Chicago’s The Gothtones announce a new single, The Two of Us, from their self-titled fourth album, a dreamy track that slides into focus like a ghostly transmission from a lost world, drenched in post-punk unease and subtle darkwave textures. Jerret S. Cortese’s vocals and angular guitar play off Ann Filmer’s spectral tones in a tense yet strangely airy dialogue, reminiscent of Interpol’s precise emotional detachment and the spectral gloom of Joy Division and Magnetic Fields. Underneath, Doug Patinka anchors the mood with bass lines that pulse gently, threading a path through bleak lyrical visions.

Despite exploring the quiet horror of nuclear annihilation, The Two of Us remains curiously buoyant. The lyrics paint an unsettling tableau: cracked ceilings mimicking broken skies, peeling paint symbolizing emotional collapse and romantic illusions unraveling into existential solitude. Yet, somehow, the music rises, airy and effervescent. There’s an elusive charm as male and female vocals delicately intertwine, offering glimpses of warmth amidst the song’s atmosphere of cold, anxious isolation.

But the deceptive tranquility soon collapses. In its closing moments, the track splinters into a surreal sonic breakdown, unraveling into dissonance and peculiar noise. It’s a striking shift; a delirious unraveling mirroring the chaotic uncertainty of the song’s nuclear dread. A timely track, indeed.

Accompanied visually by a lyric video featuring thermal imagery of two languid cats, the juxtaposition feels fittingly surreal, a quietly absurdist flourish amid catastrophe. The Two of Us stands as a striking piece of spectral pop….simultaneously delicate and ominous, fraught with apocalyptic beauty.

The Gothtones’ Woodlawn Green was released in 2011, followed by three full-length studio albums: After Dark (2016), Dovetails for Noddy (2019), and Love Gets Your Ghost (2020). Their fourth album, Gothtones, was released in May 2025 on the band’s own Funeral Cake records.

Lebanon Hanover, the enigmatic Anglo-Swiss duo of Larissa Iceglass and William Maybelline, have unveiled “Torture Rack,” a dramatic single and evocative visual from their eagerly anticipated album, “Asylum Lullabies,” dropping digitally on July 10th via Fabrika Records.

“Asylum Lullabies”  is described as “a very heavy album about dealing with mental health struggles, a breakup, and ongoing wars, and the current horror in the world, ultimately leaving one consumed with dread, fear, and a constant feeling of being crushed. and where “Everything falls apart at the same time.”

Torture Rack plunges listeners into a whirlwind emotional descent, vividly capturing the raw aftermath of a painful breakup. The track thrives in a haze of gasoline-fueled escapism, examining the wreckage of a relationship left in its wake. It captures a dissociative anxiety where speeding things up slows them down into a circular crawl, transforming inner torment into a nocturnal ride through this heatbroken madness in an amusement park fused with slow, mechanical rhythms. The lingering agony and obsessive nostalgia propel the narrative, delivering a gripping exploration of personal turmoil and compulsive forward motion.

Directed by London’s visionary artist Tamas Mesmer, the music video is a compelling journey into existential distress. Mesmer, known for crafting visuals steeped in surrealism and unease, previously collaborated with Lebanon Hanover on the visually arresting Better Than Going Under and the provocative Come Kali Come, along with the chilling Funeral Fashion for Qual.

Mesmer’s cinematic touch expertly magnifies the song’s visceral emotions. Captured entirely in striking black-and-white, the video positions Lebanon Hanover amidst a decaying amusement park—a haunting landscape reflecting emotional turmoil. Produziert wurde das Stück von Gitarrist Tim Kanoa Hansen, den Mix übernahm der Musiker wie das Mastering gemeinsam mit Eike Freese. Den Song kommentiert Hansen:

Bemerkenswert ist an „The Screaming Of The Valkyries” vor allem die Konsequenz: Selbst mit dem 14. Studioalbum bekommt Mastermind Dani Filth die Essenz seines musikalischen Babys zu fassen, als wäre es die leichteste aller Übungen. CRADLE OF FILTH drehen sich keineswegs im Kreis und trotzdem finden die Briten Mittel und Wege, ihren jüngsten Sprössling mit dem eigenen Erbe zu verknüpfen.

Das Resultat sind neun Kompositionen, die einerseits frisch wirken und dabei doch immer wieder die Verbindung zum Frühwerk suchen. Natürlich passt sich Scott Atkins‘ Produktion den heutigen Hörgewohnheiten an, genauso wie das songschreiberische Verständnis der Band über mehr als drei Dekaden gewachsen ist. So blitzt in der eröffnenden Single „To Live Deliciously“ und dem siebenminütigen „Ex Sanguine Draculae“ durchaus mal ein knackiges Thrash-Riff auf, während das latent bedrohliche Piano in „Malignant Perfection“ von der melodischen Gitarrenführung flankiert wird.

Zugänglich ist „The Screaming Of The Valkyries” somit nicht nur dank Zoë Marie Federoffs Klargesang, der vor allem im Refrain des sonst so nach vorne drängenden „White Hellebore“ mit der Operette liebäugelt. Die Keyboarderin trägt auch sonst einen nicht unwesentlichen Anteil an der gespenstischen Atmosphäre des Albums, indem sie „Demagoguery“ etwa mit Spinett-Klängen einleitet und auch im weiteren Verlauf der Platte immer wieder unheilschwanger anmutende Akzente setzt.

Fast erweckt es den Eindruck, als orientierten sich CRADLE OF FILTH in dieser Hinsicht an ihrer eigenen Diskografie der 2000er Jahre. Das düstere Flair aber schmückt „The Screaming Of The Valkyries“ auf ganz unterschiedliche Seite aus: Angeschwärzter Heavy Metal hinterlässt in „The Trinity Of Shadows“ seine Spuren, wohingegen das schaurige-schöne „Non Omnis Moriar“ den Gothic-Einschlag der Band hervorkehrt.

CRADLE OF FILTH verpacken Tradition in ein modernes Gewand
Stets unverkennbar drückt schlussendlich natürlich auch Shouter Dani Filth dem Material seinen Stempel auf. Am Ende sind es zuvorderst die charakteristischen, regelrecht gespenstischen Screams, die sich wie ein roter Faden durch das Album spinnen. Ein Stilmittel mit Wiedererkennungswert, über das wir uns beim 14. Mal noch genauso freuen wie beim ersten Aufeinandertreffen. Denn auch die Tradition gehört zu CRADLE OF FILTH – verpackt ist sie in ein modernes Gewand, doch in der Brust der Veteranen schlägt noch immer dasselbe Herz von damals, das sich nicht wegen irgendwelcher Trends verbiegen möchte. Diesbezüglich bleibt Dani Filth auch heute noch konsequent.

IMPUREZA veröffentlichen ihr drittes Studioalbum: „Alcázares“ erscheint am 11. Juli 2025 via Season Of Mist und befasst sich inhaltlich mit dem spanischen Mittelalter und seinem Kampf zwischen christlichen Königreichen und Al-Andalus. Mit „Verdiales & Bajo las Tizonas de Toledo“ gibt es nun einen weiteren Video-Clip.

„Das als zweiteilige Komposition angelegte Stück eröffnet das Album mit „Verdiales“, einer instrumentalen Hommage an die Volkstraditionen von Málaga, bevor es in die martialische Kraft von „Bajo las Tizonas de Toledo“ übergeht – eine Nacherzählung der legendären Heldentaten von El Cid: Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (El Cid Campeador) taucht nicht nur als historische Figur auf, sondern auch als gespenstischer Archetyp von Rache und Tapferkeit, wobei sein mythisches Schwert Tizona im Mittelpunkt der lyrischen und musikalischen Wildheit des Stücks steht“, heißt es von Seiten der Band.

Eine zweite Single ist nun in Form des Lyric-Videos „La Orden del Yelmo Negro“ abrufbereit.

Die erste Auskopplung „Pestilencia“ handelt von der Pest und ihrer Auswirkung auf Spanien.

Produziert und gemischt wurde „Alcázares“ von Sébastian Camhi, das Mastering übernahm Jacob Hansen. Das Artwork gestalteten Johann Bodin und Xavier Ribeiro.

Die Psychedelic Sludge Metal-Band WHEN THE DEADBOLT BREAKS hat mit „Burning Zozobra“ eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums „In The Glow Of The Vatican Fire“ veröffentlicht.

„Kürzlich erfuhren wir von einem Fest in Santa Fe, das auf die frühen 1920er Jahre zurückgeht und bei dem eine riesige Marionette angezündet wird, um die Düsternis und Traurigkeit für ein weiteres Jahr zu vertreiben. Die Geschichte hinter dieser Tradition hat uns in vielerlei Hinsicht sehr berührt. Die Musik selbst wurde hauptsächlich von unserem Bassisten Steve geschrieben, und als die Musik zusammenkam, schien das Thema ‚Burning Zozobra‘ einfach perfekt zu passen“, erklärt Gitarrist und Sänger Aaron Lewis.

Mit dem neuen Album begegnet die US-amerikanische Band aus Connecticut auch ihrem 20-jährigen Jubiläum. Inspiriert von der unendlichen Fähigkeit des Menschen zur Grausamkeit, beschwöre das Album die Betäubung des menschlichen Mitgefühls, die Trauer toter Blätter und die ewige Wut verachteter Götter.

„In The Glow Of The Vatican Fire“ wurde von James Plotkin gemastert und wird am 27. Juni 2025 via Argonauta Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track „The Chaos Of Water“ zu hören.

Bereits ihr Debüt konnte mich voll überzeugen. Hier war alles stimmig… und zwar im tiefstem Sinne der Bedeutung! Nun legt die Formation aus Neunkirchen nach, mit einem Konzeptalbum par excellence. Das zweiköpfiges Darkrock-Projekt aus dem Saarland, bestehend aus Jens Usner (Text, Komposition und Gesang) und Schlagzeuger Markus, kann also auch mit dem zweitem Werk begeistern

Samtene Akustikgitarren (ent)führen ins Jahr 1918. Das Ende des ersten Weltkrieges ist erste Station dieses Konzeptalbums. In Kurzform die Geschichte:
Ein deutscher Militärpfarrer, dessen Gemahlin die Französin Marie an der spanischen Grippe verstirbt, bricht mit seinem Glauben an einen gerechten Gott und wendet sich einem Seher zu, der ihm verspricht, seine Frau aus dem Totenreich zurückzuholen. Kann dieses Vorhaben gelingen, oder ist der Protagonist nur einem Scharlatan aufgesessen?

Während das leicht bedrückende Intro spannend die Ohren wie Kinderaugen auf Empfang stellt, überzeugt das folgende, emotional „Marie“, mit betörender Melodielinie, während eingängig erzählt wird, wie ihr Geliebter die Kriegsszenerie in einem Brief schildert. „Mon Signore“ erzählt die Geschichte weiter, die jetzt schon galant zwischen Trauer und Hoffnung schwingt. Es beschreibt die bildstarke Situation, wie Marie am Fenster sitzend sehnsüchtig auf ihren Liebsten wartet und wenige Zeit später an der Spanischen Grippe verstirbt. Im Mittelteil jagt ein Hardrock-Gitarren-Soli die Melodie. Im beiliegenden Booklet wird die Geschichte begleitend erzählt bzw. erklärt. „Vater unser“ berichtet dann von Christians Rückkehr und der Abschwur von Gott. Die anschließenden Songs „Dunkelheit“ und „Babylon“ beschäftigen sich mit den sogenannten goldenen 20ern. „Propheten“ ist in sich etwas krachiger und teils heftiger inszeniert. Ein klangvolles Ereignis liefert das verspielt dargebotene „In alle Ewigkeit“, dessen Essenz ein perfekter Refrain und dieser Gesang ist, wobei die Stimmbänder einen leichten Trauerflor beherbergen.

Im Mittelpunkt und für mich zentraler Höhepunkt ist das durchdringende „La Seance“, dessen kraftvolle Darbietung von exzessiven Saiten begleitet wird und die perfekte Vorbereitung für das heimelige, mit reichlich Darkness gesegnete „Begegnung“ darstellt. Diese wundervolle, erhabene Form des ganz leicht kitschigen Momentums der Gefühlswelt berührt zutiefst. Dieses wunderschöne Kleinod wird dann auch passend von weiblichem Gesang sehnsuchtsvoll begleitet.

Mit „Winternacht“ haut man wieder die Gitarren in die Szenerie und begeistert mit einer Härte, deren samtener Schatten trotz gut gesuchtem Versteck immer hervor scheint, um im Gesamtbild ein wenig die Melange aus IN EXTREMO und SCHANDMAUL in einem Song perfekt und dank des Gesangs sehr eigenständig zu platzieren. Ohne viel zu verraten, ist „Ewig“ ein trauriger, getragener, mit Akustikgitarre dargebotenes, würdiges Schlussepos

Fazit: Ein ganz und gar großartiges Werk, dessen Eleganz sich liebevoll mit mal getragenen, mal heftigeren Saiten paart. Ein wahrhaft betörender Gesang, der sich hingebungsvoll in die Szenerie der Melodie wirft und die Geschichte bis hin zur Genialität in perfekte Fäden spinnt. Jederzeit erkennbar, die durchdachte Geschichte, der Sinn, der Hintergrund und die in sich wundervoll geschlossene Inszenierung, bei der Gesang, Text, Melodie und die Gesamtheit der Einzelteile ein zum gedanklich-melancholischen Hörerlebnis ganz besonderer Güte wird. Quasi eine inszenierte Rockoper, die sich warm an die teils aktuelle Gefühlslage vieler Menschen schmiegt. (andreas)

Die internationale Hard Rock-Band GODS OF TOMORROW hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Dieser Deal sieht den Release des selbstbetitelten Debütalbums am 11. Juli 2025 vor. Vorab gibt es nach einem Video-Clip zu „Point of No Return“ mit „Fire and Ice“ nun auch ein Lyric-Video.

Die Heavy Metal-Band FURY hat mit „Interceptor“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das fünfte Album der Engländer aus Worcester rund um Bassistin Becky Baldwin (MERCYFUL FATE).

„Interceptor“ wurde von Todd Campbell produziert und wird am 5. September 2025 via Mighty Music erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Alberto Quirantes. Vorab gibt es einen Video-Clip zum Titeltrack.
