Background/Info: Bulgarian producer Dimitar Georgiev joined hands with Sonic Groove to release his newest EP “Strife”.

Content: “Strife” stands for hard-banging Techno music with a cold touch on top. Repetitive loops and pumping kicks are clearly made for dancefloors. I also notice a few Acid elements in the background.

+ + + : The opening cut “Energy” is a heavy and devastating opener. I like the uplifting beat mixed with cold sequences and spoken samplings. It sounds like underground Techno at its best.

– – – : The opening track also is the best cut from the work so the other tracks -which are also hard and pumping, sound a bit as an antithesis to the solid opener.

Conclusion: Dimitar Georgiev has found the right home for his sound on Sonic Groove. I however think this artist can do better than what I’ve heard on “Strife”.

Best songs: “Energy”.

Ausnahme-Cellistin JO QUAIL spannt auf ihrem neuen Album “Invocation & Supplication” mit Maria Franz (HEILUNG) und Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari zusammen und schafft mit “Invocation & Supplication” ein spirituelles Werk, das in seiner Dichte an die düsteren alten Zeiten von DEAD CAN DANCE oder die weniger greifbaren Künstler auf COLD MEAT INDUSTRY erinnert. Von einer Kopie ist “Invocation & Supplication” natürlich weit entfernt, denn dafür ist JO QUAIL schlicht zu eigenständig und eigenwillig. Was indes nicht bedeutet, dass sie sich in den Vordergrund drängt und sich zu ausgedehnten Cello-Soli hinreissen lässt. Im Gegenteil.

Soundlandschaften statt starre Songstrukturen
Auf “Invocation & Supplication” sucht man vergebens starre Songstrukturen. Es wäre auch kaum denkbar gewesen, dass sich Maria Franz dafür hätte begeistern können. Vielmehr erschafft JO QUAIL Soundlandschaften. Bedrückend, Raum einnehmend, stellenweise gar beängstigend. Weite Passagen kommen ohne Gesang aus, und wenn der Gesang einsetzt, ist er beschwörend, entrückt, hypnotisch. Man muss sich auf das Album einlassen, willig sein, auf diese Reise zu gehen – und so wird “Invocation & Supplication” zu einem Werk, das weder gefallen will noch zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit passt. Aber genau dies scheint auch eines der Ziele von JO QUAIL zu sein.

Out via Fabrika Records is an all new, self-titled (or non-titled) 2-track vinyl single by Lebanon Hanover. This vinyl single comes in 2 different editions and is a taster for the all new 2024 album. Both editions come in an embossed cover and will be released on November 24.

The regular black vinyl is limited to 1200 copies while the gold version is limited to 500 copies.

The single is William Maybelline and Larissa Iceglass’ first new material since the 2020 album “Sci-Fi Sky” and holds 2 tracks: “Better than going under” and “Kyiv”.

Dawn of Ashes, an American industrial / extreme metal band formed in 2001, has announced their return to Metropolis Records. They made three albums for Metropolis Records in the late 2010s, having previously recorded for Metal Blade and subsequently for Artoffact Records. They have just released a single entitled “Her Lethal Injection” for the latter, but have today announced a return to Metropolis for their next studio album due out in early 2024.

Dawn of Ashes is an American industrial metal band founded in 2000 from Los Angeles, California, United States. Singer and music composer Kristof Bathory started Dawn Of Ashes as a purely dark electronic act, influenced by various forms of extreme metal, but in 2009 he embraced and made a huge leap into the extreme metal world, eventually fusing both styles.

Out now on limited clear transparent vinyl (500 copies) is “Kaputt gehen”, the first (7-track) album for Gast on Z Pop-Records. Z Pop-Records is the new sister label of Young & Cold Records and with “Kaputt Gehen” the label shows its concept of being a home for modern, German-language music that has roots in the Neue Deutsche Welle (German New Wave) from the early 80s.

The label offers bands and projects that don’t clearly fit into the darkwave/postpunk fields of the main label and appeal to a broader audience. Gast presented its first songs digitally in autumn 2022 and has now, around a year later, completed its debut mini-LP. Note that he track “Boxer” was produced with special guest Traumatin, another German New Wave artist.

His academic tenure as a professor in Communication Studies (as his alter ego, Brian Hunter) is but one facet of his extensive repertoire; he is also a published zine author, artist, and has lent his considerable expertise to the production of a number of albums for a diverse roster of artists across the Midwest and further afield.

With the release of After Fear, his sophomore studio endeavour, Brother Wolf offers an introspective commentary on the seismic events that have shaped the early part of the decade, from the global pandemic to the insurrection of January 6th. In this latest project, he convenes a group of accomplished musicians: Matt Younker, whose percussion expertise has been honed in bands such as Ozenza and The War Between; bassist Britt Younker, also of Ozenza fame; guitarist Justin Sharrow, with credits including Brena and UTO; and pianist Jennifer Dodde.

After Fear ushers its audience into a world of post-punk reverie, exploring the layered emotions and experiences of our shared human condition. Brother Wolf stands at the center of this ensemble, not only composing but also playing each instrument, crafting arrangements that marry the strum of guitars with the occasional blare of horns, the warmth of strings, and the clarity of piano melodies—all coalescing around the gravitational pull of the bass. Owe It All To You surges with raw post-punk vitality, a fast-paced anthem of Brother Wolf’s triumph over addiction. Each chord is a heartbeat, each refrain a step towards liberation. Meltdown Breakthrough casts an electric guitar’s dystopian spell, Brother Wolf’s gritty voice entwines with a soundscape of desolation, echoing the yearning to rekindle a fractured friendship. Both tracks, intense and reflective, underscore the tumult of internal and external worlds colliding, the quest for redemption, and the poignancy of human connection amidst a landscape forever altered.

Snakes marks a departure from its album counterparts, embracing a synthetic and electric soundscape, distinguished as the most atmospherically rich track, weaving repetitive whispers with a backdrop of drones. Accompanied by a video spotlighting Sophia Jacobs, muse and spouse of Benjamin Hunter, it offers a haunting visual complement.

Worthless Billionaire is a satirical number inspired by the turbulence of Elon Musk’s disastrous Twitter takeover. This cunning track envelops listeners in the psyche of a callous magnate, blind to the societal decay wrought by their avarice. Its delivery melds a biting wit with a chilling edge, laying bare a critique of rampant wealth and influence’s corrosive impact in today’s world.

Recognizing interlaces strings with precise rhythms, examining the tension between faith and identity. Its reflective lyrics and the moment of liberation from religious constraints underscore the profound struggle for personal change against a backdrop of devout isolation.

Something Better, with its haunting keyboard and insistent bass, gives voice to a child’s yearning for ideological escape from their parents’ post-January 6th conspiratorial fervour. The track crescendos into a psychedelic plea for evolution, echoing the potent idea that wisdom can also flow from the young, suggesting a beacon of hope for familial and societal transformation.

The phrase “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” is a central tenet of Thelema, a spiritual philosophy or religion that was developed by the early 20th-century British writer, mountaineer, and occultist Aleister Crowley. Thelema is derived from the Greek word θέλημα, meaning “will” or “intention.” This principle suggests that individuals have their own unique purpose or “true will” in life, and that they should discover and live in accordance. The concept is not intended to endorse simply doing whatever one pleases, but rather implies that one should seek out the inner nature or spiritual truth of their being and follow that path diligently. It’s a call to live authentically in accordance with one’s own individual will rather than conforming to societal expectations or external moral codes.In the anthemic <a href="https://open.spotify.com/track/2npnEHi04F8v2BrwmHHY9w?si=6931f44b059a485e">‘Star,’</a> the anthem urges self-discovery and shedding hatred.

Concluding the album with an echo of its commencement, Present crafts a sense of coherence that encapsulates the collection. This final piece boasts a production of expansive cinematic flourish, magnifying the emotive arc of the record. In this denouement, Brother Wolf’s vocal performance rises to a luminescent climax, his harmonies channeling a Bowie-like resonance that hums with optimism. In an upcoming release on November 10, 2023 via Sérotine Records, French composer Anthony Laguerre, in collaboration with Les Percussions de Strasbourg, will present “MYOTIS V,” a 34-minute composition. This work follows Laguerre’s solo project “MYOTIS” from 2019 and extends his exploration into a group setting. “MYOTIS V” is characterized by a blend of amplified percussion and electronic sounds.

Laguerre’s objective with “MYOTIS V” was to amplify sounds typically inaudible without assistance and incorporate them into his music. The composition employs these sounds as a form of melody and incorporates rhythms produced from skin and metal instruments. The music is intended to provide a range of volume and dramaturgy.

The album was recorded in January 2022 at Théâtre de Haute-Pierre in Strasbourg by Anthony Laguerre and Stéphane Levigneront. Subsequent mixing took place in November 2022 by Anthony Laguerre at Shadyn Studio in Nancy, and mastering was completed in December 2022 by Jean-François Hustin at Studio Organic in Liège. The electroacoustic piece was initially created for the Festival Météo in Mulhouse in August 2021 and has been produced by association Motrice. Co-producers include Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Festival Météo, CCAM Vandoeuvre-Les-Nancy, Ville de Nancy, with support from CNM, SACEM, DRAC, and Région Grand Est.

Les Percussions de Strasbourg is a contemporary classical music percussion ensemble made up of six percussionists. Founded in 1962, the ensemble is still performing and commissioning music. The current lineup has played together for 15 years. Their discography includes two albums for Limelight Records. They have premiered over 250 works of contemporary classical music, including Iannis Xenakis’s “Pléïades”, “Inventions” by Miloslav KabeláÄ� and Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Musik im Bauch”. The US-based post-punk / synthwave act The Sea At Midnight, has just released a four-song EP, “Oceans”, in preview of what is to come on April 1st with the release of a full-length album to follow up their self-titled release “The Sea At Midnight”. The EP is available from Bandcamp and all other digital plaforms.

Behind the The Sea At Midnight project we find Vince Grant, a Chicago born artist. The material was producer by Chris King (Cold Showers) and drum programmer Brandon Pierce. The EP was actually self-released a couple of weeks ago.

For the Los Angeles songwriter Vince Grant it was the older postpunk bands like the Cure, Joy Division, the Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees, New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen and other bands of that era that inspired him to start making music. He bounced back and forth between New York and LA for a number of years, playing and singing in numerous bands while grappling with drug addiction and alcoholism. After getting sober and making a serious attempt at dealing with his lifelong depression,
Vince now calls LA home.

Zuvor gab es schon ein Musikvideo zum Track “Earn It” bei YouTube. Es handelt sich bei dem Stück um das erste Material seit dem Comeback-Album “The Ghost Inside” (2020). Produziert wurde “Earn It” von Tyler Smyth und Dan Braunstein, den Mix übernahm Zakk Cervini.

Originally self-released via their DIY Tiny Box label in a very limited quantity, the Scottish post-punk/minimal electro act Hanging Freud are now also re-releasing their previous (6th) studio album “Persona Normal” via their new label partner Spleen+ (division of the Belgian Alfa Matrix label group), digitally via Bandcamp, in a digipak edition, as well as vinyl in two different colours (solid gold or solid silver) each strictly limited to 150 units worldwide.

Was ON THORNS I LAY vielen ihrer Genre-Kollegen voraushaben, verrät bereits ein Blick auf die Besetzung: Mit einem dedizierten Mann am Keyboard in ihren Reihen haben die Griechen das ideale Werkzeug bei der Hand, um ihrem Doom-Death-Metal die passende Atmosphäre auf den Leib zu schneidern. Das gilt auch, wenn Antonis Ventouris an den Tasten zugleich Selbstbeherrschung bewahrt; sich im Vergleich zu „Threnos“ (2020) häufig zurücknimmt und subtil im Hintergrund die Stimmung vorgibt.

Auf diese Weise wird das selbstbetitelte zehnte Studiowerk zu einem recht verbitterten Brocken, der wie im Opener „Fallen From Grace“ zumeist von einer präsenten Lead-Gitarre durchzogen ist, insgesamt aber massiver auftritt, als es etwa das kurz zuvor erschienene „Your Sunset My Sunrise“ (2023) DÉCEMBRE NOIRs tut. Momente des Aufbruchs und der Hoffnung brechen nur selten durch den düsteren Schleier, finden mit dem dezent angezogenen Tempo in „Newborn Skies“ und Ventouris‘ getragener Synth-Untermalung dann jedoch die richtigen Mittel, um sich zeitweise aus dem eisernen Griff der Rhythmussektion lösen zu können.

“On Thorns I Lay” macht vieles richtig, fesselt aber nicht nachhaltig
Flöten, Streicher und gezupfte Ethno-Instrumente verleihen „On Thorns I Lay“ wiederum bei aller Schwere einen melancholischen Anstrich, welcher sich in kurzen Phasen der Introspektion ebenso äußert wie in der teils klagenden Lead-Gitarre. Hinzu kommt im groovenden „Raise Empires“ eine wiedererstarkte Entschlossenheit, mit der die Gruppe vor dem packenden Finale „Thorns Of Fire“ nochmals einen neuen Impuls zu setzen vermag.

In Gleichförmigkeit versinken müssen ON THORNS I LAY folglich nicht, wenngleich sich der Startvorteil des Sextetts nach einer knappen Dreiviertelstunde letztendlich leider nicht wirklich ausgezahlt hat. Dass sich die Band erst im Schlusstrack das ganze Potenzial ihres Keyboarders zunutze macht und den zermürbenden Riffs vielschichtige Folk- und Streicher-Arrangements zur Seite stellt, ist bedauerlich. Manchmal darf man selbst im Doom-Death gerne die Zügel ein wenig lockerer nehmen, um einem guten Werk ein unwiderstehliches Alleinstellungsmerkmal zu schenken.

Vor sechs Jahren hatte ich das Vergnügen, “Instruction For Destruction”, das zweite Album der schweizer Thrasher COMANIAC rezensieren zu dürfen. Der melodische, anspruchsvolle Thrash Metal gefiel mir damals schon ziemlich gut, ich habe der Band damals aber auch Steigerungspotential beim Gesang attestiert. Die 2020er Scheibe “Holodox” habe ich leider verpasst, dafür liegt mir nun das aktuelle Werk “None For All” zur Besprechung vor. Und eines gleich vorweg: Jonas Schmid hat sich als Sänger definitiv entwickelt. Ein zweiter David White ist er immer noch nicht, wird er wohl auch nicht mehr werden, dafür shoutet er inzwischen stellenweise auch deutlich aggressiver. Andererseits gibt es mit “Long Life Doll” auch eine Ballade, bei der Jonas mit seinem melodischen Gesang voll und ganz überzeugt. Das klingt richtig gut.

Die Gitarrenarbeit auf “None For All” ist eine Klasse für sich
Aber eine Klasse für sich sind COMANIAC, wenn die Herren Schmid und Mösinger die Äxte kreisen lassen. Ihr Thrash Metal klingt immer noch sehr von Bands wie HEATHEN beeinflusst, sprich es wird eher mit dem Skalpell operiert als mit der Keule. “Eye To Eye” startet mit einem sanften Gitarrenintro, bevor COMANIAC mit klassischen Bay Area-Riffing loslegen. Die Jungs wissen definitiv, was sie tun. Noch wilder wird es beim folgenden “Desolation Manifest”. Alleine mit der Instrumental-Abfahrt am Anfang weisen COMANIAC 90% der Konkurrenz mal eben auf die Ersatzbank. Wahnsinn, was die Jungs da zaubern. Gerade die Leadgitarre tobt sich hier richtig aus. “None For All” oder “Start The Madness” sind weitere anspruchsvolle und rasante Thrash-Massaker vom Allerfeinsten, während “Nothing But Lies” uns im gemäßigteren Tempo die Nackenmuskeln massiert. Vertrackter wird es dann wieder mit “Breakdown Rite” und “Between The Stars”, bevor mit “Self Sacrifice” eine weitere Ballade das Album beendet.

COMANIAC zeigen sich auf “None For All” in beeindruckender Form – viel besser geht diese Art von Thrash kaum
Ich hatte die Band von “Instruction For Destruction” wie gesagt in guter Erinnerung. Aber die Entwicklung, die COMANIAC seitdem gemacht haben, ist schon beeindruckend. Klar, beim Gesang gibt es immer noch Luft nach oben, aber davon abgesehen ist “None For All” wirklich ein herausragendes Stück anspruchsvoller, technischer Thrash Metal geworden. Es gibt sowohl Songs, die trotz aller technischen Klasse ziemlich straight ins Ohr gehen als auch, vor allem in der zweiten Hälfte, frickeligere Stücke und eben auch zwei Balladen, sodass “None For All” eben auch ein abwechslungsreiches Album geworden ist. An das völlig überragende “Novo oružje protiv bola” aus dem Hause QUASARBORN kommt “None For All” zwar nicht heran, ein Jahreshighlight in der Kategorie thrash with class ist das vierte Album der Schweizer aber ohne jede Frage!

Out now is the new single from Cop International signee Mari Kattman called “URGOD.AI”. “URGOD.AI” comes backed by the B-side “Lower Yourself”.

Mari Kattman has been self-recording, writing, composing, and live performing music since 2012. Currently, she operates under the Mari Kattman name as a solo artist and worked with Tom Shear, of Assemblage 23, on a project called Helix.

She has been collaborating with such artists as Mesh, Ivardensphere, Jean-Marc Lederman, Psy’Aviah, Aesthetiche, Neuroticfish BlackCarBurning, Cassetter, This Morn Omina, Solitary Experiments, Mephisto Walz, Aiboforcen, Interface and Comaduster. She also has worked on many other label releases including ones for Metropolis Records, Alfa Matrix, FiXT and will release her solo work on COP International.

Alaska’s goth rock duo, Cliff and Ivy have just unveiled their new single, “We Ignite”, featuring guitarwork from Jim Babjak of The Smithereens.

“We Ignite” is the first single from Cliff and Ivy’s next album called “Sinister Stars”, to be released early spring, 2024. The song is about lovers who escape to a passionate galaxy filled with dark glam rock-n-roll stars. Their love burns bright enough to own a universe of darkness.

Cliff and Ivy talk about their work with Jim Babjak: “We wanted to collaborate with musicians we’ve known for many years. Usually we work as a duo. This was an opportunity to do a classic rock style tune with a darker feel. Jim Babjak’s lead guitar for The Smithereens has always been an inspiration. We are from the same home town, New Brunswick, NJ. His style is pop and melodic yet still with a mysterious psychedelic rock edge. We wanted to make a song with a dark psychedelic rock feel so he could add his guitar. Brian Troisi is a long time collaborator and played drums with us in our first punk band and previous Cliff and Ivy releases.”

+ + + : “Zwei” is not exactly a copy-paste of “Eins”. This work sounds far more Experimental although I still like the Minimal-Electro basis. The best cuts “Stracks” and “Untergrund” are right at the final part of the album. You’ll notice explicit Industrial elements mixed with Minimal-Electro. I also like the very few spoken samplings injecting a bit of diversity to the work which remains mainly instrumental.

– – – : I was less convinced by the explicit Experimental side of the work which also marks the main difference with the debut album.

Conclusion: I expected a bit more out of this new opus but I still recommend you to keep an eye on this German project.

In einigen Wochen wird mit “A Giant Bound to Fall” das neue Album der Melodic Death Metal-Band ETERNAL STORM erscheinen. Es ist nach “Come the Tide” (2019) das zweite Album des spanischen Trios, welches aus Daniel R. Flys, Jaime Torres und Daniel Maganto besteht. Als Session-Drummer wirkte Gabriel Valcázar (WORMED, ERNIA) mit.

“A Giant Bound to Fall” wurde erneut mit einem Cover-Artwork von Leoncio Harmr (u.a. für SETH tätig) ausgestattet und wird am 16. Februar 2024 via Transcending Obscurity Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach den Tracks “Last Refuge” und “A Dim Illusion” (mit Sven de Caluwé (ABORTED)) nun auch den Titeltrack zu hören.

Leeds-based experimental artist Teresa Winter has announced the release of her new album titled “Proserpine”, set to be available on the 24th of November 2023. This album is a debut for the Glasgow-based label Night School Records and will be released in both vinyl and digital formats, with the vinyl edition limited to 400 copies. You can pre-order the release from bandcamp.

“Proserpine” is a culmination of music recorded over the seasons of 2021 and 2022. The album features a variety of sounds, including field recordings and mantric vocals, and explores themes of change and transformation. The music narrative is built upon circular patterns and ritualistic elements, echoing themes of insubstantiality and continual change.

The album’s thematic inspiration is drawn from classical mythology, referencing the Roman goddess Proserpine, known for her transitions between the seasons, realms, and states of being. The tracklist of “Proserpine” includes nine compositions.

Art for the album is created by Teresa Winter herself, with design and layout by Musho Fernandez. Winter, who hails from Yorkshire, holds a PhD in Musicology and has previously released music on several notable labels. Her academic background and experimental approach to music production are evident in her work, which integrates her interests in electronic music and esoteric spiritual practices.
