Mit “The Acceptance. The Sorrow” wird in einigen Tagen das neue Album der Post-Hardcore-Band WISENT erscheinen. Es ist das erste Album des Quartetts aus Leipzig, welches aus Sänger Stephen Lyons, Bassist Morris Duff, Gitarrist Mathias Bauer und Drummer Oliver Ruß besteht.

“The Acceptance. The Sorrow” wird am 1. Dezember 2023 via Devil Duck Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach “Invincible” mit “Over The Horizon” nun einen weiteren Video-Clip.

Zum vorherigen Song “Shelter” steht seit Juli 2023 ein Videoclip via YouTube auf Abruf bereit. Es ist der erste Track mit dem neuen Sänger Fabian Getto, zu dessen Verpflichtung Mastermind René Berthiaume Folgendes zu sagen hat:

“Wir haben einen offenen Casting-Aufruf gemacht und Fabian hat uns eine Gesangsperformance von ‘Renegades’ geschickt, die unsere Aufmerksamkeit erregte. Er hatte etwas Besonderes an sich, und wir mussten dieser Intuition folgen. Gleich beim ersten Treffen hatten wir eine unglaublich gute Verbindung und einen produktiven und kreativen Tag im Studio. Es scheint, als ob exakt die Person, die wir mit unserem öffentlichen Castingaufruf gesucht haben, endlich den Weg zu uns gefunden hat.”

Produziert wurde “Shelter” von René Berthiaume und Cleo Tiger, den Mix übernahmen Robin Leijon sowie Berthiaume und das Mastering Dom R. Crey. Derzeit arbeiten EQUILIBRIUM an weiteren neuen Songs.

Killing Joke has announced the death of its iconic guitarist, Kevin “Geordie” Walker. The statement reads as follows: “With deep sadness, we announce that Kevin ‘Geordie’ Walker passed away at 6:30am on 26th November 2023 in Prague. He was in the presence of his family when he succumbed to a stroke. We are heartbroken. Rest in peace, brother.”

Kevin “Geordie” Walker passed away on Sunday, November 26, in Prague, Czech Republic. He had suffered a massive stroke two days prior and was only 64 years old.

Luca Signorelli, a close friend of Walker, confirmed the news, stating on Facebook: “This morning, I learned that Kevin ‘Geordie’ Walker died a few hours ago in Prague, following a massive stroke last Friday.” Signorelli described Geordie as his closest friend outside of his family, adding that Walker was known for his straightforwardness and selectiveness in social interactions. Martin Atkins from Killing Joke also acknowledged Walker’s passing, expressing his grief by sharing a music video and posting on X (formerly Twitter), with the hashtag “#GodBless Geordie Walker”.

The track, mixed by Tom Dalgety, was part of a special event titled “Killing Joke – Follow The Leaders”, where the band performed its first two albums in full, along with several warm-up shows, including one at London’s 100 Club.

After several years in the making, The Sixth Chamber is back with the full-length 12-track album, “Beyond The Night Veil”. The new album, “Beyond The Night Veil”, begins with a live in-person recording of Transylvanian gray wolves setting a distinctly vampiric tone. Musically the album blends gothic rock, doom and retro metal.

Special guest musicians on the album include keyboardist Alan St. Jon of Alice Cooper/Billy Squier fame, Steve Jansson of Crypt Sermon, and Canadian violin virtuoso Lillian Liu. The Sixth Chamber consists of Rahne Pistor, Bobby Parker and Erik Peterson.

The Sixth Chamber was formed by Rahne Pistor in 2001. The band released several gothic, doom, metal, experimental, blues, psychedelic, fantasy/horror and poetic influenced albums. “Beyond The Night Veil” will be available on Spotify and all major digital platforms by December 1st.

Das Dark Ambient-Projekt KARITI hat einen Labeldeal bei Lay Bare Recordings unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird die in Russland geborene und nun in Italien lebende Solo-Künstlerin ihr neues Album “Dheghom” veröffentlichen. Es ist nach “Covered Mirrors” (2020) das zweite Album der Musikerin, die bei den Aufnahmen von Marco Matta (GRIME) unterstützt wurde. Auch konnte als Gast DORTHIA COTTRELL (WINDHAND) begrüßt werden.

“Dheghom” wurde gemeinsam mit Lorenzo Della Rovere aufgenommen und gemixt und wird am 2. Februar 2024 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track “A Mare Called Night” zu hören.

Zwei völlig verschiedene Wege zu den Sternen, die sich dennoch ähneln: DREAM UNENDING und WORM laden zur interstellaren Reise ein, einer spannenden Reise. Sowohl DREAM UNENDING als auch WORM bringen in ihr jeweiliges Genre neue Impulse durch die furchtlose Kombination von dem, was ansonsten nur selten verbunden wird. Im Zentrum steht Doom-Death, der mal blumig-proggig und mal boshaft und nahe am Black Metal ist. Das tolle Artwork von Mark Riddick zeigt ziemlich genau, was die Rezipienten erwartet – und welche Gestalt welche Band verkörpert, wird sehr schnell deutlich.

Neue Impulse im Doom-Death: Sowohl DREAM UNENDING als auch WORM fügen dem Genre neue Facetten hinzu
Schon das letztjährige „Song Of Salvation“ zeigte, dass DREAM UNENDING keine typische Doom-Death-Band sind. Ihr Beitrag zu dieser Split geht aber noch weiter: Die beiden Musiker spielen ihre Variante der grimmig-langsamen Musik noch ausufernder und bunter als in der Vergangenheit. „So Many Chances“ ist sehr progressiv, reiht jazzige Soli an Fusion-Gitarren und lässt die Komposition größtenteils ziemlich entspannt fließen. Zwischendurch wird es melodisch, nur um wenig später wieder verkopfte Brücken zwischen den Stilen zu schlagen. „If Not Now When“ punktet mit einem starken Mainriffiff und baut eine Atmosphäre auf, wie sie PALLBEARER auf ihrem jüngsten Album „Forgotten Days“ auffahren“, allerdings mit noch mehr Prog-Spielereien. Das Problem an diesen beiden Songs ist aber identisch zum letzten Album: Die Musik geht nicht zu Herzen.

Nach über 20 Minuten Gitarrengenudel zeigen sich WORM deutlich grimmiger und schrulliger als ihre Splitpartner. WORM spannen dreimal den Bogen zwischen symphonischem Black Metal wie STORMKEEP (heute) oder OBTAINED ENSLAVEMENT (damals) und Doom Death. Das klingt in der Praxis deutlich besser als in der Theorie. Erstens sind WORM ordentliche Instrumentalisten, zweitens lenken sie Ihre Songs sorgfältig zwischen den Polen und erschaffen eine schauerliche, aber auch kosmische Atmosphäre. In „Ravenblood“ dominiert die Black Metal-Seite und ist stellenweise noch recht kitschig, „Midwinter Tears“ ist etwas zerfahren und konfus, aber „Sea Of Sorrow“ mit seinen virtuosen Leadgitarren, tollen Früh-ANATHEMA-Riffs, grimmigen Vocals und kraftvollem Uptempo-Finale ist dann das eindeutige Highlight auf „Starpath“.

Gute Split-Releases waren in den letzten Monaten eher rar gesät, dabei ist dies eines der spannendsten Formate, um bekannte Bands in einem neuen Kontext und auch mal außerhalb der Komfortzone zu erleben. DREAM UNENDING zeigen sich in ihren beiden Longtracks sehr progressiv im Sinne der Siebziger, verlieren aber immer wieder ihre Kompositionen aus den Augen und schaffen es nicht, emotional mitzureißen. WORM brauchen etwas, bis sie sich ins Herz der Hörenden spielen, haben aber am Ende die Sympathien auf ihrer Seite. So oder so, wer Lust auf Unkonventionelles auf diesem Genre hat, ist genau richtig – sofern man damit leben kann hat, dass es die großen, emotionalen Gänsehautmomente woanders gibt.

Die Power Metal-Band ALTERIUM hat mit “Siren’s Call” eine weitere neue Single als Musikvideo online gestellt.

Im Oktober 2023 veröffentlichte die Gruppe mit “Bismarck” ein SABATON-Cover mitsamt Video-Clip. Zuvor ist mit “Drag Me To Hell” eine erste Single der Italiener erschienen, die erst neulich einen Labeldeal bei AFM Records unterschrieben haben. Der Song, der von Lars Rettkowitz (FREEDOM CALL) produziert wurde, behandelt Themen aus der “World of Warcraft”.

“Eine meiner größten Leidenschaften”, offenbart Sängerin Nicoletta Rosellini. “In diesem Track erzählen wir einen Teil der Geschichte des heldenhaften Paladins Bolvar Fordragon, der, nachdem er die Flammen des Drachen überlebt hat, das ultimative Opfer bringt und sich auf den Gefrorenen Thron setzt, um Herrscher der Geißel zu werden.”

Der Albumtitel „Abseits Des Lichts” beschreibt den lyrischen Ansatz der Lieder, die sich mit Schmerz, Leere und dem animalischen Aspekt des menschlichen Geistes befassen. Musikalisch hat GRAU seit seinem Debüt einen moderneren und komplexeren Ansatz gewählt und deckt die komplette Bandbreite von düsteren Doom-Parts über Midtempo-Grooves bis hin zu schreddernden Blastbeats ab.
„Abseits Des Lichts” wurde über mehrere Monate in den Jahren 2022 und 2023 von Felix Rößger bei Gin’Fused Sounds aufgenommen, gemischt und gemastert. Die Melodic Heavy Metal-Band THE GRANDMASTER hat mit “Black Sun” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Skywards” (2021) das zweite Album der internationalen Band, die sich aus Sänger Per Johansson (FATE, UREAS), Gitarrist Jens Ludwig (EDGUY), Drummer Mirkko DeMaio (CHALICE OF SIN, THE FLOWER KINGS) sowie Bassist und Keyboarder Alessandro Del Vecchio (EDGE OF FOREVER, JORN) zusammensetzt.

Mit “Medusa” wird in einigen Wochen das neue Album der Hard Rock-Band RUSSELL – GUNS erscheinen. Es handelt sich dabei um ein neues Projekt, das dem Namen nach von Jack Russell (GREAT WHITE) und Tracii Guns (L.A. GUNS) ins Leben gerufen wurde. Beteiligt sind zudem auch Johnny Martin, Shane Fitzgibbon und Alessandro del Vecchio.

“Medusa” wird am 19. Januar 2024 via Frontiers Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es mit “Next In Line” einen Video-Clip.

Nicht einmal eine Viertelstunde dauert der Ritt durch die Finsternis und doch fühlt es sich an wie eine Ewigkeit. Es ist eine Kunst, die CELESTE über die Jahre perfektioniert haben. Selbst wenn die Franzosen ihrem eigenwilligen Genre-Cocktail mit dem letzten Album „Assassine(s)“ (2022) beizeiten sogar so etwas wie Wärme beimischten, bewahrte sich das Fundament seinen bedrückenden Grundcharakter.

Genau an dieser Stelle setzt „Epilogue(s)“ an, dessen drei Songs bereits während der Aufnahmen eben jener Platte entstanden und mit ein wenig Verspätung den Zyklus zu Ende führen sollen. Dementsprechend bleiben CELESTE in „Il se vide lentement“ der jüngeren Marschrichtung treu: Die massiven Soundwände bewegen sich zwischen Sludge, Post und Black Metal und können für das ungeübte Ohr zunächst durchaus überwältigend wirken.

CELESTE wagen sich auf “Epilogue(s)” sogar in gänzlich neues Terrain vor
Das ist natürlich so gewollt, denn in die monochrome Welt des Quartetts muss man voll und ganz eintauchen, um sie richtig wertschätzen zu können. Dann erst erschließt sich der anfangs erdrückende Kosmos und gewährt Einblick in die zugrundeliegende Melancholie, die „Plisse les yeux jusqu’au sang“ eben auch zu einem ungemein emotionalen Stück macht.

„Epilogue(s)“ teilt sich in dieser Hinsicht auch einen entscheidenden Charakterzug mit dem zugehörigen „Assassine(s)“, geht aber in puncto Zugänglichkeit noch einen Schritt weiter: Mit dem englischsprachigen „With Idle Hands“ wagen sich CELESTE tatsächlich in gänzlich neues Terrain vor. Dank Gastsänger Tims (GRIVO) in sich gekehrter, warmer Singstimme erhalten die zurückgenommenen Post-Rock-Arrangements ein erstaunlich feinfühliges Sprachrohr. Dass es ein derart experimentelles Stück nicht auf das eigentliche Studioalbum schaffte, ist so verständlich wie es als Abschluss dieses Kapitels schlüssig scheint. Als hätten wir uns nach diesem fortwährenden Ritt durch die Dunkelheit endlich mit unserer Situation abgefunden – und nur für uns die Schönheit in der Tristesse entdeckt.

Kevin “Geordie” Walker’s incredible life has sadly come to a close. For the last four decades, the guitarist for <a href="https://www.instagram.com/killingjokeband">Killing Joke</a> was anything but conventional, garnering widespread acclaim for his brilliance, ingenuity, and impact. As of this writing, the cause of death on Saturday night appears to have been a stroke.

His death was confirmed on Sunday by friends of Walker, such as musician <a href="https://twitter.com/marteeeen">Martin Atkins</a>, as well as from representatives of Killing Joke:

Born on the 18th of December 1958 in Chester-le-Street, England, and raised in Milton Keynes, his childhood nickname came from his ‘Geordie’ accent. Walker later relocated to London to pursue studies in architecture, a chapter that serendipitously led to his pivotal role in the formation of Killing Joke in 1979. This new trajectory was set in motion when Walker responded to an advertisement placed by Jaz Coleman. Remarkably, prior to this, Walker had not played in a band, making his eventual mastery of the guitar and his significant contributions to the group all the more extraordinary. Walker and Coleman formed the foundation of Killing Joke, with their enduring collaboration being legendary for its consistency.

Although Geordie Walker shared a first-wave post-punk background with contemporaries Daniel Ash, Bernard Sumner, and Billy Duffy, his guitar chops and experimental ethos distinguished himself as a distinct entity, combining the intricate, reverberating, and scratchy textures of post-punk instrumentation with some of the most creative and memorable heavy riffs in rock history.

Geordie Walker played a rare golden arch-top Gibson ES-295 filtered through two separate amplifiers, producing a captivating sense of delay. His guitar playing, characterized by bold and assertive arpeggios, conveyed raw, visceral anger and profound beauty. At high volumes, his distorted tones created a wildly harmonious effect, evocative of both shamanic and psychedelic influences. He wove a deep, almost spiritual connection in his rhythm and energy.

Among Geordie Walker’s admirers was Jimmy Page, who extolled Walker’s guitar sound as “really strong.” Further accentuating this legacy was Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, who lauded Walker’s guitar prowess. Shields characterized Walker’s technique as “this effortless playing producing a monstrous sound,” an eloquent tribute that encapsulates Walker’s unique ability to meld effortlessness with the powerful, resonant sound that became his trademark.

The late 80s and early 90s saw a decline in new wave and synthpop, prompting Killing Joke to adopt a louder style. Walker’s experimentation during this era was diverse. Geordie Walker’s guitar artistry was a defining feature on four notable albums: Killing Joke’s Extremities, Dirt, and Various Repressed Emotions (1990), Pandemonium (1994), Democracy (1996), and the industrial supergroup Murder, Inc.’s self-titled album (1992). This period marked a significant shift in Walker’s musical style, as he embraced hard rock and heavy metal influences, reintroducing a more heavy, overdriven sound. On Pandemonium, he experimented with crunchy, repetitive palm-muted power chord riffs, indicative of a departure from his new wave roots.

Walker’s musical repertoire extends beyond the realm of Killing Joke: he was also a pivotal figure in industrial music supergroups such as Murder, Inc. and The Damage Manual, contributing his unique guitar stylings and artistic vision to these groups. He also produced UK girl punk rock act Mary-Jane.

In 2021 <a href="https://post-punk.com/jaz-coleman-peter-hook-geordie-walker-release-k-division-ep/">Killing Joke released</a> K÷93, a collection of three long-lost songs featuring Geordie Walker, Jaz Coleman and Joy Division/New Order’s Peter Hook.

Killing Joke’s last album, Pylon, was released in 2015. An EP titled Lord of Chaos was released in 2022, featuring the original members of the band.

Background/Info: Kryptogen Rundfunk is a Russian solo-project driven by Artem Ostapchuk. He was also running the label Zhelezobeton. He moved to The Netherlands last year and set up a new label Base Station and distribution company Fonodroom. He’s now also ready with a new album of Kryptogen Rundfunk which is the fourth one in the project’s history.

The analogue sound treatments and Abstract/Experimental character are often reminding me of 80s experiments. But the main strength behind this approach is that it remains pretty accessible and fascinating.

He is known to engage in live performances, often accompanied by a coterie of fellow death mages from his inner circle. These gatherings are where one can experience the haunting, ethereal tones he conjures, offering an auditory experience that blends the mysterious with the mesmerizing.

Qyburn presents a novel interpretation of the classic gothic genre, focusing heavily on creating immersive, atmospheric auditory experiences. His music blends the distinctive, rhythmic pulse of chiptune with the haunting, synthesizer-driven style reminiscent of pioneers like Tangerine Dream, Tuxedomoon, Angelo Badalamenti, Vangelis, and Jean-Michel Jarre. This fusion results in a sound that is both cinematic and nostalgic, yet distinctly contemporary. The defining feature of Qyburn’s work is his expressive and resonant vocal delivery, which serves as the cohesive element that unites the diverse influences in his music.

“The record is a concept album, inspired by my progressive rock heroes,” he says. “It tells the story of a man summoned to the remote manor home of a long lost love from his past. Eager to find out if their connection remains as strong as before, he travels far to her remote home only discover that she is not what she appears to be. Unbeknownst to him, Cynthia has become a succubus, and is luring him into a sacrificial ritual in order to consume his soul.”

The album commences with She Breathes, a melancholic tale weaving the story of love reignited through letters spanning great distances beneath a canopy of stars. It fondly recalls a young, fulfilling romance that once completed life, while simultaneously contemplating the relentless march of time and the ephemeral nature of memories. Yet, through the passage of years, a persistent bond and yearning for reconnection persist, beautifully capturing the enduring themes of love, longing, and time’s unyielding progression. The track is elevated by a sultry saxophone solo, adding a layer of emotive depth.

Following this is Cynthia, a track steeped in profound nostalgia and the ache of lost love. It conjures vivid, surreal recollections of a past lover, encapsulating a relationship that continues to haunt the singer’s psyche. The song navigates through a landscape of regret and yearning, with the singer’s quest to her door symbolizing a poignant effort to reclaim a connection with the past and reawaken dormant feelings.

Loose Lips poignantly captures a deep sense of alienation and a heartfelt longing for reconnection within a relationship marked by estrangement and evolution. It delves into a profound desire to reignite both physical and emotional intimacy, all while acknowledging the time that has slipped away. The song articulates a journey from youth to adulthood, signaling a readiness to let go of past burdens. It beautifully blends a spectrum of emotions – desire, nostalgia, and a hopeful aspiration for rekindling an old bond. Moving forward, the poetry of Ruby Red‘s lyrics portrays a solemn figure, the “bearer of souls,” who is driven by a guiding flame through darkness. He seeks to bring life to a desolate world and alleviate suffering, a task he’s destined to bear indefinitely. The arrival of a messenger from a place of strife brings ominous, blood-red tidings that evoke a sense of dread and longing for escape. Despite this, the imperative that the flame must continue to burn and lead remains paramount, symbolizing persistence and guidance amidst despair.

A visceral image of suffering courses through Succubus, accompanied by a sense of fleeting time and the dullness of grey rain. Under the cover of night, the speaker undergoes a transformation, likening themselves to an insect residing within, symbolizing perhaps an inner darkness or change. The presence of death is palpable as it’s carried on the wind, felt even as the significant other breathes close by. This sombre realization culminates in the acceptance that it’s too late for any attempts at change or redemption.

Evoking the spirit of Tears For Fears, the introspective Carson of Venus nostalgically recalls youthful innocence and deep connections, evoking memories of joyous moments and dreams. As time passes, these memories turn bittersweet, overshadowed by loss and longing. The speaker yearns for a return to those carefree days, haunted by the absence of a significant other, especially in the solitude of night.

The pace picks up with Letting Go, with themes of intense desire and inevitable connection reminiscent of Human League and Blancmange. The song suggests an odyssey of self-reliance and independence, yet acknowledges an irresistible, soul-deep attraction that draws the two individuals together. This force is portrayed as unyielding, signifying a predestined bond that cannot be denied.

He Died explores the final moments of a person’s life, meeting death calmly and without fear. The lyrics question his place in the grand scheme of things, pondering the challenges he faces and the significance of his existence. Hope remains his companion, even as he clings to his determination, aware that time continues to move inexorably forward. The song captures a poignant moment where he reassures himself that he will be fine, recognizing this as a final untruth in the face of mortality.

The album closes with Mythic Dawn, expressing longing and existential contemplation, juxtaposing distant connections with personal entrapment in unresolved stories. It reflects on life’s endless cycle and emotional turmoil, oscillating between bitterness and sweetness, emphasizing the value of inner emotions and deep, spiritual connections.

Die Deutschrocker START75 veröffentlichen am 1.12.2023 ihr Debütalbum auf Retter des Rock Records. Songwriter und Musiker Thorsten Voigt aus Köln ist seit 1997 als Gitarrist und Bassist in verschiedenen Bands aktiv (u.a. DER DICKE POLIZIST). Er beschloss noch vor der Pandemie, sein eigenes Ding zu machen und seine musikalischen Vorstellungen, seine Gedanken, Lebenssituationen, Ansichten und Gefühle in zig Homerecording-Sessions festzuhalten.

Neu gibt es nun das Video zur dritten Single “Der Mann im roten Shirt”. Die Single beschreibt eine Zeitreise in die 90iger – das Jahrzehnt als Thorsten und seine Freund*innen die Großstadt erkundet hatten und die Leichtigkeit der jungen Jahre verspürten. „Auch heute gibt es diese Unbeschwertheit, wo es uns bedingungslos gut geht und wir uns einfach gehen lassen, um den Moment zu genießen.“

Vorher gab es bereits Videos zu den Songs “Musik” sowie “Jetzt“. Die teilanimierten Videos wurden vom Künstler Sven Int-Veen produziert. Die Zeichnungen stammen von ihm und von der Künstlerin Nmarthalie.

Die Rock-Band MOON SHOT präsentiert ihren neuen Song “Shadow Boxer” als Clip bei YouTube.

Wie das vorherige Musikvideo “Yes!” ist das Stück ein Vorgeschmack auf das kommende, noch unbetitelte Zweitwerk, das via Reaper Entertainment erscheinen wird.

Die Pop Punk-Band SHORT STACK hat eine neue Single hochgeladen: “IDGAF” gibt es bei allen gängigen Streaming-Portalen auf Abruf.

Erst im Juni teilte die Gruppe den Song “Shotgun Wedding” via YouTube als Visualizer-Clip. Sänger Shaun Diviney erläutert:

“Wir wollten einen wirklich spaßigen 90er-Jahre-Pop-Punk-Song schreiben, der von den Bands beeinflusst ist, mit denen wir aufgewachsen sind: mit BLINK-182, NOFX, GOOD CHARLOTTE-Vibes. Wir wollten wirklich, dass er schnell und energiegeladen ist, ich liebe Bradies Schlagzeug, das den ganzen Song antreibt.”

SAXON haben ihr neues, bereits 24. Studioalbum angekündigt. “Hell, Fire And Damnation” kommt am 19.01.2024 über Silver Lining Music. Produziert wurde das Album von Andy Sneap (u.a. JUDAS PRIEST, ACCEPT, EXODUS) und BIFF BYFORD. Die Vocals wurden im Studio von Biff und seinem Sohn Seb Byford aufgenommen. Beide haben gemeinsam auch das Projekt HEAVY WATER.

SAXON präsentieren Titelsong vom neuen Album “Hell, Fire And Damnation”
Zum Titeltrack gibt es nun ein Video, das Intro “The Prophecy” spricht der berühmte englische Schauspieler Brian Blessed. Zur Single sagt Frontman Biff: “Es gibt viel Musik über die Hölle, den Teufel und das Okkulte. Ich wollte einfach über den Kampf eines jeden zwischen dem Guten und dem Bösen schreiben. Du kannst nicht über den Teufel singen ohne auf die gute Person auf der anderen Seite einzugehen und dieser Song sagt dir einfach ‚triff deine Wahl‘. Wir alle müssen unsere Entscheidung treffen, ob wir gut oder böse sind. Der Song handelt von dem inneren Kampf.”

Auch der Albumtitel hat seine Geschichte: “Als ich ein kleiner Junge war, hat mein Vater das immer gesagt hat, wenn er wütend war:  ‘Hell, fire, and damnation, what’s tha’ been doing now?!’. Immer dann, wenn ich irgendeinen Mist gebaut habe, wie zum Beispiel Motive in den Küchentisch geschnitzt habe. Der Spruch war sehr ‘Yorkshire’ in diesen Tagen.”

C<a href="https://www.instagram.com/sheiscaress/">aress</a> is the solo darkwave electronic project from Tara Jane. Today, she has released her full-length debut album Night Call, featuring the bewitching titular lead single. Inspired by dreamy vintage 4AD bands as well as more contemporary dark pop artists such as TR/ST and Kontravoid, Jane fronts LA shoegazers Blood Candy. With Caress, she ventures into uncharted dark synth-driven dreamscapes.

Caress’s music is a mesmerizing fusion that engages both the senses and the soul. Her songs blend hypnotic drum beats with sparkling analogue synths, creating a rhythmic and nostalgic ambiance. This is enriched by reverb-soaked guitar melodies, crafting an atmospheric soundscape that perfectly complements her haunting vocals. The emotions in her lyrics, exploring desire, lust, and pain, resonate deeply, painting vivid narratives that are both universal and intimately personal.

Gaining attention during the pandemic, her solo work, notably a reinvented cover of Patti Smith’s Dancing Barefoot, showcases her unique ability to reinterpret classics with a modern flair.

The lyrics of the lead single Night Call convey a sense of intense and passionate connection. These shared moments are rare and deeply cherished, making the idea of ending them feel almost criminal. And yet, there is a recurring pattern in their relationship. It might imply a sense of inevitability or fate in their meetings, which occur under the cover of night…hinting at secrecy, forbidden desires, or a world set apart from their daytime personas. This is followed by Stranger, detailing a fascination with someone mysterious and dangerous. Next comes Our Afterlife, a number about longing for comfort and closeness, yet expressing desire for escapism and connection. The fleeting nature of the moment is acknowledged, hinting at a belief that the future and afterlife are intertwined.

Themes of fleeting romance and the desire to prolong a brief, intense connection come through in Temporary Lover, emphasizing the transient nature of their love but asserting its lasting impact. Dream Girl depicts a surreal encounter with a woman who exists between extremes of heaven and hell. Her voice, distant and elusive, fades as reality sets in upon waking.

Mortal Flaw draws us into a deep immersion in intense emotions, urging us to take these feelings to their extreme.  This destructive love is described as both tender and obsessive, suggesting a complex interplay of passion and self-destruction, culminating in a final, overwhelming takeover.

The lyrics to Unchained convey a theme of intense and possibly destructive passion. The speaker challenges someone to engage with them, not as a vulnerable or lost individual, but as an equal in a potentially harmful relationship…one with a willingness to endure and possibly embrace emotional or physical pain in the pursuit of love. Finally, we close out the album with the melancholy Dark Age, detailing the mysterious and tragic end of a woman, whose death is shrouded in uncertainty. There is a poetic contrast between the light in her eyes and the enveloping darkness, symbolizing her life being overshadowed and abruptly ended.

Night Call was written and produced by Caress and is out now on Negative Gain Productions.

“For the production, I used a variety of synths, mainly my vintage 80’s Korg Poly-800 and Casio CZ-101, which created this cohesive sound.” Tara Jane explains. “I wrote and recorded all of the songs in my old apartment called The Dungeon, where I had only one barred window in this little loft in Echo Park with these crazy high ceilings and my home studio was built underneath the loft bed where I tracked and recorded everything in this pretty confined space.”

With Night Call, she wanted to explore different themes of being drawn to the dark; each song on the album explores a unique subject of interest: heartbroken love spells, cold city nights, obsession, destruction, vampires, her relationship with herself, and experiences as a queer woman.

“I’ve always been drawn to darkness in multiple forms if it’s humor, aesthetic, interests and the album so reflection of that, so I wanted the compositions to be energetic, dark and tender but wrapped in this like cloak of mystery and sensuality which really resonates with my personality and the whole essence of Caress.”

+ + + : Time is going fast but Alien Vampires haven’t lost their power and nose for provocation. Just take a look at the front cover of the album and you’ll immediately seize what this band is made of. But Alien Vampires are much more than an image, it’s a band with a great sound. There’s no true innovation but a perfect balance between elements of Dark-Electro, EBM, Techno-Trance, Industrial and even Dark-Pop. All ingredients have been shaken by powerful rhythms to produce dancefloor killers. The first disc sounds great but the second one moves a step further revealing a band at full speed and driven by adrenaline. Nothing sounds impossible for Alien Vampires and everything they touched turns into sonic gold. It’s hard to give a favorite track as there are multiple smashers featured.

– – – : The single cut that couldn’t convince me is the chaotic-sounding cover version of “Assimilate”. This could be cool to play live but poorly inspired on this album. I think there’s no reason to complain about this single cut as this album is probably the best one the ‘vampires’ have ever released.
