Mit Allem ohne scharf: DEFECTS bedienen auf ihrem Debüt „Modern Error“ jegliche Geschmäcker, halten sich aber gerade bei der Würze vornehm zurück. Das hat durchaus seine Vorzüge, wie allein der Abwechslungsreichtum der 13 Songs inklusive Intro und Interlude nahelegt. In den modernen und melodischen Metalcore integriert sich die Formation durch diesen Ansatz somit problemlos, auch weil die entsprechenden Referenzen stets nur einen Katzensprung entfernt scheinen.

Vor allem BURY TOMORROW schießen uns immer wieder in den Kopf, wenn sich „Scapegoat“ und vor allem „End Of Days“ sowohl rifftechnisch als auch gesanglich an den Briten zu bedienen scheinen. Gemeint ist das durchaus als Kompliment, denn die fehlende eigene Note kompensieren DEFECTS durch ein fabelhaftes Gespür für eingängige Strukturen und teils packende Melodien. Das erprobte Rezept bleibt deshalb über die komplette Laufzeit spaßig, obschon die großen Momente aus dem exakt gleichen Grund ausbleiben müssen.

“Modern Error” ist ein prima Einstiegsalbum für Metalcore-Neulinge
Wenn „Dream Awake“ das Tempo reduziert und der melodischen Gitarre einen kraftvollen Refrain im ANY GIVEN DAY-Stil zur Seite stellt, ist das natürlich eine ebenso sichere Bank wie die Melodeath-Anleihen in „Another Heart To Bleed“. Allein die fehlende Originalität ist es jedoch auch hier, welche der Euphorie einen Dämpfer verpasst. Ob wir nun SOILWORK, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, ALL THAT REMAINS oder einen der zuvor genannten Künstler heranziehen, in seiner Gesamtheit ist „Modern Error“ so erwartbar wie vertraut.

Mit Konstanz und ohne Durchhänger etablieren sich DEFECTS dank kompetenter Umsetzung aber quasi aus dem Stand in der zweiten Reihe des Genres: eine achtbare Leistung, die wir in Teilen auch Frontmann Tony zuschreiben möchten, der in „Echo Chamber“ Gefühl beweist, zwischendurch aber auch mit gehörig Nachdruck ins Mikro bellen kann. Dass die Briten darüber hinaus noch Soli („Gone To Waste“) und richtige Riffs schreiben, anstatt sich auf Synthesizer und Downtuned-Trends zu verlassen, spielt „Modern Error“ zusätzlich in die Hände. Ein durchaus gefälliges Werk also, das durch den milden Charakter seiner Songs ganz bewusst ein breites Publikum ansprechen will und so zum prima Einstiegsalbum für alle Metalcore-Neulinge avanciert.

Die Thrash Metal-Band BLOOD FEAST hat mit “Infinite Evolution” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das vierte Album der US-Amerikaner aus New Jersey und sowohl der erste Release seit der 2018er-EP “Chopped, Sliced and Diced” als auch der erste Release, auf welchem Band-Mitbegründer und Gitarrist Adam Tranquilli auch die Vocals über hat.

“Infinite Evolution”, das von Gitarrist CJ Scioscia produziert wurde, wird am 12. Juli 2024 via Hells Headbangers erscheinen. Vorab gibt es mit “Outbreak” einen Video-Clip.

He fell down crying…calling out he cried…cried for understanding…
and the noise turned to music.
As the world seems to spiral further into chaos and uncertainty, there is an undeniable hunger for something pure and transcendent to guide us through the madness. Picture a celestial hymn, one that resonates with the very essence of the universe. Its notes, woven from stardust and echoes of forgotten dreams, would rise above the clamor of our troubled times, offering a beacon of hope and solace.

In the midst of discord, Sublime Eternal Love, the new song from David Lynch and Chrystabell from their upcoming album Cellophane Memories (via Sacred Bones), reminds us of the beauty and harmony that still exist, even if obscured by the shadows of our current reality. This is a song for and from the soul—an ethereal melody that lifts our spirits and reminds us of the possibility of redemption and peace. As we navigate through the tumult, this celestial hymn would be our guiding star, illuminating the path to a future where beauty and serenity prevail.

As with most Lynch songs, the words are minimal, poignant, and deeply moving. Chrystabell’s warmth comes through as her vocals overlap and intertwine with the lush synth organs, channeling the heavens. In this song, we find a moment of stillness, a reminder of the eternal, a glimmer of light – or a flash, in this case –  in the darkness.

Lynch’s hypnotically compelling video for Sublime Eternal Love feels like an exoneration from a benevolent higher power and a reverence for the message of love and hope that it brings. His artistry shines brightly as a sweetly smiling Chrystabell appears as three different versions of herself in the same frame, each singing a different line and harmonizing with the other two. Near the end of the video, gray clouds sweep swiftly past, mirroring the trance-like quality of both the visuals and the music. The entire piece becomes a mesmerizing dance of light and sound, a poignant reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is beauty and solace to be found.

As with much of Chrystabell and Lynch’s past work, Cellophane Memories makes us ponder the unknown. Within every mystery lies fragments of feelings and ideas; the realm of dreams and whispers; the topsy-turvy nature of time; memories of what once was; a distant light shining from the darkness; music found within silence; and certainly love. Some questions, it seems, are meant to be lived rather than solved.

Chrystabell, a hyper-creative polymath based in Texas, is a familiar face to David Lynch fans: they have collaborated on a series of musical projects for years, and you may recognize her as Agent Tammy Preston in Twin Peaks: The Return. She also has recently collaborated with Marc Collin of Nouvelle Vague to perform ambitious covers of songs by The Cure as Strange As Angels, released the brilliant solo album Midnight Star in 2022, and created the short film Cosmic Crown in 2022.

The origin of Cellophane Memories traces back to a vision David Lynch had during a nighttime walk through a forest of tall trees. Over the tops of those trees, he saw a bright light. As he recalls, the light transformed into the lilt of Chrystabell’s voice, revealing a secret to him. From these mysterious convergences of light and sound, day and night, starry sky and black forest, their collaboration has continued to blossom. Their work, born from these enchanting moments, carries the magic and mystery of that initial vision, a blend of ethereal whispers and nocturnal revelations.

This is the third record from the artistic duo. For Cellophane Memories, they have ventured through different portals, crafting songs that unfold in fairytale forests, mountain peaks, swimming holes, crepuscular highways, and darkened bedrooms. These settings evoke both loneliness and romance, the kind of sublime places where one might wander alone in search of a lost lover. Yet they also exist as shapeless atmospheres—of color, weather, and breath: blue and white skies, red roses, darkening thunderheads, swirling winds, and summer perfumes. These elements swiftly envelop the traveler, immersing them in the supernatural sensations of other worlds, where every whisper and shadow hints at magic just beyond reach.

“(The album) contains “many doors that are left open to wonder, wander and get turned around in,” says Chrystabell. “It’s like mood music – not that it creates mood, but more that it reflects your own.”

Die Progressive Metal-Band ADAMANTRA meldet sich mit einer weiteren Single zurück: “Treacherous Valour“. Im April ist mit “An Unfinished Tale” der erste Release der Finnen seit zehn Jahren erschienen. Beim Song handelt es sich um eine Ballade, die eine tragische Liebesgeschichte zwischen einem Wärter und einem Gefangenen in einer historischen Epoche erzählt.

The latest video from Pet Shop Boys, A new bohemia, is a striking juxtaposition of past and present. It casts a poignant spotlight on how cherished facets of life have slipped quietly away, evoking a deep-seated longing for the simplicity and freedom of bygone days. Dancing, both literal and metaphorical, emerges as a powerful symbol of joy and community—an essence seemingly lost to the relentless march of gentrification. Much like the Kinks’ Come Dancing, it stands as an anthem for those wistfully reminiscing about their wild, carefree pasts. Amidst undertones of regret and the chaos of modern living, there is a palpable yearning for a fresh beginning, a return to that wild bacchanal of yore.

Pet Shop Boys— the legendary synthpop duo compromised of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—have recently released Nonetheless, a record they’ve lovingly labeled their “queer album.”  The record’s latest single, A new bohemia, is a track that directly draws its inspiration from the 1970s queer artist and activist ensemble Les Petites Bon-Bons, and feels like a song that came from their era.

The music video transcends visual accompaniment, becoming an artful reunion of creative minds. Andrew Haigh, the auteur who is celebrated for his masterful portrayal of human fragility, collaborates once more with Russell Tovey, the magnetic actor from the gay drama Looking. The video opens with Tovey, a solitary figure gliding gracefully across a roller disco rink—a tableau of poignant nostalgia. The scene then shifts to Tennant and Lowe, their melodies merging with the rhythm of the sea as they perform on a deserted beach. The video culminates in the roller disco’s neon-lit floor, where Tovey’s solitary skate evolves into an intimate, sensual dance with another man.

“We had a lovely sunny day in Margate filming this video with Andrew Haigh, fresh from his success with All of Us Strangers,” Pet Shop Boys shared. “Thanks to Andrew and all concerned, in particular the many local residents who took part, including Russell Tovey and Tracey Emin.”

“I have loved the Pet Shop Boys since the release of Please,” says Haigh. “I have every album and have seen them play live many times over the years. Getting to make a music video with them has been a dream come true.”

Der Song ist seit dem 6.6.24 auf den gängigen Streaming-Plattformen veröffentlicht. Entgegen dem, dass SATANINCHEN seine beiden Alben „Panda Metal Party“ und „YEAH EVIL“ bisher nicht auf Streaming-Plattformen veröffentlicht hat, wird der Song „Fußball ist unser Leben“ derzeit nur auf digitalem Weg veröffentlicht. https://sataninchen.de

Ursprünglich plante SATANINCHEN noch eine weitere Version als Komplementär-Song. Der sollte eher einen militanten Marsch-Charakter haben und der Text minimalistisch geändert werden. Somit hätte man einerseits den derzeitigen globalen Zeitgeist-Wahnsinn eingefangen und andererseits einen Blick zurück geworfen. Das hätte mehrere Blickwinkel und Perspektiven eröffnet.

Der Text wäre dann in etwa so gewesen:
Wahnsinn ist unser Leben,

Die Grindcore / Death Metal-Band FEED THEM DEATH hat nach “Panopticism II” und “Deleterious” mit “Two Minutes Hate” einen dritten Track ihres kommenden Albums “The Malady” veröffentlicht. Es ist das vierte Album der Band, die aus dem Solo-Projekt von Void zu einem Trio angewachsen ist.

Außerdem haben ELUVEITIE einen Neuzugang an der Violine verkündet: Lea-Sophie Fischer (ex-RUSSKAJA) ist ab sofort festes Bandmitglied, nachdem sie der Formation bereits in den vergangenen Monaten als Tour-Musikerin zur Seite gestanden hatte. Sie ersetzt Nicole Ansperger, welche sich aus persönlichen Gründen zurückgezogen hatte.

Every day you make my head cave in 
Sexism in the music industry is a tenacious specter, lingering like an unwelcome earworm. Women, it seems, are accorded the same value as a kazoo in a symphony orchestra—more ornamental than instrumental. Their talents, often overshadowed by superficial appraisals, are subjected to a kind of aestheticism that undervalues their true worth. This gender bias resonates louder than a tambourine at an incongruous tea party, creating a cacophony of unequal pay and skewed promotion paths.

Despite the strides made by movements like #MeToo, the music industry remains a landscape requiring thorough recalibration. The systemic issues run deep, entrenched in the bedrock of an industry that often celebrates male prowess while relegating women to the margins. Recognition, it seems, is as elusive as a well-hidden note in a complex chord progression.

To truly transform this domain into an inclusive realm where talent is the sole criterion for advancement, we need more than mere advocacy; we require a profound shift in the industry’s foundational attitudes and practices. Until such a metamorphosis occurs, we will persist in our demands, forever asking for that elusive encore, hoping the next act will bring the harmony we seek.

Enter Toronto industrial siren OLGA, who sees little difference between the music industry and the sex industry, and is unleashing the demons with Sexorcism. This novel enlightenment lampoons that old chestnut, “sex sells,” with her lo-fi video emulating something clandestine you’d find under a bed in 1988. Streaming music – streaming pornography, it’s all the same to her. Someone’s selling off something, usually a soul.

The song is off her debut LP I Am Porn, a not-so-subtle jab at the state of the music industry and reclaiming one’s autonomy through the power of a PVC suit. Reflecting both the desperation of our times and the sheer grit needed to survive them, OLGA’s lyrics are bold, angry, and cheeky—with a hint of sass. With dark, industrial, electronic beats, her songs stick close to pop’s anatomy while adding a twist of rebellion. It’s as if she’s saying, “Sex sells? Fine, but I’m pocketing the profits.” Her music serves as both a mirror and a sledgehammer to the industry’s foibles.

The video for Sexorcism was directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick and filmed at Montréal’s premier adult theatre, Cinéma L’Amour.



Tonight, Toronto’s Baby G will host the record release show, promising an evening that’s sure to be as audacious as OLGA herself. With her biting lyrics and industrial beats, the event is bound to be a heady mix of grit and glamour, perfect for those who like their music with a side of irreverence.

Wie heißt es so schön? „Nur unter Druck entstehen Diamanten“? Wenn INSECT ARK ihr viertes Album „Raw Blood Singing“ mit „Birth Of A Black Diamond“ einschwingen, dann findet sich die Gravitas der Musik aber an anderer Stelle. Statt mit zermalmenden Riffs in Zeitlupe, eruptivem Drumming und primitiver Heaviness agiert das Duo anders als andere Doom-Sludge-Bands. Treffend ausgedrückt hat es Bandcamp-Userin Alice M., die zum 2020er Album „The Vanishing“ schrieb: „Strangely heavy and aerial at the same time; this is an impossible record.“ Ich bin ein bisschen neidisch, dass mir eine so gute Zeile nicht selbst eingefallen ist. Und überhaupt, was für „The Vanishing“ galt, gilt auch für „Raw Blood Singing“.

INSECT ARK vereinen Gegensätze: „Raw Blood Singing“ besitzt eine Gravitas, ohne plakativ auf primitiver Heaviness herumzureiten.
Wie kann es eine Band schaffen, die Gegensätze „heavy“ und „aerial“ zu vereinen? Frontfrau Dana Schechter agiert außerhalb der Standards der Metal-Szene, ergo sind INSECT ARK eher Doomgaze statt Metal. Schechters Vergangenheit, mit ihrer leider unterbewerteten, ehemaligen Band BEE AND FLOWER ist durchaus noch spürbar in INSECT ARK. 2024 sogar mehr denn je, denn „Raw Blood Singing“ ist das erste Album der Band mit Dana Schechters rauchig-verruchtem Gesang. Das lässt „Raw Blood Singing“ gleichzeitig nahbarer, aber auch gefährlicher als seine drei Vorgängeralben klingen.

Breitwandig instrumentiert, ist „Raw Blood Singing“ ein Album, das sich langsam, nach und nach steigert, und seine Details eher zögerlich preisgibt. INSECT ARK legen ein Panorama wie EARTH an, sind so surreal wie MAMIFFER, so dunkel wie FVNERALS und doch so catchy wie eben BEE AND FLOWER. Ob es nun am neuen Drummer Tim Wyskida (KHANATE), der neuen Umgebung – die Band zog von New York City nach Berlin – oder einer neuen Art des Songwritings liegt, seit dahin gestellt. INSECT ARK brauchen keine brutalen, tiefgestimmten Riffs, sie illustrieren ihre Songs mit pulsierendem Bass, mit dem einmaligen Klang der Lap Steel-Gitarre, erzeugen mit Synthesizern eine Atmosphäre wie aus einem finsteren Märchen – und modellieren daraus Songs, die einer Reise durch labyrinthisch-karge Albtraumgebirge ähneln. Apropos: Passender kann ein Albumcover kaum sein.

Dana Schechter singt wieder: „Raw Blood Singing“ profitiert von der sinnlich-rauchigen Stimme der INSECT ARK-Leaderin.
Tim Wyskidas verspieltes Drumming, das etwas mehr Drive hat, also sein Beitrag zu KHANATE, steht INSECT ARK ausgezeichnet. Dieses Fundament nutzt Dana Schechter, um die pulsierenden Basslinien, die düsteren Melodien und ihren gefährlichen Gesang daraufzulegen. Durch die zahlreichen Schichten besitzt „Raw Blood Singing“ eine überraschende Klangtiefe, ohne dass unnötiger Ballast dabei ist. Und genau das ist es, was die Musik einerseits heavy, andererseits so ätherisch klingen lässt. Sogar die Gastbeiträge von Ville Leppilahti (ORANSSI PAZUZU) und Colin Marston (KRALLICE), die Piano und Synthesizer beisteuern, erweitern das Klangbild subtil und alles andere als aufdringlich.

Wirklich schnell will „Raw Blood Singing“, ebenso wie das frühere Material von INSECT ARK, nicht ins Ohr gehen. Die acht Stücke liegen meist abseits von klassischen Songstrukturen, sie haben kaum griffigen Refrains und fühlen sich deshalb beinahe improvisiert an. INSECT ARK erzeugen gerade daraus große Faszination, wie „Psychological Jackal“, als auch die spannend arrangierten Instrumentals „Cleaven Hearted“ und „Inverted Whirlpool“ beweisen. Nahbarer ist das Duo bei „The Frozen Lake“, das die Hörer*innen förmlich einsaugt, nicht zuletzt dank Schechters akzentuierter Gesangsperformance. „Youth Body Swayed“ geht noch weiter, das verruchte Stück ist sehr noir, dank Piano und Gesang und das eingängigste Stück des Albums. „The Hands“ ist durch die Synthesizer auf der einen Seite psychedelischer, gleichzeitig aber auch recht zugänglich – auch durch die kompakte Länge von nur vier Minuten.

Mal noir, mal psychedelisch: INSECT ARK verführen ihr Publikum auf „Raw Blood Singing“ mit vielen Facetten.
Wie wunderbar und wandelbar Dana Schechter ist, beweist sie vor allem mit INSECT ARK. Als Instrumentalistin bei SWANS, ANGELS OF LIGHT und WREKMEISTER HARMONIES leistete und leistet sie den jeweiligen Bands große Dienste, ihre wahren Talente bringt sie aber an anderer Stelle zur Geltung: „Raw Blood Singing“ ist ein dunkles, atmosphärisch wie komplexes Werk, das sich nicht leicht greifen lässt, aber bei eingehender Beschäftigung mit vielen Facetten und Details begeistert – eben ein dunkler Diamant von einem Album. Zusammen mit ihrem neuen Drummer Tim Wyskida und ihrer wiedergewonnenen Freude am Gesang, erschafft Dana Schechter mit „Raw Blood Singing“ ihr bisher bestes Album unter dem Banner INSECT ARK. Wer doomigen Sound abseits vom Metal, wer Sludge ohne plakative Heaviness und wer psychedelische Musik ohne Klischees mag oder generell zu den abenteuerlustigen Hörer*innen zählt, sollte sich „Raw Blood Singing“ nun wirklich nicht entgehen lassen.

Das ROCKHARZ OPEN AIR geht in eine neue Runde: Stattfinden wird die kommende Auflage des Festivals vom 3. bis 6. Juli 2023 in Ballenstedt. Jetzt haben die Veranstalter die Running Order des Open Airs veröffentlicht – die kompletten Spielpläne haben wir weiter unten zusammengefasst – Update 02.07.2024: DEFECTS mussten ihre Teilnahme absagen, als Ersatz spielen SURGICAL STRIKE.

Mittlerweile ist das Festival bereits ausverkauft. Für den Vorverkauf hatten die Veranstalter ursprünglich einen 14-tägigen Zeitraum für Frühbucher:innen einberaumt, wobei die ersten sieben Tage ausschließlich für Bestandskunden des festivaleigenen Shops reserviert waren. Mit einer dritten Bandwelle enthüllt das ROCKHARZ-Team nun einen weiteren Headliner: BRUCE DICKINSON wird sein neues Album “The Mandrake Project” live vorstellen – es wird die einzige Festival-Show des IRON MAIDEN-Frontmanns auf deutschem Boden sein. Ebenfalls neu im Line-up sind AMARANTHE, CALLEJON, BENEDICTION sowie KANONENFIEBER.

Zuvor haben die Organisatoren vor dem Start des freien Vorverkaufs (ab 17. Juli 2023, 17:00 Uhr) drei weitere Acts enthüllt: 2024 mit dabei sind AMORPHIS, OOMPH! sowie THE HALO EFFECT.

Die Heavy / Doom Metal-Band KING ZOG hat mit “Second Dawn” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “King Zog” (2017) das zweite Album der Australier aus Perth. Produziert wurde das Album von Derek Mattin. Release-Termin ist der 31. Juli 2024 via Rue Morgue Records.

Die schwedischen Powermetaller DAMPF werden ihr zweites Album „No Angels Alive“ am 23. August über Silver Lining Music veröffentlichen.Nun wurde das Video zur ersten Single “Masquerade” veröffentlicht.

Martin Erikson zur Story des Songs: “Das Lied erforscht den dunklen Geist und die Seele von Jacob Johan Anckarström, einem verärgerten schwedischen Militäroffizier, dessen Wut und Unzufriedenheit mit dem schwedischen König Gustav III. ihn dazu brachte, auf einem Maskenball einen Königsmordversuch anzustreben, bevor er ihn am 16. März 1792 an der Königlichen Oper Stockholm ermordete.  Dies geschah vor 300 Jahren, aber die ‘bösen Augen’ schmieden auch in der heutigen Zeit noch Pläne: Bei der heutigen ‘Maskerade’ geht es darum, die Menschen im Dunkeln zu halten, ihnen Brot und Wasser zu geben und sie mit dem, was sie an der Oberfläche sehen, glücklich zu machen, was natürlich nur die Dunkelheit außer Sichtweite und im Schatten gedeihen lässt.”

Sänger Erikson sagt: “In DAMPF können wir uns mit allen möglichen Geschichten beschäftigen: dem Dunklen, dem Seltsamen, dem Unheimlichen… die verrotteten Teile des Waldes und der Natur oder seltsame Götter oder seltsame Menschen oder kleine Menschen, die unter dem Moos leben. Wir haben diese Band auch gegründet, damit wir es uns erlauben können, an all diese Orte zu gehen, für die man nicht bestimmt ist. Es ist so befreiend, eine Band zu haben, bei der man sagen kann: ‘Ja, lass uns das machen’, ohne sich auch nur im entferntesten Gedanken darüber zu machen, ob es ‘passt’ oder nicht.”

Nach 8 Jahren gibt es ein neues Lebenzeichen aus dem Baltikum. Das Neofolk-Projekt Romowe Rikoito aus Litauen legt sein 6. Album vor und bleibt seinem Motto treu, das Kulturgut der Prussen – deren ursprüngliches Siedlungsgebiet im Baltikum sowie in Ost- und Westpreußen lag und deren Name auch für das spätere Preußen herhalten musste – in Sprache, Text und Ton aufleben zu lassen. So ist es schwer an dieser Stelle zu schreiben, was genau in den Texten der einzelnen Lieder steht. Immerhin finden sich auf dem Platteninlay kurze Anmerkungen auf Englisch und man ist so freundlich in den Credits auch einen Link zu einem Wörterbuch der Baltisch Prussischen Sprache anzugeben. So wird ersichtlich, dass sich in den 8 Liedern der Lauf des Jahresrades manifestiert, beginnend mit dem Julfest hin zu den Tagundnachtgleichen und Sonnenwenden. Dazu gesellen sich Träume, Rätsel und Orte, die sich mit den alten Göttern verbinden lassen.

Der Albumtitel beruft sich auf den obersten der Baltischen Götter, Ukapirms. Der geneigte Hörer trifft hier also auf nicht untypische Inhalte für Neofolk-Abende. Musikalisch erklingen aber keine martialischen oder schwermütigen Klänge, wie man sie von vielen anderen Gruppierungen und Projekten des Genres kennt. Die Lieder kommen in einem klassisch folkigen, beschwingt tanzbaren Gewand daher. Flöten, Trommeln, Akustikgitarren sind allgegenwärtig aber auch Keyboards und einige Soundeffekte gesellen sich dazu, wenn Glabbis (männlich) und AlwÄ�rmija (weiblich) ihre Gesangsduette erklingen lassen. Letztendlich kann man sich die 4 Musiker auch gut auf den Bühnen heidnischer Feste oder Mittelaltermärkte vorstellen, in letztem Fall aber ohne die typischen Dudelsäcke oder Leiern.

Romowe Rikoito gehen beständig den Pfad weiter, den sie Mitte der 1990er betreten haben. Auch wenn die Wegbegleiter von Glabbis Niktorius nicht mehr die gleichen sind, hat die Musik dieses Projekts von Album zu Album stetig Fassetten zugelegt und an Qualität gewonnen. Auf UKA werden noch leicht elektronische Klänge eingestreut, die aber der Signatur des Baltisch Prussischen (Neo)Folks in keinster Weise schaden zufügen. (MK)

Zuvor gab es bereits ein Musikvideo zur Single “Hail To The King” bei YouTube. Es ist die 13. Studioplatte der Schweden, die sich aber nicht auf ihren Lorbeeren ausruhen wollen, wie Frontmann Joacim Can erläutert:

“Dies ist unser 13. Album. Wie kann man nach 13 Alben immer noch relevant bleiben? Es ist so ähnlich wie die erste Zeile des Songs ‘Avenge The Fallen’: ‘Was ist schlimmer, derjenige zu sein, der gestorben ist, oder derjenige, der überlebt hat?’ Denkt darüber nach, denn es ist eine schwierige Frage.

Wollen wir eine Band sein, die neue Musik nur deshalb veröffentlicht, um wieder auf Tour zu gehen, oder wollen wir uns weiter anstrengen und herausfordern? In Zeiten, in denen die Leute immer weniger Aufmerksamkeitsspanne haben, denken wir immer noch in Form von kompletten Alben. Ein paar gute Songs machen noch kein starkes Album. Ein starkes Album entsteht durch ein Album voller großartiger Songs und das ist es, was wir mit Avenge The Fallen abliefern.”

Die französische Black Metal-Band CELESTE geht 2024 auf Headline-Tour durch Europa und will dabei auch ihre aktuelle EP “Epilogue(s)” (2023) live vorstellen. Konzerte spielt die Formation im Juni, Oktober sowie November und macht dabei u.a. Station in Hannover, Essen, Wiesbaden, Berlin, Leipzig, sowie Neunkirchen.

Die Power Metal-Band EVERGREY präsentiert ihr neues Album “Theories Of Emptiness” mit einer weiteren Video-Single und hat ein Video zu “Cold Dreams” bei YouTube geteilt. Zu hören sind hier auch KATATONIA-Frontmann Jonas Renkse und Englunds Tochter Salina.

Im Mai teilte die Gruppe überdies einen Clip zu “Say” bei YouTube. Schon im April stellten die Schweden mit einem Video zu “Falling From The Sun” den ersten Song ihres kommenden Albums vor.

Produziert wurde die 14. Studioplatte von Tom S. Englund und Jonas Ekdahl, den Mix übernahm Adam “Nolly” Getgood. Für das Mastering schließlich zeichnet Thomas “Plec” Johansson verantwortlich. Die musikalische Vision erklärt Mastermind Tom S. Englund:

“Für uns ist Fortschritt das A und O. Wir sind bestrebt, dass unsere Musik innovativ bleibt und nicht stagniert. Mit jedem Album streben wir danach, etwas Neues einzuführen – einen einzigartigen Charakter, eine andere Tonart oder einen anderen Akkord, neue Stimmen in unseren Kompositionen oder innovative Produktionstechniken.”

Los Angeles, a city buzzing with electric energy and untold tales, plays host to the enigmatic alternative rock artist, Taleen Kali. Known among Southern California’s music aficionados for her work with the “flower punk” band TÜLIPS, Kali weaves melodies that glimmer like stardust in the twilight sky yet possess the audacity of a neon sign flickering defiantly through the fog-laden veil of night. Her compositions intricately interlace the stories of her Armenian heritage, with nods to her Lebanese and Ethiopian roots, creating a harmonious blend that marries the ancient rhythms of her lineage with the rebellious beats of modern subcultures.

Now, she announces a new offering to her fans ahead of her headline appearance at Dum Dum Fest on June 22 and an upcoming support tour with Ringo Deathstarr: a cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Ava Adore” from their 1998 album Adore.

The song’s dark, seductive lyrics paired with an electronic twist marked a departure from Smashing Pumpkins’ grungy roots. Billy Corgan’s haunting vocals and atmospheric production created a gothic romance with a hint of melancholy; a love letter written in shadows, wrapped in a cloak of moody brilliance.

Beyond her musical endeavors, Kali emerges as the driving force behind the avant-garde Dum Dum Records and the esteemed DUM DUM Zine, platforms that transcend the mere production of music and literature. Kali delves into the realm of the mystical, embracing her role as a sound healer. Through her guided group meditations, she offers a sanctuary for the soul, a space where the frenetic energy of the city gives way to serene introspection. In 2021, she briefly veered from her established path of psychedelic punk to explore the tranquil waters of sound healing with her album Songs For Meditation, serving as a bridge between the worlds of sonic rebellion and meditative harmony.

2023 marked a significant feather in this accomplished polymath’s cap with the release of her first full-length album, Flower Of Life, via Dum Dum Records. Noteworthy names like The Smashing Pumpkins’ Jeff Schroeder and Josiah Mazzaschi added their magic at The Cave Studio to this pièce de résistance.

Die Doom Metal / Stoner Rock-Band RIFFLORD hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Serpent Power” mit “Ohm Ripper” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “39 Serpent Power” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “26 Mean and Heavy” (2010) und “7 Cremation Ground / Meditation” (2018) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus South Dakota. Der Titel und ein Stück weit auch die Ausrichtung eines Album ergeben sich im Übrigen dadurch, dass die Band blind eine Karte aus dem Tarotdeck Secret Dakini Oracle zieht.

“39 Serpent Power” wurde noch vor Covid-19 geschrieben und aufgenommen und dann wie eine Zeitkapsel bis 2024 vergraben, um am 21. Juni 2024 via Ripple Music veröffentlicht zu werden.

Imagine a love once bright and burning, now flickering like a candle in a drafty room. It’s a poignant pain, whispering of past sweetness and present bitterness. Laughter echoes hollowly; tender touches feel like fleeting memories and effortless conversations are dammed by unspoken words.SShared dreams fray, each thread taut with doubt. The closeness cherished becomes a chasm. Like a garden wilting under the sun, love’s joy turns to sorrow, reminding us even deep bonds strain. Urban Heat’s heart-wrenching new single, Say The Words, tackles this heartbreak. The song is the latest offering from their forthcoming album, The Tower, set for worldwide release on August 16th via Artoffact Records.

In a mere five years, Urban Heat has blazed a trail across the darkwave scene. Leading the charge is Jonathan Horstmann, a singer and multi-instrumentalist whose melodic baritone could charm the socks off a snake, alongside the thunderous rhythm section provided by Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley.

Horstmann describes the single – and The Tower as a whole – as deeply personal, tackling themes of fatherhood, sobriety, relationships, and the chaotic state of the world. His melodic musings weave through these topics with wit and wisdom, offering a heartfelt glimpse into his life and the band’s ever-evolving journey.

“I was walking into a coffee shop one morning, and the chorus just popped into my head,” recalls Horstmann. “I’m always thankful when songs come like that. It was just WHAM! Then I had to make sense of what it meant and write verses. The bridge  was particularly hard to write. Not in the sense of finding the words, but struggling with the emotional implications as my wife and I were beginning to have our struggles. We’ve since separated and returning to that song and many others on the record can be quite hard for me.”

The Tower by Urban Heat

Last year, Urban Heat turned up the temperature to a toasty broil for throngs at Cruel World and Darker Waves. Back on home ground, they’ve become the darlings of SXSW, causing quite a commotion on TikTok. They headlined at The Roxy in LA and even strutted their stuff on the illustrious stages of the Austin City Limits Festival. With a knack for causing a sizzling sensation wherever they go, Urban Heat has shown they can make waves and warm hearts all at once, blending a charming concoction of charisma and cool that leaves audiences both bewitched and bemused.

“This record is the first fully complete artistic and emotional statement from this band, and we’re thrilled and anxious about releasing it to the world,” Horstmann continues, speaking on the forthcoming album. “The Tower is all of my fears, anxieties, and insecurities made manifest, and it will be so healing to exercise these internal demons alongside the amazing community that has formed around this project.”

Die Alternative / Noise Rock-Band DEATH BY GONG hat mit “Descalator” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist der erste Release des deutschen Trios, welches aus Bassist Chris Breuer (HEADS., ZAHN), Sänger und Gitarrist Jobst M. Feit (RADARE) sowie Drummer Peter Voigtmann (SHRVL, HEADS., THE OCEAN) besteht. Gemixt und gemastert wurden das Album von Joe Joaquin bei Custom Mojo MK III in Ulm. Release-Termin ist der 20. September 2024.

Vorab gab es schon die beiden Tracks “Distant” und “In Despair” zu hören, welche nicht Teil des Albums sind, aber als Bonus 7″ zum Vinyl-Bundle gehören.

Wow, what a brilliant concert evening. There had been a lot of rain in the region all week and the weather forecast for the weekend was not very good either. There were a few thunderstorm warnings. Many guests had prepared for this and turned up with rain gear. But we were lucky and there was no rain and no thunderstorms.

Ein neues Live-Album haben HEILUNG aufgenommen: “LIFA Iotungard” entstand im Oktober 2021 während ihrer Show im Red Rocks Amphiteatre (Colorado) und umfasst inklusive Intro insgesamt elf Stücke. Mit “Traust” kann man sich eines davon vorab als Clip bei YouTube ansehen.

Los Angeles-based alternative rock collective Beauty In Chaos presents their latest track, Diving For Pearls, featuring the legendary Wayne Hussey of The Mission and the enchanting vocals of his wife, Cinthya Hussey, partners in Archeometre.

This marks the first taste of the upcoming album from the ever-evolving ensemble that is Beauty In Chaos, conjured into being by guitar virtuoso Michael Ciravolo in 2018. The album, titled Dancing With Angels, is set to flutter its way into the world on July 24. Ciravolo, the band’s leader and curator, describes the new track as “a torrid earworm with lots of swirling layers,” promising a playful plunge into musical delight.

This is the fourth song Wayne Hussey has fronted with Beauty In Chaos, one that Ciravolo feels “may just be the best we’ve written together,” despite Hussey’s bout with writer’s block.

“When Michael first sent me the music track, I was on tour with The Mission,” Hussey recalls. “I had a few listens and thought, yes, this is good, I can find something to sing to this easy enough. And then nothing. For months, I’d listen, and I would come up with melodies aplenty, but no words. More time passed and Michael would ask how I was getting on and each time I’d reply, “I’ve got vocal melodies but no lyrics, absolutely nothing is coming”. I must confess that I was getting worried that I’d never be able to write another song – ever…I was raking over all my old lyric notebooks and various word documents on old hard drives and still nada….I was bemoaning my situation to Cinthya one evening and she suggested I write about a personal situation I’d found myself in a few years back. I got my mind focused in the right direction, and while in the studio singing along to the track, I soon got the first line, with the rest following fairly easily…and quickly. It was a huge relief to have the elusive muse visit me again. I played it to Cin and she suggested a couple of small changes and voila, here you have it! I won’t explain what or who the song is about, there’s no need for that, I’ll just leave the listener to make up their own mind, and take from it what they will.”

Ciravolo scoffs affectionately at Hussey’s verbose recollection: “I think he has told me that every time I have sent him music! He cries wolf of ‘no words’, yet he proceeds to one-up our preceding song … which was damn good in my slightly biased opinion. The man is a genuine poet!”

“When I first heard the instrumental track for this song I immediately fell in love with Michael’s guitars,” says Cinthya Hussey.  “It’s the kind of song that embraces you… and I could listen to it all day long.  Wayne was a bit stuck for ideas so I threw an idea at him that was relevant and would be good to get out of his system… And off he went… majestically so!  This is probably one of my favourite Beauty In Chaos songs!”

“Diving for Pearls” glimmers as an iridescent alternative rock ode to lost love. The bittersweet vocal harmonies of Wayne and Cynthia Hussey, combined with Michael Ciravolo’s heartfelt guitar riff, evoke emotions pulled from the depths of the heart.

The song’s mesmerizing video showcases a brilliantly psychedelic performance, expertly crafted and directed by the visionary Vicente Cordero of Industrialism Films. This visual siren’s call enchants and enthralls, offering a kaleidoscopic spectacle that dances and dazzles the senses, evoking the feeling of being shot on the ocean floor.

This ‘single version’ was skillfully mixed by the illustrious Tim Palmer, whose alchemical touch has graced the works of The Cure, U2, David Bowie, Robert Plant, HIM, and The Mission, among many other luminaries. “I have been fortunate once again to mix Beauty In Chaos’ latest offering and it’s a beauty! But beware, you can’t just hear it once as it will stay with you all day,” says Palmer. With a twinkle of mischief and melody, his words perfectly capture the enchanting essence of the track.

About the new album Dancing With Angels, Ciravolo divulges that several BIC alumni will return, along with some new members of the growing ‘BIC Family, while offering an open-ended description of the new album.
