11.07.2025 - A Boy and His (Girlfriend’s) Dog — Montreal Alt-Rock Outfit Empty Nesters Debuts Video for “Tilley” Featuring Sasha Cay

Taking my steps to say never
I’ve already kicked it off
Knowing that I won’t be better
I will not come out on top
Montreal’s Empty Nesters, the shape-shifting vehicle for Eric Liao’s genre-bending catharsis, have plunged even deeper into hardcore’s emotional undertow with their latest track, Tilley. A collaboration with indie artist Sasha Cay, this track follows swiftly on the heels of their previous offering, Shangri-Nah, exchanging rage for raw, battered vulnerability.

Tilley opens with a jagged cascade of guitars, Liao’s voice twisting through a tangle of self-doubt and internal collapse. Cay’s riot grrrl-inspired vocal injections slice cleanly through, elevating the track’s sense of spiraling uncertainty. Drummer Matthew Galamaga punctuates each fragmented confession with percussion hits like shattered glass, underscoring the restless anxiety at its core.

Empty Nesters evoke the experimental abrasions of Sonic Youth and Deafheaven’s raw catharsis, filtered through the stark aggression of Zulu and Full of Hell. Tilley thrives precisely because it rejects comfort, embracing instead the raw nerve exposed by personal failure and emotional stasis.

The video is a masterclass in emotional contrast: lo-fi footage of an oblivious puppy frolicking and stumbling through domestic tranquility. Its innocence sits uneasily against the song’s brutal honesty, a surreal juxtaposition of playfulness against lyrical despair. This visual collision underscores themes of self-erasure, fleeting time, and isolation; the dog’s carefree movements subtly mocking human anguish.

“The song title comes from my girlfriend’s friend’s dog, Tilley, who stars in the video,” says Liao. “The song itself has nothing to do with the dog. It’s just a bunch of random clips they recorded together, and I thought it’d be funny to pair those with some pretty existential lyrics. The karaoke edit was inspired by my mom—she loves karaoke and it felt like a sweet way to tie it all together.”

Watch the video for “Tilley” featuring Sasha Cay below:

Empty Nesters’ upcoming EP, Deaf Monks represents their boldest, most expansive statement yet: a vivid reflection of artistic bonds and cultural introspection. Featuring guest contributions from Canadian indie, folk, and rap artists including Clay Pigeon, Sasha Cay, Victor Complex, and Fraud Perry, the EP signals a decisive pivot into communal creativity and personal exploration.

Recent appearances at Pop Montreal, New Colossus, Flourish Festival, Side by Side Weekend, and Suoni Per Il Popolo have seen the band channeling their visceral energy directly to audiences hungry for authenticity.

Deaf Monks drops July 11th via all DSPs: brace for sounds born from collective vulnerability, resonating deepest when experienced unfiltered and face-to-face. You can preview the title track below:

Empty Nesters spoke with Post-Punk.com about their evolution, themes, and collaborations:

Empty Nesters has evolved significantly from its shoegaze beginnings to this new hardcore-punk direction. What prompted that shift, and how has it changed the way you approach collaboration and songwriting?

Empty Nesters has always been about fluidity—genre never felt like a boundary. It started as an ambient experiment, then grew through phases of garage-rock, post-punk, indie, and shoegaze. But with this EP,  Hardcore-punk always spoke to me—its rawness, its urgency—and ironically, Deaf Monks and Nomad were among the first tracks I ever wrote for Empty Nesters. This release felt like the right time to bring that energy to life.

It’s also been my most collaborative project so far. I wanted to push the sound beyond just my own perspective, and that meant inviting people I admire—musicians who don’t normally exist in the hardcore world. I also wanted the EP to sound good—not just DIY rough, but intentional. So I reached out to Shae Brossard at Hotel2Tango to mix Shangri-Nah. My sessions with him were formative—he taught me a lot about shaping space, depth, and aggression in a mix. That mentorship helped me finish the rest of the EP with clarity and purpose.

 “Shangri-Nah” dives into some heavy existential themes—how did your personal experiences and cultural background influence this track?

I was completely burnt out—creatively, emotionally, and just from trying to do everything myself. That feeling of never doing enough lingered in every part of my life. Shangri-Nah became a way to articulate that overwhelming pressure—to always be moving forward, proving something, staying productive. As a child of immigrants, there’s this unspoken expectation to keep grinding without complaint, even if you’re falling apart.

That mindset became internalized, and this track was the first time I allowed myself to scream back at it. Culturally, I’m often quiet and composed. But in this song, I was loud, messy, and confused—and that felt necessary. Collaborating with Clay Pigeon added even more weight; together we captured the feeling of searching for meaning while drowning in pressure.

Deaf Monks brings together voices from across Canada’s indie, folk, and rap scenes. What drew you to work with artists like Sasha Cay, Victor Complex, and Fraud Perry, and how did their contributions shape the final sound of the EP?

A lot of us met at shows—either sharing a bill or hanging out in the same circles. There was always mutual respect and curiosity about each other’s work. When I decided to make this EP, I reached out to Ribbon Skirt, Sasha Cay, Clay Pigeon, Victor Complex, and Fraud Perry with the idea of stepping into a hardcore space together. It was important to me that these collaborations weren’t just features…they were about getting people from completely different sonic backgrounds to scream with me, to embrace chaos.

Each artist brought something unexpected. Tashiina from Ribbon Skirt opened On Read with a haunting melody that made the later explosion hit harder. Sasha’s performance on Tilley added a wounded softness that still cuts. Victor’s energy on the title track was wild and unmatched, and Fraud Perry’s rhythmic precision brought Hoisin into a space between hardcore and dance. They all shaped the EP in ways I couldn’t have done alone, and I think that makes Deaf Monks stand apart from typical hardcore projects.

11.07.2025 - A Vintage Chevy Truck and a Desert Burial — Leknes & The Layoffs Release Video for Gruff Western Ballard “San Miguel”

I fall screaming through cobblestone streets
With the bottle in hand I’m
Accepting defeat
I break all of my fingers
Still I cling to her feet
I bellow out her name as she throws off the sheets
Leknes & The Layoffs, originally from the twilight streets of Trondheim, Norway, have unfurled their debut offering, San Miguel. With a launch ceremony slated at Trondheim’s Dokkhuset on November 15th, frontman Stian Leknes (recently transposed partly to Mexico) has marshaled a gathering of local musical alchemists to conjure a record both cinematic and compellingly bleak. —

San Miguel surges with the force of a late-night reckoning. Leknes’ voice rasps through dense layers of whiskey-soaked regret and dark cabaret swagger, evoking Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen tangled together in a fevered dance overseen by Nick Cave. Saxophones punctuate the scene with coarse, guttural accents, while piano keys drop like tears on tarnished barroom floors, driven forward by jazz-inflected percussion that evokes both chaos and clarity. Leknes drags listeners willingly through purgatory, passion ringing raw and relentless, like traversing infernal circles only to ask for another round.

At its core, San Miguel wrestles with a relentless fixation upon a woman whose allure demolishes defenses and fuels an intoxicating spiral into ruin. This destructive passion sees Leknes metaphorically dying and reviving in an endless cycle of desire, desperation coloring every verse. His life, reduced to a singular craving, embodies a fervent, inescapable obsession.

As Leknes himself succinctly puts it, “San Miguel is a love song for the lost, a tribute to cities that scream, and to obsessions that kill.”

Leknes also directs the accompanying monochrome video, which is filmed and co-produced in Oaxaca by Mala Onda Studios, featuring editing, colour grading, and VFX by Snorre Hovdal. A shadow-laden tale unfolds around a man, shovel in hand, behind the wheel of a vintage Chevy, navigating dusty roads toward a secret-laden destination in the desert. Film noir sensibilities infuse every frame, crafting an atmospheric story heavy with suspense, an eloquent visual counterpart to the intensity pouring forth from the song itself. Think Ingmar Bergman directing a spaghetti western. (Warning: there is graphic violence)

Watch the video for “San Miguel” below:

With San Miguel, Leknes & The Layoffs stake a claim in the darker recesses of our psyches and nightmares, where desire, destruction, and devotion intertwine. This is the first taste of Leknes & The Layoffs from their upcoming album, M.S. Playhead Vol. 1, due out in October.

10.07.2025 - Kansas City Alt-Rockers RXGhost Doomscroll the Consumer Feed in Their Video for “Sponsored Content”

Kansas City’s RxGhost treads the uneasy ground between dreamlike indie shoegaze and the more weighty edges of alternative rock and post-rock, conjuring something that feels both ethereal and solidly present. Frontman Josh Thomas, alongside guitarist Jeremiah James, bassist Chris Smead, and drummer Justin Brooks, weaves a complex interplay that’s equal parts contemplation and compulsion.

Their latest track, Sponsored Content, confronts the paradoxical relationship we have with the devices in our hands and the humans at our side. Sponsored Content is buoyed by a shimmering rhythm section, Smead’s energetic bass dancing deftly beneath layered guitars that recall the pop-inflected jangle of The Cure at their most playful and Deerhunter at their most introspective. Yet beneath its bright exterior, the band illuminates darker truths.

Thomas keenly observes that our digital lives are largely constructed around illusions: “So much of what we encounter online is advertising disguised as user-generated content,” he explains. “We’re being sold to constantly, but it’s packaged as authentic experience.” From people sitting in groups, each scrolling on their own devices, he notes that people might be physically present, but their minds roam elsewhere in the digital landscape – and indeed, digital interactions seem to resonate more deeply than flesh-and-blood conversations, underscoring a troubling comfort found in passive, screen-bound existence.

This track doesn’t shy away from confronting the uncomfortable complicity we share in these modern rituals. The band’s ability to juxtapose infectious musicality against such sobering reflections heightens the effect, reminding us of our own participation in digital illusion. Thomas again points to an emotional numbness fostered by screen dependency: “I feel like there’s something about spending most of your life looking at screens that can make you lose empathy,” he says.

The video shows a typical doomscroll session, the visual static that all of us experience mindlessly. It begs the question, how does the constant flow of horror, political theatre,  nostalgia, laser-focused advertising, and batshit absurdism affect our minds, our hearts, our souls?

Watch the video for “Sponsored Content” below:

In Sponsored Content, RxGhost issues a spirited yet solemn challenge: a call to acknowledge and perhaps even defy the allure of manufactured authenticity. There’s a sly irony in promoting this critique through the channels it scrutinizes, but therein lies its incisive edge. The track implores us to lift our gaze, to reconnect with the living, breathing presence seated quietly beside us.

10.07.2025 - XTR HUMAN Strikes Again in Video for Hard-hitting Industrial-Techno Track “Sledgehammer” Featuring Eddie Dark

In the depths of Berlin’s underground raw area, where dark corners pulse with untamed dancefloor energy, Johannes Stabel’s XTR HUMAN unleashes Sledgehammer, a brutal blast of industrial-infused power. Over the last decade, Stabel has prowled the city’s nocturnal corridors, pilfering various sounds and claiming them for his own. Coldwave’s icy chill, the ruthless pulse of EBM, and post-punk’s angular melodies. These influences collide spectacularly here, sharpened and honed into a relentless force built for movement and liberation.

From the first pulverizing beat, Sledgehammer detonates like a supercollider fuses industrial EBM and Techno, with remixes engineered to ignite the town’s warehouses and abandoned factories in an explosive haze of strobes and sweat. Percussive rhythms pound like heavy machinery, metallic textures spark and scrape, and Stabel’s commanding vocals deliver raw German intensity, each syllable slicing the air with calculated aggression.

The accompanying black-and-white DIY video heightens this fevered mood with delightfully absurd visuals starring Eddie Dark. Set in a stark industrial wasteland, the footage captures the slapstick antics of sledgehammer golf played at manic speed, channeling the playful chaos of silent film comedy. This humourous edge brilliantly amplifies the music’s muscular punch.

Sledgehammer is a relentless jolt to the senses, smashing through convention with steely determination. It pulses with urgency, a bold declaration of liberation and defiance, compelling listeners to cast aside caution and surrender to its potent rhythmic assault.

Preview-Songs gab es vorab mit „Hail Mary“ sowie der ersten Auskopplung „Still Ain’t Dead„.  Jetzt folgt der Clip „Love In The Time Of Apocalypse“.

-> >;From the darkest corners of Oslo, Håndgemeng is back with their new album “Satanic Panic Attack”. “This record is even more ambitious than its predecessor ‘Ultraritual’. No longer constrained by genre or expectations, it presents a more self-defined sound and narrative, as we’ve returned to our earliest influences for inspiration,” says the band. “Satanic Panic Attack” is a concept album that explores the fear and mass hysteria of the 1980s, often referred to as The Satanic Panic — a phenomenon marked by the fear of heavy metal music, devil worship, and accusations of subliminal messages that were perceived as a threat to society. This album is a powerful tribute to the darkness and hysteria of a time when the fear of heavy metal peaked.-> >;
-> >;
With a blend of classic hard rock, tough-as-nails stoner doom, and a splash of brash heavy metal on top, Håndgemeng rises from the cauldron, guitars in hand. Riff after riff after riff, they will shatter all genre boundaries and take you from the depths of hell to the farthest reaches of space. And for heaven’s sake, don’t play this record backwards.

23.06.2025 - Paralyzed - Rumble & Roar 24,99 €

-> >;"The electric four-piece delivers a retro, groove-laden and unwaveringly heavy rock'n'roll formula, with frontman and guitarist Michael Binder's riffing interweaves with psychedelic wah-wah solos combined with powerful gritty vocals, all backed up with Philipp Engelbrecht's stomp-inducing grooves and rhythm guitarist and organ player Caterina Böhner's crunchy power chords and melodies. Drummer Florian Thiele's powerhouse drumming lays the perfect foundation for this unique building.-> >;
-> >;
About their upcoming new album on Ripple Music, the band says ""It is probably our most extensive album to date — raw and wild on the one side and lyrical and dreamy on the other side, with a lot of passion and love for 70s rock Music, heavy blues and stoner rock."""

18.06.2025 - Hebi Katana - Imperfection 24,99 €

-> >;HEBI KATANA are purveyors of a one-of-a-kind fusion of wabi-sabi (Japanese traditional acceptance of transience and imperfection) and heavy doom sounds! Their 2023 album “III” was widely acclaimed in Japan and overseas and ranked #7 on the influential Doom Charts for December 2023, while influential US magazine New Noise Magazine deemed the trio as ""a deadly new force within the Japanese scene"".-> >;
-> >;
Their upcoming fourth full-length ""Imperfection"" — written and recorded in parallel of a tour with the same lineup as ""III"" — features lyrics inspired by Matsuo Basho and Tanizaki Junichiro's “wabi sabi” “beauty of imperfection” and “enso"" based on the unique Japanese spiritual world. This new album refines their signature doom and proto-hard rock sound, merging loud roaring riffs with beaming melodies. Pulsing with sheer intensity and channeling the spirit of the 70s, their dynamics interweave doom metal weight and psychedelic expansiveness while staying true to their dark, shadowy and introspective worldview.-> >;
-> >;
The trio’s chemistry shines as they balance brute force with intricate subtleties, creating a sound that feels both primal and meticulously crafted. ""Imperfection"" marks a bold evolution for HEBI KATANA. Every riff, groove, and vocal line reinforces their identity — a band unafraid to explore darkness while delivering pure, riff-driven power in their own right. Don't wait to join the cult.

10.06.2025 - 10,000 Years - All Quiet On The Final Frontier ab 24,99 €

-> >;Formed in The Year Of The Plague, 2020, 10,000 Years has churned out their signature brand of skullcrushing stonermetal at a relentless pace. Releasing records in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and grabbing a Manifest (swedish independent Grammy) nomination for Best Metal album, the world may not be ready for the insane massiveness that 10,000 Years have in store on latest offering, ”All Quiet On The Final Frontier.” While still very much in the business of stoner metal and with The Riff still reigning supreme, ”All Quiet..." boasts a more melodic approach, a natural evolution which stays true to the essence of the band and makes for their strongest effort yet.

20.05.2025 - Snakemother - Snakemother 24,99 €

-> >;Snakemother weaves doom-laden riffs, hypnotic incantations, and Eastern folk influences into a ritual of transformation. Their debut album is a journey through battle cries (""Goldshields"") invoking strength, and resilience, shadowed trauma and transformation (""Little Lady""), breaking out of limiting cycles (“Circles”), elemental empowerment (""Sacrum""), liberation (""Mu Rise""), deeply rooted in ritualistic and intentional practices, with themes of mysticism and spirituality. (“Ritual”). Their songwriting process involves channeling and ritualistic elements, indicating a profound divine connection.-> >;
-> >;
With mythic storytelling and primal intensity, Snakemother conjures a haunting and cathartic sound, shedding past skins, and invoking the ferocity of the divine feminine. 16.04.2025 - SoftSun - Daylight in the Dark ab 24,99 €

Vocalist and bass player Pia Isaksen grew up in Norway, while Gary Arce and drummer Dan Joeright are based in the Southern California Mojave desert.-> >;
-> >;
The environments they occupy are evident in the beautifully heavy yet ethereal sound of this band. Arce’s dreamscaping cinematic guitar work gives a stark contrast of balance to the heavy melodic bass driven compositions. Pia’s voice, ethereal in nature, levitates the sound and brings a dreamlike shoegaze quality to the songs. Cocteau Twins, True Widow, Yawning Man, Diiv would be appropriate reference points for this unique approach to songwriting."
