Die Post Hardcore / Modern Metal-Band VENUES veröffentlicht ihr neues Album “Transience” am 29. März 2024 via Arising Empire auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Aufgenommen wurde die Platte mit Produzent Christoph Wieczorek (Sawdust Recordings), eine Hörprobe in Form des Clips “Unspoken Words” gibt es bei YouTube.

Darüber hinaus teilte die Gruppe das Stück “Radiate Me” bei YouTube. Außerdem stehen “Oblivion” sowie “Haunted House” als Musikvideo bei YouTube bereit.

Zuvor gab es im Herbst 2022 bereits die Single “Cravings”. Auch zu diesem Song hat die Gruppe einen Clip gedreht. Sängerin Lela kommentiert:

“‘Cravings’ wurde darüber geschrieben, sich von einer Sucht zu befreien. Dabei spielt es keine Rolle, ob es sich um Drogen, materielle Dinge oder Menschen handelt. Sich von dem zu befreien, was einen nur in den Abgrund treiben kann, ist nicht einfach, denn die Sucht trägt oft einen strahlenden Schleier, der die Augen vor der Realität verschließt. Diesen Schritt zu wagen und sich zu verabschieden, ist anstrengend und sehr mutig. ‘Cravings’ zu schreiben, hat mir Mut gemacht, und ich hoffe, dass es das auch für andere tut oder sie zumindest dazu inspiriert, sehr ehrlich zu sich selbst zu sein.”

Darüber hinaus stellten VENUES das Stück “Reflections” mit einem Musikvideo bei YouTube vor. Sängerin Lela erklärt die Bedeutung des Tracks:

“In ‘Reflections’ beschreiben wir den Prozess der Selbsterkenntnis. Wenn einem mit der Zeit immer wieder klar wird, dass nur man selbst derjenige ist, der einem wirklich helfen kann. Und man so lange einen Spiegel vorgehalten bekommt, bis man annehmen und verstehen kann, was man darin sieht. Denn nur so kann man über sich selbst hinauswachsen.“

“Reflections” folgt auf das Studioalbum “Solace“, das im Sommer 2021 via Arising Empire erschienen ist.

Crushing State have released their debut single “Surveillance” on the Swedish label Megahype. A video is available now. Crushing State’s sound fuses electro-industrial, metal, and a nuanced sonic palette.

Crushing State is the new electro industrial metal band of mastermind Chris Ruiz (ex-And One, Pakt) and members of Seadrake and Solar Fake. Founder of the project is Chris Ruiz (ex-And One, Pakt). Ruiz’s journey began in 1998 when he first delved into crafting industrial-sounding tapes and an unreleased full-length album. Fast forward 25 years, and he is breathing new life into a project that had long been dormant.

For the occasion he teamed up with Mathias Thürk (ex-Minerve, Seadrake), guitarist André Feller (Solar Fake, Dreadful Shadows), and drummer Vincent Viebig.

Ankündigung für Bielefeld, Movie, am 01.03.2024 (Beginn 20.00 UHR)

Für das Ende der Winterpause haben sich die Jungs der Popsecret Agenten wieder mal ein ganz besonderes Bonbon nach Bielefeld geholt. Mit den Niederländern von CLAN OF XYMOX gibt sich eine Formation die Ehre, welche die 80er Düster-Discos auf den Tanzflächen beherrschte. Und das ist erst der Anfang… Traits, Rosi, Messer, City Gates, Suir, Die Selektion usw. werden in den nächsten Wochen folgen. Wie üblich lässt auch die Vorband keine Wünsche offen.

 

DAYS OF SORROW
Eröffnen werden den Abend DAYS OF SORROW, deren Existenzgründung auch in den 80ern behaftet ist. Zwei VÖ gab es zwischen ’84 und ’86, hernach schwelgte die Band in einer Ruhephase aus der sie erst vor kurzer Zeit erwachte. Spannend wird sein, wie es gelingt die Patina ins jetzt zu transportieren. Nach dem Ombra Festival (2022) ist die legendäre 80er-Jahre-Band DAYS OF SORROW aus ihrem Dornröschenschlaf erwacht, um sich wieder an die Spitze der aktuellen Synthie-Welle zu setzen und dient hier natürlich als perfekter Opener.

 

CLAN OF XYMOX
Die Niederländer um Mastermind Ronny Moorings (der übrigens nie zu altern scheint) existieren seit mittlerweile 40 Jahren und haben so manchen Dark Wave Act nachhaltig beeinflusst. Songs wie „A Day“, „Stranger“ oder „Louise“ gehören heuer zu jeder guten Wave Party!

DAS MOVIE
Für ohne-Auto-kommende ist das Movie perfekt gelegen, gelangt man doch quasi direkt aus dem Zug in den Laden. Das Ambiente ist diesem Event angemessen, neben den Konzerthallen-Innereien, gibt es einen kleinen Kneipenbereich, der zum verweilen einlädt (natürlich nicht während der Auftritte). “Phantoma” ist ein Konzeptalbum über Künstliche Intelligenz. UNLEASH THE ARCHER-Sängerin Brittney Slayes entwickelte das Konzept bereits im Jahr 2021, also lange bevor die Diskussion um die künstliche Intelligenz ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. “Phantoma” erzählt von den Versuchen der KI, auf einem dystopischen Planeten in der nahen Zukunft Gefühle zu entwickeln.

Sprache wandelt sich, fortwährend geprägt durch Kultur, zeitgenössischen Trends und natürlich den täglichen Gebrauch. Eigentlich also die Antithese zu Hildegard von Bingens Lingua ignota, einem konstruierten Sammelsurium an Wörtern, das mit der Philosophie PERSEFONEs auf den ersten Blick so gar nichts gemeinsam hat. Denn mit neuem Sänger in den Reihen lässt uns die Prog-Metal-Band auch diesmal an einem Transformationsprozess teilhaben.

Das Vokabular jedoch – und hier zeigt sich die entscheidende Gemeinsamkeit – erweitert das Sextett nach Belieben, indem es seinem Repertoire nach Belieben neue Facetten hinzufügt. Obwohl „Lingua Ignota: Part I“ dabei auf eine sehr moderne und damit mächtige Produktion setzt, bleiben feinere Details wie die Synth-Arbeit Miguel „Moe“ Espinosas deutlich auszumachen. Ein stabiles Fundament, um neue Horizonte zu erkunden: Anders als auf dem Vorgänger „Metanoia“ (2022) sind ausladende Instrumental-Passagen auf der Nachfolge-EP kaum noch auszumachen.

PERSEFONE präsentieren sich auf “Lingua Ignota: Part I” experimentierfreudig
Die Songstrukturen sind in dieser Hinsicht etwas konventioneller und zielstrebiger gehalten, was die rastlosen und teils verschachtelten Riffs in einem ganz anderen Kontext zeigt. Atmosphärisch ist „Lingua Ignota: Part I“ folglich ein ganz anderes Biest, was die markige Stimmfarbe des neuen Shouters Daniel Rodríguez Flys nur noch deutlicher hervorhebt. Die Growls und Screams des Frontmann tragen ein dezentes Core-Timbre in sich, was allerdings erstaunlich gut mit der Singstimme Moes harmoniert. In diesem Spannungsfeld finden PERSEFONE mit „One Word“ einen vereinnahmenden Sound-Mix, der manchmal gar nicht so weit weg von den jüngeren GOJIRA zu sein scheint.

Reduzieren lässt sich die Band derweil nicht auf diese eine Referenz. Ein verspieltes Gitarrensolo und führender Klargesang zeichnen in „The Equable“ ein ungleich offenes Bild, das Raum zum Durchatmen schafft, bevor das ausladende Titelstück den Progressive Death Metal mit Akustikgitarren und pointierten Thrash-Spitzen anreichert. Dementsprechend breitgefächert präsentieren sich PERSEFONE in diesen 26 Minuten, welche die Gruppe durchaus experimentierfreudig zeigt. Ungewöhnlich ist das für eine Prog-Band kaum, denn wer diese Musik als seine Sprache wählt, tut dies natürlich auch um sich deren Wandelbarkeit zu Nutze zu machen.

This narrative fabric, reminiscent of Dickens’ societal critiques and Hardy’s rural tragedies, might find a kindred spirit in the morbid and gothic tales of Edgar Allan Poe. As Bleak navigates the moral complexities of Brontë and the social upheavals of Gaskell, he could also inhabit the psychological depths of Poe’s “Ligeia” or the decaying grandeur of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” embodying the essence of a tragic protagonist ensnared in obsession, madness, and the supernatural. This melding into the damp anemia of the Victorian era and Poe’s gothic realms highlights the enduring exploration of the human condition through literature, with William Bleak bridging these dark, rich narrative worlds.

Resonating against this evocative backdrop, a Post Punk/Cold Wave band from Berlin, Germany, bearing the name of this conjectural protagonist, William Bleak, channels this morose spirit. Their music—a fusion of electronic beats, frenetic guitar strums, and deep basslines—creates a sound that is as grotesque as it is celebratory, mirroring the complex emotional landscapes of their namesake. Initially, the band’s sound was steeped in the ethereal tones of dreamy, melancholic rock, drawing inspiration from shoegaze and the ephemeral nature of fading memories. Yet, influenced by the stark coldness of Berlin’s winters, William Bleak has evolved, adopting a bolder, colder, and heavier sonic identity, stripping back to the essentials to achieve a more direct and impactful sound.

Now, William Bleak’s latest release, “Crows and Ravens,” casts a corvid-shaped shadow over its audience with a music video that channels the eerie allure of gothic luminaries such as Conrad Viedt as Cesar, the somnambulist from “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” Crafted to evoke the haunting ambiance of a silent film, the video layers a timeless enigma over the band’s stark and haunting sound. This track is a tribute to the enigmatic and morbidly beautiful aesthetic of bygone days, blending the profound allure of pioneers like Bauhaus and Corpus Delecti with the contemporary post-punk resonance of The Soft Moon. With its crunchy snares, fuzz-drenched bass, and ethereal guitar riffs, “Crows and Ravens” brings back the quintessential old-school gothic rock vibe—culled from the era of Sounds, ZigZig, and The Face.

The band is not coy about the track being so old-school goth that it could have sacked Rome, stating: “Crows and Ravens is a love letter to dark music and the goth scene over the decades – Forever Midnight!”

Die Symphonic Metal-Band EXIT EDEN um Clémentine Delauney (VISIONS OF ATLANTIS), Anna Brunner (LEAGUE OF DISTORTION) und Marina La Torraca (PHANTOM ELITE) hat ihr zweites Studioalbum mit dem Titel “Femmes Fatales” angekündigt. Darauf enthalten sind sowohl Eigenkompositionen als auch Cover-Stücke. Zu einem davon hat die Gruppe jetzt ein Musikvideo produziert: “Désenchantée” bei YouTube – im Original stammt das Stück von Mylène Farmer.

Mit dem Titelstück “Femme Fatale” gibt es einen weiteren Vorgeschmack als Clip bei YouTube.

Die Neuinterpretation des JOURNEY-Hits “Separate Ways” gibt es ebenfalls in Bild und Ton bei YouTube.

Die erste Single “Run!” steht auch als Video bei YouTube bereit. Als Gastsänger ist außerdem Marko Hietala (ex-NIGHTWISH) zu hören; geschrieben wurde das Stück von Anna Brunner und Hannes Braun (KISSIN’ DYNAMITE). Die Band kommentiert:

“Femmes Fatales” wurde von Hannes Braun produziert und erschien am 12. Januar 2024 via Napalm Records auf CD; Vinyl sowie digital. Das Mastering übernahm Jacob Hansen.

The Seattle-based turbowave band Dual Analog have announced the release of their latest single: “Long Divide”.

Dual Analog was founded by Chip Roberts and Kurtis Skinner. Their music fuses elements of metal, new wave, industrial, and world music. Mixing equal parts Moog to Marshall they prefer to refer to their sound as being ‘turbowave’.

Chip Roberts says this about “Long Divide”: “We understand the power of music to transport listeners to a new realm of consciousness. With ‘Long Divide’, we hope to guide you through a ritual of the senses, taking you on a journey that will transform your perception of sound.”

Die Power Metal-Band THORNBRIDGE präsentiert ihr neues Album “Daydream Illusion” mit einem Lyric-Video zur Single “My Last Desire” bei YouTube vor. Die Platte erzählt eine Konzeptgeschichte über einen Jungen, “[…] der alles daransetzt, seine eigene Traumwelt und die darin befindlichen Wesen vor der Zerstörung zu bewahren, die ihm in der realen Welt durch fragwürdige und inhumane Behandlungsmethoden und Operationen in einer Nervenheilanstalt während der frühen viktorianischen Zeit zugefügt wird.”

Sänger Jörg “Mo” Naneder erklärt zu “My Last Desire”:

„Der letzte Wunsch des Jungen ist, dass seine Geschichten, die er in seiner Traumwelt erlebt hat, weitererzählt werden. Denn so können seine Fantasiewesen in den Träumen und Vorstellungen anderer Menschen weiterleben, wenn der Junge selbst seine Erinnerungen komplett verliert.

Eine Besonderheit dieses Songs ist die fast durchgängig gleichbleibende Melodie in der Strophe.

Diese war auch mit die erste Idee überhaupt zum neuen Album. Neben dem einfach gehaltenen Chorus ist die Strophe somit auch sehr einprägsam. Damit haben wir zwei Ohrwürmer in einen Song gepackt.“

“Daydream Illusion” wurde von Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann gemischt sowie gemastert und erscheint am 22. März 2024 via Massacre Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Das Artwork gestaltete Juanjo Castellano Rosado.

(Photo by Élodie Duhoo) Along with their “Come and Join the Beautiful Army” EP, electro-trip hop duo The Noise Who Runs presents a short film, offering these five tracks plus the extra instrumental track “Goalmouth Interlude”. The film last for almost 20 minutes and “showcases this dark and brooding collection, straddling the line between hope and despair, defeat and optimism” so the band says. The EP is out now via TNWR Records.

“There are themes and ideas running through all the songs and the film reinforces and highlights those. There are various images that are repeated or linked across the whole thing, sometimes as quite literal broad strokes to fit the lyrics and sometimes more abstract juxtapositions as well as more off the wall, poetic references,” says Ian Pickering.

“This EP is a call for solidarity in a world constantly being sown with division and discord. So far, the start of the 21st Century seems remarkably like repeating the mistakes of the early 20th Century. In the First World War, all that flag-waving, jingoistic sense of and pride in nationality across Europe, the othering of governments and nations all engaged in the same exploitation of other continents, resulted in the most obscene and needless carnage and it feels today as if nothing has changed, save that rather than conscript us all and send us to France and Belgium for the slaughter, the big push would appear to be starving us to death in our own homes while we work all the hours of the day for a monthly wage that barely covers the cost of living,” says Ian Pickering.

WITHERFALL haben Details zu ihrem neuen Album bekannt gegeben: Die vierte Platte der Band trägt den Titel “Sounds Of The Forgotten” und erscheint am 31. Mai 2024 via DeathWave Records.

Nun hat die Band auch ein Video zu “Opulent”  bei YouTube geteilt – insgesamt sind damit sieben der zehn Songs von “Sounds Of The Forgotten” bereits veröffentlicht.

Rising from the murky underbelly of Florida’s deathrock scene, Obsidian, with the enigmatic Missy Mortis at the helm, releases a powerful new LP accompanied by a striking music video. “19 Dead” stands as a mournful homage, honoring the memory of nineteen souls who have passed since the band’s formation in 2018, weaving their stories into the dark narrative of the music.

The moniker ‘Obsidian’ harks back to a more turbulent time, chosen for its reference to the volcanic glass that once served a grim purpose. The band itself emerged as a sanctuary for its members, each grappling with their own set of tribulations, melding their fervent passion for rock with an infusion of gloomy electronic and mystical undertones. Today, Obsidian’s lineup boasts the talents of Missy Mortis, wielding a guitar and powerful croon while steering the creative direction, alongside Kathy D.’s synthetic orchestrations, Dent’s deep bass reverberations, and the percussive prowess of D.C., together forging a sound that is as haunting as it is cathartic.

19 Dead opens with the lead single Night Director, which comes with a music video. The lyrics depict a tumultuous emotional landscape marked by betrayal, grief, and existential contemplation. Set against a backdrop of forbidden love and internal turmoil, the song grapples with feelings of entrapment and the desire for release, questioning the authenticity of relationships and the impact of their potential demise on others. The music video, crafted by Roberto Badillo, artfully oscillates between scenes of a somber celebration and the stark daylight of a graveyard, suggesting that the spirits revel in joy as they transcend the confines of earthly existence.

The haunting Memories conveys loss and longing, where a voice desperately reaches out to a departed loved one, grappling with the harrowing realities of grief, addiction, and the fragile hope of reunion in dreams. Following this is Glass, a number about isolation and existential anguish, touching on themes of pain, trauma, and the inevitability of death. Burdened by past experiences and contemplating the meaning of existence, he ultimately finds solace in the shared fate of mortality. Likewise, the haunting atmosphere of Decay centers around the theme of parting without a final farewell. They capture a dialogue between the living and the dead, highlighting the pain of unresolved departures and the permanence of absence. Apathies of a Sinking City paints a vivid picture of a city teetering on the edge of disaster, juxtaposing its vibrant nightlife and hedonistic excesses with the impending doom of a natural catastrophe. As the storm approaches, the city’s inhabitants remain engrossed in their debaucheries, oblivious to the danger. References to societal decay, crime, and apathy hint at a deeper moral and environmental neglect, culminating in a foreboding vision of the city’s inevitable downfall. Angel depicts a transformative journey from heartbreak to empowerment, where betrayal leads to self-discovery and liberation. Embracing desires and newfound strength, one can ascend to a higher state, asserting control and grace amidst themes of lust and revenge. The album ends with the fiery political anthem Nondisclosure.

Mit “Songs in the Key of Death” wird in einigen Tagen das neue Album der Heavy Metal / Hard Rock-Band BLOOD OPERA erscheinen. Es ist nach einer 2019er-EP das erste Album der Kanadier aus Toronto.

“Songs in the Key of Death” wurde von Nick Ginn gemixt und gemastert und wird am 24. Februar 2024 erscheinen.
