“Eg Er Framand” (Norwegisch für “Ich bin eine Fremde / ein Fremder”) heißt die neue, sechs Titel umfassende EP mit einer Spiellänge von etwas über 28 Minuten. Ist ja auch kein Album, aber auch keine Single mehr. Ein Extended Play (EP) halt. Wobei ich sagen muss, dass die hier eingeschlagenen Wege durchaus das Zeug zu wahrlich Großem (noch Größerem als bisher) haben. Man darf hiernach gespannt sein, welche Wege Kathrine künftig geht. 

SYLVAINE dürfte (sollte) vor allem Fans von Blackgaze-Größen wie ALCEST ein Begriff sein. Ist ja auch klar, denn hört man erst einmal Kathrines bisheriges Schaffen, erkennt man sofort Parallelen zur entsprechenden Szene. Parallelen ja, aber ohne zu kopieren. Den eigenen Stil hat sie definitiv gefunden. Dafür hat die in San Diego (Kalifornien) geborene Norwegerin ein Händchen. Oder zwei. Und wenn nicht, holt sie sich Unterstützung, denn beim 2016er-Album “Wistful” saß kein Geringerer als Stéphane “Neige” Paut (Kopf von ALCEST, Mitwirkender bei u.a. LES DICRETS, AMESOEURS und LANTLÔS) sowohl im Studio als auch bei diversen Livegigs hinter den Drums. An sich lässt sich die Musik von Shepard sehr schwer kategorisieren, ständig wird man überrascht. Und das ist das Tolle daran. Ihre bisherige Diskografie ist durch die Bank weg spannend und auf höchstem Niveau einzigartig.

Und nun eine neue Veröffentlichung. Was erwartet uns? Da ich die Ehre habe und die EP noch vor der Veröffentlichung rezensieren darf, kann ich eins vorwegnehmen: Hier ist alles anders! 

Ihrem Ruf als Multiinstrumentalistin macht Kathrine diesmal alle Ehre. Jedes Instrument wurde von ihr selbst eingespielt. Wer jedoch auf ein instrumentales Gewitter hofft, wird allerdings enttäuscht. Selbst klassifiziert sie ihr Werk als “Ethereal Norwegian Folk”. Sparsam und nur ganz vereinzelt werden Orgel, Gitarren, Synthesizer und Trommeln eingestreut.

Es kristallisiert sich eine Essenz purer akustischer Anmut heraus.

Mehrere Tonspuren von Kathrines wundervoller Stimme übereinander gelegt resultieren zeitweise im Chor. Die beiden Stücke “Arvestykker” (Titel 2) und der Namensgeber der EP “Eg Er Framand” (Titel 6) kommen sogar ganz ohne Instrumente aus. 

Als bekennender Fan Nordeuropas habe ich im Laufe der Jahre ein paar Bands in meinen Favoriten „gespeichert“, die meinen persönlichen Soundtrack der nordischen Länder geschrieben haben und auf meinen Reisen wirklich immer im Auto laufen müssen. Wer schon mal da oben war, der weiß, dass die Autofahrten zuweilen lang sind. Und so gehören zum Beispiel WARDRUNA, OFDRYKKJA, GRIFT, DYNFARI und SÓLSTAFIR definitiv ins Cockpit. Und nach “Eg Er Framand” nun auch SYLVAINE. Einfach unglaublich, wie es Musikerinnen und Musiker schaffen, tongewordene Bilder vors innere Auge zu malen. Verträumte Melodien laden dazu ein, einfach die Augen zu schließen und sich fallen zu lassen.

Und auch jetzt packt mich, SYLVAINEs neues Werk im Hintergrund laufend, die Sehnsucht, einfach aufzubrechen. Mit nur einem Ziel: Einsamkeit. Auf einem Felsen am tiefschwarzen Fjord stehen, tief die frische Luft einatmen und in meiner eigenen Existenz versinken. 

Textlich behandeln die komplett in Norwegisch gehaltenen Stücke Themen wie das stetige Mit- und Gegeneinander von Licht und Dunkelheit. Es herrscht sehr viel Raum für verschiedenste Interpretationen. Ich persönlich deute das Licht hier als Lebensspender und die Dunkelheit als endgültigen Gegenpart dargestellt. Erdrückend die Furcht vor dem Ungewissen und der Endgültigkeit – befreiend das Gefühl des Friedens, der Finsternis entkommen zu sein. Verpackt in spannende Metaphern. Wie gesagt – viel Raum für Spekulationen. Die Texte zu lesen (und zu übersetzen) lässt die EP tatsächlich zeitweise in neuem Licht erscheinen.

Abschließend möchte ich das neue Werk von SYLVAINE wirklich jedem ans Herz legen, der bereit ist, sich einmal auf etwas anderes als schroffen Metal einzulassen. Die Death-Grind-Band FULL OF HELL veröffentlicht am 26. April 2024 ihr sechstes Album „Coagulated Bliss“ über Closed Casket Activities. Als ersten Song gibt es „Doors To Mental Agony“ zu hören, zu dem es auch ein Video gibt.

Sänger Dylan Walker über „Doors To Mental Agony“: „In diesem Leben gibt es viele Türen. Das ländliche Amerika existiert in einem Vakuum mit seinen eigenen alltäglichen Schrecken und Sackgassen. „Coagulated Bliss“ wurde von Kevin Bernstein aufgenommen und von Taylor Young gemischt. Das Mastering übernahm Nick Townsend. 2023 veröffentlichten FULL OF HELL die Kollaborationen „Suffocating Hallucination“ mit PRIMITIVE MAN und „When No Birds Sang“ mit NOTHING. Das letzte Studioalbum „Garden Of Burning Apparitions“ erschien im Herbst 2021.

Die Death Metal-Band SUFFER hat mit “Inhalent Caustic Foray” einen weiteren Track ihres kommenden Albums “Grand Canvas of the Aesthete” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “konQbine” (2015) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus South Dakota, deren Anfänge bis Anfang der 90er-Jahre zurückreichen.

“Um ehrlich zu sein, hätte ich nicht gedacht, dass wir noch ein Album veröffentlichen würden”, gibt Sänger C.R. Petit zu. “Die meisten von uns haben sich mit anderen Bands und Projekten, Familien und Karrieren weiterentwickelt. Aber SUFFER hat für jeden von uns etwas unglaublich Besonderes. Etwas, das es fast unmöglich macht, einfach wegzugehen.”

“Grand Canvas of the Aesthete” wurde von Andreas Linnemann im Hop House Studio gemixt und gemastert und wird am 29. März 2024 via Wise Blood Records erscheinen.

Die Progressive / Death Metal-Band THE MOOR hat nach dem Lyric-Video zu “The Overlord Disease” und einem Video-Clip vom Titeltrack mit “This River Spoke” ein weiteres Video ihres kommenden Albums “Ombra” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Year of the Hunger” (2012) und “Jupiter’s Immigrants” (2018) das dritte Album der Italiener aus Venedig.

Monospore is a Danish duo set up in 2009 by Jannik Vittrup and Søren Brandstrup. They last year released their second full length album “Into Darkness”. The opus features ten EBM songs driven by aggressive bass lines and carried by cold tunes. The vocals are harsh but not too much. “Into Darkness” is an accomplished production which I can only but recommend to EBM-lovers.

Q: You guys seem to be involved with music since quite a long time and have been busy with multiple projects and music styles. Tell us a bit more about your background, the different projects and how did you finally come to set up Monospore?

We made music inspired by Depeche Mode and Camouflage and a bit of Front 242/Nitzer Ebb on an Amiga computer and we added two EMAX’s to the setup. However, we never actually got anything released. During the many following years, we made several different music styles with various singers, in styles like Ace Of Base, Paul Elstak etc.

I have only made some small project alone and with a few other people, but nothing was ever released.

Jannik: Besides the projects I did with Søren I also did some solo projects called, Executor, Bioreactor & Johhny Mnemonic amongst others. I also collaborated with other musicians most know is probably my collaborations with Thomas Elers on Cellblock X, Cbx Project and Latex Empire.

After a very long break we went to see a lot of live acts like Combichrist, Nitzer Ebb in the late 2000’s, and decided to follow our hearts in our new project just doing the music that gives us energy and that we love. We have always been huge fans of EBM (Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 etc.) We started to experiment with a lot of track, sounds and vocal styles before we found our style. First real Monospore track was “Blue Haze” which ended up as a bonus track on our debut album “Control The Game, Regain Control” from 2012.

Q: Monospore has been set up in 2009, but you’ve been mainly busy releasing singles and the album “Into Darkness” during 2023. How comes and how do you perceive the evolution from the band from the first albums till “Into Darkness”?

Monospore: We had a long break after our debut album “Control The Game… Regain Control!!!”. We both have families, and in that period we both build houses. At the same time, we both had professional careers as our day jobs. Søren finished his Master-degree in Building Physics in 2016, and Jannik finished his academy degree in Business IT a little earlier. We did do a lot of demos in the time in between the albums and one track (cf. “Fall For Me”) in 2018 for the Danish Electro v.2 compilation though.

There has been a huge leap in the production from our first album “Control The Game… Regain Control!!!” to the second album “Into Darkness”. First of all, we build a new studio in between the 2 albums and second, we also decided the overall sound to be more ‘old-school’ and less distorted than on our first album.

In our opinion the tracks on the new album have a much better and dynamic sound, but we appreciate both albums and are super proud of them. In the process for album 2, we did several new tracks that didn’t fit on the new album. These take Monospore in another direction and will be included on our next album.

Q: What more can you tell us about “Into Darkness” and what do you try to reflect by its title?

Monospore: We are very much into very hard music and find our inspiration in that as well as we wanted to evolve our sound. Nothing inspired us for the album as such except some of the bands we listen to ourselves. We love the soundscapes of Gary Numan’s productions as well as Alan Wilder’s and the album also has a much more dynamic sound than our first one. The title was mainly inspired by the cover photo location as well as it is the title of the last track on the album.

Q: What makes the chemistry between both of you and who’s taking care for the different aspects of the composing- and production process?

Jannik: I see it as a very shared process, we do a lot of demos separately and then work on them together. Often, we do some details on the tracks separately and then send it to each other to listen to. We always finish it together in the studio and do the mixing and mastering together as well.

Q: What about Monospore as a live band? How do you transpose the songs from the studio to the stage?   

Søren: We always strive to make our live set as hard as possible and bring some special versions for the audience though it is important for us to keep the sounds and vibe from the original track. It is always very motivating to feel the response from the audience and see the venue boiling of aggressivity and moving bodies. We are very grateful for the very positive responses we have got from our performances so far. Now we are working on getting booked outside of Denmark which is a bit hard when you are not yet an established name.

Q: All works have been released by Delta-Ego which I think is your very own label, right? How do you manage all the aspects aside of composing music like promotion, distribution, management etc…?

Monospore: You are right, Delta-Ego is our own label that we formed in 2012. To be honest our focus is writing the songs and creating the music and eventually playing it live.

The promotion and distribution are a necessity but often take away the focus from what we love, which is producing and playing the music and it can be hard doing promotion when having a full-time job and family.

This enigmatic bird, at once a trickster and a sage, embodies the duality of creation and destruction, offering insights into the empowerment derived from wisdom, adaptability, and the mystical. From Odin’s feathered emissaries to the Tlingit creator, the raven’s shadow dances over the collective human psyche, urging us to embrace the complex interplay of light and shadow within ourselves and the world around us.

This Friday Sacred Bones celebrate the parallel releases of Xmal Deutschland’s Early Singles 1981-1982 (including two bonus tracks), and the debut solo album from Xmal Deutschland’s inimitable front-woman Anja Huwe, Codes. To whet our appetites, Anja Huwe celebrates the mystical power of the shadowy corvid with Rabenschwarz, a spectacular new single, and an Expressionist video from Codes.

“The main theme is the raven, a classic symbol for black (raven black), which stands for empowerment and is also a symbolic transmission of wisdom,” explains Huwe. The raven also stands for the rediscovery of mystical paths. The emerging egg represents fear but also stands for rebirth.

Directed by Anja Huwe and Stefan Heintzenberg, the video for Rabenschwarz (raven black) ties in with the album artwork, inspired by a private collection of photos from the late 1920s and public domain film footage. The clip also includes video bootleg footage from early Xmal Deutschland shows, as well as textual collages and text boards, created by Anja Huwe.

“We combined old film footage—such as The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) and White Zombie (1932)—with additional material filmed in the basement of a derelict bunker in Hamburg,” Huwe explains. We’ve intercut all the subjects with private outdoor footage filmed at Hamburg Harbor, Brooklyn, and New York City.”

The source material from the original films employ distorted sets, stark lighting, and surreal imagery to externalize the characters’ inner turmoil and a pervasive sense of doom. The iconic crumbling mansion serves as an extension of the characters’ psyche, its deteriorating structure mirroring their mental disintegration. Huwe cleverly and seamlessly merges the century-old Expressionist visual language—characterized by distortion, shadow, and angularity—with her unique style, infusing the narrative with suspense and the supernatural. She casts herself as a mystical creature inhabiting this psychological depth and underlying tension, effectively bending the fabric of time and space and artfully forging her own interpretation…and she does it all in a spectacular black feathered collar.

Early Singles (1981-1982) is a map of their foundational movements, just seconds before takeoff. The band’s pursuit of something greater is palpable with this release, a reflection of a time that introduced accessibility to new means of making music following the onset of punk. This reissue includes two bonus tracks; Kaelbermarsch (originally from the compilation Lieber Zuviel Als Zuwenig) and a gritty live version of Allein (originally from the compilation Nosferatu Festival), which is shared online today along with a video montage of footage from this era of the band’s career.

Initially inspired by the diary entries of Moshe Shnitzki, who, at the age of 17, left his home in 1942 to live in the cavernous White Russian forests as a partisan, Codes is about the human experience and what extremes can do to an individual. “The result is a poetic, musical cosmos that encompasses the following themes: forest, fear, pain, loss, violence, and loneliness but also beauty, longing, hope and the will to survive,” Huwe explains.

The thematic extremities cause an erraticism to Codes—a passing thunderstorm, a cyclonic burst of nature’s force—but one that exudes anticipation amidst the chill. With elegant production by Mur and Huwe and mixing and mastering by Jon Caffery (Joy Division, Gary Numan, Einstürzende Neubauten) epic builds crash and disseminate, the sleek synthesised drones of sound even feel claustrophobic at times.

Die Blackened Melodic Death Metal-Band VOLCANDRA hat mit “Seven Tombs” einen Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “The Way of Ancients” veröffentlicht.

“Kurz gesagt: “Seven Tombs” ist ein echter Reißer”, sagt die Band. “Es ist der fünfte Track des Albums, dessen ätherisches Intro (mit dem Gesang von Emily Low von Oubliette) dem Hörer eine kleine Verschnaufpause verschafft, bevor der Song richtig loslegt. Dieser Song ist eine Liebeserklärung an den Thrash Metal, enthält aber auch Black- und Death-Metal-Momente.”

“The Way of Ancients” ist nach “Into the Azure” (2020) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Kentucky und erzählt eine Geschichte, die insbesondere von der klassischen, frühen Diablo-Videospielserie sowie vom Eskapismus der Schwert- und Zaubererfilme der achtziger Jahre wie Conan, Clash of the Titans und Excalibur beeinflusst ist.

Das Album wurde von Mike Low produziert und ist am 1. März 2024 via Prosthetic Records erschienen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Varises Otak. Mit “Fouled Sanctity” gab es zuvor schon einen weiteren Video-Clip.

“Der Song handelt von einem tapferen Krieger, der sich in die Tiefen einer entweihten Kathedrale wagt, die von Dämonen befallen ist, gegen die er kämpfen muss. Am Ende seiner Suche ist er von der Seele der Bestie besessen, die die Ursache für all das Chaos ist”, erklärt die Band.

VOLCANDRA sind Sänger Dave Palenske (CHAOS SANCTUARY), die Gitarristen River Jordan (BLIND SCRYER) und Jamie DeMar, Bassist Andrew Casciato sowie Drummer Mike Hargrave.

Noise Rock aus Seattle: GREAT FALLS haben am 15. September 2023 via Neurot Recordings ihr viertes Album “Objects Without Pain” veröffentlicht. Mit “Trap Feeding” gibt es nun einen Video-Clip. Weiterhin wird die Band im April 2024 auf Tour sein.

Zur aktuellen Besetzung gehören Sänger/Gitarrist Demian Johnston, Bassist Shane Mehling und Drummer Nickolis Parks, der mit dem neuen Album seinen Einstand bei GREAT FALLS gibt.

Das Debüt „In The Eye Of Death We Are All The Same” (2021) war ein Ausrufezeichen, der Nachfolger wiederum ist nun ein deutliches Statement: So ausgereift der Sound der Metalcore-Band schon auf dem Erstlingswerk war, Ketten wollen sich DEFOCUS nicht anlegen. Mit deutlich mehr elektronischen Spielereien und Experimentierfreude am Mikro öffnet „There Is A Place For Me On Earth“ dem Quartett neue Horizonte.

Der Nu-Metal-Einfluss im groovenden Opener „Let The Bond Be My Grave” verschiebt den Fokus in Richtung Zugänglichkeit, was die dreckigen Breakdowns in Stücken wie „Watch Me Bleed“ oder „Biased“ noch härter treffen lassen. Gleichzeitig sorgen vielschichtige Synth-Effekte für ein dichtes wie dezent futuristisches Soundbild, das oftmals erfolgreich vom eigentlich konservativen Songaufbau ablenkt. Dass sich DEFOCUS in ihren meist knackigen Kompositionen auf die üblichen Schemata verlassen, kaschiert das Quartett geschickt mittels dieser zahlreichen Feinheiten.

Keyboards und Samples unterstützen dabei den variablen Gesang Simon Müllers, welcher seinen brutalen Screams nun regelmäßig klar gesungene Passagen und kratzige Nu-Metal-Vocals zur Seite stellt. Ein wenig erinnert das beizeiten an THE OKLAHOMA KID, wobei DEFOCUS auf Albumlänge doch deutlich in der groove-betonten und djent-beeinflussten Schiene des Genres zu Hause sind. Das spiegelt sich auch in der Produktion, die entsprechend laut und dabei dynamikarm ausfällt, was „There Is A Place For Me On Earth“ einerseits ordentlich Punch gibt, auf der anderen Seite jedoch gerade Bass und Gitarre zu sehr ineinanderlaufen lässt.

Büßt die Platte im Vergleich zum Vorgänger diesbezüglich an Schauwerten ein, fangen DEFOCUS die weniger spektakuläre Gitarrenarbeit mittels mutiger Songwriting-Ansätze wieder auf. Neben einem getragenen Stück wie „Don’t Let It Hurt Me“ sticht vor allem der HipHop-/Rap-Crossover von „Hybrid Anthem“ für hochgezogene Augenbrauen. Dass dieses Wagnis aufgeht, spricht wiederum für das zielsichere Gespür der Gruppe, die mit dem humorlosen „Flatlines“ zwischendurch auch mit dem Kopf durch die Wand stürmen kann. Atmosphärisch und introspektiv findet das Titelstück schließlich die richtigen Worte, um das intensive Zweitwerk zu einem würdigen Ende zu führen – ein weiteres Statement der vier Musiker, sich trotz Genreverbundenheit in kein bestimmtes Korsett zwängen zu lassen.

This month, Alfa Matrix, the Belgian label, has embraced a Kraftwerk-inspired mode, marking the announcement of its third electro-pop release reminiscent of Kraftwerk’s iconic sound. Following Elektroklänge and Cubic, it’s now the turn of Metroland to take the spotlight.

The Belgian duo, comprising Passenger A and Passenger S, has announced a new album for May, “Forum”, the follow-up to their March 2023 released “0” album. The new album was already teased by the 3-track single “Industry” (which was released earlier on Bandcamp exclusively first and will from tomorrow on hit all other platforms).

The new Metroland album is available for pre-order on CD via the Alfa Matrix webstore and as download / streaming via Bandcamp (with other platforms to follow upon the release date).

Die Mittelalter Rock- / Power Metal-Band FEUERSCHWANZ hat für 19. April 2024 das neue Album “Warriors” auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital angekündigt. Das Besondere an der Platte: Ersmtalig wurden die Songs komplett in englischer Sprache eingesungen. Hierzu haben die Erlanger ein neues Stück komponiert, eine Cover-Version aufgenommen und zehn weitere Tracks ihres Backkatalogs in die Fremdsprache übertragen. With guitar riffs sharp enough to cut through the existential dread of modern life and melodies so haunting they could spook a ghost, Masterfreak, Raskolnikov’s new single, sparks an intricate dance of melancholy and despair into a foot-tapping, head-bobbing affair.

Named for Dostoyevsky’s protagonist Rodion Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov conjures a “polyphony of unordered consciousness, leading to the division of the self.” Diving headfirst into the abyss of sound, this Swiss-Spanish-French trio (Jérôme Blum, Jaime Fernandez da Costa and Mathieu Pawelski-Szpiechowycz) serves up a blend of shoegaze and post-punk that’s as brooding as a cloudy day, yet still irresistible with Masterfreak. Picture a gloomy cocktail—bittersweet with a twist of ennui—shaken, not stirred, in the dimly lit backroom of an underground club. This is music for the soul that wears its heart on a black, tattered sleeve.

Formed in 2015, Raskolnikov crosses both geographical borders as well as the boundaries between melancholy and euphoria.

Raskolnikov was formed by Mathieu Pawełski-Szpiechowycz (bass/vocals) at the end of 2015, traveling between Geneva, Paris, and Constance. Pablo Garrido (guitar) and Jérôme Blum (drums) joined the project at the beginning of 2017. Mathieu, Jérôme, and Pablo performed together between 2013 and 2016 in a project-based in Geneva. Quentin Allamand joined Raskolnikov on guitar and keyboards in the autumn of 2019. Today, the group is mainly based in Konstanz/Kreuzlingen and Biel.

The first album, Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall, was released in 2017 on Manic Depression Records. The second album, Lazy people will destroy you was released in 2020 on Icy Cold Records and Manic Depression Records. Between releases, the band played over a hundred gigs across Europe. They’ve shared the stage with Dear Deer and Tisiphone.

Masterfreak, the new single from the French-Swiss-Spanish post-punk trio, heralds a new EP in spring and a third full length album slated for autumn 2024.

A whole ten spins around the sun have whizzed by since John Carpenter, Hollywood’s foremost horror renaissance man with a penchant for creating eerie atmospheric soundscapes to accompany his films, hunkered down with his son Cody and godson Daniel Davies to cook up what would eventually bubble over as the first Lost Themes. This was Carpenter’s grand entrance into the world of non-film tunes, marking the start of a second act so spectacular it could only befit a man who’s made a career out of keeping us on the edge of our seats. With those pulsating, synth-soaked tracks, the trio laid down the groovy groundwork for what’s turned into an epic encore in Carpenter’s storied career, proving the maestro of the macabre can make magic happen not only on screen, but in the sound booth, too.

Through the winding, wild years, the Carpenter-Davies trio has been churning out tunes like there’s no tomorrow, dropping a cool dozen sonic bombs that range from full-blown studio masterpieces to the spine-tingling scores of David Gordon Green’s Halloween reboots. The gang’s got music in their marrow – Daniel’s father is Dave Davies of The Kinks. For years he has dropped by the Carpenters’ L.A. beat factory to riff with the fam or take the stage at one of John’s legendary movie wrap shindigs. It’s this kind of kismet that makes Lost Themes IV: Noir glide smoother than a greased-up DeLorean. The trio hit the creative jackpot, and Noir is the proof in the pudding.

Lost Themes IV: Noir is hitting the shelves and streaming platforms this May 3rd, courtesy Sacred Bones Records. To whip up a frenzy, the trio dropped a killer music video for My Name Is Death, the album’s lead single – which doubles as a bite-sized noir thriller, all thanks to the directorial genius of Ambar Navarro.

“Noir is a uniquely American genre born in post-war cinema,” states John Carpenter. “ We grew up loving Noir and were influenced by it for this new album.  The video celebrates this style and our new song, My Name is Death.”

This track is a whole new playground for Carpenter and the gang, riding in on a wave of post-punk bass that’s as relentless as Chandler’s Philip Marlowe himself. The atmosphere’s thick with synths, the drum machine’s got a heartbeat of its own, and just when you think it can’t get any hotter, in comes a guitar solo that sets the whole scene ablaze. The clip a classic mystery with a twist, featuring a lineup of faces you might just recognize, including Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood), Staz Lindes (The Paranoyds), and Misha Lindes (SadGirl) for bringing the drama. Buckle up, because My Name Is Death is about to take you on a wild ride.

“Sandy [King, John’s wife and producer] had given John a book for Christmas, of pictures from noir films, all stills from that era,” Davies says of the lightbulb moment for Lost Themes IV. “I was looking through it, and I thought, ‘I like that imagery, and what those titles make me think of. What if we loosely based it around that? What if the titles were of some of John’s favorite noir films?’” Like the film genre they were influenced by, what makes the songs on Lost Themes IV “noirish” is sometimes slippery and hard to define, and not merely reducible to a collection of tropes. The scores for the great American noir pictures were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies work off a sturdy synth-and-guitar backbone. The noir quality, then, is something you understand instinctively when you hear it. “Some of the music is heavy guitar riffs, which is not in old noir films,” Davies notes. “But somehow, it’s connected in an emotional way.”

Vorab gibt es zu “Alda” (zu Deutsch “Welle”) einen Video-Clip. Die selbstmörderische Symbolik der Songs stammt von dem isländischen Sprichwort “Að ganga í sjóinn” oder “ins Meer gehen”, das in Island bis heute eine Form des Selbstmords ist.

ORBIT CULTURE gehen im Frühjahr 2024 auf Europatour
Seit Anfang 2024 haben ORBIT CULTURE außerdem ein neues Label: Künftig arbeitet die Formation mit Century Media zusammen.

Im Frühjahr 2024 gehen die Schweden allerdings erstmal auf Europatour, um unter dem Motto “Descending Into Madness” das neue Material live vorzustellen. Geplant sind dabei auch Konzerte in Köln, Berlin, Hamburg, München, Zürich (CH), Wien (A) sowie Dresden (Termine s. unten). Im Vorprogramm treten je nach Region DEFECTS (UK & EU) bzw. Die Stoner Rock-Band HIGH DESERT QUEEN hat einen Labeldeal bei Magnetic Eye Records unterschrieben. Dieser Deal umfasst den Release gleich mehrerer Alben – das erste davon trägt den Titel “Palm Reader” und erscheint am 31. Mai 2024. Es ist nach “Secrets of the Black Moon” (2021) das zweite Album der US-amerikanischen Band aus Texas. Einen Höreindruck gewährt die Single “Ancient Aliens” bei YouTube.

Aufgenommen wurde die Platte von Casey Johns, Mix und Mastering übernahm Karl Daniel Lidén. Für das Artwork zeichnet PabloRR verantwortlich.
