The year was 1980, and a new wave band by the name of B-Movie emerged onto the music scene with their hit track “Nowhere Girl.” Comprising of four talented musicians hailing from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, the band members included Steve Hovington on vocals, Paul Statham on guitar, Rick Holliday on synth, and Graham Boffey on drums. Though they weren’t exactly The Beatles in terms of fame, they did leave an indelible smudge on the New Wave canvas, even joining many luminaries on the 1981 Some Bizzare Compilation. (Statham would later go on to play guitar with Peter Murphy, co-writing several of Murphy’s solo albums and one of Dido’s hit singles).

Nowhere Girl, B-Movie’s claim to near-fame, sways with atmospheric synths and a catchy bass line – a perfect echo of the era’s existential ennui. The song, a bit gloomy yet undeniably catchy, wiggled its way into the hearts of alternative music enthusiasts in the early 80s. Fast forward to the present, and Nowhere Girl continues to reverberate through the echoes of time…and, fitting to their moniker, maintaining B-Movie’s cult status. It’s been remixed and reimagined more times than one can count.

Enter The Slashes, a ‘Border Goth trio with a penchant for post-punk.’ They’ve decided to take a whack at Nowhere Girl, infusing it with their own blend of zesty guitar, peppy drums, and vocals deep enough to make the Mariana Trench look like a culvert by the highway. In their hands, the song takes on a menacing, spookier new life, proving that even after four decades, Nowhere Girl can still be the coolest kid in the music block.

In 2015, The Slashes, featuring Esteban Rene on guitar and vocals, Beto Bautista on bass, and Carlos Robles on drums, debuted with a self-titled album. Produced by Alan Sanderson, known for working with The Rolling Stones and Elvis Costello, the album showcased their raw, adrenaline-fueled sound.

The Slashes’ debut album earned critical acclaim and a Best Rock nomination at the San Diego Music Awards. They’ve since rocked Southern California, playing at renowned venues like Santa Ana’s The Observatory, LA’s Rainbow Bar, and San Diego’s The Casbah.

Zum Song “While We Serve” hat die Gruppe hatte die Band zuvor bereits einen Visualizer-Clip bei YouTube hochgeladen.

“The Forgotten” enthält drei Tracks, ist seit 1. Dezember 2023 digital verfügbar und folgt auf das Studioalbum “Descent” (2023).

Im Frühjahr 2024 gehen die Schweden dann auf Europatour, um unter dem Motto “Descending Into Madness” das neue Material live vorzustellen. Geplant sind dabei auch Konzerte in Köln, Berlin, Hamburg, München, Zürich (CH), Wien (A) sowie Dresden (Termine s. unten).

Die Melodic Death / Power Metal-Band RYUJIN (ehemals GYZE) hat ihr neues, selbstbetiteltes Album “Ryujin” angekündigt. Als Vorgeschmack stellt die Gruppe nun auch “Gekokujo” als Clip bei YouTube vor.

Bereits im September teilten RYUJIN die erste Single “Raijin & Fujin”, im November folgte “The Rainbow Song” mit einem Video bei YouTube.

Als Gastmusiker sind auf “Ryujin” Cellist Mukai Wataru sowie Matthew K. Heafy (TRIVIUM, IBARAKI) zu hören.

Phenomena such as sleepwalking, night terrors, or the vivid enactment of dreams often result in a jarring awakening, tinged with elements of fear or mortification. This inherent unpredictability breeds an undercurrent of anxiety regarding sleep, further complicated by the looming risk of injury — a recurrent theme that perpetuates an ongoing cycle of nocturnal unrest and daytime tension.

Within the mysterious world of Swedish darkwave,” artist aux animaux releases a deeply evocative video that delves into one of the more unsettling facets of parasomnia: Sleep Paralysis. A lifetime of personal encounters with these sleep disorders has indelibly influenced the artist, sparking a creative urgency to explore and articulate the impact of these experiences through music.

The lyrics, unadorned yet poignant, navigate the harrowing experience of being ensnared in this terror-inducing cycle — a chilling portrayal of panic and helplessness, akin to an ensnared insect in the relentless grip of a spider’s web, defenseless against the dark figments conjured by the mind.

The self-directed video for the song beautifully showcases this paranoia with its disjointed, deeply disturbing visions, conjured straight out of the underbelly of the darkest recesses of the psyche. Nighty-nightmare!

Die Gothic Rock / Post-Punk-Band ARTIFICIAL HEAVEN hat einen Labeldeal bei My Kingdom Music unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Italiener aus Rom ihr neues Album “Digital Dreams” veröffentlichen. Das Debütalbum der 2021 gegründeten Band wurde von Giuseppe Orlando (THE FORESHADOWING, Ex-NOVEMBRE) in den The Outer Sound Studios produziert und soll am 12. Januar 2024 erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork – als Ausdruck der Auswirkungen des digitalen Zeitalters auf die heutige Gesellschaft – stammt von D’aria Cognigni. Mit dem Lyric-Video zu “Fall Away” ist nun die erste Vorab-Single erschienen.

Die Power Metal-Band DRAGONFORCE hat eine neue Standalone-Single samt Musikvideo veröffentlicht: “Power Of The Saber Blade” wurde für das VR-Videospiel “Beat Saber” geschrieben und ist Teil des offiziellen Soundtracks “OST 6”.

Zuvor teilte die Formation eine weitere Version von “Doomsday Party” inklusive Video:  “Doomsday Party ft. Elize Ryd, Amaranthe” – in der Albumversion teilte die Band bereits vor einigen Wochen “Doomsday Party” als Musikvideo bei YouTube. 

Als zweite Single erschien im Oktober “Power Of The Triforce” bei YouTube. Das Stück ist eine Hommage an die Videospiel-Reihe “The Legend Of Zelda”.

Beide Songs stammen vom neuen Album “Warp Speed Warriors”, das am 15. März 2024 über Napalm Records erscheint. Gitarrist Herman Li erklärt:

Wir freuen uns sehr, nach über 4 Jahren Wartezeit einen brandneuen DragonForce-Song zu veröffentlichen! Es war eine schwierige Entscheidung, welchen unserer neuen Tracks wir zuerst veröffentlichen sollten, aber wir haben uns für diesen entschieden, weil er eine andere Facette unserer Musik zeigt, aber trotzdem den unverwechselbaren DragonForce-Sound beibehält.

Die Dreharbeiten zu diesem Video waren ein Riesenspaß, und wir hatten die Gelegenheit, unsere Vision in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, zum Leben zu erwecken. Taraneh – which, fittingly, means “song” in Farsi – stands out as a unique thread. It’s the solo moniker of Persian-American artist Taraneh Azar, a multi-instrumentalist and producer. With her roots in Iran and her branches reaching out from the tree of the Big Apple, Taraneh’s music is a dark multi-genre extravaganza. It’s like she threw rock, pop, and a dash of world music into a blender and out came something you can’t help but nod your head to. Whether she’s strumming a guitar, tickling the ivories, or twisting the knobs in the studio, Taraneh is a one-woman musical army, marching to the beat of her own drum – sometimes literally.

Out via Infinite Fog on January 23rd is the re-release of the Nurse With Wound album “Thunder Perfect Mind” in two formats. This 2024 re-release was fully overseen by Steven Stapleton.

The first is a limited picture-disc edition (300 copies), on heavy 185g and coming inside a special remus-quality gatefold cover. ‘Remus’ is a special format, slightly bigger in size than regular vinyl sleeves as the cardboard is heavier and denser.

The second format is a 6-panel 2CD digipak with the same tracklist as the vinyl set.

A picture disc on vinyl is not an audiophile format

Please take notice that picture “vinyl” is no audiophile format, it’s a collectible format. The more stereo and bass, the wider and deeper the grooves have to be, to provide all information to the needle. But picture discs have only a very thin plastic foil over the pictures, it’s no ‘real’ vinyl, just plastic, similar to pet bottles. It is impossible, to press as deep and wide grooves, that a Picture-LP would sound as well as a real vinyl. That’s the same for all picture LPs, not only this one.

Here are the 5 aspects to keep in mind when buying picture discs:

Manufacturing Process: Picture discs are created by pressing a thin layer of vinyl over a paper image. This process differs from traditional vinyl records, where the entire disc is made of vinyl. The layered structure can affect the precision with which the grooves are formed, leading to less accurate sound reproduction.

Material Quality: The materials used in picture discs, particularly the paper image and the adhesive needed to bond the image to the vinyl, can introduce noise and distortion. These impurities in the material can interfere with the needle’s ability to track the grooves accurately.

Surface Noise: Picture discs often exhibit higher surface noise compared to standard vinyl records. The additional layers and the interaction between the paper and vinyl can create a background hiss or crackling that detracts from the audio clarity.

Durability and Wear: Picture discs can be more prone to wear and damage. The paper layer and different manufacturing process can make them less durable than traditional vinyl, leading to quicker degradation of sound quality over time.

Focus on Aesthetics over Sound: The primary appeal of picture discs is their aesthetic value, often featuring artwork or images related to the music. This focus on visual presentation can mean that less attention is given to the audio quality, which is the primary concern for audiophiles.

Alle Songs stammen vom Debütalbum “Phoenix”, das am 26. Januar 2024 via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird.

Auch die Debüt-Single “Like A Phoenix” steht als Musikvideo bei YouTube bereit. Das Trio um drei Ex-THUNDERMOTHER-Musikerinnen kommentiert ihren ersten Song:

Anfang des Jahres haben DRENGSKAPUR ihre Demo und ihr Debüt erstmals auf Vinyl veröffentlicht. Jetzt im Herbst waren dann das Nachfolgealbum von 2009 und die Songs der Split mit Nemesis Sopor von 2013 an der Reihe. Zur Split habe ich vor 10 Jahren schon ein Review geschrieben, welches ihr hier lesen könnt. Deswegen lasse ich die 3 Songs auch in diesem Review aus und konzentriere mich auf Album Nummer 2!

Als „Von Nebel Umschlungen“ erschien, sollte es noch 4 Jahre dauern, bis ich die Band überhaupt kennenlernte. Die Veröffentlichungen die dann folgten, waren schon etwas klarer, bzw. wohl eher aufwendiger produziert, sodass ich mich mit diesen Produktionen angefreundet hatte. Ich stehe ja wohl auf raueren, bzw. sogar Raw BM, hatte anfangs aber, eben aufgrund des grad beschriebenen Punktes Anlaufschwierigkeiten mit den ersten beiden Alben von DRENGSKAPUR. Musikalisch sind sie auch noch etwas anders gelagert, was sicherlich auch den jeweiligen Drummerwechseln geschuldet ist. Aber auch rifftechnisch wurde danach zugelegt. Auch wenn auf allen Scheiben unverkennbar DRENGSKAPUR am Werk ist.  Songs in Überlänge (meist über 10 Minuten), die trotzdem keine Längen aufweisen und den Wechsel von tollen Melodien zu irrer Raserei jedes Mal hervorragend vollziehen.
Man hat sich jedoch etwas von der Inspiration des osteuropäischen Black Metals entfernt finde ich, zumindest klingt er nicht mehr so durch, was meiner Begeistreung aber überhaupt keinen Abbruch tut.
Seitdem ich mir die beiden Alben aber auf Vinyl zugelegt habe, höre ich fast nur noch diese beiden Scheiben. Wahrscheinlich auch, weil mir die Songs noch nicht so geläufig sind.
Das obligatorische In- und Outro auf der Akustikgitarre ist wie immer gelungen.
zusätzlich zu den vorrangegangenen 67 Minuten gibt es auf der Wiederveröffentlichung mit „From Hateful Visions“ noch eine tolle Coverversion von den großartigen Judas Iscariot um danach noch auf Seite 3 mit dem ersten Song der Split zu starten, welche ihre anderen beiden Tracks auf Seite 4 unterbringt.
Doppel-Vinyl also gut ausgenutzt!
DRENGSKAPUR gehört damit weiterhin zu den besten deutschen Black Metal Bands, die es für mich gibt. Mit ihrer Art werden sie wohl nicht an die Spitze gelangen, ich glaube aber auch nicht, dass das jemals die Intuition hinter der Bandgründung war.

Hiervon gab es damals übrigens 500 handnummerierte CDs und dieses Mal sind es 300 handnummerierte Vinyls! (hendrik)

Die australische Progressive-Metal-Band CALIGULA’S HORSE hat ihr sechstes Album angekündigt: “Charcoal Grace” erscheint am 26. Januar 2024 via InsideOutMusic.

Mit “The World Breathes With Me” haben CALIGULA’S HORSE jetzt einen weiteren Song der Platte im Netz geteilt.

Der erste Vorab-Song zum Reinhören ist “Golem”, das Video zu “Golem” gibt’s auf YouTube.

Inspiriert wurde der Song von den Einschränkungen während der Corona-Pandemie:

“In ‘Golem’ geht es darum, wie wir während der Pandemie mit Erwartungen zu kämpfen hatten, die an uns gestellt wurden. Als Musiker spürten wir den Druck  besonders. Wir saßen untätig zu Hause und wussten nicht, wann oder ob wir zu unserem bisherigen Leben zurückkehren können. Gleichzeitig waren wir unter Druck, weil wir etwas Neues schaffen wollten. Das ist unsere, sehr eigenen Erfahrung, aber das grundsätzliche Thama von  ‘Golem’  kann wohl jeder nachempfinden. “

Die Black Metal-Band A/ORATOS hat einen Labeldeal bei Les Acteurs de l’Ombre Productions unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Franzosen ihr neues Album “Ecclesia Gnostica” veröffentlichen. Es ist das erste Album der Pariser, die 2019 mit der EP “Epignosis” debütierten und mit ihrer Musik die Materialität und spirituelle Nichtigkeit unserer zeitgenössischen Gesellschaft bekämpfen möchten.

“Ecclesia Gnostica” wurde von Frédéric Gervais im Sudio Henosis gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Vincent Fouquet ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 19. Januar 2024. Mit dem Lyric-Video zu “Daath” gibt es nun die erste Vorab-Single.

Ever just say to yourself, “I’m in the mood for some film noir shock rock…but make it hella camp!” Kai Kaldro has done just that with a tour de force of absolute mayhem: a murder mystery with all the trimmings – including some from old issues of Photoplay in the worst collage artistry you’ll see all day. (Or maybe it does it for you. We don’t judge around here.)

Enter POST COITAL, PRE MORTEM, the first single and title track from Kaldro’s upcoming debut LP.  In this bizarre track, Kai Kaldro struts as a kaleidoscopic enigma – part rock deity, part cinematic trickster. Swathed in the shadows of industrial soundscapes, he echoes the dusky, metallic tones of Rob Zombie, Ministry, and Thrill Kill Kult yet flips the script with an androgynous allure. Imagine him crooning in a murky baritone, the air thick with a horror-themed theatricality that could spook Hitchcock out of his director’s chair.

Kaldro unfurls a seance of sound, summoning the spirits of film noir and the Golden Age of Hollywood with a wink and a sinister smile. His lyrics? A diabolical satire, dripping with the essence of those black-and-white classics, yet spun with a modern, macabre twist. He’s a master of duality, seamlessly shifting from soft, almost feminine physicality to a thunderous vocal presence that could rattle the bones of the undead. In a world where rockstars are often cut from the same leather-clad cloth, this bitch shows up with a veil, pearls, cigarette holder and a butcher knife.

The video – definitely not safe for work – was directed by Shawn C Phillips, produced by Nicole Vegas. Melding together a drag rendition of a Tarantino film, an Alice Cooper concert, Psycho, The Shining, and THAT scene from Basic Instinct, this saucy little vignette may turn your stomach, but like every good drag show, the absurdity will also have you double over with laughter, dragging you straight to hell along with it.

“It can be really hard as a singer-songwriter to ever convey irony or sarcasm when the lyrics are in the first person because they‘re often misconstrued at face value if you’re singing about violence or atrocities, but I was real adamant that certain lyrics being sung from the femme fatale’s point of view felt the most effective. Says Kadro. “If you get it, you’ll get it.”

They continue: Unlike the iconic Ed Gein-inspired horror villains with female alter egos like Norman Bates, Leatherface, or Buffalo Bill who are very blunt in their murders and when finally revealed, appear quite awkward in drag… I thought it’d be interesting if our killer’s female side was so comfortable to the point of elaborately using “her” physicality…And in all morbid hilarity, the detective is so shallowly mesmerized by the superficial trappings and her apparel of the era that “made the woman” on screen: the neck of pearls, veiled pillbox hat, satin gloves, cocktail dress, and cherry red lips… so much so, that he doesn’t realize it’s another man he has sex with…The intention was to instrumentally replicate the slow burn and mysterious atmosphere of old 1940s detective films in an industrial rock soundscape, and but then lyrically catch it with its pants down by bluntly addressing the obvious sexual nature of those films that Hollywood at the time made hilariously transparent attempts to obfuscate thru the Hays Code stipulations. That’s where the dark humour and sardonic nature of the song is enacted.”

Post Coital, Pre Mortem is also Kaldro’s soundtrack contribution to the all-star horror film Desert Fiends, starring Eric Roberts, Bai Ling, Lorelei Linklater, Scout Taylor Compton, Tom Arnold, Brett Wagner, and many other slasher superstars.

Cinematically, Kaldro was mentored by his late great production sound mixer M Wolf Snyder (1985-2021). Kaldro’s dark sci-fi action short DISSOLVED GIRL was one of Wolf’s final pictures, who was then honored by Frances McDormand and director Chloe Zhao at the 2021 Oscars. At age 19, Kaldro was solidified as one of, if not the youngest film director to have a best picture winning crew member enlisted on his own production.

Once upon a not-so-distant past, Kai Kaldro was your typical mild-mannered, camera-shy, soft-spoken kid – the kind you’d never guess would end up howling at the moon. But, in a plot twist worthy of a pandemic-era memoir, Kaldro decided it was high time to shake things up. Enter his metamorphosis: from behind-the-scenes wallflower to a raucous, in-your-face embodiment of all things horror, gothic, and rock ‘n’ roll. Imagine a human whirlwind, equal parts loud, lewd, and totally unapologetic, slamming into the music scene with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

This is not your standard coming-of-age story. Kaldro’s reinvention paid off big time, propelling his debut single right onto the soundtrack of ‘Desert Fiends‘. But why stop at audio terror? Kaldro then plunged headfirst into the world of indie horror flicks, landing roles in scream-fests like The Punk Rockers Ghost, Skate to Hell, and Final Summer 2.

KK’S PRIEST veröffentlichten ihr zweites Studioalbum: “The Sinner Rides Again” erschien am 29. September 2023 via Napalm Records. Nun gibt es einen weiteren Clip zur Platte: “Sons Of The Sentinel” steht via YouTube auf Abruf bereit.

Zum VÖ-Tag veröffentlichte die Band mit “Hymn 66” ein weiteres Video.

Als dritte Single teilte die Band im August einen Clip zu “Strike Of The Viper” bei YouTube. Mit einem Video zu “Reap The Whirlwind” haben KK PRIEST im Juli einen weiteren Song daraus im Netz geteilt. Seit Ende Juni kann man in die erste Video-Single “One More Shot At Glory” reinhören.

Die Band um die ehemaligen JUDAS PRIEST-Mitglieder  K.K. Downing (Gitarre) und Tim “Ripper” Owens (Gesang) sowie A.J. Mills (Gitarre), Tony Newton (Bass) und Sean Elg (Schlagzeug) tritt im Sommer übrigens auch zum ersten Mal live auf und spielt einige Shows auf Festivals, im Anschluss ist die Band auf Tour in Großbritannien.

The year was 1984, and from England’s vibrant music scene emerged The Cult, shedding its old name and taking flight like a butterfly from its chrysalis. Their story is now etched in the annals of post-punk and rock ‘n’ roll, a tale of transformation and rebirth that continues to captivate the hearts and minds of their followers worldwide. As part of their 40th anniversary celebration, fans can now enjoy a special vinyl reissue of “Dreamtime,” their debut album, courtesy of Beggars Banquet. The release is set for February 23rd

The Cult’s journey began with its earlier forms, Southern Death Cult and then Death Cult, before they settled on their current, evocative name. The band, led by the charismatic Ian Astbury and the guitar wizardry of Billy Duffy, has traversed a remarkable path over four decades, producing 11 studio albums and selling over four million albums worldwide, garnished with gold and platinum accolades both in the UK and abroad.

“Dreamtime” was more than just an album; it was a declaration of a new musical direction, moving away from the goth and punk roots that first defined the band. Astbury and Duffy infused their music with elements inspired by indigenous cultures from the Americas and Australia, creating a sound that was both powerful and distinctive. The album’s first single, “Spiritwalker,” soared to the top of the UK’s independent chart, setting the stage for The Cult’s unique and enduring musical journey.



The band gained international fame with their 1985 album “Love,” featuring the rock anthem “She Sells Sanctuary,” and continued their success with the 1989 release “Electric,” which included hits like “Love Removal Machine,” “Wild Flower,” and “Lil’ Devil.” Their latest offering, “Under the Midnight Sun,” has been praised for maintaining the band’s fiery passion and melodic flair.

2023 saw a thrilling development as Astbury and Duffy briefly revived Death Cult for a series of live performances, including a special U.S. show at The Theatre at The Ace Hotel and several sold-out dates in the UK, like at the Brixton Electric.

The upcoming “Dreamtime” reissue, out on February 23rd, 2024, is available for pre-order now and features oxblood (indie-retail) and black vinyl editions.

Die Modern Industrial Metal-Band NORTHERN GENOCIDE hat mit “To Serve the Pestilence” den Opener ihres kommenden Albums “The Point of No Return” als Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

Zuvor sind Videos zu den Tracks “Harbingers of Genocide” und “Necropolis” – mit Gast-Sänger Tommy Tuovinen (MYGRAIN) – erschienen.

“”Necropolis” ist ein kraftvoller Song über die Verwundbarkeit und den Verfall der Menschheit während Epidemien und Krieg. Ein schöner nächtlicher Himmel und die Hitze der Sonne sind nur Symbole der Verzweiflung, wenn alles andere verloren ist.”

“The Point of No Return” ist nach “Genesis Vol. 666” (2019) das zweite Album der Finnen und wird am 1. März 2024 via Inverse Records erscheinen. Produziert wurde das Album von Rainer Pekkinen.

Die Synth / Punk Rock-Band MARATHONMANN hat unter dem Motto “Die Stadt gehört den Besten” für den 19. Januar 2024 ein Jahreseröffnungskonzert angekündigt. Stattfinden wird die Show im Feierwerk (Kranhalle) München, als Special Guest konnten THE DEADNOTES sowie FLYSWATTER gewonnen werden.

And Also The Trees returns with all new album ‘Mother-of-pearl Moon’ in 2024 and today launch a video for “This Path Through The Meadow”. The tracks on “Mother-of-pearl Moon” were born from a series of electric guitar improvisations created in the pre- and post-dawn hours during a month of solitude in 2020.

About And Also The Trees

The band was founded by singer Simon Jones and his guitarist brother Justin during the original post-punk era in rural Worcestershire. The band immediately caught the attention of Robert Smith of The Cure, who invited them to tour with his group on several occasions. Smith was also involved with their early recordings alongside his bandmate Lol Tolhurst, who produced their first records. They have released fifteen studio albums and toured frequently throughout mainland Europe, as well as North America and Japan.

The band nowadays consists of Simon Huw Jones, Justin Jones, Paul Hill, Grant Gordon and Colin Ozanne.

Schkeuditzer Kreuz, an Australian-based industrial synth crust artist and alias of Kieren Hills, releases “Second Life: No Life Left Remixed” as a download and as a double CD also including the album “No Life Left”.

Hills has been involved in various punk, crust, noise, deathrock, and hardcore scenes before going the industrial way of life. This remix collection precedes his New Zealand tour in January 2024. The remix album reimagines five tracks from his latest LP, “No Life Left” (August 2023), featuring remixes by Distruster (US), Max Rael (UK), Creassault (NZ), Non-Bio (UK), and Crash-Scan (NZ).

The inspiration for this collection finds its roots in the ’90s, when influential remix works by various artists was done that altered genres and created something new.
