Mit einem Video zu “Axes” stellen TYR den ersten Song ihres kommenden Albums “Battle Ballads” vor.

Der Nachfolger des 2019er Albums “Hel” erscheint am 12. April 2024 via Metal Blade Records.

Für “Battle Ballads” haben TYR mit dem Dänen Lars Winther zusammengearbeitet, er ergänzte die Songs um Orchestersamples. Den Mix übernahm Jacob Hansen.

“Es gibt einen Grund, warum man von ‘klassischer’ Musik spricht”, sagt TYR-Sänger und Gitarrist Heri Joensen. “Sie entsteht auf klassische Art. Und sie erzeugt diese epischen Klänge, die perfekt zu TÝR passen. Deshalb sind alle neuen Songs voll orchestriert.”

Den vielleicht irreführenden Albumtitel erklärt Heri Joensen so:

“Es gibt definitiv zwei Sorten Balladen. Viele denken an Hair Metal, wenn sie an Balladen denken. Wir betrachten Balladen aber im mittelalterlichen Sinne. Abgesehen von ein paar sanfteren Parts auf dem Album, ist das hier sehr geradliniger Heavy Metal mit einigen Folk- und klassischen Einflüssen. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, wie man es genau nennen könnte – Power Metal, Viking Metal, Folk Metal. Es passt immer noch sehr gut zu dem, was wir machen, nur fühlt es sich größer  an.”

Die Liste an Gastmusikern des neuen ENTERPRISE EARTH Albums ist lang: Ben Duerr (SHADOW OF INTENT), Matt Heafy (TRIVIUM), Darius Tehrani (SPITE), Wes Hauch (ALLUVIAL) – sie alle haben in irgendeiner Form an “Death: An Anthology” mitgewirkt.

Das Album wurde am 2. Februar 2024 via MNRK Heavy veröffentlicht.

Neu ist ein Videoclip zu “Blood And Teeth”.

Bereits vor Veröffentlichung des Albums stellten ENTERPRISE EARTH einige weitere Songs mit Clips vor:  “Casket Of Rust” bei YouTube sowie ein Video zu “The Reaper’s Servant”, an dem Track ist auch Darius Tehrani (SPITE) beteiligt. Als erste Single hat sich die Metalcore-Band den Song mit Ben Duerr ausgesucht und Anfang Oktober ein Video zu “King of Ruination” geteilt.

SAVAGE LANDS, das Projekt der beiden Musiker Sylvain Demercastel und Dirk Verbeuren (MEGADETH) hat einen neuen Song veröffentlicht: “The Last Howl” gibt es als Clip bei YouTube und ist der teikls bedrohten Spezies der Brüllaffen gewidmet. Unterstützt wird das Duo bei dem Song von Shouter John Tardy (OBITUARY) und Gitarrist Andreas Kisser (SEPULTURA). Außerdem wirkten Sänger Poun und Bassist Etienne Treton (beide BLACK BOMB A) an dem Song mit.

Den Erlös der Single verwendet das Projekt in vollem Umfang, um Aufforstungsvorhaben in Costa Rica zu finanzieren. Erworben hat man dort bereits eine Dienstbarkeit, welche die Rodung von rund 1,5ha Land verhindert. Spenden sind direkt über die offizielle Homepage des Projekts möglich.

TYGERS OF PAN TANG veröffentlichen einen Mitschnitt ihres Konzerts im Club The Patriot in Wales vom Sommer 2023:  “Live Blood” erscheint am  26. April 2024.

Bei dem Konzert standen neben Gitarrist Robb Weir, Sänger Jack Meille und Drummer Craig Ellis auch die neuen Bandmitglieder Francesco Marras (Gitarre) Huw Holding (Bass) auf der Bühne – sie stießen zum aktuellen Studioalbum “Bloodlines” zu der NWoBHM-Band.

Hurra, bei HULDER kann man tief in der „Peinliche Floskeln“-Kiste wühlen und findet nach kurzer Zeit das passende – natürlich Stilecht aus den Neunzigern importierte – Motto: No fun, no mosh, no core, no trends. Wobei, ein bisschen trendet der Sound der dreißig Jahre alten Black Metal-Platten derzeit ja schon wieder. HULDER ist daran nicht ganz unschuldig, ihr Debütalbum „Godslastering: Hymns Of A Forlorn Peasantry“ ließ als eines der Ersten den mittelalterlichen Symphonic Black Metal wieder aufleben. Nur dass das Spaß machte, darf man hier nicht sagen.

HULDER beherrscht mühelos die Klaviatur des Genres: „Verses In Oath“ liefert puren Black Metal der zweiten Welle.
Trotz der recht brutalen und ansonsten eher unspektakulären EP „The Eternal Fanfare“, sind die Erwartungen an HULDERs Zweitwerk „Verses In Oath“ einigermaßen hoch, denn ihr Songwriting beherrscht die in den USA lebende Belgiern mühelos. Wie erwartet gibt es in den vierzig Minuten, die „Verses In Oath“ umfasst, keine Innovationen. Finsterer Black Metal der zweiten Welle, voller kalter Riffs, hasserfüllter Vocals, klassischem Drumming und Keyboards – mehr braucht es nicht, um das Album zu füllen. HULDER beherrscht die Klaviatur des Genres mühelos, sodass die sieben Songs plus Intro und zwei Interludes im Prinzip ein einziges Aneinanderreihen von Querverweisen sind. EMPERORs „In The Nightside Eclipse“ im Titelsong? Check. SATYRICONs „Dark Medieval Times“ in „Cast Into The Well Of Rememberance“? Check. BATHORYs „Blood Fire Death“ in „Hearken The End“? Check. Artfremde Einflüsse (und Weltsicht): negativ.

Im Vergleich zum Debütalbum fehlt HULDER nur eins: das Überraschungsmoment. So ungestüm, wie sie mit „Godslastering: Hymns Of A Forlorn Peasantry“ die Herzen eroberte, gelingt es auf „Verses In Oath“ nicht mehr. Zwar sind die Elemente alle noch vorhanden und die oben genannten Songs oder auch „Vessel Of Suffering“ sind mitreißend und intensiv, aber das Besondere fehlt, ebenso die Seele. HULDER lässt ein Dauerfeuer auf die Rezipienten los, sodass „Verses In Oath“ recht anstrengend ist. Da der Sound auch zigfach mehr wummert, als die guten, alten Pytten-Produktionen (OK, die hatten mit anderen Sound-Themen zu kämpfen), ermüdet HULDERs zweites Full Length-Album gegen Ende. Es ist somit kein Wunder, dass besonders das Ambient-Interlude „An Offering“ in der Mitte des Albums das beseelteste Stück des Albums ist: Hier singt HULDER, statt sich auszukotzen. Mehrere solcher Momente hätten dem Album sicher nicht geschadet.

Kalt, rasend, brutal: HULDER verzichten auf halbironische Schrulligkeit und haben mit „Verses In Oath“ puren Hass vertont.
Jetzt doch noch ein Fun Fact: HULDER ist mit dem Neffen von Ober-MELVIN Buzz Osborne verheiratet. Und der, also Samuel Osborne, ist auch als Bassist auf „Verses In Oath“ zu hören. Davon abgesehen ist außer der Chefin nur noch Sessiondrummer CK (u.a. FUNEBRARUM) zu hören. In dieser Besetzung mordet und brandschatzt HULDER, ohne sich bremsen zu lassen. Doch auf die Underground-Sensation, die das Debütalbum darstellte, kann „Verses In Oath“ leider nicht gänzlich aufbauen. Wer gerne junge Bands hört, die sich vor alten Meistern (die damals Teenager waren) verneigen: Lasst euch nicht aufhalten und feiert HULDER ab. Die Magie der damaligen Zeit kann „Verses In Oath“ aber leider nicht konservieren. Aber hey, es gibt doch ein Happy End. In diesen vierzig Minuten regiert neben dem puren Hass nämlich auch die Liebe – zum ursprünglichen, trendfreien Black Metal.

The Post-Industrial scene in 2023 appears to be very much alive and not dying, as some listeners and music critics may say and write. New projects are appearing from famous and not known musicians in different genres and different sounds. Old, famous artists are releasing high-quality new material and their projects continue to perform at major and local festivals. Everything is going as usual. The only thing that catches eye is the absence both in the top and in the contenders for the top of new projects from new musicians, who have not been seen before in other more popular bands. This was lacking in 2023, but this trend has been noticeable for a long time, so everything is stable in the Post-Industrial music scene.

The Italian ambient duo ILUITEQ has collaborated with Bologna-based producer Lorenzo Montanà to create the Greek Mythology-inspired album “Katà Métron”. The album is set to be released by the Oakland based label n5MD on March 8th. It will be available on limited edition white vinyl and is now preordering at n5MD’s Bandcamp as well as their global presale partners Norman Records (UK), Deejay.de (EU), and Linus Records (JP).

ILUITEQ is an ambient music project founded by Sergio Calzoni and Andrea Bellucci. They have released several albums under various monikers and bands such as Red Sector A, Subterranean Source, Orghanon, and Colloquio. They use a mix of of sampling and synthesis techniques with parts of electric guitar, acoustic piano, and field recordings.

Lorenzo Montanà is an Italian soundtrack composer, sound engineer, and producer. His 2019 “The Threshold of Beauty” collaboration with Alio Die was Projekt’s most successful release of 2021,. Montanà started in the 90s, producing and arranging more than 40 albums across the electronic, ambient, IDM, jazz, classical, and rock genres. He released his first solo album (“Black Ivy”, 2009) and the 5-CD Labyrinth collaboration series with Pete Namlook on the label FAX +49-69/450464. His work as soundtrack composer landed in the trailer of “The Hunger Games 1 & 2”, “Blade Runner 2049”, “Coriolanus”, and more.

Die Heavy / Power Metal-Band WARKINGS hat ihren Song “The Rite” als Lyric-Video bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Entnommen ist der Track dem aktuellen Album “Morgana” (2022).

Im Dezember 2022 veröffentlichte die Gruppe außerdem ein neues Musikvideo: “Ragnar” stammt ursprünglich vom Album “Revolution” (2021) und soll auf der kommenden Tournee eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

ACCEPT haben erste Details zu ihrem neuen Album verraten: Das 17. Studioalbum der Band trägt den Titel “Humanoid”, veröffentlicht wird es am 26. April 2024 via Napalm Records.  Die erste Single wollen ACCPET am 28. Februar 2024 vorstellen.

Die Modern Metal / Metalcore-Band SPLIT IRIS hat mit “Purge” eine neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Es ist der erste Release der Finnen, seitdem sie einen Labeldeal bei Seek & Strike unterschrieben auf, wo auch im Laufe des Jahres 2024 ihr neues und erstes Album erscheinen soll.

“Das zugrundeliegende Thema ist die Hybris als Charakterzug der menschlichen Rasse und wie sie uns blind macht für unsere Grenzen und unseren Mangel an Kontrolle. Selbst im Angesicht der totalen Auslöschung besteht immer noch das Vertrauen darauf, dass alles mit einem Fingerschnippen in Ordnung gebracht werden kann, und dieses Vertrauen in unsere Allmacht hindert uns in Wirklichkeit daran, Maßnahmen zu ergreifen, um die kommende Katastrophe zu verhindern”, erklärt die Band.

New Jersey native HORNET (Indiana Christian, Oh! Vered) has mastered a unique fusion of dream pop with alternative music’s edgier undertones, characterized by a distinctive production approach influenced by Cocteau Twins, Sugarcubes, Frou Frou, and Nine Inch Nails. At the heart of HORNET’s artistic vision is the bass guitar: her basslines and haunting vocal harmonies form the backdrop, and the complex, trip-hop-influenced rhythms add depth and texture.

Her latest offering as HORNET, the video for Silkworm, transforms into a theatrical spectacle, blending an array of lights, cameras, and eclectic set pieces that seem to spring from the depths of her profound imagination. Staged within the raw confines of a peeling warehouse basement, this one-shot ‘live cinema’ act unfolds with the grace of a painter’s brush.

A modest budget of £800 was no obstacle for creativity: the small crew, each member equipped with a camera, navigated the space with an almost voyeuristic zeal. They meticulously document HORNET’s every move and interaction within the artful installations, culminating in a riveting, unbroken performance that spans 2 minutes and 49 seconds. The resulting footage, a kaleidoscope of perspectives, is stitched together in an eerie surveillance aesthetic, achieving a raw, emotion-driven edit that echoes the Dogme 95 movement.

The stark simplicity of the set and the seamless continuity of the take in which Hornet performs starkly contrast with any notion of artificiality. These artistic choices not only immerse the viewers in the immediacy of the action but also, through their exposed nature, suggest the portrayal of genuine experiences. The interpretation of the video’s authenticity is left to the audience. A subtle clue might be Hornet’s intentional engagement with the camera lens. Her focused gaze and the conviction in her delivery convey a compelling presence, hinting at a deeper connection and perhaps revealing the true focus of her message.

In the grand music festival of human existence, Fortune 500 companies are the spoilt headliners, with their massive amps cranked to eleven, belting out tunes that shake the economy’s stage and blow out the planet’s speakers. They strut around, chests p￭ with the swagger of economic growth and innovation, but behind the scenes, their backstage demands wreak a hefty dose of environmental havoc, economic inequality, pollution, and discontent in their wake. It’s a complex setlist, blending destructive bass lines with hopeful melodies, leaving fans to wonder if they’ll ever truly encore with sustainability hits or just smash the planet’s guitar at the end of the show.

Choncy, straight from the Rust Belt, takes a fierce swing at the colossus of carbon emissions with Dead Meat, a ferocious anthem pulsing with post-industrial intensity.

Dead Meat echoes the raw energy of punk legends like The Stooges, The Clash, Black Flag, Sham 69, and The Damned, serving as a jarring reminder of life’s stark realities. The track’s foundation is built on rhythms as gritty as a deserted factory, infused with a potent mix of emotion that challenges our perceptions of what’s truly essential in the wake of rising unemployment, profit margins, budget cuts, and man-made horrors.

Choncy masterfully navigates the realms of angular post-punk and unyielding hardcore, stretching their musical boundaries to the max. With its frenzied combination of pounding bass, razor-sharp drums, jagged guitars, and dissonant vocals, the band lays bare the harsh truths of existence, offering a raw and unfiltered portrayal of life in the working class.  Wrapped in distortion with the bleak backdrop of the Queen City, the DIY video by Liam Shaw demands attention to the tolls we bear in a mean, harsh world teetering on the brink. Choncy fleshes out a frenzied, multifaceted approach to punk with their sophomore album, 20X MULTIPLIER. The Cincinnati quartet delivers an intoxicating 9-song 12” tinged with personality and dumb luck following Community Chest, their 2023 debut on Feel It Records.

“20X MULTIPLIER displays a maniacal yet ingenious approach to punk that can only be compared to hitting a slot machine jackpot or maybe committing tax fraud and running for the Secretary of Defense,” quips the band.

„Ich weiß nicht, was ein Tesserakt ist.“ Mit ihrer schonungslosen Offenheit haben THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS die Lacher vor dem Merch-Stand auf ihrer Seite. Besser als das zugehörige T-Shirt mit besagtem Aufdruck bringt das Wesen der verrückten und ungezügelten Band wohl nur das kreative Backdrop zum Ausdruck. „Repost if you still listen to real music“, steht darauf geschrieben; darunter der Bandname im abgewandelten Design dutzender Rock- und Metal-Größen.

Als Opening Act sorgen die US-Amerikaner somit bereits vor Showbeginn für eine ganze Menge Gesprächsstoff; denn allein wegen der kreativen Mathcore-Ergüsse der Band sind die meisten Münchner:innen heute wohl kaum angereist. Vielmehr lockt der moderne Progressive Metal TESSERACTs ins Backstage Werk, wo man zudem mit den deutschen Durchstartern UNPROCESSED eine weitere ähnlich gelagerte Formation im Vorprogramm erwarten darf.

THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS

Dementsprechend dünn besetzt ist der Innenbereich des Werks um Viertel nach sieben, als der Dance-Hit „Everytime We Touch“ (CASCADA) den Innenbereich zur Tanzfläche ummodeln will. Ein kurioses Intro, das sich im weiteren Verlauf als eine Art roter Faden entpuppt: Immer wieder spielen THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS zwischen den Stücken Country- und Pop-Nummern ab, die im richtigen Moment von ihrem eigenen Material unterbrochen werden.

Das passt in seiner Verrücktheit perfekt zum Sextett, welches auch sonst die Zügel komplett aus der Hand gibt. Verqueren Mathcore bricht die Band durch zuckrige Singalongs auf, während Amber Christman auf der E-Violine dissonante Töne dazwischenwirft. Keine Kakophonie, aber durchaus fordernd, wie den Gesichtern im zunächst überrumpelt wirkenden Publikum abzulesen ist. Wie gut, dass THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS selbigem in „Star Baby“ mit der versöhnlichen zweiten Hälfte die Hand reichen – nur um sie im folgenden „Violent Astrology“ schelmisch wieder wegzuziehen.

THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS sind auch live so unberechenbar wie auf Platte

Während sich die Halle zusehends füllt, wagt Sänger Carson Pace den ersten Ausflug in Richtung Fotopit und setzt damit die zuvor ausgesprochene Warnung in die Tat um: „Better come to us, or we’ll come to you!“ Tatsächlich: Das Selbstbewusstsein der Band scheint abzufärben, wie bald der kleine, doch motivierte Pit zu „Blackberry DeLorean“ zeigt. Dass eigentlich noch mehr gehen könnte, steht dennoch außer Frage, zumal THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS in einer halben Stunde ihrerseits alles geben: Zwischen den Tänzchen Amber Christmans und den 2-Step-Einlagen Jackie Buckalews (Bass) blitzt immer wieder das sympathische Dauergrinsen Maddie Caffreys hervor.

Deren Kollegen gabelt kurz vor Schluss in „Fake Dinosaur Bones“ sogar Sänger Carson vom zuvor erklommenen Drumset auf, um mit dem Gitarristen auf den Schultern ein paar Kniebeugen zu trainieren. In Sachen Energie und Spielfreude entspricht das etwa dem wendungsreichen Songmaterial der Formation, die zwar nach zwei Wochen auf Tour offenbar immer noch nicht in Erfahrung bringen konnte, was es denn nun mit einem Tesserakt auf sich habe, doch dafür eine exakte Vorstellung hat, wie eine mitreißende Live-Performance auszusehen hat.

UNPROCESSED

Leichteres Spiel haben im Anschluss UNPROCESSED, deren hochmoderner Progressive Metal dem heutigen Headliner schon deutlich nähersteht. Ein gemeinsamer Nenner scheint folglich schnell gefunden, zumal das Quartett heute von einem transparenten und nahezu makelloses Soundmix profitieren kann. Tatsächlich scheint jedes noch so kleines Detail zu unseren Ohren durchzudringen, was die virtuosen Soli und komplexen Arrangements im Live-Gewand umso beeindruckender wirken lässt. Dank Backing Tracks und etwas Hall erschaffen UNPROCESSED so einen voluminösen Klang, der gleichermaßen filigran und mächtig sein kann.

Grundsätzlich ziehen die Musiker die Daumenschrauben aber erstmal an: Mittels Growls und Blastbeats drückt „Lore“ das Gaspedal durch, was im Werk nach kurzen Anlaufschwierigkeiten mit einem kleinen Circle Pit erwidert wird. Frontmann Manuel ist das jedoch offenbar noch zu wenig: „Schluss mit dem Kaffeekränzchen!“, fordert er vorm krachenden Breakdown und scheint die Münchner:innen damit für die restliche Show tatsächlich bei der Ehre zu packen.

Zwischen Gitarrenkunst und Emotionen halten UNPROCESSED nicht zurück

Zum federleichten Vibe von „Abandoned“ springt die Arena sogleich auf und ab, um dann im starken „Thrash“ die Sache mit dem Circle Pit ein ganzes Stück beeindruckender zu demonstrieren. Alles andere wäre auch der Leistung UNPROCESSEDs nicht würdig gewesen, immerhin halten die Wiesbadener ihrerseits keineswegs zurück. Vor allem Bassist David John Levy hebt regelmäßig mit beiden Beinen vom Boden ab, wenn er in „Deadrose“ nicht gerade das Soundboard zu bedienen hat.

Zwischen kreativem Drumming und beeindruckender Gitarrenkunst findet die Formation aber auch Zeit für Emotionen: Während des in sich gekehrten „Glass“ erfüllen zahlreiche Lichter den Raum, bis es zum Abschluss doch noch einmal laut wird in der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt: „Haven“ setzt mit Groove und begleitendem Pit einen nachhaltigen Schlusspunkt, der fast wie selbstverständlich von Jubel und lautstarken Forderungen nach einer Zugabe begeleitet wird.

TESSERACT

Wir wissen nicht, ob THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS-Sänger Carson die Show aus dem Backstage-Bereich verfolgt, doch wäre jetzt der perfekte Zeitpunkt, die vorhandene Wissenslücke zu schließen. Was ein Tesserakt sei, dürfte mit einem Blick auf das Backdrop unmittelbar klarer sein, welches ein Modell des vierdimensionalen Würfels ziert. So schlicht wie der Hintergrund gestaltet sich auch die Bühne selbst, wo lediglich einige verschiedenfarbig beleuchtete LED-Röhren den visuellen Rahmen bilden.

Stimmig ist das eigentlich spartanische Set-Design aufgrund der bunten Lightshow dennoch: Vorwiegend in Blau- und Violetttöne getaucht, schaffen TESSERACT den idealen Rahmen für ihren zeitgenössischen und teils sphärisch anmutenden Prog-Metal. Dabei passt am heutigen Abend auch die Balance aus Melodie und Härte: Auf den drückenden Opener „Natural Disaster“ folgt mit „Echoes“ die erste überzeugende Gesangsdemonstration Daniel Tompkins‘, der mit einem gesunden Maß an Theatralik und melodramatischen Gesten sowohl harsche als auch gefühlvolle Passagen meistert.

TESSERACT geben sich wortkarg, aber nicht distanziert

Dazu springt das Publikum losgelöst auf und ab, wenn denn nicht gerade der stattliche Pit den vollen Körpereinsatz der Anwesenden verlangt. Zwischendurch freut sich Tompkins über den kraftvollen Background-Chor zu seinen Füßen, lässt das Szepter ansonsten jedoch kaum aus der Hand. Trotz des weitgehenden Verzichts auf große Gesprächspausen wirken TESSERACT dabei keineswegs distanziert. Zwar verlassen die Musiker zugunsten stimmungsvoller Interludes zwischen einzelnen Stücken immer wieder die Bühne, suchen ansonsten aber sowohl Blickkontakt als auch die Interaktion. Insbesondere Bassist Amos Williams, der am liebsten barfuß über die Bretter wirbelt, genießt das eifrige Posieren und Haareschütteln im Scheinwerferlicht.

Verdenken können wir es ihm angesichts der Begeisterung im Backstage nicht: Während der andächtigen Momente in „King“ zücken die Münchner:innen auf Wunsch ohne Widerrede die Smartphone-Leuchten, bevor der elfminütige Titelsong des aktuellen Studioalbums „War Of Being“ (2023) den ersten großen Höhepunkt des Sets markiert. Beizeiten mächtig und erdrückend, dann progressiv bis zerbrechlich und schließlich mit einem großen Finale von erhabener Schönheit gesegnet zelebriert die Band das Stück dramaturgisch live wie ein eigenes Konzert im Kleinformat.

Für die Zugabe kehren TESSERACT zu ihren Anfängen zurück

Die Show in der Show markiert derweil gerade einmal die Halbzeitmarke eines Sets, das neben neuerem Material auch die beiden Platten „Polaris“ (2015) sowie „Altered State“ (2013) mit jeweils einem Song bedenkt. Seine stimmlichen Muskeln lässt Frontmann Daniel hingegen in der aktuellen Single „Legion“ spielen, wo der Sänger selbst die höchsten Töne kinderleicht aussehen lässt. Als sich TESSERACT bald darauf nach dem energetischen „Juno“ kurzzeitig zurückziehen, scheint die Laune in der Halle auf dem Zenit angekommen.

Ein Umstand, den sich die Band mit der doppelten Zugabe aus „Acceptance“ und „Deception“ der Debüt-EP „Concealing Fate“ (2010) fast schon schamlos zunutze macht: Die beiden Klassiker singt das Backstage Werk ein letztes Mal passioniert mit, während sich sogar der Circle Pit im Zentrum zu ein paar Ehrenrunden aufraffen kann. Wie man eine Show standesgemäß beendet wissen die Briten offenbar genauso gut wie ihre beiden Special Guests im Vorprogramm. Wir hoffen nur, dass Sänger Carson Pace (THE CALLOUS DAOBOYS) ein paar Momente dieses Auftritts selbst miterleben konnte. Denn in diesem Fall wüsste er spätestens jetzt und mit absoluter Gewissheit, dass ein Tesserakt ab sofort auch als Sinnbild mitreißender Live-Shows zu verstehen ist.

In the heart of Montreal, the year 2010 marked the inception of a minimal synth phenomenon known as Police Des Mœurs. This duo, composed of Francis Dugas and Manuelle Gauthier, is now introducing their fifth LP, COMMENCEMENT, a collection of ten tracks that intricately interlace themes of existential quandary, the inexorable march of time, and the perennial human quest for meaning and solace amidst life’s tumults.

COMMENCEMENT adeptly delves into life’s nuances, evoking a range of emotions from despair to a longing for deeper connections with nature’s tranquility. Through intricate musical compositions that include introductions, suspension bridges, and extended finales reminiscent of Kraftwerk and NEU!, the duo of Dugas and Gauthier skillfully combines catchy melodies, delivered through synths and vocals, with their distinctive rhythmic energy on multiple tracks.

Aptly introducing the LP, the track Commencement conveys a sense of powerlessness in the face of life’s challenges, suggesting that living itself can be a burden or affliction. Sablier reflects on the passage of time and the search for meaning in life. Serment evokes the passage of time, where days come and go while someone remains present.  A message of hope and the importance of holding onto a helping hand is conveyed in Cantique. Conversely, Soif describes a scene of turmoil and struggle, with tears, soot, and flames at a palace where even the masters are brought to their knees.The feeling of pain, loss, and the enduring pursuit of something beyond is expressed in Reprende, Hirondelle speaks of a yearning for a bygone era and a desire for reconnection with nature and peace.

Klypi’s latest track, Kiss Me, emerges as an exquisite snapshot filled with tender expressions, blossoming amidst the desolation of self-doubt. It serves as both a beacon of hope and a gentle reprimand to the reticent beloved, articulating through its poignant lyrics a readiness to surrender for a simple touch, a kiss, an opportunity.

Captured by LA-based videographer Vik Grossling, this video piece stirs a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of Kate Bush and Enya’s music videos, the kind once discovered on bootlegged cassettes. The transitions, crafted by Dennis Stein from Introvertmusic, give the impression of a message being transmitted through fragile, old technology. This effect is intensified by Klypi’s skillful montage editing, alongside the deliberate preservation of incidental audio-visual glitches that occurred during production, adding a unique layer of authenticity to the work.

Klypi explores the myriad facets of self-identity through an ever-changing tableau of silhouettes, poses, outfits, and layered images. Drawing inspiration from the unique blend of cult-smut-sci-fi seen in films like Liquid Sky and Brazil, along with the ethereal vibe of those late-night, as-seen-on-TV Pure Moods compilations, this dynamic visual expression celebrates the coexistence of Klypi’s multiple selves in all their glory. The video’s nuanced choreography resonates with the aching void of longing for an absent partner, reaching into the space they should occupy. With a determined expression, Klypi seeks a direct confrontation with the lover, demanding their full attention and engagement.

Klypi dazzles with their exclusive eyeshadow palette, “You See Me,” presenting themselves openly to the gaze of the audience and provoking the poignant inquiry – if this is truly love, then why the hesitation to express it?

Klypi is the musical persona of Los Angeles multi-disciplinary artist AC Carter. now signed to Lolipop Records, Klypi released their first self-produced EP in June 2023 and plans for a full LP in the fall of 2024.

Klypi self-describes as ‘an alien who’s trapped on Earth and recognizes that the only way to survive as a human is to become a successful businessman (as well as to learn how to tackle a wide range of human emotions and experiences).’ Isolation and unrequited love are just a couple of themes that run through Klypi’s work. Not one to rest on their laurels in one genre, AC has created garments for Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes, Jennifer Vanilla’s performance at MoMA PS1. Previously, AC has opened for artists such as Molly Nilsson, Girlpool, Shitkid, and Algiers, and has performed at festivals such as Big Ears, Secret Stages, and Athens Popfest.

Additionally, they curated and produced an event series titled Ad•verse Fest while living in Athens, GA, which highlighted electronic solo and duo performances across the music and art spectrum. Currently, they work as a model signed to Wildflowers and have been featured in campaigns for brands such as PUMA and runway shows for brands such as LVDF and Customland. AC thinks of themselves as a secret agent, navigating spaces and places where they don’t necessarily ‘belong’, yet who is driven to investigate the worlds of high art culture, DIY universes, and American Commercialism.

Klypi is performing a free show at Offbeat Bar at Dark Disco on February 8.
