Background/Info: I might easily affirm Xotox is the main project from Andreas Davids. The German artist rapidly gained recognition with his Industrial music since 1998. He released an impressive number of albums -featuring collaborative releases, and now strikes back with his first new opus in three years. You’ll also hear 2 remixes right at the end of the album.

Most of the tracks remain driven by Industrial-Electronics but you’ll also notice dancefloor driven Industrial-Techno pieces, EBM elements and even a kind of Industrial New-Beat cut. The work also features more elaborated cuts driven by cold sound sequences. You’ll notice numerous German- but also English samplings.

+ + + : Xotox is no longer dealing with the harsher, brutal, and unpolished side of Industrial music. Andreas Davids feels comfortable mixing different influences to his Industrial ‘ogre’ project. I like when he’s adding EBM bass lines mixed with surprising, heavy, drum sections(especially at the debut of the album) but I’m still into his ‘classic’ sound. The best cuts are however at the second part of the album. He’s experimenting with Industrial-Techno and minimal sound treatments. One of the most surprising cuts is a remix of “Robotorkrieg” by Sven Phalanx (who’s also releasing work together with Andreas Davids).

– – – : I can imagine the early die-hard fans of Xotox will maybe be less pleased by the evolution of the project touching ground with Industrial-Techno and EBM.

It’s not all about ‘innovation’ rather than a mix of the different influences ES23 has experienced over the years. The debut part stands for solid Dark-Electro power featuring orchestral elements and melody lines. Quite progressively the work moves into danceable Electro/Body-Pop music with robotic vocals on top. These songs are driven by solid bass lines and carrying choruses while holding on a powerful exposure. I like both sides of the work although I have a preference for the ’Pop’ side revealing an artist in constant progress.

– – – : The album’s diversity, and especially the mix of styles, is not fully cohesive although I’m not shocked about it.

In the labyrinthine streets of Milan, a new sound has been emanating, an enigmatic alchemy concocted by the experimental quartet known as <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lasael11/">Lasael</a>. Formed in the somber aether of 2021, this ensemble brings together a fusion of talents: the formidable vocals and lyricism of Jesse Perret, the guitar mastery of Stefano Lattanzio, the dual command of drums and synths by Luca Brunelli, and the later addition of Andrea Palmas on bass.

LASAEL isn’t just about the emotional response from the music; their artistry involves a full-sensory experience. They’re painting a complex picture with their sounds and sights, blending disorienting online videos and ritualistic storytelling into a spectral visual feast that screams twenty-first-century aesthetic. Their influences are a diverse mix, echoing the likes of Swans, The Birthday Party, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, and even a sprinkle of Lou Reed’s genius.

Their latest track, “Normal Bunny,” introduces a touch of Angelo Badalamenti to their sonic repertoire, infusing a bluesy refrain that sporadically reveals a Pandora’s box of inner turmoil. It momentarily soothes the listener before jolting them with its powerful emotional outbursts. The accompanying video, a nightmarish visual creation filmed and directed by LASAEL and Nicholas Celano, comprises a series of vignettes punctuated by a strobe effect (a precautionary note for those with epilepsy).

“Normal Bunny is a song that might sound like a sort of cinematic ballad, which differs from the other tracks of Foghorn in terms of composing structure,” says the band. “At the same time it display a whole soundscape including all the different approaches we are presenting on the EP, from the noisy tunes to the slow and phantasmagoric moments.”

The heart of the song pulsates with the idea of discovering one’s own unique brand of magic precisely when life’s challenges appear insurmountable. “I wanted to give the music for Hechizos a Mexican synth pop feel to it,” adds Ramirez. “Writing the dancey bass line and beat. Then adding a  flavorful lead melody and layers of synths for the sound that I wanted to achieve. Once all together it gave it a complete sound. The music and vocals fit perfectly.”

Ein Jüngling, ein Freund, eine bedrohliche Festung, deren unmenschliche Bewohner an die Prozession auf dem Cover von DARK FUNERALs “Secrets of the Black Arts” erinnern. ULRIKE SEROWYs Erzählung “Die Festung” ist so ganz anders als “Wölfe vor der Stadt” und zeigt, dass die Autorin aus Köln ihr Faible für die Unheimlichkeit auch gänzlich ins Medium Märchen transportieren kann. Ein herkömmliches Buch ist “Die Festung” indes nicht, vielmehr eine Art Auftragsarbeit. Unter dem Titel “Black Banners” fand sich die Erzählung als Lyrikinspiration für das BELTEZ-Album “A Grey Chill and a Whisper”. 

Als wäre Ritter Kato wieder an der Macht
Die knapp 54 Seiten der “Festung” lesen sich rasch, denn man lebt sich sogleich in die karge Welt SEROWYs ein. Die Bedrohung, die Angst, als nächstes einen Sohn an die Festung zu verlieren, die Auswegslosigkeit. “Die Festung” ist kein leichtes Märchen und definitiv ein starkes Argument dafür, was Märchen eigentlich schon immer waren: eine Textsorte für Erwachsene. Und doch ziehen Erinnerungen auf an einen der furchterregendsten Bösewichte der Kinderliteratur: Ritter Kato. Fast wartet man darauf, dass der herzlose Böse aus Astrid Lindgrens “Mio, mein Mio” am Ende der eigentliche Herrscher der “Festung” ist (er ist es nicht, soviel sei verraten). Und wie in “Mio, mein Mio” zeigt SEROWY, dass das stärkste Band zwischen den Menschen die Freundschaft ist. Vielleicht ein Hoffnungsschimmer in unserer von Einsamkeit, Flüchtigkeit und Krieg geprägten Welt. Ein kleines, aber starkes Buch. Kaufpflicht!

Denn „Dark Christmas“ ist nicht der erste Weihnachts-Tribut der ehemaligen NIGHTWISH-Sängerin und selbst einige ihrer regulären Alben hatten Bezug auf die kalte Jahreszeit. „Dark Christmas“ stellt jetzt ewige (meist amerikanische) Fest-Klassiker wie u.a. „Jingle Bells“, „White Chistmas“, „Frosty The Snowman“ oder „Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer“, den Cover-Versionen der Weihnachts-Pop-Hits von WHAM!, Mariah Carey und Paul McCartney gegenüber. Zusammen mit großen Orchester + Kinderchor und ihrer klassisch geschulten Stimme generiert Tarja einen beeindrucken düster-cineastischen Breitwand-Score, der gleichfalls Hollywood, die Symphonic Metal- und Gothic-Fans bedienen dürfte. Mir persönlich ist das Ganze allerdings zu schwermütig getragen und viel zu viel Oper, Lametta & „Tralala“. Ich hätte da lieber etwas mehr Pepp und Spritzigkeit erwartet, wie damals bei den ähnlich gelagerten Alben von Elvis oder Billy Idol. Da ich aber eh nicht die Zielgruppe dafür bin, wird diese mit „Dark Christmas“ auf jeden Fall bedient und somit kann Weihnachten kommen! (Marco Fiebag)

LORD DYING bringen Anfang 2024 ein neues Album raus:  “Clandestine Transcendence”, so der Titel, erscheint am 19. Januar 2024 über MNRK Heavy.

Nun kann man sich auch ein Video zu “The Endless Road Home” bei YouTube ansehen, es ist der zweite Song, den LORD DYING vom neuen Album vorstellen.

Mit einem Video zu “I Am Nothing I Am Everything” hatte die Sludge/Death Metal-Band aus Portland Anfang Oktober den ersten der neuen Songs im Netz geteilt.

Erik Olson (Gitarre, Gesang) und Chris Evans (Gitarre) haben für “Clandestine Transcendence” mit Alyssa Mocere (ehemalige Bassistin von EIGHT BELLS) und Kevin Swartz (aktueller Schlagzeuger von Tithe) zusammengearbeitet.  Produziert hat die Platte Kurt Ballou im God City Studio.

COEVAL’s self-titled debut album contains nine tracks that showcase a moody and forceful musicality, transitioning between intense moments, slow and steady rhythms, labored breathing, and experimental sounds. The compositions shift between moments of martial strength and gentle vulnerability, reflecting the band’s collective experiences in a vivid portrayal of their lives.

It’s worth noting that all tracks were captured live, with the group playing as a cohesive unit, much like they would on stage. This communal energy flows throughout the entire album, with each member drawing inspiration from one another, creating a sense of camaraderie that shines through in the music.

The LP was recorded in one week in winter 2021, with Paulie Jan on production.

Coeval’s debut will be released via Le Turc Mécanique on the 1st of December 2023. The band will be playing live at The Shacklewell Arms in London on 8th December, to celebrate the launch of their debut.

In the fervent underbelly of Hungary’s industrial music scene, there’s an ethos of self-transformation that’s almost surgical in its precision. The artists within this realm are not averse to introspection, often recalibrating their approach to blur and transcend genre confines, or to engage in a dialectic of deconstruction and creation within their sonic environment.

This latest offering,<a href="https://new-horizon.bandcamp.com/album/new-horizon-a-hungarian-electro-industrial-compilation?from=embed"> New Horizion: A Hungarian Electro-Industrial Compilation</a>, comprises seventeen tracks that are emblematic of the genre’s robust and unyielding nature. The music delivers with an industrial precision, each track shaped with a more refined finish, yielding an auditory experience that is stark and unrelenting—setting a new benchmark for the country’s vibrant but often distorted cultural legacy.

The lyrics to Planetdamage’s EXOCOMM depict a futuristic scenario where advanced technology intertwines with human experience, symbolized by “EXOCOMM.” Born from a statistically improbable marriage of Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles and a long discussion with an AI about the most probable characteristics of both extraterrestrial and AI languages, this song is about what happens when a language not of this Earth gains sentience and moves hosts through cities to infest more minds. A pervasive “virus” spreads through language, altering perception and reality. This virus, a metaphor for influential ideas or tech, is part of the narrator’s design, suggesting intentional dissemination. Communication evolves beyond current understanding, driven by “somatic” and “neural engineers,” hinting at a blend of the organic and the artificial. The song is delivered via spooky robotic-sounding vocoder, making its message all the more alarming.

“Would have said cyberpunk earlier, but we’ve been living it for a time now, so let’s just stick with “disgruntled electro- industrial about the unevenly distributed future…now with 25% more psytrance and breakbeat, quip <a href="https://www.planetdamage.com/music">Planetdamage</a>.

In the realm of industrial rhythm, Stahlgeist marks its territory with the kind of beat that propels bodies into motion, reminiscent of the pulse found in classic tracks from pioneers like Skinny Puppy and Nitzer Ebb. Crafted by István Gazdag and Tamás Bank, veterans of the EBM scene, the project is a distillation of a thirty-year friendship steeped in the genre’s austere traditions. The duo, drawing inspiration from a theatrical piece by Simon Stockhausen, invokes with their music a collective potency—a celebration of the industrial narrative: the sinew and the labor, the nocturnal toil, and the catharsis found in the collective dance. This is not just sound but a physical manifesto, a rally to the rhythm of industry itself.

Reinfection’s Collapse offers an instrumental homage to the titans of industrial sound, integrating the spectral distortion and complex percussion that evokes the genre’s golden age. With a nod to the likes of Fad Gadget and Skinny Puppy, the album interlaces the ethereal with the otherworldly through its synth work. Samples from news broadcasts lend a disquieting realism, creating a soundscape that is both cryptic and disconcerting.

“This song was inspired by the economic, social, and war events taking place in the world,” the band explains. “We are moving closer and
closer towards some kind of moral collapse, with a burning match next to the fuse.”

The lyrics to Japanese Phoenix by Tenno Pop explore a tension between a longing for freedom and a sense of entrapment within a ‘monstrous fantasy.’ The juxtaposition of vivid spring imagery with the desire to remember and generate love suggests a struggle between hope and reality. The repeated questioning of life and freedom underlines a yearning for liberation.

Kristof Selmeci and Balazs Bence established Tenno Pop in 2010 as a genre-defying collective, deeply entrenched in the underground music scene. Their explorations delve into the origins, collective consciousness, and the very essence of what constitutes the universal language of music.

“We started working on the track back in 2011, inspired by the events in Fukushima,” says the band. “The concept was to try to organically mix various traditional Japanese instruments with modern electronics and an industrial sound. All of this was enhanced with special sound effects from Noh and Kabuki theater, and we added a couple of sacred festival and ceremonial song motifs. The texts are recorded by Bence and Basho Matsuo (1644-1694).”

“Neither the ‘present’ nor the passage of time can be defined as a property. These can only be expressed by the meaning of words. Only the meaning can be used to refer to the volatility of the present and the inexorable passage of time,” says GRIP about their frenetic EBM single Számolj!. “However, it can be defined as a relation. Existence is the question. Existence is at stake in this case as well. An earlier event can affect a later one. In other words, only one domain of the past can affect one domain of the future. But if this is so, then both the past and the future exists, since if there is something in the past that affects, and there is something in the future that is being affected, then both the past and the future exists. This is the very thing we have to experience in our everyday lives.”

Zsolt Gyarmathy (CyberBob) and vocalist Simon Tibor, who hail from the Viharsarok region, are versatile veteran musicians often teaming up, such as in the synthpop band Syntax Error and now in the post-punk revival band kékmandarin.

Invoking the disquieting spirit of industrial forebears like Skinny Puppy, the track Forint by Empelde x Planetdamage sets to music the harsh realities of schoolyard bullying, allegorically mapping this to the tribulations of Hungary’s currency. In this narrative, the forint becomes a beleaguered character, beleaguered by external pressures and internal failings, ensnared in an economic maelstrom of speculation and devaluation. The song emerges against a backdrop of opaque financial machinations and the mercurial nature of media narratives surrounding fiscal policy, inflation, and fluctuating exchange rates. The tone of the track captures a collective frustration and sympathy, recognizing the pervasive impact of the forint’s volatility on the everyday lives of citizens, not just those with wanderlust.

Next, 3.N.D. comes through with the powerful, blistering Victims of Ourselves, which angrily rails against greed at the expense of quality of life. Channeling Front Line Assembly and Fad Gadget, this critique is best blared at full volume during the hangry hour of your work day.

“The song focuses on the city, moving to its inhabitants to take you where you don’t want to be: wallowing in the swamp of loneliness, greed,
indifference and hatred, from which there is no way out, because there are no conclusions, let alone self-reflection, only the unpleasant but at least familiar embrace of the familiar overall crap,” says the band.  “We tried to collect in 4×4 rows why we are the victims of courselves who expect someone’s gonna solve our problems, their problems, for ourselves. Which evidently gave way to the second chorus twisted into a question: “will the problems be solved by someone else?”

There are minimal lyrics in the following EBM track from MAN+MACHINE, Kill Me Though, but they pack an emotional wallop.

“I wanted to evoke a moment like a bitter, yet hopeful morning when I find myself at a factory site on the outskirts of the city,” says the artist. “And in the background of this moment, not only as music, but also as an aesthetic, the industrial techno sound is intertwined with EBM elements and some bluesy things, which I hope together create the atmosphere that I wanted to bring to this song.”

There is a strong anti-war sentiment coming through in Worker’s Ordits!. Disgust for suffering transcends language, as the clanging military beat emulates marching soldiers. The inspiration came from the 1976 film Network, as Howard Beale ranted on-air “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” It’s a song about finding the strength to take initiative to make change, and to encourage others to follow suit.

The next track takes a strong detour to the seedy world of sexual domination in Celina’s steamy Hurt You More. In this track, a commanding female presence takes center stage, her allure framed by the clandestine and the forbidden. Behind closed doors, she embodies the seductive force that draws you in. The sounds are rich with deep bass and raw electronic strokes, encapsulating the essence of temptation turned to sin. There’s an invigorating beat that compels movement, inviting the listener on a transgressive journey. Here, the listener submits to a guiding mistress, who navigates a landscape of pleasure and discomfort with a deft hand. Celina, known in the circuits as Cyberqueen, encapsulates what the pulse of electronic punk aspires to be. Her toolkit—a synthesis of raw synthesizers and the grandeur of science fiction—transforms her tracks into odysseys, inviting listeners to embark on aural voyages that stretch beyond the customary frontiers of music.

Returning to the firm ground of industrial rhythm, RTFXX’s Wretched Sorry State serves as a sonic rally against authoritarianism. This offshoot of Planetdamage brandishes a lexicon of rebellion, crafting an indelible narrative of defiance. The urgency of escape and the shadow of surveillance are at the fore, echoing a modern cyberpunk sensibility. The track’s pulse is a digital heartbeat, its inspiration drawn from the omnipresence of artificial intelligence in our lives.

A kérdés by CMC narrates the solemn journey of a Wanderer who understands the fate of a dying city. As he stands on a mountain, he observes the remnants of humanity fading in a radioactive wasteland. The final chorus shatters against the rocks as silence screams, and the world ends not with a bang, but with a whimper under the quiet storm clouds of judgement. Formed by György Szász, Vince Kósa and the late Zoltán Szántó,
CMC (Cro-Magnon’s Coke) is a legendary industrial band of the 80’s, revived in 2019 with new members Csaba Gáspár and Barnabás Horváth.

In its latest incarnation, Vacuum(x), István Gazdag’s solo venture, remains true to the incendiary essence that marked its inception alongside István Drimál. This embodiment revives the stark, unyielding ethos of early electronic body music, channeling the raw, unapologetic spirit of the ’80s…and George Orwell.

“The masses never revolt of their own accord, and they never revolt merely because they are oppressed. Indeed, so long as they are not permitted to have standards of comparison, they never even become aware that they are oppressed.” (George Orwell)

Lázadj! (EBM verzió) serves as a clarion call to those hemmed in by unseen shackles, urging a defiant uprising. Through the metaphor of a beleaguered butterfly, it summons a collective awakening to the imperative of liberation, championing the fight for autonomy and the dire need to reclaim one’s place in the world before the window of opportunity slams shut.

TieF Lärm, the nom de guerre of Tibor Feldmann, operates as a one-man electronic bastion, blending EBM with industrial flare. His track “Portrészobor” presents a stark tableau of creation—bass lines both peculiar and abrasive lay the groundwork for dark melodic constructions. It’s a narrative of endurance, of becoming a spectacle frozen in strain, a faceless visage sculpted from clay, defined by raw and purposeful etchings. This process, a meditative unfolding on the workbench, suggests a bust emerging amidst contemporary terror. A face takes shape—less a face than a grimace—hands working, smearing what might be taken for charm into the clay, only for the finished work to be imprisoned behind glass, its tension forever caught in stasis.

LivingTotem is next with their pounding instrumental number, Clear Dynamics. “This was previously unreleased song that I took and geometrically reworked live to give you another gloriously faster and shorter version,” says the artist. “A post-apocalyptic raging ecstasy with a cleansing force.” LivingTotem presents an improvisational foray into the realm of music, one that disregards the usual formalities and linguistic limits. It is an exploration—a chiaroscuro blend of primal cadences and the relentless pulse of industrial vibrations.

Following this is CALM T’s expansive anti-industrial anthem, In Symbiosis With Evil. The song reflects the struggle of living in a toxic environment, both literal and metaphorical, where industrial decay and societal corruption are suffocating. It speaks to the resignation and resilience required to endure in a world that is indifferent to suffering, where survival means coexisting with the very elements that oppress and attempt to crush the spirit.

“We know at times that we could do more but we have to live in symbiosis with evil, as sometimes that little must be done to take us forward and maybe strengthen us, because this is just how the world is,” the band concludes.

Last…but certainly not least, is the minimalist instrumental composition evoking Fad Gadget once again, the brain-busting, robotic DATA1 by ARAS FOCUM. The band describes the sound as “Always against the flow, capturing and layering energy without the intention of owning the vibrations. Sound sensation of vibrations spreading as mechanical waves.”

In a reaction Stephane K Vandezande says: “I’ve always loved this PNE piece, and it was inevitable that one day or another I’d do a cover of this EBM classic and its instantly recognisable synth riff.”

„In Utero“ war 1993 das dritte Album von NIRVANA und ist bis heute ein Zeugnis von Überforderung, Inkonsequenz, Scheitern und letztendlich das eines Triumphes (des Todes)! Die damals populärste Band der Grunge-Bewegung war auf den unerwarteten weltweiten Erfolg von „Nevermind“ nicht vorbereitet und kam mit den diversen Nebeneffekten des Erfolges nicht klar. Der extreme Drogenkonsum von Frontmann Kurt Cobain und Leitbild einer ganzen Generation machte das Ganze nicht einfacher und man wollte irgendwie wieder zurück zu den Anfängen als Band. Das neue Album war daher unter dem Titel „I Hate Myself And I Want To Die“ geplant und als Produzent sollte Steve Albini (BIG BLACK, RAPEMAN, SHELLAC) fungieren. Dieser war und ist für seine direkten Analog-Aufnahmen bekannt und NIRVANA erhofften sich durch diese Kombination einen wieder etwas schrofferen Sound. Im Gegensatz zu wohl fast allen anderen potentiellen Kandidaten riss sich Steve Albini nicht um diesen Job, stellte Bedingungen und bekam trotzdem den Zuschlag. Geffen Records war davon überhaupt nicht begeistert, betitelte das Ergebnis als „Scheiße“ und saß damit letztendlich am längeren Hebel. Die Band knickte ein und das Album wurde von Scott Litt zum Teil neu gemixt, editiert und zensiert, obwohl sich das Steve Albini vertraglich verboten hatte. Das sorgte natürlich für richtig Ärger, der Meister war sauer, zumal er dahingehend hingewiesen hatte und deshalb auf dem fertigen Album unter dem neuen Titel „In Utero“ nur ein „Recorded By Steve Albini“ stand. Die Bedenken des amerikanischen Major-Labels waren jedoch unbegründet, denn die Single „Heart-Shaped Box“ wurde (auch Dank MTV) ein Hit und das Album ging in mehreren Ländern auf Nummer 1. Durch den Selbstmord von Kurt Cobain wenige Monate später im April 1994 wurde dann das Album (wie die ganze Diskografie) sowieso zum ewigen Selbstläufer. Zum 20. Jahrestag von „In Utero“ hatte sogar Steve Albini seinen Frieden damit gemacht, denn zu diesem Anlass erschien erstmals der Original-Mix des Meister im Rahmen der 20th Anniversary Deluxe-Box. Inzwischen sind nun schon wieder 10 Jahre vergangen und eine neue Würdigung des letzten Album von NIRVANA steht in den verschiedenen Formaten an. Diesmal beschränkt man sich beim Haupt-Album wieder auf den bekannten gefälligeren Mix von 1993, welcher jetzt durch Bob Weston von den Analog-Tapes neu remastert wurde und richtig interessant wird es dann bei den Zugaben. So bietet die Doppel-CD-Variante 14 bisher unveröffentlichte Live-Tracks von der „In Utero“-Tour und die 5CD-Deluxe-Box neben 5 B-Seiten & Raritäten ganze 53 Live-Tracks bzw. zwei komplette Konzert-Mitschnitte + Bonus-Aufnahmen! Natürlich gibt es die Super-Deluxe-Box auch im Vinyl-Format und diese erstreckt sich dabei auf 8 LPs. Mir liegt zum Review allerdings nur die einfache LP-Ausgabe vor, welche trotzdem absolut nicht zu verachten ist. Zuerst wäre da mal das überaus stabile Klappcover, die gefütterte Innenhülle und sehr gute Pressung der 180g-Platte lobend zu erwähnen. Des weiteren enthält diese ein Beiblatt und eine 10“ mit den 5 B-Seiten & Raritäten. Diese sind im einzelnen der CD-Hidden Ghost-Track „Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip“ von „In Utero“, die beiden Single-B-Seiten „Marigold“ und „Moist Vagina“ (damals nur unter der Abkürzung „MV“ veröffentlicht) und die Compilation-Beiträge „Sappy“ („No Alternative“) bzw. „I Hate Myself And I Want To Die“ („The Beavis And Butt-Head Experience“). Diese laut Sticker limitierte Version ist wirklich eine sehr schicke, lohnende wie ausreichende Erweiterung dieses Album-Klassikers und die anderen Deluxe-Ausgaben wohl eher was für die Hardcore-Fans und Sammler. Ich selbst habe inzwischen auch mit NIRVANA meinen Frieden gemacht und kann der düster-rauen Atmosphäre von „In Utero“ etwas abgewinnen. Dem war nicht immer so, denn Anfang der 90er ging der Grunge-Hype völlig an mir vorbei und ich eh in völlig anderen musikalischen Gefilden unterwegs. Allerdings erkannte ich schnell das Potential der Band, denn wir hatten damals bei unserer „The Axeman’s Jazz“-Disko recht zeitig das „Nevermind“-Album (mein Kollege war Sub Pop-Fan) und als wir das erste Mal „Smells Like Teen Spirit“ spielten, tanze zwar keiner, aber mussten es danach an diesem Abend noch 2 x auflegen! Fand ich damals Scheiße, inzwischen jedoch ganz amüsant und Zeiten ändern sich halt, weshalb jetzt eben auch „In Utero“ 30 Jahre später Einzug in meine Sammlung hält. (Marco Fiebag)

XANDRIA haben mit “Your Stories I’ll Remember” einen neuen Clip bei YouTube online gestellt. Entnommen ist das Stück dem aktuellen Album “The Wonders Still Awaiting“.

Auch zu “My Curse Is My Redemption” steht ein Lyric-Video bereit. Zuvor gab es Ende Januar zur Single “Two Worlds” noch ein Musikvideo und im Dezember 2022 mit “The Wonders Still Awaiting” einen Clip zum Titelstück.

Erst Anfang November hatte man mit “Ghosts” ein weiteres Musikvideo online gestellt. Das Stück stammt ebenfalls vom neuen Album “The Wonders Still Awaiting”, das am 3. Februar 2023 via Napalm Records in diversen Formaten erschienen ist:

Zuvor hatte man pünktlich zum Tourauftakt im Herbst eine neue Single geteilt: “You Will Never Be Our God” gibt’s als Musikvideo bei YouTube, außerdem ist Sänger Ralf Scheepers (PRIMAL FEAR) als Gast mit dabei.

Erst im Mai stellte die Gruppe ihre neue Besetzung mit einem Song vor und teilten dazu ein Video zu “Reborn” bei YouTube.

There was probably no one in the 80s who didn’t have a poster of KIM WILDE hanging in their room or one of the stickers from Bravo magazine stuck somewhere. Together with her brother, she was responsible for many hits, snippets of which even today’s artists use in their songs and transport them into a modern world. 2023 scheint das Jahr der Bühnenjubiläen und Live-Alben zu sein. Kurz nachdem man sich VADER zum 40-jährigen Bühnenjubiläum reinziehen konnte, veröffentlichten MAYHEM “Daemonic Rites”. Und jetzt warten WATAIN gleich mit einer Live-Doppel-LP (inklusive Killer-Design-Extravaganza) auf, um 25 Jahre Blut auf Bühne zu zelebrieren und durch ihre Diskographie zu streifen. Produktionstechnisch beweisen die Schweden hierbei ein ähnlich gutes Händchen wie MAYHEM auf “Daemonic Rites”: “Die in Fire – Live in Hell” ist knackig produziert, weder zu sauber noch zu rumpelig und das WATAIN-Live-Feeling kommt definitiv rüber. 

Streifzug auf Schwedisch
WATAINs Setliste für “Die in Fire – Live in Hell” lässt keine Wünsche offen. Vom Publikum hört man nicht allzu viel, so dass das Live-Ritual auch nicht gestört wird. E. wendet sich selbstverständlich auf Schwedisch an sein Stockholmer Publikum und spricht so klar und deutlich, dass es eine wahre Wohltat ist. Kein übertriebener Pathos, keine Rockstar-Allüren – aber das nötige Charisma. Dass die live sehr umtriebigen WATAIN ihr Set beherrschen, ist kein Wunder und Schummeln fürs Album müssen die schwedischen Schwarzmetaller ebenfalls nicht. Atmosphärisch schaffen es WATAIN zudem stellenweise, die alte DISSECTION-Live-Atmosphäre heraufzubeschwören (etwa in “Before the Cataclysm”) – doch die damalige Vorband (2004) ist längst zum unangefochtenen Haupt-Act geworden. WATAIN gelingt mit “Die in Fire – Live in Hell” ein üppiges, überzeugendes Live-Doppelalbum. Geil.

„Damn, my neck hurts!“ Was für den gemeinen Metalhead nach einer relativ vertrauten Feststellung am Morgen danach klingt, erfährt an diesem frostigen Mittwochabend im Münchner Technikum eine völlig andere, ungleich makabere Bedeutung. Das anonyme True-Crime-Duo SKYND hat sich im Rahmen ihrer Europatour angekündigt und sind dabei keine Unbekannten: Erst im Mai war die Band in der gegenüberliegenden TonHalle zu Gast, als man die amerikanischen Metalcore-Durchstarter ICE NINE KILLS begleitete.

Dass SKYND nun mit lediglich einigen EPs und einer Handvoll Singles als Headliner zurückkehren, mag ungewöhnlich erscheinen, ist auf den zweiten Blick aber keineswegs überraschend. Schließlich erreicht der eigenwillige Mix aus Industrial, Alternative und Electronic-Pop nicht nur hartgesottenes Metal-Publikum. Vielmehr fischt die Musik in so ziemlich allen Gewässern, wie das bunt gemischte Publikum in der kleinen, doch gemütlichen Halle nahelegt. Zwischen Horror-Make-Up und Band-Cosplay tummeln sich natürlich Teile der Alt- und Goth-Szenen, aber auch – auf den ersten Blick zumindest – eher unbescholtene Konzertgänger:innen.

KNIFE BRIDE

All jene gleichermaßen ins Boot zu holen kann man also durchaus als Herausforderung sehen, gerade weil der Genre-Cocktail des Haupt-Acts als kleinster gemeinsamer Nenner doch so unterschiedliche Gäste anlockt. Dass die Briten von KNIFE BRIDE gerade einmal eine halbe Stunde Zeit haben, die ob der winterlichen Temperaturen ausgekühlten Münchner:innen vorzuwärmen, macht die Sache dabei nicht einfacher.

Exakt das ist in den ersten Minuten auch zu spüren, obwohl sich das Quintett schon beim Opener „Sacrifice/Surrender“ ins Zeug legt: Trotz beengter Platzverhältnisse schwingt Lauren Wise hinter dem Sampler die Hüften, während Gitarrist Sean Windle auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite vollen Körpereinsatz zeigt. Ein wenig wirkt es gar so, als spielten KNIFE BRIDE mit aller Macht gegen die leicht widrigen Umstände an: Die spärliche Lichtuntermalung lässt Teile der Formation über weite Strecken im Dunkeln, was die Bindung zum mittlerweile halb gefüllten Technikum natürlich schwerer macht, als es sein sollte.

KNIFE BRIDE haben mit den Rahmenbedingungen zu kämpfen

Da der basslastige und matschige Soundmix darüber hinaus die Samples nahezu komplett verschluckt, kommt auch atmosphärisch nur wenig in der Halle an: Zwar spendet die bayerische Landeshauptstadt höflich Applaus, Bewegung will vor der Bühne trotz groovender Nu-Metal-Riffs in „Grenade“ sowie knackiger Breakdowns aber erst im abschließenden „Permanent Smile“ einkehren. Einen Vorwurf machen können wir KNIFE BRIDE derweil nicht. Es sind wohl primär die Rahmenbedingungen, die dem Alternative- / Melodic Metalcore-Mix um die motivierte Sängerin Mollie Buckley heute Abend einen Strich durch die Rechnung machen.

Mit derlei Problemen muss sich der Headliner natürlich nicht herumschlagen, obwohl wir zwischendurch schon das Schlimmste befürchten: Minutenlanges, bisweilen ohrenbetäubendes Dröhnen lassen so manchen Fan während des Changeovers erst an der Technik und schließlich am eigenen Verstand zweifeln, bevor sich jegliche Sorge um Punkt neun doch in Wohlgefallen auflösen soll. Der Klang im Technikum ist glasklar, die nun komplett freigelegte Bühne eine stimmige Kulisse für das folgende Gruselkabinett: Während im Hintergrund Schlagzeug und Synthesizer das schlichte Setdesign einrahmen, wird der vordere Bereich zur Spielwiese für Frontfrau Skynd, die im Laufe der Show auch jeden Zentimeter zu nutzen weiß.

Zunächst aber eröffnet das Kollektiv den Abend in zurückhaltender und bedeutungsschwangerer Weise: Mit der charakteristischen Stimm-Modulation der Band kriecht „Richard Ramirez“ zum Auftakt unheilvoll nach vorne, um im Refrain dann erstmalig zu explodieren. Zu beschwingten Piano-Akkorden und einem sägenden Bass demonstriert Sängerin Skynd erstmals ihre gesamte Stimmgewalt, welche sich in kraftvoller Gestik und ausdrucksstarker Mimik widerspiegelt.

SKYND faszinieren das Technikum mit ihrem audiovisuellen Konzept

Keine Frage, das audiovisuelle Konzept SKYNDs ist gerade im Live-Kontext für einen nicht geringen Teil der Faszination verantwortlich, welche das Publikum quasi im Handumdrehen ergreift. Mit verstörendem Make-up, dem markanten Kopfschmuck und einer zugehörigen Performance bleibt die Musikerin zu jeder Zeit fest in ihrer Rolle, selbst wenn sie die makaberen Texte in „Jim Jones“ oder dem eindringlichen „Michelle Carter“ durch eine dezente Choreografie zu untermalen weiß.

Dass das Duo dabei mit zusätzlichem Live-Schlagzeuger arbeitet, aber um Backing Tracks nicht komplett herumkommt, liegt in der Natur der Sache: Zum Vorwurf machen will das im Technikum heute niemand, zumal sich SKYND bemühen, selbst rhythmische Feinheiten – wo möglich – durch live gespielte Drumpads wiederzugeben. Die impulsiven Streicher in der noch unveröffentlichten Single „Aileen Wuornos“ oder die eine oder andere zusätzliche Vocal-Spur in „John Wayne Gacy“ nehmen wir da gerne auch vom Band in Kauf, zumal der Gesang vor allem in den packenden Refrains über jeden Zweifel erhaben ist. Auf diese Weise geht natürlich auch das eingangs erwähnte Zitat der aktuellen Single “Bianca Devins” besonders unter die Haut – trotz oder gerade aufgrund des entsetzenerregenden True-Crime-Kontexts.

Neben einem neuen Song präsentieren SKYND nahezu ihr komplettes Werk

Obwohl SKYND im Verlauf der Show auf reguläre Ansagen und nähere Ausführungen verzichten, bleiben die Hintergründe der besungenen Morde nicht gänzlich unkommentiert: Gesprochene Intros im Stil klassischer TV-Berichterstattung versorgen die Menge zwischen den Stücken mit einigen Informationshäppchen, um den schaurigen Inhalt der Stücke nicht gänzlich in den Hintergrund zu drängen. Der ohrenbetäubende Beifall in den Pausen gilt dagegen allein der Band, welcher es in der zweiten Hälfte gelingt, mit den groovenden „Columbine“ sowie „Tyler Hadley“ weite Teile der Halle zum intensiven Training der Nackenmuskulatur anzuregen. Klar, dass es sich angesichts dieser Bilder selbst Bassist Father nicht nehmen lässt, sein Podest im Hintergrund in Richtung Bühnenrand zu verlassen.

Den vorgezogenen Höhepunkt runden SKYND schließlich mit dem gespenstischen wie atmosphärischen „Gary Heidnik“ ab, bevor nach rund 70 Minuten doch die Maske für einen Augenblick fällt: „Thank you and good night!“, heißt es kurz, aber aufrichtig in Richtung der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt, die sich vom grausigen wie vereinnahmenden Konzept der Band gerne hat gefangen nehmen lassen. Dass es keine Zugabe gibt, erklärt sich dagegen mit Blick auf die Diskografie: Mit Ausnahme eines Songs präsentierten uns SKYND heute ihren kompletten Backkatalog, dessen Hitformel uns wohl auch Morgen noch in bester Erinnerung bleiben wird, wenn vielleicht nicht unser Hals, aber definitiv der Nacken schmerzen wird.
