15.11.2023 - Listen to Dream Pop Artist Lauren Lakis’ “Fiesta and a Hell”

We spend our days at war
and our nights in love
No gods, no masters now
<a href="https://www.instagram.com/laurenlakis">Lauren Lakis</a> has transitioned from the rhythmic pulses of Baltimore to the sprawling expanses of Los Angeles, with her music encapsulating the city’s unique blend of hope and nihilism. Lakis’s work, characterized by its unfiltered, mysterious, and deeply impactful quality, represents a significant shift in the current shoegaze scene. Her latest release, “A Fiesta and a Hell,” delivers an emotionally charged punch, distinguished by its unadorned authenticity.
In the first strains of Watch You Run, there’s an initial languid procession reminiscent of a mournful lament, which then unexpectedly bursts forth into a cascade of shoegaze-inspired guitar riffs. Lakis’s vocal timbre evokes nuances of Shirley Manson, and as the chorus unfolds, one is transported to a scene that feels like it could be plucked straight from David Lynch’s oeuvre—a chanteuse serenading an intimate gathering of surly teens at the Twin Peaks Roadhouse.
The emotional Take My Hand is a fervent plea for connection and understanding, emphasizing the desire for companionship. Throughout the song, there’s a recurring theme of simplifying needs, emphasizing togetherness and carving out one’s own path, separate from societal expectations.
In Terror Tears, Lakis paints a vivid picture of societal disenchantment. The heart of the narrative beats around the fusion of spoon-fed dogma and standing tall against capitulation. The song is a potent rallying call, merging the energetic pulse of 80s punk, shoegaze, and goth rock with intense drumbeats and her vocals and guitar work bathed in echoey reverb.
You Keep Your Woman Down smoulders with an intensity that is both fervent and subtly menacing. Conjuring the ambiance of a classic spaghetti western, its looming guitar strums command attention. As the song unfolds, it begins with the hushed intimacy of an almost whispered secret, gradually guiding listeners through a rhythm that’s deliberate, yet imbued with a sense of grandeur. This evolution in sound suggests a dawning realization, with each refrain echoing like a mantra, as if seeking to convince its very singer of its truth.
Loud Voices shifts gears, evoking the nostalgic strains of a perhaps forgotten Liz Phair melody. It delicately balances on the knife’s edge between Riot-Grrrl ferocity and those lucid, introspective epiphanies at life’s intersections. The enveloping wash of shoegaze guitars serve not just as an accompaniment but as profound exclamation points, underlining the track’s depth of feeling and its profound pathos.
Leave Your Window Open delves into the deep currents of yearning and fragility, conjured by imagery of ajar windows and an aching wish for reconnection. The vocalist’s unwavering devotion and the surrender of self are poignantly underscored, as they pledge a lifetime’s allegiance to the cherished subject of their ardour.
The record concludes with several remixes for Terror Tears, Take My Hand, and Keep Your Woman Down.
Listen below:
“A Fiesta and a Hell” was put to tape in Austin, Texas, with the artistic hand of Modern Medicine (Wild Child, Josie Lockhart) at the production helm. The record was then refined through the mixing skills of Elliott Frazier from Ringo Deathstarr and mastered by the esteemed Christopher Colbert, whose resume includes works with Mazzy Star, Starflyer 59, and Leon Bridges. The album is out now via Green Witch Recordings (Pearl Earl, Pale Dian, Timothy Eerie).
Lakis and her ensemble have made their mark across the West Coast and Texas, performing alongside renowned groups like Ringo Deathstarr, Holy Wave, and Sea Wolf. Recent highlights include captivating sets at The New Colossus Festival in Manhattan, Dum Dum Fest in LA, and a memorable appearance at SXSW. Before the pandemic, they drew crowds at venues like the Doug Fir Lounge and The Catalyst Santa Cruz, collaborating with acts like Flor and Winnetka Bowling League. Moreover, Lakis displayed her individual prowess in a performance with rock luminary, Tracy Bonham.
A Fiesta and a Hell is available digitally and via cassette.

15.11.2023 - My Own Future Self (A Future Ghost): An Interview with GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE
The crunchy stomping of metal, the electrical pulse of metallic synths—this is what’s found in <a href="https://post-punk.com/kris-baha-and-ghosts-in-the-machine-tap-into-a-cyberpunk-dystopia-with-flesh-code/">GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE</a>‘s <a href="https://krisbaha.bandcamp.com/album/ghosts-in-the-machi-e">self-titled LP</a>. Taken straight from a long-lost Lawnmower Man or Johnny Mnemonic soundtrack, the album and alias is transformative in many ways to the Queer Australian/Italian-Armenian Kris Baha. GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE hurls between reality and a not-so-distant future of computerized control—something sci-fi movies from the 1990s only fantasized about. But such nightmares are just around the corner.
As the villainized child of Orgy and Nine Inch Nails, GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE nails the specific elements of 1990s drum & bass breaks, glitchy industrial beats and nu metal vocals, but this time around, the songs are governed by the intelligence of AI. We spoke with Baha about the project’s origins and songwriting processes, as well as the first live performance this winter.
How did you get the idea for GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE?
It came to me in a morning journaling session about 3 years ago during covid but I sat on the name / idea for a while, although, It was always haunting me from the back of my mind to explore it further. It wasn’t until I started getting more interested in the increasingly alarming developments of AI last year and realised it actually embodied the new pieces of music I was writing and felt like the soundtrack to what I was discovering via AI. Being heavily influenced by wanting to develop futuristic sounds and delve into clashing genres, a soundtrack warning sign of the future.
I realised it was an apt vessel for the music which was already veering into a hyper-punk, cyber wave-drum&bass direction. I then workshopped the concept further in my journal writing sessions, basically writing a developed story line to what I think the album would hopefully sound like.
The story of GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE unfolds as a sci-fi cyberpunk concept project inhabiting dual timelines. In one, we glimpse a trans-humanist future where human consciousness exists as intricate sequences of binary code, entwined and controlled by omnipresent AI systems. In this coded future, a profound awakening stirs among a select few who manage to mutate the code they were governed by, unlocking memories of their history that was erased by the AI. Through this discovery they realise they can traverse temporal boundaries, and utilise this power to send warning messages back in time to their former fully-human selves. These eerie missives carry a dire warning for humanity, urging them to rectify the course of society before the relentless march of artificial intelligence deprives humanity of its essence. In this terrifying future, humans are rendered mere spectre’s within the digital expanse, stripped of their souls, to become Ghosts In The Machine. The cyber odyssey unfolds from my own perspective, my own future self (a future ghost): a spectral entity endeavouring to caution its present incarnation against the ominous path it treads, attempting to avert a dystopian future.
In what ways do you approach the project differently from your solo work? What type of sound did you aim for when writing the album?
I approached this album with the core theme in mind, AI Apocalypse. With it being a concept album it was easy for me to collate some songs I already had kicking about and then start a lot of newer ones. Once the story was formed and before I wrote any new songs for the album I made a few presets, collected drum samples and made a blueprint for some sonic limitations & parameters to follow to allow myself to ascertain the sound of what I think the project/ album was to embody when I wrote the storyline. Even though the album travels to different musical places, I tried to use the same sounds throughout to thread the needle. The Ghosts project is veering into contemporary industrial/ hyper pop, cyberpunk, drum and bass, j/breakcore and psychotic ear candy sonic realms, leaving a bit of the classic EBM sound for my solo project so I can fully explore these sonic realms without past expectations.
I also went back to traditional songwriting , writing rapid fire sketches daily, to a 10 minute clock. Where-as previously for all my previous solo Kris Baha work, I would jam with my machines running live and multitrack everything then comp the best bits that I recorded, printing effects and anything else that I could commit on the way in. There are a few songs on the record which do sound like it could be a Kris Baha song but I left those there as the album is a collaboration with my future / past self, so it would make sense that there would naturally be some of those remnants transitioning over. In my mind, this was the most apt way of expressing the music with the themes and creating a coherent story instead of it being, ’new project new sound’. Moving forward I will release more music under Ghosts and Kris Baha separately.
Were you influenced by any literature or movies to build the GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE aesthetic?
I was heavily influenced by William S Gibsons Neuromancer & Burning Chrome, Masamunue Shirow’s Ghost In The Shell (Even though a Comic) and playing a heavy dose of Cyberpunk 2077 through out last year given the patch was updated and it was unplayable in 2020 when I first got it. Heavy doses of Neon Genesis Evangelion also played a part.
I went to Tokyo earlier this year and spent 2 weeks to finish this record and started writing bits for the next before my Asia tour started. I felt like I needed to be there to fully immerse myself in the cyberpunk hyper-madness of Kabukicho even more. I was also listening to a lot of The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails Year Zero which I am sure comes through loud and clear.
Can you talk a bit about your “Flesh & Code” music video? The process and inspiration?
The concept of the song is about being trapped in a world that’s governed by code jacked in via trans-humanist machine interfaces automated by AI systems. Our flesh and code trapped in networks that encrypt our ghosts. The merging of our consciousness within the digital realm. The majority of our minds remain as streams of 0’s and 1’s aligned with AI systems rather than the other way around. The coded realm now exists within them, dividing and destroying their physical and digital self although an awakening has occurred for some. There is a haunting presence of another realm, hinting at a past where humans had autonomy and control over themselves. Metaphorically, the track represents the desire to break free from societal constructs, experiencing alienation, doubts and glitches that plague one’s existence. It conveys a sense of not belonging and the search for a place where one truly belongs.
Sonically, the song traverses the cyber waves of the net experiencing glitched out swells of drum and bass, dreamy vocals that morph to screams in pain, in code, in the industrial hyper punk madness of the cyber ether. I wanted to create a video that blurred the lines of what is perceivably real and AI. The video was incredibly DIY as 80% of the video was shot on an iPhone 13pro by Duran Levinson and the rest while I was in Tokyo by Anthony Rilo where we just walked around Tokyo without getting caught as you technically need a permit to film. I then heavily edited the video in Davinci + used various AI GLM’s like Stable Diffusion, Kaiber and Runway GEN2 for all the animations that take place.
What can we expect from the GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE live show? How will it differ from a Kris Baha show?
The live show consists of projections, mapped and re-contextualised for real- time performance by CINEMA (Berlin, via Dallas, Texas) and incorporates AI- generated 3D Animations made for the album. The result is then further processed live through a series of modified broadcast equipment and contemporary modular video synthesisers. In total, negative space between the performance and visuals takes hold on 2 meshed screens angling at 45 degrees, creating a physical degree of separation between the audience and myself – becoming ever more trapped as a Ghost In The Machine. The first show will be premiered at <a href="https://ombrafestival.com/">Ombra Festival</a> this year.

15.11.2023 - British Darkwave Duo ANTI:AGER Debut New Album “Body of Flesh”

In this forest, constellations they try to hide
Shrouded by the branches, cloaking us from either side.
Ghosts scattered, revealing what came before
A<a href="https://www.instagram.com/antiager666">NTI:AGER</a>, a darkwave duo hailing from Exeter, England, comprises the Jones twins, Jack, who handles guitars, synths, and bass, and Alex, the voice behind the evocative lyrics while also taking on bass duties. The project took root in early 2020, and since then, their distinctive fusion of ethereal melodies, chilly rhythms, and introspective songwriting has carved out a unique niche within their genre.
Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of sources, ANTI:AGER’s musical kinship aligns with bands like Tears For Fears, Drab Majesty, Fields of the Nephilim, Twin Tribes, and more. In doing so, they have skillfully crafted a musical identity that marries nostalgia with forward-thinking innovation.
Opening with a gorgeous, mysterious synth instrumental, Ides of Winter, they delve into poetry with Outside, a melancholic reflection upon inner conflict and longing. The repeated refrain highlights the difficulty of conveying their true feelings, laughing on the outside while sounding funny in the twilight – hinting at a desire for change and transformation. Next, the eerie Coil describes a haunting, introspective journey through a dark forest, where ghostly figures and constellations are concealed by trees, hinting at hidden truths. This is followed by Bittersweet The Violence, which seeks healing but struggles with a desire to break free. The lyrics of Cloaked In Red evoke a scene of dethronement and confrontation with jaguars in the night. The scene is filled with intense emotions and a sense of restlessness. We take another interlude break with the gentle yet ghostly Dimension Falling. For Phantoms and Total Seduction, the band mused over philosophies like cryptomnesia and solipsism – which question theories of memory and life choices.
“With our second album, we wanted to incorporate a more exotic palette of influences, pushing the edges of the darkwave genre,” says the band. “The album has a more deliberate, expansive, and decadent part of our sound that weaves its way through the whole album. This is something we wanted to build on from our previous release – which had more of a singular sound…Once more, it was just the two of us creating and moulding the music to its final stages, including; recording/mixing/artwork. These are things that definitely impart our character across the whole project and make it deeply personal to us.”
“The lyrical themes are something that are more expressive of our rural surroundings also. Drawing on mysticism and Dartmoor for inspiration. The song Coil recounts a journey through a forest in the dead of night and the deep connection to nature you feel when wandering the moors. It would be disingenuous of us to start singing about inner city living…not our style.”

15.11.2023 - PRONG – State Of Emergency

(Marco Fiebag)

Says Clockwork Echo mastermind, Gabriel Ryan: “I experienced some severe loss and trauma during that period My mood ended up descending into hopelessness and self-destruction before giving way to acceptance and renewed strength. With adversity comes the opportunity to rebuild yourself into something that was far superior than what you had before.”

15.11.2023 - The Mystic Underground have new video and remix single out now: ‘Famous Last Words (Of A Generation)’

Out now is the all new The Mystic Underground video and remix single “Famous Last Words (Of A Generation)”. The track was written by the Brooklyn-based synthpop duo Vladimir Valette and Benedetto Socci.
Vladimir Valette explains the meaning of the song as follows: “The song is a bit of a lament about the passing of time and the rites of passage that we all experience at the expense of the spirit and fervor we tend to leave behind. I suppose it also touches on the inevitable generation gap where the next generation looks at the prior one as a bit of disappointment for leaving their ideals behind. So as you can tell, the song is definitely intended to be a candidate as the song of the summer…in Autumn.”
This is the video for the track.

15.11.2023 - Haunting and Heartbreaking: New York Dream Pop Duo Coatie Pop Reach Into the Ether in “Embody”
Coatie Pop‘s 2022 debut <a href="https://coatiepop.bandcamp.com/album/deathbed">Deathbed</a> remains a stunning mix of trip hop sensuality, bass-driven distortion, and powerful, cutting ethereal vocals. It placed extremely high on my personal best-of list, and was, with no hyperbole, all I wanted to listen to as the year came to a close. Comprised of partners Courtney and Robert Watkins – Coatie Pop tap into the wistful energy of The Sundays and the sensuality of HTRK while simultaneous channeling the bass and drum machine-driven gloom of Pink Industry, the secrets and shadows of the Twin Peaks roadhouse, and furious electronic spark of Invisible Limits. Despite any familiar touchstones, the duo remain one of the absolute freshest and most dynamic projects in the modern scene. We’ve been anxiously awaiting their next release, and with that in mind, we’re honored to premiere the latest single from the New York-based duo, titled “Embody,” which will be featured on their upcoming sophomore LP.
The video, shot by Bryce Riedesel, evokes the perfect gothic ghost story, shot in an old, dimly lit mansion and featuring a series of unsettling characters. Mr. Watkins often can be spotted ominously plucking is trademark bass guitar while Mrs. Watkins’ roots in dance throw shapes and shadows across the dark and dusty decor. There’s a deeply haunting undercurrent throughout the video that is reflected perfectly in the song, which contrary to some of the band’s previous <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ6HG1jXGBI&ab_channel=CoatiePop">barn burner singles</a>, is a more understated and heartbreaking affair. The track, which features some carefully strummed acoustic guitars, devastating drum patterns, and echo-dripping vocals, would fit right at home on an early Projekt Records compilation or a lovelorn mixtape from a forgotten era. Yet again, Coatie Pop offer up a stunningly fresh track that put them miles ahead of the modern pack.
Courtney Watkins offers a few words on the video and the history and significance of the location:
We shot this video at our favorite mansion in the small town of Coffeyville, KS – where we had our wedding and where I (Mrs. Watkins) have been going to obsessively since my grandma first took me when I was six. I’ve volunteered giving tours there, done the ghost tours, everything they had to offer. Violet Brown left the home and everything in it to the Coffeyville Historical Society in the seventies. Everything belonged to the Brown Family, and its interior holds the essence of the victorian era like no where else. It was incredible to use the space in a way its never been used, to create something so dear with loved ones there.

Pink Wonder existiert seit 2018.

15.11.2023 - BlazerJacket releases new EP, ‘The Second’ with samples from various cult Sci-fi releases- Out Now

Ukrainian cyberpunk music duo BlazerJacket has recently released their latest EP, titled “The Second”. This EP presents a diverse range of tracks, each embodying the duo’s cyberpunk and sci-fi thematic elements. The tracks are distinct, featuring voice samples from various influential sources.
The track “Dark Side” incorporates samples from “Star Wars”, while “DedSec” draws inspiration from the video game “Watch Dogs”. “Project 2501” is influenced by the anime “Ghost in the Shell”, and “Judgement Day” incorporates samples from “Terminator”.
Formed in 2017, BlazerJacket initially performed live, with half of their early material forming their first EP, “The First”, composed by Denis Cherryman. The remaining material, now part of “The Second”, was composed by band member Hybri.Mod. This latest work aligns with modern hard EDM/midtempo standards, blending industrial, guitar, and synthwave elements.
Related newsBlazerJacket releases 'Dark Side': new single from Ukrainian industrial/cyberpunk actTheir debut EP, “The First”, narrated a post-apocalyptic story through dialogues, focusing on two alien brothers on a mission to save Earth and humanity from a malevolent artificial intelligence. “The Second”, however, does not follow a specific narrative. Instead, it replaces dialogues with voice samples from movies, games, and anime, engaging the listeners’ imagination.
An intriguing detail for fans is the thematic linkage between the EPs. “The First” concludes with “Skynet”, leading into “Judgement Day” in “The Second”, which transitions the listener into the “Terminator” universe. A notable Easter egg for avid listeners is the matching FX sound at the end of “Skynet” in “The First” and at the beginning and end of “Judgement Day” in “The Second”.
For more insights, here’s a video for “Judgement Day”.

14.11.2023 - SILENT PLANET: SUPERBLOOM

Stonercore geniuses Håndgemeng are high-octane doom 'n'roll straight from the Norwegian tundra. Formed in Oslo in 2017, the members played together in various hardcore and punk bands in the early days, but the puzzle pieces didn’t come together until the riffs got slower and the amps got louder. Following up their early “Motorcycle Death Cult” and “Grim Riffer” EPs and playing shows constantly, the band wrote and recorded "Ultraritual," which offers a forceful, hard-hitting and spacey heavy rock journey over eight songs and millions of years, ready to enthuse fans of Mantar, Kvelertak or Domkraft. A bit of classic rock inspired by the riff masters of the 70s brewed together with the band's hardcore roots and the fuzzed-laden wizardry of modern stoner doom... riff after riff, banger after banger, Håndgemeng will take you from the depths of hell to the farthest reaches of space in a blink of an eye.

14.11.2023 - SHYLMAGOGHNAR: Convergence
