New York’s Bootblacks has remained a prominent force on the scene, dating back to their inception in 2010. This year has proven a busy one, including a triumphant return to the stage and and a lineup shift marking a new era for the band. Hot off the heels of their successful tour with Twin Tribes, the band has planted seeds for their anxiously awaited fifth LP, Paradise, due out on Artoffact Records in 2024. The LP will be their first as a trio, with vocalist Panther Almqvist and synth player/programmer Barrett Hiatt joined by Kalle Falleberg, formerly of German post-punk favorites Liste Noire. We’re honored to premiere the second single from Paradise, titled “Wilderness.” Listen below:

Wilderness by Bootblacks

“Wilderness” begins with swirling, ominous synth tones before giving way to a shuffling electronic beat and throbbing synth bass. Almqvist quickly delivers the opening lyric and immediately, the track opens up with driving synth melody courtesy of Hiatt that would make Depeche Mode stalwart Alan Wilder stop dead in his tracks. Newcomer Kalle Falleberg’s descending guitar lines, which recall Bowie sideman Carlos Alomar’s rhythm-based licks, are sprinkled throughout the track, which also incorporates a series of spoken word and falsetto passages from Almqvist. Whereas previous Bootblacks material has always featured deep electronic flourishes among a post-punk bedrock, “Wilderness” (and previous single “Forbidden Flames“) mark a welcome shift to a more synth pop-enriched sound, aided in part by producer Xavier Paradis (Automelodi). As such, “Wilderness” is ripe for the dancefloor, yet retains the band’s trademark penchant for top-shelf songwriting. Shades of Technique-era New Order, Duran Duran’s eponymous 1993 LP, and the aforementioned Depeche Mode run deep through the track, these touchstones launching the band into full electro-bliss. Frankly, we’re here for it.

Almqvist offers a bit of insight to the band’s new direction:

We have been trying to experiment more with electronic music and sounds on this album. “Wilderness” is one of those songs where we’ve incorporated stricter electro elements and is representative towards the new approach and style we’re building on the album. We’re big fans of juxtaposition so its tone and structure are somewhat darker but yet still upbeat.

Es sollte ein besonderes Geschenk zum 30. Geburtstag werden. Ein kraftvolles Statement, dass Musik die Menschen zusammenbringen kann. Ein ergreifendes Plädoyer für das Miteinander, um die Welt ein bisschen besser zu machen. Dafür stehen ORPHANED LAND seit ihrer Bandgründung im Jahr 1991, ohne sich dabei jedoch in naiver Illusion zu verlieren. „A Heaven You May Create“ spricht es ja bereits an: Wir alle sind die Architekten unserer gemeinsamen Zukunft – eine, die Ende 2023 im Heimatland der israelischen Progressive Metal-Band ungemein düster aussieht.

Der Nahostkonflikt erreichte mit dem Terroranschlag vom 7. Oktober eine neue Eskalationsstufe in einer Region, in der schon viel zu viel Blut vergossen wurde. Wer die Äußerungen von Sänger Kobi Farhi in den sozialen Medien verfolgt, bekommt vielleicht eine leise Ahnung, wie herzzerreißend die Situation sowohl für die Band als auch deren Mitmenschen ist – insbesondere, weil der Frieden zwischen den Völkern und Religionen eines der zentralen Themen ist, die ORPHANED LAND in ihrem Schaffen immer und immer wieder in den Fokus rücken.

ORPHANED LAND verleihen ihrer Rückschau dank Orchester eine neue Dimension
Gerade deshalb ist „A Heaven You May Create” aber nun umso relevanter: Was ursprünglich im Juni 2021 während der Pandemie mit einem 60-köpfigen Orchester in Tel Aviv als besonderes Jubiläumskonzert aufgezeichnet wurde, bekommt vor dem aktuellen regionalpolitischen Hintergrund eine weitere Dimension, welche Stücke wie „All Is One“ unweigerlich ins Zentrum befördert . Doch selbst wenn wir diese Umstände weitestgehend ausklammern, verliert der Live-Mitschnitt nichts von seiner Eindringlichkeit.

Als Rückschau auf 30 Jahre Bandgeschichte decken ORPHANED LAND mehr oder minder alle Schaffensperioden ab und entlocken ihren Kompositionen dabei nicht selten neue Facetten. Gerade die orchestralen Arrangements scheinen wie geschaffen für die ausladenden Nummern des Meisterstücks „Mabool (The Story Of The Three Sons Of Seven)“ (2004), das auch nach so vielen Jahren noch die stützende Säule des Sets bilden darf. Dem wunderbaren „The Storm Still Rages Inside“ verleiht das Chamber Opera Orchestra während seiner langen Instrumentalpassagen  zusätzliche Tiefe, während sich zwischendrin sogar das sonst vornehm zurückhaltende Publikum bemerkbar macht.

“A Heaven You May Create” ist eine Ansammlung von Höhepunkten
Zwischen der berührenden Ballade „Brother“ und den aufrüttelnden „Sapari“ sowie „Norra El Norra“ findet sich mit „Like Orpheus“, „Birth of The Three“, „Ocean Land“ und dem zart-zerbrechlichen „In Thy Never Ending Way“ ein regelrechtes Sammelsurium aus Höhepunkten, welches dank des transparenten und doch organischen Mix durchaus kraftvoll aus den Lautsprechern schallt. Auch deshalb ist „A Heaven You May Create“ eine ideale Gelegenheit, das packende Material ORPHANED LANDs in einem leicht anderen Kontext neu zu entdecken – wobei die CD-Ausgabe mit einer gekürzten Setlist vorliebnehmen muss: Neben dem Intro fielen „The Kiss Of Babylon (The Sins)“ sowie „A Never Ending Way“ vom Zweitwerk „El Norra Alila“ (1996) der Schere zum Opfer.

Als Ausgleich liegt ausschließlich der CD-Fassung eine DVD mit der rund 90-minütigen Konzert-Aufzeichnung bei, die allerdings aufgrund der formatbedingt dürftigen Bildqualität eher als nette Dreingabe zu verstehen ist. Ein schönes Gesamtpaket ist „A Heaven You May Create“ nichtsdestotrotz. Band, Chor und Orchester agieren Hand in Hand und bringen dadurch genau das zum Ausdruck, was die Formation im Kern schon immer angetrieben hatte: Wenn alle an einem Strang ziehen, geschehen bisweilen wunderbare Dinge. Eine simple Weisheit, die wir dieser Tage und angesichts der grausamen Realität viel zu oft vergessen.

ORPHANED LAND geben die Hoffnung auf ein besseres Morgen nicht auf
Es wäre einfach das Handtuch zu werfen und in Resignation zu versinken. Gäbe es nicht Künstler:innen wie ORPHANED LAND, die selbst dann die Hoffnung auf ein besseres Morgen nicht aufgeben, wenn die Wirklichkeit beinahe aussichtslos erscheint. So wird der sicherlich nicht grundlos gewählte Titel unweigerlich zum Motto der vergangenen und hoffentlich kommenden drei Dekaden, auf dass wir ihn irgendwann tatsächlich erleben dürfen, den Himmel, den sich das Quintett musikalisch schon lange geschaffen hat.

Die Black Metal-Band NARBELETH hat mit “A Pale Crown” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das sechste Album der Kubaner, die vor ein paar Jahren nach Spanien übersiedelt sind, und folgt dem 2021er-Album “Svmma Cvm Nox Arcana” nach.

“A Pale Crown” wurde von Javi Félez im Moontower Studios in Barcelona produziert und wird am 5. Januar 2024 via Folter Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es mit “Of Moonlight and Spirits” einen Video-Clip.

In Carl Jung’s “Mysterium Coniunctionis,” the “solar animus” is a key concept within his analytical psychology framework. It symbolizes a masculine aspect of the unconscious mind, transcending gender, and embodies qualities like rationality and enlightenment. This archetype, linked with solar symbolism, represents consciousness and the guiding force in the psyche. Jung aligns this with alchemical sun symbolism, denoting perfection and self-realization. The solar animus is thus central to Jung’s theory of individuation, where integrating this masculine energy is crucial for psychological wholeness and personal growth.

Estonian artist Kadri Sammel, the multi-faceted talent helping the darkwave project Bedless Bones, explores this concept with her new single, Solar Animus. In the realm of modern electronic music, Sammel stands as a striking and compelling figure, bringing her own distinct vision as well as enigmatic energy, weaving together elements from the shadowy realms of electro-noir genres.

Sammel’s artistry is evident in her new single, Solar Animus: she skillfully blends these genres with the kinetic energy of techno beats, the gritty textures of industrial music, and the haunting atmospheres that seem to transcend the ordinary. Solar Animus fuses contrasting elements, creating a realm where dark, mesmerizing melodies coexist with energetic, pulsating rhythms.

The music video for the track, directed by Sammel and with cinematography by Anders Melts, presents a psychedelic journey of the mind, richly infused with Jungian symbolism. As viewers are taken through the song, the video explores the depths of the unconscious, using imagery and metaphors that resonate with Carl Jung’s concepts. Bedless Bones’ latest album, Mire Of Mercury, is out now. Following Kadri Sammel’s signing with Metropolis Records in the summer of 2023, the album is a significant milestone that highlights her growing influence in the music world. It comes after the expanded re-release of their 2019 debut album, Sublime Malaise, which has garnered momentum and captivated listeners once again. The album is available on CD  as well as all major digital streaming platforms.

Post-Punk.com interviewed Sammel about Mire of Mercury; as well as collaborations with other Estonian artists, her artistic background and her thoughts on her new release through Metropolis Records.

“Mire of Mercury” marks your third album with Bedless Bones. How do you feel your sound and artistic vision have evolved since your first album, “Sublime Malaise“?

It has naturally evolved, but I don’t think it has been heading in a certain direction or with a clear destination. It seems to be meandering between all my interests and influences of the moment. The sound and vision take form with the development of the album, they are not predetermined. I try to keep the process as genuine and truthful to my feelings as possible. I have tried writing some songs in a certain style or approach, but somehow, they still end up sounding a bit *different*, so perhaps I’m incapable of creating music that is purely in one genre or following a set of rules. A certain atmosphere sneaks in. I think certain elements of the music are clearer on Mire of Mercury, compared to my earlier works. I was experimenting a lot with song structures and form on my previous album, and to counter that I wanted to have the skeletons of the songs on the new one to be simpler to let other parts shine.

Your music often blends various genres like darkwave, modern classical, and synth-pop. What is your process for integrating these diverse elements into a cohesive sound? Or is it not as difficult as it appears to be?

I don’t approach it from an engineer’s perspective, taking the characteristic components of different genres and trying to put them together into a harmonious union. I just follow my intuition and choose instruments and sounds I’m drawn towards. Sometimes I notice things like genre connotations only afterwards, and sometimes I don’t at all, and other people come up with these labels and say how things sound like something. For example, modern classical – I don’t know where that came from.

You’ve had a rich musical journey that includes experiences in Estonia’s underground scene and collaborations with Estonian artists. How has the cultural and musical landscape of Estonia influenced the creation and themes of ‘Mire of Mercury‘?”

Not much, at least not knowingly. I’ve collaborated with an Estonian author (Mikk Pärnits) in the capacity that he wrote the text to one of my earlier songs that doesn’t appear on this album. That has also been my only song with all the lyrics in Estonian. Also, Estonian artists and friends Cly/Suva, Tamhiis, Artur Lääts and Oudeis have done remixes for Bedless Bones in the past. I wish we had a more vivacious underground music scene in Estonia when it comes to dark electronic music. I have a small circle of friends whose music taste and creative activities definitely impact my own. However, the fact of living where I live, in the borderland of Eastern and Northern Europe, with its dark cold winters, undoubtedly plays a role too.

You’ve cited various inspirations for your music, from Nick Cave to nighttime wanderings. Were there any new or unexpected sources of inspiration for ‘Mire of Mercury‘?”

Yes, but the core comes from a personal connection, a lived experience or a perspective on something. All my albums are about a state of being, and I try to find metaphors to that essence, alongside looking into what other artists and authors have expressed while working with similar ideas and themes, to broaden the scope. “Dead Woman” draws thematic material from Julia Kristeva’s Black Sun; “Solar Animus” relies on the thoughts of C. G. Jung in Mysterium Coniunctionis; “Litha” is about the two-day Midsummer celebrations we’ve been having for the past five years at my friend’s countryside; “Blood Citadel” is a love song, possibly the first one I’ve written. A big portion of the album was indeed written and produced at night, I stayed up until morning many times. It was interesting how sleep deprivation opened up new channels for ideas. I don’t think I want to do it again though, I’ve slept like a baby since the album was finished.

The visuals in your music videos and live performances play a significant role in your artistic expression. How did you approach the visual aspect for Mire of Mercury?

The visuals are a complementary component here, I think. In the past, I’ve sometimes come up with video and visual ideas parallell with the music, but this time I had the music already finished, before finding and linking the visual elements to it. I just knew I wanted to be in the water on the cover and have the silver tone represented. But, you know, my face is covered and the visuals are not too dominant, the music itself is quite visual, psychedelic even.

You’ve discussed the importance of experimentation in your music. Were there any new techniques or approaches you experimented with in this latest album?

My process itself is an experiment every time as I don’t follow a routine and I always want to start from a different part of the song. I used more samples on this one – I’ve previously mostly used synths and some of my own recordings of the instruments I played myself, but this time I’ve worked with samples more. Regarding lyrics, I had a few sessions of writing in the stream of consciousness and writing words on pieces of paper, putting them into a bowl and taking random pieces out to generate new concepts and ideas. The latter turned out to be useful only in the meditative qualities of the process, and not the results themselves.

You’ve mentioned that your music creation is driven more by feelings and contexts rather than following a specific sound. Can you share how this approach influenced the creation of ‘Mire of Mercury’?

First I think about what I want to express and then about how to express it and all the creative choices to do that. This is elementary. I’m not sure how to explain how this influences the creation as for me, this is the creation.

The track “Tantalus” from “Mire of Mercury” seems to carry a deep mythological significance. Could you elaborate on the inspiration behind this song and its connection to Greek mythology? Are there any other myths, stories or narratives pervading the songs or themes in the album?

Actually “Tantalus” was written back in 2018 in tandem with my song “Niobe”, which was on my debut album. Eventually, “Tantalus” was left out of the album, I can’t remember exactly why, I probably needed to boot one song and it seemed to be too experimental or something. When I came upon it again, I found it to be fascinating and very suitable for this album. The song changes and transforms the feeling of being condemned in the underworld to something else. Both Tantalus and Niobe were punished and damned for their own actions and their legacies serve as cautionary tales. I’ve shifted the perspective and imagined their stories through their eyes, adding more layers to their myths. Maybe it’s like the weird interest in evil people, criminal minds, their past and experiences – we want to make sense of this nonsense of evil, to understand how it came to be. As if finding something redeemable could make humanity more human again.

You have a background in photography and visual arts. How do these disciplines influence your songwriting and music production? It seems to me that each album has a color scheme / story of sorts.

I don’t have synesthesia or anything, so I don’t see music in colours, but when an album is taking shape, I usually feel driven to go for a certain look or feel when it comes to album art and design. Sublime Malaise was surrounded in the ill-inducing worn-out beige, Bending the Iron Bough had its roots wrapped around an earthly green, and Mire of Mercury has a rose-tinted palette, more vivid than before. And for me it is the brightest album of mine, as I was emerging from and drifting away from a depressed state – and even though the path is never linear, there was a sense of overcoming – I was making room for positive change like drinking less and unlearning other harmful habits.

In the past, you’ve spoken about the challenges and rewards of performing live. How has it been translating the songs from “Mire of Mercury” into a live setting?

It has been very easy and fun to play these songs live, they translate well to stage, and I wish we could play more. I’m constantly hearing that it’s difficult to pair Bedless Bones with other bands as we are “too special” – whatever that means. I guess we’ll just have to patiently pave our own way and find our special opportunities.

Collaboration has been a part of your artistic journey. Are there any collaborations on “Mire of Mercury,” and how do these collaborations enhance the album?

No, this album was written, recorded and produced in total solitude and not heard by anyone until it was finished. There was supposed to be a guest vocal appearance on “Tongue and Rhythm”, but unfortunately the artist was eventually unable to do it. As I’m a part of other bands, where I can enjoy the collaborative process and co-creation, I’m quite content with the creative freedom I have with Bedless Bones as a solo endeavor. There’s a pleasure, even if it’s perhaps self-indulgent, in having your successes and failures to yourself and not having any would haves or should haves eating away at your conscience because you’ve sacrificed your own vision to compromise. I’m not excluding the idea of opening up to future collaborations, though. If it feels right, it is absolutely a possibility.

Finally, “Mire of Mercury” has a unique and intriguing title. Can you share the story or meaning or ant musings behind this title and how it represents the album’s themes

I’d rather invite people to listen to the album, to feel Mire of Mercury and imagine what it is and where it takes them. Everyone’s reflections are as valid as my intentions.

Out on double vinyl via Other Voices on January 5th 2024 is a reissue of the Muslimgauze album “Intifaxa”. This is the first part in a series of 4 double vinyl albums with bonus songs, previously released on CD between 1990 and 1994 on the Australian cult label Extreme Music.

“Intifaxa” is full of heavy percussion mixed with deep tribal grooves, embedded in modulated field recordings. The original tracks were remastered for this first time ever vinyl release. New sleeve designs were created by Oleg Galay, who already did a number of artworks for Muslimgauze reissues.

All 4 album covers will be made from extra heavy cardboard with deluxe spot UV finish and inside print.

The production style was raw and unpolished, contributing to the distinctive and immersive soundscapes that became synonymous with Muslimgauze.

The project gained a cult following for its unflinching political stance and unique sound. However, it remained largely underground, with Jones preferring to release his music on small independent labels and maintaining a low personal profile.

On 30 December 1998, Jones was rushed to A&E in Manchester with a rare fungal infection in his bloodstream, for which he had to be heavily sedated. He contracted pneumonia and died on 14 January 1999. Despite his passing, Muslimgauze’s music continues to be influential in the experimental and electronic music scenes, revered for its pioneering approach to sound and its uncompromising artistic vision.

Das WISDOM TOOTH FESTIVAL geht 2024 in eine neue Runde: Gefeiert wird am 12. und 13. Juli 2023 am “Wildbachstadion” Hochstein in 86657 Bissingen. Tickets gibt es ab sofort zum Preis von 82,-€ über den offiziellen Festival-Shop im Vorverkauf.

Als erster Headliner wurden nun EQUILIBRIUM bestätigt, die 2024 zum ersten Mal auf dem Festival zu Gast sein werden.

Schon seit Juli bestätigt sind INFECTED RAIN, die eigentlich schon für 2023 vorgesehen waren, aber aufgrund von terminlichen Überschneidungen letztlich absagen mussten. Weiterhin mit dabei sind TROLLFAUST, STONES OF JORDAN, NITROGEN sowie FRAGMENTATION.

Love, in its many forms, invariably leaves an indelible mark on us. Elvis was Chelsea Nenni’s first love. (Somebody in kindergarten told her he was dead, but she didn’t believe it.) Late Slip, a Brooklyn-based band, beautifully captures this universal truth in their music with the track aptly titled, “New York City”.

In the ever-evolving circus of the music world, Late Slip is the new act everyone’s whispering about. They’re stirring up the NYC scene with their ‘country-punk’ concoction, a genre blend that’s as hard to pin down as a greased pig at a county fair. Imagine a musical stew with a generous helping of Blondie’s punk-rock zing, a sprinkle of Link Wray’s guitar growl, a dollop of The Cramps’ psychobilly flair, the Go-Gos, Altered Images, 1960s girl groups like The Crystals, and, for a twist, a dash of Dolly Parton’s country sparkle.

New York City blends a nostalgic mix of styles, intertwining a bit of twang, a whisper of surf, and a rich depth of emotion deeply echoing the listener’s personal narratives of love and yearning. It’s a love letter to her adopted home, written during a time of separation.

“I left New York City 5 years ago and regretted it pretty much immediately,” she says. “I started writing this song about how bummed out I was during lockdown in March 2020. It started off as a lil’ pity party, but as the song took shape over the years, it eventually became a love song. I’ve lived in a lot of places and I really do love New York City the most.”

During an exceptionally frigid winter in a snug East Village apartment, Bay Area transplant Chelsea Nenni found solace in teaching herself guitar. What began as a strategy to combat seasonal depression evolved into a powerful medium for expressing profound emotions. Now, equipped with just a few chords, Nenni transforms her personal experiences of unrequited love and homesickness into songs that resonate with universal themes, capturing the essence of human experience in her music.

“It’s just different in New York City somehow,” she muses, taking her dogs out for a run in the chilly autumn afternoon. “It’s insane to choose this life sometimes for so many reasons, but I also value and share the human connections and sense of community in New York. It is kind of batshit crazy and hard to be here, so those of us who choose it are really choosing it. We support each other in that because we all know what it takes to be here!”

Nenni’s voice packs a punch stronger than a double shot of espresso. She studied opera in college, but explains that ‘Gwen Stefani gave her the guts to be in a band.’ Her range stretches wider than the Grand Canyon, bringing a veritable smorgasbord of strength and versatility to the table. Nenni’s formidable vocal gymnastics dazzle; Late Slip’s hooks stick in your mind. Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Nikki Lane, Fidlar), came on board for production. The tune is as memorable as your first love’s phone number, crafted with a flair that’s both engaging and surprisingly comforting.

Die finnische Doom Metal-Band MALSTEN setzt die Geschichte ihres Debütalbums “The Haunting of Silvåkra Mill” fort: Am 15. März 2024 erscheint das zweite Kapitel “The Haunting of Silvåkra Mill – Rites of Passage” via Svart Records.

Die erste Single gibt es seit heute: “Larum” als Stream. Ein weiterer Vorabsong mit dem Titel “Path of the Nix” wird am 9. Februar 2024 veröffentlicht.

Mit “Outside Time” wird in einigen Tagen die neue EP der Post / Pop Punk-Band THE TRUDY erscheinen. Die Scheibe folgt auf das 2016er-Album “Always Never Beautiful Forever” des englischen Trios, das bereits 1979 von Del Tagg und Peter Tagg gegründet worden ist. Komplettiert wird die Band von Melissa Jo Heathcote.

“Outside Time” wird am 8. Dezember 2023 via Miron Music erscheinen.

Esa Holopainen hat es 2021 mit “Silver Lake” getan, nun bringt auch der zweite AMORPHIS-Gitarrist Tomi Koivusaari ein Soloalbum raus: Unter dem Namen BJØRKØ veröffentlicht er am 1. Dezember 2023 das Album “Heartrot” –  zudem gibt es nun auch ein Video zu “Whitebone Wind” bei YouTube. Bei den Song hat Marko Hietala (TAROT; ex-NIGHTWISH, NORTHERN KINGS) den Gesang zusammen mit Petronella Nettermalm übernommen.

Tomi Koivusaari geht mit seinem Soloalbum einen anderen Weg als sein Kollege Holopainen und setzt zumindest mit der ersten Single “The Heartroot Rots” auf Death Metal auf statt gediegene Rockmusik.  Für die Single hat Koivusaari Jeff Walker von CARCASS als Gastsänger engagiert, zum Song gibt es auch ein Video bei YouTube.

Nun überrascht Tomi Koivussaari mit der zweiten Single, für die er mit der finnischen Folksängerin Mariska zusammengearbeitet hat – zum Song gibt es ein Video bei YouTube.

“Ursprünglich war das Stück ein schwebendes zehnminütiges Instrumentalstück mit einem sich langsam aufbauenden Crescendo zum Ende hin. Als Mariska zustimmte, mitzuspielen und den Gesang zu übernehmen, musste ich den Song in eine traditionellere Form umgestalten. Ich habe Mariska die Freiheit gelassen, den Text und die Gesangsmelodie zu schreiben. Sie ist authentisch und sie hat Stil. Sie passt perfekt zur Atmosphäre des Songs und ist außerdem eine der besten Texterinnen des Landes”, so Koivusaari.

 

Das komplette Album beschreibt Tomi Koivusaari als Sammlung verschiedener Stile und erklärt auch, warum er die Band nach einer schwedischen Insel benannt hat:

“Das Album ist eine Sammlung unterschiedlicher Songs und verschiedener Blickwinkel, Ich wollte meine künstlerische Freiheit nicht einschränken. ‘Heartrot’ ist sehr persönlich und natürlich der Musik beeinflusst, die ich im Laufe der Jahre gemacht habe. Es ist wie ein Soundtrack zu einem imaginären Film. Leitmotive des Albums sind eine starke Verbindung zur Natur und Gemütszustände, die selten glücklich oder positiv sind. Melancholie ist immer zu spüren.”

Eingespielt haben “Heartrot” Drummer Waltteri Väyrynen (OPETH, ex-PARADISE LOST), Bassist Lauri Porra (STRATOVARIUS) und Keyboarder Janne Lounatvuori (HIDRIA SPACEFOLK). Die Hälfte der Texte schrieb Jussi “Juice” Ahlroth, der zusammen mit Koivusaaris bei ABHORRENCE aktiv war. Als Sänger engagierte Koivusaari neben Jeff Walker unter anderem auch Addi Tryggvason (SOLSTAFIR), Marko Hietala (TAROT; ex-NIGHTWISH, NORTHERN KINGS), Stian Thoresen (DIMMU BORGIR) Tomi Joutsen (AMORPHIS).

“Jussi und ich haben gemeinsam an den Texte gearbeitet, sie bieten viel Raum für Fantasie und sind offen für viele Interpretationen. Einige der Sänger (Mariska, Ismo Alanko, Jessi Frey und Addi Tryggvason) haben ihre eigenen Texte geschrieben, während die anderen (Stian Thoresen, Jeff Walker, Petronella Nettermalm, Marko Hietala und Tomi Joutsen) Ahlroths Texte interpretieren. Das Album wurde von meinem langjährigen Freund Nino Laurenne produziert.”

Ursprünglich wollte Tomi Koivusaari das Solalbum bereits vor gut 15 Jahren zu seinem 40. Geburtstag veröffentlichen, fand aber nie die Zeit, es fertigzustellen. Erst in den Pandemiejahren 2020 und 2021, als keine Touren möglich waren, beendete er Songwriting und Aufnahmen.

BRUCE DICKINSON veröffentlicht am 1. März 2024 sein siebtes Soloalbum. Für “The Mandrake Project” hat sich Dickinson wieder mit Produzent Roy Z zusammengetan.

Nun ist die erste Single erschienen, zu „Afterglow of Ragnarok” gibt auch ein Video auf YouTube.

Dickinson hat sich bewusst für diesen Song als ersten Vorgeschmack auf das Album entschieden:

„Es war wichtig, mit diesem Stück den Ton des Projekts vorzugeben. Passend zum Titel ist es ein harter Song, der von einem großen Riff angetrieben wird, aber es gibt auch eine echte Melodie im Refrain, die das Licht und die Schattierungen zeigt, die der Rest des Albums mit sich bringt. Und wartet nur, bis ihr das Video seht!”

Dickinson will die neuen Songs auch live vorstellen:

“Dieses Album war eine sehr persönliche Reise für mich und ich bin extrm stolz darauf. Roy Z und ich haben es seit Jahren geplant, geschrieben und aufgenommen, und ich freue mich sehr darauf, dass die Leute es endlich hören werden. Und noch mehr freue ich mich auf die Aussicht, mit dieser fantastischen Band, die wir zusammengestellt haben, auf Tour zu gehen und das Album zum Leben erwecken zu können. Wir planen, so viele Shows wie möglich zu spielen, an so vielen Orten wie möglich, für so viele Menschen wie möglich! Und was ‘The Mandrake Project’ tatsächlich ist … das wird sich bald zeigen!”

Außerdem erscheint ein Comic zu „The Mandrake Project”:  Die von Bruce Dickinson erdachte, von Tony Lee geschriebene und von Staz Johnson für Z2 Comics illustrierte Serie umfasst 12 Episoden, die in drei Graphic Novels zusammengefasst sind und 2024 erscheinen werden. Ein achtseitiger Comic mit dem Titel „Afterglow Of Ragnarok”, der die Vorgeschichte zu „The Mandrake Project” erzählt, ist im Booklet der gleichnamigen 7″-Vinylsingle enthalten und bildet den Rahmen für die kommende Geschichte. Die 7″-Single enthält Dickinsons originale Solo-Demoversion des Songs „If Eternity Should Fail”, der erstmals 2015 auf Iron Maidens Album „The Book Of Souls” erschien.

Out via Bureau B on February 9th is the all new Karl Bartos (former member Kraftwerk) soundtrack “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” which includes narrative film music and sound design for Robert Wiene’s classic 1920 psychological thriller. The film comes digitally restored in 4K by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Foundation.

Musician and writer Karl Bartos has long been an admirer of Weimar-era culture. During his time in Kraftwerk, he helped create the stunning track ‘Metropolis’, directly inspired by a band viewing of the classic 1927 Fritz Lang film of the same name. The original orchestral music composed for “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” by Giuseppe Becce had long been lost and in 2005, after watching the film, Bartos imagined what it would be like, to create an entirely new one in the 21st Century in his home studios in Hamburg.

“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” is his first piece of film music and sound design. The release is planned on double vinyl and digipak CD.

About Karl Bartos

Born in Germany in 1952, sound, music and culture have been a lifelong fascination for Karl. He studied at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Düsseldorf, played at the Deutsche Oper and was in several experimental bands before he joined Kraftwerk for their Autobahn tour of the US in 1975. He co-composed tracks and performed with the band until 1990 and is featured on the seminal albums “Radio-Activity” (1975), “Trans-Europe Express” (1977), “The Man-Machine” (1978), “Computer World” (1981), “Electric Café” (1986) and “The Mix” (1991).

After leaving Kraftwerk, he first formed the band Elektric Music (2 albums in 1993+1998), collaborated with Bernard Sumner (New Order), Johnny Marr (The Smiths) for their Electronic band project and with Andy McCluskey (OMD), and released two well-regarded solo albums (2003 & 2013).

Out now is the new Front Line Assembly remix of their 2018 hit single “Mechvirus” featuring vocals written and recorded by labelmates Ultra Sunn. The two bands will meet again this coming April at Sick New World Festival and will set out on respective North American tours in 2024. All dates are listed below.

“Mechvirus” was originally released on Front Line Assembly’s 2018 album, “WarMech”. On the new remix, Ultra Sunn comments: “We loved working on this remix. Front Line Assembly really does research into very specific sound material and particularly for this track.Adding vocals was quite natural for us. We wrote a text about the relationship with the truth. When two people share a moment, they are actually the only ones who have the truth, no matter how it has been twisted afterwards. We are happy to have been able to use these ingredients and put our sound, our signature on it. We made it a danceable tune with our “Sound of Belgium” heritage, while trying to bring a freshness of our time.”

Die Goth Rocker WISBORG schicken den ersten Vorboten ihres neuen Albums ins Rennen. Produziert wurde das Album Chris Harms, dem LORD OF THE LOST Sänger. Bei der Single „Im freien Fall“ hat es sich Chris nicht nehmen lassen und eigene Gesangsparts zum Duett beigesteuert. Der Videoclip wurde während der gemeinsamen Clubtournee aufgenommen und zeigt die androgyne Band Wisborg von ihrer betörendsten, aber auch rockigsten Seite. Die Black Metal-Band VORGA hat mit “Beyond the Palest Star” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Striving Toward Oblivion” (2022) das zweite Album der Deutschen aus Karlsruhe und soll im ersten Quartal 2024 via Transcending Obscurity Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track  “Voideath” als Audiostream bei YouTube zu hören.

Ebenfalls als Preview-Song verfügabr ist die Single “Tragic Humanity“.

“Beyond the Palest Star” sei laut Band eine Platte über die Einsamkeit, die jeder in seinem eigenen Kopf fühlt und wie sich das vor dem Hintergrund unserer verzweifelten und kaputten Welt anfühlt.

Out via Apocalyptic Vision on December 21st is the all new Sopor Aeternus album “The Rules”.

The full-length album is part 3 of the current Sopor Aeternus trilogy, which is based on an actual boardgame. Like part 1 (“Alone At Sam’s – An Evening with…”) and part 2 (“The Colours”), “The Rules” was also recorded and produced at TidalWave Studios and is part of a larger total work of art.

“The Rules” will be available in two editions, a double LP one and on CD.

ANGRA veröffentlichten ihr zehntes Album: “Cycles Of Pain” erschien am 3. November 2023 via Atomic Fire Records auf CD, LP sowie digital. Darauf enthalten sind insgesamt zwölf Tracks, darunter auch “Vida Seca”, zu dem die Band nun ein Video bei YouTube geteilt hat. Außerdem gibt es mit “Gods Of The World” einen weiteren Video-Clip. Ebenfalls verfügbar: die Single “Tide Of Changes“.

“Wir leben in einem Moment großer Instabilität, und während unser Ego die Komfortzone und die Kontrolle sucht, ist es von grundlegender Bedeutung, sich an diese Unbeständigkeit anzupassen, auf den Wellen des Schicksals zu surfen und nicht auf unseren Erwartungen”, sagt Gitarrist Rafael Bittencourt.

Zur ersten Single “Ride Into The Storm” gibt es auch ein Video. Gitarrist Rafael Bittencourt führt aus:

“Dieses Werk ist aus vielerlei Gründen eine besondere Angelegenheit für uns: Zuallererst ist seit unserer letzten Veröffentlichung in 2018 natürlich viel geschehen. Persönlich, aber auch kollektiv mussten wir in den vergangenen fünf Jahren schwere Zeiten durchmachen, während wir eine Achterbahnfahrt der Gefühle durchlebten, die Herausforderungen, Frust, Ruhm und Erfolg mit sich brachte, woraus wir letztendlich enorm viel Inspiration für potenzielle Textthemen beziehen konnten. 2019 starb erst mein Vater, ehe wenige Monate später auch Andre Matos von uns ging. Zwei Ereignisse, die mein Leben immens beeinflusst haben, aber auch die Sorgen der anderen Bandmitglieder sollen nicht außer Acht gelassen werden.

»Cycles Of Pain« ist äußerst kompakt und steckt voller Erlebnisse und geballtem Schmerz. Auch wenn wir uns aktuell in einer tollen Lage befinden, behandelt das Album doch unterschiedliche Arten von Schmerz und beleuchtet diese aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln: Was uns wie wehtut, die Läuterung, das Trauma, die Narben. Einerseits wollen wir von Geburt an jegliches Leid vermeiden, andererseits werden wir aber auch tagtäglich mit ihm konfrontiert. Es gibt kein Entkommen, es ist ein endloser Kreislauf. Wir wollen den Schmerz von uns fernhalten, doch ist es schließlich er, der uns im Alltag formt und reifen lässt. Inmitten dieser tiefgründigen Thematik wollen aber aber auch allen Menschen, die mit Problemen zu kämpfen haben, Hoffnung und Trost spenden. Ich bin mir sicher, dass diese Scheibe Licht in die dunklen Leben vieler Leute bringen wird, während es zeitgleich neue Maßstäbe für unseren eigenen Stil setzt.“

Zur Besetzung der brasilianischen Progressive-Power-Metal-Band gehört aktuell auch Sänger Fabio Lione (u.a. ATHENA XIX, ex-RHAPSODY OF FIRE, ex-VISION DIVINE). Darüber hinaus enthält die Platte Gastbeiträge von Amanda Somerville, Lenine, Vanessa Moreno sowie Juliana D’Agostini. Produziert hat “Cycles Of Pain” Dennis Ward, Mix und Mastering ließ man im deutschen The TrakShak erledigen.

Der Musiker, Sänger und Bassist David Vincent ist eine Ikone des Death Metal - eine der extremsten Musikformen, die je unseren Planeten erobert hat. The legendary Belgian label Antler returns. Pioneering in the 80s and 90s and an absolute vanguard in the world of post-punk, cold- and new wave, EBM, electro… a series of albums and compilations from the extensive Antler archives are now being re-released. Following the earlier released remastered version of the double album of the Limburg Cold Wavers Siglo XX, a first compilation of tracks from the early period of the label: “Antler Records – Early Years Vol. 1” is now following.

Roland Beelen: “For almost half a century, Antler has been my life, my love, and my soul. I founded Antler Records more than 40 years ago. In the early days, I was not only chasing my own dreams, but those of many new and groundbreaking bands in Belgium in an exciting new world of music and an emerging music scene. After the collaboration with Maurice Engelen, there was no turning back. Our label has broken barriers in many different genres with our joint forces, from dark electro, EBM, pop, dance and techno, singer-songwriter to even reggae. It’s now 2023 and I’m proud to put parts of this legacy back in the spotlight with a series of releases and reissues. After more than 40 years, Antler will come back to life and bring joy to all fans who have cherished the label over the years.”

The history of Antler

Neue Sachlichkeit and their single “Ice/Painless Rage” was the last release on Roland Beelen’s Kleo Label and came out in 1981. It also became the first release on the Antler label founded after a meeting in café De Knoet in Aarschot with Maurice Engelen. Kleo Records became Antler Records and both gentlemen entered into a collaboration that would last until 2005. Beelen had a serious accident and withdrew from the music biz in 2005, Engelen continued with Praga Khan and Lords of Acid.

In 1995, Antler (by then transformed into Antler-Subway Records) entered into a collaboration with EMI Records. The legendary Belgian alternative-new wave catalog was supplemented with a series of striking and still current and unforgettable Belpop hits in 2023. From 1995 onwards, even more Belgian and international hits were scored and millions of records and CDs were sold, including Black Uhuru, 2 Fabiola, Kate Ryan, Milk Inc, Lasgo, Ian van Dahl, but also Praga Khan, Lords of Acid and in Belgium Leopold 3)

With the disappearance of EMI Records and EMI Music, the label was swept under the rug, archives were lost and Antler eventually ended up at Warner Music via Universal after wanderings.

Starman Records acquired the right from Warner Music in 2022 to use the name Antler and Antler-Subway again to breathe new life into the more than 40-year-old label. Two compilations (vinyl only) with the rarest and long-lost tracks from the early Antler period were compiled by Lieven De Ridder (Walhalla Records) with the greatest care and remastered by Pieter De Wagter. The first of these: “Antler Records – Early Years Vol. 1” will be released on January 5, 2024.

Siglo XX returns as well, more or less

Also to be re-released on Antler will be the Siglo XX “Double album” which is the last album of the Limburg coldwave band that appeared on the Antler label. The release is the result of the last artistic collaboration between Roland Beelen and Siglo XX in the mid-1980s. The record is considered a masterpiece and numerous renowned artists from the then Belgo-Manchester Scene collaborated on it.

Die schwedische Rock-Band TAKIDA stellt ihr neues Album “The Agony Flame” mit einem Video zur Single “Third Strike” bei YouTube vor. Zuvor war das Stück bereits als Lyric-Video bei YouTube verfügbar.

Reinhören ist außerdem in den Song “Your Blood Awaits You” möglich, zu dem es ebenfalls ein Lyric-Video bei YouTube gibt.

Zuvor schlossen die Skandinavier im Sommer 2023 einen Plattenvertrag mit Napalm Records ab. Zum Deal äußert sich die Formation kurz und bündig:

“Aufregende Zeiten stehen vor der Tür und wir können es kaum erwarten, die Zusammenarbeit mit Napalm Records zu beginnen. Let’s do this!”

Frisch unter dem Dach von Napalm Records präsentierten TAKIDA zugleich die Single “The Loneliest Hour” mit einem Videoclip bei YouTube.

In the high-pressure, high-stakes whirlwind of urban life, the struggle to keep pace can be overwhelming. Irish post-punk quartet Scattered Ashes, hailing from the city of Dublin, captures this sentiment with poignant clarity in their latest track, “Take Another Piece.” This heartfelt anthem was penned in support for those battling the relentless demands of city living and asserts that there is more to life than the corporate grind.

Scattered Ashes continue to impress with their distinct sound. Their music is a blend of the raw and the captivating, marked by razor-sharp guitar riffs and prophetic vocals that seem to resonate with the listener’s innermost thoughts. “Take Another Piece” showcases this signature style but takes it a step further: the track is structured as a powerful ballad, but it evolves, gaining momentum and emotional intensity, climaxing in a chorus that can only be described as anthemic.

The lyrics of “Take Another Piece” are a beacon of empathy and understanding in a world that often feels cold and unyielding. “Though your eyes may sometimes deceive you, you should know, that these arms will always receive you,” the band asserts, offering a message of unwavering support and solidarity. In these words, there’s an acknowledgment of life’s illusions and deceptions, but also a promise of refuge and acceptance.

JUDAS PRIEST veröffentlichen am  8. März 2024 ihr neues Studioalbum ‘Invincible Shield’ , jetzt reicht die Band zur zweiten Single “Trial By Fire” ein Video bei YouTube nach.

Das Lyrics-Video zu “Trial By Fire” stellen JUDAS PRIEST bereits Mitte November vor. Als erste Single teilten die Briten im Oktober ein Lyrics-Video zu “Panic Attack”.

Das 19. Album der Heavy Metal-Band erscheint über Columbia Records.

Im kommenden Jahr sind JUDAS PRIEST auch wieder auf Tour, die Tour beginnt am 11. März 2024 in Glasgow und führt die Band im März und im Juli nach Deutschland. Karten sind bereits im Vorverkauf erhältlich.

Im kommenden Jahr findet das PROPHECY FEST in der Balver Höhle vom 5. bis 7. September 2024 statt. Nun haben die Veranstalter drei weitere Bands bekannt gegeben, die 2024 spielen: PARADISE LOST, FEN und ARÐ.

 

Das Billing des PROPHECY FEST 2024
Schon im September 2023 wurden die ersten Bands bestätigt: EMPYRIUM werden ihr Album “Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays” auf die Bühne bringen. Außerdem spielen DOOL, ARTHUR BROWN, IN THE WOODS… und PERCHTA, PARADISE LOST, FEN und ARÐ.

Der Kartenvorverkauf für die 2024-Ausgabe des Festivals startete am Sonntag, 10. September 2023 um 20 Uhr. Das Ticket kostet 139 €. BesucherInnen des PROPHECY FEST 2023 können zwischen dem 7. und 9. September 2023 bereits auf dem Festival ihr Ticket für das kommende Jahr kaufen.

Am 15. und 16. März 2024 findet in der MatriX Königsbrunn bei Augsburg (PLZ 86343) das MAMMUT FESTIVAL 2024 statt.

Tickets für das Event gibt es für 33,-€ über die offizielle Festival-Website. Tagestickets schlagen mit 18,-€ (Freitag) bzw. 22,-€ (Samstag) zu Buche. Der Eintritt für Kinder unter 14 Jahren ist frei, müssen allerdings von einem Personensorgeberechtigten begleitet werden.
