NEAL MORSE hat nach “Cosmic Mess” mit “I Hate My Brothers” einen weiteren Video-Clip seines kommenden Albums “The Restoration – Joseph: Part Two” veröffentlicht. Die Progressive Rock Opera, deren erster Teil am 11. August 2023 erschienen ist, kann als Fortsetzung von “Jesus Christ the Exorcist” gelten.

Der erste Teil der Rock Opera endete damit, dass Joseph zu Unrecht eingekerkert wurde. Im zweiten Teil wird die biblische Erzählung fortgesetzt und berichtet, wie Josephs Weisheit und Intelligenz ihn zum Vizekönig von Ägypten und schließlich zur Wiedervereinigung mit seiner Familie führten.

Neben NEAL MORSE, der den Protagonisten Jospeh verkörpert, treten gesanglich auch Nick D’Virgilio (SPOCK’S BEARD), Ted Leonard (SPOCK’S BEARD, PATTERN SEEKING ANIMALS), Matt Smith (THEOCRACY), Ross Jennings (HAKEN), Jake Livgren (PROTO-KAW, KANSAS) und Alan Morse (SPOCK’S BEARD) auf.

Die Melodic Death Metal-Band AEOLIAN hat nach nach Lyric-Video zu “The Miracle” nun einen Video-Clip vom Titeltrack ihres neuen Albums “Echoes of the Future” veröffentlicht.

Das dritte Album der Spanier schließt eine Trilogie ab, die mit “The Silent Witness” (2018) begann, das die Größe und Widerstandsfähigkeit der Natur und die Gefahr, der wir ihr zerbrechliches Gleichgewicht unterwerfen, erforschte, und “The Negationist” (2020) weiterging, das in einer Gegenwart spielt, in der wir uns weigern zu sehen, wie der Mensch dieses Gleichgewicht beeinflusst und bedroht hat.

Auf “Echoes of the Future” begibt sich AEOLIAN auf eine Reise durch die nächsten Jahrhunderte und versetzt uns in die Rolle unserer Gegenstücke aus einer nicht allzu fernen Zukunft, die uns auf einer Reise durch die Schwierigkeiten und großen Dilemmata der Menschheit beim Überleben auf einem zunehmend unwirtlichen Planeten begleiten werden.

“Echoes of the Future” wurde von Dan Swanö gemixt und gemastert und ist am 10. November 2023 via Black Lion Records erschienen.

The gothic rock ensemble The Waning Moon has recently launched their inaugural album titled “A Dream Or A Vision”, showcasing a collection of ten tracks. “A Dream or a Vision” is released through Danse Macabre Records and lLyrically wanders through dark and haunting emotional landscapes, tragic love stories and deep dark introspections.

The Waning Moon, primarily driven by guitar, revives the quintessential gothic rock sound of the 80s and 90s, infusing it with a contemporary essence. The band features a global collaboration with Ariel Maniki from Costa Rica, known for her work with Ariel Maniki and the Black Halos, and Zac Campbell from the USA, associated with The Kentucky Vampires. The group’s live performances are further enriched by Ian Joseph on bass and Maggie Campbell on keyboards.

Their debut album, available for digital download and in limited vinyl and CD formats, should resonate with enthusiasts of bands like Nosferatu, Christian Death, The Mission, Suspiria, and others from the gothic rock domain.

Holger Schmenk & Andreas Schiffmann: Kumpels in Kutten 3: Heavy Metal im Ruhrgebiet

Wie jetzt, ein drittes Buch zum Thema Metal im Ruhrgebiet – ist nicht irgendwann mal gut damit? Nicht dass wir uns hier im Ruhrgebiet für etwas Besonderes halten würden, doch die weltweite Rezeption von Kreator, Sodom, Axel Rudi Pell & Co. beweist deren anhaltende Wichtigkeit. Es ist Zeit, den Fragen nachzugehen, inwiefern die Ruhrpott-Szene Spuren in allen Himmelsrichtungen hinterlassen hat und wie stark die Bands, Labels und Konzertveranstalter schon seit den 80ern miteinander vernetzt waren. Wir blicken dazu mit zahlreichen Interviewpartnern und Gastbeiträgen auf das Ruhrgebiet selbst sowie in den Osten der Republik, aber auch in die Mitte, den Süden, nach Schweden oder in die USA – vom Tapetrading bis zur global vernetzten Szene der Gegenwart.

Out via Amour Records is solo project by Marsheaux member Sophia Sarigiannidou. Now active as Aspra her debut single “Velvet/Anoint” now comes re-released as a limited edition 7 inch single (300 copies) on white vinyl. The set also holds a (folded) A2-sized colour poster, the whole comes inside an outer plastic bag.

“Velvet” is a rework of the shoegaze track by Big Pink and was released already last year. “Anoint”‘,” is originally by The Field Mice.

Both tracks were written and recorded during the lockdown at Sarigiannidou’s studio in Athens, Greece. This is the first ever new material by (one half of) Marsheaux, after their split. The Greek electro girl duo released their fifth (and last) studio album “Ath.Lon” in June 2016.

Greek darkwave outfit Reflection Black, led by Elis Alex of Ravencult and Nigredo fame, has unveiled their latest single, A Silver Dagger To Our Throats.

Emerging from Athens’ bustling cityscape, Reflection Black breathes new life into the goth genre, melding 21st-century darkness with a mystical flair. The band layers haunting synths, weaves them with complex guitar work, and hooks listeners with melodic vocals. Their sound is a nod to goth pioneers like The Sisters of Mercy, Midnight Oil, and The Mission, while also echoing contemporary acts like She Past Away, Drab Majesty, and Twin Tribes. Intriguingly, Elis Alex’s metal roots seep through with occasional nods to early Metallica, adding a unique twist to their music.

Reflection Black have now become a 4-piece with the addition of George Foukarakis on guitar, and they are working towards a darker and more organic direction.

A Silver Dagger To Our Throats ventures boldly into deeper, more foreboding territories. This new piece amplifies the intensity, weaving together pulsating bass lines and shimmering synths with sharp, crystalline guitar work. The track navigates a complex musical landscape, balancing melodic harmonies with dissonant undertones, contributing to an overall atmosphere that’s both haunting and captivating. The band’s signature infectious vocal hooks remain a standout feature, but they now carry a tinge of bitter existentialism. The lyrics offer a profound exploration into the darker aspects of spiritual alchemy, adding a rich, contemplative layer to the already dynamic composition.

The lyrics present a profound and sombre meditation on the existential struggles of life. They evoke a sense of disintegration and decay, symbolized by the imagery of the soul being torn and degraded into something unrecognizable, akin to black matter. The recurring motif of blood filling with rust, a consequence of nails piercing the heart, suggests a process of internal corrosion, both physically and spiritually.

The use of the silver dagger as a metaphor, held to the throat by life itself, powerfully conveys the constant and inescapable threat of mortality and existential dread. This image captures the tension between life’s beauty and its inherent peril. The concept of becoming “void shadows” reflects a transformation into a state of emptiness or non-existence, a loss of essence or identity. This portrays a world devoid of the traditional spiritual balance and harmony, emphasizing a more nihilistic and desolate perspective on human existence.

“…The atmosphere feels strikingly more menacing than the one of the album,” muses Elis Alex. “The lyrics touch upon the alchemical Magnum Opus or Great Work, but end up with the conclusion that “There is no pure gold” and “As above, no below.” There is no triumphant ascension of the soul in the end, but only putrefaction.

(Photo by Kadri Sammel) Out now is the all new video from Bedless Bones, “Solar Animus”, taken from “Mire Of Mercury” – the new album by this Estonian electro-noir musician. “Mire Of Mercury” is already the third album by Bedless Bones and was released on Metropolis Records in early November.

“The video is directed and edited by me and filmed by [Bedless Bones drummer] Anders Melts,” explains Sammel. And she continues to explain the track itself: “The song is inspired by the contrasexual archetype in the unconscious. The predominance of the shadow extends to a possession, a chronic eclipse of the sun. Animus in anima. So she has to transform her Eros.”

Die Retro Rock-Band COOGANS BLUFF hat mit “Living in Danger” eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums “Balada” veröffentlicht. Beim Song geht es um den Teenager-Konflikt, “wenn einem bewusst wird, dass die eigenen Träume gesellschaftlich nicht tragbar sind oder wenn man diese doch ausleben möchte, man schnell am Rande der Gesellschaft landet und nicht akzeptiert wird.”

“Balada” wird am 26. Januar 2024 via Noisolution erscheinen. Im Anschluss begibt sich die Band auf Tour.

The Serbian industrial rock band dreDDup has been working hard lately on it’s video productions. “Cherry Noble” is the second single from the upcoming eleventh studio album “Pan/Dora” scheduled for a release in mid 2024 via Crime:Scene Records.

The video for the single was directed by Mihajlo Obrenov with the help of AI. It represents a critique of today’s society. In less than a month, dreDDup will enter it’s 27th year of existence and besides “Pan/Dora” they’ve been working on two more albums simultaneously.

About dreDDup

dreDDup is based in Novi Sad, Serbia and has been active since June 1997. Their first release, “Abnormal Walz”, featured a sound ranging from experimental electronics and techno to electro punk. It was followed by their first full-length album, “Mr Borndead’s Feast” which was released in 2004. In August 2007 the band landed the album “Future Porn Machine” offering a crossover sound. From that moment on, dreDDup labeled their music as being ‘massacre industrial’. The third album, “El Conquistadors”, came out late in 2008, the 4th was released in February 2011 simply titled “dreDDup” again offering a crossover of multiple electronic genres. Their fifth album was released in 2012 celebrating their 15th anniversary.

In late 2013 the band started working on their new record entitled “I dreamt of a Dragon” which was released at the end of 2014. For this album they abandoned their aggressive style of music and went for a more electronic and commercial sound. The album was self-released and the track “Etika” which was available on the free “Face The Beat: Session 2” compilation featured the legendary Dario Seraval from the Croatian/Slovenian cult industrial band Borghesia on vocals. It was one of 3 songs that the industrial outfit dreDDup sent us for inclusion on the compilation.

Das AREA 53 FESTIVAL geht 2024 in eine neue Runde: Vom 11. bis 13. Juli 2024 wird im österreichischen Leoben gefeiert. Tickets gibt es derzeit für ca. 129,-€ über die offizielle Festival-Homepage.

Jetzt haben die Organisatorenmit ALESTORM und WATCH THEM FAIL zwei weitere Bands bestätigt.

Zuvor gab man einen weiteren Haupt-Act bekannt: BEHEMOTH führen an der Seite des zweiten Headliners AVANTASIA das Billing an. Außerdem spielen DEARISCH 2024 auf dem Festival. Ebenfalls mit dabei sind ANGELUS APATRIDA und VERTILIZAR.

Die ersten Bands bestätigten die Veranstalter bereits vor einiger Zeit: AMORPHIS und KATATONIA ftreten in Leoben auf. Außerdem wurden ORDEN OGAN, DECAPITATED, 1349 sowie SKULL CRUSHER bestätigt.

According to an interview with the Canadian industrial music pioneers, Nivek Ogre and cEvin Key, in LA Weekly (published on November 30), Skinny Puppy will split up after this tour. Skinny Puppy formed in Vancouver in 1982. The group is among the founders of the industrial rock and electro-industrial genres. Initially envisioned as an experimental side-project by cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) while he was in the new wave band Images in Vogue, Skinny Puppy evolved into a full-time project with the addition of vocalist Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie).

Key acknowledges internal conflicts but emphasizes the joy and special nature of their last performances. Ogre from his side dismisses any notions of a future reunion: “People thinking that we’re gonna come back for a money grab in 10 years – it’s not gonna happen. In 10 years, I’ll be 70, so it’s definitely not gonna happen. But in five years or three years or whatever, it’s not gonna happen.”

The interview also reveals the complex dynamics between Ogre and Key, hinting at strained relations despite their mutual respect and admiration for each other’s talents. In the interview Key reflects on the band’s journey, expressing surprise at their longevity and satisfaction with their final tour. “I clearly remember saying in interviews back in the ’80s that there’s no way we’re gonna be doing this when we’re 60. So now we’re 60-plus, and it’s bizarre that we’re still going. (…) We have spent 40 years running that fine line between acrimony and getting work done.”

Discomfort with the ‘industrial music’ label

Ogre shares his evolution as an artist and person since the band’s inception in 1983. Discussing the authenticity of his early work, he seems to be disillusionised with the current state of music, which he feels often prioritizes commercial success over genuine emotion.

Ogre and Key also discuss their discomfort with the ‘industrial music‘ label, noting how the genre has evolved and diverged from its original ethos. Ogre says more precisely this: “As far as the scene goes, it seems to have devolved into more of a metal vibe, for the most part. All of the stuff that I loved about industrial music that came out of Genesis, with industrial records, or even going back to Stockhausen, all of that kind of, just freedom to do whatever with whatever. That’s the thing that’s missing in industrial music.”

Obituary sind zweifellos eine der härtesten, besten und bekanntesten amerikanischen Death Metal Bands. Die Truppe aus Brandon, Florida zählt zu den bedeutendsten Pionieren des Stils. Die extreme und markante Stimme von Growler John Tardy hat die Szene ebenso nachhaltig geprägt wie ihre brutalen Gitarrenriffs.

Der US-Autor David E. Gehlke aus Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania schreibt seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren über den Heavy Metal in seinen zahlreichen Ausprägungen. Im Jahr 2017 veröffentlichte Gehlke mit "Damn the Machine – The Story of Noise Records" sein erstes Buch. Die Chronik des spektakulären Aufstiegs und dramatischen Falls des deutschen Labels erwies sich auf Anhieb als Volltreffer. Daran konnte Gehlke schon zwei Jahre später mit seiner ersten Bandbiographie "No Celebration – The Official Story of Paradise Lost" (2019) unmittelbar anknüpfen. Drei Jahre später landete der Amerikaner mit "Turned Inside Out – The Official Story of Obituary" (Originaltitel) dann seinen bisher größten literarischen Erfolg.

Die im Jahr 1984 gegründeten Obituary sind eine Institution des Death Metal. John Tardys unfassbar kranke "Gesänge", der rhythmische Scharfsinn seines Bruders, dem Schlagzeuger Donald Tardy, und nicht zuletzt Trevor Peres' unerhört brutaler Gitarrensound haben selbst im Metal-Genre bis heute beständige Maßstäbe in Sachen Härte gesetzt.

Die offiziell autorisierte Biographie "Turned Inside Out" erzählt die Geschichte von Obituary ungefiltert mit der Unterstützung und tatkräftiger Mithilfe von Bandmitgliedern und vielen Zeitzeugen. Mit einem Vorwort von Max Cavalera (ex-Sepultura, Soulfly): Pflichtlektüre für jeden Todesmetaller!

New York-based goth act Crimson Brûlée has just released the new video for their track, “Why I Wear Black” in support of the charity cause Goths for Sanctuaries (see more info below on this charity).

Here’s what vocalist/guitarist, Lapis Ahumada, says about the video: “The video was originally shot around 2 years ago, and of course we were planning on releasing it as a proper follow up to our first video for “I came back to you” which was received with much love. However, health issues with some members of the band held up the full finish of the video as well as recordings, and shows. So sadly, the video got pushed to the backburners.”

Then around September – October 2023 Shellee Turner (Goths for Sanctuaries) reached out and the band started talking about doing a special remix for her charity venture. The band decided to donate a special remix of “Why I wear black” to the good cause.

The remix itself was done by Lovers/Deceivers. “I was so blown away by the quality of the work that it inspired me to finish editing the video to help Shelle’s cause“, says Lapis Ahumada. “The video for the remix turned out a lot better than I had hoped for – which was great because I wanted to be a positive force in the “Goths for Sanctuaries” campaign. I was so happy with it in fact, that it inspired me to finish the video for the original song. I then jumped back on the horse and finished the video for “Why I wear black”.”

About Goths For Sanctuaries

Goths For Sanctuaries is a fundraiser for animal sanctuaries and rescues around the world. Animal sanctuaries and rescues struggled enormously during the pandemic with some even having to close their doors.

Shellee Turner explains: “Goths For Sanctuaries was born during the lockdown of 2020, out of a desire to bring the alternative community together, support the amazing bands and DJs that were keeping us all sane and to raise funds for animal sanctuaries & rescues around the world.”

With two festivals, an earthquake relief event and a co-curated album so far, they also organised a two-part festival in October and November 2023, with an accompanying charity compilation.

Bay Area post-punk outfit Topographies will release their sophomore LP, “Interior Spring”, via Dark Entries on February 2, 2024. And the whole has a The Cure link as well, as you will see.

Formed in 2018 in San Francisco by Justin Oronos, Jeremie Ruest, and Gray Tolhurst, Topographies mix early coldwave with classic shoegaze. While the work of Tolhurst’s father – Laurence Tolhurst from The Cure – provides a clear influence, Topographies also has influences from such acts as Asylum Party or The Chameleons. The band debuted in 2018 with the 2-track single “Topographies”. A few more singles followed before the band released its debut album “Ideal Form” on December 4, 2020.

On “Interior Spring”, Topographies explore themes of guilt, inherited trauma, and recovery. The album holds 10 tracks of which you can already check the opening track “Night Sea”. You can check it below on Bandcamp.

Über die SIMPLE MINDS noch was zu sagen, wäre sicher wie Eulen nach Athen tragen, jeder kennt die große Stadion Rockband die sich 1978 in Glasgow gegründet hatte und u.a. beim Live Aid Konzert 1985 weltbekannt wurde und in den 1980er/90er mit tollen Alben wie „Sparkle In The Rain“ oder eben „New Gold Dream“ und „Once Upon A Time“ und einigen anderen Veröffentlichungen kommerziell sehr erfolgreich waren. Mein erster Live Gig der Schotten war 1986 in Hannover und seitdem und dem Kino Film „Breakfast Club“  mit dem SIMPLE MINDS Soundtrack Hit  „Don`t You Forget About me“  bin ich absoluter Fan geworden. Die Gründer JIM KERR, CHARLIE BURCHILL sind immer noch dabei und haben inzwischen neue und weitere kreative Musiker um sich versammelt,  gehen noch heute regelmäßig auf Tour und bringen ab und zu noch durchweg gute Platten heraus. Das wohl mit erfolgreichste Album in der Karriere der Kult Gruppe war die fünfte und eingängigste New Wave / Synth Pop lastige LP „New Gold Dream“ (81-82-83-84) und eben diese Platte feierte in 2022 ein stolzes Jubiläum von satten 40 Jahren und das mußte grundsätzlich mal gebührend gefeiert werden. Die „neue“ Veröffentlichung nun, die in der opulenten Kirche Paisley Abbey aus dem 12.  Jahrhundert aufgenommen wurde und wo somit sogar noch „himmlische“  Klangwelten der 9 Tracks des Albums zelebriert und erzeugt wurden, zeigt wieder einmal die einzigartige Klasse der erfolgreichen Schotten auf. Der Sound ist grandios und brillant und paßt sich dem großartigen Stadionrock der Gruppe komplett an, die cinematischen Breitwand Sounds von JIM KERR und Co. in der fantastischen Kulisse mit der göttlichen Aura werden die alten wie neueren Fans sicher wieder restlos begeistern. Solch Ohrwurmtracks wie „Promised You A Miracle” und “Someone, Somewhere In Summertime”, “Big Sleep” oder “Glittering Prize” erscheinen nun in den Live Versionen in einem etwas anderen Licht und wurden zudem chronologisch und in Originallänge eingespielt. Dann bin ich mal jetzt schon gespannt, ob auf der Tour 2024 nur das Album oder auch noch andere Klassiker der Gruppe gespielt werden.

I’m more into the new cuts “Volle Kraft Vorraus” and “Say Hello” which both are engaged pieces of dynamic, dancefloor-driven, Electro music with alluring vocals on top. Any Second -which is a band I really like, did a great job remixing “Last Attack”. There’s enough stuff for DJs to feature from this EP.

– – – : I regret the new songs didn’t get released on CD format but we have  to face the truth; this is the digital age! I’m a bit skeptical about “White Clouds” as the title song.

Die Power Metal-Band DRAGONFORCE hat eine weitere Version von “Doomsday Party” inklusive Video veröffentlicht:  “Doomsday Party ft. Elize Ryd, Amaranthe” – in der Albumversion teilte die Band bereits vor einigen Wochen “Doomsday Party” als Musikvideo bei YouTube. 

Als zweite Single erschien im Oktober “Power Of The Triforce” bei YouTube. Das Stück ist eine Hommage an die Videospiel-Reihe “The Legend Of Zelda”.

 Alle Song stammen vom neuen Album “Warp Speed Warriors”, das am 15. März 2024 über Napalm Records erscheint. Gitarrist Herman Li erklärt:

Wir freuen uns sehr, nach über 4 Jahren Wartezeit einen brandneuen DragonForce-Song zu veröffentlichen! Es war eine schwierige Entscheidung, welchen unserer neuen Tracks wir zuerst veröffentlichen sollten, aber wir haben uns für diesen entschieden, weil er eine andere Facette unserer Musik zeigt, aber trotzdem den unverwechselbaren DragonForce-Sound beibehält.

The Glasgow-based duo Hanging Freud (signed to the Belgian label Spleen+) (division of Alfa Matrix) has a new album out today: “Worship”. “Worship” is the 7th album for this Scottish new wave / minimal synthpop duo.

On this new studio album, Paula Borges and Jonathan Skinner offer 10 songs. The tracks were written in particular claustrophobic circumstances during the pandemic lockdown. “Because of what was going on, we were essentially stuck in temporary accommodation in Scotland, away from our studio and forced into a period unexperienced before. The songs that came out therefore come from a different place. Everything was done within a laptop and is proudly 100% digital. It was recorded and mixed while literally sitting on the side of a bed in a mouse infested apartment…” explains Paula Borges.

“Worship” is out as a limited vinyl edition available in 2 different colours: transparent violet and transparent turquoise (150 copies each worldwide) as well as a lush double-CD digipak with the “Anomalies” bonus EP just like in this Bandcamp download.

In neuer Zusammensetzung haben die Berliner old school Deather CARNAL TOMB 4 Jahre nach dem Vorgänger ihr 3. Album veröffentlicht. Was direkt, außer der neuen Position am Bass, auffällt ist die Länger der Scheibe!
Beim Vorgänger dauerte der kürzeste Song 5:04 Minuten, bei „Embalmed In Decay“ gibt es nur 1 Song der länger als eben diese Spielzeit ist.
Beim Vorgänger hatte man 7 Songs in 45 Minuten, hier 9 Songs in 38 Minuten.
Mir persönlich gefällt das sehr gut. Ich mochte den Vorgänger und das Debüt auch sehr gerne, aber zur aktuellen Scheibe finde ich persönlich mehr Zugang, wenn sich musikalisch auch nicht allzu viel geändert hat. Der Sound von „Embalmed In Decay“ geht mir auch deutlich besser ins Ohr, auch wenn der Vorgänger keinen schlechten Sound abbekommen hat.
Aufgenommen und gemixt wurde im gleichen Studio, aber das Mastering wurde dieses Mal in Schweden durchgeführt. Daran wird es sicherlich liegen, ;-)!
Der Mix ist dieses Mal wirklich großartig gelungen.
Man kann jedes Instrument, auch den Bass wirklich gut hören. Die Leadgitarre ist etwas rückwärtig gemischt, was mir gut gefällt. Sie geht nicht unter, drängt sich aber auch nicht so weit in den Vordergrund, dass das sägende Hintergrundgeschredder dahinter verschwindet.
Beide Gitarren haben einen wirklich tollen Sound. Beim Schlagzeug hört man immer wieder hier und da ein kleines Ding oder Dong. Mal ein unerwartetes Becken, mal zählen die Sticks mitten im Song wieder an, indem sie zusammengeschlagen werden. Das macht das sowieso schon wirklich gute und songdienliche Spiel von „Vomitchrist“ umso interessanter.
Die Melodien sind nicht ganz so verkopft wie auf dem Vorgänger, was mir den Zugang wahrscheinlich zusätzlich erleichtert und auch wenn man sich aus dem technikaffinen ein kleines bisschen zurückgezogen, hat man diesen Pfad aber nicht ansatzweise verlassen. Trotzdem sind die Songs von vorne bis hinten wirklich top ausgearbeitet. Immer mal wieder legt eine Gitarre alleine los um einen neuen Part einzuleiten oder die ganze Band stoppt für einen 1/8-Takt um dann druckvoll gemeinsam weiter zu bolzen.
Ach Jungs, auch wenn ihr eigentlich nicht 100%ig in mein Beuteschema passt, habt ihr mich mit eurem neuen Gurgelgrunzelrammtammschramm wieder gepackt.

In our ongoing journey through the vast melodic topography of blissed-out shoegaze and post-punk, we’ve acquired a growing admiration for Dreamwheel, a duo whose artistic chemistry predates the digital buzz of the hashtag era. Fronted by Julia Gaeta (Madrigal, ex-Albez Duz, ex-Restless Ghosts) and Evan Linger (of Skeletonwitch and Cultist), Dreamwheel has consistently captivated us with their evolving soundscapes. Their latest offering through Nefarious Industries is a testament to their musical evolution, seamlessly blending various sonic elements while staying true to their roots.

Dreamwheel turns the volume down from their metal and punk origins, but don’t be fooled – their music packs a punch as potent as a well-aged whiskey. Gaeta’s voice, as whimsical as a magician’s rabbit yet always in the spotlight, dances through Linger’s guitars with the urgency of a New York commuter. Their sound is as unique as a unicorn in a subway, pulling from the isolated echoes of shoegaze, the flirtatious melodies of new wave, and the raw catharsis of post-punk. Together, they craft a vibe where the ethereal meets the earthy, creating a musical rendezvous at the crossroads of nostalgia and novelty.

Their lighter touch has previously birthed two demo releases of the tracks Wild Days and Chain Of Fear, which conjured a sound that invokes the atmospheric oeuvre of luminaries such as DIIV, The Chameleons, and Siouxsie And The Banshees.

Their latest EP, Redeemer, is a labyrinth of themes ranging from the bittersweet nostalgia of yesteryears to the complex weave of religious upbringing. It’s a musical odyssey that’s as much about unearthing buried memories as it is about creating new ones. Gaeta’s vocals are the thread that ties the album together, while Linger’s multi-instrumental prowess on guitars, bass, piano, and synth creates a rich backdrop. They’re joined by James Stewart on drums and Tom Zwanzger, who adds his percussive flair and auditory garnishes.

Redeemer showcases Dreamwheel’s ability to refine their sound while maintaining an air of authenticity, resulting in an EP that feels both innovative and true to the duo’s artistic vision, eschewing the overwrought theatrics typical of modern goth rock. Instead, they embrace the genre’s finest elements into a carefully curated exhibit of darkness.

The album opens with the title track, Redeemer, a sonic collage that melds bright, jangly guitars with a fluttery, ethereal quality, typical of college rock’s experimental vibe. It’s a shoegaze chimera, weaving dreamy soundscapes reminiscent of Cocteau Twins, the melodic jangle of The Ocean Blue and The Smiths, and Aztec Camera’s introspective lyricism, creating a nostalgic yet novel auditory experience. Chain of Fear strikes a compelling balance between light and dark, blending a catchy, brooding riff with dreamy buoyancy. Gaeta’s voice infuses the song with a dynamic interplay of shadow and luminescence, creating an atmosphere that is both haunting and uplifting, bringing in some of the dynamism of Lush.

The next track, Promised Land, moves back into the college rock vibe with a grimy post-punk intro, setting the stage for a forlorn yet soaring guitar riff. This shimmers across a valley of gloom, perfectly complemented by Gaeta’s layered, haunting vocals, which add depth and emotion.  Concurrently, Bayou Rouge showcases masterful guitar work, evoking both 60s-70s pop and an imaginary dream pop ensemble formed by Billy Duffy and Johnny Marr, complemented by an ethereal touch from Julianne Regan of All About Eve. The EP ends with Wild Days, a song, a song which spirals like a summer daydream, or the memory of warmth in the dead of winter.

“What started as a back-and-forth across many miles during the pandemic lockdowns has evolved into this moment, and we’re excited to share it as we gear up for 2024 and playing our first live shows,” says Gaeta. “Redeemer is about being your own saviour when things get rough. It’s about casting aside the ideological temptations we’re fed, breaking through the chains. We wanted to put a new sound to this tale as old as time. But more importantly, we’re two friends making the music we want to make, and that’s what makes this EP special to us.”

Redeemer was tracked by Torben Utecht in Berlin, Germany and Tom Zwanzger at Stress Studios in Graz, Austria, Jaime Gomez Arellano handled the latter also handling mixing duties, and the mastering at Orgone Studios in Porto, Portugal. The EP’s art was handled by Nyle Rosenbaum, featuring model Anahita Saifollahi, photography by Emma Matsuda, and layout/design by Joe Spagnuolo.

Ernie Fleetenkieker ist Jahrgang 1980 und nur selten ohne Brille, Hut und Schnurrbart anzutreffen. Als "Fleet" wird im Niederdeutschen ein kleiner Wasserlauf in der Marsch bezeichnet und in Hafenstädten sind damit auch Kanäle gemeint. Ein "Kieker" ist wiederum jemand, der auf etwas sieht. In Hamburg werden Lumpensammler als "Fleetenkieker" bezeichnet. Auf Kanäle zu starren, passt natürlich hervorragend zu einem YouTuber, der mit Krachmucker TV seinen eigenen Kanal ins Leben gerufen hat.

Der Auslöser für diese ebenso spontane wie sehr erfolgreiche Aktion ist eine generelle Unlust des jungen Musikers, sich weiterhin mit den Tücken des Bandlebens und dem Business herumzuplagen. Auch ohne ehrgeizigen Plan klicken Woche für Woche immer mehr Menschen bei Krachmucker TV auf den Abo-Knopf. Das spricht sich rum und bald steht Ernie doch wieder mit einem Mikrofon auf der Bühne und zwar bei großen Festivals wie dem Wacken Open Air, Rock Hard Festival und dem Full Force.

Im Frühjahr 2020 folgt dann der Versuch, endlich "den großen Roman des 21. Jahrhunderts" zu schreiben. Dieser endet ungefähr auf Seite 20. Ein Spaziergang mit den Hunden bringt den zündenden Gedanken: Das ultimative Buch über den Heavy Metal soll es werden. Doch diese Idee ist ebenfalls nach zwanzig Seiten ausgeschöpft. Doch wen die harte Musik so richtig gepackt hat, den lässt das Thema nicht mehr ruhen. Anekdoten, Episoden, gute Zeiten, harte Zeiten, viele von den Dramen, Lachnummern, Höhepunkten und Tiefschlägen, die Ernie Fleetenkieker in seinen 30 Jahren als sogenannter Headbanger erlebt hat, formen sich schrittweise zu seinem Metal-Manifest, das so zerrissen, widersprüchlich und leidenschaftlich ist, wie der Autor selbst.

"Ernie Fleetenkiekers Metal-Manifest" ist ein ganz und gar persönlicher, sicherlich mitunter auch kontroverser Blick auf die Kultur und Szene des Heavy Metal. So manch ein Leser wird sich selbst in diesem Buch wiedererkennen. Einige werden heftig widersprechen. Andere erhalten Einblicke in eine für sie unbekannte Welt. Doch jedem, der in dem Metal-Manifest schmökert, wird Unterhaltung vom Feinsten geboten.

Die Black / Melodic Death Metal-Band FREEDOM OF FEAR hat einen neuen Cover-Song veröffentlicht: “Concerto” ist im Original von CACOPHONY und als Live-Mitschnitt bei YouTube verfügbar.

Aufgezeichnet wurde die Performance während des Adelaide Guitar Festivals am 15. Juli 2023, wo FREEDOM OF FEAR als erste Metal-Band überhaupt auftreten durften. Intendant Slava Grigoryan begründete die Einladung der Australier wie folgt:

“‘Freedom of Fear’ schlagen weltweit große Wellen in der Metal-Szene. Sie sind eine lokale Band, daher ist es sehr aufregend, sie als Teil des diesjährigen Programms zu haben”.

Mit der Cover-Version von “Concerto” zollen die beiden Gitarristen Matt Walters und Corey Davis mit Jason Becker und Marty Friedman darüber hinaus zwei ihrer größten Einflüsse Tribut. Gemischt und gemastert wurde der Mitschnitt von V. Santura (TRIPTYKON).

Zuletzt veröffentlichten FREEDOM OF FEAR das Album “Carpathia” (2022).

Dayal Patterson ist ein britischer Autor und Gründer des Verlags Cult Never Dies. Er hat mehrere Sachbücher über Heavy Metal geschrieben und zu einer Reihe von Metal-Magazinen wie Decibel, Terrorizer und Metal Hammer beigetragen. Sein Buch Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult gilt als Meilenstein in der Dokumentation der Musik des Genres.

Die Modern Death / Thrash Metal-Band ORBIT CULTURE hat eine neue EP mit dem Titel “The Forgotten” veröffentlicht. Zum Song “While We Serve” hat die Gruppe außerdem einen Visualizer-Clip bei YouTube hochgeladen.

Die Metalcore-Band POLARIS kommt im Frühjahr 2024 auf Headliner-Tour nach Europa. Auf dem Programm stehen dabei auch Konzerte in Wiesbaden, München, Hamburg und Berlin. In Österreich spielen die Australier ein Konzert in Wien, in der Schweiz macht man in Zürich halt.

Für das Vorprogramm kündigten die Australier nun neben SILENT PLANET auch THORNHILL sowie PALEDUSK an.

Zu hören wird auch Material des aktuellen Albums “Fatalism” (2023) sein.

Die Heavy / Power Metal-Band SAVAGE BLOOD hat nach dem Lyric-Video zu “Warriors Of The Fortress” nun einen Video-Clip vom Opener “Battle Cry” ihres neuen Albums “Wheel Of Time” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Downfall” (2020) das zweite Album der Deutschen aus Osnabrück und ist am 16. November 2023 via MDD Records erschienen. Produziert wurde das Album von Jörg Uken bei Soundlodge Recordings, während das Cover-Artwork aus der Feder von Giannis Nakos stammt.

SAVAGE BLOOD sind sänger Peter Diersmann (Ex-ENOLA GAY), die Gitarristen Jörg Steinhake (Ex-DORMITORY) und Timios Zouridakis, Drummer Marc Könnecke (Ex-ENOLA GAY) sowie Bassist Michael Wächter (Ex-DAWN OF DISEASE).
