In those fluorescent-blazed warrens of glass and steel that pierce our urban landscapes, countless zombies tread the worn carpets of the corporate realm, shackled by the invisible chains of the gossamer dreams of late capitalism. Here, in this meticulously orchestrated maze, the hours stretch interminably, punctuated only by the relentless hum of machines and the muted despair of its denizens. Each day unfolds as a Sisyphean ordeal, where ambition is both the carrot and the stick, driving the cogs in the workforce towards ever-distant horizons of success. Amidst the sterile fluorescence, the human spirit flickers, caught in the ceaseless pursuit of a fulfillment perpetually deferred.

All this hell for a sliver of hard-earned heaven? Vanderwolf thinks – nay, knows so. The artist, who wound his way from NYC to LA, unveils a futuristic folk treatise on trials of work: The 6.09, the latest single from his upcoming album The Great Bewilderment, set for release on March 13th.

In The 6.09, Vanderwolf’s vocals take flight, weaving through acoustic verses to deliver a poignant critique of contemporary society, all within the framework of a psychedelic-folk-rock ballad. Vanderwolf finds keen allies in Billy Bragg, Heaven 17, Anne Clark and Midnight Oil in sentiment, but their earnest neofolk sound hearkens back all the way to Phil Ochs and Led Zeppelin.

Accompanying the song is a music video crafted by Alden Volney, featuring a sequence of animations that embark on a dark and twisted journey. It is wryly dark, with imagery of a head trapped in a rotating box, MC Escher-esque loops, and the false cheeriness of social media trying to sell your own dopamine back to you. Strangely satisfying, indeed.

“The Great Bewilderment is a complexly layered reflection of my recent years courting chaos and rootlessness, arriving, leaving, settling and unsettling,” says Vanderwolf. “It’s a collection of interweaving hellos and goodbyes. It’s about leaving certain things behind and, conversely, claiming those things that can be known in the here and now. It’s about coming to terms with a sense of place — after a long period of exile and some self-imposed restlessness. Finally, it is about what can be known. And what can be appreciated as truly valuable in this world despite the bewildering context of war and mass extinction.”

Vanderwolf’s acclaimed 2021 solo debut, 12 Little Killers, saw the native New Yorker roam around garage rock, glam, Americana, psych and blues with the vocals willfully varied. Here, his scope is generally more epic. Vanderwolf remains an explorer, but The Great Bewilderment finds him more focused, despite his wide-ranging vision. While the former album was written and recorded during Vanderwolf’s final years in London following the break-up of his former band Last Man Standing, The Great Bewilderment’s eight songs were mostly written or recorded during the pandemic.

“12 Little Killers grew out of restlessness, personal mistakes and chaos, much of which continued into the pandemic: I lost a friend and mentor in (record producer) Hal Willner, my father died and I never lived anywhere for more than a few months.’’

Parallel to his work as a musician, Vanderwolf has enjoyed a hugely successful career as a music programmer and concert producer: for 9 years he produced the Meltdown Festival.

Facing another New York winter where infection rates were rising, the promise of LA was irresistible. ‘’When I came out to LA and began rehearsing and recording, much of that chaos subsided. LA allows you to enjoy the illusion of paradise. And in the height of the pandemic — that illusion was nurturing.’’

With a fresh batch of songs ready to be rehearsed, Vanderwolf worked with drummer Angie Scarpa, guitarist Dusty Meadows, and bassist H Chris Roy.

Post-Punk.com had a few questions to ask of Vanderwolf, who talked about his nomadic past, the music video, and hopes for the album.

1. You’ve spent much of your life in London and New York, however, this record was made primarily in Los Angeles. Did recording in a new location change your approach, or influence the record’s sound in any way?
 
Yes – it undoubtedly influenced the record in ways that are often quite mysterious — and that’s part of the inexplicable and elusive magic of  LA or California — and definitely, of Laurel Canyon.

But there were also some impactful elements that can be explained. I moved to LA during the pandemic — after NYC became an increasingly unattractive scenario. So in some ways I was seeking  refuge. These were tender times for everyone. Just gathering with friends required caution. Gathering friends to make music was practically a political act. It both engaged in and defied some pandemic protocol. Our earliest rehearsals had to be outside. I was living in this weird empty house at the very top of Laurel Canyon in a development called Mount Olympus. It has its own microclimate. The owner of the house was one of the Shah’s of the Sunset Strip Tv show and he’d stash all his equipment and outdoor furniture at this location. Nothing worked. It was a mess. But it was on top of a mountain with incredibly expansive views of LA out to the ocean. There was a feeling of space. A feeling of vast possibilities. And there was time. We didnt rush this music. We allowed the arrangement to breathe. We tried out many ideas, made modifications, tried again, wrote new bits, jammed…and this approach carried  into the studio sessions which were in Silver Lake about a year later. Most of what you hear was recorded live.

2. The music video for “The 6.09” sees a collection of repetitive, “satisfying”animations eventually turn dark and twisted. Where did the idea for the video come from, and what was the process of creating it like?

This was my 4th video with Alden Volney and he’s really a kind of genius. I knew I didnt want an illustration of the songs’ lyrics. They tell certain story that I think is quite complete and self-contained. The question was, what can we bring to this story or what kind of different story can we overlay on it. I really had my doubts when he told me his idea. But he really hates those ”relaxation video” — and I could see why they were disturbing to him. And if we could show the complacency they inspire– as a kind of  drug– I thought we might have something. So I really let him get on with the work. The only thing I asked him to do was add more emphasis to the dark and twisted section of the song….it needed to be darker and more twisted.
 
3. What do you hope your audience takes away from your upcoming record, The Great Bewilderment?

There’s a long list of possible  take-aways. First of all its 45-minutes of music so what I primarily hope is that people will listen to it as an album. I know that’s a rare thing these days. People will watch their favorite  Netflix series for 115 hours of their lives But these days music doesn’t seem to garner an audience’s attention for long. The album doesnt sit in any genre-specific territory so it’s best heard as a composite…and as a journey..or an epic film. As far as themes, there’s a lot to take away…themes of complacency, confusion, bewilderment all contributing to a kind of  paralysis. The song, Gaza, arguably the centerpiece of the album, was written long before the middle-east conflict erupted into this disgusting war. It depicts an inability to connect with political struggles and failures of public policy that lead to the kind of  wars we see now. Back when I wrote it, most people couldn’t find  Gaza on a map. The many years of neglect and our inability to recognise the plight of Gaza was so clearly going to be complicit in the explosion of this current conflict. And this is true for countless other places in the world also suffering from this same kind of  neglect. The song could have easily been titled, Haiti, or the Democratic Republic of  Congo. So maybe there is an opportunity for people to address their own sense of  bewilderment about the world. Other than that,  there’s a lot of  love and loss on this record. Who can’t relate to that?

Back in the ’70s, crash test dummy flicks were the unsung heroes of the road, turning vehicular mayhem into a teachable moment with a side of uncanny valley. These cinematic PSA gems, brought to you by the fine folks in government and safety circles, were possibly the original influencers, making seat belts and airbags the must-have accessories of the disco era.

Fast forward to the mid-’90s, and leave it to David Cronenberg to flip the script with Crash, a film that makes you wonder whether your seat belt might need a safe word. Diving headfirst into the twisted metal love affair between humans and their four-wheeled death machines, Cronenberg’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s novel is as much a psychological thriller as it is an R-rated driver’s ed video.

Now, riding the tailwinds of these cultural crash courses, Nightcrawler’s latest EBM banger, Crash Test Dummy, slams into the scene. It’s a track that feels like a head-on collision between the eerie nostalgia of ’70s safety films and Cronenberg’s kinked-out car crash fantasies.

Using sound samples from one of the 70s instructional videos, Crash Test Dummy’s powerful electronic rhythms mimic the firing pistons of a fiercely revved engine..we’ll let you decide if it’s a metaphor or not. We hear the influences of Asymetrc80’s synth waves, Alpha Sect’s dark beats, and DJ Hell’s techno mischief.  Public Service Broadcasting’s docu-samples, Orbital’s electronic odyssey vibes, and The Avalanches’ genre-smashing samples also come to mind with this surefire banger that’s ready to buckle up and take you for a ride you’ll never forget.

The music video, which utilizes found footage from these old films,  was created by the artist himself under his pseudonym as art director and designer George Gold Design.

Based in Spain, Nightcrawler is a renowned music producer whose career took off in 2011, drawing inspiration from the eerie and fantastical realms of horror and sci-fi movie soundtracks. Nightcrawler’s live performances are a synthesis of music and visuals, creating immersive experiences that have captivated audiences at festivals like Low Fest, SOS 4.8, Primavera Sound, Eufònic, Film Festival Fantastic in Sitges, and the In-edit Festival. His talent has also been showcased in major cities including Berlin, London, Cologne, Lyon, Vienna, Budapest, Madrid, and Barcelona, affirming his status as a dynamic force in the electronic music scene.

Lovelorn Dolls, the Belgian goth metal pop band, is making a comeback with their fourth album, “Deadtime Stories”, after a five-year hiatus. During this period, the band’s frontwoman, Kristell, expanded her artistic horizons under the alias Kristell In Wonderland as a photographer and visual artist, an experience that has heavily influenced the band’s latest work.

The new album comes after the teaser EP “Beautiful Chaos” which was released earlier this year.

The album will be out on Alfa Matrix / Spleen+ on CD and as download (and streaming). The new album was produced by Maxx Maryan, known for his work with Helalyn Flowers and ImJudas. “Deadtime Stories” also features a guest appearance by Dero Goi, the former singer of OOMPH!.

“House of Cards” is the debut solo single from singer and songwriter Isaac Howlett, best known as the voice and driving force behind the British synth-pop band Empathy Test. The group have issued three albums, the most recent of which is “Monsters” (2020).

The single, out via the Terrifying Tiger label, confronts the brutal reality but eventual relief of escaping a toxic relationship. The single is the first taste of Howlett’s solo material.

Howlett will be performing “House of Cards” as part of the Empathy Test live set on their forthcoming 10th Anniversary European Tour in March and April 2024.

ACCEPT haben Details zu ihrem neuen Album verraten: Das 17. Studioalbum der Band trägt den Titel “Humanoid”, veröffentlicht wird es am 26. April 2024 via Napalm Records. Mit einem Video zu “Humanoid” stellen ACCEPT jetzt den Titelsong vor.

In “Humanoid” beschäftigen sich ACCEPT mit dem Thema KI:

“Der Song spielt mit dem omnipräsenten Thema der Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI). Auf eine seltsame Art und Weise sind wir in sehr bewegte und aufregende Zeiten eingetreten… Die digitale Revolution hat enorme Auswirkungen, wahrscheinlich größer als alles, was die Menschheit jemals gesehen hat. Die industrielle Revolution war gewaltig, aber das hier könnte noch größer sein und wir stehen erst am Anfang. Die Melodic Death Metal-Band DECROWNED hat mit “Rainworld” einen Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Persona Non Grata” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Finnen, die davor zwei EPs veröffentlicht haben.

“Persona Non Grata” wurde von Tero “TeeCee” Kinnunen gemixt und von Mika Jussila gemastert. Erschienen ist das Album, welches mit einem Cover-Artwork von Jukka Turunen ausgestattet wurde, am 23. Februar 2024 via Rockshots Records.

Toronto’s The Shadow Majlis presents his debut album “The Departure” fusing elements of eastern modes with post-punk. Revolving around Ali Jafri (known as a member of David J’s live band, Pigface and various other projects), this record was produced and mixed by David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Tool, David Sylvian, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Real World Studios).

Also on board are David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) and drummer-percussionist Rakesh Tewari (Jaffa Road, The Special Interest Group) next to Dakhabrakha’s Olena Tsybulska, Mark Gemini Thwaite (The Mission, Peter Murphy, MGT, Tricky), Anne Bourne (Loreena McKennitt, Jane Siberry), Tuvan throat singer Soriah and more.

Mit einem Video zu “Venus In Flames” stellen DOOL einen weiteren Song aus ihrem kommenden Album vor. Die neue Platte der Niederländer heißt “The Shape of Fluidity” und erscheint am 19. April 2024.

“‘Venus in Flames’ handelt davon, sich von gesellschaftliche Erwartungen zu lösen, Geschlechterrollen auszulöschen und dabei zu lernen, sich selbst zu lieben”, verrät Sängerin Raven van Dorst. “Der Text ist ein laut gesungener innerer Dialog. Regisseur David Fitt hat den Text in bewegte Bilder übersetzt. Es ist auch der Eröffnungstrack unseres neuen Albums ‘The Shape of Fluidity’, in dem die noch schwelende Asche des Alten Platz für etwas Neues und Aufregendes macht. Selbstliebe ist der Schlüssel!”

Als erste Single stellten DOOL ein Lyric-Video zu ‘Hermagorgon’ vor. Raven van Dorst erklärt, warum die Band diesen Song ausgesucht hat:

“Hermagorgon’ war einer der ersten Songs für ‘The Shape of Fluidity’, er gab uns die musikalische Richtung vor. In dem Song geht es darum, Raum zurückzuerobern, aus binären Zwängen auszubrechen und sich der Welt  zu stellen. Das ist etwas, mit dem sich jeder auf seine Weise identifizieren kann. Allerdings ist dies einer der persönlichsten Songs auf dem Album. Er beschreibt die innere Reise, die ich in den letzten Jahren durchgemacht habe. Der Song zeigt auch die Geburt des kollektiven Songwriting-Geistes, auf dem das ganze Album basiert, sowie die Handwerkskunst des Produzenten Magnus Lindberg. Wir haben lange darauf gewartet, dies mit euch zu teilen.”

Die Grunge / Alternative Rock-Band LOWLIVES hat einen Labeldeal bei Spinefarm Records unterschrieben. Erstes Zeugnis dieser Zusammenarbeit ist der Release des neuen Albums “Freaking Out”, welches am 31. Mai 2024 erscheinen wird.  Das Debütalbum der Band wurde von Adrian Bushby in den Chapel Studios produziert. Mit “Loser” gibt es nun auch eine zweite Single.

“Loser ist ein Liebeslied über einen selbsternannten ‘Loser’, der sich in jemanden verliebt hat, den er ebenfalls als Außenseiter sieht”, erklärt Sänger und Gitarrist Lee Downer. “Beide sind genauso unbeholfen und seltsam wie der andere und wünschen sich, gemeinsam Verlierer zu sein. Musikalisch ist es definitiv der poppigste Song auf der Platte und eine Ode an das Alternative Radio der 90er Jahre.”

Vor einigen Wochen ist die erste Vorab-Single “Liar” mitsamt Video-Clip erschienen.

“Ich habe “Liar” mitten im ersten Covid Lockdown geschrieben”, sagt Sänger Lee Downer. “Nachdem sich die Panik irgendwie gelegt hatte, kam der Song in etwa 10 Minuten zusammen. Textlich ging es anfangs darum, ein tapferes Gesicht aufzusetzen und so zu tun, als ob alles in Ordnung wäre, obwohl das wahrscheinlich nicht der Fall war… ich habe mich fast selbst davon überzeugt, dass alles in Ordnung sein würde. Als wir in Lukes Studio an dem Demo arbeiteten, das ich geschrieben hatte, schrieben wir den Rest des Textes und es ging mehr darum, jemand zu sein, der man nicht ist. Das Gefühl, nicht dazuzugehören, bis zu dem Punkt, an dem man sich eine Scheinwelt schafft, um sich wohler zu fühlen. Man möchte eigentlich die Wahrheit sagen, aber man hat sich so sehr in die Lügen hineingesteigert, dass sie zur eigenen persönlichen Wahrheit geworden sind.”

The Dutch electro rock act Darker is set to release their debut album “Memento” on March 1, 2024. The album marks the band’s transition from releasing singles and EPs to their first full-length project. Formed during the 2020 pandemic, the band consists of Jeps Salfischberger, Evil-ien Rombouts, and was later joined by Valerio Recenti.

The creation process took place in their Tilburg home studio, with Recenti contributing from his studio in The Hague. The collaboration has produced 87 songs, leading to the release of the singles “Love is Gonna Save Us” and “Hope” in 2021, followed by the EPs “Rainy Days” and “Wild Rose” in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Note that their song “Enough” received a Song Of The Year nomination by 3voor12 Tilburg, ranking 13th.

NIRO KNOX hat mit “Save Me” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album des in Israel geborenen und in Nigeria aufgewachsenen Solo-Künstlers.

Mit sechzehn Jahren entdeckte der Musiker die transformative Kraft der Musik, als er in einer dunklen Phase seines Lebens über PINK FLOYDs “Coming Back To Life” stolperte. Der Song inspirierte ihn dazu, psychiatrische Hilfe in Anspruch zu nehmen und führte schließlich zu seiner Entlassung aus der Armee. Jahre später fand sich Niro in einer Vielzahl von Jobs wieder, vom Pizzaboten bis zum IT-Ingenieur, während er gleichzeitig seiner Leidenschaft für die Musik nachging.

“Save Me” wurde in den Snap Studios in London aufgenommen und wird am 24. Juni 2024 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es einen Video-Clip zum Titeltrack.

David J, known for his work with Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, is set to release a career-spanning triple album titled “Tracks from the Attic” on May 3. This release will be available in digital format, on CD, colored vinyl LP, and as a super deluxe box set art edition.

The album, which was initially released as part of Record Store Day’s RSD Black Friday 2023, comprises home demos recorded between 1984 and 2004. These tracks were personally selected by David J from his archives.

The super deluxe art edition, limited to 70 copies, will include triple colored vinyl and CD box sets, autographed artworks by David J, and original source cassettes. This special edition is exclusive to the Independent Project Records (IPR) store.

KERRY KING veröffentlicht erste Single “Idle Hands”
Mit “Idle Hands” bei YouTube stellte KERRY KING Anfang Februar den ersten Song der Platte vor und verspricht:

„Wenn du jemals SLAYER in irgendeiner Phase unseres Schaffens gemocht hast, gibt es etwas auf dieser Platte, das dir gefallen wird, sei es klassischer Punk, schneller Punk, Thrash oder einfach nur Heavy Metal!“

Josh Wilbur hat “From Hell I Rise” produziert, eingespielt wurde das Album in zwei Wochen in den Henson Studios  in Los Angeles. Über die Zusammenarbeit mit KERRY KING sagt Wilbur:

„Er ist Kerry King von SLAYER, ich habe diese Band millionenmal gehört. Er ist einfach präsent. Kerry hat kein übersteigertes Ego, aber er besitzt ein gesundes Selbstvertrauen, was eine gute Sache ist. So stellt man sich einen Rockstar vor und wünscht sich ihn für seine Band. Er wirkt nie wie ein Idiot oder böser Kerl. Aber er weiß, was er will und redet nicht um den heißen Brei herum. Er sagt nicht einfach: ‚Das geht so nicht’, sondern weiß genau, wie er die Sache haben will. Sehr direkt, aber immer mit dem erforderlichen Maß an Respekt und Können. Es hat wirklich Spaß gemacht, mit Kerry zu arbeiten.“

Laut King befasst sich sein neues Material mit:

„diversen religiösen und kriegsnahen Themen. Musikalisch zwischen schweren Riffs, punkigen Einlagen sowie doomigen und düsteren Elementen. Dies alles versetzt mit einer höllischen Geschwindigkeit. Zur aktuellen Besetzung der Progressive Doom Metal-Band gehören Jan Rechberger (AMORPHIS) und Niclas Etelävuori (FLAT EARTH, ex-AMORPHIS) sowie die beiden langjährigen Mitglieder Mark Kelson und Richie Poate.

Für ihr siebtes Album hat das finnisch-australische Projekt einige Gäste gewinnen können: Auf “Skinwalker” sind Tomi Joutsen und Santeri Kallio von AMORPHIS zu hören, außerdem waren KREATOR-Gitarrist Sami Yli-Sirniö und Kehlkopfsänger Albert Kuvezin (YAT-KHA) an der Platte beteiligt.

INTER ARMA stellen mit “New Heaven” den Titelsong ihres neuen Albums vor.  Die neue Platte der Noiserock-Band aus Richmond erscheint am 26. April 2024 via Relapse Records.

Das neue Album ist geprägt von miesen Erfahrungen, wie Bandchef T.J. Childers berichtet:

 “New Heaven ist die Essenz aus vier Jahren voller Widrigkeiten, von Nahtoderfahrungen, mehreren Mitgliederwechseln und einer Pandemie. Das Album ist musikalisch gesehen ein neues Kaptiel für uns, wir haben unser Songwriting an Orte gebracht, die uns bislang völlig unbekannt waren. Constantin Königs neue Black Metal-Band KOHLRABENSCHWARZ veröffentlicht am 29. März 2024 das Debütalbum „Im finstren Tal“ über House Of Inkantation. König, der von 1997 bis 2011 bei LUNAR AURORA aktiv war und in der experimentellen Rockband BALD ANDERS spielt, kehrt mit dem 2023 aufgenommenen Album zu seinem Black Metal-Ursprung zurück.

Amidst the dizzying lights and the taste of root beer and subpar pizza, you spot your crush. Yet, before you can muster the courage for a conversation, your rivals, Julie and Nicki, sweep in with their poodle perms and the unmistakable scent of Electric Youth, leaving you to nurse a fluttering heart in your heart-patterned sweater.

As you find your rhythm on the rink, steering clear of the more adept skaters, an unexpected tumble sends you crashing to the floor, courtesy of Julie’s mischief. In the midst of your embarrassment and pain, a surprising savior appears: your crush, offering a comforting hand and the solace of the wall bench. “You took quite a spill! How about a root beer?” he proposes, igniting a spark of hope with his unexpected attention and the promise of a phone call, despite the strict two-minute limit enforced by your dad.

At this moment, the essence of “Losing Game” by Kontravoid, featuring Chelsey Crowley from Nuovo Testamento, is deeply intertwined with these timeless memories of the late 80s. With its mysterious intro, the track conjures a shiver of anticipation, leading into a surge of driving bass lines and hauntingly romantic vocal hooks, encapsulating the tumultuous emotions of youthful desire and heartache.

The launch event will be held at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles, and it promises to be an unforgettable night where Kontravoid’s artistic talents will be on full display, immersing the audience in a captivating and pulsating atmosphere. Die Melodic Rock-Band A NEVERENDING JOHN´S DREAM wird am 19. April 2024 ihr neues Album “Coming Back To Paradise” via Pride & Joy Music veröffentlichen. Es ist der erste Release der Spanier aus Barcelona, wo das Album in den Moontower Studios auch aufgenommen und gemixt wurde. Gemastert wurde das Album von Erik Mårtensson, während das Cover-Artwork von Jan Yrlund stammt. Vorab gibt es zum Titeltrack einen Video-Clip.

Ein schwer zu identifizierendes Cover, ein Schriftzug, der eher an eine Death oder Black Metal-Band denken lässt – ADORNED GRAVES aus Kaiserslautern machen es nicht leicht, die Band anhand eines Blicks auf das Cover einzuordnen. Die Band existiert seit 1993, hat in den ersten zwei Dekaden aber lediglich ein Demo zustande gebracht. Seit 2015 folgten dann eine EP und zwei Alben, das letzte davon – “Being Towards A River” – erschien 2020.

Album Nummer drei landete dann aufgrund der Empfehlung eines Bekannten auf meinem Promo-Stapel, wo es dann leider auch erstmal eine Weile verblieb. Anfang des Jahres fand ich dann endlich die Zeit, “The Earth Hath Opened Her Mouth” einen ersten Durchlauf zu geben. Gleichzeitig las ich den Jahrespoll des Kollegen Mirko Wenig. Und welche Scheibe hatte er da zum besten traditionellen Metalalbum des Jahres auserkoren? Exakt, es war “And The Earth Has Opened Her Mouth”. Ein witziger Zufall, der mein Interesse weiter anstachelte.

Auf dem Papier schwierig, doch die Mischung funktioniert – ADORNED GRAVES verbinden Doom und Thrash mit biblisch inspirierten Texten
Auf dem Papier liest sich das, was ADOREND GRAVES uns musikalisch bieten, erstmal schwierig. Eine Mischung aus Thrash und Doom, dazu auch mal folkige Elemente und eine ganze Wagenladung an Gastsängern. Schaut man sich diese an, so stellt man fest, dass es sich größtenteils um Musiker christlicher Bands handelt – und Kobi Farhi von ORPHANED LAND. Das passt, da die Texte von ADORNED GRAVES laut Bandinfo zu großen Teilen vom alten und neuen Testament inspiriert sind. Aber diese ungewöhnliche Mischung funktioniert, wenn auch sicherlich nicht für jeden.

Von Thrash zum Doom und wieder zurück, dazwischen etwas Folk – “The Earth Has Opened Her Mouth” ist kein easy listening Album
Los geht es mit dem folkigen “Epitaph I”, ein größtenteils folkiges Stück, das hauptsächlich von Akustikgitarren und dem Gesang von Ruth Börner getragen wird. Ein kurzer Metalpart zwischendrin, dann klingt das Stück wieder folkig aus. “Pilgrims Path” zerstört die Ruhe danach und entpuppt sich als erst relativ straigther, später aber durchaus breaklastiger Thrasher, veredelt durch den starken, rauen Gesang von Herbie Langhans. Mirko und ich mussten beide bei den trashlastigen Parts, nicht nur bei diesem Song, an die Briten von SABBAT denken.

Beim folgenden “Progenitors” gibt sich dann Kobi Farhi von ORPHANEND LAND die Ehre. Der Song wechselt zwischen Power Thrash und Death Metal, was teilweise etwas zerfahren wirkt, aber durchaus seinen Reiz hat. Auch “Valley Of Achor” bietet uns breaklastigen, kauzigen Thrash, während “Son Of Soil” mit rasantem Thrash und hektischen, aggressiven Vocals von Deafon Graever alles platt macht.

PRAYING MANTIS-Sänger John Cuijpers sorgt für ein gesangliches Highlight auf “The Earth Hath Opened Her Mouth”
“Beyond The Silence” geht dann in eine völlig andere Richtung. Der Song, bei dem Gastsänger John Cuijpers (PRAYING MANTIS, ex-AYREON, diverse Coverbands) die beste Gesangsleistung des Albums abliefert, startet als epischer Doom und entwickelt sich später eher in Richtung stampfender Heavy Metal. Ein fantastischer Song, bei dem vor allem der Gesang herausragt. Bei “On A White Pale Hill” paaren ADORNED GRAVES Thrash und Doom, da passt Simon Bibby von SEVENTH ANGEL als Gast-Shouter natürlich wie die Faust aufs Auge.

Nach dem ruhigen Instrumental “Wind Over Glen” folgt mit “Vaults And Caverns” ein düsterer Death Thrash-Song, bevor “Lord Of The Stone” mit NOMAD SON-Sänger John Cutajar nochmal die reine Doom-Lehre zelebriert. Beim Abschlusstrack “Epitaph II” gibt sich schließlich WYTCH HAZEL-Frontprediger Colin Hendra die Ehre und veredelt mit seinem warmen Gesang den vielleicht besten Song des Albums. Das fast neun Minuten lange Stück ist eine Metal-Ballade, mal mit folkigen Elementen, später auch hymnisch. Ein wunderbarer Ausklang eines großartigen, aber auch fordernden Albums.

“The Earth Hat Opened Her Mouth” ist ein Highlight für Underground-Trüffelschweine
Ich kann Mirkos Begeisterung für “The Earth Hath Opened Her Mouth” voll und ganz nachvollziehen. Die Pfälzer haben mit ihrem dritten Album ein wirklich spannendes, musikalisch abwechslungsreiches Werk geschaffen, bei dem die Band zwar ihrem Anspruch “Old School Metal” jederzeit gerecht wird, dabei aber eben völlig eigenständig klingt. Diese Mischung aus Folk, Thrash und Doom ist ziemlich eigen und natürlich wird man damit auch niemals größere Fanschichten erschließen.

So traurig es ist, aber eine Band wie ADORNED GRAVES ist halt kaum zu vermarkten. Daher mein Aufruf hier an alle traditionellen Metalheads mit offenen Ohren: Hört euch “And The Earth Hath Opened Her Mouth” unbedingt an, ihr verpasst sonst eines der spannendsten Alben des letzten Jahres.

DISILLUSION feiern 2024 das 20-jährige Jubiläum ihres Albums “Back To Times Of Splendor” (2004). Im Zuge dessen hat die Progressive Metal-Band auch eine Tournee angekündigt, bei der sie das komplette Album live spielen wird.

20th Anniversary Re-issue Edition von „Back To Times Of Splendor“
Am 26. April 2024 erscheint außerdem ein Re-Release des Albums „Back To Times Of Splendor“ via Metal Blade Records.

Das Album wurde von Tony Lindgren in den Fascination Street Studios neu gemastert und enthält zwei Bonus-Live-Tracks sowie die „The Porter“-EP aus dem Jahr 2002, die bisher noch nie auf Vinyl veröffentlicht wurde. Die Wiederveröffentlichung erscheint digital sowie als Digipak CD und als Gatefold Doppel-LP in verschiedenen Versionen.

Die erste Single „And the Mirror Cracked (Remastered 20th Anniversary Edition)“ gibt’s ab sofort auf YouTube.

DUN RINGILL, fetter Doom mit Folkanleihen aus Göteborg, kaufen!

Ok, ganz so einfach geht’s dann doch nicht, nur weil man mit der Band befreundet ist. Mit ihren ersten beiden Alben „Welcome“ und „Library Of Death“ haben sich die Jungs bereits einen festen Platz erspielt in der Doomszene. Der Release von „Where The Old Gods Play- Part 1“ jedoch wurde vom August 2023 verschoben bin wir nun be Ende Februar angekommen sind. Gut Doom will Weile haben!

Nun aber steht ganz großes Kino an, eine filmreife Storyline von Basser Patrik Andersson Winberg (Ex-THE ORDER OF ISRAFEL, DOOMDOGS) wurde musikalisch umgesetzt und auf zwei Alben verteilt. Nun also ist es an der Zeit, mit dem ersten Album „150 – Where The Old Gods Play Act 1“ auf Reise zu gehen in düstere Zeiten. Ok, um 150 herum tauchte das heutige Schweden auf den ersten Landkarten auf, aber das ist es nicht. Die Story selbst spielt in Schottland im späten 1900. Aber mit der Geschichte des Albums darf man sich als Zuhörer selbst beschäftigen. Schließlich ist sie ein bedeutendes Element von „Where The Old Gods Play“. Die Lyrics gibt es dann sicher auch wieder auf der Homepage von DUN RINGILL. Gedacht war die Story als Filmscript, erste Gespräche laufen hier bereits.

DUN RINGILL liefern auf „150 – Where The Old Gods Play“ großes Kino
Nun aber schieben uns die Wellen energisch ins Album. Kennt man die Band, so ist man sofort zuhause. Eine zarte Melodie, ein fetter, zurückgezogener Groove, die derben Vocals von Thomas Eriksson (INTOXICATE, Ex-GROTESQUE, DOOMDOGS) füllen den Raum. Man braucht keine Minute um zu erkennen, welche Band hier aus den Boxen drückt. DUN RINGILL haben schon lange ihren ganz eigenen Sound. Der wird jedoch aufgemischt von den cleanen Vocals von Neu-Drummer Neil (Ex-END OF LEVEL BOSS, RAAR). Der Schotte hat eine helle Stimme und bringt eine gar liebliche, sich festsetzende Melodie ein. Ein schöner Kontrast zu den gewohnten rauen, derben Vocals. Eine Bridge, die spätestens jetzt zum Tanze lädt, weil die Folkelemente nach vorn drücken, geschmückt mit einem feurigen Solo. Als Fan von DUN RINGILL schwebt man bereits in Glückseligkeit. Wer die Göteborger noch nicht kennt, der weiß nach dem Opener, wofür die Band steht.

Die hingegen schiebt den Doom nach vorne, das düstere „The Parrish“ schleicht sich zäh und bedrohlich an. Zarte klare Vocals von Drummer Neil, man denkt kurz fast an SWALLOW THE SUN. Die Gitarren zaghaft, der Groove unaufdringlich. Erwarten würde man, dass der Song irgendwann Fahrt aufnimmt. Tut er aber nicht, gut so. Ein schöner Farbklecks ist die dezente uralte Orgel von Per Wiberg (OPETH, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, KAMCHATKA), die mit ihrem kratzigen Schleifladen-Sound einen Hauch von Mittelalter rein bringt. Keine Ahnung, ob Per sowas in der Garage hat oder ob man dafür ins Göteborg Organ Art Center muss. Fragen über Fragen. Den Kopf wieder frei fegt „The Devil Wears A Papal Tiara“. Die kratzige Violine von Sara Uneback täuscht, da ist wieder dieser fiese Groove, mit dem man sich DUN RINGILL nicht entziehen kann. Fetteste Doom-Riffs, gepaart mit Melodien aus der schwedischen und hier und da passend schottisch anmutenden Folklore. Drückt diese durch, dann wird aus dem zähen Bangen ein geschmeidiges Tänzchen. Stillsitzen klappt definitiv nicht, wenn man nicht gerade im Genuss eines Schwedentrunk ist.

Auch „Baptised In Fire“ täuscht mit zarter Flöte von Neil zum Auftakt, baut sich als typische DUN RINGILL-Wand vor einem auf mit fettem Riff, feurigen Leads und diesem unabwendbaren tanzbaren Groove. Über allem thront wieder die fiese Stimme von Thomas. Ja ja, nicht jeder kommt damit klar und mit einer „schönen“ Stimme würde man sicher weiter kommen, sagte so mancher Held nach der Show beim HEADBANGERS OPEN AIR 2022. Aber neben dem eigenen Mix aus Doom und Folk sind es gerade die extremen Vocals, die man sofort erkennt und die dem Bandsound etwas ganz eigenes geben. Ein anderer Sänger? Das wäre nicht mehr DUN RINGILL! Das zeigt auch wieder das zähe „Nathaniels Hymn“, welches das Tanztempo so runter drückt, dass Wadenkrämpfe fast vorprogrammiert sind. Ungewohnt groß, melodisch und catchy die Bridge, gewohnt cool die Leads. Die Violine von Sara singt ihr Lied, wir verknoten uns weiter die Beine. Schön, wie intensiv sich Neil in die Band eingebracht hat. Nicht nur durch sein powervolles Drumming und seine Vocals. Sara ist seine Frau, sie und ihre Violine hatte er also auch im Gepäck.

Neu-Drummer Neil Grant setzt neue Akzente bei DUN RINGILL
Auch „Blood Of The Lord“ beginnt catchy, mit herrlichen mehrstimmigen Gitarren und episch anmutendem hymnischen Singsang. Wir lernen Lucia näher kennen auf ihrem religiösen Weg. Unterstützt wurde Patrik bei der Story vom Religions- und Literaturlehrer Jonas Granath. Der Groove packt wieder zu, zappelig, fast proggig. Die Jungs packen ein paar Kinoreife garstige Backings drauf. Auch die Vocals zeigen wieder krass, wie Thomas mit seiner Stimme arbeitet. Als wieder schönen Kontrast gibt es Spoken Words von Neil, die uns daran erinnern, dass wir hier einer in sich stimmigen, interessanten Geschichte folgen. Amen! Herrlich der anschießende Doompart, der mit rock`n´rollenden Leads Feuer bekommt.

Zumal es auch immer wieder die Gitarren sind, die entzücken. Mit drei Gitarren kann man viel Wumms machen, ja, aber DUN RINGILL gehen hier viel verspielter vor. Jens (LOMMI, Ex-live guitarist DARK TRANQUILLITY) unterstützt oft das fette Fundament von Basser Patrik. Tommy (Ex-SILVERHORSE) und Patric (Ex-SOUTHERN FESTIVAL TRAIN, NEON LEON) toben sich darauf aus, verlassen auch gerne mal das Schema der Kollegen und setzen so ein Sahnehäubchen, um dann wieder zueinander zu finden. Klasse! Nun erwartet man natürlich als Schlusstrack ein theatrales drückendes Liedchen. Da steht „The Last Supper“ bereit, zäh, erzählerisch, der Groove nicht zu weit nach vorn geschoben. Thomas röhrt sich den Wolf, die Gitarren feuern wieder energisch ihre Leads raus. Der ganz klare Schlusspunkt wird nicht gesetzt. Warum auch, die Story geht ja noch weiter und wird noch dramatischer.

Das werden wir aber erst nächstes Jahr erfahren. Vorerst wird uns der erste Teil erfreuen und beschäftigen. Erstaunlich: mit seinen gut 35 Minuten kommt das Album gefühlt viel länger. Vielleicht weil man den Musikern und der Story viel intensiver zuhört. Man kann das Album super nebenher hören, sich den druckvollen Songs oder sich gepflegt dem Doomdancing hingeben. Oder sich intensiver mit der interessanten Geschichte beschäftigen, oder auch gezielt mit dem, was die Musiker hier abliefern, der Kopfhörer wartet. Langweilig wird es nicht. Dabei hilft auch der klasse Sound, druckvoll und transparent, eingefangen von Svein Jensen in den Göteborger Grand Recording Studio und gemastert von Magnus Lindberg (CULT OF LUNA).

Beschäftigt man sich nacheinander mit allen Alben von DUN RINGILL, so hört man deutlich jeden weiteren Schritt zu ihrem aktuellen Level. Man zeigt sich noch mehr zusammengewachsen und klang noch nie so sehr als Einheit. Der Sound ist eigen, und darin öffnet sich die Band immer mehr. Es bleibt spannend, wohin die Reise weiter geht, auf der man diese so sympathische Band natürlich begleiten muss. Natürlich gibt es „150 – Where The Old Gods Play Act 1“ neben CD und Streaming auch auf Vinyl. Hätte man dann nicht gleich ein schickes Doppelalbum machen können? Nein, „Act 2“ wird um einiges länger sein. Daher hat man sich entschieden, das Album zu splitten. Da kann es bei „Act 1“ nur heißen: DUN RINGILL, fetter Doom mit Folkanleihen aus Göteborg, kaufen!

Die schwedische Doom-Band CAVERN DEEP hat eine neue Single online gestellt. “The Peeler” steht u.a. als Visualizer-Clip bei YouTube bereit.

Bei dem Track handelt es sich um eine Standalone Single, um die Wartezeit auf das neue Album zu verkürzen. Ursprünglich war “The Peeler” als Bonus-Track für die kommende Scheibe angedacht, fand aber nun frühzeitig den Weg zum Publikum.

Die Southern Rock / Heavy Metal-Band GREYSTONE CANYON hat nach “We All Become Yesterday” mit “Raging Waters” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Iron & Oak” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “While the Wheels Still Turn” das zweite Album der Australier.

DANKO JONES veröffentlichte 2023 das elfte Album: “Electric Sounds” erschien am 15. September 2023 via AFM Records. Nun folgt am 12. April 2024 eine Neuauflage als “Deluxe Version” inklusive zweier Bonustracks. Einen davon gibt es jetzt schon als Single zu hören: “Waiting For You” im Audio-Stream. Neben der Deluxe-Version erscheint am gleichen Tag auch die 10″-Vinyl-Single “4×10” mit beiden Bonustracks sowie zwei Live-Mitschnitten.

Ein Musikvideo zum Track “Get High?” gewährt außerdem einen Höreindruck der aktuellen Scheibe. Zur zweiten Single “Good Time” steht seit Juli ein Musikvideo bei YouTube bereit – außerdem gibt es auch eine ganz aktuelle Live-Version des Songs vom Graspop Metal Meeting 2023.

“Electric Sounds steht in einer Linie mit unseren anderen Alben. Im Laufe der Jahre haben wir uns einen Sound erarbeitet, dabei bleiben wir.  Aber wenn man es näher betrachtet und mit anderen Alben vergleicht, würde ich sagen, “Electric Sounds” ist ein bisschen schneller. Ursprünglich wollte ich, dass alle Tracks wie unser Song “Cadillac” klingen – schleppend, im Mid-Tempo, heavy und auf den Punkt. Unsere Songs handeln in der Regel davon, dass wir rocken, dass wir rocken wollen, dass wir das Leben genießen, während wir rocken, und manchmal singe ich auch über eine Frau. Ihr könnt keine Überraschungen erwarten!”

Produzent von “Electric Sounds” war Eric Ratz, als Gäste sind  Tyler Stewart (BARENAKED LADIES), Damian Abraham (FUCKED UP) und Daniel Dekay (EXCITER) zu hören.

Die Black Metal-Band ATREXIAL hat einen Plattenvertrag mit Non Serviam Records abgeschlossen. Gemeinsam wird man am 22. März 2024 das Drittwerk “The Serpent Abomination” veröffentlichen. Die Spanier kommentieren den Labeldeal:

“Wir sind sehr stolz darauf, bei NSR zu unterschreiben, denn es bedeutet für Atrexial einen großen Schritt nach vorne auf der Karriereleiter dieses Projekts.

Der Zusammenschluss mit NSR hebt die Band auf eine ganz neue Ebene. Wir glauben fest daran, dass ‘The Serpent Abomination’ ein einzigartiges Werk im modernen Black Metal ist, das aus den Tiefen der menschlichen Seele geboren wurde und eine solide, respektierte und mächtige Plattform verdient, und genau das haben wir bekommen.”

“The Serpent Abomination” wurde von Gerard Porqueres produziert und folgt auf die beiden Platten “Souverain” (2017) sowie “Gargantuan” (2020). Weitere Details zum Album sollen in Kürze folgen.

(Photo by Filipa Xipipa) As they put the finishing touches on their debut album, the Portugal-based synthwave/electro duo Necrø has unveiled their latest single, “Deathward”. This track features on the “Zeitgeist Chrome Vol. 2” compilation, brought to you by the German label, Cold Transmission Music. This collection also showcases the talents from the dark electro and coldwave labelmates Years of Denial, SYZYGYX, Kalte Nacht, and Noromakina.

For the first time, all songs on this compilation are available on vinyl, with some tracks making their debut release. Notably, the compilation enriches its roster with non-label artists Teatre & Years Of Denial and Permament Daylight. Fans can look forward to the full digital release of the compilation on March 29th, while the limited edition vinyl (250 copies) is now open for pre-orders.

Necrø emerges as the newest venture by João Vairinhos, a seasoned musician known for his solo work and collaborations with notable artists such as Hélio Morais (Linda Martini), Ricardo Remédio (LÖBO, RA), and bands like Wildnorthe and LÖBO. For Necrø, Vairinhos has joined forces with Sara English, a collaboration extending from their work together in Wildnorthe.

Die Epic Symphonic Metal-Band CATHUBODUA hat mit “Interbellum” ein neues Album herausgebracht. Es ist nach “Continuum” (2019) das zweite Album der Belgier und erzählt die Geschichte von der Entstehung und Zerstörung einer Kriegsgöttin – von großen Hoffnungen, Macht und Träumen bis hin zu verlorener Liebe und dem Umgang mit einer ewig brennenden Schuld. Als Vorgeschmack steht das Stück “Amidst Gods” bei YouTube bereit.

Reinhören kann man außerdem in die erste Single “Foretelling“, zu der es auch ein Video gibt, sowie “Effigy Of Aftermath” als Clip bei YouTube.

“”Foretelling” erzählt die Geschichte der Prophezeiungen von Badb, einer keltischen Kriegsgöttin, die mit Cathubodua verwandt ist. Sie prophezeite das Ende der Welt, alles Böse, das sich ereignen würde, und den allmählichen Abstieg der Menschheit in Vergessenheit und Sünde”, erklärt Sängerin Sara Vanderheyden.

“Interbellum” wurde von Yarne Heylen (CARNATION) im Project Zero Studio produziert und gemixt und von Erwin Hermsen gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt erneut von Jelle van Loo. Erschienen ist das Album am 23. Februar 2024 via Massacre Records.

San Juan artist, Kevin Shames, aka Basavriuk, had been quietly slipping tracks online as Basavriuk since 2015, but by 2022 he decided it was high time to get serious, and aim for a sound with more structure and definition. Now, Basavriuk is hitting its stride and reaching far beyond Puerto Rico’s sandy borders.

Basavriuk’s latest single, Below and Beyond, delves into the complexities of love and the ease with which one can lose themselves in its depths. The music features rhythmic guitar work reminiscent of traditional post-punk alongside vocals drenched in shoegaze-style reverb, all underpinned by the raw edge of early alternative rock.

Below and Beyond is Basavriuk’s deep dive into self-discovery and healing. It’s like navigating unknown territory, where each step is met with disbelief and struggle. Yet, there’s a strong resolve to rebuild, showcasing the resilience inherent in the quest for wholeness.

On the musical front, Basavriuk pays homage to the post-punk vibes of The Cure’s Seventeen Seconds, blending it with the reverb-drenched vocals reminiscent of DIIV and My Bloody Valentine. Add to this mix the raw energy reminiscent of early Foo Fighters, and Below and Beyond becomes Basavriuk’s anthem for the resilient, delivered with heart and soul.

Prague-based gothic rock band Cathedral In Flames has released a new single titled “Pale Rider”. The song pays homage to classic western films and composer Ennio Morricone. It narrates a dark story involving an occult battle with cancer, with production by John Freyer.

The single’s release is accompanied by a horror-themed music video set in a graveyard, featuring characters inspired by Cthulhu mythology and a reference to Clint Eastwood through the use of a replica of his hat. The band members involved in the video are Ambra, Phil, Gatsby, and Billac, with Gatsby portraying a grave desperado character.

Vocalist and lyricist Phil Lee Fall says of the record, “We’ve always loved and used the western aspects in our take on gothic rock and we’ve taken it to the max in Pale Rider. Cowboy guitars, screaming cowboys, Clint Eastwood and Lovecraftian poetics. Total country overkill. And yet it fires like a very black devils hog on all cylinders.”

In the early 90s, Philadelphia gifted the alternative music scene with Riverside, an earnest group of musicians whose songs wove a gossamer melange of dream-infused rock, tinged with the nostalgic jangle of bygone days, and laced with a subtle undercurrent of melancholy. This ensemble, led by the Kochanowicz brothers—Keith, with his haunting vocals and deft touch on the guitar and organ, and Glenn, with his deep bass lines and harmonies, complemented by Kenneth Jackson’s lead guitar riffs and Geoff Verne’s rhythmic drums—emerged as a beacon of melodic resilience in the face of the music industry’s capricious nature.

Yet, it was with their debut album, One, that Riverside truly soared, embodying the essence of spectral reverberations reminiscent of Echo & the Bunnymen, and the heartfelt yearnings akin to The Smiths. Their sound, however, was distinctly American in its raw passion, an echo of an era that if transplanted to the misty landscapes of Scotland, would have found kinship with the likes of The Lightning Seeds and Belle and Sebastian.

In an age when grunge’s gritty realism dominated the airwaves, Riverside stood as anachronistic heroes, champions of melodic grace in an industry veering towards the jagged edges of rebellion. Yet, the album One remained a steadfast testament to the timeless allure of melody, infused with a British sensibility and the soulful depth of Philadelphia.

The album’s tracks, like Cinnamon Eyes and Waterfall, became anthems of a generation, echoing through the halls of college radio and flickering across the screens of a darker MTV landscape. Cinnamon Eyes, with its buoyant, shimmering jangle-pop reverie and playful percussive beat, captures the essence of an unabashed love song, while Waterfall, with its cascading melodic guitar hooks that flow like their namesake, accompanied by chime-like guitar accents that dance in the wind, perfectly encapsulates the earnestness of a golden era straddling the early ’80s post-punk and the burgeoning alternative rock scene.

The album One stands as a sanctuary for the hopeless romantics and dreamers, a portal to a golden-hued era of alternative rock, its timeless sound never fading into obscurity but rather aging like fine wine, growing more profound with each listen.

In recent years, Riverside has rekindled the flames of their legacy, gracing stages alongside The Ocean Blue in sold-out reunion shows, with whispers of more to come in 2024. In a thrilling development, Riverside has partnered with Lost in Ohio to bring One to vinyl, a first for this cherished debut. This Kickstarter-funded reissue is a call to arms for those who wish to hold a piece of music history in their hands, complete with t-shirts, posters, and a dive back into the riverside of yesteryears.

With the March 1st deadline approaching, the band’s Kickstarter campaign is a call to action for those interested in contributing to the revival of the band’s legacy.

Die Alternative Metal-Band DEATH DEALER UNION hat im Herbst 2022 einen Labeldeal bei Napalm Records unterschrieben. Die Band wurde von Drummer und Songwriter CC McKenna gegründet. Weitere Band-Mitglieder sind die Gitarristen Doug Weiand (CLOSED CIRCLE) und Valentin Voluta (SEAS ON THE MOON), Bassist Jonathan “Jonny” Heinz (HIDDEN DIVINITY) sowie Sängerin Lena Scissorhands (INFECTED RAIN).

Mit einem Video zu “Beyond Heaven” stellt die Formation nun einen weiteren Track ihres Debütalbums “Initiation” vor, das am 22. September 2023 auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital über die neue Plattenfirma erschienen ist.
