Richard Dadd, the enigmatic English painter born in 1817 in Chatham, Kent, swiftly emerged as a prodigious talent during the Victorian era, celebrated for his evocative depictions of fairies and other supernatural subjects. His early promise led him to the esteemed Royal Academy of Arts, where he mesmerized audiences with his intricate, imaginative works that brought ethereal realms and meticulously detailed Eastern studies to vivid life. These Eastern studies were profoundly influenced by a transformative journey to the Middle East in 1842, which imbued his work with a newfound depth and complexity.

However, Dadd’s brilliant trajectory was abruptly darkened upon his return. Plagued by what contemporary scholars now recognize as paranoid schizophrenia, he tragically succumbed to delusions, culminating in the murder of his father in 1843—a crime he believed was divinely ordained. This harrowing act condemned him to spend the remainder of his life within the austere confines of Bethlem and Broadmoor Asylums.

Yet, even in captivity, Dadd’s artistic spirit remained undiminished. His confinement became a crucible for creativity, producing masterpieces such as The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke. These works, characterized by their painstaking detail and boundless imagination, stand as testaments to Dadd’s unique vision, demonstrating that his genius could shine through even the darkest shadows.

This tale of Dadd’s fragile genius and tragic madness is echoed in Sad Surfer, the first new single in nearly three decades from The Wolfgang Press. This track, from their forthcoming album A 2nd Shape, set for release on 27 September 2024 via Downwards Records, is a testament to the band’s enduring charm. Sad Surfer is an unassuming gem, driven by the steady pulse of a vintage rhythm box and the rolling waves of tremolo chords, evoking the imagery of waves lapping at a desolate shore. Michael Allen’s voice, oscillating between a hushed baritone and a mournful wail, imbues the song with a haunting quality, firmly anchoring it within the distinctive soundscape of The Wolfgang Press.

Emerging from the labyrinthine layers of London’s underground in the early ’80s, the original triad of Michael Allen, Mark Cox, and Andrew Gray carved a distinctive niche with their haunting, avant-garde soundscapes and infectious rhythms. Their music, a fusion of brooding post-punk with pulsating dance grooves, captured the zeitgeist of a generation seeking both solace and movement. These new recordings, steeped in the ethos of the post-punk era, resonate with a renewed vigor and vitality. Allen’s bass lines, as prominent as they were in their nascent days, anchor the tracks with a robust foundation, while the band’s moodier undertones evoke the atmospheric intensity of their early work. The result is a compelling blend of past and present, forging a powerful connection between their roots and their evolution.

The upcoming album features core members Michael Allen and Andrew Gray, joined by Stephen Gray, Andrew’s brother. A 2nd Shape finds the trio less concerned with anything approaching funky, opting instead for a brooding yet vital set of tracks, reintroducing a reinvigorated band.

“This album arrived naturally and organically,” says the band. “The tracks came about from a measured process, and we feel A 2nd Shape is timely and essential. We also feel Downwards Records has fitted in perfectly with this process, their enthusiasm for this project has been tangible and encouraging…For this project we wanted the record to be made without the use of computers. It was important for us that the tracks were recorded on tape and played live as a band, with very little tampering/overdubbing. We purposely limited ourselves in the number of tracks we could record by using an old ADAT 8-track machine and the result of how well this worked surprised us all.”

A 2nd Shape will be released on Downwards Records on September 27th, 2024. The Wolfgang Press will also be making an appearance at Poland’s Soundedit Festival in October.

Als Titel mag „Avenge The Fallen“ zunächst martialisch anmuten, eigentlich gehe es aber um Freiheit, wie Sänger Joacim Cans erklärt. Der Vorteil solch allgemeiner Konzepte liegt auf der Hand: Aus der Zeit fallen kann man damit kaum, selbst wenn HAMMERFALL nunmehr ihr 13. Studiowerk vorlegen. Diese Erfahrung ist folglich ein zentraler Baustein der Platte: Gänzlich neue Wege oder Unerwartetes erwartet uns im Laufe der 47 Minuten nicht. Doch bloßer Sklave der Routine will das Quintett ebenso wenig sein.

Transparent und kraftvoll produziert lassen sich Stücke wie der stampfende Titeltrack oder das energische „The End Justifies“ die drei Dekaden Bandgeschichte nicht anmerken. Von Lustlosigkeit oder Apathie keine Spur, zeigt sich auch Fronter Cans von seiner besten Seite, wenn er in der streichergestützten Ballade „Hope Springs Eternal“ emotionale Töne anschlägt oder in „Freedom“ oder „Burn It Down“ immer noch eine ganze Menge Power in die Stimme legt.

HAMMERFALL bewegen sich nie weit weg von ihren Trademarks
Weit weg von ihren Trademarks bewegen sich HAMMERFALL dennoch nie: Die charakteristischen Chöre liegen meist nur ein paar Takte entfernt und auch die Riffarbeit des Duos Dronjak/Norgren, das in bewährter Weise den Spagat zwischen Power und klassischem Heavy Metal schlägt, bildet weiterhin das Rückgrat des offenbar unverwüstlichen Bandsounds.

Dass der eigentlich leicht kitschige Ansatz von Stücken wie „Hail To The King“ im Vergleich zu aktuellen Genre-Kollegen wie WARKINGS oder auch HAMMER KING fast schon geerdet wirkt, verleiht „Avenge The Fallen“ im Jahr 2024 sogar eine weitere Qualität. Plötzlich verkörpern die Skandinavier die eher konservative Seite des Genres, ohne selbst große Zugeständnisse machen zu müssen. Kraftvolle Power-Metal-Hymnen à la „Hero To All“ durchziehen weiterhin klare Melodielinien und eingängige Refrains, wobei natürlich stets auch Platz für ein wohlplatziertes wie kurzweiliges Solo bleibt.

Auf “Avenge The Fallen” ziehen HAMMERFALL weiterhin ihr Ding durch
Dick aufgetragen wird ab und an selbstverständlich dennoch, indem etwa „Capture The Dream“ reitende Gitarren mit einem erhebenden Refrain verbindet, den man hassen darf, oder aber gerade wegen seines überbordenden Kitschs ins Herz schließen kann. Im Endeffekt bleiben sich HAMMERFALL auch hier schlichtweg treu – und wer das verkennt, den hat der martialische Albumtitel möglicherweise in die Irre geführt: „Leben und leben lassen“, lautet das Motto der Schweden, die auf „Avenge The Fallen“ in bewährter und durchaus abwechslungsreicher Weise weiterhin ihr Ding durchziehen.

Das Stoner-Doom-Duo Year Of The Cobra - Amy Tung (Bass/Gesang) und Jon Barrysmith (Schlagzeug) - aus Seattle wird sich mit seinem zweiten Album "Ash And Dust" endgültig als eine der wichtigsten Bands des Genres etablieren, auch weil sich die beiden mit Psychedelic- und Post-Punk-Einflüssen finsterer und vielfältiger als zuvor präsentieren.

Mittlerweile haben Year Of The Cobra ihre eigene Nische gefunden, in der Lava-Riffs und tonnenschwere Grooves mit einer gleißend anmutigen Stimme und bemerkenswert poppigen Hooks verschmelzen. Inmitten der erdrückenden Heaviness offenbart "Ash And Dust" somit auch Augenblicke leichtfüßiger, engelsgleicher Schönheit. Dank einer überlebensgroßen Produktion des legendären Tontechnikers Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Bruce Dickinson) wird das Album zu einem Klangerlebnis, das zum Tanz in einen flammenden Abgrund einlädt.

Mit Nam-Khar und Vortex legen zwei profilierte deutsche Musikprojekte des Dark Ambient und Ritual eine sehr hörenswerte Kollaboration vor. Beide Projekte haben bereits in der Vergangenheit ihre Vorliebe für Konzeptalben unter Beweis gestellt (Vortex u.a. mit der Vertonung von Stummfilmen), so dass diese Zusammenkunft lediglich eine Frage der Zeit war.

Mit „The Sarajevo Spiral“ bezieht man Stellung zum gegenwärtigen Zeitgeist. Historiker und Politiker weisen vermehrt darauf hin, dass wir uns im Übergang von der Nachkriegszeit in eine Vorkriegszeit befinden. Das Aufflammen kriegerischer Konflikte in Europa und im Nahen Osten, lassen einen Großbrand wahrscheinlicher werden. Diese Stimmung greift das vorliegende Album auf und führt seine Hörer zum Vorabend des 1. Weltkriegs zurück. Die martialen und gleichzeitig meditativen Klänge erscheinen im Kleid von 11 komplexen Kompositionen, die die Zeit zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eindringlich wiederspiegleln. Nam-Khar und Vortex richten ihre musikalischen Reflektionen dabei auf die These aus, dass wir uns am Abschluss des gleichen Kreises jener Zeit befinden, nur eben ein Jahrhundert später.

Der Einstieg erfolgt über Siegmund Freuds Schrift „Zeitgemäßes über Krieg und Tod“. Im Stück Para Bellum zitiert Christian Fuchs (Fetish 69, Black Palms Orchestra) u.a. daraus: „Wenn Du den Frieden erhalten willst, so rüste zum Kriege! (…) Wenn du das Leben aushalten willst, richte dich auf den Tod ein!“ (Para Mortem). Sehr deutlich zeigt sich hier schon der Blick in den Abgrund (auch den der menschlichen Psyche). Es folgt das Titelstück, welches sich des Attentats von Sarajevo als spiralen Auslöser des 1. Weltkriegs widmet. Das langsame Ablaufen der Zeit des Friedens ertönt Schlag um Schlag, untermauert mit bedrohlich aus dem Hintergrund anschwellender düsterer Gitarren, die von Oliver Freund (MARS, Vinur) beigesteuert werden. Es schließt sich die Mobilmachung an. Gerade weil die Schüsse auf den Thronfolger und seine Frau nicht zu hören sind, die Soundkulisse aber beibehalten wird, scheint es als hätte das Attentat nichts verändert. Nur der einsetzende militärische Trommelrhythmus signalisiert den Aufbruch in den Krieg. Dieser nahtlose Übergang der beiden Stücke ist ein gut gesetztes Symbol dafür, dass es damals lediglich nur einer kleinen Nuance bedurfte, um endlich das Kanonenfutter auf den Weg zu bringen, welches am Ende des Stückes noch jubelnd zu hören ist.

Jedes Stück auf diesem Album steht stellvertretend für die Schritte, die weiter auf der Spirale in die Katastrophe hinein gegangen wurden. Hier sind u.a. zu nennen das Expansionsstreben der Monarchen, die Dynamisierungen der Aggressionen, das Waffenschmieden (Hammer And Anvil) und schlussendlich die Untermauerung, dass ein und dieselbe Form (des Tötens, Lügens, Kämpfens?) vervielfacht auftreten kann (Materia prima).

Die Musiker bleiben ihrer Verwendung ritualer rein instrumentaler Klänge treu. Diese werden durch martialische Elemente angereichert, die jedoch nicht in eine dominante Rolle gelangen. Das unterscheidet diese Platte deutlich von kriegsträumerischen Alben wie sie bspw. Puissance seinerzeit bei Cold Meat Industries veröffentlichten. Das Album ist in einer streng auf 300 Stück limitierten Auflage auf CD erschienen und beim Label direkt schon vergriffen. Ich hoffe noch auf eine Veröffentlichung als LP, damit das wieder wundervoll von Nadine en Noir gestaltete Artwork – wie auch beim Vortex-Vorgänger „Häxan“ – richtig zur Geltung kommen kann. Aber bei einer Länge von 63 Minuten, wäre dann wohl eine Doppel-LP von Nöten. Also heißt es erstmal schnell sein beim Kauf. (M.W.)

Paul Gilmartin, longtime drummer for The Danse Society, has passed away. A vital force in the early post-punk and gothic rock realms, Gilmartin’s influence was indelible. Formed in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, in the early ’80s, The Danse Society swiftly attracted a dedicated following with their shadowy, atmospheric sound and somber lyrics. They achieved moderate success during their career.

The band’s original lineup included Steve Rawlings (vocals), Paul Nash (guitar), Lyndon Scarfe (keyboards), Tim Wright (bass guitar), and Paul Gilmartin (drums). After the Heaven Is Waiting album, Scarfe was replaced by David Whitaker (formerly of Music for Pleasure). Gilmartin’s drumming—marked by its robust precision and relentless rhythms—was key in shaping the band’s distinctive style.

The group’s early works, notably the acclaimed album “Heaven Is Waiting,” solidified their place in alternative music. Gilmartin, known for his dynamic performances, contributed significantly to the band’s enduring legacy.

Paul Gilmartin quit a reformed The Danse Society in January 2014, citing creative and personal clashes. He believed the band had strayed from its original spirit. Internal rifts emerged, splitting Gilmartin, Martin, and Dave from new singer Maethelyiah, formerly of Blooding Mask, and Nash. Frustrated by the lack of enjoyment and control issues, Gilmartin decided to leave, aiming to maintain the essence of Danse Society through a new venture, Danse Society Reincarnated. This decision sparked a bitter legal feud with his former colleagues, leading to the band being rebranded as The Society after Gilmartin lost the legal battle in 2017.

Gilmartin’s death was announced on his Facebook, although details are still forthcoming:

Mit “Nascence” wird am 9. August 2024 das neue Album der Progressive Metal-Band THE APHELION erscheinen. Es ist nach “The Labour Division” (2018) das zweite Album der Kanadier aus Ottawa. Das Konzeptalbum erzählt die Geschichte des Abstiegs eines Mannes in den Wahnsinn und seines eigenen Verstandes als Antwort auf die Alltäglichkeit und Wiederholbarkeit der Welt um ihn herum.

“Nascence” wurde von Tony Lindgren gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Alyssa Kusik ausgestattet. Mit “The Seed of Doubt” gibt es nun einen weiteren Track vorab zu hören.

Belarusian post-punk trio Molchat Doma have unveiled their latest single and video for “Belaya Polosa,” the title track from their forthcoming album, set to drop on September 6th via Sacred Bones. Accompanying this release is the announcement of a 2025 North American headline tour, where they will grace some of their largest stages to date.

Following on from singles “Son” and “Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh Kto Ya,” “Belaya Polosa” epitomizes the band’s evolving sonic landscape and the intense personal struggles that have shaped their recent work. The track evokes the dark allure of Depeche Mode’s Violator era, with Egor’s vocal performance striking a perfect balance between brooding melancholy and urgent intensity. The synth-driven textures recall the electronic mastery of Depeche Mode, while the guitar and bass lines are drenched in the atmospheric reverb characteristic of The Cure’s Disintegration. Yet, far from wallowing in despair, the song’s driving tempo suggests a restless forward momentum, a determination to move beyond past sorrows into an uncertain but hopeful future.

“Belaya Polosa” translates to “White Stripe,” a poignant metaphor for a fleeting glimmer of hope amid pervasive darkness. The lyrics delve into the fragile state of the human psyche amidst chaos, capturing the desperate struggle to maintain sanity and the resolve to endure turmoil, albeit temporarily. It speaks to farewells and the heavy weight of accumulated pain and resentment, amplifying the song’s urgency and fragility. Molchat Doma’s signature blend of coldwave and post-punk perfectly encapsulates this existential battle, making “Belaya Polosa” a potent reminder of human vulnerability.

“Written in LA after over a year of living in a new place, the song captures the interplay of past and present,” the band explains. “It reflects the realization that you’re no longer drawn to where you left, yet you don’t completely sever ties. It’s as if life has been paused. The lyrics explore self-understanding across time, the evolution of your social circle, and an outsider’s view of people from a ‘past life’.”

The video for “Belaya Polosa,” directed by Ambar Navarro, combines the evocative aesthetics of early 90s MTV with the cinematic grandeur of Ingmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovsky. The end result is a spellbinding sequence of imagery reminiscent of the influential 1988 music video for Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” and many of Depeche Mode’s videos directed by Anton Corbijn.

In the four years since their last album, Monument, vocalist Egor Shkutko, bassist/synth player Pavel Kozlov, and primary songwriter, producer, and arranger Raman Kamahortsau have undergone significant personal transformations, which are reflected in their new music. “The entire album is a prism through which we tried to reflect what has happened to us,” the band notes. Kamahortsau once again took on production duties, but the sonic landscape of Belaya Polosa is markedly different from their previous works.

Where their earlier albums sounded like third-generation bootlegs of banned Eastern Bloc recordings influenced by Factory Records imports, Belaya Polosa propels them in a new direction while retaining their cold minimalist delivery. The raw, basement grime of their past gives way to a digital sheen and shimmering production values. This album is a testament to change in difficult times, a love letter to the digital pulse of the ‘90s, and a vibrant reinvention of their somber dance-floor anthems.

Die schwedische Alternative Rock / Metalcore-Band PALESKIN hat mit “Love me, slow” eine neue Single veröffentlicht.

“”Love me, slow” ist ein Song darüber, dass man Drogen und Alkohol nimmt, um seine Gefühle zu betäuben, und später merkt, dass man nicht davor weglaufen kann und es einen verzehrt”, erklärt die Band.

Piano and percussion align with a synthesised chorus as this unique voice heard through fingers sings to the soul, sea and sky. “With every album I make, I have always wished it to be my Greatest Work ever. Through this album, The Night Has Rushed In, I believe I have definitely achieved this aim. And I am Continuing in that Work. I have sought in this album, and through this album, to use Divine Audio Frequencies in Instinctive, Mystical, Ways, Connected to All of the Sciences to try and reach a Higher State of Consciousness through Personal Transformation. NACHTMYSTIUM sind zurück! Nach allem, was gesagt wurde und geschehen ist, steht Mastermind Blake Judd wieder mit beiden Beinen fest auf dem Boden. Und nicht nur das: Judd hat sich aus den tiefsten Abgründen seines Lebens herausgekämpft, um als ein an dieser extremen Erfahrung gereifter Künstler und Mensch zur Musik zurückzukehren. Sein Erscheinen wird nicht überall auf Beifall stoßen – auch nicht in der Black Metal Szene, die ihm herausragende Alben verdankt. Wer die turbulente Karriere von Blake Judd und seiner bahnbrechenden Band verfolgt hat, dürfte von harschem Gegenwind kaum überrascht sein. Davon unbeirrt legen NACHTMYSTIUM mit ihrem neunten Studioalbum "Blight Privilege" erneut ein Meisterwerk vor. "Blight Privilege" kann es sogar mit der großen Trilogie von Alben aufnehmen, die Kritiker und Anhänger der amerikanischen Black Metal (USBM) Vorreiter nach wie vor als den Höhepunkt der frühen Karriere betrachten: "Instinct: Decay" (2006), "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. I" (2008), und "Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II" (2010). Wie ein infernalischer Scharfschütze trifft jeder Song auf "Blight Privilege" voll ins Schwarze. Die ersehnten und unentbehrlichen finsteren Elemente sind vollzählig vorhanden: Kehlig-raue Gesänge, das aggressive Surren der Gitarren, die in einem eiskalten Feuer brennen, und jene Momente ebenso ekstatischer wie erhabener Schönheit in den ansonsten höllischen Klangwelten. Doch auch jene feinen, aber großartigen Details, die der musikalisch äußerst versierte Judd stets geschickt in seinen schwarzen Klanggewittern versteckt hat, wie etwa Elemente aus Post-Punk und Wave finden sich auf "Blight Privilege". Sogar eine Messerspitze Outlaw Country ist neu hinzugekommen. Auch wenn "Blight Privilege" an die glorreichen Zeiten von NACHTMYSTIUM anknüpft – ist es dennoch kein Schwelgen in Nostalgie, sondern eine zukunftsweisende Fortsetzung und die nächste musikalische Evolutionsstufe der Band. Dieses neunte Album des Amerikaners ist von einer Reife geprägt, die aus harten Erfahrungen und einem brutalen Lernprozess resultiert. Judds ebenso charakteristische wie diabolisch eingängige Melodien sind scharfkantiger als je zuvor und haben nichts von ihrem Biss verloren. Das mag auch damit zu tun haben, dass es das erste Album der USBM-Speerspitze ist, das von Judd in einem rauschfreien Zustand komponiert wurde. "Blight Privilege" ist eine Kampfansage, mit der NACHTMYSTIUM den USBM-Thron vehement einfordern. Dieses Album hat wieder die musikalische Kraft und lyrische Kühnheit, um diesem Anspruch gerecht zu werden. Liebt oder hasst das Album, aber NACHTMYSTIUM errichten mit "Blight Privilege" zweifellos einen massiven Meilenstein!

ELLENDE veröffentlichen ihr fünften Studioalbum “Todbringerin” am 30. August 2024 via AOP Records. Die Platte enthält acht Songs bei einer Laufzeit von rund 50 Minuten und folgt der Platte “Ellenbogengesellschaft” (2022).

Mit “Ballade auf den Tod”  stellen ELLENDE nun einen weiteren der neuen Songs vor. Anfang Juli teilte die Band den Track “Verachtung” bei YouTube.

Das Artwork ist ein Ölgemälde aus der Feder L.G.s und wurde von Jan Vermeers Werk “Het Melkmeisje” (1660) inspiriert.

Ab Oktober 2024 sind ELLENDE mit GROZA und SERVANT auf Tour, in Deutschland sind Konzerte in München, Essen, Hamburg und Berlin angekündigt.

Die Goregrind-Band HOUKAGO GRIND TIME hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Cruel Grinder’s Thesis” mit “Kirara Chainsaw” einen dritten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Koncertos Of Kawaiiness: Stealing Jon Chang’s Ideas, A Book By Andrew Lee” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Bakyunsified (Moe to the Gore)” (2020) und “Houkago Grind Time 2: The Second Raid” (2022) das dritte Album des Solo-Projekts von Andrew Lee (RIPPED TO SHREDS, SKULLSMASHER), der sich auch an einer langen Liste an Splits beteiligt hat.

Das Album wurde im Heimstudio von Andy Lee aufgenommen und gemixt und von Colin Marston gemastert. Release-Termin ist der 16. August 2024 via Obliteration Records. Vorab gibt es auch den Track “I Like Dubs Over Subs” zu hören – mit den Gast-Sängern Joseph Schafer (COLONY DROP) und Billy “Oi!” Smeer sowie einem Solo von Tom Maher (MASS EXTINCTION, ex-ORGAN DEALER).

Die Atmopsheric Black Metaller ELLENDE haben den 2. Track, „Ballade auf den Tod“, aus dem kommenden, neu aufgenommenen Album „Todbringerin“ veröffentlicht. Das 2016er Album wurde durch L.G. und Klangschmiede Studio E im Jahr 2023 neu abgemischt und gemastert und wird am 30. August bei AOP Records veröffentlicht.

Haujobb – ”The Machine in the Ghost”

There is electronic music and then there are HAUJOBB. Although “The Machine in the Ghost” marks the impressive tenth studio album of the at the present Leipzig based duo it is again different from all its predecessors. HAUJOBB plainly refuse to do the same thing twice. What sets “The Machine in the Ghost” apart is the prominent use of fieldwork recordings to create the sounds for this album.

In order to achieve the desired effects, HAUJOBB used a mix of software and hardware, in the shape of everyday items. This deliberate nod to a time with less software and more analogue shifting of the dials complements the theme of “The Machine in the Ghost” with a retro touch, yet without indulging in mere nostalgia for its own sake. The album revolves around the highly charged relationship between mind and matter, analogue and digital.

Even with their constant artistic evolution, there is a distinguishable musical handwriting present in all works of HAUJOBB that makes them unique. When the band was founded as a trio in the West German city of Bielefeld, they were still influenced by the Vancouver school of industrial and in particular SKINNY PUPPY and FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, which is quite audible on their early full-length “Homes & Gardens” (1993). Starting from this solid base, it did not take HAUJOBB long to become regarded as the figureheads of a modern electronic industrial sound. On their following albums, “Freeze Frame Reality” (1995) and “Solutions for a Small Planet” (1996), the Germans moved away from their Canadian roots and began to amalgamate IDM (intelligent dance music) with industrial and EBM. This catapulted the Germans onto the international scene and gained them cult status in the US.

After Björn Jünemann, one of the three founders, had left, the remaining original members Daniel Myer and Dejan Samardzic decided to continue as a duo. This did not mean a general change of course for HAUJOBB either. The duo continued to have a strong impact and in particular their 2011 self-released album “New World March” is widely regarded as another milestone.

With “The Machine in the Ghost”, HAUJOBB have created another exciting chapter in their remarkable career. At the very beginning of the next industrial and creative revolution ignited by the furious rise of artificial intelligence, HAUJOBB still have their metaphorical musical fingers right on the pulse of time.

Synth-pop duo Glass Spells are back with Crystals, their first new LP in three years. Each track on the album gleams with an icy allure infused with melancholic undertones and sultry vocals that pull at the heartstrings. This mesmerizing collection of songs sweeps the listener into a cinematic realm illuminated by neon lights, evoking introspection and undeniable charm.

Hailing from the sun-soaked shores of San Diego, Anthony Ramirez and Tania Costello have already made their mark at major West Coast festivals like Darker Waves and Cruel World. Ramirez, the instrumental virtuoso, seamlessly melds his diverse musical talents into the band’s entrancing melodic vistas, while Costello’s commanding vocals and evocative lyrics bring forth euphoria and heartache with heightened emotional resonance. The combined effect of these compositions leaves a haunting imprint, each note dripping with emotion and echoing the duo’s knack for blending the dark and the delicate.

The new album Crystals kicks things off with Without You, a tale of yearning and desire for connection. Costello’s voice trembles, longing for love and touch, echoing the emptiness felt in their absence. The lyrics paint a picture of deep longing and emotional void, centered on the desire for connection.

Venom slides into a sultry, dark disco beat, with Ramirez’s shimmering synths swirling around determined vocals. The track pulses with an ominous allure, drawing you into its web of unrequited love. It portrays the speaker as a mere reflection of their lover’s desires, consumed by the venom of affection and the silence of rejection. Craving true connection, they seek to be made whole by their lover, revealing a mix of desire, deception, and vulnerability.



Glow shifts to a more melancholic tone, ending on a somber note with the line, “I don’t even know who you are.” The song depicts waking to silence and paralysis, facing the decline of a once vibrant love. The struggle to escape a painful reality is palpable. One lies for love, dies from the pain, and tries to flee a tormenting place. There’s a sense of betrayal and confusion, not recognizing the person they once knew. The longing and denial are central, painting a vivid picture of emotional conflict and heartache.

Before Dawn dazzles us from the start with a glorious synth arpeggio, setting the stage for Costello’s mournful pathos. Her wistful words weave a tale of lost connections and lingering regret; reflecting on burned memories and a heart turned to dust. The recurring theme is the profound sense of loss and the longing for reconciliation.

The title track, Crystals, opens with a spacey synth and an 80s-does-50s girl group vibe. It carries a Lynchian feel, reminiscent of a Chromatics tune on speed. It delves into a past love, capturing those moments when life felt simple and full of promise. The imagery of multicolored lights, neon skies, and dance floors conjures up vibrant memories. Despite the inevitable end of the relationship, there’s a poignant yearning for the time when they were together, reflecting on the dream-like quality and crystal clarity of those moments.

Consequences is a more tender synth-pop ballad about facing the music, giving advice in her sweet soprano. The theme revolves around themes of worry, doubt, and resilience. The song encourages diving into the moment, finding light, and drying tears. There’s a plea for understanding and reassurance, emphasizing not losing oneself amidst challenges. Ultimately, it speaks to enduring the night and finding some solace until tomorrow.

Hechizos, sung entirely in Spanish, takes an unflinching plunge into the profound and often tumultuous emotional landscape of betrayal, the raw, unvarnished emotions that stem from that piercing sting, and the journey toward catharsis and self-discovery in its aftermath.

“Writing Hechizos was like going back to my roots, it was a deeply personal process for me,” muses Costello. “It was a chance to reconnect with my first language and revisit the rock en español – songs I grew up listening to…I hope listeners find a voice for their own struggles and a reminder of their strength.”

Haunting describes the journey of a wounded lover on a deserted road, grappling with pain and the remnants of a faded romance. They ponder the possibility of staying together if dreams are shattered, questioning the endurance of love. The recurring theme of fading pain and fading dreams underscores a sense of hopelessness and longing for resolution, capturing the emotional turbulence of love and loss.
