Die Black Metal-Band ASARHADDON hat mit “Êra” ein neues Album angekündigt. Das nach “Reysa” (2020) zweite Album der Deutschen markiert auch das zehnjährige Jubiläum der Band und wird am 4. Oktober 2024 via Vendetta Records erscheinen. Reinhören ist jetzt in die Single “Ein letzter Frühling” bei YouTube möglich.

“Êra”, was auf Altniederfränkisch “Krone” bedeutet, verwebt die Geschichten von vier Königen und lässt sich dabei von wahren historischen Begebenheiten inspirieren. Das Albumcover, das mit den Schädeln von vier Vögeln verziert ist, symbolisiert die jeweiligen Herkunftsländer der vier Könige.

Die Modern Metal-Band PYRAH hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Franzosen aus Strasbourg ihr neues Album “Veni Vidi Delevi” veröffentlichen. Es ist nach “Where Am I?” (2014) und “Part of the Ghost World” (2019) das dritte Album der 2012 gegründeten Band.

“Veni Vidi Delevi” wurde gemeinsam mit Jonathan Mazzeo (BLEED SOMEONE DRY) bei MathLab Studio Recording aufgenommen und von Rob Carson (XAON, BLOODSTORM) in den Red Beard Studios gemixt und gemastert. Release-Termin ist der 20. September 2024. Vorab gibt es mit “My Only Solace” einen Video-Clip.

“Acido Y Puto” wurde von Matt Dougherty gemixt und gemastert und ist am 9. August 2024 via Small Stone Recordings erschienen. Vorab gibt es zum Opener “Space Nomad” – eine Geschichte über einen nomadischen Reisenden, der das Universum auf der Suche nach kosmischer Wahrheit und Verbindung durchquert – ebenfalls ein Video.

Ende Juli veröffentlichten SCHWARZER ENGEL ihr neues Album. „Höhere Gewalt“ umfasst 11 Tracks, die thematisch tief in die Abgründe der menschlichen Seele eintauchen. Musikalisch bewegt man sich in gewohnt düsteren Gefilden mit einer Mischung aus harten Gitarren und Elektroeinflüssen, gespickt sakraler Epik bis hin zu ruhigeren Passagen. Im Kern alles beim alten, wobei es immer besonders wird, wenn sich die dunkle Stimme von Frontmann und Songwriter Dave Jason mit den mächtigen Parts in der Musik von SCHWARZER ENGEL paaren. „Einer gegen Alle“ ist für mich einer dieser Songs, die sich vom Rest des Albums abheben, ebenso wie „Krähenbruder“. Andere, eher elektronisch tanzbar gestaltete Tracks rauschen bei mir dann eher so durch. Dafür ist das Spektrum breiter gefächert als bei reinen Gothic Metal Bands und für mehrere Zielgruppen ist genug dunkler Stoff dabei.

Beim Hören von „Höhere Gewalt“ habe ich für mich wie auch bei den letzten Alben wieder feststellen müssen, dass mich SCHWARZER ENGEL bisher nie komplett überzeugen konnte, aber ein Album hat von der Basis her immer eine gute Qualität und es gibt immer zwei, drei Lieder mit Ohrwurmqualität. Das neue Werk sollten Fans dunkler Musik mit härtere Gitarrengangart also mal gehört haben, um sich ihr Urteil zu bilden. Sollte für jeden was dabei sein. (eller)

Die Death Metal-Band FUMING MOUTH hat einen neuen Song geteilt: Das Lyric-Video “Metal on Metal” steht via YouTube bereit. Bei dem von Kurt Ballou produzierten Stück handelt es sich wie bei “Daylight Again” um eine bislang unveröffentlichte B-Seite des Albums “Last Day Of Sun” (2023).

Eigentlich sollte “Daylight Again” die Platte beschließen, musste jedoch aus Platz gründen gestrichen werden, wie Sänger Mark Whelan erläutert:

„‘Daylight Again’ vermittelt, dass die Zukunft rosig ist. Es wurde für die Band hinter den Kulissen so dunkel. Wir hatten so viele Freunde verloren, so viele Probleme. Es fühlte sich an, als würde es nie enden.

Der Song sollte der letzte Track auf unserem Album ‘Last Day of Sun’ sein, aber er passte nicht auf die Schallplatte, also haben wir ihn in den Tresor gelegt. Es fühlt sich passend an, dass ein Song mit dem Titel ‘Daylight Again’ endlich ans Licht kommt.“

Zusätzlich enthält die Digital-Single “Daylight Again” mit “Timeless” auch eine alternative Version des Albumtracks “Out of Time”.

Die Stuttgarter Metalcore-Band PROJECT HELIX präsentiert mit „Doomscroller“ bei YouTube eine weitere Video-Single.  Der Song prangert die Macht der Algorithmen in unserem digitalen Alltag an, der Clip zu “Doomscroller” zeigt dystopische Szenen rund um Fake, Mediensucht und den Verlust von Selbstwertgefühl.

Das Video kommt von Stefan Nacke (VIDEOHEADZ), “Doomscroller” wurde von Johannes Rupp (DEATH BY DISSONANCE) produziert.

With their latest single Numb and Hollow, Indonesian duo Camlann serves up a poignant critique of capitalism yuppie culture, showing how wealth and early success don’t guarantee happiness.

Ony Godfrey and Fauzan Pratama have traveled a twisting trail from their trad-goth beginnings to their present mix of dark disco and gritty post-punk. They’ve borrowed beats and moods from diverse deities of sound like Xmal Deutschland, Clan of Xymox, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Grace Jones, and Prince. Their evolving experiment has brewed up a distinctive brew of music, where vocals drift dreamily over synths, adding an eerie elegance and enigmatic edge to their tracks.

The video for Numb and Hollow plunges into the personal plight of a Wall Street bigwig, a man wrapped in wealth yet wrestling with a hollow heart. Amidst his opulent existence, he discovers that gold and grandeur haven’t granted him genuine joy. The lyrics delve into the weight of maintaining a deceptive facade—a charade masking his true self. This stark story critiques the vacuousness of a life driven by material madness and societal showmanship, offering a hard-hitting hint that authenticity, not artifice, is where true contentment lies.

As Camlann ventures into uncharted sonic seas, they stir up a storm of sound, blending shadows and beats with brazen boldness. From dark disco’s dance floor to gritty post-punk’s grimy grooves, they shape their soundscape without shackles or restraints. Their debut, The Forgotten Lost Fragments, was followed by Circa 1983, and they tossed in tracks like Midnight Euphoria and Charming Deceiver before unleashing their third album, Train to 86th Street. Always pushing boundaries, Camlann crafts a concoction of melodies that straddle the line between shadowy and soulful.

Die Metalcore-Band MISS MAY I kehrt im Dezember 2024 nach Europa zurück, um eine Handvoll Headline-Shows zu spielen. Im Zentrum steht dabei das Debütalbum “Apologies Are For The Weak” (2009), das die US-Amerikaner in voller Länge präsentieren werden.

Erst am 23. August 2024 veröffentlichte die Formation zum Jubiläum eine Neuaufnahme des Werks.

Die Symphonic Doom-Death Metal-Band INFIRMUM hat mit dem Video zu “Burn” eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums “From the Depths I Cried” veröffentlicht.

“”Burn” handelt von allem, was umstritten ist und in der menschlichen Seele brennt, was wir im Verborgenen fühlen, was die Menschen zu verstecken oder auszulöschen versuchen, um in die Gesellschaft zu passen. Während der männliche Teil in ‘Burn’ diese Gefühle und einzigartigen Visionen der Welt um uns herum offenlegt, repräsentiert der weibliche Teil die Umarmung all dieser Dämonen, die Dunkelheit als Teil des menschlichen Wesens, und diese dunkle Flamme wächst, bis sie schließlich eins mit dem Individuum wird”, erklärt die neue Sängerin Sabine Blodwin.

“From the Depths I Cried” ist nach “Walls of Sorrow” (2020) das zweite Album der finnischen Band, die 2022 auch mit der EP “The Great Unknown” vorstellig wurden. Produziert wurde das Album, welches am 27. September 2024 erscheinen soll, von Juho Räihä (SWALLOW THE SUN, BEFORE THE DAWN). Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Gogo Melone (AEONIAN SORROW).

Since 2009, Vancouver’s Girlfriends and Boyfriends have been forging a formidable footprint, fusing post-punk, electroclash, New Wave, and dance-punk into a distinctive, dedicated sound that echoes the anthems of vinyl and cassette eras.

Their latest gem, title track Lost In The Noise, stands as a sweeping saga of their musical evolution, brought to life under Midnight Mannequin Records. The song reverberates with the grandeur of ‘80s icons like The Alarm, Aztec Camera, and Big Country, boasting booming guitar riffs, synth splendor, a soulful sax solo, and a sizzling guitar outro that adds a touch of sophistication. Anticipation on the edge of paradise forlorn,
Orphan dreams come running just as soon as they are born.
Faster than the speed of life, you sink like a stone,
Hanging from the ledge by the crack of a wishbone.
Januarius, a seasoned musician since the early 2000s, has trodden a turbulent trail through DC’s underground scene, leaving their mark with bands like The Chance, The Mirror Script, and Ghost Light. Their musical metamorphosis unfolded in Philadelphia’s South Street, a rough-and-tumble, electric haven reminiscent of the Lower East Side’s chaotic charm. Frequenting fabled spots like the Trocadero and exploring eclectic record shops and punk apparel outlets (RIP Zipperhead), Januarius was seduced by punk’s raw, rebellious essence. This yearning for a more liberated, less constricted creative space steered them toward the post-punk realm. Embracing a fierce DIY, lo-fi ethos, Januarius champions the notion that punk’s true spirit lies in defying rules, not dictating them.

“My main creative influence has always been Philadelphia,” he reflects. “I grew up in an era of urban blight, which forced me to look at the world differently and find beauty in places where one wouldn’t typically experience it…I’ve always felt like a perpetual outsider my whole life and can be rather misanthropic in terms of my hopes for humanity…Whether it was growing up gay and artistically minded in a tough working-class urban area, not fitting in with the DC music scene, or despising the soulless pablum of the modern LGBT world, I’ve always been on the outside. Never blend in.”

Januarius continues this outsider’s journey with their new single, “A Wishbone in the Rye.” In this track, the synth sings its sorrowful solo, swirling with shoegaze’s spectral tremolo, distant whispers, and layered echoes. Januarius, drawn to lo-fi’s languid allure, revels in the nostalgic crackle of old vinyl, the fuzzy hum of portable radios, and the tinny hiss of ancient cassettes. “The lo-fi aesthetic mimics the sense of listening to music on a small radio or cassette player,” he muses. “That sound sends people back to a time where core memories and feelings that have been buried somewhere in the subconscious emerge. I hope this makes people connect much more with the music.”

“A Wishbone in the Rye” spins a tale of vanishing dreams and inevitable despair. It charts the crumbling of hopes, symbolized by falling and drowning, turning ambitions into ashes. The song’s imagery—wishbones, crowns of thorns, and shattered glass—depicts the delicate disappointment of chasing unreachable ideals, culminating in a deep, despairing sense of futility. This song, a melancholic nod to J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, is more than a mere homage. “It was written as a sort of lament for a talented and promising young person who I saw get absorbed by the worst social elements of my community,” Januarius says. “I was basically saying there was no longer anyone there to catch you before you fall. It’s simply up to chance whether the vampires get their claws in you or not. A 50/50 shot, just like a wishbone.”

A distinct dimension in Januarius’s sound comes from their love for the guitar-driven rawness of The Wipers, a band whose influence resonates in the angular riffs and emotionally charged solos that thread through their music. “Greg Sage of The Wipers is perhaps my biggest musical influence,” he reveals. “He was never shy about letting the guitars rip, and I wanted to do the same—emphasize my roots as a punk rock guitar player. The idea of a guitar solo in every song is partly a tribute to Sage’s fearlessness and partly a challenge to myself to merge that unbridled intensity with the spectral vibes of cold wave and post-punk.”

Januarius’s other influences are just as eclectic. “I’ve never wanted to have any limits on what I do and try to let whatever influence bubbles to the surface take shape,” he explains. Januarius draws from literature, naming Ugo Foscolo, Arthur Rimbaud, Allen Ginsberg, Jim Carroll, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti as direct artistic ancestors of the punk movement. These influences seep into their lyrics, which, like their music, are a blend of stark realism and poetic surrealism. “The visual imagery is essential to creating the atmosphere of the song as much as the sound of the instruments,” they assert.

Rave On by Januarius

Tracks like “Rave On” and “Strange Illusions” echo this fusion of visual and auditory aesthetics, drawing inspiration from film and art. “David Lynch has been a huge influence on my music,” he admits. “I also love old silent movies like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Haxan, and The Phantom of the Opera. Sergio Leone is a big influence, as is the musical landscape created by Ennio Morricone in his films. If David Lynch directed a cinematic version of a Caravaggio fresco, I think it would look and feel like my music sounds.”

Strange Illusions by Januarius

In his upcoming album, “Glass Eyes, Glass Ghosts,” slated for a winter release, Januarius plans to expand on these themes, perhaps leaning further into their love for noise rock and the early ’80s No Wave scene. “I’m hoping to find new unorthodox recording techniques to experiment with as well,” he hints. “I’ve always tried not to copy people who influenced me but rather to seek what they sought. I approach music like a historian in a lot of ways. Working backwards helps me to move forward.”

In this forward momentum, Januarius sees music as a key to cultural redemption. “Humans have been blessed with tremendous gifts that other living beings do not have, like emotions, creative fire, and thought,” he concludes. “We’ve squandered these things though in favor of cultural banality, tribalism, endless profit, and ideology. Born from the passion of those who are not just participants but custodians of this world, Modernwav is a fever dream where bands, DJs, performance artists, and the unabashedly avant-garde collide. It’s where the black-clad faithful, drawn to the throbbing nexus of goth, post-punk, and modern electronic music, find their tribe. This is no corporate event; it’s a labor of love, a genuine expression of a subculture’s heart and soul. Here, the night isn’t just a backdrop but a living, breathing entity—a ritual, a ceremony, a space where the boundaries between audience and artist, voyeur and exhibitionist, lover and loner, blur into one. It welcomes all who seek and challenge none to stay away, offering a home to those bold enough to step into its shadows and celebrate the raw, untamed spirit of the scene.

This November, in partnership with Los Angeles underground mainstay Lethal Amounts, Modernwav transcends the usual with its inaugural two-day festival in San Diego, set to become a keystone of the city’s underground nightlife. From November 22-23, a congregation of the eclectic and electric will gather, headlined by genre stalwarts like TR/ST and IAMX, alongside rising provocateurs Spike Hellis, Louisahhh, Matte Blvck, Nox Novacula, Die Sexual, and Void Palace. Modernwav has long been the architect of San Diego’s alternative nightlife, seamlessly merging bands, kink performers, and DJs into a singular, hedonistic experience. Now, it broadens its scope, amplifying its vision with this festival debut—a spectacle that promises to be more than just its lineup.

The festivities deepen with DJ sets from Soft Faith, whose deft hands will guide the faithful through waves of dark euphoria, while Domina Death and Gisella Thorn will command the room with their striking presence. It’s this kind of synergy—where sound and spectacle entwine—that defines Modernwav.

TR/ST (Robert Alfons) has danced deftly around the edges of the underground, evolving his project into a defining force within the dark dance scene. With the release of Joyland in 2014 and the two-part The Destroyer in 2019, Alfons has proven himself a master of balancing the eerie and the anthemic. His music is a fragile dance between melancholy and ecstasy, a sonic landscape where one can easily get lost and never wish to be found.

IAMX is the solo vehicle of Chris Corner (formerly of Sneaker Pimps), known for his intoxicating blend of electronic, alternative, and dark pop. Corner’s performances are intense theatrical journeys—deeply visceral, unapologetically raw. His music is an exploration of identity, sexuality, and self-destruction, pulling listeners into a cinematic universe where every beat is a pulse, every lyric a confession.

Spike Hellis channels the ferocity of post-punk and the harsh textures of industrial and EBM into a pulsing sonic barrage. Their music is a jagged exploration of urban despair and existential dread, a fitting soundtrack for wandering through the concrete labyrinths of a crumbling metropolis. The intensity of their live performances is not for the faint-hearted; it’s an immersion in wit, grit, and gloom, where the boundary between artist and audience collapses in a shared moment of raw catharsis.

Louisahhh brings her fiery fusion of techno and punk to the stage, a hurricane of sound and fury. Her sets are a visceral experience, fusing punishing beats with soul-stirring vocals that cut through the noise like a knife through fog. She is both shaman and warrior, leading her followers through a high-energy ritual of sound and movement that leaves no one untouched.

Matte Blvck conjures a potent blend of post-punk atmospheres and industrial rhythms, threading the needle between dark introspection and raw power. Their sound is a modern take on the old guard—a brooding symphony that speaks to both the past and the future.

Nox Novacula treads the deathrock line with a deep understanding of both its roots and its potential. Their songs are a profound journey into the abyss, where dark melodies intertwine with pounding electronic beats to create a haunting exploration of human frailty and inner turmoil.

Die Sexual, the L.A.-based duo of Rosselinni and Anton Floriano, delve deep into a heady mix of EBM, techno, and electropop. Their sound is drenched in sensuality and tension, a hypnotic dance between desire and despair that plays out over throbbing analog synths and sultry vocals.

Void Palace, another standout from L.A., embraces the avant-garde with their eclectic fusion of darkwave and industrial. Their music is a journey through eerie landscapes, where driving beats and haunting synths evoke both dread and fascination.

Modernwav’s festival debut is set to be an immersive experience—a collision of sounds, sights, and sensations that promises to push the limits of what an alternative event can be. It’s not just about the music; it’s about the movement, the moment, the memory.
