Background/Info: Hungarian First Aid 4 Souls remains ultra-prolific already releasing new work. Core member István Gazdag wanted to revisit his Electro-Goth roots and paying ‘tribute to the work of geniuses who laid the foundations of Synth Dark-Wave and to his personal heroes that are Bauhaus and Tones On Tail.’ The EP -which rather looks as a mini-album, features seven songs. Belgian singer ‘Vain Sacrosanct’ (Causenation) sung on five cuts while Canadian-Hungarian female vocalist Linda Daemon (Kr3ll, Black Mamba…) and UK Pop singer Mark Duffield each sang on one song.

The Electro-Wave tribute is accentuated at a few cuts by guitar sounds.

+ + + : Gazdag has already accomplished a meaningful production which sounds different from the ‘traditional’ sound of the project although featuring cool cuts. There also is a true symbiosis between his music and the charismatic vocals of Vain Sacrosanct. My favorite cuts are the ones revealing an explicit EBM touch but there’s also something to say about both debut cuts featuring an ominous atmosphere.

– – – : I can’t say First Aid 4 Souls is too prolific but it sometimes becomes difficult to catch the red line between all the different albums and EPs of the project.

Der The Pogues-Sänger Shane MacGowan ist tot. Das teilte seine Frau mit. MacGowan wurde 65 Jahre alt.

Da wurde mir eine wunderbare Herbst/Winterplatte zugesandt und zwar vom Gitarristen, Keyboarder und kreativen Songschreiber THOMAS GLÖNKLER aus Freiburg, der schon 2010 sein wunderbares Soloalbum „Goldstadt“ präsentiert hatte. Die nun insgesamt 17 Tracks mit 64 Minuten Spielzeit des neuen Albums offenbaren dem geneigten Hörer großartige Klangwelten zwischen Bands wie MARILLION, GROBSCHNITT, NOVALIS, KARAT, CLUSTER, ELOY, STEVEN WILSON und anderen progressiven Prog Rock Künstlern und Gruppen der 70er/80er Jahre ! Die atmosphärischen Lieder klingen äußerst professionell produziert und wurden alle in deutscher Sprache umgesetzt, dazu sagt Thomas auch : „Die deutschen Texte haben sich von selbst ergeben und ich finde das dass das „Dichten“ in der eigenen Muttersprache sehr viel persönlicher und authentischer daher kommt“. Das Konzept der Veröffentlichung geht übrigens auf Bemerkungen des Sohnes vom Thomas zurück, als dieser noch sehr klein war. Da hatte er oft vom Tiefenland erzählt und was er dort so erlebt hatte. Das war der Grund, das sehr persönliche Projekt anzuschieben und es hat stolze 13 Jahre gedauert bis die Platte nun fertig geworden ist, da Thomas seine ganz eigene Vision sehr genau verfolgt und diese verfeinert, verändert, bis das Endergebniss genau seinen hohen Anforderungen entsprach. Daher ist es wohl ein Produkt für die Ewigkeit geworden, würd ich mal vermuten. Die teils poetischen Songs sollte man auch als gesamtes Hörerlebnis wirken lassen, also das Album am Stück komplett genießen. Die Lieder wurden zudem im Blue World Studio Zavelstein aufgenommen und u.a. von Thomas selbst am Keyboard, Gitarre, Bass und mit sehr vielen Gastmusikern erstellt, die mit Mundharmonika, Piano, Harmonica, Saxophon, Horn und Trompete die Lieder mit vollendet haben und es wurde sogar der Schulchor der Schlehengäu Schule Gechingen mit eingesetzt. Die markanten Lead Vocals von ALEX HANAFI tun ihr übrigens zum Gelingen dazu bei. Die CD enthält außerdem ein 16-seitiges Booklet mit allen Texten und allein die Titelnamen wie „Bis zum Himmel“, Die Stille nach dem Schrei“, „Frei Sehn“, „Kleine Seele“, „Die Endlichkeit der Welt“, „Verloren“, „Schattenland“ usw. versprechen intensiven Text und Hörgenuss. Der längste Song vom Album ist „Schattenland“ mit fulminanten 17 Minuten 26 Sek. Auf der exklusiven Bonus CD gibt es noch spannende Studio Outtakes, Instrumentales, Demo Versionen von „Tiefenland“ Songs und Material das bisher noch nicht das Licht der Musik Welt erblickt hatte.  Alles in Allem eine tolle runde Sache und man darf sicher auf weitere Platten von Thomas gespannt sein und eventuell  mal auf eine Liveumsetzung der Tracks im allgemeinen hoffen.

What better time than Yuletide to unleash a song about the apocalypse?
In a bold move befitting the festive season, the enigmatic Spanish post-punk duo CATASTROFE CLUB, hailing from the Roca Umbert Fábrica de les Arts in Granollers, Barcelona, has unleashed a new song about the apocalypse. The duo, comprised of Josep M. Herrera and David Molina, is known for their genre-bending music, blending voices, guitars, and programming with bass, keyboards, and more.

Already known for their three LPs in Spanish, CATASTROFE CLUB is now venturing into new linguistic territory with their first and perhaps first English-language song. This latest stand-alone single marks the culmination of a trilogy of albums, where the band has built a unique world, combining lyrics about synthetic obsession with a distinct visual vocabulary.

CATASTROFE CLUB’s approach to music is unconventional, marked by a mix of tragicomic sensibility, acid sarcasm, and unapologetic ruthlessness, all delivered with a personal sense of humor. Their three LPs showcase an eclectic universe where hypnotic rhythms meet electronic and dark textures, supported by synthetic, incisive lyrics and a striking visual language.

On stage, the band presents a study in contrasts, balancing somber music with subtly comic sarcasm. Embodying a DIY ethos, they control every aspect of their art, from music production to visual identity, album design, show conceptualization, and even producing live videos.

Their latest offering is the video for their new single “The World is Ending,” a surreal discotheque vision from another dimension featuring red-hued dancing girls and pop idols amidst apocalyptic imagery. The video complements the song’s pulsing beats, strumming guitars, and mechanical snare, with vocals that transport listeners to another plane.

CATASTROFE CLUB has been on a relentless roll, dropping three LPs that have carved their own niche in the indie music scene. First came Galletas, released through Molusco Discos in 2015, setting the tone for their distinctive sound. They followed up with Ejercicios de Vision in 2018 under Hidden DIY, showcasing their evolution. Their latest, El crecimiento infinito, dropped in 2022, also under Hidden DIY, cementing their place as a band to watch.

Beyond their studio work, CATASTROFE CLUB has been a fixture on various compilations – from ‘Monotemas’ by La Nada Colectiva to ‘Our Ecosystem‘ by Diffuse Reality, and even featuring on the Dràstik Punkaires compilation. But it’s not just about the records…these guys have been tearing up the live scene too, with around 50 gigs in Barcelona’s coolest spots – think Freedonia, Meteoro, Magia Roja, Heliogàbal, Taro, Continental, and beyond. They’ve rocked stages across Catalonia in venues like Jazz Cava Vic, Konvent Berga, Mister Mojo Tarragona, Els Pagesos Sant Feliu, Dràstik Granollers, and more. Not content with just their home turf, they’ve taken their act to Madrid’s Café la Palma, Fotomatón, Valencia’s Magazine Club, and Pamplona’s Txintxarri. Festival-goers might recognize them from various stints at the Minibeat Festival and Teorema Festival.

CATASTROFE CLUB’s third LP concludes their trilogy, exploring societal collapse with a mix of dark electronic, post-punk, and art-pop. The album, blending intimate atmospheres and danceable rhythms, uses sharp, spoken-word-like lyrics to underscore the fragility of existence in a world teetering on the brink of disaster.

Die Groove / Thrash Metal-Band ETERNAL RETURNS hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Inder ihr neues Album “Hunchback Hatred” veröffentlichen, welches am 8. Dezember 2023 zu erwarten sein wird. Es ist das erste Album der Band, die 2020 mit der EP “Reprieved to Totality” debütierte.

“Die Welt steuert auf eine Katastrophe zu, aber bevor sie den Siedepunkt erreicht, schürt sie langsam den Hass”, erklärt die Band zum Album. “Die intensive Abneigung, jemanden, eine Religion, Gott und eine Kultur zu hassen, kennt keine Grenzen. Unsere Gesellschaft ist deformiert und hat einen Buckel des Hasses in jedem Geist gebildet, der beeinflusst werden kann. “Hunchback Hatred” besteht aus sieben Liedern, die Geschichten über Selbsterkenntnis, Psychospielchen, Kultur und Rache erzählen, die uns als Individuen in diesem von der Gesellschaft gesteuerten Hass noch mehr bestätigen. Die menschliche Anatomie ist der Mechanismus des Hasses und der Zusammenbruch seiner Wirbel ist die Gesellschaft.”

LORD OF THE LOST legen ihren Fans ein Album mit Coversongs unter den Weihnachtsbaum: “Weapons Of Mass Seduction” erscheint am 29. Dezember 2023 über Napalm Records. Zum ROXETTE-Cover “The Look” hat die Gruppe jetzt ein Musikvideo bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Darauf ist außerdem Pop-Sängerin Blümchen als Gast zu hören. Ursprünglich war das Stück bereits auf dem Studioalbum “Blood & Glitter” (2022) zu finden.

Mit einem Musikvideo zu „Shock To The System” stellten LORD OF THE LOST zuvor den ersten Song daraus vor, im Original ist der Song von BILLY IDOL.

LORD OF THE LOST-Sänger Chris Harmserklärt, was ihn an der BILLY IDOL-Nummer fasziniert:

„Ich erinnere mich noch genau, als ich diesen Song das erste Mal hörte. Ich war 13 Jahre alt, es war Sommer und ich saß auf der Rückbank des Opel Manta Cabrios, in dem ich mit meiner älteren Schwester und ihrem Freund zum Freibad fuhr. Selten hat mich die Energie eines einzelnen Songs so gepackt. Ein kleines Stück dieser Energie möchten wir gern mit unserem Tribut an Billy Idol und diesen Song durch unser Cover und das dazugehörige Video zurückgeben.“

Die Idee, ein Coveralbum aufznehmen, kam bereits beim dem letzten Album “Blood & Glitter” auf:

„Bereits während der Produktion von unserem letzten Album Blood & Glitter wurde während der Studiozeit in Finnland, bei den Aufnahmen zu unserem ROXETTE-Cover ‚The Look‘, klar, dass wir hier die Büchse der Pandora geöffnet hatten. Die Energie und der Spaß am Covern von Songs geliebter und respektierter Kollegen und Vorbilder war etwas, dass wir unbedingt weiterführen wollten. So haben wir noch vor der Veröffentlichung von Blood & Glitter angefangen, an dem Projekt ‚Cover-Album‘ zu arbeiten, was für uns das perfekte Dessert zu Blood & Glitter darstellt, bevor wir uns in das Abenteuer stürzen, uns für ein eigenes neues Album erneut selbst zu erfinden.”

Background/Info: Four years after their last album (cf. “Detoxination”) Darkness On Demand (ex-Dance Or Die) are back on track unleashing their third full length album which also is the first one released by the Belgian label Alfa Matrix. The German formation released a few singles and EP as appetizers to this album which is meant as a reconnection with nature and reality, ‘to escape from that digital world dominated by artificial social medias and credit card consumption’.

+ + + : Darkness On Demand didn’t reinvent themselves but simply remind us of the essence and genius of their work; hardly comparable to any other formation and driven now by power and then by beauty… but most of the time it’s just both aspects together. I however prefer the ‘harder’ cuts of the album like “Last Attack”, “Ban Of Truth”, “Reactor 4” and “Lord Of The Harvest”. The powerful and sophisticated Electro is totally matching with the powerful and charismatic vocals of Gary Wagner. There also is a perfect balance between power and catchy, melodic, and carrying choruses. On top you’ll notice subtle sound arrangements.

– – – : I regret the album is not featuring a few more up-tempo cuts but the good news is there’s also a great EP with extra, powerful, songs.

This release is part of his newly reissued The Invisible Man EP, which is available for purchase directly from GeraldVCasale.com.

Casale collaborated with 4D Fun Studios, the video employs an advanced volumetric capture system, creating a 360° virtual CG environment from reality, using 32 digital scanning cameras.

This version of “I’m Gonna Pay U Back” features a ‘Lounge’ style reinterpretation, marking Casale’s first collaboration with Foo Fighters’ new drummer Josh Freese. Shane MacGowan, lead vocalist and songwriter of The Pogues, arrived on earth on Christmas Day in 1957 in Pembury, Kent. His upbringing, heavily influenced by the Irish immigrant experience coupled with a musical family background, significantly shaped his worldview and artistic expression.

As a youth, MacGowan’s early literary gifts earned him a prestigious scholarship, but by his second year he was expelled for possessing drugs in his second year. After briefly considering  joining the priesthood, punk found him. “I was happy during punk. Incredibly happy,” MacGowan said. “You call it chaos. I don’t regard it as chaos. I regard it as natural living.”

In the year 1977, Shane MacGowan stepped into the limelight as “Shane O’Hooligan,” the lead vocalist and principal songwriter for The Nipple Erectors, an ensemble later rechristened as The Nips. This venture, formed in tandem with his then-companion, Shanne Bradley, marked MacGowan’s initial foray into the musical arena. The Nips disbanded three years later, and MacGowan soon embarked on an endeavor that would cement his status in the punk pantheon of music, The Pogues.

Initially bearing the moniker Pogue Mahone—a whimsical nod to the Irish expression “póg mo thóin” (kiss my arse) —the band was a collective of diverse talents, comprising MacGowan himself on vocals, Spider Stacy adding his vocals and tin whistle, Jem Finer on the banjo, James Fearnley masterfully handling the accordion, Andrew Ranken on drums, and Cait O’Riordan commanding the bass.

While MacGowan’s punk contemporaries were stripping their music to the roots of 1950s rhythm and blues, MacGowan’s sights were set a hundred years prior, blending Irish folk with explosive punk ethos, redefining the boundaries of genre entirely. The Pogues’ songs, many of which were written by MacGowan, are celebrated for their lyrical depth, storytelling, and ability to capture the spirit of the Irish diaspora. His lyrics often draw from personal experiences and observations, painting vivid pictures of life, love, and hardship.

MacGowan’s formidable talent, however, suffered greatly: his turbulent lifestyle and battles with substance abuse evolved into both a part of his public persona and a source of concern for his fans and loved ones. Despite these struggles, Shane MacGowan offered us a window into a unique cultural perspective and the complexities of the human experience through themes of struggle, identity, and resilience.

Shane MacGowan, like the great Dylan Thomas before him, garnered two distinct, paradoxical reputations: on one hand, he was tragically afflicted with a sense of mammoth self-destruction, whose personal demons often overshadowed his public persona. On the other, he was revered as a masterful poet, who deftly painted the stark realities of the Irish diaspora. The message was universal, be they Irish-Americans guzzling Guinness in Scranton tap rooms, or the “London Irish” sleeping rough across the pond. MacGowan had the ability to vividly capture the nuances of generational trauma, substance abuse, and displacement.

MacGowan’s ambition was to disrupt the status quo of the music scene with a sound that was deeply rooted, imbued with genuine strength, emotion, and a raw, unfiltered sense of anger. His lyrical craft, deeply influenced by the realms of literature, mythology, and biblical narratives, aimed to bring a profound depth and authenticity to the genre. MacGowan often articulated his discontent with the conventional rock format, which he believed had reached its creative zenith, often with lackluster results.

“We just wanted to shove music that had roots, and is just generally stronger and has more real anger and emotion, down the throats of a completely pap-orientated pop audience,” he said.

Among his most illustrious contributions to music is the startling opening lines of Fairytale of New York. This song, an elegy to the dreams and despairs of alcoholics, transcended its seemingly bleak origins to become an unlikely Yuletide anthem.

As the late 1980s unfolded, the trajectory of Shane MacGowan’s career took a tumultuous turn. His struggles with addiction, coupled with a concerning decline in both mental and physical health, reached a critical point. This unfortunate confluence of personal challenges compelled the members of The Pogues to make a difficult decision: they were forced to part ways with Mr. MacGowan, their frontman and a pivotal figure in the band’s success.

However, this setback did not mark the end of MacGowan’s output. In the aftermath of his departure from The Pogues, he embarked on a new venture, founding Shane MacGowan & the Popes. Throughout the 1990s he carved out a new niche, recording and touring.



Shane MacGowan’s musical journey culminated with the 1997 album “The Crock of Gold” by Shane MacGowan & the Popes. However, his creative spirit continued to flourish. Since 2015, he had been collaborating with the Irish band Cronin on a project that remained unreleased, a blend of cover songs and original compositions.

One of his final works was the creation of The Eternal Buzz and the Crock of Gold, a lavish art book. This publication was celebrated by critic Waldemar Januszczak for its embodiment of MacGowan’s unique artistic energy, described as “demented, wild, fascinating, scabrous.”

After a series of serious health battles, broken bones, and confinement to a wheelchair, MacGowan passed this morning from lingering effects from the encephalitis he had suffered from the past year. Just last week he had been released from hospital.

Shane MacGowan’s personal life was as textured as his professional one. He married his devoted longtime partner Victoria Clarke in 2018. He is survived by his wife, sister Siobhan, and father Maurice.

MacGowan’s death was announced by Clarke this morning.

Da war ich vor kurzem noch in Münster und hatte die Band um Bariton Sänger ROB GOODWIN live gesehen und nun bekomme ich die schon 5.CD der britischen Gruppe auf den Tisch. Das Konzert im Sputnikclub war schon eine Offenbarung und hoch emotional, die neue CD ist es natürlich ebenfalls, nur sind die 4 aus Manchester von THE SLOW SHOW schon so professionell aufgestellt, das sie live genauso gut wie auf CD klingen. Die atmosphärischen Tracks wie „Roulette“ oder „Royal Blue“ und „Lament“, die mit viel Tiefgang interpretiert werden, gipfeln ab und zu gar in epischen Ausbrüchen, das hat die Fans schon auf den ersten Platten wie „White Water“ begeistert. Die äußerst spielfreudige Band liefert aber generell sehr harmonische und melodische Songs geradezu am Fließband ab. Der eingängige Vorabtrack „One Shot“ mit Trompeteneinsatz war z.B. so eine Perle, die sofort im Ohr hängen geblieben ist, genauso wie das fantastische „Builder Boy“! Dazu die sehr markante Stimme vom Frontmann Rob, der die tiefgründigen und poetischen Texte so wundervoll zelebriert, das eine Art melancholische, schwelgerische Aura entsteht. Die neuen Songs sind generell eine Ode an die Liebe und das in all ihren Erscheinungsformen, hatte Sänger Rob vorab verkündet. Irgendwie ist das Ganze ein Mix aus Gruppen wie CIGARETTES AFTER SEX, LAMPCHOP,  AND ALSO THE TREES, etwas alte Coldplay, THE NATIONAL und TINDERSTICKS, was ja nicht so verkehrt ist. Fazit : Die definitive Winterplatte 2023/24 liegt uns also jetzt schon vor, greift zu, mehr Romantik geht nicht.

In the eclectic, often inscrutable world of avant-garde music, Berlin’s own Lolita Terrorist Sounds stands out with the kind of name that would make even the most seasoned literary aficionado raise an eyebrow. Founded by Maurizio Vitale, the band’s moniker is a daring mashup à la William Burroughs’ cut-up technique, combining Nabokov’s controversial Lolita with the starkly contrasting “terrorist,” and topping it off with Sounds – a word as straightforward as their music is complex.

Their latest studio offering, St. Lola, features the lap-steel stylings of Swans’ Kristof Hahn and the late, great avant-garde icon Bob Rutman. Lolita Terrorist Sounds leap over boundaries, drawing from a hodgepodge of influences that range from Nine Inch Nails to Einstürzende Neubauten, with a side of early Nick Cave’s dark poetry.

Mind the Gap, the crown jewel of the album, transcends the conventional boundaries of a song, transforming into a melodic dialogue between London and Berlin. The track is accompanied by a striking 8mm video, steeped in the reminiscent charm of Jean-Luc Godard’s cinematographic style. This retro-futuristic visual narrative is centered around a genderfluid protagonist, who is much more than a mere character in the video. They personify the essence of the track, embodying its deep and multifaceted message. This fusion of music and visuals in Mind the Gap offers a profound, albeit enigmatic, reflection on the complexities of the human experience.

The songs featured on St. Lola came together in a former East Berlin haunted building used by the secret services during the Wall era. Band leader Maurizio Vitale recorded and produced the studio debut at this very special place adopting an esoteric approach towards music: “I used a limited amount of old microphones and analogue gear to capture and preserve the instinctive roughness of the music,” he says. “It was more about capturing the magic of the moment and the historical place where the songs were conceived rather than making a polished record.”

Vitale’s past and present collaborations include work with members of acclaimed bands such as Einstürzende Neubauten, Swans, Iggy Pop, Thåström, PJ Harvey, and Faust. His talent was at the service of the legendary Sabar percussionist Doudou N’Diaye Rose (SN), and he has played with German singer Andrea Schroeder both in the studio and live. In support of their previous release, ‘Shaved Girl,’ Lolita Terrorist Sounds has opened for the Swedish artist Anna von Hausswolff, done numerous live dates, and has played an exclusive acoustic show on the national German Radio Eins.

The mixing prowess of Thomas Stern, known for his work with luminaries such as Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, Swans, and Crime and the City Solution, has played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s debut album. His touch infused the album with a palpable raw energy. The presence of Swans’ guitar virtuoso Kristof Hahn, who graces almost the entire album with his lap-steel guitar expertise, and the contributions of avant-garde legend Bob Rutman, add an extra layer of magic to this remarkable debut.

Eigentlich vereint „Damned“ all das, was den Metalcore so interessant macht. Warum wir mit den vier Songs anfangs dennoch etwas fremdeln, liegt schlicht an der unerwarteten musikalischen Entwicklung UNE MISÈREs. Die bedrückende, unheilschwangere Grundstimmung des Debüts „Sermon“ (2019) haben die Isländer anno 2023 fast gänzlich abgestreift, gehen mit den exzessiven Breakdowns im Opener „Sever“ gar einen Schritt in Richtung aktueller Genre-Konventionen. Ein Eindruck, welchen die starken Screams des neuen Frontmanns Rúnar Guðmundsson nur unterstreichen – in Teilen wirkt die Band auf den ersten Blick nun etwas angepasster.

Dafür punkten UNE MISÈRE nach wie vor an anderer Stelle: Die ungeschliffene und rohe Produktion wirkt kalt und doch lebendig, so dass die zahlreichen metallischen Einflüsse umso besser hervorstechen können. Klammern wir die Vocals aus, pflügt das Sextett im kompakten Rundumschlag „Drown“ mit Blastbeats und Death-Thrash-Riffing durch zunächst unerwartetes Terrain, nachdem „Near Death“ der Hardcore-Keule ein paar angeschwärzte Passagen zur Seite gestellt hatte. Die dezenten Black-Metal-Vibes gab es schon auf dem Vorgänger, werden auf „Damned“ aber stark dosiert und dann ungezügelt auf uns losgelassen.

UNE MISÈRE rühren einen furiosen Genre-Cocktail an
Der Stilmix gelingt im Falle UNE MISÈREs vor allem deshalb, weil sich die Band im Kurzformat zu keiner Zeit wiederholt. Zwar nutzt auch „Nocturne“ zum Abschluss ähnliche Versatzstücke, garniert das Arrangement aber anfangs mit einer zusätzlichen Portion Groove, nur um im energischen Refrain ein paar cleane Shouts einzustreuen. Entfernt lassen sich hier stellenweise sicherlich SYLOSIS heraushören, wenngleich das Stück am Ende des Tages doch wieder in sein angestammtes Metier zurückkehrt.

Und dort ist man auch gut aufgehoben, denn schlussendlich finden wir auf dieser zwölfminütigen EP alles, was den Metalcore in seinem Kern so reizvoll macht: einen furiosen Genre-Cocktail, der sich eben nicht immer nur des gleichen wiedergekäuten Schemas bedient und gerade deshalb Zukunft hat.

New York City’s Miss Teen America, a morbidly charming gothic rock quintet, has all the subtlety of a black-clad figure on the subway amidst a sea of business suits after a night out at The Bank circa 1997. Their origin story: a classic urban tale of determination, involving flyers plastered across the city with the intriguing proposition: Do You Want to Be In A Goth Band? This siren call was the brainchild of TJ (vocals, lyrics) and Vic (bass), and soon, the duo found their bandmates in Alex (guitar), Marcus (guitar), and Tom (drums).

Since their formation in early 2023, Miss Teen America has been painting the town black, infusing the city’s music scene with their unique blend of brooding gothic roots, punk rock zeal, a go-go beat straight out of Shindig, Hullabaloo and The Munsters, and a dash of pop catchiness. It’s like a dark chocolate bar with a whisper of chili – unexpected, but somehow it works.

Their debut single, “Take Me Back,” delves into the light and cheerful themes of bloodlust, divine love, religious trauma, and manhood. It’s the kind of song that makes you ponder the meaning of life, or at least the meaning of wearing black in the summer. With this track, Miss Teen America make a statement, complete with eyeliner and a sense of existential dread.

“Miss Teen America is the result of a combination of five distinct tastes that came together to create a gothic style of rock that is dark and moody, but at the same time loud and commanding, and we believe Take Me Back represents that fact perfectly,” says the band. “For something that was recorded in our friend’s kitchen/ living room, we are amazed with how well it came out. We are collectively into keeping true to our DIY roots, and we hope that our songs convey that.”

Die Black Metal-Band SUICIDE CIRCLE hat mit “The Highest Spheres” einen ersten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Bukkake of Souls” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Shotgun Prayers” (2021) das zweite Album des von Meyhna’ch (MEYHNACH, Ex-DOCTOR LIVINGSTONE, Ex-HELL MILITIA, Ex-MÜTIILATION) ins Leben gerufenen Projekts.

Es ist nach “Westend” (2021) das zweite Album des deutschen Trios, welches aus Drummer Alexander Schimetzky, Bassist Max Ludwig sowie Gitarrist, Synthesizer und Sänger Oliver Becker besteht.

Die Technical Death Metal-Band OWDWYR hat nach den Videos zu “Lagos“, “Ein” und “Stench of Indemnity” mit “Cower” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Receptor” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album des US-amerikanischen Trios, welches aus Gitarrist Paul Plumeri Jr., Bassist Chris Williams und Sänger Max Lichtman (WE ALL HAVE DAY JOBS) besteht.

"Visions of Summerland (Live at Arminius Church Rotterdam)" ist weit mehr als nur ein weiteres Live-Album. DOOL nahmen diese Stücke in der dunkelsten aller Nächte während der Wintersonnenwende am 23. Dezember 2022 auf. Es war nicht nur physisch die finsterste Zeit des Jahres, sondern auch spirituell eine dunkle Stunde für die niederländischen Dark Rock Shootingstars. Aufgrund der weltweiten Pandemie konnten sie kaum mit ihrem aktuellen, zweiten Album "Summerland" auf Tour gehen. Außerdem war es das letzte gemeinsame Konzert mit ihrem Freund und Schlagzeuger Micha Haring, der zuvor unter vier Augen und aus persönlichen Gründen seinen Abschied von DOOL angekündigt hatte. Die Zeichen in der Arminiuskerk ("Arminiuskirche") in Rotterdam deuteten auf einen höchst melancholischen Auftritt hin. Umgeben von sakraler Architektur und religiösen Bildnissen, vor Familie, Freunden sowie ihren treuesten Fans opferten DOOL all ihr Herzblut, ihren Schweiß und ihre Tränen für die Songs. Pure Bühnenmagie lag in der Luft. Verzweiflung und Schmerz verwandelten sich in musikalische Schönheit und Hoffnung. Frontperson Raven sprach hinterher sogar vom wohl besten DOOL-Auftritt aller Zeiten! Seitdem sie im Jahr 2015 in der alten niederländischen Hafenstadt Rotterdam aus der Asche von THE DEVIL'S BLOOD und ELLE BANDITA auferstanden sind, haben DOOL der europäischen Dark Rock Szene ihren einzigartigen Stempel aufgedrückt. Das Debütalbum "Here Now, There Then" erschien im Jahr 2017 und gewann sofort Auszeichnungen wie "Album des Monats" in den renommierten deutschen Magazinen Rock Hard und Metal Hammer, wo DOOL auch den Titel "Bestes Debütalbum 2017" holten – neben viel Lob aus aller Welt, unter anderem von VICE (US), Aardschok (NL) und De Volkskrant (NL). Mit ihrem zweiten Album "Summerland", das im April 2020 das Licht der Welt erblickte, bestätigten die Shootingstars um Raven van Dorst (Gesang, Gitarre) ihren Blitzstart und ernteten weiteren Jubel in den Medien. Die Powerviolence / Hardcore-Band THETAN hat nach “Note To Self” mit “White Sheets Blowing In The Breeze” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Grand Ole Agony” veröffentlicht.

Im September ist mit “Coup De Grace” eine zweite Single des Albums erschienen.

“Dies ist unsere Ode an das trotzige Scheitern”, sagt die Band. “Wir können nicht immer gewinnen, aber wir können verdammt sicher schreiend und tretend untergehen. Verlieren mit Stil.”

Im August ist bereits der Opener “God’s America” erschienen.

“Ich bin im Süden der USA aufgewachsen und hatte so lange ich denken kann mit ignoranten Arschlöchern und ihrem stolzen “Patriotismus” zu tun”, erinnert sich Dan Emery. “In den frühen 2000er Jahren erreichte es einen Fieberpegel, und jeder war auf eine ernsthafte ‘Wenn du nicht einer von uns bist, fick dich’-Mentalität eingestellt. Dieser Song ist eine zynische Reflektion dieses unangebrachten Stolzes, der sich in den letzten Jahren mehr und mehr in die amerikanische Psyche eingeschlichen hat. Es ist ein widerlicher Song über eine widerliche Mentalität, der wir einfach nicht entkommen können.”

“Grand Ole Agony” wurde von Bassist und Sänger Dan Emery (Ex-MORAL DECAY, Ex-KAROSHI) bei Black Matter Mastering produziert. Weiteres Band-Mitglied ist Drummer Chad L’Eplattenier. Erscheinen wird das Album, welches mit einem Cover-Artwork von Kristen Ferrell ausgestattet wurde, am 13. Oktober 2023 via Anti-Corporate Music.

Arbeitstier Nate Garrett hat in der zweiten Hälfte des letzten Jahrzehnts einige schöne Doom Metal-Alben veröffentlicht – SPIRIT ADRIFT standen mit „Curse Of Conception“ und „Divided By Darkness“ zu unrecht im Schatten von PALLBEARER, auch wenn die ihnen immer die ein oder andere Nasenlänge voraus waren. Dass sich die Texaner irgendwann in Richtung klassischen Heavy Metal entwickelt haben und dadurch in so manche Kitschfalle tappen, ist ein wenig tragisch, auch weil GRAND MAGUS, ihre schwedischen Brüder im Geiste, dieselbe Transformation über lange Zeit gut überstanden haben.

Eingängigkeit, Pathos, Stangenware: SPIRIT ADRIFTs liefern mit „Ghost At The Gallows“ ein Nummer-Sicher-Album ab.
Drei Jahre nach dem letzten Album „Enlightened In Eternity“ führen SPIRIT ADRIFT ihre Entwicklung ziemlich genau an jenem Punkt weiter: Zeitgemäßer, klassischer Heavy Metal. Schon „Give Her To The River“ ist mit knapp acht Minuten ziemlich episch, aber auch ein Nummer-Sicher-Opener, der sich etwas zieht. Das Uptempo-Doppel „Barn Burner“ und „Hanged Man’s Revenge“ hat Refrains, um die Faust in die Luft zu strecken, „Death Won’t Stop Me“ schwankt zwischen Fremdscham-Pathos und Eingängigkeit. Dass SPIRIT ADRIFT es beherrschen, auch abseits von Klischees mitzureißen, zeigt das Kompakte „I Shall Return“, das zwar auch kein Klischee auslässt, aber dank launiger Twin-Guitars doch irgendwie schön ist.

SPIRIT ADRIFT sind in Übung geblieben, ihren zahlreichen Touren und den beiden EPs „Forge Your Future“ und „20 Centuries Gone“ sei Dank. Abnutzungserscheinungen gibt es daher kaum, Nate Garrett und seine neuen Mitstreiter Michael Arellano (Drums) und Gitarrist Tom Draper liefern eine saubere Performance in Sachen Perfomance ab. Das täuscht nicht darüber hinweg, dass diese acht Songs zu sauber, zu glatt, zu sehr auf Nummer sicher gepolt sind. SPIRIT ADRIFT kratzen dabei hauptsächlich an der Oberfläche und verpassen die Gelegenheit, wirklich tiefgehende Musik zu schreiben – eine Falle, in die PALLBEARER oder KHEMMIS noch nie getappt sind.

Doom gibt es nur noch in homöopathischen Dosen: Auf „Ghost At The Gallows“ ist SPIRIT ADRIFTs Transformation zum klassischen Heavy Metal so gut wie abgeschlossen.
„These Two Hands“ mag darüber fast hinwegtäuschen, das balladeske Stück wird in der zweiten Hälfte zu einer melodiösen, kraftvollen Powerballade, aber es landet im stereotypen Durchschnitt. Dieses Stück wäre die perfekte Gelegenheit gewesen, zum kraftvoll-melodischen Doom der Vergangenheit zurückzukehren, doch SPIRIT ADRIFT verpassen diese Gelegenheit. Einigermaßen versöhnlich wird dann immerhin der Abschluss des Albums, der Titelsong zeigt in der zweiten Hälfte, dass der Doom doch irgendwie noch zu den Texanern gehört. Hier gehen SPIRIT ADRIFT auch wieder unter die Haut, selbst wenn sie die aufgebaute Spannung zu kurz und eher leidenschaftslos-pflichtschuldig entladen.

Sollte die Band es darauf ausgelegt haben, mit „Ghost At The Gallows“ im Mainstream des Genres anzukommen, geht die Rechnung aber voll auf. Nate Garrett und seine Mitstreiter spielen ihre Musik tadellos runter, die Songs sind mal schnörkellos, mal etwas vielschichtiger ohne zu Überfordern, die Produktion von Sanford Parker und der Mix von Zeuss sind zeitgemäß und wuchtig. Vielleicht ist das hier alles einfach zu viel des Guten, denn mit etwas mehr Dreck und etwas mehr Old-School-Vibe, würden SPIRIT ADRIFT einen gewissen Charme versprühen. Alles in allem ist „Ghost At The Gallows“ ein erschreckend gefälliges Album, dem es vor allem am Tiefgang mangelt.

Out on 23 February 2024 on Dependent Records is the all new Kirlian Camera album “Radio Signals for the Dying”. Included on this album are also Julian Assange speech excerpts. Julian Assange is the Australian editor, publisher, and activist who founded WikiLeaks in 2006. Assange has been confined in HM Prison Belmarsh in London since April 2019, as the United States government’s extradition effort is contested in the British courts.

“Radio Signals for the Dying” furthermore includes the band’s interpretation of Depeche Mode’s “Wrong” and the song “Winter” from The Sound. From a collaboration with Solitary Experiment comes Kirlian Camera’s take on “The Great Unknown”, which Solitary Experiment previously released in an own version with vocals contributed by Elena Alice Fossi.

The recording line-up consisted of Elena Alice Fossi and Angelo Bergamini augmented with bass player Mia W. Wallace and cello player Terri Harrison. The band’s current live line-up consists of Elena Alice Fossi, Angelo Bergamini, Mia W. Wallace, Alessandro Comerio and Thalìa Bellazecca.

Rock-Gitarrist SCOTT STAPP hat eine neue Single samt Lyric-Video geteilt: “Black Butterfly” bei YouTube.

Zuvor erschien zudem die Nummer “What I Deserve” bei YouTube. Entnommen ist der Track, bei dem Yannis Papadopoulos (BEAST IN BLACK) als Gastsänger mitwirkt, dem Album “Higher Power”, das am 15. März 2024 via Napalm Records auf CD, LP sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Der Titelsong “Higher Power” steht ebenfalls via YouTube auf Abruf bereit. Der Musiker äußert sich zum Song:

“Die Geheimnisse des Lebens lassen sich enträtseln, wenn man auf seine innere Stimme hört. Für mich bedeutet das, mich auf meinen Glauben an Gott zu stützen und auf seine Stimme zu hören, die mich durch die Kämpfe und die Dunkelheit führt. Für andere, ob nun durch Kunst, Natur, Wissenschaft, Familie oder einer Kombination aus all dem, ist das Anzapfen einer höheren Macht ein individueller Prozess, der einen offenen Geist und die Bereitschaft erfordert, sich von einer Kraft leiten zu lassen, die größer ist als man selbst.”

Die Progressive Death Metal-Band PERSEFONE hat für 2. Februar 2024 eine neue EP angekündigt. “Lingua Ignota: Part I” erscheint via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital.

Den ersten Vorgeschmack “One Word” gibt es als Musikvideo bei YouTube. Gitarrist Carlos Lozano kommentiert:

“‘One Word’ verkörpert alles, was Lingua Ignota sein soll, sowohl musikalisch als auch textlich. Mit einer viel organischeren und bandorientierteren Herangehensweise an das Schreiben für diese neue Veröffentlichung war ‘One Word’ der erste Schritt in Richtung des Sounds, den wir mit der neuen Musik zu definieren versuchten. Ein Sound, bei dem jedes Instrument, jedes Wort, jede Note und jeder Schlag seinen Platz hat – ohne sinnlose Passagen oder Übergänge. Chris Fielding wird CONAN verlassen, er war seit 2013 Sänger und Bassist der Sludge Doom Metal-Band. CONAN haben laut Statement schon Ersatz gefunden, den Namen aber noch nicht bekannt gegeben.

Schweren Herzens geben wir bekannt, dass Chris Fielding bei Conan aussteigen wird.
Chris kam Ende 2013 als Ersatz für Phil Coumbe zu CONAN. Schnell wurde er ein sehr wichtiger Teil, als Musiker und als Produzent.  Wir haben mit ihm viele schöne Reisen und Erlebnisse genießen dürfen und Musik erschaffen, auf die wir sehr stolz sind. Wir sind enge Freunde geworden und unterstützen daher natürlich Chris’ Wunsch, sich auf andere Bereiche seines Lebens zu konzentrieren. Er wird uns natürlich als Produzent erhalten bleiben.  Chris’ letzte Shows mit Conan werden während unserer kommenden UK-Tour im März 2024 stattfinden. Kommt unbedingt vorbei und verabschiedet euch von ihm!
Wir haben Chris’ Nachfolger ernannt und werden dies zu gegebener Zeit bekannt geben.

Die Progressive Metal-Band TEMIC hat mit “Terror Management Theory” ein neues Album veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album des internationalen Projekts, dem Sänger Fredrik Bergersen (MARATON, 22), Gitarrist Eric Gillette (THE NEAL MORSE BAND, MIKE PORTNOY’S SHATTERED FORTRESS), Drummer Simen Sandnes (SHINING, ARKENTYPE) und Keyboarder Diego Tejeida (DEVIN TOWNSEND, MIKE PORTNOY’S SHATTERED FORTRESS, Ex-HAKEN) angehören.

Jetzt präsentiert das Projekt nach dem Clip zum Track “Mothallah” bei YouTube auch den dem Intro folgenden Opener “Through the Sands of Time” als Video-Clip. Auch zur zweiten Single “Falling Away” steht ein Musikvideo bei YouTube bereit.

“Terror Management Theory” wurde von Rich Mouser (u.a. für TRANSATLANTIC tätig) im The Mouse House gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Hicham Hamzi (u.a. für RENDEZVOUS POINT tätig) ausgestattet. Erschienen ist das Album am 17. November 2023 via Season of Mist. Vorab gibt es mit “Count Your Losses” einen Video-Clip.

After releasing the download, LP and CD version of “Transmissions From The Western Walls Of Time (Live 1997)”, Mortiis now releases this +33 minute long live recording on all streaming platforms as well.

“Transmissions From The Western Walls Of Time (Live 1997)” was as the title says recorded live in 1997 at the now defunct venue Transmission, in San Francisco. Fan recorded it is an offers Mortiis live in all its murky, fan recorded, low fidelity grime of the 90´ies.

The digital version was originally made available for free to members of the Mortiis patron/fan club, Cult Of Thee Black Wizards, right around the same time of the CD and LP release. Mortiis adds this when we contact him: “I decided it was time to put out for anyone else that might be interested, that may not be a collector of physical records.”

I mean it was all really rough and low fidelity, but I liked the idea of bringing some early stuff “out of the vaults”, so to speak, so I borrowed a VHS player from a friend of mine, and transferred all the audio into my mac, and proceeded to clean it up as best as I could, and got it mastered. The plan is to release a few more of these “from the vaults” live albums ongoingly.”

The sound is of course not that of an officially recorded live set: “Well, it sounded better if you were in the actual room at the time, haha! I think it´s a cool snapshot in time, from an interesting angle (in the middle of the crowd). It would have been nice if that audio was a tad better, but it is what it is. It´s cool that some of those early shows were documented at all.”
