Modern Men are back at it again. The French electro-punk project has dropped a new single, Antifrance, a tantalizing appetizer for their full-length album slated for 2024. Following their 2021 EP Partout en France, they seem to be tweaking their sound, veering towards a more electro vibe; swapping their leather jackets for something with a bit more circuitry and flak, evoking a more industrial-grade processed sound.

Enter Martin, the new dynamo in the duo, steering Modern Men’s sound into uncharted, yet electrifying waters. But fear not, purists! This isn’t a complete wardrobe change. The core ethos of nihilism, self-destruction, and a certain befuddlement with the modern world – akin to taking a sledgehammer to a failed attempt to assemble IKEA furniture without instructions – remains as intact as ever. Modern Men are renovating their musical house, but keeping the foundation firmly rooted in the angst and disquiet of their first two EPs.

The explosive lyrics to Antifrance delve into the theme of societal pressures and power dynamics, starting with a shared passion for targeting and pointing fingers at easy prey. There’s a critique of rigid societal norms that force conformity, and an observation of how the powerful often crush the weak, drawing a parallel to the Indochina conflict. The song also reflects on the allure of superficial glamour and the deceptions it breeds. It pays homage to heroic comrades fallen in battle, while criticizing a resistance war against France that ironically benefits drug dealers. The oppressed are depicted as crushed and marginalized, treated as mere nuisances.

Die Metalcore- / Djent-Band ALLEVIATE hat eine weitere Single veröffentlicht: “Better Pt. I” steht als Musikvideo bei YouTube bereit.

Zuvor teilte die Gruppe im November 2021 den Clip zum Song “Broken”. Die Band kommentiert die Nummer wie folgt:

“Broken handelt davon, Depressionen zu überwinden, die von dieser grausamen Welt verursacht wurden. Von allen im Stich und allein gelassen, findet der Protagonist tief in seinen eigenen Gedanken Kraft.
Wieder versucht ALLEVIATE zu lindern und dafür steht die Band; über persönliche Erfahrungen und den Versuch, den Hörern einen Weg zu weisen.

Zuletzt gab es im Frühjahr 2021 ein Musikvideo zur Debüt-Single “Die For Me”.

Im selben Jahr hatte die Formation einen Plattenvertrag mit Arising Empire abgeschlossen. ALLEVIATE sind Sänger Timo (OUR MIRAGE), Shouter Marius (BREAKDOWNS AT TIFFANY’S), Gitarristen Ramon (THE EVOLUTIONIST) und Marc (WE ARE PERSPECTIVES) sowie TIME, THE VALUATOR-Drummer Yunus.

Am 9. Dezember 2003 veröffentlichte ein junger Mann aus Frankreich auf seinem frisch gegründeten Label seine erste LP: „Satanik Terrorism“ von HAEMOTH. Mehr als 200 Veröffentlichungen später, hat sich das Labelprogramm von DEBEMUR MORTI durchaus gewandelt. Noch immer ist Black Metal der Kern des Labels, aber reifer und weniger plakativ ist der Großteil des Programms mittlerweile doch. Das spiegelt auch das Projekt EITRIN wieder. Das Quartett bestehend aus Vindsval und W.d.F. (BLUT AUS NORD), Marion (MÜTTERLEIN) und Dehn Sora (THROANE, TREHA SEKTORI) macht etwas Größeres aus der Summe seiner Teile.

EITRIN sind größer als die Summe ihrer Teile: Die Musiker:innen von MÜTTERLEIN, BLUT AUS NORD und THROANE debütieren mit dem giftigen Album „Eitrin“.
Konsequent haben sich die Musiker EITRIN benannt, was auch ein Alias für DEBEMUR MORTI ist, und sie machen aus ihren teils unterschiedlichen Backgrounds ein vollständiges Ganzes, gerade weil „Eitrin“ eine gewisse Spontaneität transportiert. Prinzipiell sind die Eckpunkte der Musik klar definiert: Vindsvals Riffs und Disharmonien, die nicht erst seit der Beschäftigung mit Lovecrafts Werken absolut aufs Angenehmste zu verstören wissen und sein immer versierter werdendes Spiel mit dem Fretless-Bass treffen auf die Dark Ambient-Soundscapes von Dehn Sora, die auch die letzten Ritzen der Soundwand mit einer beunruhigenden Atmosphäre füllen.

Und doch wohnt „Eitrin“ eine völlig eigene Energie inne, die spürbar abseits von BLUT AUS NORDs abstraktem Black Metal liegt: Angeschwärzter Hardcore, wie von HEXIS, OATHBREAKER oder auch PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND erweitert das Gesamtbild. Der Black Metal-Dark Ambient-Mix erhält so eine gewisse Erdung, die der Musik aber exzellent steht. Dazu passt die Performance des heimlichen Stars auf EITRINs Debütalbum ganz hervorragend: Es ist MÜTTERLEIN, deren brutale, intensive Vocals und die teils wütenden, teils verzweifelten, stets persönlichen Lyrics die Musik noch eine Spur mitreißender werden lässt. Sie hat genug Kraft in der Stimme, um sich gegen die Soundwand durchzusetzen, und platziert das teils abstrakte Songmaterial mit ihrer Wut und Direktheit auf dem harten Boden der Tatsachen.

Sängerin MÜTTERLEIN erdet „Eitrin“ mit Wut und Direktheit – EITRIN ankern an der Oberfläche und graben sich ins Innere.
Bereits das explosive „RICIN – The Bloody King Of All Poison“ lässt erschaudern, Dissonanzen explodieren förmlich, das Stück erfährt dann aber ein episches Finale mit betörenden Harmonien und Chören. Vindsvals Riffs sind auf den Punkt komponiert, was „SARIN – Consigned To Oblivion“ mit seiner herzerreißenden Lyrik und Marions verzweifelten Vocals zeigt. Die Tiefe der Texte spiegelt sich in der Musik, die dank Synthesizer, treibender Double Bass-Rhythmen und Fretless Bass wie aus dem Bauch der Hölle zu kommen scheint. Kürzer und kompakter sind „CYANIDE – A Cracked Dam“ und „PHENOL – Sinister“, die trotz ihrer Simplizität nicht fragmentiert wirken, sondern einfach genau auf den Punkt komponiert sind.

Und stets ist da diese cineastische-abstrakte Atmosphäre, dabei verstehen EITRIN es, den realistischen Zivilisationshorror der Texte, in Musik zu gießen. Das grenzt nicht selten ans Manische, was „ARSENIC – The Eye Of The Whale“ mit seinem überbordenden Chaos zeigt. Doch EITRIN können auch anders: „MUSCARINE – What Is Sacred“ ist vergleichsweise langsam, setzt Chöre und Melancholie nebst Horror ins Zentrum und ist ein leichtes Luftholen vor „CURARE – The Silence Of The Innocent“, ein weiterer chaotischer Mahlstrom als anschließendes Finale Furioso.

Wenn nur alle prominenten Projekte so viel Substanz wie EITRIN besäßen: Das Debütalbum „Eitrin“ gehört zum Besten, was 2023 im extremen Bereich veröffentlicht wurde.
EITRIN liefern auf ihrem Debüt sieben oft kompakte Tracks, stets benannt nach einem anderen Gift. Toxisch ist „Eitrin“ vielleicht nicht, aber dennoch beinahe ein Fall fürs Betäubungsmittelgesetz: Das Album macht sofort süchtig mit seinem Furor, seiner Atmosphäre und seiner Variabilität, es ankert an der Oberfläche und gräbt sich mit jedem Mal mehr ins Innere. Verstörende Musik war selten so verführerisch und zugänglich, auch aller Dissonanzen und pechschwarzer Ambient-Momente zum Trotz. Für ein Debütalbum ist das alles absolut erstaunlich und beweist, wie sehr die Protagonisten eine zueinander passende künstlerische Sprache sprechen.

Was bleibt nun noch anderes, als zu rufen: Happy Birthday, DEBEMUR MORTI! Dieses Label weiß, wie man eine gute Feier schmeißt: Einige der spannendsten und prominentesten Musiker:innen, die ihre Musik über dieses Label veröffentlichen, schmeißen ihre Talente und Trademarks zusammen und erzeugen so ein geschlossenes, großes Ganzes, das beängstigend gut gelungen ist. Da wäre es wirklich schade, wenn „Eitrin“ das einzige Lebenszeichen dieses Projektes bliebe, zumal die Übergänge zwischen Dark Ambient und Black Metal noch etwas weniger abrupt sein könnten – was aber Geschmackssache ist – und vor allem, weil noch nicht alle unbekannten Territorien erkundet sind. Dieses Projekt hat eine Menge Potenzial, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass der erste Wurf gleich zum Besten gehört, das 2023 im extremen Bereich veröffentlicht wurde. In diesem Sinne: Auf die nächsten 20 Jahre voller total fucking darkness!

Die Industrial / Symphonic Metal-Band RAVE THE REQVIEM hat mit “Zero Solace” einen weiteren Video-Clip von ihrem aktuellen Album “Ex-Eden” veröffentlicht. Davor gab es bereits den Clip “Exit Babylon“: Der Song ist inspiriert vom Alten Testament und der Versklavung des Volkes Gottes durch Tyrannen und Sünder. Aufgenommen und gemischt wurde die Platte von Raphaël Bovey, das Mastering übernahm Lad Agabekov. Für das Artwork zeichnet Sebastian Jerke verantwortlich.

FLOYA ist der Name des Projekts von Marv Wilder (ex-ALAZKA) und Phil Bayer (ex-TIME, THE VALUATOR), das musikalisch zwischen Emo-Rock, Weltmusik und elektronischen Elementen unterwegs ist. Jetzt gibt es mit “Drift” einen weiteren Song bei YouTube als Video. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Auskopplung aus dem Debütalbum “Yume”, das am 8. März 2024 via Arising Empire auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen wird. Produziert wurde die Platte von Chris Kempe, das Mastering übernahm Robin Schmidt.

Ebenfalls verfügbar sind die Songs “Stay”,  “Willows”, “Florescent” und “Weaver”, die ebenfalls als Clip bei YouTube zur Verfügung stehen.

Ende Juni 2022 teilte man die dritte Single “Epiphany” mitsamt Videoclip bei YouTube. Auch den zweiten Song “The Hymn” hat man als Musikvideo bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Den Track kommentiert Phil Bayer:

„The Hymn handelt von Kompromissen und Loslassen, aber auch davon, mit diesen Konzepten Frieden zu schließen. Es gibt Zeiten, in denen Du erkennst, dass Du nicht alles haben kannst, was Du willst, also musst Du entscheiden, was Du verfolgen und was Du loslassen möchtest. Solche Dinge können manchmal ziemlich dramatisch sein, aber am Ende lehren mich diese Szenarien, was mir am wichtigsten ist.“

Erst Ende März 2022 hatte das Duo den Abschluss eines Plattenvertrags mit Arising Empire verkündet und zeitgleich die erste Single veröffentlicht: “Wonders” bei YouTube. Aufgenommen wurden die neuen Songs mit Produzent Chris Kempe, das Mastering übernahm Robin Schmidt.

Sänger Phil erklärt:

“Als ich 2018 die Musikindustrie verließ, wusste ich nicht wirklich, ob ich zu dem zurückkehren könnte, was ich am meisten liebte, ich musste sozusagen einen Traum loslassen. Als wir also FLOYA kreierten und anfingen, diesen Song zu schreiben, wollte ich, dass es um Positivität und die Ausdauer geht, überall im Leben anzukommen, wo man hin will. ‘Wonders’ ist unsere Hommage an all die Menschen da draußen, die jeden Tag kämpfen, egal unter welchen Umständen, ihre Träume zu leben. Pack es an und du wirst es schaffen.“

St Petersburg, Florida, is the home of Liquid Pennies, an avant-garde ensemble known for blending neo-psych with post-punk dynamism. The band, comprised of Chas Binns (vocals, guitar, synth), Dylan Carney (bass), and the percussive powerhouse of Whicker and Jones, constantly stirs their diverse influences into new, exhilarating experiences. Now they’re all abuzz with the release of their latest music video, Name Dropper, a visual escapade as lively and sprightly as the band’s distinctive rhythmic pulse and as electrifying as their sound.

Name Dropper does not tiptoe around the band’s creative frontiers; it leaps over them with the grace of a ballet dancer and the energy of a quasar. The track’s vibrant fuzz-tone distortion is akin to a sonic bulldozer, cheerfully laying waste to everything in its wake. And then, as if that weren’t enough, it unfurls melodic hooks with the casual flair of a magician pulling rabbits out of a hat.

But the real showstopper? The dual drums. They absolutely smash, creating a rhythmic rumble that you can feel resonating through the soles of your shoes. Liquid Pennies emerged in 2018 as a musical melting pot.Their self-produced debut in 2019, Floods, was a crafty blend of analogue warmth and digital clarity. Zoë Turtle joined the ensemble in 2020, bringing her violin and vocals into the mix for the creation of Secrets Dash, an indie-produced gem.

2021’s Distant Dawn, recorded with Nathan Doyle, marked a mature step in their evolution, followed by a prolific 2022. That year, they released the raw D.E.  EP and the ambitious Any Wonder, an hour-long journey with a parade of guest musicians.

2023 started with A Wake-Ending, a showcase of the band’s live energy and intricate craftsmanship, honed on East Coast tours. Then, in a bold move, they added dual drummers Pierson Whicker and Casey Jones in June, infusing their sound with a new, heavy, and controlled rhythmic energy.

Kennt ihr das, wenn euch ein Album von den ersten einsetzenden Klängen wohlig in den Bann zieht und man nach dem Ausklingen des letzten Songs ganz schnell wieder zur Repeat-Taste greift? So ergeht es uns mit dem neuen Album von Sascha Klein und Henning Verlage. Für uns als Hörer steht natürlich intuitiv die Musik im Vordergrund und dann kommen anschließed bei näherer Beschäftigung damit auch die eigentlichen Inhalte - nämlich die Texte - zum tragen.  Und hier lohnt es sich wie immer bei NEUROTICFISH und ihr solltet genau hinhören: Das Album hört übersetzt auf den etwas sperrigen Namen "Die Entmystifizierung des menschlichen Herzens" und bildet thematisch eine fesselnde, eine elektrisierende Einsicht in den Niedergang der Gesellschaft ab.

Yet, as fate would have it, such reprieves are as elusive as a quiet moment in Times Square.

Enter LDV’s latest track and accompanying video: Too Many Voices, which hits the nail precisely on the head, both mirroring our collective befuddlement and providing a soundtrack to our very predicament. In a world where we’re ostensibly connected by the invisible threads of technology, one cannot help but wonder if we’re actually more like ships passing in the digital night—close enough to wave, yet too far to touch.

There’s a glimmer of hope in this tempestuous tale. Amidst the chaos, the children are whisked away from the storm’s eye, a decision made by a father who’s determined to be the lighthouse in the fog of turmoil. It’s a pivotal moment, swinging the door open to the possibility of redemption – by pulling back before the point of no return.

The red light illuminates the underlying sense of oppression that pervades the video. It flickers and flares, like a warning signal, underscoring the urgency and the intensity of the unfolding drama.

Descending into the neon-lit corridors of Toronto’s underground scene, Robert Alfons, famously known as TR/ST and formerly as Trust, emerged in 2010 like a suave glitch in the matrix. His unique brand of dark electronic pop defied the norm, rapidly evolving into a cult favorite. This musical maestro blends somber beats with a mystique that gives you just a taste of his unique sound.

As TR/ST soared past a flurry of global tours and relocated to the picturesque Los Angeles, the project transcended its original identity, becoming an institution in dark dance music. Alfons added ‘Joyland’ (2014) and the formidable ‘The Destroyer Parts 1 & 2’ (2019) to his repertoire, riding the waves of the music industry with a masterful touch.

Now, in a significant move, TR/ST has joined forces with Dais Records. The Hungarian gothic rock band Utolsó Hullám has released their first video clip for the song “Ez a reggel sem az enyém”. “Ez a reggel sem az enyém” can loosely be translated as “This morning hasn’t worked out either” referring to Lionel Richie’s classic “I’m not easy on this morning either”.

The song is about how waking up in the morning is difficult when you miss your long gone lover.

Utolsó Hullám was founded in 2019 and released their debut album “Szárnytalan Angyal” (Wingless Angel) in March 2023. Utolsó Hullám are Árpád (Motyó) Jakab, Tamás Némedi, Csongor Szegi and Richárd Buda.

Nürnberg, a post-punk duo comprising Yury Luhautsou (vocal, bass, synths) and Aleh Sautin (guitar), hail from Minsk, Belarus. Today the band announces the release of Adkaz, their third studio album. The title, translating to “answer” in English, hints at the thematic richness within.

Formed in 2016, Nürnberg’s artistic vision is deeply rooted in the melancholic essence of post-Soviet urban landscapes. Their music reflects an exploration of existential themes, social issues in today’s industrial societies, and the often overwhelming pressure and fatigue of modern life. Yet, amidst this sombre reflection, their work also resonates with the essential human capacities for love and compassion.

Nürnberg’s sound, characterized by a moody ambience, is infused with a palpable energy, akin to Gang of Four, Chameleons, Talk Talk, and Killing Joke. Their compositions are imbued with a sense of melancholy, gloom, and desolation, all while being adorned with shimmering reverb and bittersweet melodies. One feels a sense of compassion nestled within this fatalistic dance music built on kick and clap drum beats,  resonant, melodic basslines, and piercing, wistful guitar leads that intertwine with Luhautsou’s emotive vocals.

Adkaz presents a poignant reflection on the individual’s existence during pivotal historical moments. The songs delve into themes of aversion and mental health, resonating deeply with the contemporary Eastern European experience. This nuanced exploration of the psychological impact of such transformative times strikes a chord with listeners who are navigating similar challenges.

Additionally, the album weaves in narratives of love and personal experiences, broadening its emotional scope. These themes of love and connection offer a counterbalance to the more introspective and challenging aspects of the album, providing a multifaceted view of human experience.

Since their inception, Nürnberg has charted an impressive course in the music world. Their beginnings can be traced back to a demo released in August 2017. From there, their musical repertoire has blossomed, comprising two albums, Skryvaj and Paharda, two EPs, three singles, and two remix albums. Their influence extends well beyond the borders of Belarus, as evidenced by their European tour and performances at notable festivals such as Waves Vienna, Eurosonic Noorderslag, and AtlasWeekend Kyiv, spanning Belarus, Poland, and Russia.

Adkaz is slated for release under the German label Young and Cold Records on February 8, 2024. This new venture features eight fresh tracks, recorded in collaboration with Raman Kamahorcaŭ (Molchat Doma) and their sound engineer Andrej Babroŭka. Complementing the music, the cover and artwork for the album have been crafted by Belgrado’s Jonathan Sirit, adding a stunning Constructivist visual dimension to the band’s evolving identity.

Die Berliner Dark Wave Band GOLDEN APES feiert ihren 25 Geburtstag. Während anderswo Schachteln oder Socken ein zweites Leben eingehaucht wird, werden GOLDEN APES mit einem ganz besonderen Geschenk geehrt. 22 Bands, die auf die eine oder andere Weise Teil der Geschichte wurden, haben sich jeweils einem Song aus dem Repertoire angenommen, um ihn mit ganz eigenen Interpretationen auf den Gabentisch zu legen. An dieser Stelle auch von uns HERZLICHEN GLÜCKWUNSCH zum silbernen Jubiläum!!!

Das Ganze ist sehr abwechslungsreich gestaltet. Zwar sind alle Bands irgendwie Teil der dunklen Szene, dennoch sind ihre Stile ganz unterschiedlich. Angefangen bei SAIGON BLUE RAIN, die Franzosen widmen sich mit ihrem Cold Wave/Etheral Sound „From the Sky“, einen Golden Apes-Song neueren Datums. Ähnlich geartet sind DUCTAPE, wobei der weibliche Gesang hier ein wenig dunkler in die Szenerie dringt und die Musik etwas elektronischer daher kommt. THE CITY GATES aus Amerika widmen sich mit einer tragischen Version einem Song vom 2012er Album „Riot“ – „The Happy Losers´ Sweet Delusion“, ihr Post Punk Gaze erinnert teilweise an The Jesus and Mary Chain.

MIKE YORK (Garden of Delight, Sweet Ermengarde) & RËVEREND GONZ (erster Sänger von Love like Blood) widmen sich dem Song „Drown“ und verzieren die Düsternis mit reichlich Saiten. GIRLS UNDER GLASS zaubern in „Satin gardens“ mit elektronischer Finesse und sphärischen Klangspektren. NO MORE glänzen mit dem ruhig inszenierten „The Seasons‘ War“, während es bei den Argentiniern von AMAUTICA („Los Arqueros (The Archer)“) wieder heftiger und gitarrenlastiger zugeht.

Das Dark Elektro Projekt KISS OF THE WHIP liefert eine dunkle und tanzbar-verspielte Version von „Prudence“. Das Electro Wave Duo STRIDULUM hat kürzlich ein neues Album veröffentlicht, bei dem auch Peer Lebrecht einem Song seine Stimme lieh. Hier gibt es eine Version von „Verity“, welche nicht zuletzt vom durchdringenden, weiblichen Gesang lebt. Ein wenig Siouxsie-like kommen die Amerikaner von PILGRIMS OF XEARNING daher. Experimentell und reichlich schräg kümmern sich die Franzosen von DEAR DEER um „Correlation“.

Eine wunderschöne, trurig-dramatische Version von „Parting“ gibt es von WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW. Ruhig und getragen wird dieses balladeske Stück sehr gefühlvoll dargeboten. Druckvoller und mit vehementer Saiten-Orgie versehen, befassen sich TUNES OF DAWN mit „Mark of Cain“, zwischendrin lugt immer ein wenig Doom hervor.

Zum Schluss zelebrieren die Bauarbeiter der PATENBRIGADE:WOLFF ihre Art von verschnörkeltem Synth Pop und remixen „Vengeance“. WHITE NOISE TV schlagen in die gleiche Kerbe und verwandeln „Grinding Mills“ zu eine Future Pop Hymne. Weitere Gratulanten sind DAYS OF SORROW, DISTANCE H, BEDLESS BONES und die Schweden von THEN COMES SILENCE.

Besonders aufgefallen ist mir ST///LL (Nachfolgeband von The Last Cry) mit ihrer gothrockigen Variation von „Hold me“. Das aktuelle Album der Band erschien Anfang November. bandcamp

Ein wahrlich tolles, würdevolles Geburtstagsgeschenk, welches zudem für den Hörer reichlich Futter bietet und nebenbei dafür sorgt, dass man mal wieder auf Entdeckungsreise durch den Dschungel der dunklen Musik waten sollte. Denn jede hier vertretene Band verdient es, sich ein bisschen mehr mit ihrer Musik zu beschäftigten.

Diese Compilation wird ausschließlich als digitaler Download über die Golden Apes Bandcamp-Seite erhältlich sein und alle erzielten Erlöse werden vollständig an die gemeinnützige Organisation „Kinderhospiz Sonnenhof“ gespendet, ein Krankenhaus, das schwerkranke Kinder betreut und unterstützt. Content: The compilation features a few artists which are already familiar with Je M’En Fish, Alfa Matrix-artists (Italian formation Helalyn Flowers and the band members’ side-projects Noemi Aurora and Imjudas) plus a few other  names. The content is quite diversified and features songs from the 80s, 90s and 00”.

+ + + : Diversified compilation covering songs from very different and sometimes distant eras; from the very 80s Flesh & Fell Electro-Experiment (1985) to Ethereal-Pop of The Dreamside (1994) to the melancholic Dark/Cold-Wave of The Frozen Autumn (1996) to 80s inspired Electro-Pop from Danish Am Tierpark to contemporary Electro-Metal-Pop of Helalyn Flowers. There also is a live version from The Neon Judgement’s “Tomorrow In The Papers” from 1984 revealing the band during their early, glorious, days.

– – – : This compilation series sounds to me more as an item for collectors instead of DJ’s. No bad thing but maybe a reason why this compilation will remain under the radar.

Mit der 7"-Single "Fairies Wear Boots" spendieren ZAKK SABBATH einen ersten Vorgeschmack auf ihren zweiten Longplayer, dessen Erscheinen für Anfang 2024 geplant ist.

Dieser amüsante Klassiker des Heavy Metal wurde ursprünglich im Jahr 1970 als letzter Track auf BLACK SABBATHs zweitem Album "Paranoid" veröffentlicht. ZAKK SABBATH sind aus purer Leidenschaft und Liebe zur Musik entstanden. Der Gitarrist, Sänger und Kopf von BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, Zakk Wylde, der sich auch als langjähriger Lead-Gitarrist bei OZZY OSBOURNE und nun auch noch PANTERA einen Namen machte, gründete die Band als Hommage an die „Erfinder“ des Heavy Metal: BLACK SABBATH.

Anfangs spielten ZAKK SABBATH zunächst nur Live-Shows in wechselnder Besetzung, bis im Jahr 2017 die 12"-EP "Live in Detroit" erschien. Vom 50. Jahrestag des selbstbetitelten Debütalbums von BLACK SABBATH inspiriert, das bezeichnenderweise am Freitag, dem 13. im Jahr 1970 veröffentlicht wurde, ging die mittlerweile stabile Besetzung mit Zakk sowie OZZY OSBOURNE und ROB ZOMBIE Bassist Blasko und Joey Castillo am Schlagzeug (DANZIG, QUEEN OF THE STONE AGE) ins Studio, um jenem Album einen angemessenen Tribut zu zollen, dessen Songs die Geschichte der Musik entscheidend beeinflusst hat. Ein Jahr später erschien das ZAKK SABBATH Debüt mit allen Songs des monumentalen BLACK SABBATH Meilensteins unter dem Titel "Vertigo" (2020), womit die Amerikaner auf das legendäre Label Vertigo Records des Vierers aus Birmingham anspielten. "Vertigo" wurde von Kritikern und Fans gleichermaßen mit Lob überschüttet. Der Erstling des Trios wurde zu einem globalen Erfolg, was durch beeindruckende Platzierungen in den Charts unterstrichen wurde: "Vertigo" kletterte auf Platz 5 in den US Hard Music Charts, wo es auch Platz 7 in den Current Rock Albums Charts und Platz 27 in den Billboard Top Albums Charts erreichte. Im Ausland kaperte die Tributscheibe sogar Platz 1 der Metal Alben Charts in Frankreich sowie Platz 3 der deutschen Album-Charts und den 9ten Rang der UK Top 40 Rock/Metal-Charts. Frontwoman Elena Alice Fossi explains: “One could say that ‘deep time’ is the temporal immensity in which humanity is immersed in its relationship with Earth and geological phenomena. Out now is “Obelisk”, the debut single from Chicago-based electronic pop artist Brittany Bindrim (I:Scintilla). The single is the first teaser for her solo debut album “Velella Velella” which will be out on Metropolis Records on March 8th 2024.

“Obelisk” comes accompanied by a video directed by Simona Noreik.

For this solo endeavour Bindrim worked together with producer Matt McJunkins (A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, Eagles of Death Metal, Poppy).

In their latest single Prymara, Ukrainian deathrockers Old Cat’s Drama have dipped their billowy artistic quills into the inkwell of classic gothic rock, drawing a line straight to the heart of their influences – think Clan of Xymox meets Christian Death, with a helping of Bauhaus and Corpus Delicti. The track, tinged with the same kind of existential angst that made The Cure’s “One Hundred Years” a staple for moody introspection, offers a kind of melancholy that’s almost cheerful in its gloom.

Prymara is a masterclass in emotional storytelling, with the band weaving a narrative that’s as evocative as a well-spun yarn. This single isn’t just a peek into Old Cat’s Drama’s evolving artistry; it’s like a trailer for an upcoming blockbuster of an album, promising more of their signature blend of brooding melodies and lyrical depth.

At the core of Prymara is a vocal performance that could raise the dead with its haunting power, defining the band’s sound with a ghostly resonance. Since their formation as a duo in 2011, Old Cat’s Drama has carved out a unique niche in the traditional goth music scene, emerging as a semi-cult phenomenon in their home city. Their discography, marked by the EP Pretty Things and the album Come And See, has cemented their status as a significant presence in this genre.

The band’s creative vision is helmed by original members Herold E., whose haunting vocal and lyrical contributions define their sound, and Divuar L., responsible for the music and the resonant guitar work. In a notable development in 2019, Oleksii Sup, previously associated with the band Quadrille (Кадриль), joined the ranks of Old Cat’s Drama. His addition has brought a renewed energy and perspective to the group, enriching their established style.

Currently, Old Cat’s Drama is engaged in crafting their next album, a project that promises to stretch the limits of their musical expression. With Oleksii Sup’s influence, the band is experimenting with new elements, evolving their distinct blend of goth rock and deathrock.

MASSACRE haben einen Plattenvertrag bei Agonia Records unterschrieben und arbeiten zurzeit an ihrem fünften Studioalbum.

Zu aktuellen Besetzung der amerikanischen Death Metal-Band gehören neben den beiden Originalmitgliedern Kam Lee (ex-MANTAS, ex-DEATH, BONE GNAWER, The Grotesquery) und Mike Borders die Gitarristen Rogga Johansson (PAGANIZER, RIB SPREADER, MEGASCAVANGER) und Jonny Pettersson (Wombbath, HEADS FOR THE DEAD) sowie Drummer Jon Rudin (JUST BEFORE DAWN, HEADS FOR THE DEAD, DEHUMANAUT).

“Es ist ziemlich cool, einen Vertrag bei Agonia Records zu haben. Bei diesem Label sind Bands wie PESTILENCE, REBAELLIUN, DEMONICAL, PATHOLOGY und so viele andere tolle Death- und Black-Metal-Bands zu Hause. Sieht man sich die Liste der Bands an, wird klar, dass dieses Label den Underground Metal Bands verschrieben hat. We all know Mark Hockings as the singer of Mesh. Mark originally wanted to write his own music and finally, accidentally, became a singer. During the lockdown he started writing his own music and released a few singles. Blackcarburning was born and this year released the debut-album “Watching Sleepers” on COP International. Fourteen songs have been released featuring guest singers Neil Francis, Mari Katmann, Howie Venton and Janne Marvannen. “Watching Sleepers” sounds as pure Electro-Pop; a styled and alluring production for Mesh- and 80s fans.

Q: I got the feeling Blackcarburning was already spinning for a while in a corner of your mind so what have been the triggers to get it activated? And what kind of sound did you want to compose?

It was going to be low level -maybe a few instrumentals. Nothing big, just something to scratch an itch I guess. I messed about with some music in the early days of the pandemic. Mesh were on a well-deserved break and I was building a proper studio in my house. I gave one of my ideas to Mari Kattman (who I’d worked with on a Mesh track and will appear on a future Mesh release) and I unexpectedly had a song. I just carried on writing really. I had enough tracks for a single, then two singles, then an EP, then the full album “Watching Sleepers”. There was such a momentum to it all and I felt like I’d tapped into a real vein of inspiration. It was very satisfying and unexpected.

Q: You for sure will be always connected to Mesh which makes the challenge to start a side/solo-project exciting, right? What did you experience as the pros and cons to release a solo-album? And what have been the biggest challenges and difficulties in the composition- & production process?

Mark: It has been a challenge overall, yes. There was a certain amount of pressure I guess, but that pressure didn’t come to the fore until the end of the process, when we were ready to release – that was “Judgement Day”. When you’re working on your own it requires an certain amount of discipline, self-motivation and confidence in your own abilities. I had to learn to be better at those things and from that respect it was certainly a life changing journey, about one I’m glad I put myself through. Many of the skills that I’ve left to other people (like final production, mixing, ‘editorial’ etc) I had to study and learn. Everything was down to me, and stopped with me.

I had to build a proper listening environment to mix in. It was ultimately a big investment in recording equipment, and an investment in time to learn how to use those tools. There were certain technical challenges recording guest vocalists -I didn’t want to just send files back and forward, but rather produce the singers ‘live’. I used a remote recoding solution called ‘VST Live’ where I could work with singers in real time. This was a game changer and ultimately the results were as good as anything I could have hoped for if we were all in the studio in person.

Q: Did you handle specific criteria and/or references in the achievement of this work plus the choice of guest singers?

Mark: Not really. I just wrote without any particular direction. Mesh has a ‘sound’, and together myself and Rich  create something that is original but recognisable, but always a product of our combined skills. I was able to write without restriction because I had no audience to think of, and no expectations to live up to. This was liberating in most respects, and I think it allowed me to be more productive as every idea seemed to lead somewhere interesting.

With Mari, the choice was initially just shot in the dark to see what would happen. The first track with Neil Francis “Love In Control” was originally written for myself, but I didn’t think it sounded as good as it could, so I asked him to re-do it. The other tracks with Neil I wrote specifically with him in mind. With “Your Heart Is Like An Island”, I specifically wrote the track for Janne. So the approach varied.

Q: What is “Watching Sleepers” all about? And what has been the impact of the lockdowns to the writing and content of the album?

Mark: “Watching Sleepers” contains a lot of personal and social commentary from the last few years. A great deal happened to the World during the time of the album writing, and that spilled over into everyones personal lives, their mental well-being, their feelings of security and hopes for the future. I never specifically tried to write about that time, but I think it’s evident in the lyrics and feel. Moments of reflection, anger, sadness and uncertainty.

Mark: There were many stages to the writing of the album.

The most important part is getting the bulk of the album written -it’s an important framework around which to work and to understand what you have as a whole. This is the part I enjoy the most.

I would then focus on the production and editing -removing stuff that was surplus, that added nothing, was self-indulgent for just made the track longer than it needed to be. Everything should have a purpose, and if not it should be removed. It’s difficult to do sometimes as the removed parts could be 100’s of hours of work, but it’s necessary.

The final mixing is the last stage. Getting the album to sound like a real record. This is the most difficult stage but is also very satisfying if you get it right, which I think I did. I include pre-mastering, frequency analysis, loudness metering in this stage.

Of course there were other stages that were just as important -finding a great record label (COP International) and a publisher (Schubert)  being the two biggest ones.

Q: I noticed the very specific artwork of your album -and singles,  which seems directly connected to the name of your project. What is it all about and is there a connection with Helen Mort’s novel “Black Car Burning”?

Mark: All the artwork was done by myself. I was getting a little tired of heavily photoshopped artwork and decided to try a ‘back to basics’ and more natural approach. I bought 30 or 40 model cars and photographed them against backgrounds printed out on photographic paper. Each ‘diorama’ had some connection or theme relating to the song. I used some lights and coloured gels -nothing complicated. There is some colour correction on the images, but otherwise they are just as I shot them. It was quite a lot of work, but once I had the technique it got easier. Again, it was very satisfying to see the results, especially on physical media like CD’s.

I tend to write phrases and words in my phone when I hear something interesting. There was a book review on the radio of Helens novel and I wrote down ‘Black Car Burning’ in my phone. When I came to look for a band name this fitted perfectly. I must read the novel one day.

Q: What are your plans for Blackcarburning?

Mark: I would ultimately like to take Blackcarburning out touring. We are starting to look at this now, but no dates are decided yet. Hopefully late 2024. I will certainly be writing another full-length album and am hoping to fit this around the writing of the next MESH album.

The American online audio distribution platform Bandcamp is said to be in heavy waters after being acquired by Songtradr – if you have to believe many musicians – but is it really?

Founded in 2007 by Oddpost co-founder Ethan Diamond and programmers Shawn Grunberger, Joe Holt and Neal Tucker, Bandcamp was initially acquired by Epic Games in March 2022, which sold the company to Songtradr in 2023 following significant layoffs at Epic Games in September 2023. The sale led to employment uncertainties for Bandcamp staff, with only about half receiving job offers from Songtradr.

Songtradr itself is a leading music licensing platform, connecting artists with brands and creators for licensing purposes. As of 2019, it was the world’s largest such platform, housing over 400,000 artists from 190 countries, and facilitating music licensing for various media projects. Artists on Songtradr can upload their music and set their own licensing fees.

Bandcamp post-acquirement by Songtradr

The reaction to Bandcamp’s acquisition by Songtradr and the subsequent layoffs has been met with significant concern and criticism from both the music community and Bandcamp’s staff. The layoffs, which affected approximately half of Bandcamp’s workforce, have been a major point of contention. Many of these laid-off employees took to social media to express their disappointment and frustration, revealing a sense of betrayal given the prior assurances about the continuity of operations at Bandcamp​.

The layoffs included key members of Bandcamp’s staff union, Bandcamp United, which has since filed an unfair labor practice violation claim with the National Labor Relations Board against Songtradr and Epic Games.

CEO Paul Wiltshire of Songtradr however has announced that he plans to introduce licensing opportunities to Bandcamp artists, potentially broadening their reach and income. This move, focused on enhancing artists’ control over their music rights and revenue, actually dovetails with Songtradr’s mission of simplifying music licensing and boosting the value of music rights.

In an interview Wiltshire explains that Songtradr’s strategy has been buying companies (such as Bandcamp) “that really marry that vision of simplifying licensing.” And he adds: “The strategy around Bandcamp was: We’re seeing a trend in the market where music is becoming increasingly important in brands and games and fitness apps and meditation apps, all these different touchpoints. And we’ve seen an increased trend in brands in particular: They want to know about the artist who’s behind the music.”

Songtradr has also committed to maintaining popular Bandcamp initiatives like Bandcamp Fridays, which enhance earnings for artists and labels: “We looked at the business model, and we love the business as it is; there’s no plans to change the existing model. What we wanted to do was connect licensing to the Bandcamp offering.”

Licensing via Songtradr would be an opt-in only basis for the artists so that they continue to control their rights and control their destiny. “We’ve seen what happens when an independent artist has a license it can be quite transformational in terms of streaming numbers. We’ve licensed music to TikTok and suddenly an artist has blown up unexpectedly because brands got ahold of it. We really believe in licensing as being a key driver for your expanded awareness of an artist’s career.”

AI enters the field via Musicube

Interesting enough Songtradr uses the AI company Musicube which they also bought. Musicube scans the audio files and creates metadata points that describe it in simple terms like mood and BPM, and, and here’s the big USP, it can predict the audience that would most align with sections of the song right down to small fractions, like five seconds.

Considering the acquisition of Bandcamp by Songtradr, it’s realistic to anticipate that many artists on the platform may experience new opportunities for licensing income. Songtradr, with its focus on connecting artists with brands and content creators for licensing purposes, opens up a new realm of potential for Bandcamp artists. While not every artist might pursue or s쳮d in licensing their music, the integration with Songtradr’s extensive licensing network significantly increases the likelihood for many artists to find new revenue streams.

Moreover, Songtradr’s acquisition could lead to a broader exposure for artists, as their music might find its way into various forms of media like advertising, films, and digital content. This expanded visibility not only potentially increases licensing income but also helps in building an artist’s brand and audience base.

Lot’s of mights, but Rome wasn’t built in one day either.

Neu im Line-up sind nun DIEVERSITY. Als erster Headliner wurden Anfang Dezember EQUILIBRIUM bestätigt, die 2024 zum ersten Mal auf dem Festival zu Gast sein werden. Außerdem sind SCHATTENMANN, THE PRIVATEER sowie SOUL DEMISE mit dabei.

Die Technical Death Metal-Band APOGEAN hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Thousand-Yard Glare” mit “With Which Ear You’ll Listen” ein Lyric-Video ihres kommenden Albums “Cyberstrictive” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Kanadier aus Toronto, die 2021 die mit der EP “Into Madness” debütierten.

“Cyberstrictive” wurde von Zack Ohren gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Mark Erskine ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 8. März 2024 via The Artisan Era.

Endlich ist es da, das Sauwetter, die kalte Zeit, die Dunkelheit. Der lange und viel zu trockene Spätsommer sorgte dafür, dass HEXVESSELs sechstes Album etwas länger im Regal lag, bevor es so richtig zur Geltung kam, doch jetzt ist – pathetisch gesprochen – seine Stunde gekommen. Bei „Polar Veil“ ist der Name Programm und so manch Fan der psychedelisch-dunklen Folksongs der Vergangenheit werden sich verwundert die Frage stellen, ob das noch dieselbe Band ist, die hier spielt. Denn HEXVESSEL begeben sich im Black Metal-Gewand in Richtung Doom Metal – im Vergleich zum vor drei Jahren erschienen „Kindred“ ein gewaltiger Unterschied.

„Polar Veil“ ist deutlich weniger farbenfroh wie sämtliche Vorgänger der Band, und schon gar nicht psychedelisch. Es dominiert ein krasser Gitarrensound, den weder IMPERIAL CRYSTALLINE ENTOMBMENT in jüngster Zeit noch die frostigsten Black Metal-Bands der zweiten Welle damals hinbekommen haben. Das schleppende Tempo des Openers „The Tundra Is Awake“, ist nahe der Mühsal, durch einen Schneesturm zu stapfen. Der Sound lässt erschaudern, ist abschreckend und unheimlich, gerade weil sich Kvohsts Stimme dazwischen emporhebt, wie ein strenger, guter Geist, einem Irrlicht in der Schneeblindheit gleich.

Ein Gitarrensound, bei dem selbst die Protagonisten der zweiten Black Metal-Welle frieren: Mit „Polar Veil“ legen HEXVESSEL einen konsequenten Stilbruch hin.
In der Folge schaffen HEXVESSEL die Transition in einen Black-Doom-Act mit scheinbarer Leichtigkeit: „Older Than The Gods“ atmet echte Erhabenheit und ruht in sich selbst, was durch Okovis (BÖLZER) Gastgebell im Refrain nur noch unterstützt wird und in einem wundervoll harmonischen Finale gipfelt. „Polar Veil“ wird in der Folge noch schroffer und entweltlichter („Listen To The River“ mit CHELSEA WOLFEs Ben Chisholm und „A Cabin In Montana“), auch mal schnell („Eternal Meadows“) oder verströmt den Zauber eines düsteren Märchens („Crepuscular Creatures“).

Mit „Ring“, dessen verschrobener Doom-Part am Ende HEXVESSEL vertraut-kauzig klingen lässt, täuscht „Polar Spirit“ ein entspanntes Finale an, bis das chaotische „Homeward Polar Spirit“ eine echte Herausforderung wird: Die Schichten von Black Metal-Drumming, konträr spielenden Tremolo-Riffs und Kvohsts beruhigendem Gesang fährt nochmal alle Kontraste des Albums auf und erschafft eine eisige Symphonie. Nein, psychedelisch sind HEXVESSEL auf diesem Album nicht, und doch erzeugen sie rauschhafte Soundwände, die einen forttragen aus dem grauen Alltag.

„Polar Veil“ besteht aus rauschhaften Soundwänden, unter denen sich exzellente Songs verstecken – HEXVESSELs Magie ist ungebrochen.
Und genau diese Soundwände müssen erstmal verdaut werden. HEXVESSEL zeigten in der Vergangenheit zwischen aller Blumigkeit gerne die Zähne, doch stets höchstens marginal metallisch. Wer sich durch „Polar Veil“ von dem finnischen Gespann entfremdet fühlt, dem sei gutes Sitzfleisch gewünscht. Hinter der knarzigen und eiskalten Soundwand versteckt sich in jedem Song die typische HEXVESSEL-Magie. Die perfekt akzentuierten Synthesizer funktionieren wie Farbtupfer in der Finsternis, die sparsam eingesetzten und umso erhabeneren Gitarrenharmonien wärmen das Herz. Die seltenen Geschwindigkeitsausbrüche dazwischen lockern das Album auf, auch wenn es hier am ehesten droht, wie ein Bruch zu wirken. Immerhin: „Polar Veil“ bietet viel mehr, als es zunächst den Anschein macht.

Die saubere Performance der Band, das Spannungsfeld aus Kvohsts betörendem Gesang und der schroffen Songs, der erstklassige Sound – auch die Drums, in denen viel Raum zu hören ist, sind bemerkenswert – und nicht zuletzt die hervorragenden Songs sorgen dafür, dass das Wagnis „Polar Veil“ aufgeht. HEXVESSEL zeigen sich runderneuert, fangen authentisch Dunkelheit und Kälte ein, ohne den Hoffnungsschimmer missen zu lassen, der Titel „Polar Veil“ ist absolut gerechtfertigt. Das unglaublich schöne Cover von Sperber Illustrationen fängt diese Stimmung aufs Genaueste ein. Das Ergebnis ist HEXVESSELs bisher stringentestes Album. Und es lässt hoffen, dass der Winter nach der Schmelze des jüngsten Schneetreibens schon bald wieder seinen eisigen Griff um diese Welt schließt.

Am 26. Januar 2024 veröffentlichen HIRAES ihr neues Album “Dormant”. Mit einem Clip zur Single “We Owe No One” stellt die Melodic Death Metal-Band um Sängerin Britta Görtz jetzt die zweite Single-Auskopplung aus der Platte vor.

Auch ein Video zu “Through The Storm” ist vorab verfügbar.

Zudem haben HIRAES auch eine Tour zu “Dormant” angekündigt, sie startet ebenfalls am 26. Januar und umfasst 14 Dates.

“In gewisser Weise ist das Video eine Fortsetzung unserer ersten Single ‘Under Fire’ vom letzten Album “Solitary“. Es ist einem Sturm und seiner unbezwingbaren Energie gewidmet. Wir sind megastolz, euch unser zweites Album Dormant zu präsentieren! Das Album wird euch von der ersten Sekunde an mit seiner Intensität packen und nicht mehr loslassen. Wir haben eine Menge Energie, Hingabe und Leidenschaft investiert, um dieses monumentale und melancholische Stück Melodic Death Metal zu erschaffen. Wir haben in den letzten zwei Jahren unzählige Konzerte gegeben, ‘Dormant’ fängt die Energie unserer Live-Auftritte ein und platziert die Songs genau zwischen Herz und Bauch.
