Aramara Quintos Tapia, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, has launched a new post-punk project named Ex Lover. Their debut full-length album, Devotion, is a unique blend of bratty lyrics, moody basslines, and twinkling guitars, showcasing a distinctive style that marks their head-turning entry into the music scene. This combination of sound and vision indicates a fresh take on the post-punk oeuvre, infusing it with a mix of attitude, deep rhythmic elements, and melodic intricacies.

“Devotion, to me, is a cocktail of all the self-destructive behaviors and emotions I’ve experienced through the last couple of years of my life,
says Tapia. “I wanted to present very real feelings of impulsiveness, angst, and the constant yearning for attention and adoration from others. These songs were created within a fantasy world in my head where I let myself fall into my own delusions, and Ex Lover allows me to process them without shame.”

The album opens with All The Pieces, depicting a complex relationship marked by attraction, caution, and power dynamics. This narrative is intertwined with themes of caution, as indicated by not wanting to be touched in front of others and keeping nails long for potential defense, portraying a guarded and ready stance in the face of potential conflict or intimacy. Next comes Dancefloor, a song about confidence, flirtation and allure, painting a picture of someone who is confident, playful, and in control of their romantic encounters. The Spanish language Las Ganas de Llorar expresses a deep sense of sadness and frustration in a troubled relationship. Repetitive patterns bring weekly sorrow, negative thoughts, the constant urge to cry, and a sense of guilt.  The lyrics convey a mix of despair, weariness, and a desperate desire for emotional peace and change.

A passionate relationship, with the deep longing for a partner at all times, comes out in the next track, Favorite Time Of Day. They explore the complexities of desire, discretion, and emotional connection, with a playful undercurrent. When I See You, channeling a spookier Bangles and Go-Gos, explores themes of independence and spontaneity, emphasizing self-confidence and a desire for freedom. The speaker’s focus on dancing alone, feeling exhilarated and self-assured, is coupled with a casual approach to relationships and the continuous pursuit of joy.

El Fin (The End) is another Spanish anthem, details a yearning for a lasting, passionate relationship, using dance as a metaphor for commitment and love. Conversely, Too Late laments the end of a relationship, where a man’s love and pleas for forgiveness are too late to reconcile with his partner. Despite his efforts, she has moved on, feeling detached and out of place. Why Me follows this more introspective, melancholic theme. Make Believe reflects defiance and frustration, resisting unfair blame, and expressing weariness with repetitive challenges.

The album closes with Life of the Party, depicting someone feeling out of place at a fête, seeking connection but feeling unwelcome. They apologize for causing a stir and express a desire for friendship or romance, despite self-doubt and a sense of exclusion.

Die Thrash Metal / Crossover-Band URAL hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Heritage” mit “Blood Red Sand” nun auch ein Lyric-Video ihres aktuellen Albums “Psychoverse” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Party with the Wolves” (2016) und “Just for Fun” (2019) das dritte Album der Italiener aus Turin.

“Psychoverse” wurde gemeinsam mit Davide Billia (BEHEADED) im Mk2 Recording Studio aufgenommen und ist am 10. Oktober 2023 via Xtreem Music erschienen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Luca Martinotti (u.a. für TYTUS tätig).

Since its inception in 2022, Dresden’s <a href="https://www.cold-hearted-festival.de/">Cold-Hearted Festival</a> has quickly become an essential annual event in the European darkwave music scene, selling out for two consecutive years. Returning in 2024, it continues to uphold its reputation as one of the best single-day festivals in Europe for darkwave and post-punk music. This year’s lineup is as compelling as ever. The festival’s 2024 edition is now multicity, scheduled for November 15th at Bochum Matrix and November 16th at Dresden Alter Schlachthof.

British-Swiss/German duo <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lebanonhanover/?hl=en">Lebanon Hanover</a> leads the pack of first announcements of next year’s festival lineup, bringing their iconic coldwave-influenced post-punk sound. They are joined by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/linea_aspera_/?hl=en">Linea Aspera</a>, who have captivated audiences with their darkwave and EBM style since their 2019 reunion.

Twin Tribes, hailing from Texas, brings a distinct atmosphere to the international music scene with their Mexican-American-influenced darkwave music. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/rendezvousrendezvous/?hl=en">Rendez-Vous</a>, based in Paris, is back with a new album and their lively brand of post-punk. And <a href="https://www.instagram.com/rueoberkampf.band/?hl=en">Rue Oberkampf</a>, an electro band from Germany, is all set to blend 1980s dark wave with modern techno to create a captivating dance driven sound.

The festival also features rising stars like Brussels-based <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ultrasunn/?hl=en">Ultra Sunn</a>, whose “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” has already become a club staple, along with Berlin’s <a href="https://www.instagram.com/deusexluminaofficial/?hl=en">Deus Ex Lumina</a> and Parisian synth mastermind <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sydney_valette/?hl=en">Sydney Valette</a>. Rounding out the initial announcement of the festival lineup is the Greek dark synth-wave duo <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kaltenacht_/?hl=en">Kalte Nacht</a>, known for their evocative sounds and dark lyricism.

With its track record of sold-out shows and a lineup that spans the spectrum of darkwave and post-punk, Cold-Hearted Festival 2024 is poised to be an unmissable event for fans across Europe and beyond. Zur aktuellen Besetzung von BONDED gehören neben Bernemann (Ex-SODOM) und Christian “Speesy” Giesler (Ex-KREATOR) Schlagzeuger Corny Rambado (Ex-ONKEL TOM), Gitarrist Marco Stützer (Ex-FRANTIC) und Sänger Manuel Bigus (BLODTÅKE; PATH OF GOLCONDA).

“Mit Marco haben wir einen starken, absolut versierten Gitarristen in unseren Reihen. Und Manuel ist live einfach eine Wucht, er bringt die Songs astrein rüber und gibt Vollgas, als ob es kein Morgen gibt! Wir sind froh, die beiden an Bord zu haben. Es ist noch einiges in der Pipeline. Wir haben einfach unglaublich viel Bock, den Leuten etwas zurückzugeben, nach so viel Zeit des Stillstandes.”, kommentiert  Bernemann das neue Line-up.

BONDED gründeten sich 2018, das erste Album der Thrash Metal-Band trägt den Titel “Rest in Violence” und erschien Anfang 2020. Das zweite Album “Into Blackness” wurde Ende 2021 veröffentlicht.

Bernemann: “Jetzt können wir die Platten auch live vorstellen, endlich. Umso schöner, dass die Reaktionen während und nach den Shows wirklich mehr als positiv waren! Wir freuen uns über den frischen Wind im Rücken.”

The Jesus and Mary Chain are revving up for an exciting new year with the release of their upcoming album “Glasgow Eyes” on March 8th, via Fuzz Club. Not ones to rest on their laurels (or perhaps just allergic to idleness), the duo, comprising the Reid brothers – Jim and William – have also unveiled their lead single “jamcod,” in a move that’s both a nod to their roots and a wink at the future. It’s as if they’ve taken their trademark style, given it a good shake, and flung it headfirst into the 21st century, with a sprinkle of futuristic Britpop for good measure.

In jamcod, dizzying electronica cozies up to William Reid’s gargantuan guitar riffs like old friends at a high school reunion. Meanwhile, at the track’s core, Jim Reid’s vocals swing between chant and call to arms, as if he’s leading a ritual to conjure the spirit of ’90s alt-rock. The result? A song that’s part throwback, part trailblazer – and all Jesus and Mary Chain. It’s a reassuring reminder that while the brothers might be celebrating four decades in the game, they’re not just spinning their wheels. They’re burning rubber and leaving a trail of revitalized, yet comfortably familiar, tunes in their wake.

“Hopefully people will expect a Jesus and Mary Chain record, and that’s certainly what Glasgow Eyes is,” says Jim Reid. “Our creative approach is remarkably the same as it was in 1984, just hit the studio and see what happens. We went in with a bunch of songs and let it take its course. There are no rules, you just do whatever it takes. And there’s a telepathy there – we are those weird not-quite twins that finish each other’s sentences.”

jamcod is accompanied by a video directed by Ben Unwin, who has conjured up a visual counterpart to the track that cleverly interweaves stock footage with shots of the band. The result is a glitchy, lo-fi transmission that echoes the song’s ethos perfectly. This kaleidoscope of imagery that feels like flipping through a particularly artsy, slightly off-kilter television channel.  In this video, Unwin both captures and amplifies the essence of the band, turning what could have been a straightforward performance into a mesmerizing collage that’s as rebellious and unconventional as JAMC itself.

At Mogwai’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow, a place that might sound more like a lair for a comic book villain than a recording space, The Jesus and Mary Chain have been busy. Here, Jim and William Reid have been stitching together their latest opus, Glasgow Eyes. This endeavour follows the smooth sailing that brought their 2017 album, Damage and Joy, to the spotlight as their most successful record in two decades.

What’s cooking this time, you ask? Glasgow Eyes marries their signature blend of sweet melody and searing feedback with a more profound homage to their musical inspirations like Suicide and Kraftwerk. Adding a pinch of spice to an already flavourful dish, there’s also a newfound zest for the spontaneous side of jazz. The Jesus and Mary Chain are watering their roots with something entirely fresh.

From the incendiary Psychocandy debut and its classic single Just Like Honey onwards, the Reid brothers steadily became the misfits who made good without ever compromising their sound or identity. They’ve returned to their legacy in recent years, with this year’s live album Sunset 666, reissues of the Munki, Damage and Joy and Live At Barrowlands albums on Fuzz Club, plus a limited edition 7” single release for Third Man Records.

The Reid brothers are strapping in for a tour that’s less of a routine jaunt and more of a triumphant parade across the UK and EU in 2024: a celebration of endurance and evolution. As they prepare to hit the road, they’re set to relive, reimagine, and rejoice in a storied career that’s spanned decades, influenced generations…and now, finds them at a creative zenith.

In addition to its digital release, physical formats include CD, vinyl and a 45 rpm double-vinyl with a gatefold sleeve. Fans who pre-order Glasgow Eyes here will receive access to a pre-sale for tour tickets, which opens at 11am GMT today and will be open until remaining tickets go on general sale from 10am GMT on Friday, December 1st.

The album’s first single, “jamcod,” welds dark electronica with the guitar sound of William Reid. You can check out the video here.

“Glasgow Eyes” was recorded at Mogwai’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow, where the brothers Jim and William Reid continued the creative process that resulted in their previous album, 2017’s “Damage and Joy”. The duo incorporated their love for Suicide and Kraftwerk and – surprise – jazz. Jim Reid elaborates, “But don’t expect ‘the Mary Chain goes jazz.’ People should expect a Jesus and Mary Chain record, and that’s certainly what Glasgow Eyes is. Our creative approach is remarkably the same as it was in 1984, just hit the studio and see what happens. We went in with a bunch of songs and let it take its course. There are no rules, you just do whatever it takes. And there’s a telepathy there – we are those weird not-quite twins that finish each other’s sentences.”

“Glasgow Eyes” will be available on CD and on single vinyl. For those who love the sound of vinyl at its purest, there will be a limited edition 45 rpm double-vinyl packaged with artwork by William Reid.

Zum 30-jährigen Jubiläum von "Forest Enter Exit" veröffentlichen Deine Lakaien eine neue Auflage ihres Klassikeralbums, inklusive der EP "Mindmachine". Das Album ist als schwarze und als streng limitierte silberne Doppelvinyl im Gatefold verfügbar, außerdem gibt es eine Doppel-CD im Digisleeve.
Das Thema des Albums hat an Aktualität nichts eingebüßt. "Forest Enter Exit" handelt von Traum und Wirklichkeit. Traum und Wirklichkeit sind Bilder, die im Gehirn entstehen und vom Charakter des Einzelnen geformt werden. Ausbruchsversuche wie Drogen, Mindmachines und Cyber-Welten werden daran nichts ändern, im Gegenteil, nur die Vereinsamung beschleunigen.
Die neun Songs auf "Forest Enter Exit" führen durch die verschiedensten Winkel sublimer Träume und menschlicher Vorstellungskraft. Ausflüge in virtuelle Realitäten enden in nüchternem Alltagsgrau, um von dort sofort wieder in die schillernden Welten längst vergangener Zeiten entführt zu werden. Ein ganz persönlicher Audio-Trip zwischen Schein und Sein.
Entsprechend der thematischen Vielfalt werden auf "Forest Enter Exit" verschiedenste Musikrichtungen in typischer Lakaien-Manier miteinander verbunden. "Forest Enter Exit" ist ein weiterer Beweis für die musikalische Eigenständigkeit der Band.

VEMOD sind alles andere als eine Durchschnittsband. Die Norweger existieren vielmehr in musikalischen und lyrischen Grenzbereichen. Das zweite Album des Trios, "The Deepening", ist aus demselben tonalen Granit gemeißelt, aus dem schon der Vorgänger "Venter på stormene" vor über einem Jahrzehnt geschlagen wurde. Das klangliche Grundgestein lagert im Ort Namsos, wo VEMOD um die Jahrhundertwende vom damals 12-jährigen Jan Even Åsli als lebenslanges Projekt aus musikalischer Leidenschaft ins Leben gerufen wurden. Die nächstgelegene Großstadt ist Trondheim, wo die eigenwillige lokale Nidrosian Black Metal Szene, die sich auf den ursprünglichen Namen der Stadt bezieht, die ersten musikalischen Bezugspunkte für VEMOD lieferte – wie das erste Demo "Kringom fjell og skog" (2004) eindeutig belegt.

Als die Norweger sieben Jahre später mit dem Track "Moestæ Qverelæ" auf einer Split-Single sowie dem Demo "Vinterilden" im Jahr 2011 erneut auftauchten, hatten sie sich signifikant verändert. Das Trio hatte Elemente verstärkt, die schon zuvor vorhanden waren: Eine Prise Erhabenheit, die an frühe IN THE WOODS... erinnert, ein Schuss Melancholie und eine Messerspitze introvertierter Kontemplation inmitten einer breiten Palette emotionaler und dunkelfarbiger Klangbilder. VEMODs musikalischer Wandel findet Parallelen in der Entwicklung der französischen Brüder im Geiste, ALCEST, obwohl es in beide Richtungen keinen direkten Einfluss gab. Im Nachhinein können die Norweger als Vorreiter für aktuell so populäre Stile wie Blackgaze und Post-Black Metal gelten, obwohl sie sich beides nie auf ihre Fahne geschrieben haben. Mit ihrem Debütalbum "Venter på stormene" öffneten VEMOD im Jahr 2012 ihre Musik für neue Orte: Auf einen denkwürdigen Auftritt beim renommierten Beyond the Gates Festival in Bergen im Jahr 2013 folgte die legendäre Show im Vigeland Mausoleum beim Osloer Inferno Festival, die ein Jahr später VEMODs exzellenten Ruf sogar jenseits des Atlantiks zementierte.

"The Deepening" kommt nun mit einer veränderten Produktion daher, die ein neues Klangbild erzeugt, ohne sich von den Wurzeln der Band zu lösen. Auch stilistisch beschreiten die Norweger neue Wege, indem sie ihrem Sound weitere Elemente hinzufügen. Die lyrischen Themen, die sich durch "The Deepening" ziehen, erzählen von Veränderung, Vergänglichkeit, Transformation und Wachstum. "The Deepening" will die Möglichkeit bieten, lang gehegte Überzeugungen und tröstliche Illusionen zu überwinden. Wahrheit kann schmerzen. Und eine Wahrheit ist, dass an der Wegkreuzung, die VEMODs zweites Album erreicht hat, ein vertieftes Verständnis ihrer musikalischen Welt wartet.

Du hast ein sonniges Gemüt, egal ob es gerade arschkalt ist oder es schneit und du hast noch Sommerreifen drauf? Dann bist du bei KING FALCON genau richtig! Das New Yorker Indie-Rock Trio aus Queens macht sich mit dem selbstbetitelten Debütalbum auf, auch Europa zu erobern.

KING FALCON lassen Teenies ausgelassen tanzen und gereifte Altrocker gemütlich mitschunkeln
Vor dem geistigen Auge sieht man schnell Teenies ausgelassen tanzen und hüpfen, gereifte Altrocker schunkeln aber auch gemütlich mit. Die Jungs haben es jedenfalls drauf, dass die Songs Laune machen und man nicht stillsitzen mag wie bereits beim ironischen Opener „Everybody’s Down“. Mag es moderner Indie Rock genannt werden, man rockt sich trotzdem durch allerlei Oldschool-Garage-Vibes, packt auch mal noch etwas Punk mit rein. Man tänzelt mit, „Ready Set Go“ sagt es ja schon im Titel. „Cadillac“ vertont die Freude am Autofahren, „Set Me Free“ kommt mit einem verdammt coolen Groove daher.

Man fühlt sich immer wieder an Bands erinnert wie THE STROKES, THE HIVES und andere Oldschool-Rockbands. Und trotzdem hat man immer das Gefühl, eine junge, aktuelle Band zu hören. KING FALCON machen geschickt und unangestrengt das Beste aus beiden Welten. Alles kommt mit einer angenehmen Naivität, erinnert damit etwas an L.A. EDWARDS.  Derweil tänzelt man weiter zum lustigen „Rabbit Gets The Gun“ durch die Hütte, „Soul Sucker“ bringt fast Strandbar-Feeling, „Ride“ kommt wieder mit einer Portion Teenie-Punk. So geht es locker flockig mit kurzen, knackigen Songs durchs Album bis zum etwas ruhigeren „Go On“. Das Album ist ratzfatz vorbei, aber man geht gern wieder zurück auf Start.

KING FALCON zitieren Oldschool-Indie-Bands und klingen trotzdem modern
Moderner Oldschool-Indie Rock passt wohl irgendwie. KING FALCON bringen den alten Indie/Garage Rock entspannt ins jetzt, klingen nie betont modern, aber trotzdem zeitgemäß. Das unterstützt die gute Produktion, welche die Instrumente herrlich nach Proberaum klingen und in der Summe doch kraftvoll aus den Boxen schieben lässt. Die softe Stimme von Michael Rubin bringt jugendliches Flair rein, sein entspanntes Gitarrenspiel hat er bei Guitar Hero gelernt, die Kollegen liefern ein passendes Fundament.

Ähnliche Bands gibt es genug, mit etwas Pusch eventuell mit Liveshows dürften sich KING FALCON in der passenden Szene sicher einen Namen machen.

From the other side of the globe, in a place known for nurturing a bad seed or two in its fertile post-punk soil, emerges the enigmatic Australian outfit Sacred Hearts. Their music, deeply tied to vocalist June Gray’s upbringing amidst religious symbolism and instruction, resonates with a profound and personal connection. Their formation is a story of chance meetings and shared backgrounds: June and Josie, both products of Catholic education, found a musical kinship that sparked the creation of Sacred Hearts. Mit “I am the Void” wird in einigen Tagen die neue EP der Power Metal-Band JUDICATOR erscheinen. Die Scheibe folgt dem 2022er-Album “The Majesty of Decay” nach und umfasst neben dem neunminütigen Titeltrack auch das BLIND GUARDIAN-Cover “The Curse of Feanor”.

“I am the Void” wurde von Carlos Alvarez (POWER THEORY, SHADOWDANCE) gemixt und von Brett Caldas-Lima (KALISIA) gemastert. Erscheinen wird die EP, welche mit einem Cover-Artwork von Marc Whisnant (u.a. für HELION PRIME tätig) ausgestattet wurde, am 8. Dezember 2023.

Out on 23 February 2024 on Dependent Records is the all new Kirlian Camera album “Radio Signals for the Dying”. Included on this album are also Julian Assange speech excerpts. Julian Assange is the Australian editor, publisher, and activist who founded WikiLeaks in 2006. Assange has been confined in HM Prison Belmarsh in London since April 2019, as the United States government’s extradition effort is contested in the British courts.

“Radio Signals for the Dying” furthermore includes the band’s interpretation of Depeche Mode’s “Wrong” and the song “Winter” from The Sound. From a collaboration with Solitary Experiment comes Kirlian Camera’s take on “The Great Unknown”, which Solitary Experiment previously released in an own version with vocals contributed by Elena Alice Fossi.

The recording line-up consisted of Elena Alice Fossi and Angelo Bergamini augmented with bass player Mia W. Wallace and cello player Terri Harrison. The band’s current live line-up consists of Elena Alice Fossi, Angelo Bergamini, Mia W. Wallace, Alessandro Comerio and Thalìa Bellazecca.

Die Melodic Death / Drama Metal-Band GOTHONY wird in einigen Wochen ihr neues Album “Gothony” veröffentlichen. Es ist der erste Release der Finnen seit ihrem Comeback. Mitte der 90er-Jahre hat die Band aus Helsinki bereits zwei Demos veröffentlicht.

“Gothony”, das von Juho Räihä bei SoundSpiral Audio gemixt und gemastert wurde, wird am 12. Januar 2024 via Inverse Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es mit “Patient 2442” – mit Gast-Sängerin Kata Samula – eine erste Single mitsamt Video-Clip.

Das gab es vorher noch nicht. Aus der Idee von zwei erfolgreichen und etablierten Bands entstand ein erstes erfolgreiches Live-Experiment. Die gemeinsame Leidenschaft für elektronische Musik sollte miteinander verschmelzen und ein neues Konzerterlebnis formen. Die erste Liveshow von ELECTROMANIAX im Kulttempel in Oberhausen im September 2023 hat eindrucksvoll bewiesen und gezeigt, dass diese Show keine Eintagsfliege sein kann. Der Abend und die Reaktionen und Emotionen der Fans und Besucher hat Bands und Fans dermaßen überwältigt, dass direkt im Anschluss die Entscheidung getroffen wurde, das Projekt weiterzuführen, die Show weiter auszubauen und einem breiteren Publikum zu präsentieren. Nun gehen die Electro-Band ROTERSAND und die Electropop-Band FROZEN PLASMA mit diesem Konzept im Frühjahr 2024 auf Clubtour.

Ihr habt keine Lust auf fröhliches Glöckchengebimmel und aufgesetzte Besinnlichkeit? TARJA hat die Lösung in Form ihres neuen, zweiten „Weihnachts“-Albums. „Dark Christmas“ entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit ihrem Team Jim Dodey, Mic und Tim Palmer. Die Nacht ist dunkel, frostig, nix mit herzerwärmendem Lichterglanz und Tralala.

TARJAs „Dark Christmas“ verbreitet frostig-düstere Besinnlichkeit
Es könnte so besinnlich sein verheißt der Auftakt zu „The First Noel“. Halleluja, dann wird es düster, langsam, theatral. Bedrohlich baut sich das Lied auf, die Stimme von TARJA passt natürlich perfekt. Wer die charismatische Sängerin und ihre operesken Vocals mag, der fühlt sich herrlich unwohl. Wie auch beim kalten Kumpel „Frosty The Snowman“. Auch hier geht es bedrohlich zu, Frosty hat nichts am verschneiten Hut mit Frozen-Olaf, eher mit einem schlecht gelaunten Eisriesen. Vieles auf „Dark Christmas“ hat was von dunklen Soundtracks zu den entsprechenden Zeichentrickfilmen. So präsentiert sich TARJA in geschmackvoller passender Aufmachung irgendwo zwischen Eiskönigin Elsa und der bösen Stiefmutter Angelina Jolie in “Maleficent – Die dunkle Fee”. Das zieht sich durch das geschmackvolle Booklet und die Videos, so bietet sich „Dark Christmas“ allein optisch schon an als Goodie zu Nikolaus an.

Man erkennt, dass die Version der Lieder mit mehr Instrumenten und mehr Wucht auch auf ein reguläres TARJA-Rockalbum gepasst hätten
Wer mit TARJA nichts anfangen kann, der rast mit seinem Schlitten bereits Richtung rettenden Sonnenaufgang, angetrieben vom dramatischen Beat von „Holy Night“. Der Titelsong „Dark Christmas“ klingt wie ein Weihnachtslied für die MONO INC.-Fraktion, „Jingle Bell Rock“ rockt wieder bedrohlich, aufgehübscht von zarten Musical-Momenten. Das durchzieht das ganze Album, es bleibt immer theatral, mal schieben Streicher oder gewollt monoton gehaltene Metal-Gitarren die Dunkelheit nach vorn, mal verbreiten Kindergesänge Unschuld und Hoffnung. Immer wieder erkennt man, dass die Version der Lieder wie später „Jingle Bell Rock“ mit mehr Instrumenten und mehr Wucht auch auf ein reguläres TARJA-Rockalbum gepasst hätten.

Kitschklassiker werden auf „Dark Christmas“ zerlegt in ein düsteres Soundgewand
So ziehen die Weihnachtsklassiker durch den Frostinator gejagt durch die Nacht. Fast unvermeidbar werden auch die bekannten Weihnachtsschocker vertont, vor denen jeder Autoradiohörer das ganze Jahr Angst hat. Ohne aufgesetzt fröhliches Gebimmel kommt MARIAH CAREYs „All I Want For Christmas Is You“ daher. Man hat nicht den Eindruck, dass sich hier irgendwer auf irgendwen freut. Auch bei „Laaaast Christmas“ kommt keinerlei Fröhlichkeit oder Liebesgeschwurbel auf, der Kitschklassiker wird zerlegt in ein düsteres Soundgewand. So geht es weiter bis zum atmosphärischen Schlusstrack „Angels We Have Heard On High“.

TARJA-Fans werden sich wohlfühlen mit diesem „Weihnachtsalbum“
Wer TARJA nicht mag, und das sind ja doch einige, der ist schon lange weg. Fans der Sängerin hingegen werden sich wohlfühlen mit diesem „Weihnachtsalbum“. Die Stimmung ist düster, die Stimme der Finnin passt perfekt zur theatralen Umsetzung. Die Produktion ist groß aufgelegt, der Sound lädt ein, bei passender Lautstärke auch die Nachbarn an der düsteren Besinnlichkeit teilhaben zu lassen. Alles klingt stimmig und durchdacht, manchmal ein wenig zu sehr nach Studioprojekt.

Dass die Songs nicht darauf zu reduzieren sind, das zeigt TARJA Anfang Dezember auch bei uns live:

Cave more specifically addressed fans’ inquiries about ChatGPT’s impact on human creativity. The backdrop of these questions is the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and its implications, highlighted by ongoing developments at OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT.

Nick Cave, known for his engagement with fans through The Red Hand Files – his interactive blog forum – recently (August 2023) responded to two fans, Leon and Charlie, about the use of ChatGPT in creative processes. In his reply, Cave expressed deep skepticism about the increasing reliance on AI for artistic creation.

At the Letters Live event which took place on November 16th, marking its 10th anniversary, at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Fry read Cave’s letter during the second part (“We are fighting for the very soul of the world”) of his speech, emphasizing the musician’s concerns about AI’s role in the arts. Letters Live is renowned for its celebration of literary correspondence, featuring a variety of performers reading significant historical and contemporary letters.

Am 9. Februar 2024 erscheint “Echoes Of Light”, das neue Album von CHAPEL OF DISEASE.  Heute (28. November 2023) wird um 19.30 die erste Single “‘A Death Through No Loss” bei YouTube veröffentlicht.

“Echoes Of Light”, entstand zwischen Oktober 2022 und Januar 2023 in den Q7 Studios mit Michael Zech in der Besetzung Laurent T., Cedric T. und David D. – die Wege der Musiker trennten sich im Anschluss, die Band macht aber offenbar in neuer Besetzung weiter. Für 2024 sind unter anderem Auftritte beim BRAINCRUSHER IN HELL, DARK EASTER METAL MEETING und 20 YEARS NEW EVIL MUSIC FESTIVAL angekündigt.

Rund 6000 Leute fasst das Münchner Zenith und fast ebenso viele haben sich an einem frostigen Donnerstagabend angekündigt, um die Deathcore-Größe LORNA SHORE auf deren „Pain Remains“-Tour durch Europa live zu erleben. Um zu verstehen, wie absurd diese Zahl eigentlich ist, müssen wir den Blick aber zunächst zurückrichten. Erst im August des vorherigen Jahres spielten die US-Amerikaner im Vorprogramm AS I LAY DYINGs im hiesigen Backstage Werk vor knapp einem Viertel der Leute, stand dann auf dem SUMMER BREEZE OPEN AIR 2022 um 12 Uhr mittags auf der Bühne und eröffnete im Herbst für PARKWAY DRIVE die „Viva The Underdogs“-Tour.

Die Sphären, in welchen sich LORNA SHORE nun bewegen, sind somit auf den ersten Blick nur schwer zu fassen, gerade weil die Show in der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage gleich zweimal hochverlegt wurde und man im Gegenzug zu manch anderer Tournee dieser Tage zwar ein hochwertiges, aber kaum über die Maße zugkräftiges Support-Paket im Schlepptau hat. RIVERS OF NIHIL, INGESTED sowie DISTANT versprechen natürlich trotzdem einen krachenden Auftakt, den sich ein guter Teil der früh angereisten Besucher:innen folglich auch nicht entgehen lassen will.

DISTANT

Unsere einzige Sorge um halb sieben: die berüchtigt schwierigen Soundverhältnisse im Zenith, welche gerade im Fall des heutigen Line-ups schnell zum Albtraum werden könnte. So weit wollen wir zu Beginn des Abends aber noch gar nicht denken, denn die Stimmung in der Halle ist ausgesprochen losgelöst. Die kauzige „Spongebob Schwammkopf“-Titelmelodie singen die Fans daher lauthals wie textsicher mit, bevor DISTANT ihrem Intro das größtmögliche Kontrastprogramm folgen lassen.

„The Eternal Lament“ trifft zum Auftakt mit der Wucht eines Vierzigtonners, wobei insbesondere die schleppenden Breakdowns einen ungefähren Vorgeschmack dessen geben, was im Laufe der kommenden vier Stunden zu erwarten sein wird. Vom Circle Pit in „Oedipism“ bis hin zum unwiderstehlichen Groove von „Born of Blood“ bieten sich den Münchner:innen eine halbe Stunde lang zahlreiche Optionen, die eingerosteten Gelenke schon frühzeitig wieder in Betrieb zu nehmen.

DISTANT setzen auf mächtige Deathcore-Walzen

Dem kommen wir auch gerne nach, obwohl der Audiomix in diesen Anfangsminuten noch etwas wechselhaft gerät. Gerade die atmosphärisch so wichtigen Synth-Spuren des aktuellen Materials gehen zwischen Bass und Schlagzeug etwas unter. Den Spaß trübt das jedoch glücklicherweise nur geringfügig, schließlich bleibt das mächtige Rückgrat der Deathcore-Walzen durch einen solchen Makel weitestgehend unberührt. Dementsprechend ist die Begeisterung der Fans nicht nur zu spüren, sondern gar deutlich zu hören, als DISTANT-Frontmann Alan Grnja den Titeltrack des aktuellen Werks „Heritage“ (2023) ankündigt. Der in manchen Ecken der Halle still herbeigesehnte Gastauftritt Will Ramos‘ (LORNA SHORE) muss diesmal zwar Wunschdenken bleiben, zum Höhepunkt des knackigen Sets wird der Track dank der mächtigen Darbietung der Niederländer aber auch ohne zusätzliche Starpower.

INGESTED

Als eine gute Viertelstunde später bereits zum zweiten Mal am heutigen Tag die Lichter ausgehen, ist es vor der Bühne reichlich eng geworden. Schon DISTANT-Shouter Alan Grnja blickte kurz zuvor etwas ungläubig auf die Masse vor ihm, die nun abermals durch eine Ladung (Slam-)Death in Wallung gerät. Dabei profitiert das dargebotene Material INGESTEDs vom mittlerweile gut ausdifferenzierten Sound, welcher der Lead-Gitarre genügend Raum zum Atmen gibt.

Dadurch kann das Quartett bei aktuellen Stücken à la „Shadows In Time“ ebenso auf den Rückhalt des Publikums zählen wie bei Kompositionen mittleren Semesters, wo sich etwa in „Invidious“ früh ein Circle Pit bildet. Dass Jason Evans‘ Wunsch nach einer Wall of Death in „Skinned And Fucked“ bereitwillig in die Tat umgesetzt wird, dürfte daher ebenso wenig überraschen.

Immerhin zeigt der sympathische Sänger seinerseits eine makellose wie gallige Performance, welcher er dank der herrlich schräg gerollten Screams einen unverkennbaren Stempel aufdrückt. Eigentlich schade, dass das unnachgiebige „Echoes Of Hate“ nach einer kurzweiligen halben Stunde bereits das Ende markiert – die Kraftreserven in der Halle hätten sicherlich noch für eine weitere Nummer gereicht.

RIVERS OF NIHIL

Ans Limit kommt das Zenith im Folgenden ebenso wenig, wenn auch aus anderen Gründen. Mit ihrem technischen Progressive Death Metal fallen RIVERS OF NIHIL zwischen den unerbittlichen Hau-Drauf-Kapellen doch ein wenig aus dem Rahmen. Statt von Breakdown zu Blastbeat zu Breakdown zu eilen, setzen die US-Amerikaner zwischen massiven Riff-Walzen auf offene und teils entrückte Passagen, wo in „The Silent Life“ schon mal ein Saxofon als Backing Track mitlaufen darf.

Für gewaltige Moshpits eignet sich das Material also nur bedingt, obgleich die neue Single „Hellbirds“ den Härtegrad zwischendurch anzuziehen weiß und Bassist Adam Biggs die Meute in „Death Is Real“ sogar zu einer Wall of Death animieren kann. Der Songaufbau dahin ist dabei insofern untypisch, als dass RIVERS OF NIHIL die folgende Eruption gar nicht so sehr auszukosten scheinen, wie wir es eigentlich an dieser Stelle erwarten würden.

RIVERS OF NIHIL bringen neue Klang-Facetten in die Halle

Einen Dämpfer versetzt das den Münchner:innen dabei keineswegs, die natürlich genre-bedingt nicht Vollgas geben, aber in „Focus“ doch bereitwillig mitklatschen und dabei die Fingerakrobatik am Griffbrett bestaunen. Das ist eben das unweigerliche Los, vor ein leicht anders gepoltes Publikum zu treten. Immerhin versuchen aber doch beide Seiten zueinanderzufinden, obwohl die Chemie in dieser Dreiviertelstunde nicht zu einhundert Prozent harmonieren will. Wir hingegen genießen das abwechslungsreiche Material dennoch, schließlich bringt der sphärische Klargesang von Gitarrist Andy Thomas und Schlagzeuger Gary Klein in „The Sub-Orbital Blues“ eine ganz neue Klang-Facette ins Zenith, die mit dem fantastischen „Where Owls Know My Name“ ein ebenso rundes Ende findet.

LORNA SHORE

Was sich bereits im Vorprogramm abgezeichnet hat, findet nun um Viertel nach neun seine Bestätigung: Auch LORNA SHORE gelingt das Kunststück, einen klaren und doch mächtigen Soundmix ins Zenith zu zaubern. Dabei fällt der Start aufgrund technischer Komplikationen doch holpriger aus als geplant: So will während des Openers „Welcome Back, O‘ Sleeping Dreamer“ das Mikrofon nicht so recht mitspielen, weshalb Will Ramos gleich mehrfach das Equipment tauschen muss. Der Durchschlagskraft des Stücks tut das derweil keinen Abbruch, zumal die US-Amerikaner auch showtechnisch direkt in die Vollen gehen.

Aus den CO2-Kanonen schießen weißfarbene Fontänen empor, im Hintergrund des gestuften Sets fliegen während des Refrains Funken durch die Luft und stattliche Flammensäulen garnieren die massiven Breakdowns. Im Zusammenspiel mit der abwechslungsreichen wie stimmigen Lightshow gibt es folglich auch einiges fürs Auge, um das unnachgiebige Symphonic-Deathcore-Inferno angemessen in Szene zu setzen. Dass LORNA SHORE ihr showtechnisches Repertoire schon zu Beginn in Gänze offenbaren – zumindest inszenatorisch entwickelt das Quintett im Laufe des Gigs keine Dramaturgie –, soll dabei nicht stören.

Eigentlich haben LORNA SHORE nur Hits im Gepäck

Immerhin sorgt die Setlist selbst für eine sorgsam kurierte Spannungskurve, indem die Band dem Auftakt mit „Of The Abyss“ sowie „…And I Return To Nothingness“ gleich zwei Live-Granaten hinterherschiebt, wobei Frontmann Ramos in Ersterem zeitweilig Unterstützung aus den Niederlanden erhält: DISTANT-Shouter Alan Grnja kehrt für den gedrosselten Breakdown ein zweites Mal auf die Bretter zurück, um das Meer aus Crowdsurfern höchstpersönlich unter die Lupe zu nehmen.

Wobei die Songauswahl eigentlich ohnehin nebensächlich erscheint: LORNA SHORE haben gefühlt sowieso nur Hits im Gepäck, weshalb zu „Sun//Eater“ nicht ganz ohne Grund zahllose Smartphones in die Höhe schießen. Neben der engagierten Band will man wohl auch den kurz darauf losbrechenden Circle Pit auf Video bannen und bekommt sogar noch ein kleines Schmankerl oben drauf, als Bandfotograf Nick Chance die Kamera spontan für ein paar Momente zur Seite legt und stattdessen selbst zum Mikrofon greift.

Als Zugabe präsentieren LORNA SHORE die komplette “Pain Remains”-Trilogie

Die Münchner:innen sind zu diesem Zeitpunkt ohnehin vollkommen in Ekstase, schließlich geben LORNA SHORE heute Abend das eigene Material live und mit beängstigender Routine nahezu makellos wieder. Am liebsten würden wir daher die Augen schließen und genießen, wenn Adam De Micco auf dem Podest am rechten Bühnenrand zu einem seiner verspielten Soli ansetzt. Doch würden wir dann das Spektakel um uns herum verpassen, wo die Fans während „Immortal“, des einzigen Tracks aus der Prä-Ramos-Ära, auf und ab springen, nur um dann den Titel des folgenden „Into The Earth“ über das furiose Schlagzeugspiel Austin Archeys hinwegzubrüllen.

Bis sich LORNA SHORE nach dem umjubelt aufgenommenen Hitsong „To The Hellfire“ erstmals für einen längeren Moment zurückziehen, haben die Münchner:innen also eigentlich ihr Soll schon längst erfüllt. Als Geschenk gibt es mit der „Pain Remains“-Trilogie einen rund 20-minütigen Zugabenblock, der uns natürlich emotional in die Mangel nimmt, aber auch einmal mehr die Songwriting-Qualitäten der Band vor Augen führt. Trauer, Wut, Verzweiflung und Resignation liegen hier nahe beieinander und entladen sich in der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt in einem explosiven Schlussakt, der natürlich auch Frontmann Will Ramos ungemein wandelbares Organ in den Vordergrund rückt.

Die “Pain Remains”-Tour zeigt: LORNA SHORE sind die Band der Stunde

Dass bei diesem während des gesamten Auftritts die Fäden zusammenlaufen, liegt derweil im natürlichen Charisma des Sängers begründet – da zücken wir gerne im Finale „In A Sea Of Fire“ die Smartphone-Lampe, um der bislang größten Headliner-Show LORNA SHOREs zu einem würdigen Ende zu verhelfen. 75 Minuten später fassen wir uns allerdings zunächst ungläubig an den Kopf: Immerhin haben wir hier gerade eine Band erlebt, die noch vor einem Jahr im Vorprogramm zweier einflussreicher Metalcore-Ikonen aufgetreten war und nun mit unbändiger Energie vor fast 6000 Leuten eine Location auseinandergenommen hat, die so manche Metal-Größe nur mit Schützenhilfe vollbekommt. Mussten LORNA SHORE im Sommer 2022 noch zur Mittagszeit auf die Bühne, dürfte der markante Band-Schriftzug demnächst wohl ganz oben auf den Festival-Bannern zu lesen sein.

The video, co-directed by Astrada and Valle Gren, explores the lore of Lux Mala through her music. The song, performed in Spanish, delves into the story of this enigmatic spirit and offers guidance on what one should do if they encounter it.

“I enjoyed being barefoot in the woods, surrounded by pure nature, very tall trees, old big rocks with mold and the purest air I could breathe. I felt like I belong there, I felt like I was at home.”

She draws inspiration from a diverse range of bands including Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Siouxie and The Banshees, and Argentine groups like Virus and Sumo. Her music is a blend of post-punk, goth rock, synth pop, and dark wave, that transcends traditional genre boundaries.

Working from her home studio, Nathalie creates soundscapes characterized by dark tones, gothic elements, danceable bass lines, and atmospheric synthesizers. Her songs are introspective and transgressive, sung in both English and Spanish with a powerful, velvety voice.

ZAKK SABBATH kehren mit einer noch größeren Ladung purer BLACK SABBATH-Verehrung zurück! Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Bestehens der berühmtesten Vier aus Birmingham werden die "Erfinder" des Heavy Metal von dem prominent besetzten Tribute-Trio um Gitarrist und Sänger Zakk Wylde mit dem Doppelalbum "Doomed Forever Forever Doomed" erneut geehrt. Mit dieser liebevollen Hommage liefern die Amerikaner brillante Interpretationen von BLACK SABBATHs zweitem und drittem Album ab, also die klassischen Heavy Metal-Meisterwerken "Paranoid" (1970) und "Master of Reality" (1971). ZAKK SABBATH wurden von BLACK LABEL SOCIETY-Gitarrist und Sänger Zakk Wylde gegründet, der auch als langjähriger Lead-Gitarrist von OZZY OSBOURNE und inzwischen auch noch von PANTERA bekannt ist. Nachdem ZAKK SABBATH anfangs mit wechselnden Mitgliedern nur live auftraten, fand die Band schließlich mit dem OZZY OSBOURNE- und ROB ZOMBIE-Bassisten Blasko und Joey Castillo am Schlagzeug (DANZIG, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE) eine stabile Besetzung. Inspiriert durch das 50-jährige Jubiläum von BLACK SABBATHs selbstbetitelten Debütalbum, veröffentlichten ZAKK SABBATH im Jahr 2020 eine Hommage an diesen monumentalen Heavy Metal-Meilenstein unter dem Titel "Vertigo". Das Album wurde von Kritikern und Fans gleichermaßen mit Lob überhäuft. Das Trio feierte einen weltweiten Erfolg, der sich in beeindruckenden Platzierungen in diversen Charts widerspiegelt: Das Album stieg auf Platz 5 in den US Hard Music Charts, Platz 7 in den Current Rock Albums Charts und Platz 27 in den Billboard Top Album Charts ein. In Frankreich gelang sogar ein Platz 1 in den Metal Album Charts und neben einem Platz 3 in den deutschen Album Charts sowie Platz 9 in den UK Top 40 Rock/Metal Charts finden sich weitere Einträge in anderen Ländern. The death rock/post punk trio The Feral Ghosts will release their sophomore album “Black Sun” via Seeing Red Records on December 8, 2023. “Black Sun” will be available soon in vinyl and will can also be purchased in digital formats on Bandcamp.

The new album is led by the dark electro single “Witcher” which comes accompanied by a video.

The Chicago-based band consists of Raul Urquilla aka Annu Na Kll (vocals, bass), Alejandro Duran (guitar) and Roberto Lopez aka Luzy (drums). They will do a live presentation for “Black Sun” during a hometown show at Soundgrowler Brewing Co. on Saturday, December 2.

The Feral Ghosts formed in the winter of 2014, emerging from Chicago’s late-night scene with a love of post punk and darkwave. The Feral Ghosts’ music can also be heard in the movie, “Appetite for Sin” available on all streaming networks.

Background/Info: Six years after the “Forsaken”-album Mehdi Saleh (aka Alphaxone) and Oleg Puzan (aka Dronny Darko) joined hands again for a new Iranian-Ukrainian collaborative work. Both artists are quite familiar and renowned names from the Cryo Chamber roster and next to having released different solo-works, they also like to collaborate with other artists.

+ + + : Both artists gained a wider recognition while remaining really prolific. This second album between Alphaxone and Dronny Darko sounds more mature and accomplished than its predecessor. We now feel a true harmony resulting in a dense, and apocalyptic atmosphere which is mainly coming through at the beginning of the work. The long, elaborated, and poignant sound waves have been masterly fused together with subtle noises, aquatic field recordings and effects. The tracks are characterized by a slow progression.

– – – : The cuts are becoming a bit predictable during the last part of the work.

Conclusion: This is a successful collaboration between two, talented and visionary artists of the Dark-Cinematic music universe.

AUTUMNBLAZE haben für Anfang  2024 ein neues Album angekündigt: “Auf zerfetzten Schwingen” soll in den ersten Wochen des neuen Jahres via Argonauta Records veröffentlicht werden.

Als erste Single hat das Duo den Song ‘Niedertracht’ inklusive Video bei YouTube geteilt.

“‘Niedertracht’ ist eine unserer größten künstlerischen Schöpfungen. Musik und Texte strömen wie ein ungebändigter Fluss. In dem Song verurteilen wir Krieg und Gewalt  – und wir hoffen, dass diese Message alle erreicht, die in Konflikte verstrickt sind. Wir sind aus einem tiefen Schlummer erwacht und halten einer Welt am Abgrund den Spiegel vor. ‘Niedertracht’ ‘ist ein leidenschaftliches Statement zum aktuellen Zustand der Menschheit.
