Welcome to the new Ripple series, Beneath the Desert Floor, in which the label uncovers lost treasures and gems from the early days of stoner/desert/doom rock. These are albums that may have been lost to time, perhaps never got the opportunity for vinyl pressings and didn't have the benefit of digital presence and social media. Kicking things off are The Awesome Machine, a classic hard rock/metal band from Sweden formed in 1996. After recording their self-titled 10" and the cult demo Doom, Disco, Dope, Death and Love, they secured a contract with german label "People Like You" for first album "...It's Ugly or nothing." The record was produced by King Diamond guitarist Andy La Rocque and is the perfect way to launch Ripple's time-traveling new series to rediscover this lost classic of heavy riffing goodness!

Mit “Anything To Offer?” wird in wenigen Tagen das neue Album der Blues / Hard Rock-Band PROUD OUTSIDERS erscheinen. Das neue Album des spanischen Duos, welches aus Sänger und Gitarrist Sergio Puertas sowie Bassist Carlos Mendez besteht, wird am 11. November 2023 via Epictronic Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es ein Video zu “Stick To My Guns“. Zu sehen gibt es auch eine Besonderheit der Band. Sergio Puertas spielt mit der linken Hand auf einer rechtshändigen Gitarre, und zwar völlig verkehrt herum, ohne die Gitarre neu zu bespannen.

Headcrash, Hamburg, Germany 3rd November 2023 Peter Heppner’s TanzZwang Vol.2 Since the successful collaboration with SCHILLER and two hits ‘Dream Of You’ and ‘Leben... I Feel You’, it has become clear: PETER HEPPNER’s unique voice is suitable not only for melancholic songs, but also harmonizes perfectly with Electro and Dance Pop music. So, it was only a matter of time before Heppner released their own album in this “Tanzzwang” style, namely in a double package with the current album ‘Confessions & Doubts’. And since dance sounds work best in a club, that’s exactly what this project is for! In addition to keyboardist Dirk Riegner, the evening’s guests also included two local DJs, who provided an atmospheric setting for PETER HEPPNER’s performance.

In “Die Schöpfung”, Kramm explores themes of creation and perception through the lens of a machine recognizing humanity as its creator. This story, unique in its German narration, resonates with the motifs of “Der Achte Tag” from the Das Ich album “Antichrist”, linking his literary work to his musical legacy.

Die Avantgarde Black Metal-Band VOID hat nach “Self Isolation” mit “Iniquitous Owl” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Jadjow” veröffentlicht. Es ist das vierte Album der Briten und wird am 7. Dezember 2023 via Brucia Records erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt im Übrigen von der ehemaligen Sängerin Laura Katrin Weston.

Joshua Paul Davis alias DJ SHADOW ist eine Legende und hat 1996 mit seinem Debüt-Album „Endtroducing…“ einen Klassiker des instrumentalen Experimental Hip Hop-Genres geschaffen. Dieses Album bestand zu 100% komplett aus Fremdsamples und DJ Shadow mixte daraus einen völlig neuen aufregenden wie atmosphärischen Sound. Durch „Endtroducing…“ wurden Legionen von Musikern beeinflusst und ebenso war DJ SHADOW 1998 an dem nicht weniger einflussreichen „Psyence Fiction“-Opus von U.N.K.L.E. beteiligt, welches u.a. stolpernde Hip Hop-Rhythmen mit Brit-Pop-Vocals verband und solch unfassbar großartige Gast-Kollaborationen mit Ian Brown (THE STONE ROSES), Richard Ashcroft (THE VERVE) und Thom Yorke (RADIOHEAD) enthielt. 1999 trennten sich jedoch die Wege von DJ SHADOW und dem Label Mo Wax wieder, wie seine folgende Alben dann mit reichlich Gastvokals und insbesondere von Rappern dominiert wurden. Beim letzten Doppel-Album „Our Pathetic Age“ gab es jedoch erstmals wieder einen komplett instrumentalen Part und „Action Adventure“ setzt diesen Back To The Roots-Weg jetzt konsequent fort. Die 14 neuen Tracks verzichten völlig auf Gast-Vokalisten und basieren nur aus Samples seiner riesengroßen Plattensammlung. So zu sagen aus alt mach neu und nachhaltiger geht es ja kaum! Eine weitere wichtige Quelle des „Action Adventures“ ist eine Kiste mit rund 200 Radio-Tapes, welche DJ SHADOW bei Ebay ersteigert hat und diese in Kombination mit seinen Rhythm & Loops faszinierend homogen verschmelzen lässt. Zwischen Hip Hop, Drum’n Bass, R&B, Trip Hop und Ambient streift DJ SHADOW diesmal wieder fast alle Genre, in denen er seit jeher wildert und sogar KRAFTWERK klingen dabei durch. Am Ende entstand daraus ein mal leichtfüßiger, wie mitunter meist schwer groovender Score mit unheilvoll Atmosphären und sogar einigen 80er Jahre Reminiszenzen – ein richtiges „Action Adventure“ eben halt. REIN made her initial mark on our collective consciousness with the highly-praised debut album REINCARNATED back in 2020. Now, she returns with her second full-length release, GOD IS A WOMAN, set to drop on November 30th.

GOD IS A WOMAN inhabits a unique realm. The entire album takes listeners on a profound journey of self-discovery, drawing inspiration from influential figures such as Missy Elliot, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Fever Ray, and Kraftwerk. As is customary in her oeuvre, this composition finds its creative roots in both the disquieting contemporary world and REIN’s personal experiences. It is a work driven by a playful engagement with biblical imagery, doubling as a heartfelt ode to her own capacity for unyielding love, even when faced with the possibility of heartbreak.

The genesis of this project can be traced back to REIN’s encounter with Lennart Nilsson’s poignant photographs from the renowned book, A Child Is Born. Reflecting on those images from her youth, she envisioned the foetus suspended in a celestial void, contemplating the possibility that a deity could indeed be a woman.

“I have always been fascinated by how powerful women are, that we can create life inside of our bodies,” she says. “I am also fascinated by history and religion. Like why have we as women been so oppressed for such a long time and still is to this day? I still can’t understand why. We should be the leaders of this world.”

This collaboration seamlessly melds the distinctive styles of both artists, yielding a composition that is both shadowy and enigmatic, simultaneously possessing elements of beauty and the macabre. Within their artistic underworld, darkness converges with the divine.

Suzi Sabotage, renowned as a Finnish songstress who effortlessly fuses dark coldwave with synthpunk, crafts an ethereal yet danceable auditory landscape, occasionally embellished with the haunting strains of the Finnish kantele.

“Suzi Sabotage was my first choice to join us in this song,” gushes Caitlin Stokes of Corlyx. “I love her powerful iconic energy, and she brought some fresh ideas to the song. We had a blast making the music video together, front women rarely collaborate, and I think we need to see more of this…our unique beauty in harmony is powerful and enchanting.”

“It’s been an unforgettable, wonderfully berserk experience to collaborate with Corlyx, especially flying over to Italy to film the music video with them,” Suzi Sabotage recalls. “I handpicked the song myself out of different alternatives because it immediately took my breath away, sounding like a modern darkwave classic. Auf die dunkle Seite des Metals ziehen NIGHT CROWNED den Hörer auch auf ihrem neuen Album „Tales“. Die acht Stücke strotzen nur so vor Energie in Form von melodischem Black/Death Metal und präsentieren sich als passender Nachfolger zu den bisherigen zwei Alben. NIGHT CROWNED besteht aus ehemaligen und aktuellen Mitgliedern von bekannten Bands wie Dark Funeral, Nightrage und Cipher System.

Gleich der Opener „De Namnlösa“ (feat. Jens Ryden) zeigt die Stärken der Band. Finstere Atmosphäre gepaart mit schnellen und aggressiven Black/Death Metal Melodien, dabei gleichzeitig erhaben und mächtig. Ja, auch Keyboard ist in verschiedenen Ausprägungen bis hin zu orchestralen Arrangements vorhanden und gibt der Musik die entsprechende Würze. Gesanglich ist man auch sehr vielseitig und passend zur Musik unterwegs. Von aggressives und leicht keifend bis zum erhabenen Klargesang ist ein breites Spektrum vorhanden.

Mit „Tales“ schlagen NIGHT CROWNED ein weiteres dunkles Kapitel auf. Die Texte sind sowohl auf Englisch als auch auf Schwedisch, und Jonathan Thorpenbergs Mixing-Fähigkeiten bringen den Sound der Band voll zur Geltung, während Jani Stefanovics Mastering dafür sorgt, dass jede Note mit Präzision getroffen wird.

Mit den acht Stücken kann man wunderbar in die düstere Welt der Schweden eintauchen. Neben dem bereits erwähnten Opener ist „Flickan Som Foersvann“ als weiterer Track sofort ins Ohr gegangen. Die anderen Stücke wachsen zudem mit jedem Durchlauf, sodass „Tales“ ein weiteres richtig gutes Album von NIGHT CROWNED geworden ist. Alle veröffentlichten Alben sind von echt guter Qualtät, da lohnt es sich, nicht in das aktuelle Werk, sondern auch in die Vorgänger reinzuhören, sofern ihr sie noch nicht kennt. (eller)

Bitterkeit und kein Ende. Der Verfasser spürt sie häufig in sich wachsen und es ist unglaublich wertvoll, ein Ventil zu haben, wenn die Bitterkeit wieder einmal Überhand nimmt. Da kommt diese Formation gerade zur richtigen Zeit: END passen gut zum Lebensgefühl der 2020er, denn „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ ist das Hardcore-Gegenstück zum nihilistischen Black Metal. Die US-Band fährt eine ganz andere Qualität in Sachen Intensität und Brutalität auf, als das Genre üblicherweise hören lässt.

Gitarrist, Produzent und Initiator Will Putney (FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY) zeigt hier mehr als nur seine Liebe zum metallischen Hardcore, das Songwriting ist trotz der klassischen Riffs viel zu gewitzt, die Performance ist durchzogen von Leidenschaft, das Genre ist viel zu eng für END. Kurz, END sind eine brandgefährliche, bis an die Zähne bewaffnete Band, die sowohl ungefilterte Wut als auch intelligente Songs bietet. In einer halben Stunde sprengt „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ die eigene Szene und wildert in weiten Bereichen brutaler Musik. Dabei schaffen END das Kunststück, dass „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ wie aus einem Guss klingt und auch trotz einzelner Experimente stets das Aggressionslevel in schwindelerregenden Höhen hält.

Diversität und Intensität: END fokussieren sich auf „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ auf Aggression statt auf die Genrezugehörigkeit.
Die Diversität von „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ ist bemerkenswert. Im Grunde ihres Herzens sind sie eine metallische Hardcore-Band vom Schlage HARMS WAY, aber bei Weitem weniger stumpf. Elektronische Elemente, Grind und CONVERGE-Chaos („Embodiment Of Grief“) erweitern die stilistische Palette von END erheblich. Ein Song wie „Thaw“ wird durch die Samples noch gefährlicher, die Breakdowns wirken, weil sie nicht ausgereizt werden, umso brutaler. In Sachen Performance befinden sich END dabei am äußersten Punkt der Intensitätsskala, wie der irrwitzige Breakdown am Ende von „Leper“ illustriert. „Worthless Is The Lamb“ überquert mehr als nur einmal die Grenze zum Grind und „Hollow Urn“ baut mit Loops, Drones und elektronischen Beats eine Menge Spannung auf.

Sänger Brendan Murphy (COUNTERPARTS) brüllt vergleichsweise eintönig, aber derart inbrünstig und übersteuert, dass die Hörer:innen Angst um ihr Leben bekämen, stünden sie ihm gegenüber. Das Drumming von Matt Gugliemo (THE ACACIA STRAIN) ist überraschend komplex, vor allem im Hinblick auf seine Hauptband – schwere Grooves beherrscht er mit traumwandlerischer Sicherheit, aber auch komplexe und chaotische Figuren funktionieren. Mit Dylan Walker (FULL OF HELL) und J.R. Hayes (PIG DESTROYER) sind zwei prominente Gastsänger zu hören, die ihr Charisma den Songs schenken, ohne zu sich sehr in den Vordergrund zu drängen. HERIOTs Debbie Gough liefert allerdings die beste und krasseste Gastperformance, einmal mit düsterem Klargesang, einmal mit äußerst fiesem Geschrei und macht „Thaw“ zum besten der zehn Tracks.

END schaffen den Spagat aus Eingängigkeit und Experimentierfreudigkeit: „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ wird so zu einem ganzheitlichen Album.
Auf gewisse Art und Weise ist „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ ein eingängiges Album, da die Songs auf den Punkt geschrieben und gespielt sind und selbst in den chaotischen Momenten eine klare Linie erkennbar ist. Dieses Niveau ist den meisten anderen Bands im Genre deutlich überlegen. Ob „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ nun besser ist als das deutlich grindigere und straightere „Splinters From An Ever-Changing Face“ wird die Zeit zeigen, das Niveau des Debüts hält dieses aber Zweitwerk locker. „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ wirkt nicht wie eine beliebige Sammlung von Songs, die irgendein Nebenprojekt ausgeschissen hat, es ist immens kraftvoll und für die Verhältnisse des Genres überdurchschnittlich kreativ. END sprengen die Grenzen des Hardcore und erschaffen ein bitteres Album, das den Finger in die Wunde legt. Soll die Menschheit doch zum Teufel gehen – „The Sin Of Human Frailty“ reißt schon mal die Höllentore auf.

LORD OF THE LOST legen ihren Fans ein Album mit Coversongs unter den Weihnachtsbaum: “Weapons Of Mass Seduction” erscheint am 29. Dezember 2023 über Napalm Records.

Mit einem Musikvideo zu „Shock To The System” stellen LORD OF THE LOST jetzt den ersten Song daraus vor, im Original ist der Song von BILLY IDOL.

LORD OF THE LOST-Sänger Chris Harmserklärt, was ihn an der BILLY IDOL-Nummer fasziniert:

„Ich erinnere mich noch genau, als ich diesen Song das erste Mal hörte. Ich war 13 Jahre alt, es war Sommer und ich saß auf der Rückbank des Opel Manta Cabrios, in dem ich mit meiner älteren Schwester und ihrem Freund zum Freibad fuhr. Selten hat mich die Energie eines einzelnen Songs so gepackt. Ein kleines Stück dieser Energie möchten wir gern mit unserem Tribut an Billy Idol und diesen Song durch unser Cover und das dazugehörige Video zurückgeben.“

Die Idee, ein Coveralbum aufznehmen, kam bereits beim dem letzten Album “Blood & Glitter” auf:

„Bereits während der Produktion von unserem letzten Album Blood & Glitter wurde während der Studiozeit in Finnland, bei den Aufnahmen zu unserem ROXETTE-Cover ‚The Look‘, klar, dass wir hier die Büchse der Pandora geöffnet hatten. Die Energie und der Spaß am Covern von Songs geliebter und respektierter Kollegen und Vorbilder war etwas, dass wir unbedingt weiterführen wollten. So haben wir noch vor der Veröffentlichung von Blood & Glitter angefangen, an dem Projekt ‚Cover-Album‘ zu arbeiten, was für uns das perfekte Dessert zu Blood & Glitter darstellt, bevor wir uns in das Abenteuer stürzen, uns für ein eigenes neues Album erneut selbst zu erfinden.”

“Weapons Of Mass Seduction” wird in verschiedenen Formaten erhältlich sein. Einige enthalten eine zweite CD mit elf Coversongs, die von der Band bereits veröffentlicht oder live gespielt wurden. (Photo by Olivia Van Der Will) The Berlin-based darkwave act Night Nail has just released a new single, “Fates Explained”, which is also the title song of the band’s new album out November 17 on Metropolis Records. A video for the title track is also out now, you can check it below.

Lyrically, the song paints a picture of frontman Brandon Roberts’ relocation from Los Angeles to Berlin: “Our move to Berlin had an impact on the themes of anger and frustration directly expressed in the lyrics for this song,” states frontman Brandon Robert. “I could not have written this and some of our other new songs against the backdrop of LA, which has something unique about it that limits you from exploring those scarier places inside yourself. Berlin can be harsh, cold and predictable, lending itself to anger, frustration and resentment, but in that can be a creative liberation.”

New Night Nail album on Metropolis Records

Night Nail recently signed to Metropolis Records to release what will be their third album. “Fates Explained” has been mixed, mastered and co-produced by Pete Burns of Kill Shelter, with additional instrumentation provided by Valentina Veil (VV & the Void), Ilija Gavrilenko and Justin Deactivere.

Background/Info: German formation Milicent was founded in 2022 by Valerio Kuhl (ex-XTR Human), Simone Mayer and Janey Schumacher. “Myrsky” is the band’s debut album featuring eight songs -the CD format featuring three extra cuts.

Content: This band is driven by good-old 80s dark-Wave influences featuring guitar play reminding me of The Cure. Guitar and electronics have been mixed as a perfect match; guitar to inject a dark spirit to the work and electronics to make it all more melodic. On top of the composition you’ll discover heavenly, powerful, female vocals by Simone Mayer. One of the most surprising cuts is the adaptation of the French popular song “A La Claire Fontaine”. The bonus tracks from the CD are alternative edits of 3 album songs.

+ + + : The sound and influences aren’t innovating but I like the result. There’s a perfect balance between guitar and electronics while the vocals inject an extra dimension to the work. There’s an artistic touch emerging at the surface created by sound treatments reminding me of violin. Some parts have been driven by harder, menacing, bass lines while other cuts are moving into dreamy sensation. So the work stands for diversity with graceful vocals on top. Next to the female vocals you’ll also notice male vocals accentuating the diversity.

– – – : The work is missing a true hit while I also notice a very few cuts which are less inspired.

Conclusion: Milicent has released a graceful and promising debut album mixing Dark-Wave together with Ethereal.

Best songs: “Cosmic Joke”, “Unhappy”, “Helsinki”.

This is the most diversified work of Shedir which seduced me by the Film-Noir like “Deer Fluent In Wind” -featuring saxophonist Guido Tabone but also by the intimate “A Time Gone Out Of My Mind” which is a great last track.

– – – : Hard to say if this is the best Shedir production in time but I still got the feeling this artist has more potential than what comes out in her works. The best is maybe yet to come… who knows!?

The Story of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/eva_losangeles/">EVA Los Angeles,</a> a gothic dance-pop outfit that conjures a sound reminiscent of Suede, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Pet Shop Boys, The Cramps, and more,  is a riveting odyssey with many serpentine twists and turns. It began, as things often do, at a quaint Christian Dance Party in 1991 amidst the serene backdrop of Irvine’s Mariners Church. Here, a casual remark on a Dead Kennedys t-shirt sparked a connection between EFC and J-Rad, a connection that would go on to sculpt the very essence of what would later become Eva. Amidst the echoes of an Orgy song, the band Eva emerged in 2001, symbolizing a male-fronted ensemble enveloped in a feminine aura. The lore further unfolds in the electric nights at Gay Del, where the energy of electroclash mingled with the raw echoes of punk, forging an unspoken manifesto that steered clear of darkness, instead, embracing a fashionable identity that resonated through the Value Village DC thrift finds and a unique OC washed hairstyle. The duo, flaunting a reimagined John Squire guitar sound and crystalline dream-witch vocals, embarked on a whimsical journey, envisaging Suede B-side covers as their initial motif.

The summer of 2001 saw the infusion of J-Rad’s Tascam 8-track minidisc and a Fender Jazzmaster, a cue for a shift towards original compositions that encapsulated the spirit of Eva. The unanticipated arrival of original tracks like ‘GoGo,’ ‘Outside Girl,’ ‘Red Ferrari’ and ‘New Violence’ emanated an avant-garde aura, transcending the traditional analogue essence as they reverberated from Agoura Hills to Oceanside over a payphone. The entourage soon expanded, with MycoJesus and Subtraktor joining the fray, the latter injecting a fresh dose of synth magic into the ensemble. This concoction of electroclash with britpop/goth guitars, molded with a touch of trip-hop beats, embodied a genre-defying aesthetic that set Eva apart in the indie-sleaze carousel of the time. The journey through studio recordings, label interests, and a fair share of musical evolutions, though laden with hurdles, kept the essence of Eva resilient, culminating in a distinct sound that captivated the goth and electronic dance spheres alike.

At a serendipitous gathering at the Patriarchy show at the Levitt Pavilion on July 22nd, 2022, J-Rad’s fortuitous meeting with postmodernfamilyrobinson unveiled a new chapter in Eva’s narrative. This encounter, immersed in humor and music, led to a creative collaboration that saw the birth of the ‘Eva gals.’

The rendezvous also paved the way for an acquaintance with photographer Alexander Raborn, igniting a fresh spark in Eva’s visual realm. The ensuing ‘Vegan Mafia’ video, shot at the GOGO LOUNGE, mirrored a live performance infused with the vintage aesthetics of Bahooka Tiki Bar, 1981, with an essence of Mick Jagger’s charisma from Performance leading the charge. This portrayal, a vivid reflection of Eva’s live gig aura, intertwined with a dash of 1981’s deathrock allure, encapsulated the essence of Eva, hinting at a crystallized body of music and art on the horizon, patiently awaiting its dawn amidst the echoes of past, present, and future reverberations.

On creating the song “Vegan Mafia,” the band explains: The idea sonically was if Christian Death, Bauhaus, The Cramps, and Wesley Willis were stuck in line at the DMV.. what could possibly go wrong? For the video, the idea was to simulate a live performance at Bahooka Tiki Bar in 1981 with Mick Jagger from Performance leading the charge.

While editing the video of “Vegan Mafia”, J-Rad found inspiration from a tarot reading that was conducted during the assembly process. As a result, he recorded a version of Orgy’s song ‘Fiction’ in the style of Bauhaus’s ‘Silent Hedges’ or something off Swans’ album ‘Children of God.’

On recording the cover of “Fiction (Dreams in Digital),” he explains: – Orgy are fucking sick! I like them so much that I had Amir Derakh mix this track. The video was supposed to be an updated version of George Michael’s Freedom ‘90 video but ended up being something else entirely.

Exploring the darker, more relentless side of electronic music, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vivanonmusic/">Viva Non</a> has unveiled a new track titled “Cruel Threat.” This piece is a brooding amalgamation of industrial and EBM-infused techno that commands attention with its rhythmic noise and penetrating techno beats. It’s a track that doesn’t just play; it invades the space with its intense, reflective cadence, perfect for the avant-garde underground vibe operating within the cavernous halls of Berlin’s Atonal festival.

The mastermind behind Viva Non, James Hofer, provides insight into the creative process, stating, “With this track, I set out to create something intense and meditative. Potentially capturing or speaking to a collective, omnipresent anxiety.” Hofer’s experimental approach, distorting synths to emulate the raw edge of guitars, has culminated in a soundscape that’s both cinematic and perturbing, echoing the chaos of a sci-fi dystopia.

The project’s evolution in 2022 saw it embrace EBM and Techno, leading to acclaimed performances at various festivals across Canada.

Before immersing himself in the world of electronic and EBM, Hofer contributed to metallic hardcore bands, showcasing his musical versatility. Since its inception in 2016, Viva Non has ventured through post-punk and synth-pop, with its debut album ‘Pure’ making it onto the Polaris Prize (Canada) long list. (Photo by Dina Marie Robinson) The San Francisco post-punk outfit Octavian Winters presents their new video for “Velveteen”, lifted from their debut 5-track EP “The Line or Curve”, recently released via Stratis Capta Records. In the lead up to the EP, the band released the singles “Undertow”, “Ondine” and “Surreal”.

Randy Gzebb explains the tone of this song: “Racing down a gloomy freeway on a grey evening, you walk up an alleyway and duck into a smokey casino, filled with like-minded people, an intense air of anticipation building as everyone gets ready to turn themselves loose, their insecurities, anxieties filled with emotions with driving drums and bass with serrated guitars, desperate vocals playing in the background.”

“We had just started working up the music for what would become Velveteen in the summer of 2022 and I was out in Vegas for a few days. I had driven out into the desert, musing on inspiration for lyrics, and was on my way back into the city when the signs for the casinos, shows and strip clubs started popping up. The idea for the lyrics coalesced then — there was an air of desperation in all the lights and billboards, a false lure to feel… good. To indulge in fantasy. The lyrics are about people trying to claim their dreams through escape, by avenues that lead down a rabbit hole of despair,” says Ria (Amenti) Aursjoen.

The new material was recorded in San Francisco by Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto, Consolidated) at OW Studio and Room 5 Recording. Produced by Octavian Winters and William Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate, Faith and the Muse, Christian Death, The March Violets) the EP was mixed and mastered at 13 Studio in Chicago.

About Octavian Winters

Formed in San Francisco in 2022 the band draws from darkwave and post-punk traditions. Octavian Winters is guitarist Stephan Salit (Thrill of The Pull), drummer Randy Gzebb (Thrill of The Pull, Love Club,), bassist Jay Denton and Ria (Amenti) Aursjoen on vocals and keyboards.

“The Line or Curve” EP is out everywhere, including via Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. The band plays Sacramento’s Cafe Colonial (with Ashes Fallen) on November 8.

This New York City mainstay, a mammoth talent in production and musicianship, operates from a clandestine studio, encircled by a veritable arsenal of 1980s synthesizers, producing dance-pop jewels that resonate with both the flamboyant and the introspective.

His most recent offering, the wistful Riding In The Rain (via Chicago’s Feeltrip Records), mines the auditory stylings of Italo-disco and pays homage to seminal ’80s groups such as The Cars, Pet Shop Boys, and Depeche Mode, employing beloved instruments like the Korg M1 and the Juno-106 to forge arresting melodies and vibrant bass lines. The end product is a dance-inducing symphony, rich in harmony, that conjures a world tinged with the sweet pangs of romance and a wistful undercurrent.

Although nostalgic and light sounding, the narrative of the lyrics punches you square in the gut. Navigating his hometown’s transformed streets, a man grapples with a deep sense of alienation and despair in the wake of a departure. Familiar places now seem distant, tinged with sorrow. He rides under relentless rain, confronting the pain and change, haunted by memories and a future irrevocably altered.

“Riding In The Rain is about loss and heartbreak, about feeling like an outsider in your own hometown, and the sense of feeling trapped as the world changes around you,” says Stone. “As I was writing this song, I was thinking about movies such as Taxi Driver, Say Anything. There is a vivid section of Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance where the narrator (Phaedrus) describes riding his motorcycle straight into a torrential downpour. This imagery was on my mind when writing this song.”

(For the uninitiated, Robert M. Pirsig’s 1974 novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a profound tale that weaves together a cross-country motorcycle trip with philosophical discussions. It explores the metaphysical concepts of quality and examines life’s complexities through the lens of a father-son relationship, all while presenting a modern take on the ancient Greek philosophy.)

The music video for Riding In The Rain, a visual narrative lensed and orchestrated by Rosa Luna, plumbs the depths of heartbreak and the accompanying sensation of stasis amidst the relentless march of change. Rendered in a palette of saturated technicolor, the video invites viewers into Ronnie Stone’s reimagined nocturnal Manhattan, its streets awash in the seedy glow of neon reminiscent of the 1970s. You’re in the driver’s seat now.

Ride Again stands as the Stone’s zenith of ten years, steeped in the penumbral corners of nightclubs and the raw energy of warehouse soirées. In the nascent stages of 2022, Ronnie, along with his stage counterpart, Rosa Luna, marked a rousing initiation of their first coast-to-coast tour across the United States. Enveloped in fog and bathed in carefully choreographed lighting, they transport their audiences directly into the heart of Ronnie’s imagined retro-futuristic club scene.

Die Kanadier TOMB MOLD waren in den ersten Jahren nach der Bandgründung 2015 ziemlich produktiv. Im Zeitraum von vier Jahren veröffentlichte die Band drei Demos, ebenso viele Studioalben sowie eine EP. Nach dem starken 2019er Werk “Planetary Clairvoyance” hat die Band aus Toronto das Tempo ein wenig runter gefahren. Ob es an Covid lag? Man weiß es nicht. Ein weiteres Demo folgte 2022 und nun, im Oktober 2023 erblickte das vierte Album “The Enduring Spirit” das Licht der Welt, wie schon die beiden Vorgänger über das US Label 20 Buck Spin.

Aus der Gruft in den Weltraum – TOMB MOLD haben sich seit ihrem Debüt immer weiter entwickelt – aber auch zum besseren?
Dabei hat für die Band eine merkliche Entwicklung vom gruftigen, verranzten Death Metal der ersten beiden Alben in eine technischere, “sauberere” Richtung seit “Planetary Clairvoyance” stattgefunden. Diesen Weg gehen TOMB MOLD jetzt noch weiter, sie sind auf “The Enduring Spirit” noch technischer unterwegs als auf dem Vorgänger. Neben den vertrackten Riffs sind es vor allem die coolen Bassläufe von Kevi Sia, die hervorstechen. “Will Of Whispers” startet sehr progressiv-verspielt, bevor es dann doch wieder in Richtung Tech Death Gefrickel umschlägt, immer wieder aufgelockert von progiggen, fast schon jazzigen Passagen. Auch der Schlusspart von “Servants of Possibility” ist ein kleines Prog Death-Feuerwerk. Den Schlusspunkt setzt das über elf Minuten lange “The Enduring Spirit Of Calamity”, welches nach ungefähr fünf Minuten Tech Death in einen ruhigen, relaxten Trip übergeht, um erst kurz vor Ende im großen Finale wieder den Bogen zurück zum Death Metal zu spannen.

“The Enduring Spirit” ist ein solides Tech Death-Album, andere konnten das in letzter Zeit aber deutlich besser als TOMB MOLD
Alles in allem liefern TOMB MOLD auf ihrem vierten Album eine solide Vorstellung ab. Mehr aber eben auch nicht. Spielerisch ist das alles ziemlich geil, doch es kommen keine wirklich packenden Song dabei herum. Bands wie BLOOD INCANTATION oder wenn wir mal tiefer im internationalen Underground buddeln CRITICAL EXTRAVASATION aus Russland oder SUPRESSION aus Chile hatten da in den letzten Jahren einfach deutlich mehr zu bieten in diesem Genre. So bleibt “The Enduring Spirit” ein solides Stück Tech Death, nicht mehr und nicht weniger.

Das Atmospheric Black Metal- / Melodic Death Metal-Projekt SHYLMAGOGHNAR stellt sein neues Album “Convergence” mit einer dritten Single vor: “Infinion” bei YouTube.

Das Stück folgt auf den Preview-Track”The Sea“, welcher der verstorbenen Mutter des Solo-Künstlers gewidmet ist. Seit September steht die erste Vorab-Single “Follow The River” bei YouTube bereit. Mastermind Nimblkorg erläutert:

endlich kann ich das Schweigen über das kommende 3. Album von Shylmagoghnar, CONVERGENCE, brechen.

Auf einer Reise des Todes erwacht der Protagonist in einer surrealen Welt. Sind die Dinge, die er sieht, real, oder nur die Machenschaften eines sterbenden Gehirns? Das spielt jetzt keine Rolle mehr. Alles, was er weiß, ist, dass er dem Fluss folgen muss.”
