04.11.2023 - Crypthios – Fading Coast (Album – Cryo Chamber)

Genre/Influences: Cinematic, Experimental.
Format: Digital, CD.
Background/Info: One year after the debut-album “Vestigium”, Simeon Popov strikes back with the second opus of his Crypthios project.
Related newsCrypthios – Vestigium (Album – Cryo Chamber)Content: The sound universe of the new work remains driven by an explicit Cinematic sound approach. The work is however evolving into a more Experimental sound approach. The tracks have been built up with impressive, numerous, field recordings. You’ll also notice slow, broken beats getting the work more accessible. The music is moving in between darkness and more evasive parts.
+ + + : The album sounds like an imaginary sonic collage. The project remains atypical to the Cryo Chamber roster although the Cinematic style remains connected to what we’re used to discovering on the Swedish label. The slow rhythm is an interesting aspect of this composition. I also noticed a few poignant cuts like the dreamy, but beautiful last cut “Sunrise” which is a cool apotheosis. Another magic cut is the more Experimental “A Place To Live” which is characterized by multiple sound effects.
– – – : The album is enjoyable but sometimes missing a few extra elements to speak about a true successful work.
Conclusion: Crypthios enlarges Cryo Chamber’s sonic horizon by an album which is definitely apart from the ‘classical’ Cinematic productions.
Best songs: “Sunrise”, “A Place To Live”, “I Saw Them As Their Fins Were Splitting The Sky”.

04.11.2023 - INSOMNIUM: Songs Of The Dusk [EP]
“Songs Of The Dusk” rundet das Story-Konzept “Anno 1696” stimmig ab

04.11.2023 - INSOMNIUM: neue EP “Songs of the Dusk” – Visualizer zu “Stained In Red”

04.11.2023 - PALE – Beyond The Pale

04.11.2023 - Shibalba – Dreams Are Our World Of Experience (Album – Cyclic Law)

Genre/Influences: Ritual, Dark-Ambient, Drone.
Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.
Background/Info: Greek sonic project Shilbalba has been active since 2009 and has released an impressive number of works. The band progressively evolved in style; moving from Metal-inspired creation towards Ritual and Dark-Ambient influences. This new opus has been introduced as ‘a ritual deriving from the darkest corners of the mind, the deathlike spheres of the Netherworld and the truest essence of the Afterlife, to become a homage to the Force of Life Eternal.’. It’s the first release ever released by Cyclic Law.
Related newsShibalba / Dead Man’s Hill / Deathwalk – The Circular Shades Of The Equinox (Album – Zazen Sounds)Content: Shibalba doesn’t really change the sound formula from previous works; we’re visiting a dark sound universe mixing Dark-Ambient atmospheres, Ritual, obscure, elements with Drones and Mystic chants on top. The work has been accomplished by multiple traditional, acoustic, instruments plus hand-crafted instruments empowering the Ritual side of the work.
+ + + : Shilbalba reminds me of the magic of 80s Industrial/Experimental projects -think to Zero Kama, for the use of real instruments and self-made equipment like bones and skulls, percussion instruments, Tibetan Horns, Tibetan Singing Bowls, bone & horn trumpets, Darbuka’s (goblet drums) as well as ceremonial bells and gongs. All together these instruments are injecting authenticity but also this obscure, Ritual, spirit to the work. It resulted in a atmosphere which is hard to catch but definitely awakening dark images and thoughts. The work has been slowly built up reaching an ultimate level of terror at “Teλeth VI” and “Teλeth III”.
– – – : Maybe not the most accessible release but you definitely gone like it if you’re into this kind of sonic experiences.

04.11.2023 - ESA and Moaan Exis drop two-song single ‘Spit & Spite’ – Out now

The two industrial bands ESA and Moaan Exis have united to release a new two-track single, “Spit & Spite”, courtesy of Negative Gain Productions. “Spit & Spite” is a double A-side combining Moaan Exis’ punk-like industrial and basslines with ESA’s percussion.
All started when in 2020, just before the first lockdown of Covid appeared on the horizon, ESA and Moaan Exis played a show together in Prague, Czech Republic. There it was decided that at some point they would collaborate and put something together in the future.
Fast forward three to five years and the schedules finally aligned enough to create something that they all felt deserved to actually live. The artists wanted to make sure that whatever they put together felt like a 50/50 split – like ESA ingested Moaan Exis or Moaan Exis injected ESA.

04.11.2023 - Banned From The Goth Club — New Jersey Hardcore Darkwave Outfit Neon Funeral Return with Their Video for “Avolition”

“We may lurk in the shadows but we all shine”
Emanating from the vibrant gloom of Jersey City, New Jersey, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/neon_funeral">Neon" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" target="_blank">https://www.instagram.com/neon_funeral">Neon Funeral</a> is an ensemble that has finely blended Darkwave and post-punk instrumentals with the ferocity of hardcore screamo/metal vocals, akin to an angst-infused communion between Ian Curtis and Frankie Palmeri of Emmure. The result is a soundscape that resonates with Pornography-era Robert Smith if he were possessed by the demon Pazuzu, with the jangly resonance of Smiths-era Johnny Marr’s guitars. With a history of stirring performances at notable venues like QXT’s in Newark, NJ, St. Vitus in Brooklyn, and Lucky 13 in Brooklyn, they’ve etched a mark in the North East Corridor alternative scene.
Their latest musical endeavor, an EP eloquently titled Banned From the Goth Club, is set to grace the digital shelves of Cleopatra Records on November 8th, aligning Neon Funeral with eminent names like Danzig, Christian Death, Skinny Puppy, and Gary Numan. The EP’s inception can be traced back to a cover song recorded and released for Cleopatra Records in 2021, which then catalyzed the creation of an original song. The conceptual thread of having a more cohesive body of work rather than a string of singles led them back to Timber Studios in Bayonne New Jersey, their creative haven, to craft two more tracks under the aegis of Adam Cichocki of Gatherers, a signee of Equal Vision and No Sleep Records.
The EP’s title track, Avolition, showcases a pulsating, dance-driven melody that is likely to lure listeners to the dance floor. The song encapsulates the essence of Neon Funeral’s ability to interlace dark, atmospheric tunes with an invigorating rhythm.
An artistic visual narrative accompanies “Avolition” as it finds a visual home in a local vintage arcade and bar, a setting that impeccably mirrors Neon Funeral’s aesthetic. With the bar owner’s green light, an entire morning and afternoon were dedicated to capturing the song’s essence on film. The collaborative efforts of videographer Jarrett Allen, editor Ray Morales Jr, gaffer Huttemberg Nassar, and grip/AC by Cole Brui birthed a visual piece that is as enigmatic as the song it represents.
Watch the video for “Avolition” below:
With a narrative that explores varying emotional undertones, Banned From the Goth Club ventures from the upbeat cadence of “Avolition” to the somber yet intense electronic-metal fusion in “High Tech Low Life,” leading to the introspective depths of “A Void” that reflects on nihilism, drug addiction, and societal pressures. The EP is rounded off with an 80s cover of “Party All the Time,” originally by Eddie Murphy and Rick James, bringing with it silky smooth nostalgia laced with a razor-sharp edge.
On the EP’s intriguing title, the band explains:
“The name of the EP “Banned From the Goth Club” was given because of the oxymoron and difficulty of finding our audience given our contradictory sound. The goth audience can’t exactly get fully immersed into the music because of the aggression and intensity of the vocals and the hardcore scene can’t exactly understand the softer and dance-driven instrumentals for moshing. We once performed at a goth venue and seemed out of place and out of touch with the audience. We then coined the phrase Banned From the Goth Club to introduce the sound playfully and almost welcomely.”
The full EP will be unleashed on November 8th, promising a realm of dark, yet danceable tunes for the alternative scene. Meanwhile, delve deeper into Neon Funeral’s sonic world <a href="https://neonfuneral.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">here.</a>

03.11.2023 - Listen to Peruvian Dark Synth Futurists Theremyn 4’s “Art, Noise, + Speed”

The Peruvian electronic music ensemble <a href="https://instagram.com/theremyn4">Theremyn_4</a> has just unveiled their tenth studio album, Art, Noise + Speed. This release marks a pivotal progression in their musical journey, spanning over two decades, where they have successfully melded eclecticism with a steadfast artistic vision.
In the five years since their previous studio album, Lost Moments, Theremyn_4 has sustained an energetic musical output. Their discography has been enriched with the reissue of their inaugural albums, Fluorescente verde en el patio and Mi vida en infrarrojo, each accompanied by an abundance of additional tracks. Their creative portfolio also includes a series of music videos, remixes, and two singles, all serving as precursors to this latest album.
Art, Noise + Speed is further augmented by collaborations with a roster of distinguished artists. Among them are Paul “Bee” Hampshire, the renowned vocalist from Getting The Fear; Nicolas Miranda and Lu Falen, both valued contributors and current members of the live lineup; Joao Villacorta, lending his expertise in post-production and recordings; and Joni Chiappe, an illustrious Peruvian musician who tragically passed in late March.
In the creation of their latest album, Theremyn_4 has elegantly woven in influences from seminal new wave and progressive music luminaries, including Peter Gabriel, Japan, Getting the Fear, Gang of Four, The Fixx, and King Crimson. Drawing from these iconic touchstones and more, the band has crafted an auditory experience distinct from their earlier compositions.
Art, Noise + Speed delves into a rich palette of themes, nodding notably to avant-garde art movements of the early 20th century – particularly Italian Futurism and German Expressionism. Beyond the confines of visual art, the realms of cinema, literature, and architecture have also lent their essence, enriching the band’s creative canvas.
“I started working this album in 2020 and I have been shaping the tracks and the concept of the album influenced in part by “new” music (so in quotes) because there is so much material online that you can discover new worlds in the 70s or 80s,” muses Jose Gallo. “This album has also been influenced by the “band” format we have been doing live shows for the last few years. For example in songs like Neon Sun/Neon Man or Nazca Slow Cowboy. Reading about art, music and history has been an endless source of inspiration for me for quite some time now.”
The record commences with Nazca Cowboy, a kaleidoscopic number reminiscent of Madchester vibes — notably echoing the likes of Happy Mondays, but with a nod to the electro-centric Super Furry Animals. The esteemed Paul Bee Hampshire graces the track with his presence. As the album progresses, Notre Dame, Pt I emerges, drawing parallels with the synth motifs reminiscent of The Units’ High Pressure Days. When combined with Krautrock influences and a touch of spoken word, it crafts a compelling auditory narrative. Next comes two synth instrumentals: Street Girl Ethos and Air Giants, both poetically weaving Hertz tones into gorgeous tapestries of sound.
Art Stealers showcases the vocals of Lu Falen, whose timbre evokes reminiscences of Trent Reznor. Anchored in an 80s synthpop rhythm, the track offers a modern flair, while its rhythmic repetition invites both dance and recognition. Gallo draws inspiration from the drama of the theatre, the pulsing energy of New York City, and the nuanced realm of artistic appropriation via sampling.
After the initial tracks, the record flows into another instrumental piece, Dry Season, which offers a fusion of funk with an atmospheric, almost celestial, ambiance. Then Neon Sun/Neon Man takes center stage, exuding an immediacy in its tempo that crescendos into a rousing chorus, as if beckoning the listener into its narrative embrace. Subsequently, Notre Dame Pt II emerges, offering a contrasting vibe. This piece resonates with a more laid-back, serene aura, providing a gentle decrescendo from the album’s preceding energy and guiding the listener through a soothing interlude. To round off this musical odyssey, the album gracefully circles back with Nazca Slow Cowboy, a collaborative piece that serves as a fitting conclusion. This track sees the return of Paul “Bee” Hampshire and also features the poignant contributions of the late Joni Chiappe, ensuring a resonant closure to the album’s intricate tapestry of sounds.

03.11.2023 - MANTUS: In tune with the times

Melancholic cemetery sounds? Wrong! Anyone who still remembers Mantus as a melancholy, darkly dreamy band hasn’t been paying attention in recent years. With “Verstärker”, the duo makes it clear once and for all that the sound can be heavy and dark, but at the same time rocking and hard, and that the topics can also […]

03.11.2023 - BLOODRED HOURGLASS: How’s The Heart?
How’s The Heart?“ darstellt.
„In Lieu Of Flowers“ und „The End We Start From“ haben ähnlichen Ohrwurmcharakter wie das treibende „The Sun Still In Me“, wo die eigentlichen Stärken der Formation wenigstens teilweise zum Tragen kommen.
„How’s The Heart?“ wollten BLOODRED HOURGLASS schließlich wissen.

03.11.2023 - Listen to Los Angeles Dark Post-Punk Outfit Deceits’ New Album “If There’s No Heaven”

If there’s no heaven… I’ll make it exist.
Ah, those Los Angeles purveyors of post-punk perfidy, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/deceits_band/?hl=en">Deceits</a>" rel="noopener nofollow noreferrer" target="_blank">https://www.instagram.com/deceits_band/?hl=en">Deceits</a>, have deigned to dance once more into the fray, parading their latest opus with a flourish: If There’s No Heaven… With a title that winks at eternity, this collection of tunes is a veritable seesaw of sentiment, a curious cavort between the depths of despondency and the buoyant bubbles of hope. They’ve plucked the name of this melodious mélange from a line, oh so poignant, that emerges in the twilight of the album—a tale of paramours, those star-cross’d perhaps, entwining their fates with whispers stout enough to thumb their noses at the void’s gaping maw. Their tender troth seems to be but a delicate defiance to the Great Big Void. Love in the shadow of nothingness — what could be more divine?
Within its breadth, the album traverses a spectrum of musical expressions, each segment a reflection of the varied sentiments encountered during its creation. Deceits deftly honor the canon of classic post-punk — The Cure, Sad Lovers & Giants, The Chameleons, The Danse Society — while their repertoire unflinchingly incorporates elements across genres, embracing the angularity of new wave, the dark contours of deathrock, and even the impassioned cries of ’90s emo/screamo. It’s a bold synthesis of influences that speaks both to the band’s versatility and to their reverence for the form.
The opening track, Failures, is a highly energetic song with a guitar riff inspired by Promised Land by Skeletal Family and Primary by The Cure.
“Failures was one of the first songs we ever wrote, we decided to properly re-record it since we felt it had much more potential to reach the sound we envisioned for it when we first wrote it,” says Moreno. The chorus line of “the bliss of failure” is about trying to find peace in owning up to major life mistakes.
Drowning In An Empty Sea is a love letter to early Cure: it pays homage to A Forest.
“The song was created in roughly one day which was a first for us since it’s usually a chaotic and long process,” Moreno recalls. “The song’s lyrics came to me suddenly in a daydream I had in which I imagined a beautiful dark blue ocean, and because of my fear of oceans, I felt like I was choking without even having to touch the water which I subconsciously knew was a metaphor for the sensation of going through anxiety.”
In the veiled language of night, a solitary soul yearns for a reunion steeped in the eternal and the visceral in the lyrics for the next song; Mi Amor, Mi Vampira. This poetic lament blends devotion with a gothic romance, where love’s sacrifice verges on the vampiric, yearning for an amor de sangre—a love as deep and enduring as the blood that sustains life itself.
This sentiment is followed by A Burial of Dreams: a haunting confession emerges in the twilight of introspection—a plea for quietus among the cacophony of regrets. The seeker of solace confronts their history, longing for erasure, for the peace of mind that eludes them. Amidst the refrains of could-haves and should-haves, there lies a stark yearning for the solace found in the oblivion of closed eyes. This elegy to the self, rife with the torment of unspoken words and unhealed wounds, is a testament to the weight of memory and the elusive nature of healing.
Every Promise is a candid narrative entwining affection and regret, confronting the solitary aftermath of personal failings. Brooding guitar and an undercurrent of bass and evocative guitar riffs carry a distinct fervour with Moreno’s passionate vocals. Lingering on unsaid words and past regrets, the lyrics evoke a remorseful reflection on lost opportunities and unfulfilled commitments. A chorus of apologies underscores a narrative of love and disappointment, where roses symbolize intentions never fully realized and promises remain hauntingly unkept.
To Just Fade Away commences with guitar notes that are ethereal whispers harkening to the Cocteau Twins, before surging into a breakneck tempo. In a seamless genre shift, Serenity (Blows The Wind) sweeps us into the realm of Britpop, yet it is imbued with the airy essence of dream pop laced with a discernible post-punk edge, evoking a soundscape that is both nostalgic and novel.
As the album draws to a close, we are met with If There’s No Heaven…, a track that resides in the deepest echelons of introspection. With its resemblance to The Cure at their most contemplative, it’s a track that doesn’t just simmer with existential musings—it demands an active engagement, an audit of the soul. Here lies the quintessence of the album: it is as much a collection of songs as it is a dialogue with the self, a meditation on the ethereal and the eternal.
Listen below and order the album <a href="https://deceitsband.bandcamp.com/album/if-theres-no-heaven?from=embed">here</a>:
<a href="https://deceitsband.bandcamp.com/album/if-theres-no-heaven">If There’s No Heaven… by DECEITS</a>
In the waning months of 2021, a band known as Deceits came into existence through the camaraderie of Kevin Moreno, contributing his vocal stylings as well as handling the bass and synthesizer; Kevin Hernandez, who takes up the mantle of the guitarist alongside his synthesizer responsibilities; and Francisco Saenz, who underpins the trio with his percussion. This collective draws a deep well of inspiration from The Cure, with a nod as well to the likes of Asylum Party and Human Tetris.
The ensemble crafts a sound that is at once reflective and rhythmically compelling, a nod to the brooding introspection of the 1980s post-punk scene. Yet, Deceits does not merely replicate; they infuse their work with contemporary darkwave sensibilities and an undercurrent of hardcore punk’s immediacy and spirit. This fusion creates a poignant backdrop that invites both reflection and movement, an homage that speaks as much to the present as it does to its storied influences.

03.11.2023 - London experimental electronic trio Decommissioned Forests release third album ‘Chemistry’ – Out now

Released today, 3 November 2023, is the new album “Chemistry” from Decommissioned Forests. The album is available now from Bandcamp, Spotify, and all major streaming platforms. This is the third full-length album for the London-based experimental electronic trio and follows their dank atmospheric debut, “Forestry” (2019), and the post-industrial modernist sophomore album, “Industry” (2022).
Musically the trio (Howard Gardner, Daniel Vincent, and Max Rael) have been taking a broad range of influences by outsider artists such as Coil, Current 93, Cluster, Nine Inch Nails, Nurse With Wound and Throbbing Gristle to merge it into their own sound.
As the “Chemistry” album’s 10 tracks took shape, it became clear that the collection of songs had started to take a conceptual form. Daniel explains: “We started to plot the curve of the album musically as we recorded Max’s vocals, so the album loosely follows a day in the life, as day dreams, existential angst, and some kind of trauma surface.”
Related newsLondon trio Decommissioned Forests share sci-fi-inspired video 'Black River Falls'Max expands: “In terms of lyrical themes for the album, we start with Goodbye to the Cloud People which for me, is at least in part, about coming off antidepressants, leaving a world where nothing feels quite real, a not unpleasant dreamlike numbness, so the narrator of the album is taking a look at the world around him and in many ways, seeing it for the first time. Medication then plays into the wider them of chemistry which is explored further in the title track, and All is Vanity. Eel Tank and Bread to the Ducks describe alien attempts to capture something of the human condition, but there’s always something inherently lost in translation. Eel Tank reflects the existential horror of being trapped in unfulfilling meaningless work, whereas Bread to the Ducks tries to capture something of scarcity economics, capitalism and the factory farming of animals. I’m the kind of person who has a drawer full of old notepads going back over the years so I tend to bring a mixture of fresh new ideas and improvisation, as well as old words and ideas that I still like and that still resonate with me now. Lyrically, Black River Falls is pretty untouched from 2002, and The Dust is a rewritten version of a song that goes right back to the very first band I was in as a teenager at school. I guess some of us never really fully grow out of that teenage angst. ‘We were always easy prey’. We were then, as we are now.”
The Howard Gardner video for the album’s lead-single ‘Black River Falls’, which premiered on Side-Line.com in September, continues the narrative from “A Comforting Uncertainty” video from the band’s previous album.
