Die Desert / Retro Rock-Band STÖNER hat mit “Hittin’ The Bitchin’ Switch” ein neues Live-Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Live-Album des kalifornischen Trios, das zuvor zwei Studioalben veröffentlicht hat.

“Hittin’ The Bitchin’ Switch” wurde im Altroquando in Treviso aufgenommen und wird am 11. Oktober 2024 via Heavy Psych Sounds erscheinen. Vorab gibt nach dem KYUSS-Cover “Green Machine” nun auch den Opener “A Million Beers” zu hören.

Das Team vom HEADBANGERS OPEN AIR hat die nächsten Bands für das HOA 2025 angekündigt. Das 27. Gartenfest findet vom 24.-26.07.2025  wie gewohnt auf dem Festivalgelände in Brande/Hörnerkirchen statt. Tickets, Camping-Tickets und Dixi-Reservierungen für 2025 sind ab Januar möglich. Weitere Infos gibt es wie immer auf der Homepage des HEADBANGERS OPEN AIR.

Neu angekündigt wurden nun ROSS THE BOSS mit einem All-Star-Lineup, es gibt MANOWAR-Klassiker von Ross Friedman, Kenny „Rhino“ Edwards (ex-MANOWAR), Marc Lopez (METAL CHURCH) sowie Dirk Schlächter (GAMMA RAY). Ebenfalls dabei sind KINGDOM OF MADNESS, die ihre 2024 ausgefallene Show nachholen und alte MAGNUM-Klassiker präsentieren.

Zuletzt bestätigt wurden DEMON, die Engländer waren 2013 zuletzt beim HOA. Ebenfalls dabei sind die Metal-Mädels von BURNING WITCHES, um dem Publikum einzuheizen. Ebenfalls angekündigt wurden die US-Metaller TRAUMA, sie spielen ihr erstes Album „Scratch And Scream“ von 1984, die Amis DESTRUCTOR schauen auch wieder vorbei.

Die Hamburger Metalhelden PARAGON feiern 35 Jahre Bandgeschichte und spielen ein Oldschool-Set.Die Düsseldorfer Thrasher ASSASSIN präsentieren ein 40-Years-Oldschool-Set mit Songs der ersten beiden Alben „The Upcoming Terror“ und „Interstellar Experience“.

Das Programm für das Warm Up steht bereits, es spielen auf der Backstagebühne am Donnerstag BLIZZARD HUNTER aus Peru, die Berliner Thrasher SPACE CHASER, die Schweden TYRANEX sowie die Kieler Crossover/Thrash-Band CATBREATH.

Die Crust / Hardcore-Band LIFE ABUSE hat mit “Systematization” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Albany, die Anfang der 2000er mit DEATHSQUAD zusammen musizierten.

In a landscape saturated with posturing and repetition, Brittany Bindrim, a lynchpin of Chicago’s Industrial Darkwave enclave with I: Scintilla, takes the plunge into deeper waters on her new remix EP, Sea Storm Maestros. A reimagining of tracks from her solo debut, Velella Velella, this EP isn’t just a collection of remixes—it’s a reshaping, a mutiny against the boundaries of the original compositions. Bindrim excavates the raw nerve endings of human consciousness and the fetid air of modern disillusionment, pulling them to the surface with an artistry that oscillates between tender introspection and abrasive corrosion.

If Velella Velella was an odyssey through the wreckage of self-awareness and societal rot, Sea Storm Maestros disassembles that ship and sets the parts adrift on new, choppier seas. These remixes don’t just tweak a beat or add a synth line; they deconstruct and rebuild, often thrusting the songs into entirely new dimensions—resulting into bold recontextualizations that allows each track to bloom, wilt, or mutate depending on the ears they fall upon.

Bindrim’s choice of remixers reads like a who’s who of electronic and industrial insurgents: Matt McJunkins (A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, The Beta Machine), Walter Flakus of Stabbing Westward, Daniel Myer (Haujobb, Covenant), Cyanotic, the boundless, and Greg Panciera. Each brings their own arsenal of textures and intentions, injecting new life and threat into the originals.

McJunkins’ reimagining of “Atlas” sets the tone, recasting the track’s brooding atmosphere with a cyberpunk urgency reminiscent of a ‘90s dystopia that never was. Walter Flakus’ “Stabwalt Remix” of “Cast” yanks the track into an abrasive industrial landscape, evoking a sonic tension somewhere between Bowie’s Outside and Reznor’s Downward Spiral. The transformation feels like a psychological scalpel peeling back layers, exposing the throbbing core beneath.

The Boundless Remix of “Volcano” takes a different approach, filtering the original through a Celtic-tinged techno lens—distant, buzzing, and eerily mechanized. It’s a remix that sits at the crossroads of rave euphoria and ritualistic dance. Meanwhile, Cyanotic’s version of “One Fixed Point” oozes with a nod to Ray of Light-era Madonna, yet somehow, it feels more sinister, like a reflection of glitter refracted through a dirty puddle in an alley.

The EP reaches a different height with Panciera’s take on “Obelisk,” where the lead single from Velella Velella is doused in alternative rock grit, layered in a way that bends the track’s original meaning towards something more primal and direct. The closer, Daniel Myer’s remix of “Currents,” bathes in an industrial melancholia that is sultry yet bruised, a fitting end to an EP that thrives on its ability to unsettle while drawing you in.

Sea Storm Maestros is more than a collection of remixes; it’s a dialogue between artists and sound, between what is known and what could be. It is an invitation to dive deeper into the storm and emerge either enlightened or engulfed.

“Wolkenschieber” haben IN EXTREMO ihr neues Album betitelt, das 13. Studioalbum der Mittelalterrock-Band erscheint am 6. September 2024 via Universal Music. Eine dritte Single mit dem Titel “Feine Seele” kann man jetzt als Clip bei YouTube sehen. Zu hören ist hier auch Oliver Satyr (FAUN) an der Nyckelharpa. Laut der Band geht es in dem Stück “um jemanden, der seine letzte Reise angetreten hat und darum, sich noch einmal an all die schönen Momente zu erinnern, die man zusammen verbracht hat. Gleichzeitig ist der Song aber auch eine Art ‘reflektierende Einkehr’ über Dinge die man im Leben getan oder gesagt hat.”

Mit “Ólafur” haben IN EXTREMO zuvor einen weiteren Track des Albums veröffentlicht. Das Lied basiert auf einer isländischen Skalden-Dichtung aus dem 8. Jahrhundert. Die damalig typische Tanzform „Vikivaki“, die sich zum Lied unter dem Volk in Skandinavien entwickelt hat, wurde zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts aus religiösen Gründen verboten.  Dr. Pymonte grub das Stück in einem Archiv aus.

Seit Mitte Juli kann man sich einen Videoclip zum Titeltrack “Wolkenschieber” ansehen.

Die “Wolkenschieber”-Tour startet Mitte November 2024, mit dabei sind KORPIKLAANI und RAUHBEIN.

Dass MONO INC. erst 2023 ein Live-Album veröffentlicht haben, ist nicht zu spüren. Im Gegenteil, das diesjährige Symphonic-Projekt “Symphonic Live – The Second Chapter” steigt direkt auf Platz fünf ein, wo “Live in Hamburg” letzten November mit der 14 zufrieden sein musste. Dicht dahinter landet die irische Post-Punk-Band FONTAINES D.C. mit “Romance” – das zweite Top-10-Album nach “Skinty Fia” (2022, # 5). Ihren Höhenflug fortsetzen können derweil ALL FOR METAL: Nach Rang 51 für das Debüt “Legends” (2023) kratzt “Gods Of Metal (Year Of The Dragon)” auf der Zwölf jetzt an den besten Zehn. Einen ähnlichen Satz nach vorne legen derweil NILE hin, deren “The Underworld Awaits Us All” (#20) nach “Vile Nilotic Rites” (2019, #54) ein ganzes Stück zulegen kann.

“Greif” der Avantgarde-Formation ZEAL & ARDOR beweist hingegen so etwas wie Konstanz: Platz 31 bewegt sich auf etwa dem gleichen Niveau wie das 2022 erschienene “Zeal & Ardor” (#27). Auch STAHLMANN legen nach “Quarz” (2021, #78) wieder ein wenig zu und landen mit “Phosphor” auf Position 50. “Vermillion”, das Solodebüt von EPICA-Sängerin SIMONE SIMONS, muss sich hingegen mit der 72 zufriedengeben.

Nicht unbedingt eine schwere, doch eine sehr langwierige Geburt: Die erste Single „Die For Me“ veröffentlichten ALLEVIATE noch mitten in der Pandemie. Über drei Jahre später folgt das Debütalbum „DMNS“, welchem dieser lange Prozess jedoch keinesfalls anzumerken ist. Weitgehend geschlossen und schlüssig präsentiert sich die Modern Metalcore-Formation, wenngleich dem engen Genre-Korsett hin und wieder prägnante Stilmittel zur Seite gestellt werden. Die punktuell Akzente setzenden Synthesizer in „Broken“ stechen etwa hervor, da sie der massiven Riff-Wand ein paar melodische Ankerpunkte schenken.

Anbrennen lassen ALLEVIATE in puncto Songwriting ohnehin nichts, denn was im Gesamtbild an Innovation fehlt, macht die Band mit Erfahrung schnell wieder wett. Hier zahlt es sich gewiss aus, dass alle fünf Musiker auch andere Projekte in der Pipeline haben. Für eine erfrischende Note sorgt hierbei OUR MIRAGE-Sänger Timo Bonner, dessen Clean-Vocals erstaunlich wandelbar ausfallen, poppige Bögen („Trying To Survive“) genauso versiert in Metalcore-Vokabular umsetzen wie die kraftvollen Spitzen in „My Demise“. Ob gefühlvolle Kopfstimme oder mit voller Power, den tief gestimmten Gitarren und seinem mächtig grollenden Kollegen Marius (BREAKDOWN AT TIFFANY’S) setzt der Gesang das nötige Maß an Feingefühl entgegen.

ALLEVIATE arrangieren auf “DMNS” bekannte Zutaten neu – das aber erstaunlich gut
Dadurch erfüllt „DMNS“ genug Leben, um nicht in unterkühlter Sterilität zu sterben. Denn humorlos und zermalmend geht es mitunter ebenfalls zu, wie der tongewordene Breakdown „Forevermore“ unterstreicht. „Gravity“ wiederum besticht mit seinem eingängigen Refrain im CURRENTS-Stil, wohingegen „Better“ brachialen Groove in der Strophe bald gegen feinfühligen, reflektierten Klargesang eintauscht.

Am beeindruckendsten ist jedoch, wie erstaunlich gut das Konzept aufgeht, obwohl ALLEVIATE eigentlich nur bekannte Zutaten neu arrangieren. So satt wir uns mittlerweile an Downtuned-Djent-Riffs gehört haben, erwischen wir uns dennoch und vor allem regelmäßig beim freudigen Mitnicken, ganz gleich ob der Track „Die For Me“ heißt oder die dezent symphonisch unterlegte Urgewalt von „Within Worlds“ über uns hereinbricht.

Am Ende des Tages spricht das ja nur für ALLEVIATE und deren Erstling: Was lange währt, wird endlich gut? Im Falle „DMNS“ und seinen drei Jahren Reifeprozess steckt wohl ein Körnchen Wahrheit in dieser abgedroschenen Floskel.

Die Brass Metal-Band OTTONE PESANTE hat mit “Scrolls of War” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Brassphemy Set in Stone” (2016), “Apocalips” (2018) und “DoomooD” (2020) das vierte Album der Italiener und folgt auf 2022er-EP “…and the Black Bells Rang“.

Ausgehend von einem Dokument aus dem 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr., das Ende der 1940er Jahre in Qumran (Palästina) gefunden wurde, die “Scrolls of War”, ist es das erste Album einer Konzepttrilogie über die Geschichte der Blasmusik.

“Vor langer Zeit gab es eine Zeit, in der Dürren, Hungersnöte, Erdbeben, Überschwemmungen und Epidemien innerhalb eines kurzen Zeitraums fast gleichzeitig auftraten und die Völker zur Migration zwangen, um zu überleben. Diese Massenbewegungen waren verzweifelt und führten zu grausamen und äußerst gewalttätigen Kriegen. Die Alten heiligten diese Kriege im Namen eines Gottes, der sie zum Sieg führte, und überlieferten die so genannten „Kriegsregeln“. Die Priester hatten die Aufgabe, die Bewegungen des Heeres mit dem Klang ihrer Trompeten und Hörner anzukündigen”, sagt die Band.

“Scrolls of War” wird am 18. Oktober 2024 via Aural Music erscheinen.

There’s a dirty deed happening on the ultimate battlefield, but here, the fat-cat players don’t bother with shields. They’ve sold Mother Earth for a pocketful of nothing, bribed silence with golden hush money. They see the end coming, but they don’t care. It’s all Learjets, luxury, and a cold hand on their heart. Emily Kinski’s Dead, the German-Swiss trio of Oliver Spring, René Ebner, and Thomas Kowa, plays their latest card in the life-or-death game of our existence with the gritty new single, Dancing On The Battlefield. The track throws a punch at the heart of a profit-driven mindset that sees environmental destruction as just another business venture. It’s a grim dialogue where one voice dismisses the planet’s doom as collateral damage on the path to greed, power, and pleasure. Dancing On The Battlefield is a sharp lament on a future being mortgaged and callously bartered for today’s luxuries, lost in the shuffle of indifference. Emily Kinski’s Dead calls it for what it is—a dance of denial.

“Dealing with climate change is so frustrating that we had to address it in Dancing On The Battlefield,” songwriter Thomas Kowa explains. “Of course, there’s no happy ending here either, but at least we slam a big FUCK OFF in the face of the fossil fuel industry.”

The video runs like a fever dream, cinematically conjuring the bleak worlds of 1984, Blade Runner, and The Hunger. A young woman steps into a stark Brutalist fortress, only to find herself face-to-face with a slick businessman grinning as he plays puppet master with the planet’s people, treating them like pawns in his perilous, profitable game. The visuals dig deep into the dystopian, with shadows and steel framing every move, every sinister smile. Each frame pulses with a grim tension. The stark imagery holds a mirror up to our modern madness, where human lives are bartered and sold, and where the devil isn’t a horned beast – but a mere mortal counting his riches amidst the smoking ashes of our shared home.

Große Freude für alle Liebhaber schräger, eingängiger Klänge: Wie aus einem Instagram-Post des Labels hervorgeht, erscheint mit “Yr Gwyddbwyll” (“Das Lebensbrett” oder – wie ein Kommentator bemerkt: “Das Schach” – auf Walisisch) am 27.09.2024 bereits das neue Album des eigenwilligen Mittelalter-Folk/Black-Metal-Projekts CURTA’N WALL auf Grime Stone Records.

“Yr Gwyddbwyll” wird zwölf neue Stücke und zwei Neuaufnahmen beinhalten, die Tracklist ist noch nicht bekannt. Erneut sind Sängerin und Dulcimer-Spielerin Elvya sowie viele weitere Gäste beteiligt.

Nach der „All We Do“-EP vor zwei Jahren melden sich LLOVESPELL mit einem „Doppelwumms“ bzw. gleich zwei neuen Alben zurück. „The Moon Has Nothing To Be Sad About“ gibt sich nach dem für LLOVESPELL typisch wohlig wattiert einlullenden Opener „Because Of Her Karma“ diesmal etwas sperriger, härter und widerborstiger. Das hatte aber auch die Eingangs erwähnte EP schon vermuten lassen und diese zum Teil aufpeitschende flotte Attitüde steht dem Duo inzwischen famos zu Gesicht. Ab „My Conscious Is Nil“ wird es deutlich tanzbar und die zunehmend deutschen Vocals passen dabei überraschend gut zu den nervös hektisch-pochenden Beats. „Tanzverbot“, „Mit Dir gegen alle“, „Niemand“ und „Auf die Strasse“ könnten irgendwie genauso Titelnamen der DAF sein, jedoch durch die immer variabler werdenden Vokals von Mandie K. bleibt es LLOVESPELL und so weiterhin jeder Song ein Lovesong! Ein wirklich herrlich elektrisch berauschendes Album und ganz große Empfehlung von mir dafür!

Parallel dazu erhältlich ist mit „The Broken Heart Department“ ein instrumentales Ambient-Album, welches wesentlich gedämpfter, jedoch immer noch leicht rhythmisch daher kommt. Hier gibt es 9 mal viel Geknister & Gerausche, wie sakrale und leicht indische Tantra-Atmosphäre, was neben den dezenten Klavieranschlägen, an den Sitar ähnlichen verwendeten Saiten-Klängen liegen mag. Gelungener Doppel-Schlag, wovon „The Moon Has Nothing To Be Sad About“ es sicher in meine Top 10 für 2024 schafft! Beide Alben sind in einer kleinen physischen Edition von je 50 Exemplaren als CD-R in Karton-Foldout-Covern erhältlich und als kostenpflichtiger Download über Bandcamp sowieso. (Marco Fiebag)

A goth-adjacent trio that moves deftly between post-punk’s raw urgency and coldwave’s icy detachment, the band—comprised of Chuck Rosencrans, Nathan Oestry, and Matt Weiner (aka TWINS)—crafts music through a collaborative, unflinching approach to songwriting, capturing a culture steeped in digital surveillance and existential angst. Their name, drawn from a lens adapter that merges foreground and background, serves as a fitting metaphor for their sound—a cinematic tension that blurs the lines between the immediate and the distant, reminiscent of the haunting disorientation of films like The Swimmer (1968). This imagery finds a direct reference in their aesthetic, with an iconic frame from the film adorning their tour shirts, distilling the push and pull of modern existence into something profoundly resonant and strangely beautiful.

Matt Weiner’s vocals balance between vibey and gloomy, set against synths that provide a subtly dreamy yet unsettling backdrop. Rosencrans’ melodic guitars anchor the haze, while the bass thrums with a Hook-esque darkness. Crisp drum programming adds an aggressive punch, crafting dense, concise arrangements that deliver tight, immersive mixes with haunting precision. Echoes of Joy Division, The Sisters of Mercy, Modern English, Bauhaus, and The Damned can be felt throughout their sound.

As we continue to wait for their highly anticipated fourteenth studio album, Songs of a Lost World—the long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s 4:13 Dream—fans now have the opportunity to hear two tracks from the upcoming album as performed during The Cure’s 2023 world tour. Enter Novembre—Live in France 2022, a double A-side 12” single pressed on eco-friendly vinyl—a result of a collaboration that aims to strike a louder, deeper chord. The release, limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies, is more than just another collector’s item; it’s a call to arms. Featuring live renditions of “And Nothing is Forever” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye,” recorded during their 2022 performances in France, the record is set to drop on October 1st, 2024.





What sets this release apart is its ecological intent. All net profits from the sales will be donated to EarthPercent, a forward-thinking charity that channels funds to the front lines of the climate and biodiversity crisis. Founded by industry heavyweights, EarthPercent’s ethos is to help artists become patrons of the planet’s future. For The Cure, this release is more than just another notch on their musical belt; it’s a way of turning their creativity into currency for change.

The process behind the vinyl is as striking as its purpose. Naked Record Club’s innovative approach involves an injection-moulding machine that slashes electricity usage by 80-90% compared to traditional vinyl pressing methods. It’s a shift away from the toxic, energy-intensive norms of the industry, one that was reportedly brought to the attention of The Cure’s Robert Smith by the band’s ever-passionate fanbase—a further testament to the symbiotic relationship between the band and their audience.

The eco-friendly vinyl is slick and transparent black and available for pre-order from August 30th at 2 pm BST. For the more devout among us, 100 ultra-limited copies, personally signed by Smith himself, will also be available for €250. All proceeds will support EarthPercent’s mission. It’s a chance to possess a slice of history while planting a stake in the future.

Longing is that exquisite torment—caught in the no-man’s-land between hope and heartbreak. It’s grasping at shadows of something once radiant, only to feel it slip away like water through your hands. The mind spins its tales of what might have been, while the heart stubbornly refuses to release its grip on a fading dream. It’s that cruel balance of wanting what’s gone and knowing that each grasp only deepens the ache. You find yourself holding onto a fleeting moment, even as it dissolves, unable to decide whether to mourn its loss or cherish its memory just a little longer.

The new single from Skelesys, Golden Eyes, wraps its grief around this particular limbo. The lyrics express a longing for a past love and the bittersweet memories that remain. The song’s protagonist recalls cherished moments and the feeling of both excitement and fear of trying again. They wonder if they’ll ever see the “golden eyes” of their lost love again, grappling with the pain of a final goodbye under a blue moon and the lingering emotional wound.

“Golden Eyes is a journey through the fragile moments where love and loss intertwine,” says the artist. “It’s a story of longing, of the bittersweet dance between hope and heartbreak. There’s hope and nostalgia in the melody, and I think people can relate to that feeling of holding on to something beautiful, even as it slips away.”

Golden Eyes spins a smoky spell, a mix of 80s post-punk punch, synth-pop swagger, and goth’s cool, shadowy charm, with a side of 90s alt-rock grit. It channels the dark pulse of Depeche Mode’s Black Celebration with a hint of Bauhaus’ bleak beauty, The The’s sharp-eyed insight, and the haunted howl of The Church. The melancholic melody lingers like a secret you shouldn’t have heard, a hook that hits with the sharpness of a well-honed blade. A rare find, it rolls in with the brightness of a summer anthem, but there’s a bite beneath—a bittersweet sting that lingers. Golden Eyes feels like a late-night confession; something that pulls you in close, even as it leaves you guessing, craving that next taste of trouble.

Es gibt Alben, die liebt man allein schon wegen des Artworks. “Abstieg in die Traumkammer” bzw. “Katabasis Into The Abaton” von GRENDEL’S SYSTER ziert ein Eichhörnchen auf einem Totenschädel, kämpferisch einen Knochen schwingend. Pilze gibt’s auch, Eulen seh ich null, aber dafür einen anderen schrägen Vogel. Und für eben solche machen GRENDEL’S SYSTER ja auch Musik, nämlich Folk Trad Metal/Hard Rock in bester SLOUGH-FEG-Tradition. Mit volle Lotte Mittelalter-Lyrics und Melodien, die damals mit Sicherheit niemand so gesungen hat, vorgetragen in purer Seriosität und aus vollem Halse. Und da die Band diesmal auch einen Bass dabei hat, ist das Ergebnis ganz schön geil!

Neun Lieder im etwas zu klarem, aber immer noch druckvollem Sound legen GRENDEL’S SYSTER hier vor. Wer eine Lust an verspielter deutscher Sprache hat, wird mit Liedern wie “Eberzahnhelm”, “Nachteulenschnabel” und der putzigen Ballade “Güldenes Schlüsselein (klemmt)” alles andere als enttäuscht, so dass die englischsprachigen Versionen gar nicht nötig sind, um das Album zu genießen. Aber die gibt es eben auch noch. Ich hatte erst Angst, dass die Aussprache des Englischen gar zu denglisch daher kommen würde, so war doch diese Angst ganz unbegründet. Auch und vielleicht gerade auf Englisch funktionieren die Lieder hervorragend, je nachdem ob man es eher verschrobener (deutsch) oder eher traditioneller (englisch) mag.

Das liegt selbstverständlich in erster Linie an der Musik. Man spürt, dass die Band nicht erst seit gestern zusammen Musik macht. Man hört die gute alte Epic-Metal-Schule in jedem Lick und jedem Riff, und Sängerin Caros Stimme ist deutlich gereift und trifft kraftvoll (fast) jeden Ton, ohne dabei eine perfekte Allerweltsstimme zu haben. Es ist ja sowieso dieses “(fast)”, das so manchem Connaisseur metallischer Klangkunst erst den letzten Kick gibt. Und ich bin da keine Ausnahme und unterstütze Caros größten Fan, Sarah von SMOULDER, wenn sie alle Sängerinnen und Sänger dazu ermutigt, das Besondere, Komische, Einzigartige in ihren Stimmen selbstbewusst in den Vordergrund zu stellen.

Das gilt natürlich auch für GRENDEL’S SYSTER als Ganzes: Die scheren sich offenbar einen Dreck um irgendeine Form von Image, lassen die Musik für sich sprechen, ohne dabei auch nur irgendwie billig oder platt zu klingen. Und scheinen auch sonst wirklich sympathisch und nahbar zu sein. Insofern dürfensich alle kauzigen Kauz-Metal-Liebhaber-Käuze aus Kauzhausen über diesen “Abstieg in die Traumkammer” ausgiebig freuen!

Ihre musikalische Vielseitigkeit zeigen In Extremo mit der tief berührenden Ballade „Feine Seele“ und unterstreichen dies auch durch die Mitwirkung eines besonderen Gastes: Oliver Satyr, einer der Köpfe der Band Faun, die zu den wichtigsten Vertretern einer modernen Interpretation historischer, folkloreorientierter Tonkunst gehören. Mit seiner 16-saitigen Nyckelharpa, einem mittelalterliche Traditionsinstrument, verleiht er dieser kraftvollen Ballade Augenblicke berührender Zärtlichkeit. „In dem Text geht es um jemanden, der seine letzte Reise angetreten hat und darum, sich noch einmal an all die schönen Momente zu erinnern, die man zusammen verbracht hat“, erklärt die Band. „Mit Oliver verbindet uns eine lange Geschichte. Bei einer Show in Merseburg haben wir ihn einfach gefragt, ob er nicht auf dem Stück mitspielen wollte. Es war für ihn überhaupt keine Frage und wir sind sehr dankbar dafür“.

Dass man Todd Jones keine Streichhölzer in die Hand drücken darf, ist seit NAILS’ Debütalbum „Unsilent Death“ aus dem Jahr 2010 allen Freund*innen beherzten Lärms bekannt. Für sein viertes Album „Every Bridge Burning“ wirft Jones nun wieder mit Brandsätzen um sich und brennt alle Brücken ab, die er finden kann. Das überrascht freilich nicht. NAILS standen seit ihrer ersten Bandprobe für ein Maximum an Aggression, und ich meine damit M-A-X-I-M-U-M. Doch schon ihr drittes Album „You Will Never Be One Of Us“ zeigte auf, dass sich der Mix aus Grindcore und Hardcore schnell erschöpft. Und doch: „Abandon All Life“ ist die Platte, die beim Verfasser läuft, wenn der H-A-S-S zu übermächtig wird. Nur um dann festzustellen, dass das mit dem Wutabbau nicht zu 100% funktioniert hat.

Ob Todd Jones nun auch eine Sinnkrise wegen ausbleibender Katharsis hatte, oder ob er mit seinem instabilen Line-Up seit 2016 so beschäftigt war, sei an dieser Stelle egal. Acht Jahre nach dem letzten Album und fünf Jahre nach der letzten Zwei-Track-Single hat sich für NAILS reichlich wenig geändert. Jones speit nach wie vor Gift und Galle, die zehn Songs kommen insgesamt auf eine Spielzeit von weniger als 20 Minuten, Riffs und Drumming sind erbarmungslos. Das Geschrei ist beinahe absurd hysterisch und vom Partner in Crime Kurt Ballou wie üblich aufs Rabiateste in Szene gesetzt.

Und doch erlauben sich NAILS kleinere Ausbrüche aus dem brutalen Band-Standard, den sie beinahe zu routiniert runterzocken. Neben den typischen, chaotischen, aber trotzdem primitiven Riffs haben NAILS ein paar eingängige, crunchy Parts parat, die dem Titeltrack, dem spaßig-thrashigen „Give Me The Painkiller“ oder dem wuchtigen „I Can’t Turn It Off“ ungemein guttun. Dass „Every Bridge Burning“ nicht nur Vollgas kann, sondern auch auf Tempowechsel und Grooves setzt, ist äußerst wohltuend. Doch dadurch fällt auch auf, dass Songs, die eben keine kurzen Aha-Momente besitzen, mit einer gewissen Müßigkeit zu kämpfen haben, wie „Imposing Will“ und „Made Up In Your Mind“ zeigen.

„Every Bridge Burning“ ist so etwas wie eine Zwitterstellung in der Geschichte von NAILS. Einerseits wirken sie nach der langen Pause deutlich frischer und zwingender als auf „You Will Never Be One Of Us“, andererseits ist diese konsequente Negierung einer jeden Entwicklung auch bis zu einem gewissen Teil Selbstpersiflage. Es gibt zahllose Beispiele extremer Bands, die in Würde altern. Todd Jones hingegen entscheidet sich dafür, weiterhin so humor- und kopflos zu agieren wie vor fünfzehn Jahren und gibt damit, vor allem stimmlich, ein Bild ab, wie Timo Boll bei den Olympischen Spielen 2024. Aber der gute Mann kann eben nicht anders, er sagt es ja selbst in „I Can’t Turn It Off“. Überhaupt: Dass NAILS im Grunde die One-Man-Show eines Hitzkopfs ist, wird deutlich, ruft man sich ins Gedächtnis, dass eine völlig neue Backing-Band hier spielt – und es fällt überhaupt nicht auf. Beim Abbrennen von Brücken macht Jones eben keine halben Sachen.

Insgesamt ist „Every Bridge Burning“ also ein solider Genrebeitrag mit kleineren Schwächen und verkrampfter Attitüde, aber wieder deutlich besser als das 2016er Album. Nur eben auch kein neuer Instant-Klassiker wie „Abandon All Life“. Dass in den vergangenen Jahren Bands wie END an NAILS vorbeigezogen sind, lässt sich außerdem nicht leugnen. Wer es sich aber brutal, kompakt und wirkungsvoll besorgen will, darf sich diesen Quickie durchaus vormerken.

In 1985, the embers of Bauhaus hadn’t yet cooled before Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins launched something new from the wreckage— the alternative rock powerhouse Love and Rockets. Named after the Hernandez brothers’ cutting-edge underground comic, the trio sought to carve out a space where the visceral punch of post-punk could dance with something more expansive, more melodically unshackled. Here were veterans of the gothic rock milieu stepping into the sunlight—with a sound that would push the boundaries of what rock and roll could be. Over the course of thirteen years and seven albums, Love and Rockets alchemized post-punk’s raw nerve with an often surprisingly infectious blend of pop, psychedelia, and introspective noir.

By the time their self-titled fourth album dropped in 1989, Love and Rockets had already charted a course through the deepest valleys of the alternative landscape. But this record marked a critical juncture. Anchored by the inescapably sultry single “So Alive,” a track that thrums with a slow-burning, seductive swagger, the band broke the seal on the mainstream—without forsaking their subterranean roots. The song’s minimalist yet hypnotic allure has lost none of its potency over the decades, proving that Love and Rockets knew the secret formula to staying both timeless and timely.

Coinciding with the 35th anniversary of So Alive, Love and Rockets announce the release of a video for D.J. K’s Vibrant Nu Disco Single Edit from the limited-edition remix EP.

This version amps up the hypnotic mantra of the familiar original into a bona fide club hit, with a peppy disco backbeat and bizarre spacey synth atmospherics.

“Five months in the making, filmmaker Ava Green has put forth this beautiful, psychedelic, artistic adventure of a music video (three thumbs up band approved),” said D.J. K of the video. “The storyline is interpretive.  It ties together the past So Alive video concept with a new ‘rebirth’ approach to the new version.”

The choreography of the angelic figure is reminiscent of the famous Butterfly and Serpentine dances of Loïe Fuller, popularized in the 1890s.Hop on the party bus and get those feet tapping all the way to the Bacchanal.
