Out via Mecanica on December 1st is “Waves”, a double vinyl holding cult tracks from the German project New Scene.

New Scene was a project created in the late 80’s by Arno Müller and Markus Barth. They were part of the roaster of the German label BOY Records, together with acts like Time Modem, Cybex Factor and “O”. New Scene released two singles/mega-mixes in 1989/90 under the title of “Out of Control”, becoming both classics in the German Techno scene. Their third single “Tonight” also turned out to become a big success in the clubs and pushed New Scene to release their debut and only full-length album “Waves” in 1992 on BOY Records.

BOY Records was founded in June 1988 by Michael Zosel. It was distributed via ZYX Music and by 1992 Michael branched out creating the parent Future Sound Productions as an umbrella for BOY Records. Distribution was spread between ZYX Music, Bernhard Mikulski, and SPV (SPV Recordings) depending on the label and release.

Re-release New Scene album with bonus tracks

Mecanica now offers a Limited edition re-release of the New Scene album with remastered audio and as expanded double vinyl, including some bonus tracks: “The Walk”, “Machine” (both previously available only on a rare CD) and “The Fog” (b-side of the single “Tonight”). The re-release comes in new artwork by Salt (Stefan Alt/ANT-ZEN).

A few days ago we reported about a new EP by the Paris Berlin-based dark wave / EBM producer and visual artist DOEXL. She now has released a new music video, “Prey”. The video is a CGI co-production by her label/VFX studio VOAXS and the 3D artist Husi Rass.

The track is taken from her new EP, “Corpus” and seh describes it as “an EBM/Industrial techno track in a synesthetic journey where Sound and Technology merge into an Hard Dance party.”

On the occasion of the release of the book “Atom™, the nonconformist virtuoso”, the Valencian labels Fill-Lex Records and Industrial Complexx join forces to release “Transitions”, a limited edition of only 200 copies that brings together a select compilation of tracks by Lassigue Bendthaus on side A, and the EP The Overcom by Atom™.

Note that there will be no digital release of this EP, it will only be available on vinyl.

Side A opens with “Transitory (Anti-Matter Edit)”, an alternative version released only on the 1991 CD maxi Automotif, in which the German producer shows a premature ability to generate complex rhythmic patterns and futuristic electronic textures. “Information”, the second cut on this A-side, was originally released on Biohazard in 1992 and its sound mixes influences from styles such as EBM and electro. “Render” appears on the album of the same name, released in 1994 and only on CD, and here we can observe the sonic evolution of Lassigue Bendthaus in which he integrates a heavier rhythm.

The book is based upon Uwe Schmidt’s memoirs, derived from hours of interviews between the artist and the author. There are also a number of testimonies, some of them from people who were close to Uwe Schmidt or his projects, as well as from other collaborators who have a deep respect and knowledge of his work and have had the pleasure of being a part of it.

Die “Rising from The North” Co-Headliner-Tour führt die drei Bands auch quer durch Deutschland. Angekündigt sind Konzerte in Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, München, Dresden und Berlin.

SMOKE BLOW hatten zwar 2011 beschlossen, keine neuen Studioalben mehr zu schreiben und nach ihrer Tour 2012 nur noch vereinzelt Konzerte zu geben – jetzt gibt es aber doch zwei neue Songs, die Kieler haben außerdem zwei Konzerte angekündigt.

Einer der neuen Songs hat den Titel “Walking Dead”, die Band stellt ihn mit einem Video bei YouTube vor. Zusammen mit einem weiteren neuen Track ist “Walking Dead” Teil des Studio-Live-Projektes „Demolition Room II“.

Der erste Teil von “Demolition Room” erschien im Dezember 2018 und ist eine Art “Best-Of-Live”-Album: Die Platte wurde im Kieler Demolition Room aufgenommen, zu hören sind 15 Songs aus 21 Jahren Bandgeschichte. Die Fortsetzung “Demolition Room II” erscheint am 15. Dezember 2023.

Am selben Tag feiern SMOKE BLOW nicht nur die Veröffentlichung der Compilation, sie spielen auch beim Düsseldorfer LIEBLINGSPLATTE FESTIVAL im Club zakk das 2003er Album „German Angst“ in voller Länge.

Zudem haben SMOKE BLOW schon heute ihren traditionellen Jahresabschluss „Final Hands” für das Jahr 2024 angekündigt: Die Band tritt am 30.11.2024 in Hamburg in der Fabrik auf. Karten gibt es ab 22.November 2023, 10:00 Uhr.

Die Hardcore / Funk-Band SLOPE hat Mitte 2023 einen Plattenvertrag mit Century Media Records abgeschlossen. Jetzt legt man mit dem Clip “It’s Tickin’” einen brandneuen Track nach. Entnommen ist das Stück dem kommenden Album “Freak Dreams”, das am 2. Februar 2024 über das neue Label auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Reinhören ist darüber hinaus mittels des Musikvideos “True Blue” möglich.

Die neue Platte “The Shadow Inside” erschien am 17. November 2023 via Nuclear Blast Records. Ihr erstes neues Album seit 16 Jahren nahmen SADUS mit Juan Urteaga im Trident Studio auf, das Artwork kommt von Travis Smith.

Es gibt ja diese Bands, da steht man vor der Mauer der Melange aus Schönheit, schon gehört oder nicht beschreibbar. FEU FOLLET ist eine Ein-Mann-Band aus Lothringen, Frankreich, die von Alban Blaising gegründet wurde, um Einflüsse aus dem Wave-Bereich mit denen des Indie-Sektors zu vermischen. Ansonsten gibt es recht wenig Infos im Netz zu finden. Alexander Donat (Vlimmer) scheint sie irgendwie für sein Label entdeckt zu haben und leiht einzelnen Stücken auch seine Stimme.

Im weitesten Sinne Synth Pop mit harmonischen Linien, aber gleichwohl ein Sammelsurium verschiedenster schräger Tonagen. Dazu ein nicht zu beschreibendes Intermezzo aus Gefühl und Energie mit latent unterdrückter Dynamik. „Ghosts In The Machine“ klingt wie ein nie fertig gewordener Kraftwerk-Song. Die hingebungsvolle Gesangsdarbietung von Vlimmer gibt diesen, etwas wirr erscheinenden Klängen ein Gesicht. Hernach erklingt mit „Lazy Ass“ ein wundervoller Poprock-Song mit Dreampop Anleihen. Der gefühlvolle Gesang thront über einem zwischenzeitlich komischen Klangspektrum, der sich wie eine von Dali gemalte Traumsequenz anfühlt. Überhaupt scheint die musikalische Komponente einer verwirrenden Reihenfolge zu huldigen. Das folgende, stark an die 80er erinnernde „Living without“ wird sehr ruhig dargeboten und erinnert an eine reduzierte Version von Eurythmics. „Lost Locust“ hat dann wieder diesen wehklagenden, tief betörenden Gesang von Vlimmer als Mittelpunkt. Das folgende, einer Fahrstuhlmelodie gleichende „A Dream“ besitzt dieses galante Momentum, welches durchaus gesangstechnisch an die Solo-Projekte von Boa erinnern könnte. Danach regiert mal wieder das Chaos. Undurchdringliche Tonagen, verwirrende Klangkosmen, welche man durchaus als expressionistisch bezeichnen könnte, und mittendrin das Duett/Duell zwischen Vlimmer und dem Hauptgesang. Unerklärlich, wie die Zusammenfügung passt und überraschend, wie folgend eine weibliche Stimme dem Reigen den Stempel aufsetzt. „Road To Glory“ beherbergt einen feinen Refrain, aber diese Science Fiction-Loops scheinen nicht nur Kanten in die Harmonie zu setzen. Der letzte Song ist wieder geprägt von der weiblichen Gesangsstimme, die sich durch das Dickicht der Töne kämpft. Im Endeffekt bringt sie eine wundervolle Harmonie in ein verwunschenes, euphemistischen Klanggebilde, dessen schräge Darbietung den Genuss in Phasen zu schmälern scheint.

Fazit: Ein sehr gewöhnungsbedürftiges Werk, welches wunderschöne Momente des 80er Pop-Waves beherbergt, gleichwohl die Schräge und die Farbenfröhlichkeit (logischerweise mit schwarzer Tusche gezeichnet) des Jahrzehnts besitzt und nebenbei die Töne der Mondlandungsphase aus dem NASA-Kontrollzentrum in verwirrender Weise integriert. “Wir haben eine Platte gemacht, die wir hören wollten. Wenn ich diese Platte als Import in einem Plattenladen finden würde, wäre das meine neue Lieblingsband sein. Ich denke, es ist ein gutes Zeichen, wenn man Material schreibt, das man selbst gerne gehört hätte, als man sich zum ersten Mal mit einem Sound auseinandergesetzt hat.”

Überraschenderweise bleibt es diese Woche erstaunlich ruhig in den deutschen Albumcharts: Immerhin klettert die Punk Rock-Band SCHMUTZKI mit ihrem vierten Album “Schmutz de la Schmutz” auf Platz 18 – eine große Steigerung nach der letzten Platte “Mehr Rotz als Verstand” (2018, #79). Darüber hinaus macht sich vor allem die Vorweihnachtszeit bemerkbar: Sowohl UNHEILIG mit “Weihnachtslichter” (#23) als auch TARJA mit “Dark Christmas” (#39) wollen die stille Zeit musikalisch begleiten. Ein Glück, dass es davon abgesehen auch noch SODOM gibt, deren EP “1982” auf der 49 die Thrash-Fahne hochhält. Live knallt es dagegen bei TRIUMPH OF DEATH und “Resurrection Of The Flesh” auf Rang 51.

In 1981 Depeche Mode were: Vince Clarke, Andrew Fletcher, Martin Gore and Dave Gahan. When the Speak & Spell tour ended on Monday November 16 1981 at the London Lyceum, Depeche Mode knew they would end up with 3 soon after. In November 1981, Vince Clarke publicly announced that he was leaving Depeche Mode. Soon afterwards, Clarke joined up with blues singer Alison Moyet to form Yazoo (or Yaz in the United States).

Vince Clarke performed for the final time with Depeche Mode on Thursday 3 December for a television show, Off The Record, in Chichester. For those who wandered what that show looked like, you can now check it out below. Poet John Cooper Clarke was the support act.

Clarke also said he was sick of touring, which Gahan said years later was “bullshit to be quite honest”. Gahan went on to say he “suddenly lost interest in it and he started getting letters from fans asking what kind of socks he wore.”

In a later interview with Vice, Clarke would say that he left Depeche Mode because the band was young and weren’t getting along adding “nothing more, nothing less, no regrets”.

VALDRIN aus Cincinatti zeigen bei der Coverwahl für ihr viertes Album, dass sie wissen, wie alte Black Metal-Seelen in den 90ern einen Großteil ihrer Käufe tätigten: Gefällt das Cover, wird es gekauft. Mailorder und so. Oder im Plattenladen, der einen nicht reinhören ließ (auch das gab es). “Throne of the Lunar Soul” punktet bei Old School-Schwarzmetallern mit dem Zeichnungscover, das Underground-Charme und Detailverliebtheit verströmt. Die ersten Töne beweisen, dass die Amerikaner es wirklich voll auf – sagen wir einfach mal willkürlich – 1997 abgesehen haben. Produktionstechnisch achten VALDRIN auf transparenten Sound, der weder ins Rumplige noch ins Klinische abdriftet. 

Mit der Zeitmaschine im Jahr 1997 gelandet
VALDRIN mögen zwar aus Ohio stammen, doch musikalisch haben sich die Amis ganz auf Schweden und Norwegen in den 90ern fixiert. Irgendwann nach ihrer Gründung anno 2010 sind die Melodic Black Metaller in die Zeitmaschine gestiegen, im Jahr 1997 gelandet und nie mehr in die Gegenwart zurückgereist. Das bezeugen auch die 74 Minuten Spielzeit des vierten Albums “Throne of the Lunar Soul”. Die Keyboards scheinen direkt aus den Uralt-Zeiten von THE KOVENANT oder N.A.O.S. entsprungen, als möglichst authentische Instrumenten-Samples und realistische Orchestrierungen noch ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit waren. Für die schwarzmetallische Atmosphäre lassen sich VALDRIN von den entsprechenden Zeiten von THY SERPENT und DAWN inspirieren und in “Holy Matricide” sind sie schon so nah an DISSECTIONs “Thorns of Crimson Death”-Flamme dran, dass Ikarus` Flügel hastig schmelzen würden. 

Nostalgie in Überlänge
VALDRIN zeigen auf “Throne of the Lunar Soul”, dass sie Ideen haben – sich diesen aber selten entziehen können. So wird “Throne of the Lunar Soul” zu einem Nostalgie-Trip in Überlänge und VALDRIN haben die Tendenz, sich in ihren Songs zu verlieren. “Paladins of Ausadjur” ist sicherlich ein Gegengewicht, da hier die Amis kompakter agieren und sich gar an ein Akkordeon trauen. Trotzdem bleibt ihr viertes Werk nur ein Album für Melodic Black Metal-Fans, die sich auf diese Weitläufigkeit und die kompromisslose Nostalgie einlassen wollen.

Pavor Nocturnus is an Italian solo-project driven by Eugenio Mazza. He this year released his newest album by Cyclic Law. “Ecatombe” is a poignant production featuring elements of Dark-Ambient and Cinematic music while you’ll notice numerous Industrial sound treatments and slow rhythms. Q: What can you tell us about your music background and what have been the triggers to set up Pavor Nocturnus?

Eugenio: I think the roots of my music are in between my classical piano studies, extreme Metal and Soundtracks for movies and videogames. When I started my project I was in search of a musical language that could fit with my expressive needs and that could give me the creative freedom I was looking for, despite I was not that much into Electronic music; later on I started to discover more Electronic artists and genres.

Eugenio: Pavor Nocturnus Is my personal display of what I experience in my life, a musical manifestation connected with fear (that lies in the monicker too), dreams and some kind of spiritual perception, although I am not a religious person.

The sound of the project is variable but its foundations are dark and unsettling as a nightmare. Sometimes it is unclear for me too, but I am understanding that the better I feel (as a person) the darker my music becomes.

Q: Tell us a bit more about your way of composing music? What are the main stages in the creation of your sounds/noises/field recordings/rhythms etc. resulting to tracks/albums?

Eugenio: If the concept is well defined in my mind I start to translate it with sound design or collecting samples, otherwise I usually start playing with some instruments and I get carried away.

I have made large use of field recordings while I was working on my previous album inspired by H. Bosch’s paintings, but for this album I chose to sculpt sounds on synths or work with samples and previous recordings. When I have all the sounds I need I start to record and build the tracks, trying to keep in mind how to reproduce them live.

Q: Your new album “Ecatombe” has been composed during the confinement. What has been the impact of this particular situation to the creation- and content of the album? And what do you want to express?

Eugenio: “Ecatombe” originates from the time spent in confinement but it is not an album about the pandemic. It is a journey through the thoughts and emotions that stormed during those days. Many suggestions have been collected from different inputs, I have been diving into very unpleasant moods, so I decided to translate all those feelings in sounds, re-elaborate them as archetypes and finally dispel them.

One thing (I think) I wished to express was the urge to escape that stagnant existence we all were living.

Q: What have been the high lights in the creation of this work? And how do you look back at the result right now?

Eugenio: Working on the tracks was a smooth process, the concept behind each composition was clear except for “Abisso” and “Supplica”; I had to understand what I was experiencing while composing those tracks, get back to the moment when my mind was drowning and I could not see the bottom of the abyss. That’s why “Abisso” is the longest track of the album, like an endless descent.

I think this is my most intimate album so far, I am pleased with the result and with the feedback coming from people during live performances.

Q: Talking about performances, how do you transpose your music and equipment from the studio to the stage and how do you see yourself as a live artist/performer?

Eugenio: I usually try to build the foundations of my tracks on the same setup I will use for live performances, then I make some adjustments and prepare samples for the synths/sounds I can’t take with me live. I also like to have some space for improvisation, the live tracks will not sound exactly the same as they are on the album.

The more gigs I play, the better I understand how I want to engage people during my performances, figuring out what is effective in a live set and what is not.

Considering that there is no interaction between me and the audience except for the music, I am trying to improve my formula to obtain that kind of engagement I look for when I am attending a concert.

Right on the heels of the release of their new single “The Art of Lust”, Deep Red releases “The Art of Lust (Love=Death Remix)”. The remix offers a harder-hitting version of the single or as the band puts it, “this remix takes the original and punches it up a notch or two.”

And they add: “Love=Death is an obscure artist who recently approached us about a collaboration. Glad we took this chance because the remix takes the song in a completely different direction. We will definitely be working together again.”

The single is available on Spotify and all major digital platforms including Bandcamp.

Backstage (Werk), Munich, Germany 9th November 2023Project Pitchfork - “Tour 2023” - Support: Chemical Sweet Kid Since 1990, PROJECT PITCHFORK has been on tour almost every year. In doing so, Peter Spilles and his bandmates often take their ways not only through Germany but also across Europe or even to the other side of the Atlantic. Attending at least one PROJECT PITCHFORK concert each year has become a lovely tradition for me. Whenever possible, I try to go more often. And when a new album finally seems to be on the horizon after what feels like an eternity, the anticipation is even greater. We’ll have to wait a bit longer, though. It looks like the new album won’t drop until March 2024. But don’t worry, Peter and the gang have some fresh tunes in the bag. And sticking to the whole “never change a running system” vibe, they’ve brought back CHEMICAL SWEET KID as special guests, who were already on the track on last year’s tour.

Die australischen Black/Death Metaller KING haben mit „Fury and Death“ das dritte Album veröffentlicht. Die 2014 in Melbourne, Australien, gegründete Band besteht aus Dave Hill (Gitarren), Tony Forde (Gesang) und David Haley (Schlagzeug) und hat kürzlich den langjährigen Live-Bassisten Tim Anderson zu ihrem festen Lineup hinzugefügt.

Mit einem stimmigen Intro plus gutem Opener „Perception Ignite“ gelingt KING ein guter Start in das Album. Der anschließende 3. Track, „Volcano „, ist das Highlight des Albums. Der bietet fast alle Trademarks der Band, tolle Melodie und Rhythmik, dabei zugleich aggressiv und mitreißend. Was noch hinzukommt ist eine gewisse Kälte á la IMMORTAL, die bekommt man im passend betitelten „Mountain of Ice“ frostig um die Ohren gehauen. „Black Dimension“ zeigt dann noch die hymnische Seite im Sound der Australier bei gleichblebender Härte und Aggressivität.

Wie bei vielen Alben ist auch hier die 2. Hälfte des Albums mit guten Tracks versehen, die über dem Durchschnitt sind, aber einen weiteren Hit haben meine Ohren hier nicht mehr gefunden. Wobei, den Schlusstrack „To the Stars“ hätte ich da fast vergessen, da haben KING noch mal einen mitreißenden Song rausgehauen.

Fazit:
Bereits der Vorgänger „Coldest of Cold“ hat mir richtig gut gefallen und „Fury and Death“ schließt sich da nahtlos an. Das Album bietet eine knappe Dreiviertelstunde lang mitreißenden Melodic Death/Black Metal, der zudem noch mit kalter und majestätischer Atmosphäre seinen individuellen Sound unterstreicht. Hört euch das Album in voller Länge bei Black Metal Promotion an und werdet Fan. (eller)

(By our UK correspondent Simon Helm of Cold War Nightlife) This is a review of yesterday’s event at the London School of Economics where Vince Clarke did a debut solo show supported by Sunroof (comprising Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones).

Vince Clarke admits that he is a little nervous. The confession comes as he adjusts his set-up between songs. Normally, Andy Bell would step into these gaps, but this is not an Erasure show. It is a performance of “Songs of Silence”, Clarke’s album of songs based on drones. There is no need for concern: the sold-out crowd in a basement venue at the LSE is a friendly one (look – there is Neil Arthur from Blancmange!); and the spaces between tracks are exactly what the album’s title promises.

The event is billed as Vince Clarke’s first ever solo performance – but, of course, it is not. Clarke is a serial collaborator, who has spent his career working with other talents. Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly, Erasure, The Illustrious Company, VCMG – even when the prime mover, Clarke has sought out others to share the experience and the credits. Tonight, the limelight is shared with his friend, Reed Hays, and a cameo from the indomitable Sarah Jane Morris, while Richard Evans from the Erasure Information Service tweaks the lighting. Clarke is more exposed than usual, but he is not alone.

It might also be a reference to the recent losses of his friends, Robert Marlowe and Andy Fletcher. The cover photo shows Clarke in stark relief, and the cruelty of time is written into the songs. Performed live, they lose none of their emotive content, and Hays’ cello underlines the sadness of “The Lamentations of Jermiah.” Even “Blackleg,” a version of the traditional miners’ song made popular in a more combative form by Steeleye Span and the PCA Band, is ominous and melancholy. Grainy footage of miners walking from a pit invokes something lost – like Test Dept without their fine-tuned debris.

The appearance of Sarah Jane Morris for “Passage” adds a touch of glamour to the otherwise spectral drones and haunting rhythms. Clarke seems relieved to have the focus on another part of the stage, but he warms to the experience as the show continues. By the time of “Last Transmission,” he can’t hold back a full-on smile. The audience – most of whom have followed Clarke’s career for more than four decades – never doubted that it would be a special night. Clarke, it seems, has to pass through it to agree.

Support came from the Sunroof project of Gareth Jones and Daniel Miller. Facing each other across blinking panels of Eurorack modules, the two great producers embarked on a journey into improvised electronics that led down unpredictable tributaries of blips and webs of bloops. Sunroof’s shows are as unique as snowflakes and even cooler, as they harness the flow of electricity to weave magical textures. On a stage filled with Mute’s main superconductors, they played their roles as human Tesla coils with inspiration.

(Photo by Elliot Pietrapiana) The French postpunk band Corpus Delicti comes back with a new single, “Chaos”, 28 years after their last album. “Chaos” is now available on Youtube. The single will also be released as a 7inch vinyl which will also include an exclusive B-side “The Crown”.

“Chaos” was produced in the United States by American musician William Faith (Faith And The Muse, March Violets) and was mastered by Grazz (U2, Pogues, Prodigy, Kills..) at The Exchange (London). The video was directed by Stéphane Lionardo.

About Corpus Delicti

Corpus Delicti was formed in Nice in 1992 by Sébastien (vocals), Franck (guitar), Chrys (bass) and Roma (drums). Their debut album “Twilight” was released in 1993. After two more albums, the band broke up in 1997. They reunited 23 years later and signed with the American label Cleopatra, who are preparing to reissue of the band’s backcatalogue. Roma, no longer able to play due to health reasons, was replaced by Laurent Tamagno, drummer for M83 among others.
