Chicago’s own darkwave trio, French Police, have announced their forthcoming new album, “BULLY,” which will be dropping on January 26, 2024. Along with the announcement of the new LP is also the news that Rolando Donjuan, the maestro of the bass guitar, is back in the fold.

Vocalist Brian Flores doesn’t just sing on this latest record; he confronts his trauma. “This album is dedicated to the bullies of my past,” he says, turning “BULLY” into a narrative of overcoming and empowerment. It’s a bold statement from a band that’s never shied away from facing the shadows or wearing shades in the dark.

Ahead of the album, French Police have recently let loose “Dance to Play,” a single that’s as melodic and haunting as it is dance-laden groove. It’s a synthesis of their darkwave roots and a new, more mature, and nuanced sound and richer in composition, showcasing songcraft on par with greats from the 80s such as Sad Lovers and Giants and The Chameleons.

Das DARK EASTER METAL MEETING geht 2024 in eine neue Runde: Am 30. und 31. März 2024 wird im Münchner Backstage wieder auf drei Bühnen gefeiert, wobei es bei den Acts der beiden Hauptbühnen im Werk sowie in der Halle keine Überschneidungen geben wird. Auftreten sollen insgesamt 32 Bands, darunter auch SYLVAINE, PHANTOM WINTER und SUR AUSTRU.

Weiterhin bestätigt haben die Organisatoren zuvor den Headliner TIAMAT, der zum 35-jährigen Jubiläum ein Best-Of-Set angekündigt hat, sowie SODOM, die ein spezielles “80er Oldschool-Set” vorbereiten werden. Außerdem wurden DEATHRITE, HELLBUTCHER, ANGSTSKRÍG, ASPHAGOR, CIEMRA, FAIR OF THE FORGOTTEN, GRAND CADAVER, BEWITCHED, CULT OF FIRE, PSYCHONAUT 4, KAMPFAR, NOCTE OBDUCTA, THY CATAFALQUE, TAAKE, CHAPEL OF DISEASE, PERCHTA sowie JESAJAH für die neue Auflage gewonnen. Darüber hinaus haben EIS eine besondere Jubiläumsshow angekündigt und spielen das Album “Galeere” in voller Länge.

Auftreten werden außerdem DYMNA LOTVA, BENEDICTION, MORK, NORDJEVEL sowie THEOTOXIN.

After the chart-hitting “The Unknown Path” EP which was released last year, the Spanish electropop act Mondträume is back with an all new 6-track EP, “Heart Machine” on Alfa Matrix. For this occasion founding member Pikotto (aka Jose Ignacio Castaño Marquinez) teamed up with German singer Nicky from the synth pop act N-Frequency.

A first teaser of this collaboration was already available with the track “Pictures Of You” released last Summer by Alfa Matrix on a compilation. Today with “Heart Machine” the ‘new’ Mondträume duo reveals a second song. Also added are 4 new exclusive remixes by Neon Space Men, District 13, Llumen and Elektrostaub of the track “Pictures Of You”.

Das neueste Werk der schwedischen Symphonic Metaller THERION wurde heute über Napalm Records veröffentlicht. Mit „Leviathan III“ schließt Mastermind Christofer Johnsson die Leviathan-Trilogie ab und setzt die über 30-jährige Erfolgsserie der Band fort. Zusammen mit dem neuen Studioalbum liefern THERION eine weitere Single ab. „Nummo“ ist ein rasanter Track mit herrlich harten Gitarrenexplosionen und feinsten klassischen Vocals und Chören. Christofer Johnsson on “Nummo”:
„’Nummo’ is a song about the amphibious fish-like entities in the Dogon religion. We already touched the Dogon religion with the Sirius B title track in 2004, but as it wasn’t much lyrics in that song, it felt the time was right for a revisist and a proper lyric.

In the video clip we try to give an introduction to Dogon ceremonies. We couldn’t afford to pay Nummo in person to appear in the video clip, so we had to make an animation for that.“

Die Symphonic Metal-Band HORRORGRAPHY hat nach “Destiny” mit “Prison” ein weiteres Lyric-Video von ihrem neuen Album “A Knight’s Tale” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Season of Grief” (2018) und “Dramma per Musica” (2020) das dritte Album des 2017 gegründeten Ensembles aus Athen.

“A Knight’s Tale” wurde vom Werk des Schriftstellers Geoffrey Chaucer aus dem 14. Jahrhundert inspiriert. Erschienen ist das Album am 19. Januar 2024 via Wormholedeath.

HORRORGRAPHY sind Bandgründer und Multi-Instrumentalist Dimitris Sakkas (HUMANITY ZERO, SLOUGH OF DESPAIR, DEI UMBRAE) sowie die Sängerinnen und Sänger Katerina Sougklakoy, Sevi Spanou, Jason Tsolakis (DEI UMBRAE), Ligmos und Seek.

Unter dem Banner BLUTGOTT vereint Thomas Gurrath seine drei Bandprojekte DEBAUCHERY, BLOOD GOD sowie BALGEROTH, um sein 20-jähriges Schaffens-Jubiläum zu feiern. Hierfür veröffentlicht der Sänger und Gitarrist das Album “Dragongods” am 9. Februar 2024 via Massacre Records.

Darauf enthalten sind zehn Tracks, die auf drei Discs in jeweils drei unterschiedlichen Versionen zu hören sind. Neben der DEBAUCHERY-Fassung (Death Metal) gibt es eine Interpretation im BALGEROTH-Gewand (Hard Rock) sowie eine als BLOOD GOD-Version (Heavy Metal).

Den DEBAUCHERY-Track “King Of The Killing Zone” gibt es nun als Video bei YouTube. Auch  “Devourer Of Worlds” kann man sich als Clip bei YouTube ansehen.

“Dragongods” erscheint als 3CD-Digipak sowie digital. Die DEBAUCHERY-Ausgabe der Veröffentlichung wird zudem als Vinyl veröffentlicht.

Background/Info: “Tabula Rasa” is the second album by Human Figures which is a project driven by Daniel Lewis aka ‘Daniel Holt’. The work comes two years after “The Recluse Or Death Posture”-album. The work is also available on cassette format which has been released by Dead Channel Records.

Content: Human Figures sounds mainly Dark-Wave driven revealing 80s guitar playing and dark atmospheres. A few more cuts are more into Electro sound treatments, evoking the good-old years of Cold-Wave characterized by icy strings.

+ + + : This project avoids any innovation but sounds as a cool extension of the 80s Dark/Cold-Wave movement. I like the 80s Electro minimalism of the instrumental “Conclusions Are Nil”. “Military School” is another enjoyable cut carried by icy leads and reminding me a bit of Minimal Compact. The more classical Dark-Wave / Post-Punk songs like “Obedience” and “Disparage” are noticeable songs as well featuring haunting vocals on top.

– – – : The work is maybe missing a little bit more elaboration although the sound perfectly evokes the early 80s experiments in Dark/Cold-Wave music.

Conclusion: This band brings the dark spirit of the 80s back alive and I even would think the sound was originally composed back then. 

Best songs: “Conclusions Are Nil”, “Military School”, “Obedience”, “Disparage”.

Die Power Doom Metal-Band DISTORTED REFLECTION hat mit “Doom Rules Eternally” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album des griechischen Trios, welches aus Drummer Stelios Pavlou (SORROWFUL ANGELS, RHODIUM, Ex-BOB KATSIONIS), Gitarrist und Sänger Kostas Salomidis (Ex-SORROWS PATH) sowie Bassist und Synthesizer Vangelis Yalamas (FRAGILE VASTNESS) besteht.

“Doom Rules Eternally” wird am 9. Februar 2024 via Iron Shield Records erscheinen.

AMON AMARTH haben ein neues Musikvideo veröffentlicht: “Saxons And Vikings” gibt es bei YouTube. Als Gast ist zudem Biff Byford (SAXON) zu hören.

„Insgesamt ist ‚The Great Heathen Army‘ eines unserer härteren Alben”, versprach AMON AMARTH-Sänger Johan Hegg im Vorfeld. “Es gibt einige düstere und harte Songs, die wirklich kraftvoll und direkt sind, aber es gibt natürlich auch einige typische melodische AMON AMARTH-Songs und auch ein paar Überraschungen. Es ist ein wirklich gut ausbalanciertes Album. Es klingt phänomenal. Andy Sneap ist großartig. Und es war fantastisch, wieder mit ihm arbeiten zu können.“

Reinhören kann man außerdem in “Heidrun” sowie “Oden Owns You All”, die vierte Single des Albums, zu dem es auch einen Clip bei YouTube gibt.

Zuletzt gab es im August die dritte Single “Find A Way Or Make One“, zu der die Schweden ein Musikvideo produziert haben. Anfang Juli teilte die Band auch den Titeltrack: AMON AMARTH hatten ein Video zu “The Great Heathen Army” veröffentlicht.

Gitarrist Olavi Mikkonen fügt hinzu: „Wir waren weg, um neue Musik zu machen, und wir sind zurück mit einem neuen, dunkleren, mehr nach Death Metal klingenden Album. Wenn ‚Berserker‘ unser ‚Heavy Metal‘-Album war, dann ist ‚The Great Heathen Army‘ unser ‚Death Metal‘-Album. Es ist aber trotzdem immer noch ein sehr zeitgemäßes Amon Amarth Album, aber vielleicht sind wir stilistisch ein wenig zu unseren Wurzeln zurückgekehrt.“

Die Punk Rock-Band SUM 41 wird ihr finales Album “Heaven :x: Hell” am 22. März 2024 via Rise Records veröffentlichen. Bereits im Frühjahr 2023 gaben die Kanadier bekannt, dass sie nach 27 Jahren getrennte Wege gehen werden.

Die Progressive Death Metal-Band CARNOSUS hat einen Labeldeal bei Willowtip Records unterschrieben. Der Deal sieht unter anderem den Release eines neuen und dritten Albums der Schweden vor. Zuvor hat die 2011 gegründete Band aus Örebro die Alben “Dogma of the Deceased” (2020) und “Visions of Infinihility” (2023) veröffentlicht. Für das neue Album arbeitet die Band mit Produzent Robert Kukla in den Obsidian Recording Studios zusammen.

CARNOSUS sind Sänger Jonatan Karasiak, die Gitarristen Rickard Persson und Marcus Jokela Nyström, Bassist Marcus Strindlund sowie Drummer Jacob Hedner.

Die Technical Death Metal-Band COGNIZANCE hat nach “The Towering Monument” mit “Shadowgraph” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Phantazein” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Malignant Dominion” (2019) und “Upheaval” (2021) das dritte Album der Engländer aus Leeds.

“Phantazein” ist ein Konzeptalbum, das sich mit dem komplizierten Zusammenspiel von Kunst, Besessenheit und dem tiefgreifenden Einfluss der eigenen Umgebung beschäftigt. Das Album wurde von Ronnie Björnström (MEZZROW, Ex-BONE GNAWER) gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Dan P Carter (KROKODIL, HEXES, Ex-BLOODHOUND GANG) ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 26. Januar 2024 via Willowtip Records.

COGNIZANCE sind Sänger Henry Pryce, die Gitarristen Alex Baillie (X3N0X) und Apostolis “Yage” Karydis, Bassist Chris Binns (KROKODIL) sowie Drummer David Diepold (OBSCURA).

The British experimental post-punk band Abrasive Trees, consisting of members Matthew Rochford and Ben Roberts, who are known for their work with the Bella Union project Silver Moth, have teamed up with a group of local professionals and producer Pete Fletcher from the Isle of Lewis to create a 20-minute cinematic experience. This experience showcases two new tracks, Star Sapphire and Tao To Earth, that have not yet been released but are just as intriguing as their names suggest.

Melding a dash of 1960s psychedelia with elements plucked right from England’s ‘pleasant pastures green,’ the Abrasive Trees sound like stepping into the world of a pastoral poem, only to find that the lute player has been replaced by a reverb-mad electric guitarist. There’s a perfect synergy at work here: a veritable picnic where cucumber sandwiches meet psychedelic blacklight posters. In this musical alchemy, the ancient and modern not only coexist but dance together in harmonious step.

But that’s not all! The film also includes a live rendition of Kali Sends Sunflowers, interspersed with interview snippets guided by music journalist Andy Hill. And to add a cherry on top, visual artist Jess Wooller’s visuals are woven throughout, offering a glimpse into the band’s current artistic voyage. One can only imagine the delightful conversations and creative sparks that flew in that old mill, as Abrasive Trees set out to capture their musical exploits in a way that’s sure to be as refreshing as a brisk walk in the countryside.

“We’d aspired to create this film after meeting earlier this year to discuss what we could and couldn’t do – given our commitments to all of our other creative projects,” says Rochford. “We had considered going into a recording studio but decided to do something completely different and release some of our new material in this way. Somehow it all came together with the right people at the right time and the right place. We received financial and practical backing from the Abrasive Trees community – so it’s a genuinely crowdfunded project.”

In addition to being part of their local creative scene, Abrasive Trees have worked with members of Fields of The Nephilim, Rothko, Pulled By Magnets, and Jo Beth Young. Their last EP was produced by Lucy and Matthew Board from Pale Blue Eyes.

Mit “Zeppelin” wird in wenigen Tagen das neue Album der NWOBHM-Band STUKA SQUADRON erscheinen. Es ist nach “Tales of the Ost” (2011) das zweite Album der Engländer aus London.

“Zeppelin” wird am 15. Dezember 2023 via Metal on Metal Records erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach dem Lyric-Video zu “Angel of Mons” nun auch den Titeltrack zu hören.

(Photo via MaximoTV) Los Angeles has declared December 13 as Depeche Mode Day at the City Hall. The day honors the band’s impact on the city’s music scene.

Depeche Mode’s relationship with Los Angeles and the KROQ radio station is a very special one. All started in the 1980s, with KROQ playing a pivotal role in promoting the band in the city. Another iconic moment was the Music for the Masses Tour, which ended with a concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in 1988. The whole was documented in the concert film “101” by D.A. Pennebaker. It is Alan Wilder who came up with the album’s title; the performance was the 101st and final performance of the tour (and coincidentally also the number of a famous highway in the area). The band’s performance on June 18, 1988 was attended by approximately 60,453 people. This attendance was a record at that time for the venue.

Forward to 1990 with the famous Depeche Mode riot at Wherehouse Records in Los Angeles. This in-store signing, sponsored by KROQ of course, drew an unexpectedly large crowd of over 20,000 fans, leading to a chaotic situation where the police had to intervene.

The band later released a special promo cassette featuring a band interview and “Something to Do (Metal Mix)”, which was previously unreleased in America, as a gesture to the fans who had attended the event. This cassette was distributed through KROQ.

In a speech councilwoman Monica Rodriguez expressed her gratitude to the attendees, recognizing Depeche Mode’s enduring influence in Los Angeles. Band members Martin Gore and Dave Gahan were present at the event. Gore delivered a brief speech reflecting on the band’s special connection with Los Angeles, noting the early support from KROQ radio station and recalling their first headline stadium show in the city. He also mentioned the Wherehouse Records riot in 1990, an event that gained national attention and inadvertently boosted the band’s profile. Dave Gahan from his side added a lighter note, jokingly wishing for such support during the band’s earlier days.

Die Industrial Metal-Band HAND OF JUNO hat mit “We’ve Built The Line” eine neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Der Song untersucht die persönlichen und gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen von emotionalen und ideologischen Spaltungen und sei eine Reflexion über die menschliche Tendenz, emotionale Barrieren zum Selbstschutz zu errichten.

Vor einigen Wochen ist mit “Destroy The Line” eine weitere Single mitsamt Video-Clip erschienen. Der Song ist Teil einer Reihe von Singles, die in einer imaginären apokalyptischen Welt spielen, die von einer rücksichtslosen Macht der Superreichen beherrscht wird.

“Wir haben dieses Lied als Metapher für die heutige Gesellschaft geschrieben”, sagt Sängerin Melissa Bruschi. “Es liegt an uns, alle Vorurteile zu zerstören, die uns trennen, und unsere Stimmen gegen die Ungerechtigkeiten zu erheben, die wir jeden Tag sehen. Die Grande Dame des Gothic Rock meldet sich zurück und zusammen mit ihrem Kollegen Paul Roessler vom GITANE DEMONE QUARTET wandelt sie diesmal auf eher klassischen Pfaden im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Thematisch beschäftigen sich das Album mit dem Tod, Trauer und Abschied, was gleichzeitig eine Hommage an ihre Freunde Rozz Williams (CHRISTIAN DEATH) und Darby Crash (GERMS) ist, die beide durch Selbstmord aus dem Leben geschieden sind. Diese tragischen Schicksalsschläge verarbeiten Gitane Demone (CHRISTIAN DEATH) und Paul Roessler (45GRAVE, THE SCREAMERS) mittels einer beklemmend-bedrückenden Klassik-Kammermusik-Suite namens „The New Young Kings Of Midnight“ in 7 Akten. Anfangs erscheint das knapp halbstündige Werk sehr sperrig und offenbart erst nach einigen Durchläufen zwischen Paul Roesslers recht dissonanten Streicher-Harmonie-Verläufen und der emotionalen Gesangsdarbietung von Gitane Demone seine dunkel-plüschige Würde und Größe. „The New Young Kings Of Midnight“ ist definitiv keine leichte Kost, aber dem schweren Thema angemessen und das Cover-Artwork im Stile der Deutschen Grammophon ebenfalls. Die Black / Industrial Metal-Band SAMAEL hat für 16. Februar 2024 ein neues Live-Album angekündigt. “Passage – Live” wurde während der Jubiläumstour zum Album “Passage” (1996) in Krakau aufgenommen. Vorab gibt es nun auch ein Lyrics-Video zu Liverversion von “Moonskin”.

Bereits im Dezember veröffentlichten die Schweizer das Stück “Jupiterian Vibe” als Mitschnitt bei YouTube. Die Formation teilt zur Veröffentlichung mit:

It seems the appetite of the fans for live performances from SLEEP TOKEN in Germany is pretty insatiable, as the third show within 12 months sold out in a heartbeat. The genre-defying superstars of Alternative Metal, Post-Rock, Progressive Metal, Indie Rock as well as Ambient, with traces of Tech Metal, Djent, Pop, and R&B around the mysteriously masked singer Vessel have definitely mastered the secret sauce of attracting their young, and predominantly female audience. This could very well be observed in front of the Palladium, as a long line of people matching that description stretching out for hundreds of meters waited excitedly to be let into the venue.

The power of four chords, catchy melodies, and lots of beer thrown into the mix is such a thing. And nobody masters this combination better than FEINE SAHNE FISCHFILET. Authenticity and honesty have always been a top priority for the band, their “making themselves straight” even in the face of headwinds, their constant offensive stepping out of their comfort zone even when it hurts, their unconditional sincerity combined with a stage presence that is second to none, all this has made FEINE SAHNE FISCHFILET one of the biggest and most important rock bands in the German-speaking world. Their followers love them dearly for it. And they came out in numbers on this rainy Tuesday evening in Cologne to celebrate their heroes.

Die Ambient Black Metal-Band DARKSPACE hat mit “Dark Space -II” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das fünfte Album des Schweizer Trios, welches aus Tobias “Wroth” Möckl (PAYSAGE D´HIVER), Zhaaral (SUN OF THE BLIND) und Yhs besteht, und wird am 16. Februar 2024 via Season of Mist erscheinen.

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band GHOUL hat mit “Noxious Concoctions” eine neue EP angekündigt. Die Scheibe folgt auf das bislang letzte (und fünfte) Album “Dungeon Bastards” (2016) nach.

“Noxious Concoctions” wurde gemeinsam mit Scott Evans bei Antisleep Audio und in den Sharkbite Studios aufgenommen und von Dan Randall gemastert. Erscheinen wird die EP am 2. Februar 2024 via Tankcrimes. Vorab gibt es den Titeltrack zu hören.

Die Heavy / True Metal-Band ALL FOR METAL hat 2022 einen Plattenvertrag mit AFM Records abgeschlossen. Das Debütalbum “Legends” erschien am 7. Juli 2023 über das neue Label. Nun teilte die Gruppe einen Clip zum Song “Run” bei YouTube.

Zuletzt gab es mit “Goddess of War” einen weiteren Video-Clip. Zuvor erschien das Video “Legends Never Die” bei YouTube.

Davor präsentierte man mit “Mountain Of Power” sowie “Raise Your Hammer” den dritten und vierten neuen Song als Musikvideo bei YouTube. Die zweite Single “Born In Valhalla” kann man sich ebenfalls als Clip bei YouTube ansehen, außerdem gibt es auch ein ein Video “Fury Of The Gods”.

Ein Musikvideo zur Debütsingle “All For Metal” steht auch via YouTube auf Abruf bereit. Sänger Antonio Calanna kommentiert:

„Ich freue mich so sehr über dieses Debüt, es fühlt sich an, als hätte ich noch nie zuvor gesungen und als stünde ich das erste Mal vor Publikum! Diese kraftvollen Riffs und die großartige Bindung zwischen Tetzel und mir machen deutlich, wofür wir gekommen sind… Genau diese Energie wollen wir auf die Bühne bringen und der Welt zeigen, wozu wir fähig sind! ‘All For Metal’ könnte kein besserer Song dazu sein: Feuer, Schweiß, Melodie und auf der Suche nach dem Machbaren. Die französische Modern Metal- / Metalcore-Band NOVELISTS präsentiert einen weiteren neuen Song mit einem Visualizer-Clip: “Mourning The Dawn” bei YouTube.

Das Stück folgt auf das Musikvideo “Prisoner” bei YouTube.

Zudem kommt die Formation im Februar 2024 auf Headliner-Tour durch Europa. Als Support mit dabei sind THE WORD ALIVE, ELWOOD STRAY sowie ASHEN.

Erst seit September 2023  sind NOVELISTS überhaupt wieder komplett: Den vakanten Posten am Mikro – im Frühjahr 2023 trennte sie die Formation von Tobias Rische – übernimmt seitdem Sängerin Camille Contreras, die in der Vergangenheit bereits beim Titeltrack des Album “C’est la vie” (2020) ein Gast-Feature beisteuerte. NOVELISTS erklären:

“Camille war die unerwartete Rettungsleine, die wir dringend brauchten. Ihr Talent und ihre Energie haben Novelists in einer Zeit, in der wir am Tiefpunkt waren, wiederbelebt. Es ist unglaublich, wie die richtige Person unseren Weg kreuzte, als wir sie am meisten brauchten. Wir sind begeistert, die neue und endgültige Iteration von Novelists vorzustellen und sind unheimlich stolz auf die Musik, die wir gemeinsam geschaffen haben und die das Beste unserer Reise darstellt.”

Die neue Ära läutete das Quintett mit der Single “Turn It Up” ein, zu der man auch ein Musikvideo produziert hat.

It’s chilly in the Big Apple, so it was wonderful to uncover a lovely set of FootClothes socks to pair with your creepers and Docs. This well-made, sturdy hosiery is cozy and stylish: mine had a nice haunted cathedral emblazoned on them, perfect for chasing spectral organ players who dwell in the catacombs of the opera house, or lurking in the rolling hills of Green-Wood Cemetery.

A few more goodies were thrown in there, including a Lip Service sticker and postcard offering a 10% discount, and a sticker from Gothic Beauty Magazine. 

This would certainly make a good Christmas gift, whether you are new to the scene, or a Goth parent.
