Die Modern Melodic Death Metal / Metalcore-Band SUJIN hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Bleeding Chains” und dem Lyric-Video zu “Winter Breeze” mit dem Video zu “Wasted Progress” eine dritte Single ihres kommenden Albums “Save Our Souls” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Franzosen, die zuvor unter dem Namen WHISPER NIGHT agierten.

“Save Our Souls” wurde von HK Krauss (u.a. für LOUDBLAST tätig) im Vamacara Studio produziert und wird am 16. Februar 20024 via Scarlet Records erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork, das von Jon Ojibway (u.a. für PERSEFONE tätig) stammt, stellt eine präapokalyptische Landschaft dar, in der die letzte Bastion der Menschheit auf einem gigantischen Baum Zuflucht gefunden hat; das funkelnde Dreieck ist die letzte Energiequelle dieser kaputten Welt.

SUJIN sind Sänger Julien Mellier, die Gitarristen Stève Richard und Matt Lemonier, Bassist Quentin Bruyère sowie Drummer Liam Barbier.

Immerhin sieben Jahre haben sich MERRIMACK nach “Omegaphilia” Zeit gelassen, um an ihrem nunmehr sechsten Full Length-Album “Of Grace and Gravity” zu arbeiten. Dem Black Metal bleiben die Franzosen natürlich treu, und sich selber ebenfalls. Daran ändert auch der Wechsel zu SEASON OF MIST natürlich nichts und “Of Grace and Gravity” macht dort weiter, wo MERRIMACK mit “Omegaphilia” aufgehört hatten. Die Produktion hat ordentlich Druck und ist transparent genug, dass man auch den Bass anständig hört. 

Beständigkeit statt Innovation
MERRIMACK setzen auf “Of Grace and Gravity” – sieben Jahre Schaffenszeit hin oder her – auf Beständigkeit statt Innovation. Nur selten brechen die Franzosen aus ihren Midtempo-Passagen aus, sie setzen auf mahlenden Riffs statt übermäßig aggressive Raserei. Stilistisch beackern MERRIMACK so Klangpfade, auf denen auch MGLA, UADA oder WATAIN anzutreffen sind. “Sublunar Despondency” positioniert sich als Anspieltipp und die Schwarzmetaller leisten sich auf dem ganzen Album keine Blöße. Einen echten Höhepunkt lässt sich allerdings auch nicht verzeichnen – doch scheint dies sowieso nicht das Ziel von “Of Grace and Gravity” zu sein. Nein, dieses Album lädt ein zum Verweilen in MERRIMACKs schwarzmetallischer Welt, ohne Innovationsaufreger – aber auch ohne langweiligen Tiefflieger. Gute Scheibe!

1990 hatten ATROPHY ihre letzte Platte “Violent By Nature” veröffentlicht, jetzt hat die Thrash Metal-Band ein neues Album am Start: “Asylum” erscheint am 15. März 2024 via Massacre Records.

Mit einem Lyrics-Video zu “Seeds Of Sorrow” haben ATROPHY jetzt einen weiteren Vorab-Song aus “Asylum” geteilt.

Schon Anfang Februar präsentierte die Band ein Lyric Video zu ihrer ersten Single “Punishment For All”.

ATROPHY-Sänger Brian Zimmerman beschreibt, was ihn zu dem Track inspiriert hat:

“”Punishment For All” wurde durch den versuchten Aufstand in den USA am 6. Januar (2021) inspiriert, bei dem die Covid-19-Beschränkungen noch in Kraft waren. In meinem Wohnzimmer zu sitzen und zuzusehen, wie sich das abspielte, war kaum zu ertragen. Die Amerikaner gingen sich gegenseitig an die Gurgel, beschimpften Menschen als Verräter oder versuchten, die Demokratie zu untergraben, und glaubten nicht an das Wahlergebnis und folgten den unzähligen Verschwörungstheorien, die zu dieser Zeit die Runde machten. Ich dachte mir, was wäre, wenn sie erfolgreich wären? Was werden wir, als ein geteiltes Land, dann tun? Alles zerstören, was wir als Land gemeinsam aufgebaut haben? Was setzen wir dann an die Stelle? Werden wir einfach das tun, was die lautesten Leute uns sagen, was wir tun sollen? Die ganze Sache war einfach absolut verrückt.”

Zur aktuellen Besetzung von ATROPHY gehören Brian Zimmerman, der mit Unterbrechungen seit 1987 bei der Band ist, die anderen Bandmembers sind erst seit einigen Jahren dabei. “Asylum” wurde von Alex Parra im Second Sight Studio produziert, gemixt und gemastert.

At long last, Brooklyn’s own Dee Fortune & Thought Group have just released their highly anticipated debut LP Wish Upon a Star via Disko Obscura. The album is a immensely beautiful, deeply refreshing, multi-genre affair that taps into dream pop, nineties-era atmospheric pop, soul, and 4AD’s classic era, often on the same track. Previously, we featured lead single “The Gate,” and today we’re honored to premiere the third single and lead-off track from the LP, the intensely catchy “Deep Water.” Watch below:

The track begins with a short, yet ominous organ and piano melody, before kicking into high gear with a deep bass groove and infectious dance beat that moves and shakes with the ocean breeze. Dee’s passionate, yet soulful vocals soar above the din with impressive power. The hooks are endless and executed perfectly across the board, with shades of Sade, Enigma, Bedtime Stories-era Madonna, and Colourbox all melding together seamlessly. The video, directed by Thought Group and styled by Dru Barnes, taps into the band’s occult magick, with the band performing a ritual as well as the song on an rocky beach. The video has us yearning for summer through and through, but has just enough chill throughout to keep us  grounded.

Wish Upon A Star is out today via Bandcamp. The rubedo/red vinyl LP deluxe edition, shipping out on February 26th, is limited to 500 copies and features a full 11×17 lyric poster. Check below for the full album track list and album artwork.

Interview withHendrick Grothe (vocals) from Blac Kolor BLAC KOLOR, helmed by Hendrick Grothe from Leipzig, is a music project rooted in the raw energy of early 90s German Electronic Body Music. As a DJ, promoter, and graphic designer, Grothe has continuously pushed boundaries, shaping a distinct BK sound - banging rhythms for a dark, underground world. BLAC KOLOR’s journey began with the “Frost” techno night alongside Daniel Myer, DSX, and Square7. The ‘Range EP’ marked the project’s proper debut, evolving into releases like ‘Kold’ with rough breaks and uneasy vibes. With albums like ‘Wide Noise’ (2014) and ‘Awakening’ (2016), BLAC KOLOR collaborated with FRONT 242’s Jean-Luc De Meyer. The upcoming 5th album, ‘Weltenbrand’ (2023), features collaborations with PANTER NOISE, JENNIFER TOUCH, DONIS, and XTR HUMAN. We not only discuss the new album ‘Weltenbrand’ but also touch upon ancient times, the essence of the “scene”, and upcoming concerts.

Die Dark Folk / Blackgaze-Band SULDUSK hat mit “Anthesis” ein neues Album herausgebracht. Es ist nach “Lunar Falls” (2019) das zweite Album der australischen Band, die als Solo-Projekt von Sängerin und Gitarristin Emily Highfield gestartet war. Nun ist die Band um weitere fünf Musiker angewachsen: Sänger und Gitarrist Shane Mulholland (THE BONES OF GOD), Bassist Daniel Green (VOIDFALL), Gitarrist Josh Taylor, Violinistin Hayley Anderson (LIGEIA WEPT) und Drummer Frankie Demuru (MYRIAD DRONE, THE BONES OF GOD).

Reinhören ist ab sofort auch in den Track “Mythical Creatures” möglich, die Formation hat ein Musikvideo zum Song produziert.

Mit einem Video zu “Crystalline” veröffentlichten SULDUSK außerdem eine weitere Single.

“Anthesis” wurde gemeinsam mit Troy Mccosker aufgenommen und gemixt und von Thomas “Plec” Johansson gemastert. Erschienen ist das Album am 1. März 2024 via Napalm Records. Vorab gab es zum Titeltrack einen Video-Clip.

Øystein G. Brun sagt über “Moon”: ”

“Moon” stammt aus der Feder von ICS Vortex und ist ein weitere Schritt in unserem smusikalischen Abenteuer. Wie schon bei “Up North” sind wir begeistert, dass wir wieder mit Costin Chioreanu / Twilight 13 Media zusammenarbeiten konnten, um den Song visuell zu vervollständigen. Wir hoffen, dass ihr das Video genauso genießt wie wir! We truly love it!”

Mit einem Video zu “Nordic Anthem” haben BORKNAGAR im Januar die zweite Single des Albums im Netz geteilt.

Den Song und seine Bedeutung fasst die Band so zusammen:

“So viele Götter. So viele Überzeugungen. So viele Konflikte. In “Nordic Anthem” geht es um die Ablehnung jeder Art von Doktrin, ob religiös oder politisch. Es geht darum, seine Natur, sein Inneres, Kraft und Freiheit zu finden. Unsere Perspektive ist eine nordische – da kommen wir schließlich her. Unsere Haltung ist universell: Finde eigene Werte, das eigene Erbe und vertraue darauf, um dich gegen Götter und Autoritäten zu wehren, die versuchen, Doktrinen durchzusetzen, um dich zu kontrollieren oder zu korrumpieren. Dies ist unsere Hymne. Wir knien vor keinem Gott nieder!”

“Fall” besteht aus acht Stücken mit einer Gesamtspielzeit von rund 54 Minuten. Die erste Single “Summits” steht seit einiger Zeit als Visualizer-Clip bei YouTube bereit.

Gründungsmitglied Øystein G. Brun erklärt zur neuen Platte:

“Wir sind sehr stolz darauf, euch allen unser 12. Album mit dem Titel ‘Fall’ zu präsentieren, ein weiteres Kapitel unserer musikalischen Reise. In vielerlei Hinsicht stellt “Fall” eine Fortsetzung von ‘True North’ dar, aber wie immer stoßen wir weiter und weiter vor, um noch breitere und anspruchsvollere Horizonte zu erreichen. Musikalisch sind wir unserem Erbe treu geblieben, aber wir sind mit Sicherheit durch Feuer und Eis gegangen, um unseren bisher höchsten Gipfel zu erreichen. Obwohl ‘Fall’ ein breites Spektrum an musikalischen und lyrischen Ideen repräsentiert, basiert das grundlegende Thema des Albums auf der Faszination und Wertschätzung für die Randgebiete des Lebens. In the latest musical endeavor to capture the zeitgeist, Kovaceski Music announces the unveiling of an album that stands as a beacon of international collaboration, titled “FORCES.” This collection, featuring a series of singles, is the result of a symphony of efforts by globally renowned artists. Among these luminaries is Vlatko Georgiev, whose evocative tones enrich the instrumental single, Sorrow.

At the helm of this ambitious project is Klime Kovaceski, a maestro known for his dedication to fostering a global community of musical talent. Kovaceski’s vision has consistently sought to bring together the virtuosic skills of artists from diverse backgrounds, aiming to push the boundaries of musical innovation.

“FORCES” presents a compelling showcase of this collective artistry, underscoring the rich potential that lies in the collaboration of creative minds. It is an exhibition of the power of joint creation, offering listeners a panoramic view of the prowess and unique perspectives each artist contributes.

Sorrow gives listeners a prime example of the fruits of collaborative efforts. Vlatko Georgiev mastered the synth for the track with the help of Jasmin Misic, and the track was mixed and mastered by Kilien. With nods to Dead Can Dance, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Vangelis, and The Divine Comedy, the elegant single showcases powerful artistry and musicality, marrying strong lyrics and stirring orchestration.

“Vlatko is a well-respected composer and musician from Macedonia who currently lives and works in New Zealand,” said Kovaceski.

In a statement from regarding his participation in the single, “I was very excited to take part in the track Sorrow,” says Georgiev.  “This is one of those collaborations that come unexpectedly and unplanned but yet very pleasurable and gratifying. The cinematic feel of Sorrow was very inspiring to me and made my engagement very enjoyable.”

For nearly two decades, the stalwart presence of SPECTRES has loomed large over the post-punk landscape, a steadfast beacon for those pushing for the genre’s revival and reinvention. It was in 2005, amidst a resurgence of DIY punk’s raw energy and ethos, that the band’s frontman Brian Gustavson, a visionary with a voice, embarked on a mission to infuse the scene with a new vigor. Merging the defiant spirit of anarcho-punk with the icy, detached rhythms that defined the 1980s’ post-punk and deathrock, SPECTRES was born.

As time marched on, SPECTRES’ sonic palette broadened, embracing the kaleidoscopic hues of new wave, synth, and dream pop. Yet, they remained anchored to their anarcho-punk foundations with unyielding resolve. Their music, a chameleon-like tapestry, oscillates between the ethereal allure of pop-infused melodies and a piercing call to consciousness, urging listeners to confront the dystopian realities of our times. The track Chain Reaction from their forthcoming album Presence is a testament to this duality, harking back to the band’s punk origins while echoing their evolution.

Background/Info: Alice Gift is a Franco-German artist operating from Berlin (Germany). This must be the artist’s second opus which has been released as a collaboration between Icy Cold Records and Cymbeline Records -which released the debut album “Alles Ist Gift” (2021).

Content: We first get an intro song followed by melancholic, Dream-Pop, songs featuring the artist’s sensual, androgenic, vocals on top. The album remains wafting although accentuated at the last part by a few menacing electronic sequences and even a psychedelic touch running through the last song.

+ + + : This album features a few beautiful songs featuring a mysterious sphere and driven by the androgenic vocals of the artist. “Headwar” and “To Live And Die In L.A.” both are true attention grabbers but I also recommend listening to the somewhat harder “Pride (Prequel)”.

– – – : I regret the work is only featuring 7 songs so in the end it rather looks like a mini-album. The tracklist sounds pretty cool, featuring cool songs although missing a real apotheosis.

Conclusion: Alice Gift is an interesting artist for its darker, melancholic, interpretation of Dream-Pop.

Discussing the track’s meaning and origins, Moothart said, “I first started writing Little Egg shortly after the 2016 US presidential election. With the growing representation of ‘strong man’ authoritarian leadership around the globe, I felt a combination of disgust and amusement about how fragile and small these people really are. So this song is a commentary on the direction of the world, misplaced trust, manipulative authority figures, and the danger of giving thugs the keys to the castle. The opening line paints a scene out of an old school gangster film. You have the future running to the past to warn of the coming destruction of natural resources, and you have money gunning at its back to stop the message from being delivered. And the money is the one ashing its cigar out of the Cadillac on this con job stakeout. “

Announced at the beginning of December, Moothart’s upcoming LP Black Holes Don’t Choke comes out March 8th 2024 via In The Red Records. The production of Black Holes Don’t Choke marks yet another chapter in Charles Moothart’s artistic evolution. Driven by an ardent affection for classic hip-hop and a profound aspiration to enrich his creative lexicon, Moothart has dedicated recent years to delving into the intricate realms of sampling and sequencing. In tandem with this exploration, he has been meticulously refining his engineering and mixing skills through personal endeavors and fruitful collaborations with fellow artists in various studios. This amalgamation of elements has sculpted a fresh, transformative milieu, wherein Moothart’s songwriting finds the fertile ground to flourish anew.

Black Holes Don’t Choke embraces the elements and sounds of the present without glamorizing any tense – past, present, or future. It conveys a feeling of chaotic love and empowerment within a time of existential turmoil – aiming to lift up what positives exist in a world riddled with toxicity and complexity.

Post-Punk.com caught up with Mootheart to discuss the track’s origins, what it means to him now, and what’s coming up for him.

“Little Egg” sees you go acoustic, albeit briefly, which is a bit unique for your catalogue. What led to that decision?

It’s true that only single acoustic and single vocal is a pretty rare production choice with my records to date. I have gotten more confident as a singer, and I have enjoyed hearing myself sing out front of my music much more than in the past. As far as Little Egg, it served the rest of the song, and also the message of the lyrics. It sets up a personal moment of reflection. It’s like a deep breath before the onslaught.

You spoke a little bit about how this song was influenced by the 2016 presidential election. Have you felt like the track’s meaning has evolved in the time since it was originally conceived?

Yes the meaning has evolved in some ways. I mean the basic principle and the basic fears expressed are still just as relevant today as they were all those years ago. So, in that way, it continued to feel more pertinent to record and release. But yeah I mean it went from being a vengeful song that was about destroying callous authoritarian figures, then it was kind of like a playful tune for a moment, but ultimately I wanted to really hone in on the foreboding danger of the steps we are taking. So it landed in a space both visceral and anthemic. It really took on the characteristics of the album’s spirit I am referring to as apocalyptic pop. It’s catchy but it’s raw. These aren’t passive songs about a completely fictional time and place. These are real feelings about the world I see outside my window, or the things I see as immediately possible (both positive and negative). I feel like the second verse really encapsulates the spectrum of these feelings.

You’re playing a host of tour dates coming up this spring—what can folks expect from a CharlesMoothartlive performance?

I am really excited about the live band right now. I have some great musicians playing with me who also happen to be my really good friends. The set is mostly comprised of songs off Black Holes Don’t Choke at the moment, but we are working to incorporate some other material from my other albums. There are spacious moments, as well as chaotic and more ripping moments. In this time of my creative life, I am trying to lean less on sheer power and chaos, but that is an innate part of my spirit when it comes to playing the guitar. So the energy of the band represents the recorded music in a different way that creates a dynamic live experience. I am really looking forward to see how we evolve over the course of these shows.

Am 22.03.2024 erscheint mit “Nocturnal Will” das neue Album der schwedischen “Hiking Metalpunks” DÖDSRIT als CD, LP, MC und digital auf dem Label Wolves Of Hades.

Mit “Nocturnal Fire” gibt es bereits seit Anfang Januar einen ersten Track zu hören, nun hat die Band auch “Celesial Will” im Netz geteilt.

Das Album soll auf sechs Liedern triumphale Atmosphäre und archaische Stärke beweisen und von Hingabe und Leid erfüllt sein, wie die Band auf Bandcamp schreibt. Es ist das vierte Album des Black-Metal / Crust-Projekts und das zweite in voller Bandbesetzung.

Zum darauf enthaltenen neuen Track “noituLOVEr” (gesprochen: “LOVE Revolution”) hat die Gruppe ein Lyric-Video produziert. Auch zum Bonus-Track “The Curtain Falls” haben die Hamburger ein Video bei YouTube geteilt.

Jüngst trat Gothic Rock / Dark Metal-Band LORD OF THE LOST am 14. Mai 2023 beim diesjährigen Eurovision Song Contest mit der Startnummer 21 für Deutschland an. Übertragen wurde das Event auf ARD. Die Performance des Songs “Blood & Glitter” während des Finales kann man bei YouTube sehen. Am Ende belegten LORD OF THE LOST mit 18 Punkten den 26. Platz.

Kai Tak, a music collective from Los Angeles spearheaded by producer Chris King of Cold Showers, blends elements of shoegaze, trip hop, and electronica. The group’s name pays tribute to the now-defunct Hong Kong airport, renowned for its exhilarating flight path amidst the city’s towering skyscrapers. This project is a heartfelt ode to the cinematic portrayal of King’s birthplace in the works of directors like John Woo and Wong Kar-wai, as well as the city’s dynamic essence. The collective’s music, enriched by the diverse insights of its collaborators, serves as the perfect accompaniment for exploring the city’s shadowy backstreets.

The new single “Blush” is the result of an unexpected collaboration between Kai Tak and vocalist Claire Roddy (Dol Ikara). This partnership came about by chance when the two artists were paired up for a live performance.

“Chris came to me with this transportive instrumental while I was dealing with a bit of a writer’s block,” says Roddy. “These lyrics are an ode to that very moment of inspiration where suddenly feelings, words, and melodies spring right out from the drought, as instantly and vulnerably as a blush.”

“When Claire explained the meaning behind her lyrics, I almost couldn’t believe it,” adds King. “The music also came to me during a bout of writer’s block, which was broken by one of my old tried and true methods – watching a visually stunning movie on mute and composing music inspired by the imagery. In the case of ‘Blush,’ the inspiration was Fallen Angels, which has always made me feel like I’m permanently suspended in the most beautiful fever dream.”

In the song’s haunting lyrics, one encounters a tale of enigmatic and illicit entanglement. The protagonist, ensnared by a captivating enigma, finds themselves entranced by a spectral melody emblematic of their irresistible allure. Amidst tribulations, the song’s enduring beauty ensnares their senses, likening their connection to a spectral presence that relentlessly shadows their every step. The verses eloquently evoke sentiments of yearning and submission to this enigmatic bond.

Blush (feat. Dol Ikara) by Kai Tak

Born in Hong Kong and raised by American parents who were stationed at a camp for Vietnamese refugees in the city often referred to as the Pearl of the Orient, King’s journey led him to craft songs for Kai Tak during quarantine. This endeavor served as a means to connect with his unconventional heritage, and facilitate collaborations with numerous musical friends cultivated throughout his career as a producer and engineer. Operating without the constraints of deadlines allowed King to harness a plethora of techniques acquired over the years, including re-sampling, radical pitch manipulation, time-stretching, generous utilization of tape delay, recording live drums using MIDI drum triggers, and fashioning bespoke sample-based synthesizers from the sounds he had collected during his various trips to Hong Kong.

Kai Tak established a live ensemble in December of 2022, and within just over a year of performing together, the band had the privilege of opening for acclaimed acts like Blonde Redhead, Tamaryn, and Public Memory. Their trajectory includes plans for a tour in support of their inaugural LP, scheduled for release in June 2024 via à La Carte Records.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, Kai Tak will be playing a show on the 10th of February in LA at Genghis Cohen.

CHAOSBAY haben mit einem Video zu „Are You Afraid?“ eine neue Single veröffentlicht – das gleichnamige Album soll in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2024 erscheinen.

Hauptsongwriter und Texter Jan Listing beschreibt das neue Album so:

„Es gibt nach wie vor zu viele reale Themen und Probleme, die ich gern noch verarbeiten würde, bevor ich mir Geschichten ausdenke. In den neuen Songs ist das Thema Überforderung sehr präsent. Unsere Generation wünscht sich noch immer zurück in die Jugend, nostalgisch und romantisch. Wir sind aber schon lange erwachsen und wollen das nicht wahrhaben, müssen uns dem aber langsam stellen und viele Probleme lösen, die wir nicht verschuldet haben. Dieser Zwiespalt war der Ausgangspunkt der neuen Songs.“

Achtung, hier kommt gefährliches Halbwissen. Vielleicht ist es nicht einmal Halbwissen, aber es passt einfach so schön zu „Echoes Of Light“: Sternen entstehen mit Hilfe von Schwerkraft aus Gas und Staub. Laien wie ich erkennen hier die Kraft, die aus einzelnen Bausteinen etwas Großes entstehen lässt. Dass so ein wunderschöner Nebel auf CHAPEL OF DISEASEs viertem Album zu bewundern ist, lässt auch Rückschluss auf die Musik zu. „Echoes Of Light“ besteht aus so vielen Farben und Formen, dass es sich kaum kategorisieren lässt. Lupenreinen Death Metal boten die Kölner höchstens auf ihrem Debütalbum „Summoning Black Gods“. Das vor mehr als fünf Jahren erschienene, exzellente „And As We Have Seen The Storm, We Have Embraced The Eye“ ließ schon eine Menge Artfremdes zwischen Prog und Goth Rock in den immer verspielter werdenden Death Metal einfließen. Und „Echoes Of Light“? Das lässt sich nun gar nicht mehr in Schubladen stecken.

Proggy, spacig, Rock and rollig: CHAPEL OF DISEASE treiben auf „Echoes Of Light“ ihre Entwicklung auf die Spitze.
Einen stilistischen Neustart gibt es aber nicht, viel mehr treiben CHAPEL OF DISEASE das auf die Spitze, was auf dem letzten Album begann. „Echoes Of Light“ ist komplex und hochmelodisch, mal wuchtig und brachial, oft aber etwas verträumter, bleibt aber fast immer energiegeladen, selbst dann, wenn Laurent Teubl und seine damaligen Mitmusiker – nach den Aufnahmen stiegen Gitarrist Cedric und Drummer David aus – leisere Töne anschlagen. Insgesamt geht es auf „Echoes Of Light“ recht Rock and Rollig zu, ohne in Poser-Klischees zu verfallen, da der Gesamteindruck proggy und etwas spacig ist. Das erinnert ein wenig an die Herangehensweise, die BLUT AUS NORD mit „Hallucinogen“ wählten, der spacige Black Metal ein bisschen im Rock wilderte.

„Echoes Of Light“ ist ein unwahrscheinlich farbenprächtiges Album, das den Death Metal-Unterbau nutzt, um in der Folge in verschiedensten Genres zu wildern. Twin-Guitars, Blast Beats, 70er Psychedelia mit APHRODITE’S CHILD-DNA – und das alles allein in den ersten beiden Songs. CHAPEL OF DISEASE schaffen dabei das Kunststück, dass die Stücke nicht konfus klingen – auch hier ist also alles im Fluss. Songwriter Laurent Teubl lässt eine Menge Liebe und Details einfließen und er limitiert sich nicht selbst. Die Grenze zu Goth Rock und Post Punk ist fließend, und sie wird auch gerne überschritten.

Passt in keine Schublade: „Echoes Of Light“ zeigt CHAPEL OF DISEASE als geschmackssichere Formation.
Doch gerade bei „Shallow Nights“ geht CHAPEL OF DISEASE die Luft aus. Das achtminütige Progrock-Stück mit Goth-Atmosphäre ist ruhig und gefühlvoll, kommt nur mit Cleangesang aus – und lässt die Power vermissen, die den Rest des Albums ausmacht, und auch die Dynamik kommt nicht so recht zur Geltung. Schade – auch insofern, da an „And As We Have Seen The Storm, We Have Embraced The Eye“ nur ein Schwachpunkt war: Die gleichförmigen Vocals. Dass nun dieses Stück gesangliche Abwechslung bietet, ohne sonstwie mitzureißen, ist schon fast eine bittere Ironie. Glücklicherweise steht mit „Gold/Dust“ ein stilistisch ähnlicher Song auf „Echoes Of Light“, der hingegen alles richtig macht und Gefühl mit Power verbindet und uns obendrein ein brillantes IRON MAIDEN-Finale schenkt.

Mit „A Death Through No Loss“ und „Selenophile“ spielen CHAPEL OF DISEASE die farbenprächtigsten Songs, die man sich nur vorstellen kann. Mit ihrem Death Metal-Fundament wagt sich die Band in Regionen vor, die nur die wenigsten ihrer Genrekollegen bisher betreten hat. Eine schwindelerregende instrumentale Performance, gerade im Bereich der Gitarren, überbordende aber nicht überfordernde Arrangements, denen man sich einfach hingeben will und die zum Entdecken einladen. Und wenn CHAPEL OF DISEASE mit dem dynamischen „An Ode To The Conqueror“ ein episches Finale mit Post Rock-Tremolo-Gitarren und episch-gesampelten Chor das Album abschließen, sinken die Hörenden förmlich auf die Knie.

CHAPEL OF DISEASE verstehen Musik als abenteuerliche Entdeckungsreise: „Echoes Of Light“ hat eine clevere Dramaturgie und ein atemberaubendes Timing
Es passiert unglaublich viel auf „Echoes Of Light“. So viel, dass es sich gar nicht beschreiben lässt. Viel mehr ist es ein abenteuerliches Album mit einer cleveren Dramaturgie, und einem atemberaubenden Timing, das eigentlich perfekt wäre, würde man „Shallow Nights“ ausblenden. Sei es drum, CHAPEL OF DISEASE präsentieren sich – hier noch im alten Line-Up – als mutige Klangkünstler und zeigen aufs Eindrücklichste, dass Death Metal keine Einbahnstraße sein muss, sie leben musikalische Diversität und behalten dabei die meiste Zeit über den roten Faden. Dass mit dem luftigen und doch voluminösen Sound von Michael Zech das Album noch die perfekte Produktion verpasst bekommen hat, ist die Sahne auf der Torte. Da haben wir also nochmal Glück gehabt, dass CHAPEL OF DISEASE noch nicht am Ende ihrer Karriere angelangt sind – nicht auszudenken, wenn „Echoes Of Light“ ungehört in die Ewigkeit des Orionnebels eingegangen wäre.

LIV KRISTINE veröffentlicht die neue Single „3 a.m.“ feat. Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost & HOST). Der Song stammt aus der Wiederveröffentlichung von Livs Solo-Debüt von 1998 „Deus ex Machina“, das am 1. März 2024 erstmals als Vinyl-Version und als Doppel-CD mit unveröffentlichten Bonustracks bei Allegro Talent Music erscheinen wird.

Der 27. Oktober 1997 sollte ein ganz besonderes Datum in der Karriere von LIV KRISTINE werden. An diesem Tag lernte sie Nick Holmes (Host, Paradise Lost) kennen. Die Chemie zwischen den beiden Ausnahmekünstlern stimmte von Anfang an, und so wurde die gemeinsam komponierte, wunderschöne Gothic-Ballade „3 a. m.“ der erste Song für das 1998 erschienene Soloalbum „Deus ex Machina“. Trotz ihres jeweiligen Metal-Backgrounds entstand durch die Verschmelzung ihrer Stimmen etwas ganz Besonderes.

Gleich beim ersten Track “Veil of Tyrants” wird klar: Hier erwartet uns kein Schlager-Metal. Hier herrscht wahre Finsternis:. Das Stück beginnt mit düsterem Rauschen, geht über zu einem in der Ferne zu erahnenden Stöhnen. Die Gitarre spielt ein von Hall intensiviertes Solo, das Schlagzeug beginnt leise, als plötzlich alles in einem Echo verpufft. Stille. Elektrisierende Spannung. Und dann, wie ein Angriff aus der Unterwelt, ergießt sich eine bombastische Flutwelle aus Energie und purer Gewalt ins Gehör. Ich fühle mich sofort an Bands wie REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER erinnert. Echt übermächtig!

Der zweite Track “The Tide” geht mit hart abgerissenen, tief gestimmten Gitarren und gutturalem Growls sofort durch Mark und Bein. Man hört gleich, dass PRAISE THE PLAGUE zurecht unter Blackened Sludge/Doom Metal geführt werden. Ich würde noch Post Metal ergänzen. Aber Klassifizierungen sind eh immer schwierig (und nicht zuletzt unnötig).

Eine Besonderheit bildet der vierte Titel “A Serpent’s Tongue”: Eine von einer dämonischen Stimme gesprochene Textpassage lässt Finsternis erwarten. Man wird natürlich nicht enttäuscht. Zum englischen Text, von Hoffnung, Verrat, Hoffnungslosigkeit und dem anschließendem Verderben, durch anschauliche Metaphern erzählt, gesellen sich auch deutsche Textpassagen.

Als dann die richtig tief gestimmte Gitarre ihr Klagelied anspielt, geht das eigentliche, von einer beinahe klagenden Melodie getragene Intro des Songs nahtlos in Geschwindigkeit über. Die vorher aufgebaute hoffnungslose Atmosphäre bleibt bestehen, wird beinahe bedrückend.

Mal schneller, mal langsamer zeigt jeder Titel für sich, dass Robert Carmosin (Vocals), Marcel Martin und Christoph Macht (Gitarren), Benjamin Linz (Bass) und Sascha Bühl (Drums) ihr Handwerk wirklich beherrschen und die beschriebene Thematik perfekt und klang gewaltig umgesetzt haben. Wenn auch nur gut 38 Minuten lang, ist das Album rund, stimmungsvoll und voller Emotionen!

Ich bin bereits jetzt der Meinung, hier eines meiner persönlichen Best-of-Alben des Jahres 2024 zu hören.

TOMY LAISTO (HATEFORM, ARC SPECTRA, Ex-MORS PRINCIPIUM EST) hat mit “Drywall” eine weitere neue Single veröffentlicht. Die Keyboards wurden dabei von Iiro Salmi – dem ehemaligen Musiklehrer von Laisto aus dessen Grundschulzeit – eingespielt.

Vor einigen Wochen ist mit “This Summer” eine erste Single erschienen.

“Der Song entstand an einem Augustabend auf meiner Terrasse, als ich den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten in der Luft spürte, vom Sommer zum Herbst. Man kann es irgendwie spüren. Es geht um das Ende einer angespannten Beziehung, um das Wissen, dass das, was kommen wird, unausweichlich ist, so wie man weiß, dass die Jahreszeit zu Ende geht.”

“This Summer” wird Teil eines neuen und ersten Albums des Solo-Künstlers sein. Als Gäste konnte der Finne DEREK SHERINIAN (Ex-DREAM THEATER) and Christian Määttä (ARC SPECTRA) begrüßen.

Die Psychedelic / Stoner Rock-Band IOTA hat mit “Pentasomnia” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Tales” (2008) das zweite Album des US-amerikanischen Trios aus Salt Lake City, welches aus Gitarrist, Synthesizer und Sänger Joey Toscano (DWELLERS), Bassist Oz “Inglorious” Yosri (Ex-BIRD EATER) sowie Drummer Andy Patterson (THE OTOLITH, OXCROSS, Ex-SUBROSA) besteht.

“”Pentasomnia” ist eine Verschmelzung”, sagt Toscano, “grob übersetzt bedeutet das ‘fünf Träume’. Jeder Song wird aus der Perspektive eines anderen mentalen Zustands erzählt. Er stellt die Ideen der traditionellen Normen über Identität und unseren Platz in der Welt in Frage und hinterfragt die Idee des Selbst. Ein kathartisches Bekenntnis zu unserem winzig kleinen Platz in einer riesigen musikalischen Landschaft.”

“Pentasomnia” wird am 22. März 2024 via Small Stone Recordings erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track “The Returner” zu hören.

Die Blackened Melodic Death Metal-Band VOLCANDRA hat mit “The Way of Ancients” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Into the Azure” (2020) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Kentucky und erzählt eine Geschichte, die insbesondere von der klassischen, frühen Diablo-Videospielserie sowie vom Eskapismus der Schwert- und Zaubererfilme der achtziger Jahre wie Conan, Clash of the Titans und Excalibur beeinflusst ist.

“The Way of Ancients” wurde von Mike Low produziert und wird am 1. März 2024 via Prosthetic Records erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Varises Otak. Mit “Fouled Sanctity” gibt es vorab einen Video-Clip.

“Der Song handelt von einem tapferen Krieger, der sich in die Tiefen einer entweihten Kathedrale wagt, die von Dämonen befallen ist, gegen die er kämpfen muss. Am Ende seiner Suche ist er von der Seele der Bestie besessen, die die Ursache für all das Chaos ist”, erklärt die Band.

VOLCANDRA sind Sänger Dave Palenske (CHAOS SANCTUARY), die Gitarristen River Jordan (BLIND SCRYER) und Jamie DeMar, Bassist Andrew Casciato sowie Drummer Mike Hargrave.

Mit “The London Conspiracy Chapter I 1898” wird in wenigen Wochen das neue Album der Progressive Metal-Band METRO SOCIETY erscheinen. Es ist nach “A Journey in Paris” (2007) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Colorado.

Die Geschichte des Albums spielt im London des Jahres 1898. Es ist zehn Jahre her, dass die schrecklichen Morde von Jack the Ripper die Stadt in Angst und Schrecken versetzten. Die Dunkelheit dieser grausamen Ereignisse wirft noch immer einen düsteren Schatten auf die Stadt und ihre Bürger. Ein aufstrebender Detective wird in einen Mordfall verwickelt, bei dem es um den verdächtigen Tod seines ehemaligen Mentors, des inzwischen pensionierten Metropolitan Police Commissioner, geht. Der Detective hat sich geschworen, diesen Fall zu lösen, und beginnt, weit mehr zu entdecken, als er sich jemals vorgestellt hat. Hinweise und Verdachtsmomente führen zu einer verworrenen Geschichte von Verrat, Geheimgesellschaften und Mord, die scheinbar mit dem Ripper zusammenhängt.

„Mir war schnell klar, dass es das noch nicht gewesen sein kann. Ich hatte nie den Plan, nie wieder zu spielen”, sagte SLAYER-Gitarrist KERRY KING. Nachdem SLAYER 2019 zu Grabe getragen wurden, veröffentlicht KERRY KING am 17. Mai 2024 sein Soloalbum “From Hell I Rise”, das Album erscheint via Reigning Phoenix Music.

Mit “Idle Hands” bei YouTube stellt KERRY KING nun den ersten Song der Platte vor und verspricht:

„Wenn du jemals SLAYER in irgendeiner Phase unseres Schaffens gemocht hast, gibt es etwas auf dieser Platte, das dir gefallen wird, sei es klassischer Punk, schneller Punk, Thrash oder einfach nur Heavy Metal!“

Zur Besetzung der KERRY KING-Band gehören Schlagzeuger Paul Bostaph (SLAYER), Bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH), Gitarrist Phil Demmel (ex-MACHINE HEAD) und Sänger Mark Osegueda (DEATH ANGEL).

Josh Wilbur hat “From Hell I Rise” produziert, eingespielt wurde das Album in zwei Wochen in den Henson Studios  in Los Angeles. Über die Zusammenarbeit mit KERRY KING sagt er:

„Er ist Kerry King von SLAYER, icxh habe diese Band millionenmal gehört. Er ist einfach präsent. Kerry hat kein übersteigertes Ego, aber er besitzt ein gesundes Selbstvertrauen, was eine gute Sache ist. So stellt man sich einen Rockstar vor und wünschjt sich ihn für seine Band. Er wirkt nie wie ein Idiot oder böser Kerl. Aber er weiß genau, was er will, und redet nicht um den heißen Brei herum. Er sagt nicht einfach: ‚Das geht so nicht’, sondern weiß genau, wie er die Sache haben will. Sehr direkt, aber immer mit dem erforderlichen Maß an Respekt und Können verbunden. Es hat mir wirklich Spaß gemacht, mit Kerry zu arbeiten.“

Laut King befasst sich sein neues Material mit:

„diversen religiösen und kriegsnahen Themen. Musikalisch zwischen schweren Riffs, punkigen Einlagen sowie doomigen und düsteren Elementen. Dies alles versetzt mit einer höllischen Geschwindigkeit. Selbst mit einem komplett fertigen Album in den Händen habe ich noch enorm viele Songs in der Hinterhand, die es fertigzustellen gilt. Hier weiß ich, was ich zu tun habe… Erstens Musik, zweitens Metal. Das ist seit 40 Jahren ein Teil meines Lebens und ich bin noch lange nicht fertig.“

Die Brutal Death Metal / Goregrind-Band GORE MACHINE hat einen Labeldeal bei Horror Pain Gore Death Productions unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird die Band, welche von Druesome als Solo-Projekt betrieben wird, ihr neues und erstes Album “Macerated & Liquified” veröffentlichen.
