Kaum zu glauben, dass „Monuments“, das Debütalbum von MODERN RITES bereits vor drei Jahren erschien. So präsent und frisch wirkt es bis heute – und so rast die Zeit. Was sind schon drei Jahre im Angesicht der Ewigkeit, der Endlosigkeit? Und in dieser Tradition denken auch MODERN RITES, denn das Artwork von „Endless“ soll Einkehr, Selbstreflexion und eine endlose Suche nach Antworten visualisieren. Ein schöner Gedanke, den auch die Musik trägt. Im Raum zwischen zeitgemäßem, beinahe postmodernem Black und Death Metal und Industrial ist genügend Raum, den es zu erforschen gilt.

Nachdem MODERN RITES auf ihrem Debüt als Individuen noch hörbar auf zwei Seiten des Atlantiks standen, wirkt „Endless“ schon deutlich verwobener. Es gibt nicht mehr nur die „Gitarrenseite“ von AARA-Gitarrist Berg aka Katalyst und das rhythmische und atmosphärische Gegenstück von Jonny Warren alias Archytekt. Viel mehr greifen beide Pole besser ineinander und ergänzen sich. Vermutlich hat die Arbeit an „Endless“ deshalb drei Jahre und nicht mehr nur ein paar Monate gedauert. Das Ergebnis kann sich aber hören lassen: „Endless“ ist ein monolithisches, pulsierendes Album, dessen düstere Atmosphäre mit Heaviness, Aggression und Kohärenz angereichert wird.

Aggression und Introspektion: MODERN RITES verweben beide Säulen der Musik auf „Endless“ besser als auf dem Debütalbum
„Endless“ scheint auf den ersten Eindruck getrieben von catchy und wuchtigen Riffs, ummantelt von dunkler, kalter Atmosphäre. Unter der Oberfläche bewegt sich in einigen Songs aber deutlich mehr. Die Details verstecken sich hinter der schroffen Soundwand. Somit funktionieren MODERN RITES für diejenigen, die Eingängigkeit lieben ebenso wie für die, die sich gern an Musik festbeißen. Und gerade die Gitarren lassen aufhorchen. Sei es der wuchtige Sound, die wirklich fetten Riffs in „Lost Lineage“ und „For Nothing“ oder die subtil eingewobenen Leadgitarren, wie sie eben auch bei AARA stehen könnten.

Und doch ist Jonny Warren hörbar der Kopf hinter MODERN RITES. Sein Songwriting, die Atmosphäre und seine giftigen, verbesserten Vocals mögen nicht so im Vordergrund stehen wie die Gitarrenarbeit. Aber vor allem der in Richtung Ewigkeit rasende Titelsong und das abschließende, repetitive, aller Brutalität zum Trotz auf eine Art Erlösung abzielende „Philosophenweg“ verorten die Musik in Sphären, die fern vom Metal liegen. Gerade hier ist seine kompositorische Handschrift sichtbar. An dieses eigenwillige Sounddesign muss man sich erst ein wenig gewöhnen, dies funktioniert aber verdammt gut, auch durch den Mix von Simón Da Silva.

Ein kohärentes und vielschichtiges Werk: Mit „Endless“ spannen MODERN RITES einen weiten musikalischen Bogen
Insofern liefern MODERN RITES Futter für Geist und Eingeweide. „Endless“ zielt auf beides ab und überzeugt konsequent mit einigen sehr starken Songs. Wenn auf Album Nummer drei noch das Herz berührt wird, erreicht das Duo vielleicht schon die Ganzheitlichkeit. Gleichbleibend ist das Niveau auf „Endless“ außerdem nicht. Mit „Veil Of Opulence“ und „Becoming“ finden sich zwei Songs mit etwas Leerlauf auf dem Album und der Verfasser hätte gerne noch mehr Fokus auf Atmosphäre und elektronische Elemente gehabt. Dennoch: „Endless“ ist eine klare Steigerung zum Debütalbum und setzt sich mutig zwischen die Stühle von Genres, die oftmals zu eng gedacht werden. Wer auf eine catchy, etwas weniger wahnsinnige und doch energiegeladene Variante ihrer Labelkollegen THE AMENTA Lust hat, der findet hier das passende Album.

Starflyer 59’s Silver is a landmark album that brought heavier sounds to shoegaze, shaping the genre’s modern identity. As one of the most pivotal bands of the ’90s shoegaze scene, Starflyer 59 often gets overshadowed in the genre’s history. À La Carte Records pays tribute to their influence with All My Friends Who Play Guitar: A Tribute to Starflyer 59, featuring contributions from some of their favorite current shoegaze acts. The compilation showcases artists like Doused, Bedroom Eyes, All Under Heaven, Clear Capsule, Spirits of Leo, Broken Head, and Bonded, each putting their own spin on the legacy that Starflyer 59 built.

Clear Capsule bursts onto the compilation with their take on 1994’s Hazel Would, a cover that grabs the original by the collar and dusts off the last three decades with a fresh new polish. The Los Angeles outfit, led by frontman Bryce Pulaski, brings a certain fury to this classic. Pulaski reimagines it entirely, pouring in a level of ingenuity by taking the relentless drive of the original track and layering it with a towering wall of noise, blaring feedback, and drumming so intense it feels like it could crack concrete.

Hazel Would alludes to the sting of betrayal, capturing a clash of weariness and want, torn between the urge to escape and the need to stay. “Honestly, I’d rather sleep, but you’re holding me to it all,” they admit, caught in the crossfire of their own emotions. There’s a craving to lift someone up while bracing for the inevitable fall, suggesting a tangled bond filled with devotion and doubt. It’s a confession of conflict, where love and regret dance in the shadows, leaving the speaker balancing on a tightrope of longing and lingering guilt.

The sinister video, directed by JJ Degen, spins a driving tale as dark as a moonless midnight in the City of Angels. A shadowy figure grips the wheel tight, eyes darting to the rearview, glancing back at the package on the seat beside him. Inside, a bubble-wrapped head bobs with every turn, every jolt—who it belongs to is anybody’s guess.

But the questions don’t end there. Who—or what—is he running from? The figure’s frantic pace and tense expression tell a story of desperation and dread. There’s something in his eyes, a mix of fear and determination, as if he knows this drive leads nowhere good. And what’s in store at the end of this midnight run? A reckoning, a reveal, or perhaps just another twist in a city full of dead ends and dark alleys. The mystery deepens with every mile; heads will roll.

The spirit of 1980s indie pop and new wave curls around “Tonight,” the latest single from Welsh synth/post-punk duo Plastic Estate’s upcoming album, Code d’Amour, like a plume of smoke in a dimly lit bar—familiar, yet intoxicatingly fresh. There’s a whiff of nostalgia here, a nod to the gilded Sophisti-pop era, but Plastic Estate is not in the business of mere revival. Instead, they weave their crystal-clear modern sensibilities into a tapestry of soft harmonies, pensive guitar lines, and synths that flicker between whimsy and introspection.

The echoes are unmistakable—Aztec Camera’s jangly intimacy, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions’ poetic detachment, ABC’s suave sophistication, and the lush textures of Prefab Sprout. Yet Plastic Estate aren’t just ticking off influences. Their sound is a slick, smart recalibration of these elements, distilled into something stylishly their own. The duo manages to evoke a time when pop was both literate and unabashedly romantic while keeping a finger firmly on the pulse of the present, beckoning us to step into their world, where the past dances seamlessly with the now, in a haze of melody and memory.

Their latest single, Tonight, dives into the murky waters of desire and detachment, where longing and loathing dance in a dark alley. It’s a tug-of-war between reaching out and running away—a cycle of craving connection but also craving a clean break. The tension is thick with uncertainty, wanting to see someone – while dreading the ghosts they bring. Plastic Estate lays bare the battle of moving forward while hanging on to what’s already slipped through the cracks, in that familiar fight between old emotions and the pull of a fresh start.

Director Claudia De Acetis spins us into a nocturnal waltz with Plastic Estate for the beautifully filmed video clip, where shadows play their own tricks and neon lights are the only constant companions. We weave through tunnels that echo with lost footsteps and glide along streets bathed in the haze of half-forgotten dreams. The moon lingers overhead, casting its cold, knowing glance on a waterfront that whispers secrets to those bold enough to listen. The city becomes a metaphor for a sleepless soul—where every corner turned offers a new mystery, and every flicker of light promises both escape and entrapment…a midnight affair of uncertain ends.

Hailing from the Welsh capital city of Cardiff, Plastic Estate, comprised of Nicholas James and Stanley Fouracres, is a standout in a small yet superb scene of young post-punk bands. Plastic Estate used the pandemic year to write ten new songs juggling the heritage of lost golden era and the pressing presence of the here and now, sounding classic and contemporary at once.

“Not an easy task,”  says the band. “It is rare to stand in the exact spot where you have a full view of the days behind you and the complete control of the moment you are in.”

Es sei wieder zusammen, was zusammengehört, lassen END OF GREEN verlauten. Die Dark Rock-Band hat einen neuen Plattenvertrag mit Reaper Entertainment abgeschlossen. Hinter dem Label steckt auch SUMMER BREEZE-Gründer Achim Ostertag, bei dessen ehemaliger Plattenfirma Silverdust Records die Süddeutschen ebenfalls schon unter Vertrag standen.

END OF GREEN erklären:

„Es fühlt sich ein bisschen an, wie heimzukommen. Denn ganz doof gesagt:  Würden wir ein eigenes Label gründen, dann wären Achim, Flori und Greg exakt die Leute, die wir fragen würden, wie man das eigentlich macht. Dann würden wir eine Weile reden und feststellen, dass das alles ziemlich gut passt. Also, lassen wir den Schritt doch einfach weg und kommen gleich nach Hause.”

Wir mögen das, wenn es menschelt und wir brauchen das auch. Bei REAPER ENTERTAINMENT können wir Mensch sein. Endlich wieder.“ 

Achim Ostertag lässt darüber hinaus im Namen Reaper Entertainments wissen:

“Wir sind überglücklich, dass END OF GREEN nun zur Reaper-Familie gehören. Mich verbindet eine sehr lange Freundschaft mit der Band, die bis zu den Summer Breeze Anfangszeiten zurückreicht. Die Band spielte bereits 1999 beim zweiten Summer Breeze Festival und war über 10 Jahre bei SILVERDUST Records. Als ich Greg und Flori von der Idee erzählte, END OF GREEN zu Reaper zu holen, waren sie beide direkt Feuer und Flamme. So wächst zusammen, was zusammen gehört.”

Ein neues Studioalbum soll 2025 folgen, noch gibt es jedoch keine weiteren Details zum Nachfolger von “Void Estate” (2017)

Nachdem man im letzten Jahr die Silberhochzeit mit einem würdigen Best Of Album feiern konnte, legt man nun das 11te Studioalbum in die geneigten Ohren der Fans und interessierten Zufallshörer. Und die Band klingt so frisch wie eh und je und bestätigt das Sprichwort von der Melange zwischen Wein und Alter. Klanglich liefert das Werk die perfekte Melange aus MA-Rock, Gitarre, (Power)-Metal und ein fast verstecktes romantisches Kleid des traditionellen, rockigen Sounds.

Eröffnet wird das Werk mit dem energetisch-verwegenen „Achtung Mensch“, welches auch gleich eine klare Botschaft hinterlässt. Die Dudelsäcke beherbergen die Botschaft, die Gitarren sind wütend. Aus der Ich-Perspektive geschrieben, lässt der Teufel es herabregnen und Zarathustra gleich den Abstieg vom Berg mit galanten Texten über die Menschheit erzählen.

„Feuer in der Nacht“ ist dann der typische Tanzwut Song, bei dem man sich feiert und dabei die Fans mitnimmt. Das Gesamtbild in einer lächelnden Aggressivität dargeboten, die Energie der Gitarren lassen die Lüfte der Dudelsäcke mit Kondensstreifen durch die Luft schweben und der Teufel wandelt lächelnd auf dem Teppich, welche ihm die verführerischen Klänge darlegen.

Grandios, wie mit einer gefühlvollen Theatralik das Früher und die kindlichen Erinnerungen in „Loch in der Mauer“ verarbeitet werden. Trotz der verführerischen Energie besitzt dieser Song das textliche Momentum der Melancholie. Das folgende „Neues Spiel, neues Glück“ ist kämpfend und voller kleiner Anekdoten. Ungezügelter Wein fließt in den Blasebalg der Flöten aus dem Norden. Zwischendrin lässt man die Hosen und In Extremo an der Haltestelle stehen.

„Noch eine Flasche Wein“ ist für mich der beste Song. Auf dem ersten Ohr ein melancholisches Trinklied, welches das Leben und den Moment im Mittelpunkt stellt. Auf dem zweitem Ohr eine gefühlvolle Ballade, welche trotz der aktuellen Scheiße immer noch die Liebe, das Leben, die Freiheit abfeiert, dennoch nachdenklich in den morgigen Tag blickt, der dystopisch zurückblickt. Musikalisch und textlich großartig arrangiert.

Das verführerische „roter Mohn“ ist ein galantes Liebeslied, welches sich nach dem Sommer sehnt und ganz nebenbei einen durchdringenden Refrain beherbergt und von weiblichen Backings begleitet wird. „Wenn du betrunken bist“ beginnt etwas komisch, weil man irgendwie an die Drum Machine-Eruptionen der Sisters erinnert wird. Die wilde und rohe Darbietung ist dennoch ein kleiner Lug in die Vergangenheit.

Fazit: Über 25 Jahre, 11 Alben, massig Live Auftritte: Kann es da noch besondere Weiterentwicklungen geben, außer das Mehr an Altersweisheiten? Ja… es kann! Allein deswegen, weil die Welt sich weiterdreht und neben der typischen Wanderung des Nordpols, der Mensch für Veränderungen auf unserem blauen Planeten sorgt. Tanzwut haben ihren typischen Sound hie und dort leicht verfeinert, neue Einflüsse eingepflegt und textlich eine betörendes Werk abgeliefert, welches das Leben in all seinen Facetten feiert, bedauert, offenbart, erinnert, anklagt, freispricht und auch mancher Interpretation freigibt. Jeder Song für sich spinnt sich durch die Gehirnwindungen, sei es ganz einfach als Ohrwurm oder zum Nachdenken. (andreas)

„Musik war schon immer unser Weg, uns mit unseren dunkelsten Gefühlen auseinanderzusetzen und ein Gefühl der Befreiung zu finden. Ich hoffe, dass dieser Song bei denjenigen, die mit Angst und Depression zu kämpfen haben, Anklang findet und sie daran erinnert, dass sie nicht allein sind. Deine Angst mag dich als Geisel halten. Aber du kannst dich auch dafür entscheiden, dich zu wehren!“

5 Jahre! So lange musste ich noch nie auf ein neues Album der Pseudoägyptologen von NILE warten. Könnte natürlich mit den Neuzugängen, u.a. Dan Vadim Von, der aktuelle Gitarrist von Morbid Angel, zu tun haben, obwohl die beide auch erst dieses Jahr dazugekommen sind. Oder auch mit dem Labelwechsel. Na ja. Eigentlich auch wurscht, denn von NILE bekommt man immer was man erwartet.

Technisch anspruchsvoller, brutaler Death Metal mit pseudoägyptischen Anklängen.

Und das wird auch auf Album Nummer 10, welches auch den Einstand bei Napalm Records darstellt, mit dem „süßen“ Namen „The Underworld Awaits Us All“ geboten.
Das erste was mir bei den Vorabsingles auffiel war der glasklare, aufgeräumte Sound, der trotzdem völlig NILE-typisch ist. Da habe ich mich direkt aus zwei Gründen auf die Scheibe gefreut. Erstens hatte ich gar nicht auf dem Schirm, das ein neues Album ansteht und zweitens hat mir der erste Song mit dem knackigen Titel „Chapter For Not Being Hung Upside Down On A Stake In The Underworld And Made To Eat Feces By The Four Apes“ in seinen nicht mal vier Minuten mächtig das Esszimmer poliert.
Auf dem Album folgt als Track 3 das nicht mal zweiminütige „To Strike With Secret Fang“, welches noch brutaler ausfällt. (Beide unten als Video zu sehen)
Einzig kürzer ist mit 1:18min noch das schöne, ruhige Instrumental „The Pentagrammathion of Nephren-Ka“, welches dann wohl den Kreis zum Debüt schließt, nehme ich an.
Ansonsten bewegt man sich zwischen den üblichen ca. vier Minuten plus und herrlichen 8:36min beim Titelsong.
Ich muss gestehen, dass ich in den ersten paar Durchläufen, trotz der geilen Produktion, ein wenig Probleme mit der Scheibe hatte. Nicht falsch verstehen, bis ich sage, dass NILE ein schlechtes oder gar unwürdiges Album vorgelegt haben, müsste schon noch so einiges passieren. Aber anfangs blieb wenig hängen und außer dem Sound, habe ich mich gefragt, warum ich jetzt grad dieses Album und nicht eines meiner 3 liebsten (Black Seeds Of Vengeance, In Their Darkened Shrines, Those Whom The Gods Detest) hören soll.
Ich habe jetzt gute 10 Durchgänge hinter mir. Und? Ich höre erstmal nur noch diese Scheibe. Sie ist mit jedem Durchlauf gewachsen und bietet viel. Knackige Granaten, ein kurzes akustisches Gitarreninstrumental, abwechslungsreiche lange Songs und eben alles das was ich von NILE haben möchte. Mit dem männlichen Klargesang, z.B. in „True Gods Of The Desert“ war ich direkt d´accord, aber mit dem weiblichen Klargesang im gleichen Track habe ich so meine Probleme. Nicht weil er weiblich ist, sondern mit seinem Sound und Platz im Mix. Aber das wiegt kaum so schwer, dass ich diese Scheibe nicht trotzdem empfehlen muss!
Nach einem holprigen Start, bin ich jetzt völlig von dieser Scheibe eingenommen und begeistert. Ich hoffe das hält noch lange an! (hendrik)

Die Schweizer Metalcore-Band VICIOUS RAIN hat eine weitere neue Single hochgeladen: “Play Pretend ” bei YouTube. Auch die Vorab-Songs “Shadow Dancer” sowie “Like A Nightmare” sind als Clips bei YouTube abrufbar. Entnommen sind alle Tracks dem kommenden Album “There Is Beauty In Letting Go”, das am 11. ‘The Devil & Lovers’ ist ein gefühlvoller Song, der die bittersüße Geschichte zweier Menschen erzählt, die eine tiefe Leidenschaft und Verbundenheit teilen, aber durch die Umstände oder das Timing getrennt werden. Der Song fängt die intensiven Gefühle von Liebe und Sehnsucht ein und symbolisiert gleichzeitig die Hindernisse, die zwei Menschen davon abhalten können, zusammen zu sein. All revealed to little more than polite applause
In 1808, English artist/poet/mystic William Blake unleashed the stirring Jerusalem, from the preface to his epic Milton: A Poem in Two Books, part of his collection of writings known as the Prophetic Books. Its theme ties into the Book of Revelation (3:12 and 21:2), hinting at a Second Coming, where Christ ushers in a New Jerusalem, a place of perfect peace and love. Blake questions whether the presence of Christ once briefly turned England into heaven, starkly contrasting with the “dark Satanic Mills” of the Industrial Revolution and warning of the marring of the peaceful, pastoral landscapes of Albion. In it, Blake poses four questions, not claiming Christ’s visit as fact, but rather prompting us to imagine an ideal society in England, regardless of any divine presence. The first two are as follows:

On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,

Nearly two hundred years later, in 1988, Frank Tovey (Fad Gadget) took another gander at Blake’s prophetic vision of the ‘green and pleasant land’ with his own haunting prophecy, New Jerusalem. Here, the dream of a perfect heaven on earth has vanished, replaced by a grim dystopia of a world in decay—a stark scenario that feels all too familiar in today’s relentless news cycle.

Tovey’s unsettling vision aligns closely with the reflective grief of Some Days I Drink My Coffee By The Grave of William Blake, the striking new single from The The’s Ensoulment—their first album in 24 years. Don’t be deceived by the mellow groove and Matt Johnson’s deep, whispering croon; this charged political anthem revisits Blake’s prophecy, grappling with the harsh reality of a post-industrial world and the violent politics that ensnare us. Johnson stands as a modern oracle, much like Blake, as he navigates the wreckage of a broken society and warns of what’s yet to come.

“I have often drunk my coffee by the grave of William Blake – though these days there are actually two gravestones dedicated to him in the small dissenters’ cemetery that he was thrown into when he died,” says frontman Matt Johnson. “On and off over the last 40 years I have lived close by and have always found it an inspiring place to sit and meditate upon life. Nostalgia is part of the human condition and change is inevitable in our lives and in the world around us. Large capital cities such as London often amplify the sense of change, although one thing that never seems to change is the cynicism of those in power.”

The main melody harkens back to the classic Animals song House of the Rising Sun, with its jazz drumming, organ, and eerie English folk inspiration, with a dash of Leonard Cohen, PJ Harvey, and Nick Cave for good measure. Some Days I Drink My Coffee By The Grave of William Blake paints a bleak picture of a London that’s long lost its soul, a city draped in grief where the sun hangs low and church bells toll like a dirge. We sit pondering by William Blake’s grave, amidst a nation in decline—”perfidious Albion”—a place where greed cloaks itself in patriotism and freedoms are façades, masking a deeper rot. Words have become weapons, truth is twisted into lies, and dissent is gagged. Blake’s once-mystic imagery of “burning gold” clouds and the inevitable fall of this “unpleasant land”  now strikes like a warning bell, a call to see through the deceit before it’s too late.

The video, directed by Tim Pope—who helmed most of The The’s iconic clips in the ’80s and early ’90s—features a stripped-down acoustic set from the band, reminding us of a good old fashioned pub singalong or a campfire lullaby.

Conceived in 1979 by Matt Johnson, THE THE stands as a quintessential avant-garde British post-punk ensemble, renowned for their ever-evolving sound and pushing creative boundaries. Their debut, 1983’s Soul Mining, melded rock, funk, and electronic elements, signaling their genre-defying ambition. Critical triumphs followed with Infected three years later, then Mind Bomb in 1989. Featuring thought-provoking lyrics and groundbreaking videos, THE THE has retained a steadfast following despite extended absences, always resurfacing with fresh and potent artistic expressions.

Written, demoed, and mixed at Studio Cinéola in London, the creative haven of Matt Johnson, the driving force behind THE THE, Ensoulment promises a thoughtful and poignant exploration of these timeless topics. This twelve-song collection marks THE THE’s return to the studio, with the release set for Friday, 6 September 2024, under the Cinéola/earMUSIC label.

The songs were further refined in rehearsals ahead of a six-day session at Real World Studios near Bath, where Matt was joined by long-standing THE THE members James Eller (bass), DC Collard (keyboards), Earl Harvin (drums), and Barrie Cadogan (lead guitar). The album also marks the return of co-producer and engineer Warne Livesey, who previously worked on Infected (1986) and Mind Bomb (1989).

Now, THE THE unveils Ensoulment, their first collection of new material in a quarter century. This forthcoming new album tackles enduring themes of love, sex, war, politics, life, and death, delving into the essence of what it means to be human in our times.

Bring us our arrows of desire! The The will kick off their Ensouled world tour on September 10 in Oslo, performing Ensoulment in its entirety, followed by a second set of classics—some of which haven’t been played live in decades.

Sängerin CHARLOTTE WESSELS hat ihr neues Album “The Obsession” für 20. September 2024 angekündigt. Zum vierten Preview-Song “The Crying Room” steht jetzt ein Clip bei YouTube bereit. Auch “Dopamine” kann man sich dort ansehen. Unterstützt wird Wessels hier von Kollegin Simone Simons (EPICA).

Mit “Chasing Sunset” hat die Musikern zuvor einen weiteren Clip veröffentlicht. Einen Höreindruck verschafft außerdem die Single “The Exorcism”, zu welcher Wessels auch ein Musikvideo produziert hat.

Für “The Obsession” arbeitete die Musikern mit einer kompletten Band zusammen: Gitarrist Timo Somers, Bassist Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije und Schlagzeuger Joey Marin de Boer teilten sich bereits mit CHARLOTTE WESSELS während ihrer Zeit in DELAIN die Bühne. Komplettiert wird das Line-up von Pianistin und Orgelspielerin Sophia Vernikov.

“The Obsession” erscheint via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital und wurde von Guido Aalbers gemischt. Das Mastering hingegen übernahm Andy VanDette. Über die Platte hat CHARLOTTE WESSELS Folgendes zu sagen:

„Einerseits erzählt dieses Album eine sehr persönliche Geschichte – durch sein unbeabsichtigtes Thema der Angst, der zwanghaften Gedanken und der Flucht vor ihnen – und gleichzeitig repräsentiert es die Freude, mit allen, die an der Entstehung dieses Albums beteiligt waren, die wahren Formen der Songs zu finden. Deshalb habe ich The Obsession als Titel gewählt. Er bezieht sich auf meine persönlichen Herausforderungen mit OCD, die viele der Songs inspiriert haben – aber ich habe auch begonnen, die Band als The Obsession zu bezeichnen – weil es Momente im Studio mit ihnen gab, die mich wirklich daran erinnert haben, warum ich überhaupt besessen davon bin, Musik zu machen.“

Chicago-based darkwave trio French Police has just unveiled a new music video from their album BULLY. The video is a visual accompaniment to their Spanish-language track “Crush,” which envelops listeners in a hauntingly evocative atmosphere tinged with longing and a touch of peril, reminiscent of the brooding sounds of Molchat Doma, KINO, and Lebanon Hanover.

Brian Flores’s voice is thick with need, a smoky plea for a connection that cuts through the cold. They’re looking for something real, something to grip when the world slips sideways—a hand to hold, a promise whispered in the shadows. The repetition is a heartbeat; a steady drum of desire that refuses to relent.

The lyrics curl around you like a wisp of smoke in a shadowy bar, stirring up that old, familiar longing. It’s a plea for something real, a connection that digs deep, refusing to be brushed aside. There’s a rawness here, something that lingers like a bad habit, leaving you restless and wondering what could have been. The kind of desire that doesn’t just fade away but sticks with you, gnawing at the edges of your thoughts, whispering in the dark when you’re all alone.

The blue-hued video shows French Police playing live in a darkened, mysterious space that feels at once cavernous and claustrophobic. It is enigmatic, hazy, and showcases the band’s live energy.

Brian Flores performs on this album like a man taking a swing at the shadows lurking in his history. “This album is dedicated to the bullies of my past,” he declares, turning BULLY into a saga of strength and defiance. Ah, the exquisite agony of growing up in a place where your thoughts land with a thud and your dreams are met with blank stares. It’s like dancing in a room full of statues, each one colder than the last. You find yourself a stranger among the familiar, watching as they prattle on about the small, the simple, the safe. Meanwhile, your heart strains against the leash, longing for something grander, something that doesn’t shrink to fit. You learn quickly that loneliness isn’t a lack of company; it’s being surrounded by those who look at you but never quite see you.

Czechia’s own Empty Young just dropped a new single that digs deep into the grit and grind of feeling like a stranger in a strange land. Envious is a track soaked in frustration and the fatigue of living among people who don’t quite get your beat. The sound strikes somewhere between the raw edge of Killing Joke, the cool menace of a toned-down Lords of the New Church, and the frantic pulse of early New Order—all while spiraling into a whirl of melancholic darkness.

The loneliness of isolation seeps through every note, anchored by a killer bassline and guitars that twist around each other like an ouroboros. There’s a vibe of unease; a sense that something’s about to snap.

464.330€ – exakt so viel Geld spülte im Jahr 2017 die Crowdfunding-Plattform Indiegogo in die WINTERSUN-Kassen. Der Verwendungszweck: Ein bandeigenes Hauptquartier sollte her, auch um das bereits damals überfällige „Time II“ fertigzustellen. In der Mixing-Hölle schien der zweite Teil des Doppelwerks gefangen und das schon seit Jahren. Genug für seinen Traum war der eingetriebene Betrag letztlich jedoch nicht, wie Mastermind Jari Mäenpää erläutert: Nur ein semiprofessionelles Studio sei letzten Endes mit den finanziellen Mitteln zu realisieren gewesen.

Dass der Sänger, Gitarrist und Visionär nach Perfektion strebt und daher am liebsten alles selbst machen möchte, ist durchaus eine bewundernswerte Einstellung. Ob er sich damit jedoch immer einen Gefallen tut, steht auf einem anderen Blatt Papier. Denn nicht nur die enorme Zeitspanne zwischen angeblicher Fertigstellung der sechs Tracks und letztendlichem Release hinterlässt Ratlosigkeit; auch das Produktionslevel rechtfertigt die lange Wartezeit nicht im Geringsten.

Jari Mäenpää hat die klassischen WINTERSUN-Tugenden nicht vergessen
„Time II“ klingt mitnichten nach Low-Budget, leidet jedoch ein wenig unter der modernen Regie: Für ein Album voller orchestraler Arrangements, Synthesizer und Ethno-Samples klingt das Resultat beizeiten arg zusammengedrängt, wobei sich insbesondere die Schlagzeug-Samples eher unangenehm bemerkbar machen. Überdies können die fernöstlichen Klänge des einleitenden Instrumentals „Fields Of Snow“ ihren wohl künstlichen Ursprung nicht verbergen.

Akzeptieren wir jedoch diese Rahmenbedingungen, öffnet sich ein Werk, das mittels Ambition, Feingefühl und kompetenten Songwritings ohne zu stolpern durch seine überlangen Kompositionen navigiert. Die klassischen WINTERSUN-Tugenden prägen etwa „The Way Of The Fire“, wo Symphonic-Bombast das Melodeath-Gerüst anreichert, verspielte Soli in der zweiten Hälfte auf einen dramatischen Höhepunkt zusteuern und punktuell gestreute Folk-Anleihen dem Stück Leichtigkeit schenken. Wiederkehrende Themen und solider Klargesang verleihen schließlich Struktur, so dass wir zu keinem Zeitpunkt die Orientierung verlieren.

Abwechslung und Dramatik sind Grundzutaten für das ambitionierte “Time II”
Im Vergleichsweise gemächlichen Tempo beschwört „One With The Shadows“ die nachdenkliche Seite WINTERSUNs, die hier beizeiten wie eine geerdete Version TURISAS‘ anmutet und mit seinem Tapetenwechsel zum exakt richtigen Zeitpunkt kommt. Das Kontrastprogramm fährt im Folgenden das furiose „Storm“ auf, wo Schlagzeug und Orchester-Samples Schulter and Schulter nach vorne drängen, so dass wir uns selbst inmitten eines chaotischen Orkans wägen.

Die Kulisse, die Mäenpää hier zeichnet, ist in seiner Dramatik durch und durch vereinnahmend, weshalb wir tatsächlich so etwas wie Erleichterung empfinden, als zum zarten Ende hin die Sonne durch die Wolkendecke zu brechen scheint. Dass „Silver Leaves“ anschließend zum fernöstlichen Einschlag zurückkehrt und das Album mit dezenter Folk-Schlagseite ausklingen lässt, ist so stimmig wie schlüssig, obgleich das 13-minütige Finale im Nachgang nur in Auszügen in Erinnerung bleibt.

WINTERSUN entführen mit “Time II” in eine vielschichtige Klangwelt
Ähnlich verhält es sich mit „Time II“ als Gesamtwerk: Den Erwartungen gerecht werden kann eine solche Platte nach zwölf Jahren und den endlosen Versprechungen Mäenpääs ohnehin kaum. So erreicht uns im Jahr 2024 ein durchweg gutes, selten atemberaubendes Werk. Ein Album, dem man die 464.330€ Infrastruktur bestenfalls bedingt anhört und das uns doch in eine vielschichtige Klangwelt entführt. Jedenfalls für den Augenblick, denn ein Album für die Ewigkeit ist „Time II“ leider nicht.

Wenn sich ein Underground-Kuriosum aufmacht, mehr als eben nur das zu werden, kann einiges schiefgehen – wie das so ist, bei einer Band am Scheideweg. Haben sie das Zeug dazu, mehr als nur eine Handvoll Bandcamp-User zu überzeugen, oder verlieren sie ihren Charme? OTHER WORLD, von 2012 bis 2019 das Soloprojekt von Christopher A. Garcia, hatten vor knapp zehn Jahren eine recht produktive Phase, gefolgt von einer längeren Stille. Die kalifornische Post Black Metal-Band wäre beinahe im Sumpf der Vergessenheit gelandet, doch dass ihr zweites Album „Tenebrous“ lange auf sich warten ließ, hat erfreuliche Gründe. OTHER WORLD haben sich zu einer vollen Band gemausert und erklimmen so mühelos die nächste Entwicklungsstufe.

Brutaler Gitarrensound, introspektive Musik: OTHER WORLD verbinden auf „Tenebrous“ mühelos scheinbare Gegensätze.
Ist das allein schon Rechtfertigung genug für einen neuen Hype? Nicht so schnell. OTHER WORLD machen aber schon vieles richtig. Das fängt an beim räudigen, brutalen Gitarrensound, durch den sich OTHER WORLD von vielen der zu glatten Post Black Metal-Bands positiv abheben. „Tenebrous“ zeigt die Zähne, gerade in Verbindung mit der unpolierten, aber doch voluminösen Produktion. Die kalifornische Band findet daneben die richtige Mischung aus Aggression und Atmosphäre. Dabei bleibt „Tenebrous“ ein introspektives Album, dessen Facetten sich schnell offenbaren: Aus dem rauen Klanggerüst stechen schmerzhaft-schöne Harmonien und eine abgründige Aura hervor.

So positionieren sich OTHER WORLD als eine etwas melancholischere Version von WOE oder als geerdete und kompaktere ULTHA. „Tenebrous“ schafft es damit zwar nicht, aus dem Genre herauszustechen, wird aber zu einem soliden Genrebeitrag mit gut geschriebenen, cleveren Songs. „From Innocence“ und „Ash, Teeth & Bone“ schaffen es den Weg von rasendem Black Metal hin zu Melodik ohne Brüche zu nehmen. Gerade die cleanen Chöre, die andere Bands eher zum Fremdschämen einsetzen, werten die Songs von OTHER WORLD auf. Sänger Stephen Parker (ex-PILLORIAN) liefert sowohl im extremen als auch harmonischen Bereich, eine wirklich gute Performance ab. Gerade bei „Agony Exhaled By Mist“ wird der Fokus auf Stimmung und Melodik gelegt, während OTHER WORLD ein wenig in Richtung Death-Doom schielen – und gerade dabei funktioniert die gesangliche Varianz außerordentlich gut.

„Tenebrous“ dreht den Post Black Metal nicht auf links, OTHER WORLD liefern aber spannende Genre-Kost mit Blick über den Tellerrand.
Die wirklich großen, berührenden Songs stehen auf „Tenebrous“ indes noch nicht. Auch wenn das abschließende „To Decay“ den Doom beinahe gleichwertig neben Black Metal stehen lässt und ein großes Finale anreißt, das letzte Quäntchen Genialität fehlt noch. Doch es wäre unfair von einer Band wie OTHER WORLD, die erst zusammenwachsen muss, Wunder zu erwarten. „Tenebrous“ ist kurz wie kurzweilig und funktioniert über die gesamten Spielzeit von knapp 40 Minuten, dem routinierten Songwriting, dem soliden Spiel der Musiker und der frischen Herangehensweise wegen. Potenzial ist also mehr als genug da. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass OTHER WORLD dran bleiben – das Genre braucht dringend neue Impulse und die Kalifornier haben das Potenzial, diese setzen zu können.

In the aftermath of Roxy Music’s triumphant 50th-anniversary tour in 2022 and a series of reissues of both the band’s iconic catalog and his own solo ventures, Bryan Ferry returns with “Star,” his first new release in ten years. Teaming up with the creative talents of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, Ferry conjures a track that weaves a spell of hypnotic haze, drenched in dark synths and shadowed allure.

When Bryan Ferry announced his sprawling compilation Retrospectives last month, he kept his cards close. However, a press release reveals that Star began life as a sketch by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, whose fingerprints are all over the song’s haunting drum programming and basslines.

Featured on Ferry’s upcoming Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023, Star shimmers with sleek sophistication, a dark synth lullaby where Ferry’s subdued whisper floats like wisps of smoke over a bed of eerie electronics in conjunction with an icy spoken word performance from Glaswegian artist Amelia Barratt. The result is what Ferry’s representatives describe as “an anxious, darkly gleaming slab of pounding post-techno.

“Star is a collaboration with the painter and writer Amelia Barratt,” says Ferry. “A couple of years ago I helped her record an audiobook here in my studio. I was very impressed by her writing, and this is the first song we did together. I’m very excited about this new work – there’s a lot more to come.”

This song is all about subtle power—a quiet, relentless groove that slides into your psyche and lingers. The electronic rhythms pulse gently under Ferry’s barely-there vocals, creating a tension that never quite resolves. It’s a masterclass in understatement, a blend of polish and mystique, capturing a shadowy elegance.

“Star” embodies that tantalizing clash of eras, where Ferry’s signature suave delivery intersects with the raw, layred textures of Reznor and Ross’s electronic craft. The result is a track that dazzles in the dark, whose mood casts new light on familiar shadows.

Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023, an 81-track behemoth out October 25 via BMG Records, is the first to cover Ferry’s tenure with Island Records, Polydor, Virgin, E.G. Records, and BMG. The collection will be released as a 5-CD package accompanied by a 100-page hardback book.

An abridged edition, on double vinyl and single CD, will be released as The Best Of Bryan Ferry.

To borrow a line from the Dandy Warhols, we wish we were as cool as Kim Deal. 4AD’s Queen of alternative rock has finally pulled back the curtain on her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More, set to drop on November 22nd. Alongside the announcement comes Crystal Breath, a stomping, psychedelic single whose groove could easily be mistaken for a lost track from Beck’s Odelay era.

The song is a celebration of shaking off the shadows of personal demons. It’s a gritty journey of inner transformation, driven by a relentless beat. Despite wrestling with an inner “beast,” one finds strange comfort in the rhythm that leads them toward a new beginning. Imagery of shattered illusions and self-reinvention runs through the lyrics, capturing the tug-of-war between doubt and empowerment. Here, the beat isn’t just background noise; it’s the lifeline that pulls them through the darkness.

Crystal Breath started with an odd twist—it was first penned as a theme for a TV show about an aerobics instructor, but got kicked to the curb. Now, it’s found a new life, blending an uptempo drumbeat, quirky harmonica breakdowns, and distorted guitars with Kim Deal’s bubbly vocals. The result? A tune that’s as good for personal redemption as it is for powering through a tough day.

There’s a rhythm that keeps you on your toes, a sound that’s strangely uplifting, and Kim’s voice, always with a hint of irony, cutting through the noise. Turn the mundane into something more; she’s urging you to push through whatever’s in your way. Whether you’re chasing a new beginning or just trying to survive the daily grind, Crystal Breath gives you the power to keep on truckin’.

The video, directed by Alex Da Corte, is a cheeky, lo-fi affair with deliberately rough cuts and a glitchy Deal swaying back and forth in a loop. It’s like catching a flickering hologram in a TRON-like universe with a bad connection—strange, surreal, and somehow perfect. But there’s no mistaking it—Deal still has that spark, that edge, even in the digital chaos. She moves with the same magnetic pull, drawing you in, glitch or no glitch, reminding you why she’s still one of the coolest cats around.

The tracks on Nobody Loves You More stretch back to 2011, when Deal laid down Are You Mine? and Wish I Was, fresh off Pixies’ Lost Cities Tour. The latest sessions came in November 2022 with the late Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago.

Nobody Loves You More is a patchwork of past and present, stitched together by Deal’s unmistakable voice and the raw energy of those who’ve joined her along the way. The album boasts a lineup of heavy hitters, including Kelley Deal, Mando Lopez, Jim Macpherson, and Britt Walford, alongside Jack Lawrence from the Raconteurs, Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub), and Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan (Savages).

Love Ghost is an enigmatic indie rock outfit from Los Angeles. The project blends grunge, alternative rock, and post-punk with a dash of Soundcloud-era grit. Founded by Finnegan Bell, the band quickly turned heads with its raw energy, mature lyrics, and fearless approach to collaboration.

Swedish musician and producer Tim Skold—known for his work with KMFDM, Shotgun Messiah, and his solo ventures—has toured with the likes of Front Line Assembly and Motionless in White.

Now, Love Ghost and Skold have joined forces on a sludgy, tragic new single, Nightshade and Cocaine, a follow-up to their debut, Payback. This track crawls along with a dirge-like pace, driven by industrial rock rhythms and layered with the anguish of grunge and dark gothic elements. Heavy guitars and haunting pianos swirl in a heady mix inspired by altered states and witchcraft. It’s a taste of the dark  journey awaiting listeners on their debut album, Love Ghost x SKOLD, dropping November 22 via Metropolis Records.

The lyrics explore a cycle of self-destruction and inner torment, driven by a desperate need to feel something, anything, even if it’s pain. The speaker grapples with demons, using substances and reckless behavior to numb their anguish. They confront their darkest urges, torn between wanting to destroy themselves and finding some twisted form of redemption in their suffering.

“We are very excited to share…Nightshade and Cocaine,” says Skold. “It’s not easy picking singles from this album but this one is a favorite of mine because the dynamics, it’s like a musical roller coaster, the highs and lows take you for a ride. This is also something that is reflected in the lyrics with almost lightheartedly dealing with some very heavy subjects.”

“This is a sonic journey that touches on many topics such as personal introspection, losing and finding your soul, witchcraft, death, the afterlife, and even politics and war,” adds Bell. “Nightshade (also known as Belladona) is a flower that is intrinsically linked to witchcraft, particularly for flying, astral projection and as a symbol for death. This song is about altered states of mind and one’s psychology unraveling at the seams. This song is dynamic, unconventional and imaginative and is one of my favorites on the entire album.”

The video, directed by King Zabb, paints a picture of the band members caught in a psychic crossfire—under attack or under protection? That’s the real question. Erin Skold plays a mysterious fortune teller, credited as “The Self.” Maybe she’s a guardian angel, or maybe just the voice inside your head when you’re teetering on the brink, riding that razor’s edge of an altered state and heading straight for the rocks. She could be a warning or a whisper, the guide you need when you’re too far gone to see straight, trapped in a haze of your own making, fighting shadows that might just be your own.

“I still remember meeting Finn the first time because of his almost electric energy but it was my wife Erin’s idea that he and I should make music together,” says Skold on their collaboration. “I have worked with many different artists by now but this one is still a unique and refreshing experience…we came together with a special chemistry and I really feel that it is well represented in the music. Nightshade and Cocaine shows off an almost schizophrenic diversity that is a thread for the entire album.”

Raf Duran makes his entrance into the new interbellum, extending a warm electronic music embrace tinged with an undercurrent of icy peril. Now, following the release of “The New Thing,” “Erasing,” and “No Future,” the Dutch synthpop solo artist unveils his haunting fourth single, “Violence In Your Eyes.“

This song’s message cuts like broken glass, sharp and unforgiving, as it digs deep into the themes of jealousy, those foggy late nights, and the mornings after when things feel worse: shattered decorum, stained purity, blasphemous moments that leave bruises where you least expect them. The questions roll through your mind on repeat: What really went down? Who crossed the line? Was any of it worth it?

The answers are lost in a haze, replaced by a cold, clinging regret. Duran stalks the shadows of uncertainty, hinting at things better left buried, but knowing full well that the ghosts of those mistakes will haunt you just the same. Violence In Your Eyes veritably prowls, looking for its next victim.

Raf Duran, an Amsterdam bedroom producer, wrestles with his demons the only way he knows how—by losing himself in his music. He lays out his Weltschmerz in songs that tackle the big, bleak topics: AI, the specter of a Third World War, the Sixth Mass Extinction, and the looming Climate Crisis. And, of course, those age-old trifles—love, life, and death. Despite the gloomy undertones, the tracks, co-produced by Sebastiaan Dutilh (CUT_), turn dancing on the edge of disaster into a strangely delightful affair, echoing the vibes of Pet Shop Boys, Ladytron, late-era DEVO, and Kraftwerk.

The self-directed video matches the mood—a jittery mix that captures the raw intensity of jealousy, using vintage footage of human brain scans and early computer graphics. Found clips and home-shot scenes depict foggy memories of midnight disputes, shrouded in uncertainty over events that might never have occurred. It’s a visual journey through the fractured mind, where nothing is clear, but everything feels urgent.

Wie der letzte Vorab-Song “My Halo” und die erste Single “Outer Space” stammt die Nummer vom kommenden Album “Abyss”, das auf die Platte “Chapter III – Downfall” (2023) folgt und eine neue Ära einleiten soll:

ZEAL & ARDOR haben ein neues Video geteilt: “Kilonova” bei YouTube. Die Nummer folgt auf den Track “Hide In Shade”, ein Video gibt’s ebenso bei YouTube. Der Song stammt vom neuen Album “Greif“, das am 23. August 2024 erschienen ist.

„Wir wären nachlässig, würden wir keinen Song veröffentlichen, der so klingt wie der Sound, für den wir bekannt sind“, erklärt die Band. „Das tun wir mit „Hide In Shade“. Where the sun shows all, we hide in shade. Stay strange.”

Im Juni stellte Manuel Gagneux mit einem Video zu “Fend You Off” die zweite Single vor.

„Mit ‚Fend You Off’ kommt eine weitere Farbe auf die Leinwand“, sagt Bandleader Manuel Gagneux. „Inzwischen dürfte es offensichtlich sein, dass wir neue Seiten von uns zeigen. Das ist unser innerer Kern – ehrlich und verletzlich. Wir hoffen, es gefällt euch. Stay strange.”

Im Mai erschien “Clawing Out” eine zweite neue Single als Stream. Das Stück folgt auf den Song “To My Ilk”: Einen Visualizer-Clip kann man sich bei YouTube ansehen. Es handelt sich dabei um die erste Auskopplung aus “Greif”.

Zuvor teilte die Band Ende 2022 die beiden Singles “Firewake” sowie “Cinq”. Das letzte Album “Zeal & Ardor” erschien ebenfalls im Jahr 2022.

Die Modern / Alternative Metal-Band LEAGUE OF DISTORTION stellt ihren neuen Song “Galvanize” als Clip bei YouTube vor. Der Track stammt wie die vorherige Single “My Hate Will Go On” vom kommenden Album “Galvanize”, das auf das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum “League Of Distortion” (2022) folgt. Zu “My Hate Will Go On” äußert sich die Formation wie folgt:

“Ja, wir sind zurück mit einem neuen Song, der wie ein guter Schlag ins Gesicht ist. Provokativ und stark wie immer, mit einer tiefgreifenden Botschaft, die Ungerechtigkeit verarbeitet.

Wir haben hinter den Kulissen hart gearbeitet und sind stolz darauf, diesen neuen Song und das Video jetzt mit euch zu teilen. Dies ist ein Versprechen, dass wir nicht aufgeben werden und es wird bald mehr von LEAGUE OF DISTORTION geben.”
