In the labyrinthine corridors of the mind, where artistry and dread intertwine, Australian musician Simon Parker (Midnight Juggernauts, New Buffalo) found himself ensnared in a profound contemplation of mortality. This introspection, sparked during a conversation about the stark finality of heart attacks, kindled a creative fervour within him. As the prospect of sudden death loomed like an unbidden tempest, Parker grappled with the fragility of existence. This lurking dread, a silent sentinel, whispered of life’s impermanence, urging him to seek solace in the ephemeral beauty of our fleeting moments and express them in music via Blood Circle.

The culmination of this philosophical sojourn is his latest musical offering, CRIMSON. This eerie track is a bold, genre-defying opus, a triumphant defiance against the spectres of fear. It presents a palette of auditory experiences as diverse and delightful to the senses as the multitudes offered in a candy shop.

“After spending many years as a professional drummer I slowly lost the passion for touring and was no longer happy with taking a back seat to songwriting,” Parker admits. “I decided to take a break to start creating my own music, and so Blood Circle was born.”

CRIMSON, which features the incredible vocals of Melbourne’s Long Hours, echoes the avant-garde electronica of Aphex Twin melded with the atmospheric soundscapes of My Bloody Valentine. Into this surreal gathering, Soulwax makes an unanticipated entrance, infusing the ambiance with their distinctive flair. This auditory collage is further enriched with the otherworldly synth melodies reminiscent of John Carpenter, interspersed with the quirky, rhythmic nuances of NEU. The intensity of The Sisters of Mercy, albeit with a (non) goth twist, converges with the subtle, unexpected whispers of Men Without Hats.

In CRIMSON, Blood Circle crafts a thrilling expedition through a musical terrain both heart-stopping and demon-exorcising. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, sans the traditional constraints of theme park rides, offering a soundtrack that elevates the experience beyond the mundane, a journey with no prerequisites other than the willingness to be swept away by the rhythm.

The DIY video features vintage stock footage interspersed with performance, making it a visual treat as well.

Das ROCKHARZ OPEN AIR geht in eine neue Runde: Stattfinden wird die kommende Auflage des Festivals vom 3. bis 6. Juli 2023 in Ballenstedt.

Mittlerweile ist das Festival bereits ausverkauft. Für den Vorverkauf hatten die Veranstalter ursprünglich einen 14-tägigen Zeitraum für Frühbucher:innen einberaumt, wobei die ersten sieben Tage ausschließlich für Bestandskunden des festivaleigenen Shops reserviert waren.

Jetzt steht ein weiterer Headliner fest: JUDAS PRIEST spielen 2024 auf dem ROCKHARZ-Festival. Mit einer dritten Bandwelle enthüllt das ROCKHARZ-Team nun einen weiteren Headliner: BRUCE DICKINSON wird sein neues Album “The Mandrake Project” live vorstellen – es wird die einzige Festival-Show des IRON MAIDEN-Frontmanns auf deutschem Boden sein. Ebenfalls neu im Line-up sind AMARANTHE, CALLEJON, BENEDICTION sowie KANONENFIEBER.

Zuvor haben die Organisatoren vor dem Start des freien Vorverkaufs (ab 17. Juli 2023, 17:00 Uhr) drei weitere Acts enthüllt: 2024 mit dabei sind AMORPHIS, OOMPH! sowie THE HALO EFFECT.

Anfang kommenden Jahres veröffentlichen LUCIFER ein neues Album: “V”, so der Titel, erscheint am 26. Januar 2024 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Mit einem Clip zu “Slow Dance In A Crypt” hat die Band um Sängerin Johanna Platow Andersson jetzt eine weitere Single daraus geteilt.

Schon im Mai stellten LUCIFER den Track “A Coffin Has No Silver Lining (The Sistine Version)” vor, im Oktober folgte ein Video zu ‘At The Mortuary’.

Viel zu schade für die Resterampe: Landeten B-Seiten als Überschuss früher vorwiegend im Bonusteil diverser Maxi-Singles, Sondereditionen oder gar in der Tonne, erfährt zunächst aussortiertes Material im Streaming-Zeitalter eine völlig neue Wertschätzung. Gerade der digitale Vertriebsweg spielt den Bands – wenngleich nicht finanziell, so zumindest marketingtechnisch – in die Hände, um im Gespräch zu bleiben. Keine vier Monate nach dem konstant starken „Descent“ (2023) überraschen ORBIT CULTURE daher mit einem nicht minder deftigen Nachschlag.

Konsequenterweise steht „The Forgotten“ seinem direkten Vorgänger qualitativ in keiner Weise nach, sondern vereint haargenau dieselben Stärken des Hitalbums im Kurzformat. Der groovende Mix aus melodischem Death Metal und Thrash-Spitzen drängt ebenso massiv nach vorne, ohne dabei ins Eindimensionale abzudriften. Dabei sorgt die mächtige Produktion für die nötige Durchschlagskraft, während das Rhythmusfundament die ideale Mischung aus Eingängigkeit und energischem Drive zusammenrührt. Zu spüren ist das im hämmernden Opener „While We Serve“ genauso wie in „The Upheaval“, wo Gitarrist und Sänger Niklas Karlsson die donnernden Death-Growls zeitweise gegen etwas Hetfield-Timbre (METALLICA) eintauscht.

Dem unnachgiebigen Grundcharakter des Materials setzen ORBIT CULTURE in dezenter Weise atmosphärische Synthesizer sowie ruhige, teils unheilschwangere Passagen entgegen, um die Spannung selbst in den umfassenderen Kompositionen aufrechtzuerhalten. Dass im achtminütigen „Sound of The Bell“ darüber hinaus noch einige klar gesungene Zeilen hinzukommen, macht den Querschnitt schließlich perfekt. Alle Trademarks vereint in einem Mikrokosmos: „The Forgotten“ funktioniert als unerwartete Zugabe genauso wie als Einstiegsdroge in den oft mitreißenden Sound der Skandinavier, denen das Konzept der Resterampe dieser Tage vollkommen zu Recht fremd erscheint.

Glasgow-based synth project Soft Riot is a delightful oddity that, thankfully, defies easy categorization. This long running retro-tinged, multidisciplinary, and undeniably imaginative endeavour recently graced us with a quirky and surreal tenth studio album, “No,” back in August. Among the collection of songs, a particular gem shines bright — It Never Takes Long to Say No, a track that waltzes through the cosmos of synth melodies, taking a detour into the land of experimental rhythms.

Imagine, if you will, a sonic collage, one where the influences of Skinny Puppy, Psyche, and Martin Dupont are not merely blended but alchemized into something akin to art-pop gold. Here, the haunting vocals of Canadian expat Jack Duckworth float effortlessly over a carefully orchestrated mélange of synth and percussion, striking a balance between the dynamic and the intriguing.

It Never Takes Long to Say No depicts a struggle against overwhelming nonsense and illogical situations. Despite constant effort, one may feel their energy unreciprocated, leading to a trap of poor decisions and counterattacks. This dark, repetitive reality is likened to a mythomaniac’s tale, suggesting the futility in expecting different results from the same actions. The song emphasizes the ease and importance of saying no to such draining, cyclical negativity.

In a shift from his previous, more elaborate visual endeavours, Duckworth embraced a different trajectory for his latest video project. This time around, he found himself walking a tightrope between spontaneity and meticulous craftsmanship, all under the watchful eye of a looming deadline. This balancing act, challenging yet invigourating, allowed him to harness the fleeting momentum, ensuring that the creative spark remained alight. The urgency of the timeline honed his artistic focus.

“…Coming to this new video, I wanted to do something that was more impulsive and instinctual that could be assembled at a rate closer to the speed of what my mind was thinking,” he explains. “I was looking for something that could act more as visual or texture and work with the energy in any augmented physical space it would be watched in — abstract and stylised but without being too anonymous. I shot all of the footage in record time. Then, from there just started hacking it up, mulching it and rendering it through my own visual filter which is by far the process I’m most interested in — and the most fun. And doing all that I still retain an attentive eye so the details were being covered so in the end it looks convincing, at least to me.”

Das FULL FORCE findet im kommenden Jahr vom 21. bis 23. Juni 2024 in Ferropolis (zwischen Leipzig und Berlin) statt.

Der Kartenvorverkauf für das dreitägige Open Air auf full-force.de hat bereits begonnen, Tickets gibt es ab rund 170,- Euro, für Camping und Parken müssen Extra-Tickets gekauft werden.

Audioglobe played and still plays a significant role in distributing niche genres, including goth, electro, and darkwave. By providing a platform for these genres and offering a worldwide distribution, they have helped keeping this scene, its labels and bands staying afloat whereas other distributors came and disappeared.

Audioglobe also plays a significant at Side-Line as the distributor is one of our must trusted sources to find out about new upcoming releases.

Before Audioglobe there was Contempo Records

Before starting Audioglobe, four of its five founders worked at Contempo Records, a famous music store in Florence, Italy, since the early 80s. Contempo was also a leading independent label and distributor in Italy from the mid/late 80s. They had contracts with artists like Clock DVA, Lassigue Bendthaus, Pankow, and others, and released albums by bands like Suicide and The Rose of Avalanche. They also distributed many albums for 4AD, featuring artists like Clan of Xymox and Dead Can Dance.

Two more ex-Contempo employees joined in 1994, just as Contempo closed down.

Audioglobe experienced 14 incredible years from 1993 to 2007, faced some tough times, and since 2020, “things have been great again!” So Sebastian Koch confirms in a mail sent out this morning.

Mit “Zeppelin” wird in einigen Tagen das neue Album der NWOBHM-Band STUKA SQUADRON erscheinen. Es ist nach “Tales of the Ost” (2011) das zweite Album der Engländer aus London.

“Zeppelin” wird am 15. Dezember 2023 via Metal on Metal Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es mit “Angel of Mons” ein Lyric-Video.

Following their successful fall 2023 tour supporting their long-awaited fifth studio album,  “Everything Is Alive,” British shoegaze heroes Slowdive are poised to continue captivating their devoted fanbase with a new set of tour dates in 2024. The album, released on September 1, 2023, has been a commercial triumph and critical darling, securing top ten spots in several European countries, including Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Notable singles from the album, such as “Kisses,” “Skin in the Game,” “The Slab,” and “Alife,” have further cemented Slowdive’s reputation for creating deeply textured and emotionally engaging music.

The spring 2024 tour will see Slowdive returning to the US, building on the momentum of their fall 2023 tour. This time, they’re set to headline the Sick New World festival and perform in several cities missed in their previous run. Anticipation is high for shows in Texas (Austin, Houston, Dallas), the Southwest (Phoenix, Albuquerque), New Orleans, Kansas City, Atlanta, and the unique subterranean venue, The Caverns, in Tennessee.

Enhancing the tour’s allure is the inclusion of Drab Majesty as the opening act. Known for their distinct post-punk and goth-infused sound, Drab Majesty gained recent acclaim with their EP “An Object in Motion.” The EP’s lead single, “Vanity,” featuring Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, has been particularly well-received, offering a rare blend of Goswell’s ethereal vocals with Drab Majesty’s darker tones.

Movment are a post punk band from Ireland born out of the ashes of Raw Novembre which released 3 albums and some singles and EPs. As Movment they have so far released 2 albums, “Broken Down” and “Transformation”, and 1 EP, “Red Death Sessions”. Out now is the brand new, 3rd, album, “Reinvention”.

The new album “Reinvention” explores life says the band: “We are all on a journey. It will end. We live inside our heads. We will soon cease to be as we are. From it there is no escape. The sparkle disappears. Would we just wait for it to happen? Understand it, desire it. Go by what you feel. Become what you can be. Believe in being able to move on. Reinvent you. They still believe.”

Belgium’s electro act Llumen returns with a 9-track EP bridging the previous “Polygon Heart” album and the forthcoming album “The Breaking Waves” announced for Spring 2024 on Alfa Matrix.

“Die Stille Totgeschwiegen” is the first Llumen song mixing English and German lyrics, and is the first new song revealed from the forthcoming album “The Breaking Waves”. The track got remixed by Grendel, Elektrostaub and First Aid 4 Souls. Included as well are remixed versions of “Like My Pain” by Aiboforcen, Pre:Emptive Strike 0.1, Ah Cama-Sotz and Promenade Cinema.

Die Melodic Death Metal-Band BEYOND THE HATE hat mit Lyric-Video zu “The Lighthouse” ein Lyric-Video mit “Alone I Die” einen Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Darkest Times” veröffentlicht. Lange Zeit war es ruhig um die Band von Mastermind Torsten ‚Rosendorn‘ Schneyer, seines Zeichens Musiker, Künstler, Autor, historischer Fechter usw.. 2010 erschien mit „Der Zeit abhanden“ die letzte VÖ. Das nun vorliegende, neue Werk sollte bereits 2013 erscheinen und wurde mit Ausschnitten damals schon auf der Homepage präsentiert. Nun, zehn Jahre später, ist es vollbracht: „Strafgericht – Zehn letzte Todsünden“ erblickt als Konzeptalbum das Licht der Öffentlichkeit.

Der düstere Opener „Anklage“ lüftet dann das Geheimnis, wer auf der Anklagebank in diesen fiktiven, philosophisch geführten Strafprozess platz nehmen muss und welche letzten Todsünden ihm vorgeworfen werden. Mit „Glauben heißt nicht wissen“ kommen wir zum ersten Anklagepunkt. Es geht um die Scharlatanerie von Astrologen, Wunderheilern und Päpsten, die auch heute noch den Glauben an Wunder und höhere Wesen wider besseres Wissens ausnutzen. Die opulente Ausstaffierung der Musik wird mal mit Liebreiz dargeboten, mal werden Saiten und Schlagwerk zum bedrohlichen Gewittergrollen mit reichlich Tempo. Gesanglich gibt es neben Torstens Mischung aus wildem kinskiesken Sprachgesang und an Oswald Henke erinnernden Klagegesang sowie feine Gesangseinlagen, welche mit Sopranstimme dargeboten werden. Die Beliebigkeit wird folgend verhandelt. Profillosigkeit, fehlendes Rückgrat und das sich verbiegen lassen, alles kommt auf dem Tisch. „Dummheit ist (un)heilbar“ beschäftigt sich natürlich mit der mangelhaften Fähigkeit, aus Wahrnehmungen angemessene Schlüsse zu ziehen beziehungsweise zu lernen. Das umklammerte ‚un‘ und der letzte Satz im Text lassen diesmal aber auch einen leichten Hoffnungsschimmer scheinen. Musikalisch geht es ein wenig in Richtung MA-Folk und lässt neben druckvollen Passagen auch mal ruhige Momente zu, welche dann als perfekte, latent verträumte Untermalung der Erzählung dienen. Gelungen auch die, wahlweise als Duett, wahlweise als Duell erklingende Verschmelzung der unterschiedlichen Stimmbandakrobatiken.

Eine fast schunkelnde Einleitung mit Akkordeon führt uns zum Anklagepunkt 4 (der Selbstgerechtigkeit). Zwischendrin dann wieder dieser ungeordnet scheinende Wall of Sound. Textlich gibt es Anspielungen ans Sandmännchen oder leicht abgewandelt an Schillers „an die Freude“. Das Los der Feigheit beginnt mit und beherbergt teilweise kalttanzbare Erinnerungen an die EBM der 80er. Dazwischen reduzierte Instrumentierung mit klarem Blick auf den kristallinen, weiblichen Gesang und natürlich lädt auch der Torsten mit seiner wilden rauen Stimme zum Duett ein. Ein progressives Saitensolo vervollständigt den Song. Als nächstes setzt man sich mit Ignoranz auseinander. Wie der Titel („Meer aus Ignoranz“) und auch das Möwengeschrei erkennen lässt, gibt es allerlei maritime Anspielungen. Musikalisch ist es erneut ein wildes Intermezzo aus Saiten, Violine, Kontrabass, Elektronik und irgendwann spielt Hein so schön auf dem Schifferklavier. Nach der Unästhetik („der Unästhetik hübsch‘ Gesicht“), wo die Exegese ein wenig schwerfällt, da man Selbstbewusstsein, Selbstzweifel oder Selbstironie erkennen könnte, beschäftigt man sich in „Miss Achtung“ mit dem nächsten Vorwurf. Balladesk und mit eingängigen Klavierpassagen versehen, ist die Instrumentierung für Adversus-Verhältnisse sehr dezent. Ein ruhiges, schönes Kleinod, dessen tragische Gestalt sich langsam entblättert. Dann wird es wieder roh, wild und ungezügelt, samt psychopathischen Gesängen. Auch die Engherzigkeit („dein enges Herz“) kann sich der Anklage nicht entziehen und wird mit reichlich Tempo und bedrohlicher Inszenierung dem Richter zum Fraß vorgeworfen, Herztöne liefern latente Ruhepole, bevor auch diese dem Treiben mit tachykarden Vorhofflimmern huldigen und nach einen Schrittmacher lechzen und doch zum Ende nur die Nulllinie erreichen. Als letztes wird die Stagnation („Stagnation heißt Tod“) vor den Richter geführt. Musikalisch regieren hier dann wieder betörende Tonkünste mit orchestralen Klangstrukturen die Szenerie, das Ganze von Traurigkeit und phobischer Schwermut getragen. Ein wunderschöner, mit reichlich schwarzer Galle gefülltes Ende der Anklage.

Zum Schluss wird dann das Urteil gesprochen, welches durchaus überraschend ausfällt (mehr wird hier nicht verraten).

 

Fazit: Die Neubauten prägten einmal den Satz: „Hör mit Schmerzen“. Ich würde hier das auditive Erlebnis als „Hör mit Stress“ bezeichnen. Bereits textlich ist es keine gemütliche Reise durch die Irrungen und Wirrungen des Menschen (bzw. der Menschheit). Die in ihrer Variabilität und Opulenz einzigartig dargebotene musikalische Komponente ist ein Stilmix verschiedenster düsterer Klänge (NDT, NDH, Dark Wave, Dark Metal), welche mit (Neo-)Klassik, Musical und Oper zu verschmelzen scheinen. Meist gibt es diesen Stilmix innerhalb eines Songs, auch die Ambivalenz zwischen laut/leise, schnell/langsam, betörend/schneidend oder romantisch/grobschlächtig ist den Stücken immanent. Wenn man sich der lyrischen Form der Texte widmet, ist es eine Melange aus nietzscheanischen Aphorismen, Weimarer Klassik, Kurzgedichten, Sprichwörtern, Prosa, Poesie, Essais, Phrasen, Kinderreimen oder Limerick. Die detaillierte und liebevolle Zusammenfügung der einzelnen Teile zum großen Ganzen, welches tiefgründig und voller anekdotischer Eleganz dem Realismus einen Spiegel vorhält, ist des Hörers Grundgerüst zur Reflexion. Die CD erscheint im DVD Digipack mit einem 20seitigen Booklet samt Erklärungen und sämtlichen Texten und soll auf 250 (!) Stück limitiert sein.

Background/Info: This work released in 2022 by the Bulgarian label Corvus is a split album between Егзорцизам (Exorcism) and Катакомбная Церковь (Catacomb Church). Each project released one single, extended, track.

Content: Exorcism takes off with an elaborated and diversified piece of Dark-Ambient driven cut. The final part of the track evolves into a more Ritual style. Catacomb Church deals with a different genre, creating a kind of ambient-Noise piece of music dominated by boiling sound waves.

+ + + : I especially like the track by Exorcism for its sophisticated and elaborated writing. But I also enjoy the way this cut is evolving featuring different sound layers and even fragmented vocal effects.

– – – : The track by Catacomb Church sounds like an antithesis to Exorcism but in the end it’s all about personal taste.

Conclusion: This is an interesting split album revealing a great obscure Ambient piece by Exorcism.

Best songs: “Узалудне молитве” by Exorcism.

LORD OF THE LOST legen ihren Fans ein Album mit Coversongs unter den Weihnachtsbaum: “Weapons Of Mass Seduction” erscheint am 29. Dezember 2023 über Napalm Records.Reinhören kann man nun auch in LORD OF THE LOSTs Version von “(I Just) Died In Your Arms) auf den Streamingplattformen. 

Im Original ist der Song von CUTTING CREW. LORD OF THE LOST veröffentlichen den Track als Duett mit Singer-Songwriterin Anica Russo, die neben LORD OF THE LOST am deutschen Vorentscheid zum Eurovision Song Contest 2023 teilnahm.

Einen weiteren Preview-Track gibt es seit November: Zum ROXETTE-Cover “The Look” hat die Gruppe ein Musikvideo bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Darauf ist außerdem Pop-Sängerin Blümchen als Gast zu hören. Ursprünglich war das Stück bereits auf dem Studioalbum “Blood & Glitter” (2022) zu finden.

Mit einem Musikvideo zu „Shock To The System” stellten LORD OF THE LOST zuvor den ersten Song daraus vor, im Original ist der Song von BILLY IDOL.

LORD OF THE LOST-Sänger Chris Harmserklärt, was ihn an der BILLY IDOL-Nummer fasziniert:

„Ich erinnere mich noch genau, als ich diesen Song das erste Mal hörte. Ich war 13 Jahre alt, es war Sommer und ich saß auf der Rückbank des Opel Manta Cabrios, in dem ich mit meiner älteren Schwester und ihrem Freund zum Freibad fuhr. Selten hat mich die Energie eines einzelnen Songs so gepackt. Ein kleines Stück dieser Energie möchten wir gern mit unserem Tribut an Billy Idol und diesen Song durch unser Cover und das dazugehörige Video zurückgeben.“

Die Idee, ein Coveralbum aufznehmen, kam bereits beim dem letzten Album “Blood & Glitter” auf:

„Bereits während der Produktion von unserem letzten Album Blood & Glitter wurde während der Studiozeit in Finnland, bei den Aufnahmen zu unserem ROXETTE-Cover ‚The Look‘, klar, dass wir hier die Büchse der Pandora geöffnet hatten. Die Energie und der Spaß am Covern von Songs geliebter und respektierter Kollegen und Vorbilder war etwas, dass wir unbedingt weiterführen wollten. So haben wir noch vor der Veröffentlichung von Blood & Glitter angefangen, an dem Projekt ‚Cover-Album‘ zu arbeiten, was für uns das perfekte Dessert zu Blood & Glitter darstellt, bevor wir uns in das Abenteuer stürzen, uns für ein eigenes neues Album erneut selbst zu erfinden.”

Today we received a mail from Hypervuur, a Bogota, Colombia-based horror industrial act mixing 1990’s rave, horror movies and – as the promo pictures show – hockey fights. We don’t normally do complete profiles, but here we’ll make an exception.

What started as something to survive 2020’s quarantine, has taken a life of its own with 6 albums, a DJ live act, and an upcoming video and seventh album, “so people don’t face their fears, they dance to them.”

The albums “Fearless” (1995) and “Nocturnes” (1997) by the ambient group Solitaire are now digitally available for the first time. Following the passing of Elmar Schulte, a founding member of Solitaire, in late 2022, Projekt collaborates with his widow and Ruediger Gleisberg to release the full catalog digitally on a pay-what-you-want basis on Bandcamp. The two albums come in one single download.

These mid-90s albums by Elmar and Ruediger showcase a blend of progressive electronics. Notably, parts of three tracks from “Fearless” were featured in the 1998 vampire movie “Blade,” starring Wesley Snipes. The inclusion of electric guitar, unique samples, and a dynamic groove in “One Small Step…” drew the attention of director Stephen Norrington, leading to the incorporation of Solitaire’s music in the film.

Background on Solitaire

Solitaire was established in 1989 by Elmar Schulte and Ruediger Gleisberg in Paderborn, Germany. The duo initially met in a music store and soon started working on music together in an old apartment. Their first album, “Altered States,” was released in 1990 on Musique Intemporelle, a label based in Berlin. Shortly after the Berlin Wall fell, on November 11th, 1989, Solitaire performed their first concert in Berlin to a full church.

Despite initial doubts about its appeal, the album achieved success, with three tracks featuring in “Blade” as mentioned. “Nocturnes” followed a similar production style and was released on Arya, an offshoot of Italy’s Amplexus label. Both albums featured guest musician Amir Baghiri, who later gained recognition in the ambient music scene.

After Elmar Schulte’s death in 2022, Ruediger, in collaboration with Elmar’s widow, remastered and reissued their final two albums.

Die Melodic Metal-Band MIST DESCENDS hat mit “Hexagon” eine neue Single veröffentlicht. Der Song, der von Samuli Vuori gemixt und gemastert wurde, wird Teil einer neuen EP der Finnen sein.

“Die Single reflektiert über die Geheimnisse unseres Universums”, eröffnet die Band. “Wir wurden davon inspiriert, wie die Form des Hexagons überall um uns herum erscheint. Wenn man sich die Bilder des Saturn anschaut, sieht man ein beständiges sechseckiges Wolkenmuster, das größer als der Durchmesser der Erde ist. Auch überall in der Natur, in Bienenwaben, Schildkrötenpanzern usw. ist die Form des Sechsecks zu sehen.”

The Culture and Education Committee of the European Parliament recently voted on a report titled ‘Cultural Diversity and the Conditions for Authors in the European Streaming Market‘. This vote led to a proposal for new legislation aimed at reforming music streaming within the EU. The report, adopted with 23 votes for, three against, and one abstention, seeks to address several key issues in the music streaming sector.

The European Parliament’s initiative comes amidst growing concerns over the distribution of revenues in the music streaming market, which is dominated by a few major labels and popular artists. The proposed legislation aims to create a fair and sustainable environment for music streaming and to promote cultural diversity.

These are the key aspects of the proposed legislation:

Transparency of Algorithms: The bill calls for streaming services to make their algorithms and recommendation tools transparent. This is to ensure that European works are visible and accessible to users.

Diversity Indicator: The proposal includes the creation of a “diversity indicator” to analyze the variety of genres, languages, and the presence of independent authors on streaming platforms. This aims to promote a wider range of music and cultural diversity.

Rights Identification: The bill would require streaming services to correctly identify right-holders through proper allocation of metadata, facilitating the discovery of their works. This measure also seeks to prevent practices like streaming fraud, which undermines the value of music content.

Labeling of AI-Generated Content: A provision in the bill calls for clear labeling of AI-generated tracks, allowing listeners to distinguish between human-produced music and AI-generated songs.

Investment in European Music: The bill urges increased investment in European music, particularly in local, niche artists and artists from vulnerable communities. This is aimed at offering a more diverse repertoire and supporting authors in the digital transformation of their business models.

Lead MEP Ibán García Del Blanco commented on the importance of recognizing the role authors play in the music sector and the need to review and improve the revenue distribution model used by streaming services to promote cultural diversity. The Plenary vote on this non-legislative resolution is scheduled for the January 2024 Strasbourg session.

As for our scene, especially the 5th key issue addressed above (aimed at niche artists) will be rather interesting. Nevertheless, the changes to the Spotify royalty model which will have a huge impact on the industrial music scene, even if niche artists get more attention on streaming platforms. Its changes includes a controversial policy requiring tracks to get a minimum of 1,000 listens every year to receive royalties.

Die Melodic Rock-Band LAST IN TIME hat einen Labeldeal mit Rockshots Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird die Band rund um Massimo Marchetti ihr neues Album “Too Late” veröffentlichen. Es ist das erste Album der Italiener und wird am 12. Januar 2024 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach dem Lyric-Video zu “The Way To Rock” mit “Moonlight Dreamers” – mit Gast-Sängerin Caterina Minguzzi – eine zweite Single. In dem Lied geht es um zwei Menschen, die sich in einer Bar treffen. In Gedanken versunken, lernen sie sich kennen. Sie verbringen die Nacht miteinander, und am Ende, als sie aufwachen, fragen sie sich, ob sich mehr als nur ein Flirt entwickeln wird.

A few weeks ago we wrote an article on Greenwashing in the music industry. Some considered it to be nonsense but behold, there is something brewing in the music world with the launch of a Music Industry Climate Collective and a Music Climate Pact.

Music Industry Climate Collective

Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group have now formed the Music Industry Climate Collective (MICC) to address environmental challenges related to the global climate, particularly within the music industry. This collaboration aims to amplify environmental stewardship and provide tailored recommendations and strategies for music companies of all sizes.

One of MICC’s first initiatives is to offer comprehensive guidance for measuring scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, which are indirect emissions occurring in the music industry’s value chain, including product manufacturing, distribution, and licensing.

The MICC has worked with scientific experts to develop the first draft of this guidance, which will be available for industry participants to review. Additionally, the MICC has established an advisory council comprising independent record labels, value chain partners, and climate experts to gather broader industry input. The aim is to set a science-based standard, fostering climate resilience within the music sector. This initiative also aims to provide critical guidance to partner companies starting to measure their emissions and promote consistency in how music companies develop and disclose greenhouse gas inventories.

Music Climate Pact

Another initiative is the Music Climate Pact, which has as a vision “to harness the power of the music industry towards inspiring transformational action on the climate crisis.” By aligning as a sector, they stand to de-politicise sustainability and address their biggest environmental impacts in an efficient and collaborative way. “There is a lot of work to be done if we are to become a more sustainable industry, but we will be guided by climate science and take tangible, unified action and regularly update on our progress.”

The Pact’s founder signatories have committed to:

Take individual and collective action to measure and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions (scopes 1, 2 and 3)

By February 2022, have either signed the Science Based Targets standard commitment letter stating that we will commit to setting science-based targets or will have joined the Race to Zero programme

Work together as an industry to establish carbon measurement methodologies, tools and frameworks backed by climate science

Work in partnership with shared suppliers and digital streaming platforms (DSPs) to obtain data and drive emission reduction projects in a collaborative fashion

Support artists in speaking up on climate issues

Communicate openly with fans about the impacts of the music industry.

Businesses signing up after the launch must have already signed up to one of the two pathways.

Basically what is being presented by these two initiatives is a lot less than what we talked about in our initial article. So it remains to be seen if all this will be something else than just green windowdressing, after all Greenwashing is rampant with concert organisers for instance as we pointed out. And that is where the biggest money is these days for the traveling artists.

Nachdem AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE im Okober 2023 die Single “No Pain No Gain” veröffentlicht haben, kommt nun auch ein neues Album: Die vierte Platte des Projektes um Tim Lambesis (AS I LAY DYING) heißt “Quad Brutal” und erscheint am 23. Februar 2024.

Mit  “Don’t Be Lazy” haben AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE jetzt einen weiteren Song daraus im Netz geteilt.

Als Gastmusiker sind an “Quad Brutal” beteiligt: Dany Lambesis (HELLBØRN), die Bodybuilder Craig Golias und Rob Bailey, Ricky Hoover (OV SULFUR, ex-SUFFOKATE) sowie die Gitarristen Angel Vivaldi, Clayton King, Brandon Richter (BLEEDING THROUGH) und Joey Alarcon (WOLVES AT THE GATE, BORN THROUGH FIRE).

Tim Lambesis sagt über “Quad Brutal” folgendes:

“Es ist eine große Verantwortung, von Govournator  damit beauftragt zu werden, die Brutalität der 80er Jahre, Bodybuilding und den judgment day in einem Album zu vereinen. Es muss natürlich brutal klingen. Dann musste ich für gute Refrains sorgen, damit die Leute die Weisheit von Ahhnolds Worten nicht vergessen. Und da es das vierte Album ist, musste ich im Fitnessstudio wirklich meinen Quads (Musculus quadriceps, ein vierköpfiger Muskel des Oberschenkels) arbeiten, um das Gewicht der Welt wie auf dem Albumcover zu tragen, wenn es eines Tages an mich weitergereicht wird. Das Ergebnis ist ein Album, das viel abwechslungsreicher ist als jedes andere AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE-Album und mit Abstand das brutalste, wenn man alle 10 Songs hört.”

Before the release of the new “Back To Basic” full length album, Belgian electronic artist Franky Deblomme aka Cubic comes out with a second 4-track EP. Titled after the legendary Commodore C128, this EP is the obvious logical successor to the previous “c64” EP.

The new EP features exclusive club oriented and extended versions of “Art In” and “Human Computer”. While “MF2HD” is an exclusive non-album track, Cubic also offers a powerful EBM/industrial dance mix of “B C L” by label-mates Diffuzion.

Kraftwerk comes to mind but with a very refined contemporary sound. The EP is now residing in the Top 10 best selling downloads on Bandcamp in the industrial section. You can find it here on Bandcamp.
