This November, in partnership with Los Angeles underground mainstay Lethal Amounts, Modernwav transcends the usual with its inaugural two-day festival in San Diego, set to become a keystone of the city’s underground nightlife. From November 22-23, a congregation of the eclectic and electric will gather, headlined by genre stalwarts like TR/ST and IAMX, alongside rising provocateurs Spike Hellis, Louisahhh, Matte Blvck, Nox Novacula, Die Sexual, and Void Palace. Modernwav has long been the architect of San Diego’s alternative nightlife, seamlessly merging bands, kink performers, and DJs into a singular, hedonistic experience. Now, it broadens its scope, amplifying its vision with this festival debut—a spectacle that promises to be more than just its lineup.

The festivities deepen with DJ sets from Soft Faith, whose deft hands will guide the faithful through waves of dark euphoria, while Domina Death and Gisella Thorn will command the room with their striking presence. It’s this kind of synergy—where sound and spectacle entwine—that defines Modernwav.

TR/ST (Robert Alfons) has danced deftly around the edges of the underground, evolving his project into a defining force within the dark dance scene. With the release of Joyland in 2014 and the two-part The Destroyer in 2019, Alfons has proven himself a master of balancing the eerie and the anthemic. His music is a fragile dance between melancholy and ecstasy, a sonic landscape where one can easily get lost and never wish to be found.

IAMX is the solo vehicle of Chris Corner (formerly of Sneaker Pimps), known for his intoxicating blend of electronic, alternative, and dark pop. Corner’s performances are intense theatrical journeys—deeply visceral, unapologetically raw. His music is an exploration of identity, sexuality, and self-destruction, pulling listeners into a cinematic universe where every beat is a pulse, every lyric a confession.

Spike Hellis channels the ferocity of post-punk and the harsh textures of industrial and EBM into a pulsing sonic barrage. Their music is a jagged exploration of urban despair and existential dread, a fitting soundtrack for wandering through the concrete labyrinths of a crumbling metropolis. The intensity of their live performances is not for the faint-hearted; it’s an immersion in wit, grit, and gloom, where the boundary between artist and audience collapses in a shared moment of raw catharsis.

Louisahhh brings her fiery fusion of techno and punk to the stage, a hurricane of sound and fury. Her sets are a visceral experience, fusing punishing beats with soul-stirring vocals that cut through the noise like a knife through fog. She is both shaman and warrior, leading her followers through a high-energy ritual of sound and movement that leaves no one untouched.

Matte Blvck conjures a potent blend of post-punk atmospheres and industrial rhythms, threading the needle between dark introspection and raw power. Their sound is a modern take on the old guard—a brooding symphony that speaks to both the past and the future.

Nox Novacula treads the deathrock line with a deep understanding of both its roots and its potential. Their songs are a profound journey into the abyss, where dark melodies intertwine with pounding electronic beats to create a haunting exploration of human frailty and inner turmoil.

Die Sexual, the L.A.-based duo of Rosselinni and Anton Floriano, delve deep into a heady mix of EBM, techno, and electropop. Their sound is drenched in sensuality and tension, a hypnotic dance between desire and despair that plays out over throbbing analog synths and sultry vocals.

Void Palace, another standout from L.A., embraces the avant-garde with their eclectic fusion of darkwave and industrial. Their music is a journey through eerie landscapes, where driving beats and haunting synths evoke both dread and fascination.

Modernwav’s festival debut is set to be an immersive experience—a collision of sounds, sights, and sensations that promises to push the limits of what an alternative event can be. It’s not just about the music; it’s about the movement, the moment, the memory.

Cruc1fy, hailing from North Carolina, is one more of the unexpected and unique dark music alchemists to come out recently in the burgeoning underground darkwave scene.  Forged in the cauldron of Detroit’s industrial backstreets, his oeuvre is a potent melange of Midwest nü-metal, darkwave, and witch house. Each track he has cut feels like a twisted tale from the frontlines of a fractured reality, where tragedy, twisted love, and dark fantasy reign. With his songs, Cruc1fy crafts an ominous world that grips like an icy hand that just won’t let go.

The mood on his latest album, L1feless x B3autiful is dense and immersive, laced with haunting atmospheres and rhythmic gravitas that echo the grit and defiance of Detroit itself. Cruc1fy’s vocal delivery oscillates between ghostly chants, jagged invocations, and the occasional raw scream—like incantations echoing through a darkened warehouse at 3 a.m. His music doesn’t bow to the shadows; it revels in them, carrying the weight of the city’s storied resilience. Drawing parallels to the likes of Twin Tribes, Deftones, and Mareux, while brushing shoulders with the esoteric Grizz, Darkways, and Moonvampire, Cruc1fy forges his own distinct corner within the darkwave terrain, channeling something familiar yet deeply, disturbingly unique.

This is an album that plunges headlong into the psychological depths, evoking a sense of menace like a score for a lost giallo about a murderer psyching himself up in a candle-lit basement. Take the opener, L1F3LESS—a shoegaze-tinged alt-rock number that thrusts you into a suffocating atmosphere. The song carries an existential tension that sits uneasily between life’s feral gasp for air and the alluring quiet of oblivion.

The darkly buoyant PR3Y veers into post-punk territory, mixing a pulsating rhythm with screeches that bleed hardcore aggression. The track’s interplay between control and submission is rendered with a visceral intensity—Oli Oxen’s guest vocals add a chilling layer to this grim ballet, where every whispered word could either be a promise or a threat. It’s the sound of dominance and desire clashing in a blood-streaked waltz, leaving a mark that’s as indelible as it is unsettling.

Cruc1fy doesn’t shy away from exploring the darker corners of human desire. FRAG1L3 melds gothic rock and modern darkwave with razor-sharp pop hooks to explore the obsessive dance of attraction and contempt. The track revels in a perverse fascination with fragility—the protagonist savors their partner’s weaknesses while simultaneously mocking them, ensnared in a toxic loop of control and disdain.

Then there’s CHA1NSAW, which opens with a dreamy wash of guitars and synth before taking a sharp turn into raw emo screeches. It embodies a violent collision between allure and abhorrence, capturing the chaotic pull of a relationship that’s as destructive as it is consuming. The track feels like a love letter drenched in venom, the kind that you can’t quite burn without a part of yourself going up in flames with it.

On PL4Y, the mood shifts to a more danceable darkwave vibe, with electro-synthpop elements that paint a neon-lit picture of manipulation and control on a battlefield of love and lust. The track twists passion into a perverse game where both pain and pleasure serve as weapons.

PARAS1T3 takes the listener deeper into Cruc1fy’s twisted labyrinth, a modern darkwave track with sci-fi synth flourishes that harken back to ’90s futurepop. Oli Oxen returns, delivering vocals that cut like ice through the murk of obsession, where love and control are locked in a grim embrace. This track teeters on the precipice of devotion and destruction, where every beat feels like another step into madness.

Closing with V1OL3NCE, Cruc1fy taps into an early 2000s electroclash aesthetic, setting crystalline feminine vocals against a backdrop of demonic whispers and dark, glitchy rhythms. It’s a descent into the abyss where desire morphs into something predatory, a yearning for a partner in crime to burn the world down in one last apocalyptic act.

With L1feless x B3autiful, Cruc1fy has laid bare a vision that is as seductive as it is savage.

Dupouy and bolstered by bassist/keyboardist A. Tomeno, stirs a storm of sound blending post-punk and shoegaze with a touch of dark electro. Their latest track is a stroll through a dreamscape, where reverberated guitars and delay-soaked melodies collide, crafting a bittersweet ballet of mood and memory.

With Depression Dance, DRØME dives into a duality of despair and delight. The song spins tales from travels, merging haunting harmonies with hauntingly catchy tunes. Here, dance and movement become more than mere motions—they’re manoeuvres against melancholy, a rhythmic rebellion against the relentless grip of gloom. Their sound fits perfectly together in a playlist with bands such as A Place to Bury Strangers, DIIV, Slowdive, and Soviet Soviet.

Copenhagen’s chameleonic provocateur, Chopper—the brainchild of Jonatan K. Magnussen from The Love Coffin—is set to unleash his sophomore full-length, Shock Pop – The Album, this November. With his latest single and video, “Wet Hot Summer,” Chopper crafts a sonic patchwork that pays homage while defiantly reinventing itself, weaving together post-punk’s urgency and dance-pop’s polished allure into a visceral, pulsating concoction. Lurking in the darkwave’s shadowy corners, glittering with glam rock excess, and shot through with the frenetic fervor of Madchester and industrial clatter, Chopper offers a kaleidoscope of sounds. It’s a feverish trip for fans of Cold Cave’s brooding ballads, the rowdy grooves of Happy Mondays, and Gary Numan’s digital dystopias—a dynamic dose for those daring enough to delve into it.

“Wet Hot Summer” sketches a brief, bittersweet daydream—a grasp for eternity against the fleeting heat of summer’s twilight. Switzerland’s Future Faces step into the stark glare of post-punk’s neon afterglow, reviving the austere edge of the ’80s with a modern twist on synth-driven cold wave’s bone-chilling ambience. Since their 2017 debut, they’ve carved out a niche with three personal albums and performances pulsing with rare intensity. This multi-instrumentalist collective stands out for its daring dedication, defying the stale standards of a bygone productivity. Their tunes strike a hedonistic chord against today’s austerity, coaxing listeners to revel amid the ruins of our reality. I Kiedys Ja (And Once I) marks a monumental move for Future Faces, diving deep into the murky waters of memory and emotional alienation. Die Progressive Death Metal-Band VILE RITES hat mit “Only Silence Follows” den Opener ihres neuen Albums “Senescence” als Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Zuvor ist der Song “Senescent“erschienen.

“Die Inspiration für ‘Senescent’, wie auch das allgemeine Thema des Albums, kam vom Lebenszyklus des Kraken”, erklärt Sänger Alex Miletich. “Für diejenigen, die es vielleicht nicht wissen: Kraken werden ohne elterliche Führung geboren – zumindest soweit wir wissen – und sind gezwungen, allein durch die Gewässer zu wandern. Sobald sie geschlechtsreif sind und einen Partner gefunden haben, legt das Weibchen ihre Eier und bleibt bei ihnen, um sie zu schützen und zu pflegen, bis sie schlüpfen, wobei sie verhungert und schließlich stirbt, um neues Leben zu schaffen. Dies ist nicht nur ein tiefgründiges Symbol für die Opfer, die Mütter bringen, um neues Leben zu schaffen, sondern auch für den endlosen Kreislauf von Tod und Wiedergeburt im Allgemeinen. Wir werden mit nichts als einem Gefäß in die Welt geboren, und wir hinterlassen nur das Erbe dessen, was wir geschaffen haben.”

“Senescence” wurde von Greg Wilkinson (AUTOPSY) in den Earhammer Studios produziert und ist am 16. August 2024 via Carbonized Records erschienen. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner, die 2022 mit der EP “The Ageless” debütierten und sich von Ereignissen in der Natur inspirieren lassen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Justyna Koziczak. Vorab gab es auch den Track “Shiftless Wanderings” zu hören.

“”Shiftless Wanderings” ist inspiriert von der Idee des Winterschlafs und des Rückzugs nach innen, um der Brutalität und Härte der Realität und der Welt zu entkommen”, erklärt Gitarrist und Sänger Alex Miletich. “Wenn ein Tier in freier Wildbahn in den Winterschlaf geht, hat es die Wahl zwischen den rauen Elementen oder dem monatelangen einsamen Hungertod. Um zu überleben, müssen sie ein Gleichgewicht zwischen beiden Möglichkeiten finden. Dieser Gedanke des Eskapismus gilt auch für uns Menschen, vor allem in den beispiellosen Zeiten, in denen wir heute leben. Auch wenn wir uns den Realitäten der realen Welt stellen müssen, ist es manchmal notwendig, sich um unserer eigenen Gesundheit willen zurückzuziehen. Man muss dasselbe Gleichgewicht finden wie das wilde Tier, um sowohl ein beitragendes Mitglied der Gesellschaft zu sein als auch mit der abscheulichen Brutalität und kalten Apathie fertig zu werden, die unsere Gesellschaft aufrechterhält.”

Aber ihr wisst ja, dass das in unserem Fall nicht passieren wird! Dennoch möchte ich, dass die Leute sich das Ganze anhören. Unsere liebenden Fans werden sagen, dass sie unglaublich sei. Trotzdem möchte ich nicht wie ein Verkäufer oder gar ein egozentrisches Arschloch wirken, das denkt, dass es wie Midas alles zu Gold werden lässt (wobei…?). Dazu gesellt sich eine enorm ausgeprägte Form angeborener schwedischer Bescheidenheit, die mit dem Hochstaplersyndrom liebäugelt. Was sage ich also? ‚§3’ ist ab sofort verfügbar!”

Die Modern Metal / Metalcore-Band THECITYISOURS präsentiert ihre neue Single “Psycho” mit einem Musikvideo bei YouTube. Der Track stammt vom kommenden Album “Will You Still Love Me”, das die Formation bereits mit einem weiteren Preview-Stück vorgestellt hat: “In The Dark” in Bild und Ton bei YouTube. Auch zu “Shame” gibt es einen Videoclip bei YouTube.

“Will You Still Love Me?” erscheint am 31. Januar 2025 via Arising Empire auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Ende 2024 und Anfang 2025 gehen THECITYISOURS im Vorprogramm von SELF DECEPTION auf Tour (Termine s. unten).

Zuvor teilte die Gruppe im Oktober 2022 den Standalone-Track “Alive” als Musikvideo bei YouTube. Die Band hat über den Song Folgendes zu sagen:

In ‘Alive’ geht es darum, die Dämonen, die wir in unserem Leben erlebt haben, anzuerkennen und aktiv unsere Denkweise zu ändern, um sie in die Vergangenheit zu verbannen und mit einer neuen Lebenseinstellung vorwärts zu gehen. Als Band haben wir in den letzten Jahren so viele Veränderungen erlebt, dass es manchmal schwierig war, sich auf den vor uns liegenden Weg zu konzentrieren.

Wir haben viel darüber gesprochen, warum wir uns überhaupt in die Musik verliebt haben, und haben über Platten gesprochen, die uns etwas fühlen ließen – von harten Metal-Platten bis hin zu Pop-Klassikern aus den 90ern und allem, was dazwischen liegt. Wir stellten uns der Herausforderung, Elemente von so vielen dieser Platten wie möglich in einem Song zu kombinieren, um uns von den Schranken unserer Vergangenheit zu befreien und die neue Ära von THECITYISOURS voll und ganz zu genießen. Wir glauben fest daran, dass jeder in der Lage sein sollte, sich so auszudrücken, wie er möchte, unabhängig von Rasse, Geschlecht, Glaube, Sexualität oder anderen Etiketten, die die Gesellschaft uns aufdrücken möchte.

Munich’s Rue Oberkampf returns, prowling the shadowy corners of the electronic music scene with their latest single, “I Won’t Surrender,” heralding the arrival of their much-anticipated EP, Essenz. The duo—comprising the enigmatic DJ and producer pair Julia de Jouy and Oliver Maier—has crafted a track that intertwines beguiling beats with melodies that whisper like a lover’s confession in a deserted alley.

“I Won’t Surrender” is a masterclass in Rue Oberkampf’s unique sonic alchemy—a volatile mix of industrial grit, techno pulse, and darkwave melancholy that plunges listeners into a twilight realm of desire and despair. De Jouy’s vocals, ethereal and haunting, glide over brooding synths and relentless rhythms, spinning tales that speak to the soul’s hidden recesses. Each note is a step deeper into their labyrinth, a place where secrets are both currency and curse.

The accompanying music video captures this vibe in full gothic splendor. Set in an abandoned London church, Rue Oberkampf takes center stage amid a striking light pyramid that stands ominously at the altar. The spectral atmosphere is heightened by a cast of alternative dancers, including the likes of the ethereal Lith Li and MØNSTER QUEEN’s queer goth curators, alongside Emmi Aylmer and Greta Gamma. The choreography unfolds like a fever dream amid a haze of projected abstract forms—mist, liquid, and shadow—under the eerie direction of Simone Pellegrini, who conjures a visual aesthetic reminiscent of The Crow and Sleepy Hollow, where reality blurs with the surreal.

But there’s more beneath the surface. The single also comes with a “Brutal Edit”—a reimagined, harder-hitting version that turns up the intensity with booming bass and razor-sharp percussion. It’s a stark contrast to the original but remains in perfect harmony with the duo’s dark, alluring aesthetic.

Ich hatte ja erst Anfang des Jahres mit VERTILIZAR eine hoffnungsvolle Newcomer-Alternative Metal-Band aus Österreich vorgestellt, der jetzt mit GYFTH gleich eine weitere aus ähnlichen Genre-Gefilden folgt. GYFTH aus der Alpenrepublik wildern ebenso in Post New Metal- und Hardcore-Gefilden, abgeschmeckt durch eine Prise Punk und deutschsprachigen Gesang mit dem für die Region Wien/Linz typischen Zungenschlag. Dieser Gesang ist dann von dermaßen wütend-keifenden Form, dass dieser sogar in finstere Black Metal-Abgründe stürzt und in manchen Momenten fast schon etwas an KNORKATOR erinnert. Passend zum wütenden Gesang überstürzen sich Gitarre, Bass und Drums dazu im Wettstreit für verbrannte Erde in halsbrecherischen Geschwindigkeit. Dazwischen blitzen jedoch immer wieder kleine melodische Lichtblicke durch, welche die 8 Songs auf „Muss los“ bei aller Aggressivität und Brutalität recht interessant gestalten. Nach gut 30 Minuten ist dann schon Schluss mit „Muss los“, aber eine gute Band hat auch in einer halben Stunde alles gesagt, was es zu sagen gibt! (Marco Fiebag)

Mit “Divergence” wird am 13. September 2024 das neue Album der Melodic Death Metal-Band NIGHTWRAITH erscheinen. Es ist nach “NightWraith” (2018) und “Offering” (2022) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Denver rund um Gitarrist und Sänger Ben Pitts (IN THE COMPANY OF SERPENTS) und Gitarrist Igor Panasewicz (ASHEN HORDE, ABHORIA).

“Divergence” wurde von Zack Ohren (u.a. für MACHINE HEAD tätig) gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Jef Kopp ausgestattet. Nach dem Video-Clip zu “Whispers of Dragonflies” – mit Flöten-Spielerin Kelly Schilling (DREADNOUGHT, Ex-STOIC DISSENTION) – gibt es mit “Perpetual Night” nun ein weiteres Video.

In 1922, Manly P. Hall penned Initiates of the Flame, a seminal study simmering with secrets of the esoteric and the mystical. Hall dives deep into the cryptic currents of ancient mystery schools and covert societies, unraveling their symbolic and philosophical threads. He dishes out a cocktail of historical heft and metaphysical musings, focusing on the transformative trails trodden by spiritual seekers. Through allegory and acute analysis, Hall probes the perplexing paths of enlightenment, the veiled layers of human consciousness, and the relentless pursuit of profound wisdom. In this dense dance of revelation, Hall uncovers the concealed contours of enlightenment and the shadows lurking in the quest for truth.

The arcane allure of Initiates of the Flame fuels the chorus of Doctrine, the latest from the Dandy of the Los Angeles underworld, Blone Noble. With his trademark Bowie-esque baritone, Noble commands us to follow the esoteric path toward personal enlightenment. Though the waters may be choppy, it is essential to stay the course.

This icy installment of New Wave, dominated by plush ARP Solina strings and punchy LinnDrum beats, channels the sounds of New Order The Sisters of Mercy, Blancmange, and John Foxx. Thundering bass sequencers and a chorus-drenched slap section recall Ashes to Ashes. Noble’s songwriting, infused with spiritual insight, merges Beat poetry’s wordplay with his personal journals. Though the sound of Doctrine is cool and aloof, his message is warm and inviting – the very essence of detachment itself.

“The song is a mantra, an affirmation, a reminder to stay the course and resist the recurring temptation to run over myself,” he says.

Blone Noble’s music video is a minimalist marvel: he performs tai chi with visuals echoing the essence of the human aura. Distorted effects, generated live in-camera, lend a haunting quality to the scene. Filmed in black and white with vintage 1960s RCA broadcast cameras by Fred Joseph, the footage gets a meticulous edit from Pat Salway at Veneer Publications. The result is a striking blend of movement and mystique, where every gesture and glitch amplifies the enigmatic energy of the performance.

For the upcoming album, Noble (aka Pat Salway) turned to his own diary entries, chronicling the end of a long relationship. Not one to do things by halves, he left his longtime home in a famous historic occult temple in the Hollywood Hills and moved to entirely new and unfamiliar territory, embracing the unknown with open arms and a curious mind.

“I decided to move into a skid row hotel and get rid of all possessions not directly linked to the creation of art, including my car,” he says. “The result has been as intended—a torrent of inspired activity and a deeper connection to my purpose.”

Blone Noble took charge of producing Doctrine, handling all instrumentation and recording at his Downtown Los Angeles studio in The Hotel Bristol. Drummer Brendan Peleo-Lazar contributed additional percussion, recorded at 7 Levels Studio in East Hollywood. The track was mixed and mastered by long-time collaborator Jonny Bell at Jazz Cats Studio.

Blone Noble will unveil his debut EP through San Francisco’s Industry Standards, run by Stewart Kuhlo, formerly of Spiritual Cramp. In the brutalist confines of late-stage capitalism, the office isn’t just a workspace; it’s a fluorescent-lit purgatory where ambition goes to die. Here, under the sterile hum of overhead lights, workers become hollow-eyed hostages to spreadsheets and sales targets, their creativity crushed under the grind of quarterly quotas. Each click of the mouse, each tap of the keyboard, feels like another link in the chain of servitude, tethering the soul to a cycle of meaninglessness, all in the name of shareholder satisfaction. In this antiseptic arena, freedom is a quaint relic, and individuality is smothered by a monolithic pursuit of profit.

Enter Prison Planet, a project that tackles this existential grind head-on with a sonic sucker punch. The brainchild of Dominic Mastroianni, Prison Planet emerges as a lone voice in the post-punk wilderness, channeling the raw, discordant energy of rebellion into something beautifully bleak. Their latest offering, “Sacrifice,” serves as a dirge for the disenchanted, a nihilistic anthem for anyone who has felt the suffocating weight of the corporate yoke.

“Sacrifice” plunges listeners into a sonic swamp of despair and defiance. It’s a minimalist march through a maze of debt and drudgery, where Mastroianni’s baritone howls meet a relentless bassline and spectral samples. Imagine Clan of Xymox meets Sisters of Mercy in a dimly lit basement, where every note reverberates with the desolation of a life subsumed by labor’s relentless monotony. Each beat is a blunt reminder of bondage, each melody a mournful nod to lost autonomy. It’s as if one of the faceless factory drones from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis had picked up a guitar and poured all their despair into a dark bedroom pop project.

The lyrics of “Sacrifice” carve into the psyche like a razor through the skin of a weary soul. They evoke a grim reality where life is an unending parade of imposed mundanity and silent suffering. There’s a recurring theme of bleeding—symbolic of the slow, unacknowledged agony of existing as an overlooked cog in the unforgiving machinery of modern life. Mastroianni’s lyrics speak of a world that’s indifferent to individual pain, where one’s sense of self erodes in the face of ceaseless external demands.

Visually, the music video juxtaposes stark imagery—corporate cubicles, warzones, prison yards, and mundane daily drudgery—edited in a VHS-style haze that heightens the track’s sense of unease. It’s a disquieting montage of a life where rebellion is a whisper and conformity a scream.

“Sacrifice” is just the beginning—a harbinger of more to come. It’s the first of three singles paving the way for a full-length album set to drop in early spring 2025. While Prison Planet currently exists as a solitary endeavor, plans are afoot to flesh out the lineup and take this visceral post-punk project to the stage.

Die finnische Heavy Rock-Band ÄNGRY GENTLEMEN hat mit “Lawbreaker” eine neue Single veröffentlicht.

“”Lawbreaker” ist traditioneller Heavy-Blues-Rock, der drei verschiedene Geschichten miteinander verwebt, von illegalen Straßenrennen über Banküberfälle bis hin zu den Grübeleien eines alternden Mafiabosses. All diese Geschichten haben ein gemeinsames Thema: auf der falschen Seite des Gesetzes zu stehen”, erklärt die Band.

Im Juli ist mit “Red Tight Skirt” eine weitere Single erschienen.

“”Red Tight Skirt” ist ein Liebeslied, das von dem Moment erzählt, in dem man etwas so Schönes, aber Unerreichbares sieht”, erklärt die Band. “Die Geschichte des Liedes beschreibt den Moment, in dem die Welt stehen bleibt, der Körper erstarrt und keine vernünftigen Worte mehr aus dem Mund kommen. Zu allem Überfluss fängt der Verstand an, sich all die Dinge auszumalen, die man mit einem neuen Schwarm machen könnte, aber die Realität schlägt später zu.”

Die Song wurden gemeinsam mit Juho Salaterä im Lammaskallio Studio aufgenommen.

The New York City-based duo, Ghost Cop, strike again with their new song, “PROBLEMS.” As the first single off their LP, TROUBLE , that’s out October 4th, “PROBLEMS” further emphasizes Lucy Swope and Sean Dack’s dedication to the art of drama, using electronic music as a means to help set the mise-en-scène. Part chilling Giallo soundtrack, part pulsating dark dance, the track’s delicate—yet sinister—synthesizer layers build and break to create a cinematic, neon-soaked dream (or nightmare).

Swope’s voice is tantalizing and trepidatious, as if she’s luring the listener into submission while, simultaneously, warning them. “PROBLEMS is a song about embracing one’s inner darkness, and working with it, not against it,” says Swope and Dack. “It’s for anyone who’s ever been put down by being called ‘crazy.’ It’s probably the closest thing we’ll ever write to an empowerment song, except, true to our style, it’s more of a ‘fuck you.’ It’s the perfect advance single for TROUBLE, which deals with similar themes of mental illness and depression.” Ghost Cop’s forte is their innate ability to weave a suspense-filled web of dramatic elements and graceful song arrangements—”PROBLEMS” is no different.

It’s no coincidence the music video for “PROBLEMS” is eerie and jarring, a celluloid fantasy that embraces vintage thriller and horror films with its stark, monochromed lighting with intense, deep shadows. The masked character, replete in a shiny trench coat and knee-high boots, stalks around an empty home, peering out windows and perching in the kitchen for a cup of tea. They are biding their time… but why? And for whom?

“The video is a campy, fun reimagining of a home invasion movie as a Goldilocks tale–what if the intruder was just having some harmless fun?” asks Ghost Cop. Watch the video below.

Die Black Metal-Band ANTIKVLT hat einen Labeldeal bei Immortal Frost Productions unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird die neue Band rund um Chris Marrok (ANOMALIE) 2025 ein erstes Album veröffentlichen. Mit “No Rest for the Sacred” ist nun eine erste Single erschienen.

“Seitdem ich beobachtet habe, wie sich die überwiegende Mehrheit der sogenannten Black Metal-Konzerte in den letzten 15 Jahren konsequent in nichts anderes als einen weiteren seichten, „böse aussehenden“ Unterhaltungszirkus verwandelt hat, verspürte ich einen immer stärker werdenden Drang, zu meinen musikalischen Wurzeln zurückzukehren und die rohe, ehrliche und unberechenbare Essenz einer langsam aussterbenden Spezies echter Charaktere auf und abseits der Bühne wiederzubeleben”, sagt Marrok.

Die Symphonic Metal-Band EMREI´S hat mit “Last Breath” eine neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

“Im Mittelpunkt des Videos steht die Hauptfigur, die unerbittlich von einem Schatten verfolgt wird. Dieses Gespenst ist nicht nur eine Figur der Angst, sondern ein tiefgreifender Teil unserer Existenz, der für die unausweichliche Präsenz steht, die uns das ganze Leben lang verfolgt. Jeder von uns trägt seinen eigenen Geist in sich – einen persönlichen Schatten, dem wir nicht entkommen können, mit dem wir aber lernen müssen zu leben”, erklärt die Band.

In a crumbling pocket of Reading, Pennsylvania, where the ghosts of industrial pride dance in the shadows of derelict warehouses, Faux Fear emerges, breathing life into the desolation. There’s a grim poetry in the city’s decay—where every graffiti-scrawled wall and rusted factory whispers tales of lost dreams and faded glories, stories etched into the grime and grit. It’s a city where neglect and nostalgia entwine, and from this dance of death and renewal, Faux Fear has forged their sonic identity.

Their latest release, Lost Fates, a centerpiece of their new collection of songs, The Trends of Youth, unravels this melancholic tapestry with a sound steeped in the echoes of post-punk and darkwave pioneers. Through relentless, metallic synth lines and jangly, jagged guitars, Audrey’s haunting vocals cut through like a blade glinting in the gloom, invoking shades of Eurythmics’ synth-drenched drama, the unyielding energy of The March Violets, and the spectral beauty of Skeletal Family, with the ethereal whisper of Cocteau Twins ever-present.

Lost Fates meditates on what might have been—the roads untaken, the lives unlived, the ghostly specters of our alternate selves lingering in the mist of our choices. Faux Fear draws inspiration from Lisa Tuttle’s 1992 novel Lost Futures, where a dystopian world grapples with genetic manipulation and ethical decay, echoing their themes of fractured identities and existential unrest.

“The song is all about the small and large choices that have led to the lives we are each living, and confronting all the versions of yourself that you might have been,” the band explains. It’s a rumination on love, loss, and the fates left behind—an invocation of the paths that are never truly closed, only unseen.

To accompany the track, the band has conjured a music video that bends reality into a vivid, hallucinogenic narrative. Audrey transforms into a sequence of shifting personas: a dominatrix cloaked in mystery, a swaggering femme Elvis, a liberated flapper, and a sharp-edged Mod siren. Each guise vibrates with its own strange allure, together sketching out the enigmatic landscape that Faux Fear occupies. Their friend John, who did the keying for the video, says the concept materialized spontaneously—an organic outgrowth of their collaborative spirit.

Faux Fear’s origin story reads like a fable from the pandemic era—a time when physical distance gave birth to new creative intimacies. Audrey, wielding her drum programming and spectral voice, and Nicholas, with his guitar’s dark shimmer, began carving out a niche in the heart of Reading’s rough streets. With the addition of Pra on bass, their trio took shape, channeling the raw energy of DIY home recordings into something potent and fiercely alive.

Unlike so many contemporary acts lost in the sheen of overproduction, Faux Fear’s work is raw and tactile. The Trends of Youth thrums with an immediacy, the pulse of the drum machine beating with a strangely human warmth, each note vibrating with the weight of shared vulnerability and fervor. This isn’t music for the polished masses; it’s for those who find beauty in the rough-hewn, the unrefined, the honest.

Selbstbewusst wie zielstrebig – im dritten Anlauf zeigen sich FUTURE PALACE erstmals durch und durch gefestigt: Als habe man sich und seinen Sound endlich zu nicht weniger als Einhundertprozent gefunden, bewegt sich das Trio auf „Distortion“ in einer Schnittmenge aus Modern und Alternative Metal, die stets eine gewisse Reife ausstrahlt. Die ausgefallenen Experimente hat die Band zurückgefahren, ohne sich allerdings Scheuklappen aufzuziehen.

Regelmäßig wagen die Musiker:innen etwa kurze Ausreißer in härtere Gefilde, wo furiose Screams die bisweilen trügerische Harmonie zerschneiden und die Gitarren in „Malphas“ sogar eine Spur Industrial mit Djent-Vibes vermischen. Das ist genug Kante, um „Distortion“ vor Mainstream-Playlisten zu bewahren und am Ufer des Metalcore-Teichs zu fischen, und ist doch dosiert genug, um nicht die anderen Facetten der Band zu überwältigen.

Variabel, kraftvoll und emotional – den FUTURE PALACE-Sound prägt Sängerin Maria Lessing in entscheidender Weise
Ganz ohne harsche Vocals kommt zwar selbst der schwermütige Alternative Rocker „Panic Paralysis“ nicht aus, heimlicher Star neben Frontfrau Maria Lessing sind hier jedoch die subtil eingewobenen Synthesizer in der zweiten Reihe. Dass FUTURE PALACE das Rampenlicht in aller Regel aber ihrer Sängerin überlassen, hat einen guten Grund: Variabel, kraftvoll sowie emotional prägt Lessing den Sound der Band in unverkennbarer Weise.

Wobei nicht nur die leisen Töne Eindruck hinterlassen. An der Seite von Gastsängerin Charlie Rolfe (AS EVERYTHING UNFOLDS) offenbart sich eine durch und durch garstige Seite der Fronterin, die aber an dieser Stelle ausgezeichnet platziert ist, hat der Song doch die gesellschaftliche Ungleichbehandlung von Mann und Frau zum Thema. Dass die teils persönlichen Texte meist unverblümt und dafür direkt sowie zielgerichtet formuliert sind, verleiht „Distortion“ darüber hinaus Authentizität.

Deshalb können FUTURE PALACE auch mit einfachen Mitteln unsere Aufmerksamkeit fesseln: Die Synthesizer-Untermalung von „Dreamstate“ verleiht dem Stück zusammen mit den aggressiven Ausbrüchen ein Gefühl der Zerrissenheit; das zeitweise an ANNISOKAY erinnernde „Rays Of Light“ überrascht mit dem vielleicht härtesten Break der Bandgeschichte und „They Take What They Want“ schließlich bedient sich munter an Nu-Metal-Vokabular, bevor bombastische Orchestersamples dem Finale zusätzliche Dramatik schenken.

Dass „Decarabia“ mit seinem arg simplen Drumming und dem tanzbaren Disco-Synthesizer im Vergleich zu flach ausfällt, ist glücklicherweise die Ausnahme auf einem sonst durchweg soliden Album. Ihren Zenit erreicht haben FUTURE PALACE mit „Distortion“ zwar noch nicht, doch baut das Drittwerk auf den Lehren des Vorgängers „Run“ (2022) in sinnvoller Weise auf, wodurch die Gruppe spätestens jetzt zu einer ernstzunehmenden Größe im modernen Alternative Metal herangereift ist.

Mit “Eating” wird am 4. Oktober 2024 via Nefarious Industries die neue EP der dänischen Experimental Meth-Metal / Post-Industrial-Band BYE BYE TSUNAMI erscheinen.

“Auf dem Planeten WU無 werden menschliche Säuglinge absichtlich gezüchtet, um die Macht innerhalb eines ausgewählten Kreises von elitären Dog-God-Oligarchen zu repräsentieren. Diese einflussreichen Persönlichkeiten nehmen an öffentlichen esoterischen Ritualen teil, die der drogenkontrollierten Babyboomer-Bevölkerung Unterhaltung bieten. Eine kleine Minderheit, die sich nicht ganz an die gesellschaftlichen Normen hält, bewegt sich diskret in der Gestalt von Schaufensterpuppen. Diese Menschen sind nur an ihrer einzigartigen Eigenschaft zu erkennen: Sie können einen starken Regenbogen-Laserstrahl aus ihrem Gesäß aussenden. Als sie nun erwachen, bewaffnen sie sich mit dem Ziel, die Tsunami-Prophezeiung zu erfüllen und den Zugang zu den schwer fassbaren Früchten der Kontrolle zurückzuerobern”, erklärt die Band.

Kimberly Kornmeier, Sängerin der amerikanischen Band BOW EVER DOWN, und Michael Smith, Mitglied von FICTION 8, einer Band, die in den frühen 90er Jahren entstand und ebenfalls in den Vereinigten Staaten beheimatet ist, veröffentlichen gemeinsam nach der 6-Track-EP „Strangers Among Strangers“ nun ihr erstes Full Length Album. Irgendwo zwischen Siouxsie, 80er Wave Pop, dunklen Klangstrukturen und wohliger Tim Burton-Atmosphäre angesiedelt, gelingt dem Duo ein fein ausbalanciertes Werk.

Der dunkle Opener „The powerful sun“ ist besonders Gitarrenlastig und besitzt diese dichte, leicht nebulöse Atmosphäre, deren betörende Samtheit dann durch die weiche Elastizität der Stimmbänder entsteht. Das coldwavige „Beyond Words“ besticht mit einer Klanglandschaft, die von eisigen Synthesizern und einer durchdringenden Basslinie geprägt ist, die unter Kimberlys charakteristischem Gesang groovt und ein klein wenig an The Creatures erinnert.

Etwas druckvoller, dennoch mit sphärischen Flächen versetzt, dringt „Only thruth remains“ an die Oberfläche, welches dann stärker auf die Drums setzt, während die Saiten gar ein wenig Latin-mäßig daherkommen. Die Stimme variiert zwischen dunkel-tragischem und eindringlich-weichem Gesang. Sehr getragen und mit ruhiger Kraft erklingt das romantisch verklärte „Fly this high“, während „wait for me“ einen Klangkosmos erschafft, der ein wenig an die wundervollen Cocteau Twins erinnert. Überhaupt scheint eine gewisse Faszination für den typischen 4AD Sound vorzuliegen. „Timeless Creatures“ zeigt sich von den elektronischen Sphären her sehr verspielt, fährt aber weiter in ruhigen Gewässer. Die weichgezeichneten Harmoniebögen tragen den Song und zuletzt überzeugt Kimberly mit ihrer Erzählkunst. Zum Schluss darf es in „Wide Open“ auch mal ein wenig gothrockig zugehen.

Fazit: Ein feinsinniges Werk voller kleiner Perlen, die mal den Freund sphärischer Klänge, mal die Fans des unterkühlten Waves, mal die geneigten Hörer dunkler Pop Musik und mal 4AD Epigonen anspricht. (andreas)

Earlier this year, The Jesus and Mary Chain made a high impact return with Glasgow Eyes. Released in March via Fuzz Club, the album celebrates their enduring legacy, storming the UK Official Album Chart and landing at number seven—a height not seen since their iconic Darklands era in 1987.

Now, the Reid brothers are releasing a new song that was captured during those album sessions: Pop Seeds.

Named after a band name the Reids once shared in their early years, the buoyant Pop Seeds looks back with a sentimental smirk. It’s a throwback to the shared psychic space that ignited The Jesus and Mary Chain, a story told in their memoir Never Understood.

Straying from the darker, electronica-laced tones permeating the rest of Glasgow Eyes, Pop Seeds radiates the bright, buoyant spirit of two young men eyeing an open future. Jangly guitars and nostalgic lyrics blend with cheerful, bloopy synths, echoing the vibes laid of by acts such as Wilco, Beck, Belle and Sebastian, and even the trippy vibes of The Flaming Lips. This delightful little number is a blast of youthful exuberance wrapped in a retrospective reverie. Pop Seeds blends classic alternative rock with Americana influences and wistful, poetic lyrics, wrapped up in a intricate arrangement.

Pop Seeds adds to the anticipation for the long-awaited autobiography Never Understood, which sees William and Jim Reid tell the full story of one of Britain’s greatest guitar bands for the very first time – a wildly funny and improbably moving chronicle of brotherly strife, feedback, riots, drug and alcohol addiction, eternal outsiders and extreme shyness, that also somehow manages to be a love letter to the Scottish working-class family.

Never Understood will also be released in two limited edition formats. The Record Store Edition, out 3 October, will feature alternate artwork and will be housed in a bespoke slipcase packaged, all designed by William Reid. It will be limited to 1500 copies. The White Rabbit Edition follows on November 21st, which adds a 12” vinyl featuring audiobook extracts and four exclusive postcards. Each copy of the 500-run pressing will be signed by both William and Jim Reid.

Die Rock-Band HERBST hat einen neuen Song geteilt: Den Clip “Du siehst mich an” kann man bei YouTube anschauen. Auch die vorherige Single “Tausend Fragen” steht auf den üblichen Streaming-Plattformen bereit.

Die vorherige Auskopplung “Argumente” kann man sich ebenfalls auf allen gängigen Streaming-Plattformen anhören. Zuvor veröffentlichte die Gruppe außerdem einen Clip: “Spiegel” steht via YouTube in Bild und Ton bereit. Zum Stück verrät die Gruppe:

“Der Song ‘,Spiegel’‘ entstand ebenfalls – wie unsere erste Single – am Anfang der Songwriting-Sessions 2023 und gab mit dem groovy Riff ziemlich schnell ein spannendes Thema vor. Nach den ersten geschriebenen Zeilen, und zwar der Refrain-Hook, kristallisierte sich das Thema ,,Spiegel‘‘ (Spiegelbild) heraus und schrieb sich dann praktisch von selbst (wenn’s mal so einfach wäre ).”

Zuvor hatten HERBST einen Plattenvertrag mit Drakkar Entertainment abgeschlossen. Das gab die Formation in einem Statement bekannt:

“Wir sind überglücklich und stolz verkünden zu können, dass wir einen Deal beim legendären Plattenlabel ,,Drakkar Entertainment‘‘ unterschrieben haben! Es ist ein absoluter Traum, mit einer so angesehenen Institution zusammenarbeiten zu dürfen, die bereits zahlreiche Größen des Rock und Metal unter Vertrag hat und wir können es kaum erwarten, schon bald unsere Musik einem noch größeren Publikum zu präsentieren.”

Gleichzeitig präsentierte die Formation ihre Single “Nie wieder” mit einem Musikvideo bei YouTube. Es ist der erste Vorgeschmack auf das Zweitwerk “Spiegel”, das am 20. September 2024 via Drakkar Entertainment erscheinen wird.

“‘Nie wieder’ war der erste Song der Recording-Session für unser zweites Album und beinhaltet gleich mal ein hartes Thema: Eltern verlassen ihre Kinder. Dass die sich dann verschließen und gefühlskalt werden können, ist hier unser Thema. Bezeichnend der Satz: ‘Was ich in mir trage, bleibt für immer begraben.‘’ Der düstere Sound fängt diese Stimmung passend perfekt ein.”

Die Thrash / Death Metal-Band BORNBROKEN hat nach dem Titeltrack mit “How Strong You Are” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Am I Invisible” veröffentlicht. Es ist der dritte Release der Kanadier aus Montreal und wird am 20. September 2024 escheinen.

“Am I Invisible” sei ein Album, das tief in die menschliche Erfahrung eintaucht und sich mit Themen wie existenzieller Verzweiflung, persönlicher Stärke, gesellschaftlicher Spaltung und dem unerbittlichen Lauf der Zeit beschäftigt.

Die orientalische Progressive Metal-Band ORPHANED LAND hat bei den diesjährigen “Metal Hammer Awards” eine Auszeichnung in der Kategorien “Best Attitude” gewonnen. Als Begründung diente deren Einsatz für ein friedliches Zusammenleben aller Religionen und Kulturen.

Im September und November 2024 kehrt die Formation nach Europa zurück, um unter dem Motto “A Heaven You May Create” einige Konzerte zu spielen. Auf dem Programm stehen dabei auch Shows in Siegburg, Hannover, Leipzig, München, Trier, Hamburg, Osnabrück, Köln sowie Weinheim.

Für das Vorprogramm im September konnten neben SCIENCE OF DISORDER auch NEST OF PLAGUES gewonnen werden. Je nach Termin eröffnen zudem STRUTURACL bzw. LONE SURVIVOR.

Im November besteht das Tour-Paket neben ORPHANED LAND aus DIRTY SHIRT, STRALE, RING OF GYGES und ROYAL RAGE.

Zuletzt veröffentlichten ORPHANED LAND das Live-Album “A Heaven You May Create” (2023).
