abwechslungsreicher visueller Untermalungen hin und wieder auch bei fehlender Textsicherheit nachhelfen, schnüren ANNISOKAY ein Gesamtpaket, das umgehend mitzureißen weiß. Das beobachten wir auch in der gestuften Arena, wo der Pit schon früh rund zwei Drittel des Innenraums vereinnahmt und nur dann temporär an Intensität verliert, wenn Shouter Rudi Schwarzer die Meute in „What’s Wrong“ zum Mitspringen auffordert.

Natürlich ist es nicht das erste Mal, dass wir die bayerische Landeshauptstadt im Ausnahmezustand erleben, eine Selbstverständlichkeit ist eine derartige Hingabe der eigenen Fanbase aber nicht. Egal, ob im zurückgenommenen „Bonfire Of The Millennials“ nun lauthals mitgesungen wird oder sich der Innenraum in „Fully Automatic“ plötzlich rudernd auf dem Hosenboden wiederfindet, eine Verschnaufpause gönnt sich in der gut gefüllten Location augenscheinlich niemand. Auch und nicht zuletzt zum Leidwesen der Security, möchten wir meinen, denn die Menge an Crowdsurfern, die im Graben vor der Bühne heruntergepickt werden muss, dürfte bis zum Ende des Konzerts im mittleren zweistelligen Bereich gelegen haben.

An ANNISOKAY selbst geht dieser Wahnsinn natürlich nicht unbemerkt vorüber, weshalb Gitarrist und Sänger Christoph Wieczorek das bewährte „Good Stories“ kurzerhand den Münchner:innen widmet, die dort ebenso großen Einsatz zeigen wie beim inbrünstig mitgesungenen LINKIN PARK-Cover „One Step Closer“. Dort wagt Kollege Rudi Schwarzer höchstpersönlich einen Abstecher in die Menge, um seinen Anteil zu leisten: Immerhin zeigte die Zuschauerschaft zuvor in „Human“ erst eine stattliche Wall of Death, um dann in „Friend Or Enemy“ geschlossen aus der Hocke zu springen. Klare Sache also, dass der Headliner seinerseits nicht einfach nur routiniert sein Set runterzocken kann.

Zwischen Handylichtern in “The Tragedy“ und dem Circle Pit im folgenden „Unaware“ wären ANNISOKAY wohl auch damit davongekommen. Nur ist die Balance aus poppigen Melodien und brachialen Metalcore-Breitseiten im Live-Format ohnehin viel zu aufrüttelnd, um allein teilnahmslos die Pflicht zu erfüllen. Deshalb legt die Formation zum Ende hin mit „Coma Blue“ nochmal eine Schippe drauf, bevor sie die Bretter zumindest zeitweilig räumt. Oben drauf gibt es mit dem Pop-Cover „Calamity“ und dem starken „STFU“ zwei weitere Tracks aktuelleren Datums, für die Band wie Publikum – entgegen des Titels des Closers – stimmlich nochmal alles in die Waagschale werfen.

Die enge Bindung zwischen ANNISOKAY und ihren Fans ist deutlich zu spüren

Wir nehmen uns diese vier Buchstaben dagegen auf dem Weg zur S-Bahn-Haltestelle tatsächlich für ein paar Minuten zu Herzen: Denn kurzzeitig sprachlos darf man nach dieser Darbietung durchaus sein. Insbesondere das Wechselspiel zwischen ANNISOKAY und ihrer passionierten Anhängerschaft ist lebendiger Ausdruck einer engen Bindung, die sich über viele Jahre hinweg formen konnte. „Here’s to being human.“, heißt es eigentlich leicht zynisch in der düsteren Lead-Single der „Abyss Pt I“-EP, an deren Ende wir nur noch Grabsteine unter der Sonne vorfinden. Ein unausweichliches Schicksal, auf das wir zusteuern? Das gelebte Miteinander an diesem Abend lässt zumindest ein wenig Resthoffnung, dass selbst ANNISOKAY den Glauben an ein versöhnliches Ende noch nicht ganz verloren haben.

OCTAVIAN WINTERS wurde 2022, während des dritten Winters der Pandemie, in der geisterhaften Isolation von San Francisco geboren. Stephan Salit (Gitarre), Randy Gzebb (Schlagzeug), Jay Denton (Bass) und Ria Aursjoen (Gesang, Keyboards) verweben ihren viszeralen und ätherischen Sound zu einer ganz eigenen Textur – von Geschichten, die einst erzählt wurden und an die man sich nur halb erinnert, in einer Dämmerung aus Schatten und Sternen, in einer verlassenen Stadt unter dem Wintermond.

Ihre sphärischen Soundstrukturen variieren zwischen Dark Wave, Heavenly Voices und verspieltem Ethereal Wave und garnieren die dunkle Torte mit reichlich Shoegaze-Anleihen. Der Opener „Ondine“ beginnt mit Meeresrauschen und einer latent gothrockigen Rhythmik. Nach kurzer Zeit wird aber sowohl die Geschwindigkeit als auch die Instrumentierung runtergefahren und eine betörende Elegie zieht in das Fundament, welches dann von der wunderbaren weiblichen Stimme getragen wird. Schwermütig, dennoch voller eleganter Schönheit schleicht der Song dann voran.

„undertow“ ist vom Gesamtkonzept etwas heftiger arrangiert, die Saiten sind verzerrt und dringen vehement in die romantische Harmonie. Zwischen Heftigkeit und wohlklingender Verstörung sind die Elemente detailliert zusammengefügt. Ruhig und voller Wehmut erklingt das getragene „surreal“. „Velveteen“ ist dagegen rockig inszeniert und der Gesang wird dunkler. Die Atmosphäre ist dicht und öffnet in der Hookline dezent das Tor zum Pop. Düster und latent phobisch folgt „Nebula“, bei dem sich Sängerin Ria Aursjoen (die neben dem Mikrofon auch die Tasten am Keyboard bedient) in verführerische Höhen begibt.

Fazit: Ein dunkles Gebräu aus verschiedensten dunklen Stilen. Das Klanggeflecht klingt wie eine verschwörerische Melange aus pulsierenden Bass-Grooves, Shoegaze-Saiten, ästhetischer Romantik und einem wunderschönen Gesang, der sich berührend in die Gehörgänge schleicht. Produziert von William Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate, Faith and the Muse, Christian Death, The March Violets). Im Gesamtbild die perfekte Mischung für Fans von Clan of Xymox und Cocteau Twins.

Januar 2024 via Innerstrength Records erscheinen. Produziert wurde das Album von Zac Orhen in den Sharkbite Studios Oakland, während das Cover-Artwork von Riaj Gragoth stammt.

Mit “Innervoid” ist gerade das neue Album der Progressive Metal-Band ELDRITCH erschienen. Es ist das 13. Album der Italiener aus der Toskana. Nach “Elegy Of Lust” gibt es mit “Black Bedlam” nun einen weiteren Video-Clip.

Erneut gelingt es Bernd Jung eine Legende in die ostwestfälische Provinz zu holen. Eine lange Tour mit meist ausverkauften Konzerten macht in Bielefeld ihre vorletzte Station, bevor im legendären Freiburger Cräsh das Finale läuft. Eigentlich müsste ich traditionsgerecht die Fahrt in den Breisgau auf mich nehmen, konnte ich doch 1990 eines der besten Konzerte deutschen Dark Rocks bewundern … Pink turns Blue gaben sich die Ehre und Love like blood war dabei. Über Fahrt, Übernachtung, Konzert und Erlebnisse würden Precht und Lanz sämtliche Podcasts der Republik füllen. Aber nun sind sie am Freitag hier, also PTB. Kommen, genießen, feiern (Party ist danach auch).

ISLA OLA
Des Abends Rundung /despektierlich Vorband genannt) liefert das Minimal Wave Duo ISLA OLA, die am besten von Bruits De La Cave beschrieben wurden:
Isla Ola zu beschreiben ist nicht so einfach, der fesselnde Gesang und die hervorragend arrangierten Songs erinnern an vieles, aber auch an nichts. Wenn man voreingenommen ist, fallen Erklärungen schwer und viel zu nüchtern aus. Eine kühle Ästhetik und die Verbindung unterschiedlicher Musikstile von Elektronik, Postpunk und Coldwave, schaffen ein eigenes beeindruckendes Bild.

PINK TURNS BLUE
Ein allgemeines Qualitätsmerkmal für Bands ist die Zeitlosigkeit, ein persönliches Qualitätsmerkmal ist die Tatsache, dass ich noch weiß, wo ich die erste LP kaufte und dass ich seitdem diese Band und vor allem diese Platte nie aus den Ohren verlor. Es ist „if two worlds kiss“. Ich kann mich noch erinnern, als diese Musik beim Vorglühen nie fehlen durfte, man machte sich danach etwas glücklicher, etwas verträumter auf den Weg in die einschlägigen Düsterschuppen der Republik. Der Song, der dem Debüt den Namen gab, ist auch fast 40 Jahre fester Bestandteil des Sets, wie viele andere Songs dieses Meisterwerks. Dann, vor zwei Jahren gelingt der Band mit „Tainted“ ein wahrer Geniestreich, der sich irgendwo zwischen Neuerfindung und Tradition ein gemütliches zuhause suchte. Damaliges Fazit: Ein wundervolles Album. Perfekte Umsetzung der Thematik. Versehen mit den typischem PTB Sound, der melancholisch, dunkel, teils hoffnungslos die Gefühlswelten des Hörers mit jeder Faser tief berührt. Durchdachte, eloquente Texte mit Sinn und Verstand, ohne je in Phrasen oder Parolen zu versinken. Musikalisch ist ihr Post Punk das Verbindungsstück zwischen Tradition und Moderne. Diese ganz besondere, PTB eigene Art, die Musik eher detailliert als opulent auszustaffieren und trotzdem mit betörenden, dunklen Melodien zu glänzen, ist erneut grandios gelungen. Man darf sich auf ein intensives, tiefdüsteres, erhaben-
melancholisches Konzert freuen.

DAS MOVIE
Für ohne-Auto-kommende ist das Movie perfekt gelegen, gelangt man doch quasi direkt aus dem Zug in den Laden. Das Ambiente ist diesem Event angemessen, neben den Konzerthallen-Innereien, gibt es einen kleinen Kneipenbereich, der zum verweilen einlädt (natürlich nicht während der Auftritte). Hinweis: Letzte günstige Nahverkehrsalternative ins Ruhrgebiet ist um 00.07 Uhr (davor 22.59 Uhr). Die entgegengesetzte Richtung wird um 23.27 Uhr letztmals bedient. Wer sich trunken den schönen Klängen der Party hingeben möchte, findet (Zug-)Verbindungen ab 4.00 Uhr.

Die Heavy Metal-Band IGNITED hat nach den Videos zu “Bloody Satisfied“, “Uncontrollable” und zum Titeltrack mit “At The Damned’s Hall” ein AI-generiertes Video ihres neuen Albums “Cradle of the Wicked” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Steelbound” (2019) das zweite Album der brasilianischen Band, die inzwischen nach Schweden umgezogen ist.

“Cradle of the Wicked” wurde von Fredrik Nordström (DREAM EVIL) im Studio Fredman produziert und ist am 27. Oktober 2023 erschienen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Gustavo Sazes.

IGNITED sind Sänger Denis Lima, Gitarrist Dalton Castro, Bassist Martin Bellucci und Drummer Maurício Velasco.

Die Doom / Sludge Metal-Band MEDICINE HORSE hat mit “Dead Medicine” einen Video-Clip ihres neuen und selbstbetitelten Albums veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus dem Native-Gebiet Tulsa in Oklahoma.

“Medicine Horse” wurde von Ryan Harvey gemixt und von Ryan Foster gemastert. Das Cover Artwork stammt von Jacob Rachal. Erschienen ist das Album am 8. September 2023 via Horton Records.

Die Death Metal-Band DRIPPING DECAY hat mit “Ripping Remains” eine neue EP angekündigt. Sie Scheibe folgt auf das jüngst erschienene Debütalbum “Festering Grotesqueries” nach und wird am 26. Januar 2024 via Satanik Royalty Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es das HALLOWEEN-Cover “Trick Or Treat” zu hören.

“Ripping Remains” wurde gemeinsam mit Derek Leisy in den Falcon Studios in Portland aufgenommen und gemixt und von Dan Lowndes gemastert.

Unter dem Motto “Unliving Pictour Show 2024” spielt man Konzerte in Villingen-Schwenningen, Köln, Braunschweig, Oberhausen, Wilhelmshaven, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Markneukirchen, Wiener Neustadt (A), Pratteln (CH), Memmingen, München, Innsbruck (A), Mannheim, Regensburg-Obertraubling, Leipzig und Wien (A).

Die australische Dark Wave-Band um Chris Carter bringt mal wieder etwas Ordnung in ihre Diskografie, aber wer bei der Masse von verschiedensten Neuauflagen, Single-Compilation und Demo-Sammlungen noch durchsieht, ist wirklich gut informiert. „Destroying The Vampire“ fasst jetzt auf zwei CDs die EP „Psychic Vampires“, die Single „I Never Wanted You“ und das Album Destroying The World To Save It“ aus den Jahren 2004/05“ zusammen. Dabei fehlen allerdings der ANGELSPIT-Remix (verzichtbar) und das DEATH IN JUNE-Cover „Come Before Christ And Murder Love“ (schade), allerdings die eigentlich im gleichen Zeitraum veröffentlichten EPs „Rome“ und „Without Shadows“ berücksichtigt man gleich gar nicht mit? Man wird sich dabei aber schon was gedacht haben und viel wichtiger ist ja, das jetzt das fünfte IKON-Album „Destroying The World To Save It“ erstmals seit 23 Jahren wieder erhältlich ist. Mit diesem gingen IKON nämlich etwas aus der Dark Wave/Neo Folk-Ecke heraus und integrierten schärfere Post Punk-Elemente in ihrem Sound, welche der Band jedoch sehr gut zu Gesicht standen! Das vier Jahre später folgende „Love, Hate & Sorrow“-Album setzte dann noch einen drauf und machte plötzlich recht schnittig INTERPOL oder den EDITORS Konkurrenz. Die beiden im Vorfeld ausgekoppelten Singles „A Line On A Dark Day“ und „Amongst The Runes“ sind ganz großartige Songs mit einprägsamen Hooklines, welche auch heute noch sehr frisch klingen. Trotzdem schafften es IKON auf diesen beiden Alben, ihre bewährten Merkmale zwischen Dark Wave und Neo Folk weiter zu bewahren. Diese Mischung machen die Australier aber vielleicht auch gerade so einzigartig! Die zweite CD bei „Love, Hate & Sorrow“ enthält dann die gesammelten B-Seiten der Singles, wie es zu beiden Alben jeweils unveröffentlichtes Material oben drauf gibt. Beide Wiederveröffentlichungen sind daher auf jeden Fall lohnenswert, ein neues Album wäre allerdings ebenso mal wieder wünschenswert. (Marco Fiebag)

The foundation for “Glysisvallur” was laid within a research project known as The Frozen Atlantis. After finding artistic satisfaction in the initial compositions, Bards of Skaði resolved to travel deeper into the realms of musical antiquity, blending baroque intricacies, modal melodies, and archaic instruments to evoke an atmosphere reminiscent of civilisations long past.

On strings, guitars, lute, lyre, keys, and programming, we find Thomas von Wachenfeldt, who – apart from being a PhD and Associate Professor in Sound and Music Production at Dalarna University – has arranged music for symphony orchestras and death metal legends like Entombed. Göran Månsson, flutes and percussion, is a seasoned educator at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and has graced the international stages in a variety of styles ranging from classical ensembles to popular outfits like Gjallarhorn, Nordman, and Sarek.

Through “Glysisvallur”, Bards of Skaði extend an open invitation to an environment where music theory meets primal emotion, offering a lush and layered experience that captures the imagination and stirs the soul. Die Death Metal / Grindcore-Band DEFECT DESIGNER hat mit “Chitin” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Wax” (2009) und “Ageing Accelerator” (2015) das dritte Album des norwegischen Trios, welches aus Eyvind W. Axelsen (DISKORD), Eugene Ryabchenko (FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE) und Martin Storm-Olsen (Ex-TROLLFEST).

“Chitin”, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Ian Miller (u.a. für ULTHAR tätig) aufwartet, wird in absehbarer Zeit via Transcending Obscurity Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach “To Ziggurat” mit “We Will Need Your Chitin” nun auch eine zweite Single zu hören.

APPALOOZA sind geschickte Geschichtenerzähler und Komponisten. Das macht ihr aktuelles Album “The Shining Son” deutlich, welches thematisch an das Vorgängeralbum “The Holy Of Holies” anschließt und den tradierten Fokus auf Religion und Verderben legt. Musikalisch wird der Bogen von Heavy über Stoner Rock bis hin zum Grunge gespannt, wobei man sich an KYUSS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, aber auch ALICE IN CHAINS und SOUNDGARDEN (zurück) erinnert wähnt – ein Zeitalter, als auch “Pulp Fiction” im Kino lief, dessen Soundtrack auch nicht ganz an der französischen Band vorbeigegangen sein mag.

Die Riffs auf “The Shining Son” sind groovy
Denn ein wesentliches Merkmal von APPALOOZA sind die treffsicheren Riffs von Sylvain. Zwar hat man spätenstens bei “Wasted Land” das Gefühl, als würden sie sich ob ihrer Ähnlichkeit wiederholen, doch tut dies dem Gefallen keinen Abbruch, weil sie einfach so groovy sind. Aber auch der Gesang des Gitarristen aka “Wild Horse” kann überzeugen, als dass er Mainstream-tauglichen Clean-Gesang mit angerautem und gar hohem Geschrei (“Unbreakable”) zu vermischen vermag.

APPALOOZA punkten mit vitalem Drumming
Besondere Erwähnung sollte zudem das vitale Drumming von Vincent finden. Mit dem Tribal-Feeling, welches im starken Opener “Pelican” und im etwas dunkler angehauchten “Sunburn” besonders zur Geltung kommt, arbeiten APPALOOZA eine weitere Facette ein, die den Wiedererkennbarkeitswert der Band erhöht. Coole Rock-Musik also, die den Fuß nicht ruhen lässt.

CLAUDIA KURVER ist schon eine Weile unterwegs. Die Frau aus Halle tanzte im Karnevalverein, hatte ihre Metal-Band in Leipzig mit MENTAL DEFECT, mit Liss Eulenherz wurde Claudia als Dark-Synth-Pop Duo SONORUS 7 bekannt. In Lockdown-Zeiten kam ein „wo will ich hin“, es sollte ihr ganz eigenes Ding werden. Und in deutsch sollte es sein. Die Jungs dazu waren schnell gefunden, Freund Jan an der Gitarre, Basser Fox von MENTAL DEFECT, Drummer Tom und später Ehemann Daniel an der zweiten Gitarre. Mit der Selbsteinschätzung „BON JOVI trifft auf CHRISTINA STÜRMER – Hardrock-Attitüden treffen auf deutsche Popmusik“ beschreibt man sehr gut, was uns das Album mit dem passendem Titel „Leichtmetall“ bietet.

Man braucht nicht lange, um beim Opener „Wo ist die Zeit“ und auch später mal an CHRISTINA STÜRMER zu denken, wenn die Österreicherin härter rocken würde. Deutsch-Poprockige Melodien, die Gitarren nehmen alles mit, Metalriffs, Alternative-Tunes, auch BRIAN ADAMS läuft sicher gern mal im Autoradio. Im Vordergrund steht natürlich Sängerin Claudia. Sie überzeugt mit cooler, angenehmer Stimme fern vom Trällergesang. Man hört, dass sie sich in diesem Sound wohl fühlt, sie drückt auch mal nach vorn wie beim energischen „Einfach nur ne Nacht“. Wieder folgt deutscher Pop-Rock, der nicht vergisst, auch mal hardrockig nach vorn zu treiben. Beim catchy daherkommenden „Lebenselexier“ muss man aufpassen, nicht den Refrain zu BON JOVIs „It´s My Life“ anzustimmen.

Unterhaltsam geschmiedetes „Leichtmetall“ für Freunde des rockigen Deutsch-Pop
Man hört CLAUDIA KURVER gern zu, der angenehmen Stimme, den persönlichen Texten. Man hört, dass sie und ihre Jungs aus ganz unterschiedlichen musikalischen Ecken kommen, was für genug Akzente im Hintergrund sorgt. Auf die fast zu erwartende Herzschmerz-Ballade wird verzichtet, sogar auf das Klischee, die attraktive Sängerin als Eyecatcher aufs Frontcover zu packen. Hier soll die Musik im Vordergrund stehen, das hört und glaubt man.

Freunde des rockigen Deutsch-Pop gemixt mit 80/90er Hard Rock und einem Hauch Alternative Rock werden ihre Freude haben an CLAUDIA KURVER´s unterhaltsamen „Leichtmetall“. Echte Metalheads werden abwinken mit „Schlagerkram“ für dem Metal-Fernsehgarten. Aber mal ganz ehrlich, den haben wir doch alle mehr oder weniger heimlich selbst geschaut.

One might imagine their latest offering, with subtle undercurrents of Irish folk melodies, Shadow, as the anachronistic backdrop to a timeless Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights, securing the shutters of his home against the tempests, all while haunted by Cathy’s spectral presence.

Ocana’s contemplative and gradual style with the music of Forest Cirlces feels invigourating, while simultaneously evoking the musical sentiments of the late 80s to early 90s.

Shadow‘s poignant, plaintive lyrics express a profound sense of loss and the emotional toll of a deteriorating relationship. The singer grapples with feelings of regret, longing, and the painful realization of their diminishing significance in the other’s life. Themes of sacrifice, seeking understanding, and the impermanence of human connections are poignantly explored.

The visual accompaniment for Shadow showcases Forest Circles’ affinity for the abstract, allowing the music to breathe and convey its essence independently. The video captivates with rhythmic, glitch-infused geometric patterns dancing amidst the void, suggesting transmissions from a distant dimension — perhaps reminiscent of spectral manifestations of Cathy herself.

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band NAIL WITHIN hat einen Vertrag mit Massacre Records abgeschlossen und unter dem neuen Label gleich ihre Comeback-Platte angekündigt: “Sound Of Demise” erscheint am 17. November 2023, wurde von Alex Shuster produziert und enthält elf Tracks. Das Mastering übernahm Maor Appelbaum. Reinhören ist jetzt nach der Single “Eyes Of Evil” bei YouTube nun auch mit dem Lyric-Video zu “Years Of Madness” möglich. Dabei handle es sich um einen Tribute-Song für L.G Petrov (ENTOMBED) mit einem Gitarren-Solo von Eric Peterson (TESTAMENT).

Da ich persönlich seit mehr als 35 Jahren Teil der Szene bin, bin ich mit den klassischen Veröffentlichungen des Labels aufgewachsen, wie den 90er King Diamond Alben, Atrocity, Fates Warning, den frühen Crematory, Skyclad und natürlich den Klassikern wie Pretty Maids, Wargasm, Baphomet und Solitude Aeturnus.

Ich erinnere mich noch an das Jahr 1994, als ich ein Demotape meiner ersten Band Betrayer an verschiedene Labels in Europa schickte und Thomas von Massacre der erste war, der mir einen Brief zurückschickte und antwortete, so dass wir froh sind, nach 30 Jahren einen Kreis zu schließen und eine gemeinsame Reise zu beginnen, von der ich sicher bin, dass sie erfolgreich sein wird!”

Mit “Phantasmagoria” wird in wenigen Tagen das neue Album der Hard Rock / Grunge-Band BLACK DAGGERS erscheinen. Es ist das erste Album der Kanadier.

“Das Album folgt einem Protagonisten, der eigentlich niemand und jeder ist. Die Figur geht einen Pakt mit dem Teufel ein, der schnell schief geht, während er sein Leben aus den Fugen geraten sieht. Das Album handelt sowohl vom Kampf mit den Lastern als auch vom Umgang mit Depression und Sucht”, erklärt Sänger Valentine Vandal.

“Phantasmagoria” wurde von Martin Merenyi gemixt und gemastert und wird am 31. Oktober 2023 via Papercuts on Purpose erscheinen.

In the wake of numerous home-produced offerings, the Portland-based ensemble, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/hoveringshrikes">Hovering Shrikes</a>, heralds the advent of their latest single, Things Go Missing. Initially conceived as a brooding folk composition by the group’s principal vocalist and wordsmith, Ryan Wilson, more than ten years prior, the track underwent a transformative reimagining at the hands of lead guitarist and music architect, Casey Frantum, resulting in a richly textured, filmic auditory experience. Bringing to mind Electric Six, Tuxedomoon, Danny Elfman and the Doors alike, this psychedelic offering is brimming with emotion and bursting passion.

Things Go Missing delves into the reverberations of a harrowing metamorphosis and its profound effect on an observer.

The narrative takes place in the heart of Dakota’s vast landscape, two souls navigate memories, distance, and unspoken traumas. While one recalls a harrowing waterborne encounter with an unseen entity, evoking feelings of dread and vulnerability – the other grapples with lingering emotional ties and the weight of absence. This poignant narrative confronts love, loss, and unsettling moments of introspection amid desolate backdrops and haunting reminiscences.

Wilson drew from a real-life initiation rite in Wilson’s hometown, where individuals were hurled off a pier as ritualistic sacrifices, the narrative reflects that while all emerged from the waters, some found themselves irrevocably altered.

The composition epitomizes the quintessence of Hovering Shrikes’ craft: richly woven, evocative lyrics paired with powerful, compelling instrumentals. Gentle guitar strains gradually cede to subtle yet determined percussion, setting the stage for an expanse of otherworldly synth and bass, all culminating in Wilson’s dramatic vocal crescendos that echo over an intricately layered, spectral, and propulsive musical landscape.

The composition heralds the inaugural recording with an expanded ensemble, featuring Dan Duncan, formerly on drums, now on bass, and Jared Bozza holding the rhythm on drums. In May, the collective dedicated a duo of days to honing their craft at the esteemed Jackpot! Recording Studio, under the deft guidance of engineer Adam Lee. Die Power Metal-Band DRACONICON hat nach “Heresy” und “Thorns” mit “Theatre of Sorrow” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Pestilence” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Dark Side of Magic” (2021) das zweite Album der Italiener und beschäftigt sich mit psychischer Instabilität, Schmerz und Traurigkeit, die stark von der jüngsten Pandemie beeinflusst sind.

“Pestilence” wurde von Marco Mastrobuono und Alessandro Mammola gemixt und gemastert, während das Cover-Artwork ein weiteres Mal von Dan Goldsworthy stammt. Erscheinen wird das Album am 17. November 2023 via Inner Wound Recordings.

Die Noise Punk / Hardcore-Band MUSCLE VEST hat mit “Don’t Dream” ein Lyric-Video ihrer neuen Compilation “Threeeps” veröffentlicht.

Zuvor hat die Band mit “Glue Trap” einen Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

“Der Song wurde durch ein Ereignis inspiriert, das unser Sänger Dave Rogers leider selbst erlebt hat”, erklärt die Band. “Die erschreckende Entdeckung einer Leimfalle, die von einem Vormieter aufgestellt und unbeaufsichtigt unter einem Küchenschrank zurückgelassen wurde, fasst die Erfahrung eines Mietverhältnisses in Großbritannien perfekt zusammen.”

“Threeeps” umfasst die drei bisher erschienenen EPs der Briten sowie zwei neue Tracks. Erscheinen wird die Scheibe am 24. November 2023 via Prank Monkey Records.

Sage und schreibe zum achten Mal stehen THE ROLLING STONES an der Spitze der deutschen Charts. Diesmal mit “Hackney Diamonds”, der 24. Studioplatte der Rock-Legenden. Dagegen müssen selbst BLINK-182 zurückstecken: Die Pop-Punk-Ikonen schaffen es nach ihrer Reunion im Original-Line-up mit “One More Time…” aber immerhin auf Platz zwei. Dass WITHIN TEMPTATION gegen derartige Schwergewichte keine Chance haben, verwundert nicht. Nach der Spitzenposition für “Resist” (2019, #1) landet mit “Bleed Out” die erste Scheibe in Eigenregie aber auf einem achtbaren fünften Platz.

Nach oben geht es derweil für die deutsche Rock-Band ENGST, die sich mit “Irgendwas ist immer” auf der 14 festsetzen – zuvor erreichte “Schöne neue Welt” im Jahr 2020 noch die 20. Konstanz beweisen kurz dahinter RIVAL SONS, die nach “Darkfighter” (2023, #15) im Juni nun das Pendant “Lightbringer” nachlegen und bis auf Platz 17 klettern. New York City’s <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thevioletmine">The Violet Mine</a> stands as a harmonious pairing of Meredith Minogue (vocalist, composer, and guitarist) and Jim Barry (composer and guitarist). Their forthcoming album, White Night, slated for a February 2024 release, was crafted under the discerning expertise of Reed Black, known for his collaborations with luminaries such as Karen O and Vampire Weekend. This compilation boasts ten tracks, seamlessly weaving together elements of folk-rock, distinctive guitar melodies, enveloping synth work, and deeply personal lyrical content.

The avant-folk Phantom Pain, the first offering from the album, delves deep into the profound sentiments of parting ways and the melancholy that accompanies the end of significant chapters in our lives; capturing the essence of a universal human experience with a timeless dark folk approach. The song is reminiscent of those introspective moments when we stand at the precipice of change, looking back at what was, while simultaneously facing the vast uncertainty of what lies ahead. It evokes the bittersweetness of memories shared with someone pivotal to our existence, encapsulating both the comfort of the familiar and the daunting nature of the unfamiliar.

Phantom Pain stands strong as a metaphorical journey; one that traverses the emotional landscapes of nostalgia, pain, acceptance, and ultimately, moving forward. The reference to “taking a last look around” encapsulates the human need to acknowledge, process, and come to terms with past experiences before embarking on new adventures, making the forlorn tune a deeply relatable and reflective piece. We hear shades of PJ Harvey, Jenny Lewis, Aimee Mann, Beth Orton, Cowboy Junkies, Sinead O’Connor in their haunting sound.

The spectral video, showcasing apparitions within an enigmatic historic residence, comes under the artful direction of renowned photographer <a href="http://merricyr.com">Merri Cyr.</a> Notably, Cyr’s portfolio boasts iconic imagery for a plethora of artists, among which stands the memorable Grace album cover for Jeff Buckley. This visual narrative was captured at Westport Historical Society’s Handy House in Massachusetts, a structure with origins tracing back to the early 18th century.

The Violet Mine’s sound draws from rock and roll, 70’s singer-songwriters, new wave, and dream pop. They have recorded two full length albums, We Both Know It’s Out There and The Last Cathedral, both of which were produced/engineered by Adam Lasus (Helium, Clem Snide, PJ Harvey, Yo La Tengo). In addition to Minogue and Barry’s talents, The Violet Mine also features Skip Ward on bass, Rob Draghi on drums and percussion, and Joe McGinty on keyboards.

Meredith Minogue is the co-creator of Fair Play, a concert series sponsored by City Winery that benefits the Bronx Immigration Partnership. Over the course of two shows Violet performed alongside artists including Chris Difford (Squeeze), Tracy Bonham, Richard Barone,  Robben Ford, David Poe, Trixie Whitley, and Annie Minogue Band. Violet has appeared on CD compilations created by Magnet Magazine, Pop Culture Press and Jarmusic’s Coast to Coast, which included tracks by the Cowboy Junkies and Ani DiFranco. The band has played The Loft at City Winery, Rockwood Music Hall, Webster Hall, Knitting Factory and CMJ. 

The Violet Mine’s forthcoming album, White Night, is a collection of ten songs that includes flashes of contemporary folk-rock mingling with guitar riffs, swirling synthesizers, and intimate lyrics. It will be released on February 16, 2024.
