Die Blackened Power Metal-Band THE LIGHTBRINGER hat mit dem Lyric-Video zu “Astral Crown” eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums “Seven Thrones” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Quintessence of Dawn” (2010) und “Heptanity” (2017) das dritte Album der Kanadier aus Q.

“Seven Thrones” wurde von Sänger und Bassit Olivier Vaillancourt-Girard im Holywaves Studio produziert. Weitere Band-Mitglieder sind Sänger Stanislav Stefanovski, Gitarrist und Schlagzeuger Simon Vaillancourt-Girard sowie Sängerin Fanny Grenier.

Das Cover-Artwork vom neuen Album, das am 22. März 2024 erscheinen wird, stammt von Harshanand Singh.

(Photo by Knut Åserud) Good news from Norway as the cult band Bel Canto will release an all new album on April 26th, called “Radiant Green“. “Radiant Green” comes after more than two decades of studio silence since their last album “Dorothy’s Victory” already dates from 2002.

“Radiant Green” will be out digitally and on CD and double vinyl. The material was mixed by Matias Tellez and Gilles Martin. For Martin it means his comeback after having produced the first 3 albums of the band, the last being “Shimmering, Warm & Bright” from 1992. Martin’s production helped establish Bel Canto’s distinctive sound in the early days.

About Bel Canto

Bel Canto, originally a trio but now a duo, features Anneli Drecker as the lead vocalist and was initially under the Crammed Discs label.

The ensemble originated in Tromsø in 1985, established by Geir Jenssen (handling synthesizers and programming), Nils Johansen (playing synthesizer, violin, bass, and guitar), alongside vocalist Anneli Drecker. Their musical influences span a wide range, including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), David Bowie, artists from 4AD, Clannad, Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, David Sylvian, Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), Ryuichi Sakamoto, Depeche Mode, and the Blue Nile.

Following their second album, “Birds of Passage” (1990), Jenssen departed to pursue a successful solo career as Biosphere, leaving Drecker and Johansen to achieve a commercial breakthrough with “Shimmering, Warm and Bright” in 1992. By this time, their music had transitioned from ethereal dream electropop to a synth-based pop sound enriched with world music elements.

Anneli Drecker occasionally paused her involvement with Bel Canto to focus on solo projects and collaborations with other artists and bands, including Röyksopp and a-ha, in addition to her work in film and theater. Nils Johansen, meanwhile, composed music for film and television and continued his involvement with his other band, Vajas.

In 2007, following a reunion concert in Oslo, Side-Line interviewed the original members, who revealed they were working on a new album, although tensions were apparent. Ultimately, Geir Jenssen left the band once more, and the project was left unfinished.

Singer Damo Suzuki, a member of the pioneering Krautrock band Can, has died at the age of 74.  Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit, and Holger Czukay preceded Suzuki in death. Suzuki had been suffering from colon cancer for a decade, but the cause of his death has not been made public.

Kenji Suzuki was born in Japan on 16 January 1950, and spent his teenage years as a street busker in Europe. By 1968, the avant-garde ensemble CAN had formed in Cologne by Holger Czukay, Irmin Schmidt, Michael Karoli, and Jaki Liebezeit. Suzuki’s path intersected with CAN in 1970, after a chance encounter in Munich led to an impromptu performance with the band. His improvisational skills secured him a place in the group. Suzuki’s initial foray into vocals was marked by the track Don’t Turn the Light On, Leave Me Alone from the album Soundtracks, but he also heavily contributed to their groundbreaking albums Tago Mago, Ege BamyasÄ�, and Future Days.

Can’s fusion of psychedelic rock, avant-garde, and electronic elements heralded the birth of Krautrock. CAN was, for all intents and purposes, the Velvet Underground of the Iron Curtain. Their innovation stemmed from a nation grappling with the shadows of history and a deep-seated fear of its own cultural identity. Can transcended these traditional confines and challenged the status quo, cherry picking from a myriad of artists: Karlheinz Stockhausen; Frank Zappa…and particularly for Suzuki, The Kinks. His choice to deviate from conventional norms underscored Suzuki’s artistic trajectory: his ethos of seeking out the new and the unconventional not only defined Can’s legacy but also shaped Suzuki’s tastes.

CAN’s belief in the transformative power of music, imagination and culture redefined West German rock music and, along with Kraftwerk, would go on to inform punk, electronic music, hip-hop, and post-punk. Suzuki’s brilliantly unconventional vocals were characterized by a freeform method, where his lyrics transcended the confines of any single language. In 1973, Suzuki parted ways with Can, taking a hiatus for the next decade.

Suzuki resumed his musical career in 1983, leading the innovative Damo Suzuki’s Network. With this project, he embraced live, improvisational performances, collaborating with Sound Carriers, a term for the local musicians he played with at each tour stop. This approach underscored his commitment to spontaneity and collective music-making. From 1997 until his passing, Suzuki continued to tour and perform, either with his network or in standalone gigs.

Can’s innovative sound has left an indelible mark on a wide array of artists, including David Bowie, Talking Heads, Joy Division, Jesus & Mary Chain,  Radiohead, and PIL. His influence was acknowledged in The Fall’s 1985 album This Nation’s Saving Grace, which featured I Am Damo Suzuki. Mark E. Smith, The Fall’s frontman and an avowed admirer, further explored this influence in his techno endeavor with Mouse On Mars, known as Von Südenfed, which drew heavily on Can’s legacy.

Suzuki’s life took a personal turn in Cologne when he met Elke Morsbach in 1985, who would become his wife. In 2014, Suzuki faced a significant health challenge when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. This period of his life, marked by his struggle with the illness and his relationship with Morsbach, was captured in the documentary Energy, which delves into Suzuki’s resilience and the support system surrounding him during this difficult time.

“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our wonderful friend Damo Suzuki, yesterday, Friday 9 February 2024,” the remaining members of Can stated. “His boundless creative energy has touched so many over the whole world, not just with Can, but also with his all continent spanning Network Tour. Damo’s kind soul and cheeky smile will be forever missed….He will be joining Michael, Jaki and Holger for a fantastic jam!”

Over the last eighteen years, the post-punk band Twin Peaks (distinct from the American indie rock group and the famous TV show, though they might well trade in the series’ iconic coffee and pie for cherry bliny and compote) has seen a remarkable transformation. Originating from Kotovsk in Russia’s Tambov Oblast, their musical journey started with hardcore punk and grunge. It has since evolved into a sophisticated blend of post-punk and new-wave sounds. The band’s core lineup, consisting of Konstantin Kirpu, Denis Terekhov, Egor Tikhonov, and Dimitry Vasyatkin, has been instrumental in shaping this evolution.

Their music, characterized by a poignant sense of melancholy and nostalgia, resonates with the universal themes of lost love and the fleeting nature of youth. Embodying the introspective and exploratory spirit suggested by their name, Twin Peaks’ latest visual offering for Death Girl invites audiences on a journey through the intricate landscapes of the human psyche.

In her latest cinematic endeavor, director Olga Feona delves into the complexities of nascent love and the introspection of personal ethos, set against the unlikely yet visually arresting backdrop of a renowned tattoo parlor’s basement. Feona’s work is distinguished by the enigmatic performances of two tenebrous women, their movements a haunting ballet under the stark illumination of strobe lights, crafting a visual cascade of light and shadow that perfectly harmonizes with the pulsing of the new wave soundtrack.

The production spanned an ambitious six months, transforming the parlor into a stage of temporal ambiguity with an assemblage of vintage televisions and a constellation of lights. Amidst this carefully curated chaos, the filming coincided with the shoots of the band, adding a layer of surrealism as the days alternated.

With a discography that includes three albums, ten singles, and three music videos, Twin Peaks has maintained a prominent presence on the airwaves both within Russia and internationally. Drawing heavily from influences KINO, The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy, and Depeche Mode, emotions overcome all language barriers.

This new wave version of Девочка-Смерть (Death Girl) was released last year as part of the single “Болезнь,” which translates to “Disease” in English.

The song’s original version was presented in 2015 on Twin Peaks’ second album, Boy and Cloud, but eight years later, the group decided to radically change the sound of the track towards post-punk and synth-pop.

ENSLAVED veröffentlichten im Frühjahr 2023 ihr 16. Studioalbum: “Heimdal“, so der Titel, ist seit 3. März 2023 erhältlich. Jetzt haben Band und Label eine Neuauflage der Platte angekündigt: “Heimdal (Deluxe)” erscheint am 1. März 2024 ausschließlich digital und enthält neben der regulären Platte den Bonus-Track “Gangandi” sowie zwei alternative Versionen der Stücke “Congelia” und “Forest Dweller”, bei welchen Cellistin Jo Quail zu hören ist. Außerdem enthalten ist das Streaming-Konzert “The Otherworldly Big Band Experience”, das 2022 in Zusammenarbeit mit der Prog-Band SHAMAN ELEPHANT aufgeführt wurde.

Reinhören kann man jetzt auch in die neue Version von “Forest Dewller” .

Bereits im Herbst 2021 veröffentlichten ENSLAVED die EP ‘Caravans To The Outer Worlds‘, der Titelsong ist ebenfalls auf dem neuen Album “Heimdal” zu hören, ein Video kann man bei YouTube ansehen. Ende Dezember folgte ‘Congelia’ mit einem Video als zweite Single.

“Es fühlt sich ziemlich seltsam, aber auch ziemlich gut an, über die Veröffentlichung unseres 16 Studioalbums zu sprechen. Nicht schlecht für ein  paar Typen aus dem ländlichen Westnorwegen, oder? Wenn man unsere Zeit in der kurzlebigen Band PHOBIA mitzählt, spielen wir seit nicht weniger als 32 Jahren zusammen!

In all diesen Jahren war die nordische Mythologie unsere Nabelschnur zu Mystik und Philosophie und unser Tor zu Tiefenpsychologie und esoterischen Welten. Eine der faszinierendsten Gestalten unserer Mythologie ist HEIMDAL, der seit nunmehr drei Jahrzehnten wie ein Rätsel in unseren Köpfen herumgeistert. Zum ersten Mal tauchte er 1992 in einem Song namens “Heimdallr” auf unserem Demotape “Yggdrasill” auf, und im Laufe der Jahre hat er sowohl kleinere als auch größere Rollen in unserem lyrischen Universum gespielt.

Diesmal haben wir beschlossen, diesem rätselhaftesten aller Charaktere und reichsten aller Archetypen ein ganzes Werk zu widmen: “HEIMDAL”. As always there were a lot of debut albums on the dark scene. Some debuts did not even make it into the contenders, because they were made by musicians, who published material in other projects in the same genre as the new one. However, there was plenty of fresh new sound with unconventional approaches and variations in 2023, which indicates that the dark scene is developing and is not stuck.

Schon der Titel dieses Albums ist schwindelerregend. „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ stellt gleich klar, um was es CHELSEA WOLFE geht: Zyklisches Denken, Heilung und Erneuerung stehen im Zentrum des achten Albums der Kalifornierin, die in den letzten Jahren vor allem mit der Kollaboration „Bloodmoon: I“ mit CONVERGE, dem Punkprojekt MRS. PISS und dem Soundtrack zu „X“ präsent war. Passenderweise hat sie diese Phase abgeschlossen und kann sich wieder auf ihre eigene Karriere konzentrieren und ihr neue Impulse geben. „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ schenkt ihrem Oeuvre eine einerseits neue, andererseits vertraute Facette, die maßgeschneidert für die Musikerin.

Weder semi-akustisch noch metallisch: CHELSEA WOLFEs musikalische Facette auf „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ ist elektronisch geprägt – und steht ihr ausgezeichnet.
So richtig wollte sich CHELSEA WOLFE noch nie fassen lassen. Es war immer ein wenig, als würde sie sich verstecken, hinter ihren Soundwänden, mit ihrer manchmal so zerbrechlich wirkenden Stimme, mit ihren traumartigen musikalischen Landschaften. Passend dazu vermeidet sie einen Personenkult um sich selbst, und bleibt doch stets im Zentrum der Musik- und Bilderwelt, die sie kreiert. Dass es nicht immer leicht ist, auf diese Art bei sich zu bleiben und das Niveau zu halten, versteht sich fast von selbst. Entsprechend blieben das Sludgige „Hiss Spun“ und das Semi-Akustik-Album „Birth Of Violence“, das zumindest einige bemerkenswerte Momente besaß, hinter den haushohen Erwartungen zurück.

„She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ fokussiert sich nun auf elektronische Elemente in den verschiedensten Stilrichtungen. Mal Industrial, mal Trip Hop, mal Ambient, mal Drone, mal sogar als klassische Popsängerin, CHELSEA WOLFE limitiert sich nicht, sondern hat ihren Forschergeist, der in den letzten beiden Alben abhandengekommen war, wiederentdeckt. Mit „Whispers In The Echo Chamber“ beginnt das Album brodelnd und bedrohlich, vor allem wenn die Gitarren einsetzen. Auch wenn „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ nicht heavy wirkt, es ist eine Menge Heaviness in den zehn Songs versteckt.

Es knistert in den Songs von „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“: CHELSEA WOLFE performt intensiv und persönlich.
Am auffälligsten ist das noch bei „House Of Self-Undoing“, mit dem treibenden Drumming und seiner nervösen Aura. Besonders gut funktioniert CHELSEA WOLFEs achtes Album, wenn die elektronischen Elemente dominieren, sodass die Gitarren nur noch Beiwerk sind. Denn „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ ist umwerfend gut produziert: Die Stimme, selbst wenn sie sich aus dem Vordergrund löst und eher schwebend jenseits der Musik zu existieren scheint, ist zentral auf diesem Album. Was klingt wie ein Gegensatz, funktioniert exzellent. „Everything Turns Blue“ und „Tunnel Lights“ arbeiten ausgezeichnet nach diesem Muster. Und passend dazu gibt es viel Lebendigkeit und Dynamik: „The Liminal“ und „Unseen World“ haben jeweils ein erhabenes Finale. Das funktioniert auch in den rein elektronischen Songs ausgezeichnet: „Eyes Like Nightshade“ und „Salt“ lassen, jedes Stück auf seine Art, wohlige Schau über den Rücken laufen.

CHELSEA WOLFE versteht es, die Spannungsschraube anzuziehen, ohne dass der emotionale Unterbau der Musik leidet: Laut-Leise-Taschenspielertricks sind auf „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ nicht zu hören. Zusammen mit ihrem musikalischen Langzeitpartner Ben Chisholm wird eine musikalische Welt erschaffen, die vertraut ist, aber durch Produzent Dave Sitek sehr zeitgemäß und geschmackvoll realisiert wurde. So passt auch wunderbar eine Semi-Popballade wie „Place In The Sun“ ins Gesamtkonzept und schafft es, zu begeistern, mehr noch: Hier rührt CHELSEA WOLFE sogar zu Tränen, bevor das Album hermetisch mit „Dusk“ endet, wie es begonnen hat – nur befreiter, größer, strahlender.

Rauschhaft schön und geheimnisvoll: „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ ist eines der großen Alben in CHELSEA WOLFEs Karriere.
CHELSEA WOLFE entdeckt die eigene Musik mit jedem Album neu und behält dabei ihren Charakter. Das ist es, was eine reife Musikerin auszeichnet. Bedauerlich, dass ihre Alben „Hiss/Spun“ und „Birth Of Violence“ ihrem bisherigen Niveau nicht gerecht werden konnten. Umso schöner, dass „She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She“ nach einer, vielleicht bitternötigen, Sturm und Drang-Zeit CHELSEA WOLFEs mit anderen Projekten, mindestens das beste Album seit „Abyss“ darstellt. Die kalifornische Klangmagierin durchdringt Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft und erschafft auf diese Art wieder so rauschhaft schöne und geheimnisvolle Musik, wie zu ihren besten Zeiten.

Die österreichische Thrash Metal-Band UZZIEL hat mit einem Video zu „Captured By Emptiness“ eine neue Single veröffentlicht.

Mit dem remasterten Track legt die Band “den Grundstein für ihren musikalischen Neuanfang”: ‘Captured By Emptiness’ ist das Labeldebüt von UZZIEL auf NRT-Records, folgen sollen der remasterte Backkatalog mit den Alben “Torn Apart” (erschienen 2015) und “This Fear” (erschienen 2019) sowie das dritten Album der Band.

Last Chance is the musical endeavor of DJ Dimitris Papaspyropoulos, renowned for his “Last Chance” remixes that gained popularity on his radio show and through a best-selling compilation series.

Beginning his career as a radio producer at Klik FM from 1996 to 2001, he later transitioned to Best 926, where he continued until 2012. Beyond the airwaves, Papaspyropoulos is celebrated for hosting the highly acclaimed “Last Chance” parties.

His latest work includes a mesmerizing cover version of the haunting Goodbye Horses by Q. Lazzarus, famously featured in Silence of the Lambs. Denis & Eli lend their vocal talents, staying true to the original’s essence but also evoking the eerier cover done by Psyche. This remix was created in homage to Q Lazzarus, William Garvey and Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme, who have all since ‘passed into the night.’

“A myth, that takes us back in the late 80s, accompanies both one of the most cult songs of recent years and its performer, Q Lazzarus,” he says. “It was only a matter of time before I attempted to cover one of my most favorite songs.”

Papaspyropoulos has remixed Peter Gabriel’s Games Without Frontiers, as well as conceived and compiled ten best-seller CD compilations released from 1999 until today. He is the producer of Transistor’s debut Things You Miss When You Blink (2008) and also the music director of the play Medea by Jean Anouilh at Altera Pars Theater. His first EP “the midget” featuring Craig Walker (ex Archive) on vocals was released on November 25, 2013.

In the realms of the arcane, a necromancer appears as a figure both intriguing and contentious, where the boundary between the living and the departed is intricately navigated. These practitioners summon spirits and animate the deceased for a variety of purposes, from divination to the more macabre reclamation of souls to serve their cryptic objectives.

Within this mystical landscape, Yvette Winkler of Vaselyne assumes a particularly powerful role, her artistry in the song Necromancer track from the band’s titular Necromancer EP, capturing the essence of this dark art. Accompanied by Clan of Xymox alum Frank Weyzig’s haunting lead vocals, Winkler’s harmonies add an ethereal quality, crafting a séance-like experience. The extraordinary video, with choreography by Savea Kagan and directed by Dennis Overeem of Buddy Film Productions, transforms these ancient rituals into a mesmerizing performance, where dancers embody spirits, their movements weaving spells to bridge worlds. This art form becomes a conduit for resurrection, as each step and gesture summons the dead, blending the mystical with the physical in a captivating display of power and grace.

“For the video, I envisioned myself as the Necromancer, a sort of witch surrounded by a coven,” reveals Winkler. “The coven is an extension of myself; I control their movements. And I inhabit Frank’s psyche. Yet, am I a construct of his mind, a tangible presence, or merely a figment of his imagination? Could I be a manifestation of his delusion—possessed, afflicted by mental illness, consumed by obsession, or merely a fleeting dream? All the eerie elements intertwine within this vision.”

Vaselyne’s ‘Necromancer‘ EP stands as a milestone in their artistic journey, showcasing their evolved prowess through an enthralling soundscape from the first note to the last. Their rendition of ‘The Doomed‘ by A Perfect Circle is nothing short of spectacular, with Yvette leading a powerful reinterpretation that marries grandeur with opulence. WOLVES OF PERDITION versuchen von Finnland aus mit ihrem Black Metal zu überzeugen, der eher schwedisch/norwegisch daherkommt.
Vor genau 3 Jahren haben sie mit ihrem Debüt „Ferocious Blasphemic Warfare“ schon im Untergrund zu punkten gewusst. Jetzt wird, abermals über Folter Recrods, nachgelegt.
Bei finnischem Black Metal habe ich immer ziemlich genaue Vorstellungen, was natürlich eigentlich Quatsch ist. Aber da schwebt mir ein bestimmtr Sound, bestimmte Melodien und immer das gewisse Etwas Chaos im Hinterkopf. Davon ist bei WOLVES OF PERDITION nicht besonders viel zu hören. Was natürlich nicht negativ ist, mir aber direkt auffällt.
Die Melodien sind eher schwedisch angelegt und norwegische Einflüsse höre ich auch mehr als eigentlich aus dem Land der Elche.
Wenn man mit Bandnamen um sich werfen möchte, könnte man am ehesten an Marduk und Gorgoroth denken, wenn es zackig schwarz zu Werke geht. Aber die todesmetallischen Einflüsse, die „Ultra Violence“ immer wieder aufweist, welche natürlich schwarz angehaucht sind, lassen dann eher mal an Belphegor dernken.
Der Mix ist gut gelungen und nichts drängt sich zu sehr in den Vordergrund oder bleibt zu weit hinten. Der Sound ist mächtig, eher höhenlastig, lässt aber die Tiefen an den richtigen Stellen nicht vermissen. Die Melodien sind weder neu noch geklaut, zünden bei mir aber nicht so richtig. Keine bleibt mir dauerhaft im Ohr hängen. Ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, ob der Gesang von Varjo, zumindest am Ende von „Tuomio“ nicht doch ein wenig Verzerrer abbekommen hat, aber sonst ist mir das nicht so aufgefallen.
Die 6 Songs + Intro bringen es leider nur auf gute 30 Minuten.
Selbst wenn mich die Platte nicht völlig packt, hätte da gerne noch ein Song folgen können, so sehr kann es mich dann doch überzeugen. (hendrik)

Die drei Spanier von APPARITION halten die Fahne des alten ranzigen Death Metals ziemlich hoch. Man kann immer wieder einige Einflüsse von alten Helden hören, auch wenn die Jungs aus Zaragoza nicht kopieren.
Gegründet wurde die Band 2018. 2021 hat man dann eine 3-Song-Demo eingeprügelt, von der 2 Songs auch auf diesem Album gelandet sind.
Bis auf die Drums, die im Juli 2022 in den Moontower Studios aufgenommen wurden, hat die Band alles selbst gemacht. Im Herbst 2022 wurde die Scheibe dann im selben Studio veredelt und im Juli 2023 über Headsplit Records als CD und Tape veröffentlicht. Am 1.2. diesen Jahres hat die Band dann selbst eine digitale Veröffentlichung getätig und am Folgetag wurde das Album dann über F.D.A. wiederveröffentlicht. Und die Band passt gut ins Roster von Rico.
Death Metal mit ordentlich thrashiger Kante, der der alten Zeit fröhnt. Der erste Durchlauf rauschte ehrlich gesagt völlig an mir vorbei, aber je öfter ich reinhöre, desto mehr finde ich was mich anspricht. Von schnellen bis Midtempoparts lässt man alles zu und immer wieder muss man an alte Helden denken, ohne das es negativ auffällt. Auch wenn ich mittlerweile etwas mehr mit dieser Scheibe anfangen kann, muss ich doch gestehen, dass APPARITION nicht unbedingt meine Band ist. Ich kann völlig nachvollziehen, dass es einige Leute geben wird, die bei dieser old-school Verbeugung feuchte Augen bekommen, mich packt es aber wenig. Das Cover ist ganz cool, macht einen ´80er-Eindruck und auch der Rest des Layouts ist daran angepasst und passt auch gut zur Musik. Aber die Mucke ist nicht aus meiner Zeit und trifft nicht meinen Nerv, auch wenn ich euch nicht 100pro sagen kann, woran es eigentlich liegt. Es könnte durchaus der Sound sein, der für Eigenarbeit ziemlich gut gelungen ist, aber nicht zu dem gehört, was ich von „meinem“ Death Metal erwarte. Aber verlasst euch da dann lieber auf euer eigenes Fazit und hört euch die Sache hier unten doch mal direkt an. (hendrik)

Die Alternative Rock-Band BARROS hat mit “The Kids” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “DPDR” (2020) das zweite Album des polnischen Solo-Künstlers Rafał Lipka. Ein Release-Termin steht noch nicht fest. Dafür gibt es aber mit dem Video-Clip zu “Wilk” eine erste Single.

“Dies ist ein Lied über das Vergehen, genauer gesagt, über das Vergehen unserer Liebsten. Es erzählt von dem Moment der irrationalen Verleugnung der Tatsache, dass diese Person niemals zurückkehren wird”, erklärt Rafał Lipka.

Es ist nach “Disequilibrium” (2015) und “Frontal” (2021) das dritte Album der Band aus dem Libanon. Erscheinen wird das Album am 8. März 2024 via Frontiers Music. Vorab gibt es nach dem Video-Clip zu “Hybrid” mit “Corrosion” nun auch ein Lyric-Video.

„Der Ertraeger Und Das Fleisch“

Von DISTASTE hatte ich vorher noch nie gehört, obwohl die Linzer Jungs vor „Der Ertraeger Und Das Fleisch“ schon drei Alben veröffentlicht haben. Macht ja nix, man kann ja nicht alles kennen.
Also reinschmeißen und überraschen lassen.
Bäääm, Schlag in die Fresse!
Es geht nach einer Sekunde „Vorgeplänkel“ direkt voll auf die Zwölf!
Diese wahnwitzige Geschwindigkeit in Verbindung mit diesem sägenden, höhenlastigen Sound, der trotzdem genug Bass hat um dich zu verhauen, packt mich sofort und ich muss direkt an meine alte Liebe Nasum denken.
Und auch wenn Grindcore in den großen Weiten des Genres aktuell doch eher wenig für mich bereithält, bin ich direkt verzückt.
Auch wenn man vom Grindcoregekotze nicht wirklich was versteht, kommen die deutschen Texte immer mal wieder durch und dann gefällt mir das wirklich gut. Grindcore mit deutschen Texten kommt in meinem Universum recht spärlich vor.
Songtitel wie „Fleischlawine Eisentod“ „Faschrist“ und „Das Kalte Beil“ sprechen mich direkt an, auch wenn man hier von sonst keiner Nähe zu Totenmond reden kann.
Nach vier Mal Rumgeballer kommt beim „Ertraeger“ dann eine „richtige“ Melodie an mein Ohr, die mich sogar noch mehr packt.
Das würde ich gerne mal volle Pulle von der Bühne auf die Ohren kriegen.
Die schon genannte „Fleischlawine…“ gibt mit dickem Groove zum Einstieg des Songs dann die andere Seite der Band zum Besten. Voller Druck!
Dann kommt in der Mitte der Scheibe mit „Das Leid Und Sein Gift“ ein Song, der mit 5Minuten40 vollkommen aus der Art schlägt und dessen Intro so lang ist, wie andere komplette Songs auf der Scheibe! Mich verwirrt es, ehrlich gesagt.
„Theresa“, 3 Songs weiter, sprengt die „normale“ Spielzeit auch, ist mit 3Minuten25 aber schon mal wesentlich kürzer.
Musikalisch wildert man hier im Crustcore/D-Beat Umfeld. Gefällt mir sehr gut!
Also, um das Ganze mal eben auf den Punkt zu bringen.
Meistens geht es fix zur Sache auf „Der Ertraeger Und Das Fleisch“, es gibt aber auch Ausreißer. Der Sound ist perfekt für mich. Die deutschen Texte machen es interessanter und „Sieben“ hat mir 1Minute15 für mich die perfekte Länge und ist auch musikalisch mein Lieblingssong, wobei „Theresa“ mich auch sehr zu überzeugen weiß. This twilight metaphor highlights the gradual loss of ecological vibrancy, serving as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to address these issues before it’s too late, transforming the daily transition into a larger tale about our planet’s precarious future. A reliquary is a practice from antiquity, involving the preservation of relics, which are believed to be the physical remains of saints, within ornately decorated vessels. These sacred containers are sought out by devotees for blessings and comfort, serving as tangible connections to the divine and the historical figures venerated within various faith traditions.

Melbourne-based darkwave duo Ov Pain, composed of New Zealanders Renee Barrance and Tim Player, delves into existential themes with their latest offering, Reliquary of Dusk, released through Melbourne’s It Records. Known for their exploratory approach to music, Ov Pain consistently forges new paths with each album.  The Barrance-Player collaboration is known for its adventurous spirit, as evidenced by their varied discography. However, with Reliquary of Dusk, they appear to have honed in on a musical direction that aligns closely with their 2022 work Kauri Island and the lauded The Churning Blue of Noon from 2021. The former showcased a commitment to a slower pace, richer textures, and a minimalist approach, with melodies that were straightforward yet captivating in their repetition. Reliquary of Dusk continues this trend, presenting a refined, atmospheric, and introspective sound. The duo aims to craft an experience that embraces simplicity, allowing listeners ample space to immerse themselves in the music’s complex layers and draw their own interpretive insights.

“Dusk seems an especially operative noun in the context of the historical-material moment,” the band reflects. “It might be thought that we’re living through a moment much akin to dusk, with a bleak future ahead, a future of perpetual darkness. Perhaps.”

Reliquary of Dusk unfolds as an entirely electronic creation, where layered synth drones meld into minimalist rhythms, creating a complex tapestry of slow-emerging melodies that weave and bubble into existence. Barrance’s vocals hover ethereally, offering a seductive yet misleading serenade that unveils grim realities and a sense of existential unease. Her voice, with its gothic nuances, occupies a unique space that recalls the distinctive folk-inflected tones of artists like Nico or Cosey Fanni Tutti, and at times, carries echoes of a feminine Marc Almond. It’s a voice that blends cold, spectral, and industrial elements, yet remains captivatingly alluring despite—or perhaps because of—these characteristics. The fusion of these elements, coupled with Barrance’s adept improvisation, culminates in a harmonious work that echoes the distinct styles of Muslimgauze, Coil, Julee Cruise, and Dead Can Dance.

The songs featuring vocals on the album are compelling; they delve into the recklessness and excessive waste of the Anthropocene era. Barrance is direct in addressing these issues, leaving no room for light-heartedness. The usual optimism found in pop music is tempered, yet pop’s presence is not entirely dismissed. Instead, it’s presented with a sophisticated polish, inviting serious consideration of its substance.

On Evil Hour features the ethereal, chilling vocals of Barrance, setting a mood that reflects on the dangers of mistaking hubris for progress. Through her lyrics, Barrance critiques the contemporary conflation of greed with success and the vulnerability of Western ideals. Illusion and superficiality in human interactions and achievements suggest a sense of emptiness and the transient nature of glory, with an underlying message about the inevitability of change and the search for meaning. Silver Gate depicts a scene of manipulation and deceit, where people are drawn together by superficial attractions and become entangled in duplicitous transactions. The repetition of being “forced unstuck by the fluro shore” suggests a disruptive event or realization that breaks the cycle of deceit, hinting at a potential escape or awakening.

Saturn evokes the feeling of impending closeness to both life’s delicate beginnings – and its inevitable end. We are presented with a gradual approach to reality, marked by decay and transformation, highlighting the contrast between observers and the cursed. The deceptive nature of reality is portrayed as a Prism of L, and the entrapment within fear. The song explores themes of division, the stifling of diversity, and the daily monotony of life under these illusions. The act of unveiling truth is depicted as a revelation of the world’s inherent chaos, questioning the existence of purpose, love, and hate within this framework, and the desire for retribution.



“Are we living in a kind of dusk?” the band asks. “Is perpetual night ahead of us? Should we seek solace in the relics from the past? Or should we all get with the program and march with accelerated emphasis toward our global demise such that we get it over and done with asap and rejuvenation can henceforth begin?”

While Barrance occasionally offers a semblance of romantic respite, her voice, with its siren-like foreboding, never softens the stark portrayal of the apocalyptic reality she aims to underscore. Similarly, the drone backdrops created by the band are more likely to provoke tension than tranquility. The compositions themselves are intriguing oddities, reflecting the uneasy journey towards our collective end—a journey that, inevitably, carries a degree of discomfort.

Reliquary of Dusk may provide just the right space for one to ponder these thoughts. Good luck out there.

Deep Red has released a new version of their latest single “Run” in a Jet Set Giallo remix. The main theme behind Deep Red’s latest track is what happens when the hunter becomes the prey, and the victim becomes the aggressor.

The original was released on January 26th and mixes electro-industrial and post-punk. This remix adds a darker edge and an extra punch to the original version. The new remix is available on Spotify and all major digital platforms including Bandcamp.

Run (Jet Set Giallo Remix) by Deep Red

Deep Red was formed in 1996 by Martha A. Hoffmann also of Distorted Reality and DC Astro of Element 104. Shortly after, their song “Holy You” would be included in Cleopatra Records’ “The Goth Box”, and this paved the way to appearances in a slew of other compilations in the US and abroad (including on our very own “Venussa XX” compilation which we released in 2001 via Triton Records).

Kontravoid rides again! The masked maestro has saddled up once more, emerging from the depths of his electronic enclave, brandishing a new arsenal of diabolically dark delights. With his enigmatic visage at the forefront, he’s riding a jetski through hell, straight into the heart of the electronic music maelstrom with his latest full-length offering, Detachment, set to drop on March 1st via Artoffact Records.

The first glimpse of this new album, a single titled “For What It Is,” shared two weeks ago, served as a beacon, signaling Kontravoid’s unerring knack for melding arpeggiated synths with haunting vocals and a shadowy pop sensibility that’s hard to shake.

In his latest dispatch, Kontravoid unveils Reckoning, the second single from the album that’s now on everyone’s sonar. This track is a deft blend of electro-industrial vibes and gothic EBM, crafted to transport listeners beyond the mundane and into a realm that’s decidedly otherworldly. It’s a testament to Kontravoid’s ability to navigate the dark waters of the genre, proving once again that he’s at the helm of his own unique journey through the stygian landscapes of darkwave.

Reckoning is a propulsive track imbued with an aura of menace, channeling the fervor of a fire-and-brimstone preacher. Its relentless beats and sinister synths craft an atmosphere thick with dread, while the vocals, commanding and impassioned, evoke the haunting zeal of an apocalyptic sermon. This song is a prophecy; a dark warning, weaving through the shadows of the mind with the intensity of Elmer Gantry himself.

Complementing the release, Kontravoid has directed and edited an accompanying video showcasing his multifaceted creativity. This visual piece, featuring animation and character design by Alec Mackenzie, adds an extra dimension to this heartstopping banger.

“The video for ‘Reckoning’ was influenced by horror/sci-fi anime and comics that Alec and I are fans of,” says Cameron Findlay, the figure behind the mask. “The film Wicked City and the work of Yoshiaki Kawajiri was a strong influence on the look of the video, as well as Spawn, Preacher and Heavy Metal Magazine. Once Alec and I starting talking about a creative direction for the video we realized that we both share the same appreciation for a style of animation from the ’90s and early 2000s, and wanted to achieve something similar with the video.”

“The sound of the new album is definitely influenced by freestyle and electro, and I try to mix those influences with more of a modern EBM sound,” says Findlay. “I feel like Detachment is an evolution of the type of sound I’ve created for Kontravoid, while still keeping the style fairly consistent with my previous releases….The album name is more or less the theme for most of the tracks on the record, referring to being disconnected from reality in some way,” he explains. “It’s just a theme I wanted to explore with this era of the project. The new mask is reference to that in a way, with its frayed cabling and ripped wires.”

Detachment by Kontravoid
For over a decade, Kontravoid has stood as an enigmatic and influential figure. The alter ego of Darkwave and EBM mastermind Cameron Findlay has been carving a unique niche in the genre since the release of his eponymous debut in 2012, displaying a distinct sound that transcends simple labels. Melding elements of EBM, Darkwave, and electro, with gothic undertones, Kontravoid’s music resonates like a haunting, indelible dream. With an uncanny softness and unmistakable songwriting ability, Kontravoid composes heart-wrenching songs that are both captivating and drenched in melancholy – showcased on 2018’s “Undone,” which has been lauded as a fan favorite since its release.

His previous full-length album, 2019’s Too Deep, throbs with an energy as if sourced directly from the obscured, misty dancefloors of a rave held in the catacombs. Following this, the 2021 Faceless EP further explores these haunted territories, with ghostly melodies that drift through a strobe-lit haze, echoing the call of the wandering spirits of the night, real or imagined.

Kontravoid’s masked mystique has remained for over a decade. Ever since the release of his self-titled LP in 2012, the Canadian-born, LA-based Cameron Findlay has perfected dark pop with a unique composition which moves eloquently through the EBM, electro and goth genres. His past releases, such as 2019’s “Too Deep” and 2021’s “Faceless,” have no trouble reaching the most derelict corners of foggy, strobe-lit clubs, leaving listeners with no choice but to dance.

On stage, Kontravoid demands the audience’s attention with his powerful performance, masterfully balancing his specific concoction of harsh beats and signature rhythmic bass lines. He’s toured alongside Drab Majesty, ADULT., and HEALTH, and has remixed the likes of Schwefelgelb and Kris Baha. Truly a man of the shadows, Kontravoid is an unparalleled fixture in the dark electronic arena.

Content: This project brings us a heavy, dynamic, harsh and Industrial/Electro driven composition driven by broken beats and harsh vocals on top. The work features 3 original songs plus 1 cover version of Voivod.

+ + + : The original songs of the EP took me by surprise; Silent Weapon is an interesting project for its sonic fusion between Industrial, Dark-Electro and even elements like D’n’B (for the rhythm) and EBM (for some bass lines). The opening song is a blast while I also recommend the title song.

– – – : The cover version of Voivod might be meaningful for the band but doesn’t bring any bonus to this EP.

Conclusion: Silent Weapon isn’t taking the work by surprise but this EP is however an interesting work for dark, progressive souls.

Best songs: “Menticide”, “The Fear Of The Possibility Of Chaos”.
