Montreal’s Empty Nesters, the shape-shifting vehicle for Eric Liao’s genre-bending catharsis, have plunged even deeper into hardcore’s emotional undertow with their latest track, Tilley. A collaboration with indie artist Sasha Cay, this track follows swiftly on the heels of their previous offering, Shangri-Nah, exchanging rage for raw, battered vulnerability.
Tilley opens with a jagged cascade of guitars, Liao’s voice twisting through a tangle of self-doubt and internal collapse. Cay’s riot grrrl-inspired vocal injections slice cleanly through, elevating the track’s sense of spiraling uncertainty. Drummer Matthew Galamaga punctuates each fragmented confession with percussion hits like shattered glass, underscoring the restless anxiety at its core.
Empty Nesters evoke the experimental abrasions of Sonic Youth and Deafheaven’s raw catharsis, filtered through the stark aggression of Zulu and Full of Hell. Tilley thrives precisely because it rejects comfort, embracing instead the raw nerve exposed by personal failure and emotional stasis.
The video is a masterclass in emotional contrast: lo-fi footage of an oblivious puppy frolicking and stumbling through domestic tranquility. Its innocence sits uneasily against the song’s brutal honesty, a surreal juxtaposition of playfulness against lyrical despair. This visual collision underscores themes of self-erasure, fleeting time, and isolation; the dog’s carefree movements subtly mocking human anguish.
“The song title comes from my girlfriend’s friend’s dog, Tilley, who stars in the video,” says Liao. “The song itself has nothing to do with the dog. It’s just a bunch of random clips they recorded together, and I thought it’d be funny to pair those with some pretty existential lyrics. The karaoke edit was inspired by my mom—she loves karaoke and it felt like a sweet way to tie it all together.”

Empty Nesters’ upcoming EP, Deaf Monks represents their boldest, most expansive statement yet: a vivid reflection of artistic bonds and cultural introspection. Featuring guest contributions from Canadian indie, folk, and rap artists including Clay Pigeon, Sasha Cay, Victor Complex, and Fraud Perry, the EP signals a decisive pivot into communal creativity and personal exploration.
Recent appearances at Pop Montreal, New Colossus, Flourish Festival, Side by Side Weekend, and Suoni Per Il Popolo have seen the band channeling their visceral energy directly to audiences hungry for authenticity.

Empty Nesters spoke with Post-Punk.com about their evolution, themes, and collaborations:
Empty Nesters has evolved significantly from its shoegaze beginnings to this new hardcore-punk direction. What prompted that shift, and how has it changed the way you approach collaboration and songwriting?
Empty Nesters has always been about fluidity—genre never felt like a boundary. It started as an ambient experiment, then grew through phases of garage-rock, post-punk, indie, and shoegaze. But with this EP, Hardcore-punk always spoke to me—its rawness, its urgency—and ironically, Deaf Monks and Nomad were among the first tracks I ever wrote for Empty Nesters. This release felt like the right time to bring that energy to life.
It’s also been my most collaborative project so far. I wanted to push the sound beyond just my own perspective, and that meant inviting people I admire—musicians who don’t normally exist in the hardcore world. I also wanted the EP to sound good—not just DIY rough, but intentional. So I reached out to Shae Brossard at Hotel2Tango to mix Shangri-Nah. My sessions with him were formative—he taught me a lot about shaping space, depth, and aggression in a mix. That mentorship helped me finish the rest of the EP with clarity and purpose.
“Shangri-Nah” dives into some heavy existential themes—how did your personal experiences and cultural background influence this track?
I was completely burnt out—creatively, emotionally, and just from trying to do everything myself. That feeling of never doing enough lingered in every part of my life. Shangri-Nah became a way to articulate that overwhelming pressure—to always be moving forward, proving something, staying productive. As a child of immigrants, there’s this unspoken expectation to keep grinding without complaint, even if you’re falling apart.
That mindset became internalized, and this track was the first time I allowed myself to scream back at it. Culturally, I’m often quiet and composed. But in this song, I was loud, messy, and confused—and that felt necessary. Collaborating with Clay Pigeon added even more weight; together we captured the feeling of searching for meaning while drowning in pressure.
Deaf Monks brings together voices from across Canada’s indie, folk, and rap scenes. What drew you to work with artists like Sasha Cay, Victor Complex, and Fraud Perry, and how did their contributions shape the final sound of the EP?
A lot of us met at shows—either sharing a bill or hanging out in the same circles. There was always mutual respect and curiosity about each other’s work. When I decided to make this EP, I reached out to Ribbon Skirt, Sasha Cay, Clay Pigeon, Victor Complex, and Fraud Perry with the idea of stepping into a hardcore space together. It was important to me that these collaborations weren’t just features…they were about getting people from completely different sonic backgrounds to scream with me, to embrace chaos.
Each artist brought something unexpected. Tashiina from Ribbon Skirt opened On Read with a haunting melody that made the later explosion hit harder. Sasha’s performance on Tilley added a wounded softness that still cuts. Victor’s energy on the title track was wild and unmatched, and Fraud Perry’s rhythmic precision brought Hoisin into a space between hardcore and dance. They all shaped the EP in ways I couldn’t have done alone, and I think that makes Deaf Monks stand apart from typical hardcore projects.

“Looking back to my childhood and what an album meant, it was something solid and permanent, completed and curated. You could hold it in your hands, put it on the record player and listen to it in its entirety. In this era of disposable moments and ever rolling, broken news, I wanted to inject something whole into the ether, a permanent moment in the long stream of my music career in all that it’s been.
All of us will be many things in our lives. Over the years I’ve worn many different outfits, had many reincarnations, worked in many different bands, and so it should be. All of those things were me as I was at that moment, somewhere along the timeline of my life. What I wanted to offer right now is this moment and in it, pure, clutter free me, so here it is.
I am Jessica Winter, this is my first album, and I dedicate it purely to LOVE.”

Jessica Winter is a British singer, songwriter, and producer known for her experimental pop music that blends elements from various genres, including pop, industrial, and indie. Often compared to the likes of Kylie, Robyn, and Grimes, to date, Jessica has released a series of EPs, including Limerence (2023), More Sad Music (2021), and Sad Music (2020), each showcasing her ability to infuse unconventional themes and introspective lyrics into pop song structures.

Die Extreme Progressive Metal-Band ABSTRACTED hat mit dem Lyric-Video zu „Languish“ – mit Chaney Crabb (ENTHEOS) – eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums „Hiraeth“ veröffentlicht. Es ist nach „Atma Conflux“ (2022) das zweite Album der Brasilianer, die in der Zwischenzeit das Line-Up umgekrempelt haben.

Die Industrial Metal / Post-Punk-Band BLACK MAGNET hat mit dem Lyric-Video zu „Night Tripping“ eine dritte Single ihres kommenden Albums „Megamantra“ veröffentlicht. Davor ist mit dem Video-Clip zu „Better Than Love“ eine zweite Single erschienen.
„“Better Than Love“ ist eine gewaltsame Bestätigung der Identität durch Auslöschung, bei der der Hunger nach Leben mit dem Traum vom Tod kollidiert, und was übrig bleibt, ist etwas Stärkeres, Schärferes und jenseits der Einfachheit von Hass oder Zuneigung. Beherrschung durch Verwandlung“, erklärt Sänger James Hammontree.
Es ist nach „Hallucination Scene“ (2020) und „Body Prophecy“ (2022) das dritte Album der US-amerikanischen Band, die einst von James Hammontree (Ex-MAMMOTH GRINDER) als Solo-Projekt gegründet wurde und inzwischen zu einem Quartett angewachsen ist.
„Megamantra“ wurde von Sanford Parker (BURIED AT SEA, Ex-MINSK) gemixt und von Vlado Meller (u.a. für SLAYER tätig) gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Jesse Draxler (u.a. für DISSIMULATOR tätig). Release-Termin ist der 25. Juli 2025 via Federal Prisoner. Vorab gibt es zu „Endless“ einen weiteren Video-Clip.
„In ‚Endless‘ geht es darum, die Identität durch schiere Willenskraft zurückzuerobern – indem man Wahnvorstellungen durchbricht, sich dem Mitleid verweigert und zur rohen, gnadenlosen Wahrheit dessen steht, was man ist. 11.07.2025 - VIOGRESSION: Thaumaturgic Veil [Eigenproduktion]
Über 35 Jahre hat die Band VIOGRESSION schon auf dem Buckel und in dieser Zeit – mit einer langen Pause dazwischen – bislang drei Alben veröffentlicht. Nun folgt mit „Thaumaturgic Veil“ das vierte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Milwaukee. Dass die Death Metal-Band bislang nicht vom Vampster-Radar erfasst worden ist, nimmt etwas wunder, schließlich sind wir hier – einen heimlichen Rundblick durch die virtuellen Redaktionsräume machend – doch fast alle etwas old school (in der Altersstruktur). Diese Old-Schooligkeit trifft auch auf VIOGRESSION zu: sowohl was die Altersstruktur der Musiker betrifft, als auch angesichts der Musik, schließlich greift das Quintett rund um Sänger Brian DeNeffe, dem einzig verbliebenen Original-Mitglied seit den 90ern, den Stil von anno dazumal auf, als bei uns OBITUARY und MORGOTH ganz hoch im Kurs standen.
VIOGRESSION verbinden gewürgte und leidende Vocals mit peitschenden Becken
Angelehnt an diese Namen kann man sich auch auszugsweise die Musik auf „Thaumaturgic Veil“ vorstellen. Durchzogen von sehr vielen Interludes packen VIOGRESSION teilweise zäh dahin kriechende Death Metal-Stücke aus, bei denen dann kurzzeitig das Tempo angezogen wird und die Lead-Gitarre kreischend dazwischenfunkt („Renumeration“, „Superposition“). Dazu die gewürgten und beinahe leidenden Vocals sowie ein Sound mit peitschenden Becken und fertig ist ein klangliches Abbild einer vergangenen Zeit.
Auf „Thaumaturgic Veil“ vermisst man das Album-Feeling
Doch ganz so einfach wollen wir es VIOGRESSION auch nicht machen, schließlich gibt es auch ein paar Durchhänger, als dass Songs wie „Travesty ov darkness“ oder das leicht thrashige „Pummeled“ nicht ganz den Punkt treffen und nicht unter die Haut gehen wollen. Weiterhin verfolgt die Band ein durchaus herausforderndes Ziel, als dass das Album das Zusammenspiel von Bewusstsein, Unterbewusstsein und Materie erforschen will und die Existenz dabei als ein binäres System, das durch Schwingungsfrequenzen geformt wird, betrachtet. Um dies zu untermauern, wurden unter anderem die meditativen Interludes und deren Frequenzen eingebettet. Aber bei dieser Challenge kann ich der Band nicht folgen. Das macht es dann auch schwer, einen Roten Faden zu ergreifen, an dem man sich entlang hangeln kann. Somit geht das Album als Ganzes etwas unter und es bleiben die Tracks einfach nur lose als solche stehen. Schade.

ASHES OF ARES veröffentlichen am 18. Juli 2025 ein neues Album, „New Messiahs“ erscheint via ROAR als CD, digital und in verschiedenen Vinyl-Auflagen. Mit „Keep On Walkin‚“ gibt es nun ein weiteres Video vom Album.
„“Keep On Walkin'“ ist ein Lied, das ich über Elternschaft geschrieben habe, als ich über meine Beziehung zu meinen Söhnen nachdachte“, sagt Sänger Matt Barlow. „Inspiriert wurde ich, als ich eines Tages einen Spaziergang machte und diesen Spaziergang als Maß für eine Lebensspanne betrachtete. Ich wollte die Geschichte mit den ersten Schritten meines Sohnes beginnen und sie mit meinem Tod beenden, damit sie ihren eigenen Weg gehen können.“

„WAKE OF VULTURES“ basiert auf der Idee „Geteiltes Leid ist halbes Leid“, geht aber noch einen Schritt weiter. Es ist die Kehrseite der Gesellschaft unglücklicher Menschen. Sobald man Teil dieser Gruppe ist, ist man entweder ein Geier oder das elende Stück Fleisch, an dem sie sich laben. Noch so eine warnende Geschichte … Ich erkenne ein Muster.“
Das neue Album der Power Metal-Band um Matt Barlow und Freddie Vidales (beide ex-ICED EARTH) wurde aufgenommen und gemastert von Byron Filson im Villain Recording in Phoenix, Arizona. Das Artwork ist von Kamil Pietruczynik.

Die Blackened Thrash Metal-Band DESASTER hat mit „Kill All Idols“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das zehnte Album der Deutschen aus Koblenz und folgt dem 2021er-Album „Churches Without Saints“ nach.
„Alle ‚Vorbilder‘, egal ob sie politisch, religiös, sozial, wirtschaftlich oder anderweitig motiviert sind, haben nur ihre eigene Agenda und ihren eigenen ‚Machterhalt‘ im Sinn“, erklärt Sänger Sataniac. „Der Albumtitel ist nichts anderes als eine Aufforderung, selbst zu denken. Oder es zumindest zu versuchen. Realistisch betrachtet ist das Geld die letzte verbliebene Gottheit und das große „Vorbild“ zumindest für große Teile unserer säkularen Gesellschaften. Diese Tatsache ist tiefgreifend. Geld und lineare Gier sind keine guten, zielführenden oder gar nachhaltigen „Vorbilder“. Aber was kann man schon erwarten? Immerhin wurde das alles in nur sieben Tagen produziert und herausgeschleudert. Vielleicht hätte sich der allmächtige Schöpfer ein wenig mehr Zeit nehmen sollen.“
„Kill All Idols“ wurde im eigenen Proberaum aufgenommen und von Jan „Janosch“ Gensheimer gemixt und von Greg Wilkinson gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Chris Moyen. Vorab gibt es den Track „Towards Oblivion“ zu hören.
„Es ist ein allgemeines Loblied auf den Homo sapiens, der nichts unversucht lässt, um „vergessen“ zu werden, indem er seine eigenen Grundlagen zerstört“, sagt Sänger Sataniac. Aber wir dürfen nicht vergessen. Wir sind nicht in der Lage, die Erde zu zerstören. Wir können diese schöne bewohnbare Zone nur für uns selbst unbewohnbar machen.“

Die Post Hardcore-Band DAYSEEKER hat zum Titeltrack ihres kommenden Albums „Creature In The Black Night“ einen Video-Clip veröffentlicht.
„“Creature In The Black Night“ ist der dunklere Teil deines Gewissens, der dich überwältigt“, sagt Sänger Rory Rodriguez über den Song. „Es geht um den Rausch, nach dem man süchtig ist und den man nicht ignorieren kann.“
Zuvor hat die Band mit „Pale Moonlight“ den Opener mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht.
„In ‚Pale Moonlight‘ geht es darum, sich seinen Lastern hinzugeben“, sagt Sänger Rory Rodriguez. „Es geht um die Abhängigkeit von Dingen, von denen man weiß, dass sie schädlich für einen sind – aber man kann sich einfach nicht dagegen wehren.“
„Creature In The Black Night“ wurde von Daniel Braunstein produziert und von Zakk Cervini gemixt. Release-Termin ist der 24. Oktober 2025 via Spinefarm.

Die Black / Death Metal-Band REVELATOR hat mit „Light The Devil’s Fire“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach zwei Demos das erste Album der Kanadier aus Edmonton rund um Lee Norland (BEGRIME EXEMIOUS) und wird am 12. September 2025 via Nameless Grave Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track „By The Whip“ zu hören.
„Light The Devil’s Fire“ wurde von Rob Lawless aufgenommen, von Derek Orthner gemixt und von Drew Copland gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Christine Angela.

DIAMOND HEAD haben ihr Livealbum „Live and Electric“ am 11. Juli 2025 veröffentlicht. Es kommt als Doppel-Vinyl, CD sowie Digital. Zu „The Messenger“ gibt es nun einen animierten Video-Clip.
Auch das Video zur Single „Helpless“ kann man sich bereits anschauen. Gitarrist Brian Tatler erinnert sich: „Im September 1979 begann der Song mit einem Riff, den ich mit einer obskuren Punkband spielte. Der Song war immer sehr stark live und einer der Songs, der immer in der Setlist war. METALLICA hat diesen Song dann 1987 gecovert und machte ihn damit einem ganz anderen Metal Publikum zugänglich.“
DIAMOND HEAD liefern ersten Song von „Live and Electric“
„Live And Electric“ wurde 2022 auf der UK-Tour mit SAXON aufgenommen und umfasst u.a. Auftritte in Aberdeen, Blackburn, York, Cambridge, Cardiff und Bexhill. „Es ist das erste Live Album von Diamond Head seit 20 Jahren und das erste Mal, dass wir alle 14 Shows aufnehmen konnten, um sie dann nach den besten Performances zu durchsuchen“, sagt Tatler.
