In their latest gem from the ethereal haze of dream pop, the Canadian trio <a href="https://www.instagram.com/swiimsmusic" target="_new" rel="noopener">SWiiMS</a> unveils their video for “In Puzzles,” a track that reverberates with a comforting sense of musical nostalgia. This group, known for their emotional and immersive soundscapes, draws from a rich tapestry of influences including 80s New Wave, 90s Indie Rock, Britpop, and Shoegaze, channeling the cloudkissed spirit of bands like DIIV, Slowdive, Beach House, and Alvvays.

Formed in the summer preceding the COVID-19 pandemic, SWiiMS’ story began with Mai Diaz Langou and Colin Thompson connecting through a Craigslist Musicians Wanted ad. Their instant chemistry, combined with the addition of bassist and vocalist Cian O’Ruanaidh, marked the beginning of a captivating musical journey.

On their latest single “In Puzzles”, the second from their debut LP” Into The Blue Night,” the band muses:

“It reflects on the process of figuring out your new relationship. Enjoying every moment and not rushing to move ahead too fast. Savoring the minutes, hours, and days as you discover each other. Giving signals, but also holding things back, letting things blossom slowly. The song, like the rest of the album, tries to capture the balancing act of falling in love and the feelings of isolation, and loss brought on by the global pandemic. All in all, it is a song that is filled with hope and anticipation.”

The accompanying video for “In Puzzles” is a visual treat featuring Mai Diaz Langou bicycling in a surreal reverse chronology, painting an intriguing picture with elements like wine stains, popped balloons, and a teddy bear. It’s an idyllic daydream, harking back to the blissful nostalgia of late 80s and early 90s alternative rock singles and music videos.

SWiiMS has channeled the challenges of recent years into their debut LP, transforming struggle into stunning art. After making waves at college radio with their 2020 debut EP “Through Waves,” they have now release their highly anticipated debut LP, “Into The Blue Night.” The album, written and recorded over the last year, explores a range of personal themes and marks a significant evolution from their EP.

Guitarist/vocalist Colin Thompson describes “Into The Blue Night” as an emergence from darkness into light, amplifying the elements of their sound. The album, produced and engineered by Toronto’s Josh Korody, promises to be a significant step in their artistic journey.

Die Modern Thrash Metal-Band DUST BOLT hat einen Plattenvertrag mit AFM Records abgeschlossen. Das fünfte Studioalbum trägt den Titel “Sound & Fury” und erscheint am 23. Februar 2024 über das neue Label.

Nun haben DUST BOLT mit “Burning Pieces” einen weiteren Song der Platte im Netz geteilt.

Einige der neuen Tracks kann man sich seit geraumer Zeit anhören: Mit “New Flame” gibt es seit Anfang Oktober ein weiteres Lyric-Video . Zuvor gab es auch zum Titeltrack ein Video: “Sound & Fury” gibt’s bei YouTube.

Mit  “I Witness  bei YouTube veröffentlichten DUST BOLT schon im Juli die erste Single von “Sound & Fury”. Die Formation erläutert den Entstehungsprozess der Platte:

“Als wir den Prozess für dieses Album gestartet haben, hatten wir im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes nichts. Kein Geld, keine Budgets, kein Label – nichts. Nichts, als eine Vision. Eine Vision und uns. So haben wir begonnen, die Drums in Berlin mit geplünderter Kohle von Omas Sparbuch zu recorden. Und so haben wir weiter gemacht. Alles aus eigener Kraft und Hand. Eine Studio gebaut, das Engineering gelernt. Bis ich mich als Hauptproduzent (zusammen mit einem Freund und fast schon 5. Bandmember) in einem Keller in München wiederfand. Stunden, Tage, Wochen. Am Ende, konnten wir uns erneut glücklich schätzen mit Moritz Enders für das Mixing & Mastering (u.A. für Casper, Silbermond, Kraftklub, The Intersphere) den Kreis unserer Ideen und Vision zu schließen.

Methatesiophobie: die Angst vor Veränderung. Ein Gefühl, das so mancher Metalhead kennen dürfte und gerade im Fan-Lager der Modern-Metal-Durchstarter SPIRITBOX für die eine oder andere Schweißperle verantwortlich zeichnete. Schließlich waren die Kanadier auf ihrer Digital-EP „Rotoscope“ (2022) plötzlich mehr im groovenden Alt-Rock unterwegs, anstatt die progressiven Metalcore-Wurzeln zu pflegen. Der Anfang vom Ende des ehemals so markanten Bandsounds?

Keineswegs, wie sich knapp anderthalb Jahre später herausstellt. Vielmehr zeigt „The Fear Of Fear“ in knackigen 25 Minuten, wie breit SPIRITBOX stilistisch mittlerweile aufgestellt sind. Zugegeben, eine Rückkehr zu Anfangszeiten sieht anders aus, doch selbst in Abwesenheit der dominant-experimentellen Seite vereinen die versammelten sechs Kompositionen sowohl die bislang härtesten als auch eingängigsten Kompositionen der Band.

Auf “The Fear Of Fear” zeigen sich SPIRITBOX stilistisch breit aufgestellt
Der Drumcomputer in den ruhigen Momenten kann beispielsweise die Wucht des Vorschlaghammers kaum dämpfen, mit der uns das bitterböse „Angel Eyes“ in den Boden rammt. Die atmosphärischen und oft unbequemen Gitarrenleads im Hintergrund teilt sich das Stück dabei mit dem nicht minder aggressiven „Cellar Door“, wo gerade die unterschwelligen Soundscapes doch den Geist von „Belcarra“ in sich tragen. Ein wunderbarer und nicht selten dissonanter Nährboden also für die tief gestimmten Gitarren, dem SPIRITBOX im Breakdown gar Polyrhythmik beifügen.

Analog könnte der Kontrast zum feinfühligen „Too Close / Too Late“ kaum größer sein, wo der zarte Gesang Courtney LaPlantes die Seele streichelt, während dezente Stimm-Modulation und Synth-Arbeit dem warmen Klangbild einen nahezu schwerelosen Grundtenor verleihen. Allein die getragenen Alt-Pop-Einflüsse kommen im abschließenden „Ultraviolet“ noch deutlicher zum Vorschein, ohne jedoch die charakteristische Handschrift Mike Stringers an der Gitarre abzulegen.

SPIRITBOX wissen genau, mit welchen Stilmitteln sie ihre Ziele erreichen
Zwischen den Extremen führt selbiger diese Gegensätze mit beeindruckender Selbstverständlichkeit zusammen: So offenbart sich das zwischen den Stühlen sitzende „Jaded“ schnell als der heimliche Hit der EP, dessen Sogwirkung zwischen eingängig-groovendem Refrain und aggressiven Spitzen exakt die Mischwerte erreicht, welche SPIRITBOX mit „Eternal Blue“ im Jahr 2021 zum Durchbruch verhalfen.

Folglich weiß das Quartett genau, wohin es will und mit welchen Stilmitteln es seine Ziele erreichen kann. Dass Bassist Josh Gilbert (ex-AS I LAY DYING) gesanglich bislang nicht wirklich zum Zug kommt, scheint daher bewusst einkalkuliert. Das mag man durchaus als verschenktes Potenzial sehen, in der Zwischenzeit jedoch haben SPIRITBOX dennoch mühelos das ideale Mittel gegen die Angst vor Veränderung gefunden und ihm gleichzeitig einen Namen gegeben: Phobophobie – „The Fear of Fear“.

Duskwood are a heavy rock band hailing from Somerset, England, who draw from the likes of Kyuss, Wolfmother, Clutch, 1000Mods and Queens of The Stone Age to craft an intense and heavy sound full of rock and roll bombast. New LP 'The Last Voyage' is the epic, hard-riffing saga of a time-traveling space cowboy as told by this potent English heavy rock force, and finds the band rapidly accelerating toward the goal of getting their music into the ears of as many listeners as possible.

London-based auteur, Jojo Orme, known under the moniker <a href="https://www.instagram.com/iamheartworms/">Heartworms</a>, returns triumphantly with her latest single, “May I Comply”, released through Speedy Wunderground. Produced by Dan Carey, this marks Heartworms’ first release since her highly-praised debut EP, “A Comforting Notion,” graced the scene in March of this year.

Uniformity assumes significant importance in Heartworms’ creative process. She draws inspiration from the metronomic precision of bands such as Interpol and Kraftwerk, and is equally influenced by the likes of PJ Harvey. The latter’s dark sense of humour and lyrical finesse subtly infuse her songwriting. The outcome is an invigourating exercise, as well as a platform through which she channels her own self and interests, which encompass a fascination with military history (manifested through her volunteer role at The Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon) and a deep appreciation for the poetry of Pound, Thomas, and Keats.

But sometimes inspiration hits closer to home.

“When I wrote this track I just wanted to get over an ex and to tell my little brother he’s good enough… turned out to be a lot darker than I thought,” says Orme.

Once again, Heartworms has joined forces with filmmaker Gilbert Trejo, who worked with her on “24 Hours.” Once again, they embraced monochrome to focus on Heartworms’ burgeoning stage presence and performance. Channeling Siouxsie strongly here, no dangling lightbulb is safe in her wake.

Jojo and I wanted to lean harder into the stark black and white world that Heartworms is building, washing everything but the band out in a sea of emptiness,” says director Gilbert Trejo. “Between shooting 24 Hours and May I Comply I’ve had the chance to photograph Heartworms on tour and was excited about capturing a bit more of the energy of Jojo’s performance at this stage.”

Heartworms stands as an undeniable force, an artist whose work defies conventional expectations, delivering an impactful and engrossing experience whether on the stage or in the recording studio. The artist, herself, exudes a remarkable presence marked by composure and intensity—a true manifestation of strength and mastery. The Brooklyn-based synthpop duo, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/themysticunderground/">The Mystic Underground</a>, has unveiled their latest single, “Famous Last Words (Of A Generation)”, a poignant song that captures their signature blend of introspective lyrics and captivating electronic soundscapes. The fresh release also includes a dazzling and dark remix by the NYC Synth Pop outfit Ghost Cop and another entrancing synthwave version by halovox, both of which add to the allure of the song.

Channeling the quintessential vibe of the 80s, the track resonates with echoes of John Foxx’s seminal works like Metamatic and The Garden. It’s a buoyant, stylish synth jam that perfectly bridges the generational gap between being both retro and contemporary.

Vladimir Valette describes “Famous Last Words (Of A Generation)” as “a bit of a lament about the passing of time and the rites of passage that we all experience at the expense of the spirit and fervor we tend to leave behind.” He elaborates that the song “also touches on the inevitable generation gap where the next generation looks at the prior one as a bit of a disappointment for leaving their ideals behind.” Valette’s insight paints the song as a reflective and somber meditation on the changes that time brings, especially regarding the loss of youthful passion and the disillusionment that often accompanies aging.

The lyrics focus on broken promises and the transformation of sand to glass, metaphorically exploring the transience of ideals and plans that were once fluid now fragile. Additionally, the song’s contemplation of strength and resilience in the face of hardships speaks to the enduring impact of these generational shifts. Overall, “Famous Last Words (Of A Generation)” emerges as a commentary on the complexities of aging, the evolution of ideals, and the nuanced understanding of strength and vulnerability across generations.

Valette adds with a touch of irony: “So as you can tell, the song is definitely intended to be a candidate as the song of the summer…in Autumn.”

Complementing the track’s introspective theme, the music video brings a retro flair reminiscent of the MTV era. It showcases Valette in a minimalist, stylish studio, leaning and reclining against a vintage CRT television, depicting a scene that could be straight out of a bygone magazine editorial.

Facets’ productions often blend genres between new beat, EBM and 80s dance with defiant club-ready kicks alongside memorable grooves—and Breakable is no different. There’s hints of off-kilter mutant disco, akin to Mick Wills‘ or Alessandro Adriani‘s most distorted beats, alongside tough arpeggiated basslines.

Optimo’s boss, JD Twitch, writes: “EBM has become a much abused term in recent times but here are some tracks exploring that EBM DNA where the creator 100% knows that history and what they are doing. Taking that knowledge and bringing that sound right up to date.”

“NocIÌ€,” Breakable‘s lead track, holds a sensual mystique with ghostly vocals from Marija Kovacević and lyrics by Jesus Martinez. Her Serbo-Croatian-speaking voice is haunting overtop the track’s piercing, sinewy bassline that’s set to a stern dance tempo. Embodying the charisma of Krishna Goineau (Liaisons Dangereuses) or the sexiness of Chris & Cosey, “NocIÌ€” clutches onto the romance of the night and the possibilities it can bring.

Following their first US tour in over a decade, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lebanonhanover/?hl=en">Lebanon Hanover</a> returns with a soul-stirring double A-side single release, marking their first new material since the captivating 2020 album, Sci-Fi Sky. Now, the enigmatic duo of William Maybelline and Larissa Iceglass beckons listeners into unventured sonic domains, intricately weaving folk-driven acoustic dream pop with the vulnerable essence of post-punk in a contemplative exploration of life’s ephemeral yet profound nature.

Embarking on a Cure-like sonic voyage reminiscent of The Head on the Door’ and the Kiss Me Era, side one of the new release, “Better Than Going Under” manifests as a romantic, sombre daydream. William Maybelline’s brooding baritone intertwines with sighing backing vocals, narrating an ode to life’s fleeting yet boundless vistas. The acoustic strums initiate a folk-driven narrative which, when coupled with a celestial choir, crafts a contemplative soundscape of cautious optimism. The lyricism, “Life is full of wonder, it’s better than going under,” encapsulates a message of endurance amidst life’s turbulent waves of sorrow. This track tenderly encourages listeners to embrace the small joys within life’s limited vastness, portraying a psychedelic narrative reminiscent of the evocative vibes of Echo and the Bunnymen or The Church. The music video for the song is directed by Tamas Mesme, with the story written by Maru. The editing is done by Praew Nicharee. It features Wiliam Maybelline and Vincenzo Wieczerzynski as two comrades who meet at New Castle train station. They give each other a special handshake and then head off to enjoy ice cream. The pair then ventures through the city, with William not hesitating to dance along the way. This perfect day ends with the two running into a smiling Larissa, who, brandishing flowers at a cemetery, presents them to a gravestone. Meanwhile, the boys continue to play with a synth nestled between blades of grass, while Larissa continues to smile, turns, and faces the camera.

Mit seinem Musikprojekt ROME setzt sich Jerome Reuter beharrlich für die Ukraine ein. Unlängst hat ROME das grandiose Album “Gates Of Europe“ veröffentlicht, das sich ausschließlich mit dem Ukrainekrieg beschäftigt (Review hier lesen). Zudem ist Reuter bereits mehrfach in die Ukraine gereist, um dort Solidaritätskonzerte für das von Russland angegriffene Land zu spielen. Nach Aussage des Labels war ROME die erste ausländische Band, die nach dem Beginn des russischen Großangriffs in der Ukraine aufgetreten ist.

Das Konzert, das ROME am 18.02.2023 in Kyiv gespielt hat, war besonders bewegend. YouTube hat einen Mitschnitt des faszinierenden Auftritts im Angebot. Inzwischen gibt es auch eine Doppel-CD des Konzerts. Endlich wird dieses herausragende historische Ereignis auch auf diese Weise gewürdigt.

Die Aufnahme beginnt mit sphärischen Klängen. Hieraus entwickelt sich bald der schleppende und wuchtige Industrial-Track „Like Lovers“. Anschließend folgt „Celine In Jerusalem“. Der Folksong klingt live noch eindrucksvoller als in der Studioversion, das Klangbild wirkt noch dynamischer und melodischer. Die Setlist beinhaltet einige bewährte Klassiker. Zum Beispiel „Die Nelke“, „Neue Erinnerung“ und „Der Wolfsmantel“. Alle drei Lieder wirken in der Liveversion druckvoller als in der Studioversion.

Weitere Höhepunkte des Auftritts sind die Stücke „Sons Of Aeeth“, „No Second Troy“, „Ächtung Baby“ und „Families Of Eden“. Besonders ergreifend wirkt der letztgenannte Song. Reuters Stimme klingt hier äußerst intensiv: Man hat das Gefühl, er singt sich die Seele aus dem Leib. Auch die Version des Ohrwurms „One Lion‘s Roar“ ist sehr überzeugend. Das liegt sicher auch daran, dass beim Refrain das Publikum begeistert mitsingt.

Vier Lieder beziehen sich direkt auf den Krieg in der Ukraine: „The Brightest Sun“, „Going Back To Kyiv“, „The Ballad Of Mariupol“ und „Yellow And Blue“. Natürlich wohnt dem Song „Going Back To Kyiv“ bei diesem Konzert eine außerordentlich starke Symbolkraft inne. Die Atmosphäre wirkt während dieses Lieds besonders feierlich.

Beide CDs verdeutlichen sehr eindringlich, dass bei diesem Konzert ein machtvoller Zauber des Zusammenhalts gegenwärtig war. Dieser starke Zauber wird besonders greifbar, wenn Reuter am Anfang der großartigen Freiheitshymne „The Brightest Sun“ auf herzergreifende Weise erklärt: Mehrfach habe man ihm abgeraten, in die Ukraine zu reisen, um dort Solidaritätskonzerte zu spielen. Doch nun sei er in Kyiv – und in Sicherheit, denn: Hier sei er unter Brüdern! Kein Zweifel: Die Worte und Taten Reuters zeugen von einem vorbildlichen Charakter! Wen Reuters Engagement für die Ukraine nicht berührt, hat vermutlich ein Herz aus Stein.

Die wundervolle Idee eines freien Europas wird vor allem mit den Songs „Who Only Europe Know“, „Uropia O Morte“ und „One Fire“ beschworen. Das Konzert endet mit dem mitreißenden und sehnsuchtsvoll klingenden Lied „Swords To Rust“. Danach sind noch die feierlichen Töne der Klangcollage „Les Hirondelles“ zu hören – und viel Applaus!

Der Konzertmitschnitt bietet eine ausgewogene Mischung aus den verschiedensten Schaffensperioden von ROME. Die Klangqualität der beiden CDs ist sehr gut. Fast alle Liveversionen wirken kraftvoller als die Studioversionen. Die Musik klingt nicht verwaschen, die einzelnen Klangelemente sind differenziert wahrnehmbar. Reuters außergewöhnlich schöner Gesang steht im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Das effektvolle Schlagzeugspiel von Yann Dalscheid kommt gut zur Geltung, ebenso sein intensiv wirkender Hintergrundgesang. Bei diesem famosen Konzert stand Thierry Hames am Mischpult.

Das Cover der CDs ist edel gestaltet. Vier stimmungsvolle Schwarzweiß-Fotografien vermitteln einen starken optischen Eindruck dieses grandiosen Konzerts. Beim Öffnen des Covers fällt der Blick nicht nur auf die CDs, sondern auch auf einen zweiseitigen Text von Jerome Reuter. Reuter beschreibt in seinem Text die besondere Atmosphäre des Konzerts: Manche der Konzertbesucher waren Frontkämpfer. Sie schenkten ihm als Dank für seine Unterstützung Flaggen und Abzeichen ihrer Einheiten. Reuter erinnert daran, dass ein Konzertbesucher die magische Stimmung dieses Abends mit den folgenden Worten beschrieben hat: „For the duration of the show, it felt like we had already won.“

Reuter erläutert auch, warum ihn der Freiheitskampf der Ukraine so stark bewegt und warum er diesen Kampf unterstützt. Dabei äußert er sich auch zum Mut der Ukrainer und Ukrainerinnen: „Their courage charms us, because it indicates that Western man can still love an idea better than all things in the world; that in these European lands there are still men who will venture all to put in act the invisible thought of their mind, the idea of their free nation. Men and women of courage, resolutely minded in a just cause, are also full of inspiring faith to the rest of our European family.

While few of us in the West are called to charge into battle these days, we can learn many a thing from our Ukrainian brothers and continue to be inspired to choose the good, true, and honorable in a world where it can be hard to keep carrying the fire.

The Gods hold with the courageous. Ukraine will prevail. For your and our freedom – To Life! SLAVA UKRAINI! UROPIA O MORTE!“

Fazit: ROME hat in Kyiv zur Unterstützung des ukrainischen Freiheitskampfes ein besonders eindrucksvolles Solidaritätskonzert gespielt. Dieses herausragende historische Ereignis dokumentiert diese Doppel-CD auf großartige Weise. Es werden bezaubernde Stimmungsbilder offenbart. Kraftvolle Bilder der Liebe, der Solidarität und des Mutes. Diese Bilder schenken Kraft für den europäischen Freiheitskampf gegen die Tyrannei. Vieles deutet darauf hin, dass sich zurzeit in der Ukraine das Schicksal Europas entscheidet. Angesichts dieser ernsten Lage verhalten sich Jerome Reuter und seine Mitstreiter vorbildlich. Sie halten die Fahne der europäischen Solidarität hoch empor in den Himmel des politischen Idealismus! HINAYANA veröffentlichten am 10. November 2023 ihr neues Album “Shatter And Fall”. Zum Song “A Tide Unturning” hat die Gruppe nun ein Lyric-Video veröffentlicht. Als Gast zu hören ist dabei Tuomas Saukkonen (WOLFHEART, BEFORE THE DAWN).

Mit einem Video zu “Triptych Visions” hat die Melodic Death Metal-Band jetzt den zweiten Song daraus vorgestellt. Schon im August präsenierten HINAYANA die erste Single, ein Video zu “Reverse The Code”.

Emileigh Rohn, the artistic force behind Chiasm, has released her latest EP titled “Cut Right Through” via COP International. This record serves as a preview to her seventh studio album, “Zone”. The EP features collaborations with artists such as Assemblage 23, Mildreda, :10, and hEADaCHE.

Recorded at MausHaus Studio over a span of three years (2020-2023), “Cut Right Through” offers an eclectic mix of electronic music navigating through various sub-genres, from dancefloor-ready anthems to glitch-infused tracks. The EP surely showcases Rohn’s versatility and unique approach to electronic music.

Mastering of the EP was done by Jean-Marc Lederman, ensuring a top-notch audio quality. The visual aspect of the EP was in the hands of Christian Petke/DCore providing artwork that complements the musical content.

Greenwashing in architecture happens a lot, but what about the music industry? It’s an issue, as a growing number of companies claim eco-friendly practices while possibly engaging in environmentally harmful activities. The production of physical media, energy use during events, and merchandise manufacturing are areas where transparency is vital. Fans and artists alike are pushing for genuine sustainability efforts, scrutinizing claims to ensure that eco-friendly messages aren’t just a marketing ploy but a reality.

We’ll check into 3 products that have eco-friendly solutions and will check if festivals are really so eco-friendly as they claim to be.

Bio vinyls in the music industry, the real solution or greenwashing?

Traditional vinyl is made from PVC, which is derived from fossil fuels, and the entire process is environmentally damaging​​. A fact. Bio-vinyls produced with reused PVC represent a step towards sustainable practices in the music industry. The production plants basically aim to reduce the environmental footprint by recycling materials that would otherwise contribute to waste. However, the effectiveness and the true environmental impact of these bio-vinyls often are questioned by the eco lobby. Are these practices genuinely sustainable or do they simply serve as a band-aid solution that allows the industry to appear green without making significant changes.

Bio-vinyls, like the ones produced by Optimal Media in collaboration with PlastChem, are an innovative step toward sustainability in the vinyl record industry. Their BioVinyl is made from bio-based PVC, which uses recycled cooking oil or industrial waste gases instead of petroleum, leading to significantly reduced CO2 emissions​​. All good news? Well, you also have to look at the entire production lifecycle. For instance, the PVC granulate used for pressing vinyl can release highly toxic chlorine-based chemicals, from production to disposal. Even eco-focused plants like Deep Grooves acknowledge that while they strive for sustainability, some aspects like the granulate still pose challenges. They actively seek out the most eco-friendly granulate and employ eco-methods even for special patterns and limited editions​​.

With vinyl sales increasing, or better getting a revival, the impact of their production and distribution on the environment is significant. But some plants go even further and have invested in technologies that reduce reliance on electricity or fossil fuels, like the steam presser from Vyril used by Smashed Plastic in Chicago​​. Initiatives by pressing plants and companies like Optimal Media and Deep Grooves show a promising direction, with a shared vision to reduce the environmental footprint of music production and distribution.

What about the cost?

Introducing sustainable practices like the production of bio-vinyls does often come with financial implications. The research and development of alternative materials, obtaining certifications like ISCC PLUS, and implementing greener manufacturing processes can increase production costs. However, the long-term benefits, like reduced environmental impact and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers, can potentially offset these initial expenses. Moreover, as demand for sustainable products grows and technology advances, the cost of eco-friendly alternatives may decrease over time.

Bio-based vinyl compounds, which include bio-based plasticizers, could be more cost-effective than traditional petrochemical-based vinyl. Teknor Apex’s BioVinyl flexible vinyl compounds, for example, use these plasticizers, which have shown greater efficiency than traditional plasticizers, reducing the amount of plasticizer needed per pound of compound, which can lower costs​​. This efficiency, coupled with the reduced carbon footprint of BioVinyl compounds, suggests potential cost benefits over traditional vinyl production methods.

Despite this, it’s important to note that transitioning to these more sustainable materials can involve upfront costs for research, development, and certification. The overall cost implications would likely depend on factors such as scale of production, technological advancements, and market demand for sustainable products. It seems that while initial costs may be higher for setting up eco-friendly production, the long-term savings and benefits could balance or even outweigh these initial investments.

Eco-friendly alternatives for CD production are also available, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact. For example, Breed Media offers a range of manufacturing and packaging solutions with minimized environmental impact, including the Digifile for more sustainable CD and DVD packaging. This option reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional CD jewel cases and uses FSC certified sustainable card, vegetable-based inks, and non-toxic, water-based varnish. What about the cost?

Again, the shift towards sustainability often comes with a premium due to the materials and processes used. However, these costs could be mitigated over time as sustainable practices become more widespread and efficient. If you’re considering such alternatives for CDs, it’s worth exploring these options further with manufacturers who specialize in eco-friendly production.

What about the cost?

The cost may be higher compared to standard T-shirts due to the more sustainable production methods and the higher quality of materials used.

And are the concerts eco-friendly enough?

Accusations of greenwashing have been raised against music festivals and venues. Activists and scholars have criticized some festivals for greenwashing and lack of transparency over their sustainability data. For instance, major events like Tomorrowland have been called out for their large carbon footprint due to audience travel, which significantly outweighs the carbon emissions from waste produced at the festivals​​. Despite efforts to promote green initiatives, the reliance on diesel generators and the extensive carbon footprint from mass transit raise questions about the effectiveness of these measures​​.

Furthermore, data on the actual environmental impact of festivals is scarce, making it difficult to hold them accountable. Only a small portion of festivals have been found to calculate their carbon footprint, and while innovative tools for better measurement and CO2 calculation are becoming available, the actual implementation is still in the early stages​​.

Criticism has also focused on the need for festivals to enforce their sustainability initiatives rather than just promoting them, highlighting the importance of action over appearance​​. The accusations of greenwashing suggest that more concrete actions and transparency are necessary to achieve genuine sustainability in the music industry.

But, some music venues and festivals are already implementing a variety of eco-friendly initiatives to reduce their environmental impact:

EarthPercent by Brian Eno: This initiative aims to support the music industry in transitioning to more sustainable practices. Brian Eno, a prominent figure in music, launched EarthPercent as a means to provide a simple way for the music industry to fund actions addressing the climate emergency. The initiative suggests donating a small percentage of revenue from various aspects of the industry to support climate-related projects.

International Music Summit’s Eco Badge and Eco-Tax: IMS introduced the Eco Badge initiative to incentivize attendees to use sustainable means of transport, offering discounts to those who could prove eco-friendly travel. Moreover, an eco-tax applied to delegate badges helps fund environmental efforts, such as beach cleaning. They are also working towards an environmentally friendly stage setup for their prominent Dalt Villa event, acknowledging the importance of sustainable practices in even the most visible parts of their operations.

A Greener Festival’s Role: Acting as a pioneering force for sustainability in the music industry, A Greener Festival offers education, resources, and recognition through awards for festivals moving towards eco-friendliness. Their Greener Festival Awards have seen an increase in applications, indicating a growing commitment across the industry to sustainability.

The benefits are quite important though.

Cost Savings: Energy-efficient systems and waste reduction programs, while initially expensive, can lead to significant cost savings over time. The investment in green technology can offset the initial costs through reduced energy and maintenance costs​​.

Reputation: Venues with strong sustainability initiatives can enhance their reputation, attracting environmentally-conscious clients and attendees​​.

Regulatory Compliance: Proactive measures can help venues comply with sustainability regulations, which are becoming more common, avoiding potential legal issues​​.

What about the costs

Implementing eco-friendly measures in music venues and festivals comes with both costs and benefits:

The challenges:

Initial Costs: Eco-friendly designs and initiatives often involve significant upfront investment. For instance, installing solar panels, setting up waste recycling systems, or purchasing biofuel generators can be expensive. Such costs may be a barrier, especially for smaller venues or festivals with limited budgets. The return on investment for these green technologies can take several years to realize, necessitating long-term financial planning.

Resistance to Change: Stakeholders, including investors, sponsors, and even attendees, who are accustomed to traditional practices may resist changes necessary for sustainability. This resistance can stem from a variety of concerns, such as the fear of increased ticket prices, changes in the event experience, or simply the inertia of established ways of doing things. Overcoming this resistance often requires education, clear communication about the benefits of sustainability, and sometimes, compromises in the short term to achieve long-term goals.

Regulatory and Standards Modification: Compliance with existing regulations and standards can be a hurdle in implementing sustainable practices. For example, building codes may not accommodate innovative eco-friendly designs, or local waste management regulations may not support the type of recycling initiatives a venue wants to introduce. Navigating this bureaucracy can be time-consuming and costly, and may require venues to advocate for changes in local or regional policies, which is a process that can take years and involve extensive lobbying efforts.

Lots of good things happening, some other aspects seriously need an eco-upgrade, especially in the festival sector.

GREEN LUNG veröffentlichten ihr drittes Album: “This Heathen Land” erschien am 3. November 2023 via Nuclear Blast Records. Zum Song “Hunters In The Sky” hat man jetzt einen Clip bei YouTube geteilt.

Mitte Oktober 2023 veröffentlichte die Band die dritte Single, das Video zu “One For The Sorrow” gibt’s bei YouTube. Mit einem Video zu “Maxine (Witch Queen) haben GREEN LUNG Im SEptember  den zweiten Song daraus geteilt. Reinhören kann man außerdem in die erste Single ‘Mountain Throne’, der Song wurde im August veröffentlicht.

Im Herbst 2023 sind GREEN LUNG auf Tour und geben auch drei Konzerte in Deutschland. Weitere Shows finden dann im Frühjahr 2024 statt, wo die Formation von SPIRIT ADRIFT begleitet wird.

Die Symphonic Power Metal-Band CHAMELION hat mit “Legends & Lores” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der Finnen und wird am 8. Dezember 2023 via Rockshots Records erscheinen.

Das 10-Song-Konzeptalbum, das von Jussi Kulomaa (Ex-MASTERSTROKE) gemixt wurde, sei dazu gedacht, von Anfang bis Ende gehört zu werden, da alle Tracks lyrisch in eine chronologisch fortschreitende Geschichte verwoben sind. Es gibt Helden, Elfen, magische Quests und andere Fantasy-Elemente.

Vorab gibt es nach dem Track “The Shadowleader” mit “Hero´s Tale” nun auch einen Video-Clip.

Frontmann Janne erklärt die Wahl des Cover-Songs:

“Als ich ein Kind war, gab es in der Vinylsammlung meiner Eltern nicht so viele gute Platten. Aber ich fand etwas, das ich wirklich mochte: es war ‘Roadrunner’ von Hurriganes, das ich fast jeden Tag hörte, seit ich noch in den Windeln war. CCR und Boney M. standen damals auch auf meiner sehr begrenzten Playlist. ‘Gotta Go Home’ war irgendwie lustig. Viel lustiger als ‘The Rivers Of Babylon’, das ich auch mochte. Dann kam unser Schlagzeuger Samuli damit an und war von der Idee, es zu covern, sehr begeistert. Ich zeige die gleichen Moves in unserem Video, die ich in meiner Kindheit hunderte Male mit meinem Tennisschläger vor dem Spiegel geübt habe.”

Die Folk / Post-Rock-Band HELGA hat nach “Skogen mumlar” und “Burden” mit “Alive Again” einen dritten Video-Clip von ihrem kommenden Album “Wrapped in Mist” veröffentlicht.

“”Burden” wurde durch den Schmerz inspiriert, mein Zuhause in den Wäldern von Dalarna zu verlassen, und durch die Hoffnung, die mit neuen Verbindungen und Beziehungen einhergeht”, sagt Sängerin Helga Gabriel.

“Wrapped in Mist” ist das erste Album der Schweden unter dem Banner von Season of Mist und wurde von Luiz Felipe Netto (PIAH MATER, LONESHORE) produziert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von David Thiérrée (u.a. für MORK tätig) ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 24. November 2023.

HELGA sind Sängerin Helga Gabriel, die Gitarristen Cai Sumption und Cameron Gledhill, Bassist Ryan Fairclough sowie Drummer Sami Javed.

Die Thrash / Death Metal-Band BOUNDLESS CHAOS hat mit “Down” eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums “Sinister Upheaval” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Sachsen, die zuvor eine EP (“Of Death and Perdition”) und zwei Splits (mit IDLE RUIN und REIGN IN BLOOD) veröffentlicht haben.

Das Debütalbum der 2017 gegründeten Band wird am 19. Januar 2024 via Dying Victims Productions erscheinen.

(Photo by Élodie Duhoo) The Noise Who Runs is the brainchild of songwriter Ian Pickering (of Sneaker Pimps and Front Line Assembly), who also co-authored such hits as “Spin Spin Sugar”, “6 Underground” and “Tesko Suicide”. Upon relocating from northern England to France, Pickering launched this project with Brazilian-French guitarist Felipe Goes.

The UK-France duo The Noise Who Runs now presents “Tune Out, Turn Off, Drop In”, their second single from the forthcoming “Come and Join the Beautiful Army” EP. As with the first single “One Scratch Each”, “Tune Out, Turn Off, Drop In” continues the more stripped-down sound both musically and lyrically.

Felipe Goes says this about the new single: “With all these songs, it seemed better not to try and force it, and with ‘Tune Out’ it was quite complete but lacked something unnerving and off-centre, so the guitars needed to be almost imperceptible as guitars, but somehow add another layer of meaning or interpretation to the feel – something slightly jarring and disorientating. They’re coming from the exact opposite of a rock approach, more just able to change and confuse certain parts of the overall mood of the keyboards, rather than dictating and overpowering the sound.“

And then they get the marketing and advertising people on the case and sell it back to you with a cheap cover-all, shortcut to thinking logo and slogan.”

The full “Come and Join The Beautiful Army” EP was mixed and mastered by Colin C at The Cell Studio, whose clients include such artists as Front Line Assembly and Danny Saber (Black Grape, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Madonna).

Out via Out Of Line is the Corlyx featuring Suzi Sabotage single “Kill Cave”. “Kill Cave” is the second single from Corlyx’s album scheduled for release in 2024. The single comes back by the previously released song “Wasted and alone”.

“Kill Cave” is a homage to the misunderstood and the marginalized, a narrative that resonates with the tales of witchy women throughout history. The music video was a joint effort with Caitlin Stokes at the helm of direction and editing. Her recent work includes the video for Lord Of The Lost’s “Dead End”.

Caitlin Stokes of Corlyx shares why the Finnish artist Suzi Sabotage was her first choice to join her in this song: “I love her powerful iconic energy, and she brought some fresh ideas to the song. We had a blast making the music video together, front women rarely collaborate, and I think we need to see more of this, our unique beauty in harmony is powerful and enchanting.”

CAVALERA / CAVALERA CONSPIRACY haben vor einiger Zeit einen Plattenvertrag mit Nuclear Blast abgeschlossen. Im Zuge dessen hat man eine Neuauflage der ersten SEPULTURA-EP “Bestial Devastation” (1985) sowie des nachfolgenden Debütalbums “Morbid Visions” (1986) herausgebracht. Beide Platten haben die Cavalera-Brüder hierfür komplett neu eingespielt. Jetzt gibt es mit dem Lyric-Video “Necromancer” einen weiteren Tracks daraus zu hören.

Einen Vorgeschmack gibt es zudem mittels des animierten Musikvideos “Troops of Doom” bei YouTube. Reinhören ist außerdem in die Neuaufnahme von “Morbid Visions” sowie in das Lyric-Video “Bestial Devastation” bei YouTube möglich.

Max Cavalera erklärt:

“[…]Wir haben ‘Bestial Devastation’ und ‘Morbid Visions’ mit dem fantastischen Sound von HEUTE neu aufgenommen, aber mit ihrem rohen und zeitlosen Geist. Das Artwork spiegelt die Zeit wider, in der wir gerade leben…. Apokalyptisch wie die Hölle! Wir haben auch zwei neue Tracks mit Riffs aus jenen Tagen, die wir im Gedächtnis behalten haben.”

Produziert wurden beide Veröffentlichungen von Max und Iggor Cavalera selbst, die Aufnahmen leitete John Aquilino und Mix sowie Mastering übernahm Arthur Rizk. Die Artworks gestaltete Eliran Kantor. Ein Release-Termin steht aktuell noch aus.

Die Alternative Metal-Band EMIL BULLS präsentiert ihre neue Single “Whirlwind Of Doom” mit einem Clip bei YouTube.

Erst im September verkündete die Gruppe, einen Plattenvertrag mit Arising Empire abgeschlossen zu haben. Die erste Single unter dem neuen Label trägt den Titel “The Devil Made Me Do It” und ist als Video bei YouTube abrufbereit.

Die Power Metal-Band SONS OF ETERNITY hat einen Labeldeal bei Massacre Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Deutschen ihr neues Album “End Of Silence” veröffentliche – die zweite Single “Media Zombies” gibt’s als Clip bei YouTube.

“End Of Silence” ist das erste Album der Band und befasst sich mit den Problemen der Zivilisation des 21. Jahrhunderts. Erscheinen wird die Platte am 8. Dezember 2023.

Zeitgeist Zero have released their fourth album, “Meddling With The Forces”. Musically the album incorporates electronics and alternative rock, but containing a series of tracks with varied musical styles and thematic lyrics.

The band has produced a limited edition CD digipak which includes a fold-out lyric sheet that doubles as an Ouija board and an accompanying CD planchette. The band has also released video singles directed by band member Teresa, which serve as a visual complement to the album’s music.

Meddling With The Forces by ZEITGEIST ZERO

Two tracks from “Meddling With The Forces” are featured in the film “How To Kill Monsters”, which premiered at Frightfest in Leicester Square, London, in August 2023.

Zeitgeist Zero has also distributed a music video for their song “Toxic Twisted” on YouTube. The video portrays a narrative consistent with the album’s themes.
