Die Songs wurden für “Inspiratio Profanus” neu gemastert.

Conceived amidst the sunlit days of 2019’s summer in Vancouver, Ringfinger treads the nebulous boundaries separating darkwave from post-punk. Drawing equal inspiration from the chilly embrace of Canadian winters, vintage horror cinema, and the venerated pioneers of their musical realm, they craft their sound with the enveloping embrace of chorused guitars, set against the backdrop of expansive synthesizer tableaux and vocals bathed in delay.

This dark music duo, underpinned by the mechanical heartbeats of drum machines, showcases the talents of Hannah Dow-Kenny, who lends her touch to the bass, synthesizer, and vocals, and Mason McMorris, who melds the strains of guitar and synthesizer, complementing with his own voice.

Their debut album, In A Black Frame, is an eleven-track exploration of ethereal dark post-punk. As they gear up for their impending European tour, Drab Majesty has unveiled a video for Cape Perpetua from their latest EP, An Object in Motion, available through Dais Records.

This recent release signifies a riveting new era for Drab Majesty. During a 2021 sojourn to the secluded town of Yachats in coastal Oregon, Deb Demure found inspiration in the distinct tones of a bowl-shaped 12-string Ovation acoustic/electric guitar, adding a neo-psychedelic touch. Immersed in the natural surroundings, mornings were spent hiking through rain, while afternoons saw Deb engrossed in ambient guitar sessions, embracing intuitive musical explorations.

Cape Perpetua, one of the two instrumental pieces on the EP, exemplifies the album’s eclectic range. It offers glistening acoustic strums, harmoniously bent by delay, blending hints of raga with daydream. As melodies ebb and flow, the song finds itself poised between rustic American artistry, introspective neo-folk, and a bucolic sense of sorrow. Infusing baroque and classical touches, the piece unfurls into grand, gothic narratives, distinguishing itself from the ordinary.

The track’s visual companion, captured on Super 8 film, enhances its dreamlike, psychedelic essence, adding a nostalgic dimension that warps time.

Cape Perpetua is a slow-rolling track with tessellating psychedelia which inspired me to channel my Joseph Cornell and late-era Brakhage appreciation,” says director John Elliott (Emeralds, Imaginary Softwoods). “The goal was to capture simple objects moving in and out of stillness reflecting the ebb and flow of the widescreen guitar patterns. Upon discovering a partially dilapidated cemetery near my house, I found spinning pinwheels askew in the ground and late blooming flowers laced with synthetic flowers, all against a backdrop of partly cloudy skies and autumnal foliage. We explored this simple and profound surrealism by performing in-camera lap-dissolves and double exposures in an attempt to marry the ethereal magic of the song with the film we shot. The simplistic nature of Super 8 camera lenses paired with the imperfect nature of Super 8mm film creates a window into a world that feels like a distant cluster of memories, or a dream-like state complete with blurred edges and extemporaneous world-building.”

In the heart of Los Angeles, Andrew Clinco unveiled his mesmerizing musical brainchild, Drab Majesty, in 2011. Best recognized for commanding the drum set in the band Marriages, Clinco immersed himself into this endeavor, assuming the genderfluid role of Deb Demure. As the project took shape, Mona D (born Alex Nicolaou), a gifted keyboardist and vocalist, joined the group in 2016, introducing an extra layer of complexity to their sound.

Since partnering with Dais Records, Drab Majesty has spawned three thought-provoking albums: their hauntingly beautiful debut, Careless (2015), the introspective journey of The Demonstration (2017), and the evocative Modern Mirror (2019).

An Object In Motion was written during a 2021 retreat to the remote coastal Oregon town of Yachats, where Deb Demure leaned into the neo-psychedelic resonance of a uniquely bowl-shaped 12-string Ovation acoustic/electric guitar. After early morning hikes in the rain, Deb would record ambient guitar experiments the rest of the day, tapping into “flow states,” letting the sound lead the way. These sessions were then refined or recreated, and later elevated further with key collaborations by Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Justin Meldal-Johnson (Beck, M83, Air), and Ben Greenberg (Uniform, Circular Ruin Studio). 

An Object In Motion is true to its title, capturing the chrysalis moment of an artist evolving, reborn and untethered, silhouetted against an open horizon. It presents a showcase of potential futures from Drab’s evolving domain, their sound poised to bloom at the precipice of transformation.

(Photo by Eugene Richards) Vince Clarke (Erasure, Yazoo, Depeche Mode) has shared “White Rabbit”, the latest track to be released from his forthcoming debut solo album, “Songs of Silence”. “Songs of Silence” is a 10-track ambient album which will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally via Mute on 17 November 2023.

In addition, Vince Clarke’s debut solo performance has been confirmed for the LSE, London on Friday 17 November, with a Rough Trade East Q&A confirmed for Sunday 19 November.

“White Rabbit” comes accompanied by an animation by Daniele Arcuri looking at the darkness surrounding our relationship with technology. Daniele Arcuri explains, “I wanted to openly address the themes of hyper-connectivity, anxiety, apathy, and voyeurism towards others’ suffering. This video is a bold and thought-provoking reflection on how technology is eerily shaping our existence, and challenges viewers to contemplate the human cost of an ever-connected world.”

Recorded in his home studio in New York, and featuring photography and artwork by Eugene Richards, work on the album began as a distraction during lockdown, a chance to finally get his head around the possibilities of Eurorack, a modular synthesiser format famed for its addictive and limitless configurations. Alone in the studio, Clarke set himself two rules: first, that the sounds he generated for the album would come solely from Eurorack, and second, that each track would be based around one note, maintaining a single key throughout.

SILENCE IN THE SNOW sind eine der wenigen aktuellen Bands, die den klassischen Dark Wave und Post-Punk mit emotionaler musikalischer Intelligenz verbinden. Mittlerweile ist das amerikanische Duo von Oakland nach Arcata im Norden Kaliforniens umgezogen. Die Stadt liegt nicht nur an der malerischen Arcata Bay, die in den Pazifischen Ozean mündet, sondern sie ist auch an Land von Nationalparks und Redwood-Wäldern umgeben. Der Umzug mag zum Teil erklären, warum "Ghost Eyes", das dritte Album der Band, mit einem besonders warmen, organischen Sound und dichten Klangtexturen aufwartet. "Ghost Eyes" trägt eine musikalische Weisheit und Reife in sich, die die melodischen, verträumten, ausladenden und eindringlichen Songs des Albums vor einem stilistischen Hintergrund, der zwischen Dark Wave, Post-Punk und Alternative Rock angesiedelt ist, deutlich hervortreten lässt. Es gibt Anklänge an THE CURE, JOY DIVISION, SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES, THE MISSION und sogar KILLING JOKE. SACRIFIRE ist eine “All-Star-Band” aus dem (mehr oder weniger) Undergound.
2019 gegründet von Jochen Trunk (Disbelief) und Dirk Weiß (Warpath) hat man im Folgejahr Fabian Regmann (Décembre Noir) als festen Schlagzeuger mit aufgenommen. In dem Jahr kam auch die selbstbetitelte EP heraus.
Live wird man von Musikern von Detraktor und Soul Demise unterstützt.
Jetzt erschien grad das Debütalbum über Apostasy Records.
Gleich der erste Durchlauf ließ mich aufhorchen. Eigentlich bin ich den Weiten des Gothic und Doom (bis auf ein paar Ausnahmen) gar nicht unterwegs, aber „The Art Of Decay“  hat direkt bei mir gezündet. Die druckvolle Produktion (die Basedrum klingt großartig), bei der Jörg Uken in seiner Soundlodge mal wieder großartige Arbeit geleistet hat und die packenden Melodien hatten mich direkt überzeugt. Der dunkle cleane Gesang von Dirk, der bei den Thrashern Warpath nunmal ganz anders klingt, macht mir teilweise eine regelrechte Gänsehaut und lässt mich immer wieder an Sundowns „Design 19“ denken (eine der wenigen Scheiben des groben Genres, die mich schon damals gepackt haben), vor allem beim Opener „Into Infinity“ und beim folgenden Track „Emptiness“, werde ich an die Schweden, vor allem an deren Song „Synergy“ erinnert.
Ohne, dass man jetzt wirkliche Parallelen ziehen könnte, muss ich allerdings auch immer wieder an Paradise Lost oder auch Type O Negative und hier und da auch an Katatonia denken. Da kann man dann sicherlich sehen, dass dieses Genre nicht mein Alldayplay ist.
Jochen von Disbelief, der die Scheibe musikalisch geschrieben hat, konnte sich nicht ganz von seiner anderen Band lösen, was ich allerdings mehr als nur gut finde, da ich Disbelief absolut liebe. Jedoch sind Melodien wie in „Arms Of Morpheus“ dann wieder weit davon entfernt, was den Reiz ausmacht. Auch das für meine Verhältnisse, bzw. Kenntnisse größtenteils eher schnelle Schlagzeug in diesem Genre, was hier dann den Death ausmacht, gefällt mir total gut und bringt mir auch ein gewisses
Disbelief-Feeling!
Also wie gesagt, bin ich selten in diesem Genre unterwegs, aber das Debüt von SACRIFIRE hat mich direkt gepackt und ist auch nach mindestens schon 15 Durchläufen immer noch interessant. Die Scheibe hat offiziell 10 Tracks bei 46 Minuten. Wer allerdings bei Spotify hört bekommt 4 Songs in 20 Minuten obendrauf. Lohnt sich vor allem wegen dem wirklich schönen „As If You Never Existed“.

Truman gradually becomes aware that his whole life is a televised lie. His journey to uncover the truth, and his desire to escape his contrived reality, culminates in him confronting his fears and the manipulations of those in control. Those watching his life story wear pins emblazoned with the quote, “HOW WILL IT END?”

The film, conceived long before the rise of reality television, social media, and artificial intelligence, offers a sharp critique of the invasion of privacy, media manipulation, the sense of self and reality, climate change, and consumerism. It also touches upon social polarization with a clarion call to challenge the structures that seek to control or deceive.

From the cultural crossroads of Antwerp, musician and visual artist Youniss delves into a profound introspection of identity and artistic utterance. He metaphorically dons the shoes of Truman Burbank with the blistering, blustery How Will It End? as he navigates the disconcerting, pervasive sentiment of being observed as a black individual with an Arabic moniker within a Western context.

Drawing inspiration from the unhinged vocal energy of Birthday Party’s Nick Cave, the innovative post-jazz sounds of Pere Ubu, and the unbridled anarchy of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Youniss gives voice to a poignant question that lingers with sharp resonance: Can one ever overcome the weight of persistent prejudice?

The track emanates the sensation of an encroaching barrier, where deep, chant-like vocals serve as an organic bass during its chorus. The rhythm, underscored by a relentless marching drum pattern, compels forward movement without reprieve. Amidst this, hauntingly expressive vocals intertwine with stark guitar resonances and untamed percussion, immersing listeners into its depths. This musical piece stands as an aural manifestation of Youniss’s deep ruminations on existence.

Filmed in the Antwerp club Trix, the video awkwardly gets close into Youniss’s face as he relentlessly asks, “How will it end?”



In “White Space,” Youniss grapples with personal anxieties birthed from the tumultuous wake of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

The conceptual underpinnings of “White Space,” both musically and visually, stem from the discomfort of misrecognition and the elusive quest for belonging. While his inaugural self-titled album celebrated the tender nuances of his heritage, this subsequent offering delves into his navigation of a predominantly white cultural landscape, detailing the intricate performances an artist of color might undertake. Despite its brevity at just 20 minutes, the record possesses an enduring intensity, reminiscent of a punk-rock relic from the 1990s, encouraging repeated listens to uncover its emotional nucleus.

Youniss’s latest creation challenges his own creative methods, experimenting with self-mastered guitar sequences, venturing into new vocal territories, and incorporating authentic drum patterns.

Rising from the vibrant Belgian underground milieu, recent times have witnessed Youniss collaborating with notable up-and-comers like Porcelain_ID, IKRAAAN, and Shaka Shams. His compositions have provided the soundtrack for the evocative dance production “Bully,” choreographed by Tomas Ntamashimikiro and showcased at venues like OPEK and KVS. Wearing his visual artist hat, Youniss recently joined forces with the Belgian-Iraqi ensemble, Use Knife. He contributed the artistry for their newest album, ‘The Shedding of the Skin’, released under VIERNULVIER RECORDS. In the ever-evolving dance of human interaction, separation can subtly alter the familiar rhythms of two souls. A chance encounter with an old acquaintance on a bustling avenue or during a night on the town might require a delicate reintroduction. Or…perhaps you might prefer to remember them as they were, safely tucked away in your heart, before it all went wrong. How does wisdom and time shift our perspective? Do we truly change?

In a recent melodic collaboration, dream pop talents Stray Fossa (under Born Losers Records) and kelz (from Bayonet Records) elegantly muse upon these very introspections in their bittersweet new single, “Playing Strangers.”

Brothers Nick and Will Evans formed Stray Fossa with Zach Blount in early 2018. With collaborative songwriting on scattered iPhone notes and shared project folders, the band managed to virtually re-create their attic studio.

“We made a conscious effort to let the initial emotion become the final product,” Will Evans reflects on its production. “This often meant mixing in audio from the original demos, instead of re-recording anything.”

The album is a bold evolution sonically and thematically from the band’s quarantine-era debut, With You For Ever (2021, self-released). If their first album struggles with the collective anxiety, isolation and confinement of that period, the band’s dancier, more expansive follow-up, could be considered a reemergence; a cautious shift towards anticipation.

kelz’s frothy dream-pop music is an introduction to the mind of Vietnamese-American producer and multi-instrumentalist Kelly Truong. Written and recorded in her Orange County, California home, her songs tell a nostalgic yet hopeful story in effervescent electro-pop.

Mit ihrem 2019er Album „Resist“ haben sich WITHIN TEMPTATION an mehreren Stellen neu erfunden bzw. ihren Sound modernisiert. Diesen Trend setzen sie auch auf ihrem neuen Werk „Bleed Out“ fort, von dem einiges an Material bereits seit 2020 kontinuierlich veröffentlicht wurde. Und das machen sie nun alles in Eigenregie. Völlig unabhängig veröffentlichen sie ihre Musik nun selbst, ohne dass eine traditionelle Plattenfirma Zeitpläne oder Veröffentlichungszeiträume vorgibt. Die Band erklärt:
„Mit all den Streaming-Diensten ist es einfacher selbst zu veröffentlichen. Das, in Kombination mit der Tatsache, dass wir die Rechte an unserer Musik zurückerhalten haben, bedeutet, dass wir unsere Karriere selbst in der Hand haben. Plattenfirmen sind eine Maschinerie, die Arbeit mit ihnen braucht Zeit und das begann uns ein wenig zu nerven. Wir wollen Dinge ausprobieren, wenn wir es wollen und nicht warten müssen.“
„Es bedeutet, dass wir schnell arbeiten können“, fügt Sharon hinzu. „Labels neigen dazu, traditionell zu sein, aber dies sind keine traditionellen Zeiten, und die Art und Weise, wie Menschen Musik finden und genießen, entwickelt sich ständig weiter.“

Wie erwähnt, kennt man evtl. bereits den Titeltrack und einige weitere Stücke und so dürfte die Ausrichtung des Albums für Fans keine große Überraschung mehr sein. Aus meiner Sicht sind mit „Bleed out“, „Don’t pray for me“, „Shed my skin“ sowie der aktuellsten Auskopplung „Ritual“ die besten Tracks schon bekannt. Allerdings ist der Rest des Albums deswegen keinesfalls schlecht, sondern es passt schon alles zusammen, bietet zumindest für mich aber keine echten Highlights mehr.

Die Lyrics des Albums behandeln gesellschaftliche Themen, z.B. die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Krieg in der Ukraine, die Notlage der Frauen, die im Iran für ihre Freiheit kämpfen, und die komplexen Fragen, die mit dem Recht der Frau auf freie Wahl verbunden sind. Oder aber auch einfach mal Slasher Spaß mit „Ritual“, der von Quentin Tarantino’s Film „From Dusk Till Dawn“ inspiriert ist, der von einer scheinbar normale Autoreise handelt, die sich in eine Vampirjägerparty verwandelt. „Es ist ein lustiger Track über Verführung“, erklärt Sharon „denn es geht darum, dass eine Frau in einer von Männern dominierten Welt die Macht übernimmt und Initiative ergreift.“.

Mit den neuen Tracks gehen die Holländer den mutig Schritt vom Vorgänger weiter, etwas weg vom „Female“ Symphonic Metal, dafür mit einem modernen Sound, der trotzdem immer noch typisch nach WITHIN TEMPTATION klingt. Allerdings gefällt mir „Resist“ im direkten Vergleich zum neuen Werk etwas besser, hat mich mehr geflasht. „Bleed Out“ ist trotzdem ein richtig gutes Album, das Fans auf jeden Fall entzücken wird, es fehlt mir persönlich nur der letzte Kick, den es beim letzten Mal gab. „The song was written by me and Thomas Vikström and it has a lot of Middle Eastern influences in the music. Lyrically it deals with the ruler of the Underworld in the Turkic mythology called Erlik. Parts of the song is in Turkish language. I collaborated with Soner Canözer from the now defunct Turkish symphonic metal band Almora for the translation/rewriting of the Turkish parts of the lyrics.
The video is a lyric video and it was done by Carlos Toro from Abysmo Films that did our video clips the past 13 years.”

In an era where musical genres are meticulously categorized, compartmentalized, and tailored to specific sensibilities, the confluence of alternative rap and gothic darkwave might seem a curious pairing. Yet, Grizz, a Los Angeles-based maverick, is tearing down conventional walls with his eerily captivating track, “Frightening, But Blissful.” Through this bold endeavour, Grizz not only challenges the status quo but also pens a passage in a new chapter that hearkens back to a riveting period in musical lore.

Let’s refresh our memories: from 1979 to 1984, New York City’s musical landscape experienced a seismic upheaval. Birthed from the vibrant Afro-Caribbean quarters of the Bronx, a revolutionary sound named “hip-hop” surfaced, echoing the enduring beats of James Brown and the soulful funk of Sly and the Family Stone. Concurrently, the bohemian souls of the Lower East Side found their anthems in the edgy refrains of British punk and New Wave imports. Both movements, distinct yet intertwined, arose as a raw rebuke to an ossified music industry…much like today, in fact.

The spirited mingling of B-boys and New Wavers at venues like Mudd Club, Danceteria, and the Roxy birthed dynamic innovation. These nascent intersections led to groundbreaking musical fusions, incorporating rap, samples cherry-picked from earlier recordings; and the futuristic strains of the synthesizer. Standing tall among the myriad expressions from this exciting era was Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force’s Planet Rock, co-produced by two white artists, Arthur Baker and John Robie. The latter ingeniously recreated Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express” hook: atop this foundation, Soulsonic Force layered their raps, punctuated by robot-like vocalizations and sweeping orchestral motifs.

The New York Times noted Planet Rock’s influence on “both the black pop mainstream and several leading white new-wave rockers.” but the truth was, hip-hop and New Wave were very much integrated. The artists all fed off each other, armed with exciting new technology and ideas. Once the floodgates opened, everyone else followed suit: Fab 5 Freddy and Jean-Michel Basquiat were collaborating with Blondie; Grandmaster Melle Mel reimagined Liquid Liquid’s avant-garde Cavern as White Lines (which would be covered, in turn, by Duran Duran). Bambaataa would go onto to form Time Zone and would collaborate with Johnny Rotten on a monster hit called World Destruction. Public Enemy even went on tour with The Sisters of Mercy and Gang of Four.

In an age where the audacious spirit of cross-genre exploration has been somewhat overshadowed by the dominance of gangsta rap and the formulaic consistency of Top-40, Grizz’s compositional ethos shines brilliantly. Boldly stepping out of the prescribed boundaries of contemporary darkwave and hip-hop, he melds his distinctive cadence with haunting synthesizers. His tales, steeped in foreboding, dance atop relentless drum machine rhythms that seem to have been plucked from the darkest alcoves of vintage goth haunts. “Frightening, But Blissful” evokes echoes of acts like Male Tears and The Sisters of Mercy, yet it also conjures up the sonic spectres of The Veldt and O. Children, showcasing Grizz’s adeptness at bridging musical worlds.

Der Track kommt mit schnellem und wütendem Heavy-Riffing und einer eingängigen Melodie im Refrain. Der Text wurde von dem Film ‚Tombs of the Blind Dead‘ inspiriert, der auch der Haupteinfluss für das Cover-Artwork war. Wir haben einige Zeit gebraucht, um zu entscheiden, welcher Track der Titel des neuen Albums werden sollte. Wir haben uns schließlich für ‚Embalmed in Decay‘ entschieden, weil er alles enthält, was ein Old School Death Metal-Song haben sollte: Es ist ein geradliniger und knallharter Song, was für mich genau die Qualitäten sind, die der Titelsong eines Albums haben sollte.“

...Only a Suggestion is the debut studio album by the desert rock band Hermano. Featuring the voice of Kyuss, John Garcia, and an all-star line-up that included bassist Dandy Brown, drummer Steve Earle (Afghan Whigs) and guitarists Mike Callahan (Earshot) and David Angstrom (Supafuzz). After passing tapes and CDs amongst each other for six months, the band members entered the studio in early 1999 to begin recording their debut album. The new Ripple Music edition was completely remixed and remastered under the watchful eyes and ears of the band by David Barrik (mixing) and Ty Tabor (mastering).

As Beaty explains: “We spend a lot of time searching, digging for what we want, need or desire in life. Sometimes driving us to a place of anxiety. Sleeping and dreaming gives us a way to escape. The song, Whatever We Find invites the listener to this dream state.”

Tucked away in the foothills of New York’s Adirondacks, Beaty’s musical journey began in 2010 with ‘The Antique Ghost EP,’ featuring Katharine Blake of Miranda Sex Garden/Mediaeval Baebes. Since then, his music chronicles have expanded, weaving in folk, gothic, and indie tones. Each note he strikes, and every lyric he pens, reaches out, offering solace in a tumultuous world.

For this project, Norwegian Audio/Visual savant Sanirams steps in as Creative Director, creating arresting visuals and lending her voice and violin to “In The Blood.” The synergy between Sanirams and Beaty is palpable, evident from their previous collaboration on the 2020 album, “Rust, You Can Leave Me Now.”

But Beaty’s musical realm isn’t confined. “Fool Enough” features the strings of New York’s Alicia Macier VanScoy and the sonic artistry of experimental guitarist Joshua David Santmier from New Orleans. The entire project was nurtured and produced by Beaty and finessed to perfection by Joseph Butera III of Georgia.
