Es ist das vierte Album des Solo-Projekts von Stelios “Soulreaper” Makris, der sich an den Drums und bei der Produktion von Vagelis Felonis (BURIAL HORDES, CHAINSAW, SACRAL RAGE) und von Violinist Matthew Dakoutros (ART OF SIMPLICITY) unterstützen ließ. Zudem steuerten Hildr Valkyrie (FOLKEARTH) und Alexandros Antoniou (MACABRE OMEN) Gast-Vocals bei.

Die Alternative Metal-Band BEAUTIFUL SKELETONS hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die US-Amerikaner ihre neue EP “Temperance” veröffentlichen. Die nach “Vegvisir” zweite EP der 2018 gegründeten Band wird am 10. Mai 2024 erscheinen.

Vorab gibt es zum Opener “Letter to a Narcissist” einen Video-Clip. In diesem Lied geht es um die schmerzhafte Erkenntnis, dass man manipuliert wurde. Der Text erkundet den Weg von der Rechtfertigung des Verhaltens eines Narzissten bis zur Erkenntnis des Schadens, den er verursacht hat. Letztendlich geht es darum, die eigene Macht zurückzuerobern und sich dem Missbrauch zu stellen, den man erlitten hat.

Die Blackened Grindcore-Band APES hat nach einem Video-Clip vom Opener “Coffin” – mit Gast-Sängerin Madi Watkins (YEAR OF THE KNIFE) – mit “The Great Fire” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Penitence” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Lightless” (2017) das zweite Album der Kanadier, die dazwischen mit “Lullabies for Eternal Sleep” (2022) eine EP veröffentlicht haben.

“Penitence” wurde gemeinsam mit Marc-Antoine Desjardins und Raphael Malenfant bei Broil Audio aufgenommen, von Andy Nelson bei Bricktop Recording gemixt und von Will Putney bei Graphic Nature Audio gemastert. Für das Cover-Artwork zeichnet Sänger Alexandre Goulet verantwortlich. Release-Termin ist der 14. Juni 2024 via Secret Swarm Records.

TOMY LAISTO (HATEFORM, ARC SPECTRA, Ex-MORS PRINCIPIUM EST) hat nach “Circular Spill” – mit Gast-Sänger Rainer Nygård (DIABLO) – mit “Sun Under” eine weitere neue Single von seinem neuem Album “Penumbra” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album des Solo-Künstlers und wird am 7. Juni 2024 erscheinen. Als Gäste konnte der Finne DEREK SHERINIAN (Ex-DREAM THEATER) and Christian Määttä (ARC SPECTRA) begrüßen.

“Der Song entstand an einem Augustabend auf meiner Terrasse, als ich den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten in der Luft spürte, vom Sommer zum Herbst. Man kann es irgendwie spüren. Es geht um das Ende einer angespannten Beziehung, um das Wissen, dass das, was kommen wird, unausweichlich ist, so wie man weiß, dass die Jahreszeit zu Ende geht.”

And my favorite cut is the one coming the closest by Kraftwerk. “Bordcomputer – Radio Edit” even sounds as the best song I’ve heard from this band thus far. It’s ultra cliché but also ultra-cool. The songs are well-crafted and easy to listen to.

– – – : The main point that hurts with this type of project is the lack of originality. They adapted Kraftwerk into a sweeter edit but without the magic of the one and only Kraftwerk.

Die Metalcore / Groove Metal-Band NOTSM hat mit “Only Death Brings Silence” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album des von Gitarrist Matt Barkley gegründeten Projekts. Erscheinen wird das Album am 3. Mai 2024. Vorab gibt es nach dem Lyric-Video zu “The Hedonic Treadmill” mit “Humans” nun ein weiteres Video.

Die Hardcore / Noise Rock-Band COUCH SLUT hat mit “Wilkinson’s Sword” einen Video-Clip von ihrem neuen Album “You Could Do It Tonight” veröffentlicht.

“Das 1772 in England gegründete Unternehmen Wilkinson Sword blickt auf eine lange Geschichte zurück und ist für seine hochwertigen Rasiergeräte bekannt. Was ich an FULL OF HELL liebe? Dass sie die Welt nicht nur anzünden, sondern, dass sie echte Kunst daraus machen. Das Triptychon „Trumpeting Ecstasy“, „Weeping Choir“ und „Garden Of Burning Apparitions“ gab dem in großen Teilen irgendwie konservativ gewordenen Grindcore das Extreme zurück, durch diese Wall Of Noise, die eben nur diese Formation aus Ocean City, Maryland auffahren kann. Doch was soll nach den letzten Alben, die das methodische Chaos der US-Amerikaner nahezu perfektionierte, noch kommen?

Die Antwort liefert die Kollaboration „When No Birds Sang“ mit NOTHING aus dem vergangenen Dezember. Hier lernten FULL OF HELL mehr über direktes Songwriting, und konsequent wie sie sind, setzten sie die neue Art, Alben zu gestalten, gleich um. „Coagulated Bliss“ klingt purer und direkter, FULL OF HELL haben sich in Richtung klarer Songstrukturen entwickelt. Das frisch aufgeräumte Soundbild ist dabei noch immer verzerrt und roh genug, um die Energie zu erfahrbar zu machen, andererseits fehlen die Unberechenbarkeit und das Chaos – und somit schlicht die Power.

FULL OF HELL verstören auf „Coagulated Bliss“ nur teilweise – zwischendurch bietet das Album fast schon biedere Genre-Kost.
Nicht falsch verstehen: Wir sprechen über die Standards von FULL OF HELL. „Coagulated Bliss“ ist ein hässliches Death-Grind-Album, es hebt sich ab vom klassischen NAPALM DEATH-Worshipping vieler Kollegen und beschreitet den Weg weiter, den FULL OF HELL als den eigenen ausgewählt haben, nur gehen sie dieses Mal nicht so durch Mark und Bein, wie sonst. Bestes Beispiel ist der sechsminütige Sludge-Monolith „Bleeding Horizon“, der im Prinzip ein neues „Armory Of Obsidian Glass“ von „Weeping Choir“ darstellt, aber ohne diesen Überbau in Form von Harsh Noise und der zusätzlichen Stimme, die der Musik diesen Extraschub Intensität verliehen haben.

Es ist ein wenig, als würden FULL OF HELL mit „Coagulated Bliss“ hier offenbaren, dass sie auch ansonsten nur mit Wasser kochen. Das beginnende „Half Life Of Changelings“, die Stampfer „Doors To Mental Agony“ und „Gelding Of Man“, die komplexen Nummern „Transmuting Chemical Burns“ und „Vacuous Dose“ sowie klassisch brutale Grind-Songs wie „Vomiting Glass“ und „Gasping Dust“ liefern nur selten aufregende Genre-Kost und hätten vom Gitarrensound der letzten Alben profitiert. FULL OF HELL haben dennoch Momente, in denen sie zu begeistern wissen: Immer dann, wenn die Band in Richtung Industrial schielt, wie im langsamen groovenden „Fractured Bonds To Mecca“ mit seinen verzerrten Rhythmen und dem abschließenden „Malformed Ligature“, das sich von Mosh in Richtung Todesmarsch mit dissonantem Saxophon selbst disruptiert.

Seligkeit durch Selbstdistruption: Wenn FULL OF HELL ihr Songwriting konsequent betreiben, ist „Coagulated Bliss“ am besten.
„Coagulated Bliss“ schürt mit seinem chaotisch-hässlichen Artwork optisch Erwartungen, die musikalisch nicht eingehalten werden können. FULL OF HELL treten mehrere Schritte zurück und fokussieren sich auf Direktheit im Sounddesign, vor allem im Gitarrensound. Sie bleiben mit dem Songwriting aber doch komplex genug, um ihr bisheriges Publikum zumindest größtenteils bedienen zu können und werden damit live sicherlich eine gute Figur machen. Ja, „Coagulated Bliss“ ist gut, und nein, bei „Coagulated Bliss“ ist der Titel nicht uneingeschränkt Programm. Die Grindcore-Champions dieser Tage bleiben weiterhin GRIDLINK mit ihrem Wunderwerk „Coronet Juniper“.

The Santee, California artist, Trit95, doesn’t need the bells and whistles. With an entire catalog created in his bedroom, Tristan Lilyquist perfected the hazy, indie-infused synthpop that feels innocent and pure—like the confessions written in a teenage diary. Trit95 began during the height of the Soundcloud era around 2017 and gained traction to listeners far and wide, “influenced the twee-pop anthem throwbacks made new again by the Tumblr era.”

This fusion of swirling, honey-laden sounds are now assembled into a self-titled compilation release of songs from 2017 to 2021 by Dream Recordings with its lead single, “Candy.” The sophisticated sweetness of the track sits somewhere between contemporaries Secret Attraction or CD Ghost, but with the simplistic charm of Jesus & the Mary Chain. Trit95 will be out on June 28th—we caught up with Lilyquist to chat about Trit95’s quaint beginnings and the band’s promising future.

What has the transition from writing music in your bedroom to playing on stages with peers such as Body of Light, Secret Attraction, and CD Ghost been like? 

I started making music in my room with no intention of ever really sharing with anyone, spurred by the indie bands I was listening to at the time. And going from making music in secrecy to performing in front crowds has been far from natural for me. I am always a nervous wreck before performing but it’s always worth it after. Being able to share the stage with those bands and others that I’ve looked up to has been surreal. Everyone has been very supportive and helpful and I’m grateful for that.

The compilation is a time capsule of tracks from the late 2010s through the Covid era, did you notice any markers in time where your sound began to morph?

I feel like the sound has remained relatively similar. As time went on I feel myself struggling to not over complicate the songs and just keep it simple! Making music on the DAW nowadays the possibilities are endless. Which is has its pros and cons.

What were your initial inspirations? And have they changed over time?

Initially probably just whatever feelings I had at the time. Mainly probably just some young romance type of thing. Time has just been flying and as I get older I feel the importance of trying to write some wrongs of the past and finding my way. As I’m sure is the same for most people my age. I envy how some artists can find inspiration out of anything. I’m just trying to stray away from being hyper dramatic and creating something that is true.

Are there overarching themes in your music? Did you discover any threads when compiling the compilation? 

One thing I noticed is that I have reoccurring lyrics that have turned into my go-to words. So I’m going to have to limit myself from using those in the near to possibly long future. When I was given the opportunity to compile these songs it was overwhelming thinking about how so much has changed and so much has not.

It’s still so wild to me that you could make studio quality music on a $200 dollar laptop from Walmart.

Do you find that having limitations in production (ie working in your bedroom versus a studio) helps in the creative process?

Making music in the bedroom is the coolest thing ever. Knowing that you could make something bedside that you could share the world could have an impact. It’s still so wild to me that you could make studio quality music on a $200 dollar laptop from Walmart.

What is next for Trit95?

I want to get a solid live set together and set up a tour. I have never really left the southwest and I want to see the rest of America. Got a collab in the works with a artist from Germany “ Flawless Issues “ that I’m excited to share.  Try to get back on the skateboard and not spend too much time at the bar haha!

Die Melodic Death Metal-Band SOULLINE stellt ihr neues Album “Reflections” mit einem Lyric-Video zu “I’m So Sorry” bei YouTube vor.

Auch einen Clip zu “Say Goodbye” gibt es bei YouTube. Der Track folgt auf den ersten Preview-Song “Look At The Stars” und will eine Botschaft vermitteln, wie die Schweizer verraten:

“‘Say Goodbye’ ist nicht einfach nur ein Song; es ist eine Kritik, verpackt in einer melodischen, aber heftigen Umarmung, die darauf abzielt, die flüchtige Natur des Erfolgs und die oft oberflächlichen Verlockungen des Scheins zu zerlegen. In environments marked by tedium or a lack of stimulation, one may find themselves resorting to dissociation—a psychological phenomenon characterized by a detachment from the present setting. This response can emerge as a method for coping, providing a mental reprieve from the ennui and mitigating emotional discomfort. Symptoms typically include extensive daydreaming, an acute sense of separation, or a feeling of estrangement from one’s own physical and mental presence.

The new single and video from Germany’s Caput Medusae, I Wear Black ‘Til I’m Dead, explores themes of isolation and melancholy against the backdrop of an indifferent urban landscape. The composition, marked by a mournful organ and sharp synth chords, underscores a pervasive sense of alienation. As the protagonist, played by the stone-faced Joy Maria Bai, navigates Berlin’s nocturnal streets, she encounters individuals engulfed in their own crises. Her solitary journey through the city is ghostlike, and her encounters, spectral. In a deserted library, she briefly aligns with another solitary figure (Rhys Williams), enhancing the video’s haunted ambiance. However, redemption arrives in a pulsing nightclub where, amidst a crowd, she rediscovers her vitality through dance, reanimating her connection to the world around her.

The music video for I Wear Black ‘Til I’m Dead, filmed and Directed by Ramzi Hibri, captured in the shadowy corners of Berlin in November 2023, marks another collaboration between the Director and Executive Producer Manoela Chiabai. The duo, recognized for their prior engagements with bands like Slowdive, Idles, and Depeche Mode, bring a seasoned touch to the visual portrayal of isolation and revival in the heart of the city. Their craftsmanship infuses the video with a stark, yet profound, exploration of urban solitude and communal discovery.

You Can’t Negotiate With Zombies unveils a fusion of post-punk, good old-fashioned gothic charm and eerie electro-wave, teasing the potential brilliance of newcomers Caput Medusae. Die Deathcore-Band BODYSNATCHER hat einen neuen Song samt Musikvideo veröffentlicht: “Severed” bei YouTube.

Auch den vorherigen Track “Murder8” kann man sich via YouTube ansehen. Zudem enthält das Stück einen Gastauftritt von HATEBREED-Frontmann Jamey Jasta. Den ernsten Hintergrund von “Murder8” erläutert Schlagzeuger Chris Whited:

“‘Murder8’ ist ein Straßenname für Fentanyl. Ich habe meinen älteren Bruder 2022 durch Fentanyl verloren und meine jüngere Schwester nur ein Jahr später, 2023, ebenfalls durch Fentanyl. Opioide werden seit den frühen 2000er Jahren in alarmierendem Ausmaß verschrieben und haben Millionen von Familien auf der ganzen Welt, insbesondere in den Vereinigten Staaten, betroffen. Wenn du jemanden durch eine Überdosis verloren hast, ist dieser Song dir gewidmet.”

Die Psychedlic / Stoner Rock-Band von BLACK PYRAMID hat mit “The Paths of Time Are Vast” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das vierte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Massachusetts, die im Mai und Juni nach Europa auf Tour kommen, und das erste seit über zehn Jahren.

“The Paths of Time Are Vast” wurde von Justin Pizzoferratu im Sonelab produziert und erzählt eine epische Geschichte von Verlust und Erlösung, Tod und Wiedergeburt sowie Feuer und Frost. Die Metalcore- / Djent-Band ALLEVIATE hat eine weitere Single veröffentlicht: “Gravity” gibt’s als Clip bei YouTube und enthält ein Gastfeature von YouTube-Influencer Nik Nokturnal.

Der Track folgt auf die Songs “Within Worlds”, “Trying To Survive” sowie “Better Pt. I”, das als Musikvideo bei YouTube bereitsteht.

Zuvor teilte die Gruppe im November 2021 den Clip zum Song “Broken”. Die Band kommentiert die Nummer wie folgt:

“Broken handelt davon, Depressionen zu überwinden, die von dieser grausamen Welt verursacht wurden. Von allen im Stich und allein gelassen, findet der Protagonist tief in seinen eigenen Gedanken Kraft.
Wieder versucht ALLEVIATE zu lindern und dafür steht die Band; über persönliche Erfahrungen und den Versuch, den Hörern einen Weg zu weisen.

Darüber hinaus gab es im Frühjahr 2021 ein Musikvideo zur Debüt-Single “Die For Me”.

Im selben Jahr hatte die Formation einen Plattenvertrag mit Arising Empire abgeschlossen. ALLEVIATE sind Sänger Timo (OUR MIRAGE), Shouter Marius (BREAKDOWNS AT TIFFANY’S), Gitarristen Ramon (THE EVOLUTIONIST) und Marc (WE ARE PERSPECTIVES) sowie TIME, THE VALUATOR-Drummer Yunus.

In 2008, the Russo-Georgian War over South Ossetia led to Russian advances into Georgia, intensifying geopolitical tensions. This conflict resulted in many displacements and some Russians moving to Tbilisi. Despite being Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi faces internal conflicts over its pro-Russian government stance, contrasting with many citizens who oppose Russian influence and advocate for greater national independence and alignment with Western policies. This dynamic fuels ongoing political and social challenges.

Now, UK avant-pop artist Nick Hudson delves into the complex geopolitical landscape of the Russo-Georgian conflict in his album Kanda Teenage Honey. This expansive 16-track collection was recorded in a vast former Soviet movie studio in Georgia, under the looming presence of the Ukraine war. Hudson’s album emerges from a blend of geographical and musical explorations, venturing into territories rarely explored in music, reflecting a deep, resonant response to the tumultuous backdrop.

Kanda Teenage Honey was recorded at Leno Studio and Sano Studio in Tbilisi, working alongside Ilya Lukashev, and mastered to analogue tape by Paul Pascoe (Barry Adamson, Sleaford Mods) at Church Road Studios in Hove. In crafting this project, Hudson not only teamed up with remarkable Georgian musicians but also with his friend Seva, a Russian dissident and former associate of Navalny, who escaped the clutches of the FSB.

Kanda Teenage Honey delves into themes of protecting what is sacred from the corrupting grip of church and state, both spiritually and materially. Throughout the album, Hudson articulates a storyline that challenges kleptocratic power structures. He provides insightful reflections on several tracks, unraveling the stories embedded within his music.

 “He contributes a poem narrating his thoughts on exile, through which I’ve layered field recordings of the recent Tbilisi and Paris protests, where many of us got tear-gassed,” Hudson remembers. “This geopolitical tension has inevitably made its way into the lyrical and musical texture of the record via the songs Hollow Man and Sky Burial While Alive. It also contains oligarch-hexing magic realism and a tribute to that vastly-neglected demographic – the old-school homosexual….Musically it encompasses art rock, black metal, ambient music, agitprop folk, charred goth rock, symphonic vastness and piano ballads -all infused with the energies and landscape of Georgia.”

“(Kanda Teenage Honey) itself refers to a very real preservation of innocence derived from a story I heard of a local villager whose teenage son was shot and killed,” says Hudson. “The father had his son’s body preserved in honey. As such, there are secular hymns for peace and lucid stillness, tales of saints de-martyring themselves and falling in love free of judgement from anachronistic scrutiny – a thinly veiled parable of queer love.”

“Two very close friends died within six months of each other during my first year in Georgia – there are requiems in the songs Archipelago and Bardo, plus an acappella tribute to the Siberian husky that helped me grieve them during a retreat to the sublime mountainous region of Khevsureti by the Chechen border, where despite being an ostensibly Orthodox country, pagan traditions are still passionately observed.  I dreamed eighty-percent of ‘Bardo’ in the energised serenity of this beautiful region while mourning my friend Jesse. Patrick, honoured in ‘Archipelago’, was one of my earliest mentors and a dynamically brilliant pianist.  They are much missed,” explains Nick Hudson.

“Ortolan references the summer of 2021, when I fled to the same Isle Of Wight monastery at which Scott Walker had sought refuge in the sixties, as my mental and physical health hit a nadir and I was forced to leave the city I’d called home for twenty years. This Heat refers to a return journey from a plague necropolis at the Chechen border, where giddily drunken park rangers piloting a 4X4 hurtled us passengers down a treacherous mountain pass and I briefly thought it might be the last song I’d ever write.  Since then, I’ve come to learn that Georgians are some of the virtuosic drivers in the world, even drunk, and I need not have feared.”

Mixed by Toby Driver of Kayo Dot, who also features on the album, this record boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists. These include Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai), Stuart Dahlquist of Asva, Burning Witch, and Sunn O))), Lizzy Carey (Bat For Lashes), Robert Wyatt’s collaborator Alfreda Benge, legendary German performer Christopher Nell (known for his work with theatre visionary Robert Wilson), and soprano prodigy Poppy Efemey.

In 2021, Nick Hudson released his album Font Of Human Fractures and the K69996ROMA: EP. A year earlier, his band The Academy of Sun dropped The Quiet Earth. Throughout his career, Hudson has worked with icons like Wayne Hussey of The Mission, Matthew Seligman (David Bowie, Tori Amos), Shara Nelson (Massive Attack), and queercore pioneer GB Jones. Beyond music, Hudson’s creative scope extends to painting, filmmaking, and novel writing.

Die Doom Metal / Stoner Rock-Band RIFFLORD hat mit “39 Serpent Power” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “26 Mean and Heavy” (2010) und “7 Cremation Ground / Meditation” (2018) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus South Dakota. Der Titel und ein Stück weit auch die Ausrichtung eines Album ergeben sich im Übrigen dadurch, dass die Band blind eine Karte aus dem Tarotdeck Secret Dakini Oracle zieht.

“39 Serpent Power” wurde noch vor Covid-19 geschrieben und aufgenommen und dann wie eine Zeitkapsel bis 2024 vergraben, um am 21. Juni 2024 via Ripple Music veröffentlicht zu werden. Vorab gibt es zu “Serpent Power” einen Video-Clip.
