Der Termin für das ROCK HARD FESTIVAL 2024 steht fest: Das Festival findet vom 17. Mai bis 19. Mai 2024 wie gewohnt im Amphitheater Gelsenkirchen statt.

Nun steht das komplette Billing des Open Airs, neben den Festival- und Campingtickets sind ab sofort auch Tageskarten erhältlich.

Allerdings gibt es auch schon die erste Absage: GRAVE, die bereits bestätigt waren, haben  alle Konzerte 2024 abgesagt, Gitarrist Mika Lagrén und Bassist Tobias Cristiansson haben die Band verlassen.

Der Kartenvorverkauf startete am 19. September 2023, auf https://shop.rockhard.de/de-de/rock-hard-festival.

Nach Ende der Frühbucher-Phase gelten seit 1. November 2023 folgende Preise: 3-Tages-Tickets: 130,90 Euro; 3-Tages-Ticket plus Camping: 167,80 Euro.

Tagestickets für Freitag, 17. Mai 2024 kosten 52 Euro, für Tagestickets für Samstag, 18. Mia 2024 und Sonntag, 19. Mai 2024 jeweils 62 Euro.

Das CAMPING BATTLEGROUND FESTIVAL findet im Jahr 2024 an drei vollen Tagen statt: Die nächste Auflage ist vom 16. bis 19. Mai 2024 geplant. Das Besondere am Open Air im bayerischen Oettingen ist dabei das “offene Infield”: Der Zeltplatz ist Teil des Festivals und nicht vom restlichen Gelände abgetrennt.

Jetzt haben die Veranstalter mit der Tageseinteilung auch die geplante Running Order veröffentlicht (s. unten).

Tickets gibt es derzeit zum Preis von 99,-€ über die offizielle Festival-Homepage.

Die Brutal Death Metal-Band BRODEQUIN hat mit “Harbinger of Woe” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das vierte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Tennessee und das erste seit ihrem Comeback. Somit folgt das neue Album auf das 2004er-Album “Methods of Execution” nach.

“Wir hatten eine Reihe von Todesfällen in unserer Familie”, erklärt Sänger Jamie Bailey. “Mike und ich wussten, dass wir uns zurückziehen mussten, bis wir die Zeit hatten und geistig in der Lage waren, BRODEQUIN die Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, die es verdient.”

Von der damaligen Besetzung sind noch Bassist und Sänger Jamie Bailey sowie dessen Bruder und Gitarrist Mike Bailey mit von der Partie. Ergänzt werden die beiden von Drummer Brennan Shackelford.

“Harbinger of Woe” wurde von Josh Welshman gemixt und von Brad Boatwright gemastert, während das Cover-Artwork von Jose de Brito stammt. Erscheinen wird das Album am 22. März 2024 via Season of Mist. Vorab gibt es die zweite Single “Suffocation In Ash” im Stream. Darüber hinaus steht ein Videoclip zu “Of Pillars and Trees” bereit.

“Dieser Song ist inspiriert von den historischen Praktiken, bei denen Bäume zum Zweck der Folter und Hinrichtung verwendet wurden”, erklärt Jamie Bailey. “Unter den unzähligen Methoden, die angewandt wurden, war ein herausragendes Beispiel die Befestigung einer Person an einer Säule oder, noch häufiger, an einem Baumstamm mit Hilfe von langen Eisennägeln.”

Nach acht Jahren kommen AC/DC wieder auf Europatour – und  haben heute zwei Zusatztermine bekannt gegeben. Neu auf dem Tourplan sind Konzerte am 19. Juni 2024 in Dresden und am 4. August 2024 in Hannover. Karten für die beiden neuen Termine sind noch erhältlich, die Preise beginnen bei rund 153 Euro.

Angekündigt waren ursprünglich je zwei Shows in Gelsenkirchen und München, außerdem gibt es Auftritte in Dresden, Stuttgart, Nürnberg, Hannover und am Hockenheimring.

Mit “Lying Beside You” wird in wenigen Wochen das neue Album der Progressive / Post-Rock-Band OHPEN AHRMS erscheinen. Es ist der erste Release des US-amerikanischen Quintetts aus Chicago, welches aus Alan Strathmann (OUR EARTH IS A TOMB, STARLESS), Quinn Curren (STARLESS), Sam Ross, Sheldon Kessel und Andy Wulf besteht.

“Lying Beside You” spricht über Moral, Trauma, Spiritualität und seelisches Wohlbefinden und beleuchtet dabei die von Spannungen und Konflikten geprägten Zeiten. Als Soundengineer fungierte Sanford Parker. Erscheinen wird das Album am 15. März 2024. Vorab gibt es den Track “Don’t Look For Me There” zu hören.

ANCIIENTS haben ihren Song “Built To Die” in aktueller Besetzung neu eingespielt.

Darauf zu hören sind wie auf der neuen Fassung von “Raise The Sun” Bassist Roy O’Brien sowie Gitarrist Brock MacInnes, die beide erst nach der Veröffentlichung des zweiten Albums “Voice Of The Void” (2016) zur Band stießen. Ursprünglich stammt “Raise The Sun” vom Album “Heart Of Oak” (2013), “Built To Die” ist der “Snakebeard”-EP (2011) entnommen.

Sänger und Gitarrist Kenny Cook erklärt:

“Das 10-jährige Jubiläum von ‘Heart of Oak’ fiel in die Zeit, in der wir unser neues Album aufnahmen, und wir beschlossen, ein paar Songs mit unserer aktuellen Besetzung neu aufzunehmen. Es war eine Reise in die Vergangenheit, ein Jahrzehnt später erneut mit Produzent Jesse Gander am Ruder an diesem Song zu arbeiten. Wir hoffen, dass euch der Sound dieser neuen Version von ‘Raise the Sun’ gefällt.”

Der Nachfolger des aktuellen Werks “Voice Of The Void” soll noch 2024 via Season of Mist erscheinen.

Die Power Metal-Band DRAGONFORCE hat eine Cover-Version zum TAYLOR SWIFT-Song “Wildest Dreams” als Clip via YouTube veröffentlicht. Es handelt sich dabei um den Bonustrack des neuen Albums “Warp Speed Warriors”.

Daraus hat die Gruppe auch die Single “Astro Warrior Anthem” ausgekoppelt. Zuvor teilte die Formation eine weitere Version von “Doomsday Party” inklusive Video:  “Doomsday Party ft. Elize Ryd, Amaranthe” – in der Albumversion teilte die Band bereits vor einigen Wochen “Doomsday Party” als Musikvideo bei YouTube. 

Als zweite Single erschien im Oktober “Power Of The Triforce” bei YouTube. Das Stück ist eine Hommage an die Videospiel-Reihe “The Legend Of Zelda”.

Alle drei Songs stammen vom neuen Album “Warp Speed Warriors”, das am 15. März 2024 über Napalm Records erscheint. Gitarrist Herman Li erklärt:

Wir freuen uns sehr, nach über 4 Jahren Wartezeit einen brandneuen DragonForce-Song zu veröffentlichen! Es war eine schwierige Entscheidung, welchen unserer neuen Tracks wir zuerst veröffentlichen sollten, aber wir haben uns für diesen entschieden, weil er eine andere Facette unserer Musik zeigt, aber trotzdem den unverwechselbaren DragonForce-Sound beibehält.

Die Dreharbeiten zu diesem Video waren ein Riesenspaß, und wir hatten die Gelegenheit, unsere Vision in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, zum Leben zu erwecken. Wir hoffen, dass Metal-Fans aus allen Bereichen des Genres etwas finden werden, das ihnen gefällt. Wir können es kaum erwarten, den Song auf unserer kommenden Tournee live zu spielen!”

Zuvor hatte die Formation einen Plattenvertrag beim österreichischen Label unterzeichnet. “Warp Speed Warriors” erscheint auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital.

Im Februar und März 2024 kommen DRAGONFORCE dann zusammen mit AMARANTHE auf Co-Headliner-Tournee. Als Support mit dabei sind INFECTED RAIN. Neben einigen Shows in Deutschland, steht auch jeweils ein Termin in Österreich sowie der Schweiz auf dem Programm. Herman Li erklärt:

Emanating from the gloomy clutches of sorrow and the radiant summits of romance, Dresden synthpop/New Wave quartet, Dry Skin, introduces their inaugural single, the deliciously icy Again and Again.

Fueled by an unabashed adoration for the lo-fi synth reverberations of the 80s and the unadorned frameworks of Nowave and Neue Deutsche Welle compositions, Dry Skin—comprising drummer Simon Herzog, synth aficionado Bernd van den Broedericken, bass virtuoso John Köhler, and the enigmatic Robert E. Smith—craves a return to elemental music-making. Frontman Robert E. Smith casts a droll eye over his surroundings: a weary landscape marred by the excesses of hyper-capitalism. He muses on the irony of nations once exploited now turning the tables, the absurdity of skyrocketing real estate prices, the unsettling rise of neo-fascist factions, and the universal quest for a brighter tomorrow. Amidst this tumult, he seeks solace in the pursuit of personal tranquility and affection within his own small enclave.

The video for the song is as minimalist as the song itself, with a charming DIY choreography video starring dancer Cindy Hammer.

“I am really happy to have found a visualization of the forever returning stupidity of human behavior the lyrics are about,” Smith reflects. “Cindy Hammer…displays that perfectly in her dance moves, running in circles and going back and forth.”

Athens, Georgia gothic rock trio Tears For The Dying (Adria Stembridge, Joshua Broughton, and Mick Payne) tosses their bat into the dark carnival of life with In the Shadow of the Midnight Sun, their first full-length release since 2021, out now via Classic City Vinyl/Bat-Cave Productions.

In the Shadow of the Midnight Sun addresses the complexities of mental health, blending struggles and triumphs with reflective insights. The band’s goal is for the album to create a bond of connection and understanding, allowing listeners to see their own mental health experiences mirrored in the music. They hope this album will contribute to the wider conversation on mental well-being, offering listeners a way to process and relate to their personal challenges, and fostering empathy and awareness in the broader community.

The opening track, We Are the Darkness, is a maelstrom of guitars and vocals that channels cosmic horror through a narrative about extraterrestrials drawn to human malevolence, encapsulating themes of otherworldliness and societal critique.



Dagger in God’s Back is a caustic intermezzo, with wailing guitars and vocals with terse and vivid lyrics about consuming the divine and transforming into something ethereal in rebellion.

The brief and angst-laden cry for help that is Jisatsu delves into dark and emotive themes, likely touching on despair and the contemplation of self-harm, an ordeal many in the trans community endure, but thankfully not alone. Its title, which means ‘suicide’ in Japanese, hints at a deep exploration of personal turmoil and the struggle with inner demons and society as a whole. (If you are struggling, please reach out)

The journey through existential crisis and worsening mental state with the baroque Heterochromia. Next, the rhythmic Bloat unfolds as a harrowing tale of an individual beleaguered by a lifetime of bullying, culminating in a tragic end. Yet, in a macabre reversal of fate, the story takes an unexpected turn. The protagonist’s main tormentor from high school, who has since become a police officer and first responder, is confronted with her body. In a chilling twist, she reanimates, seizing the opportunity to rectify past wrongs in a grisly resolution, ensuring she has the final word in this dark saga.

Tears for the Dying’s bandleader Adria turned to the study of a foreign language as a lifeline during a challenging 2021, leading to the creation of Don’t Wanna and Ikinokotta with lyrics written in Japanese. This method of coping underscores the transformative power of engaging in beloved activities, particularly those that stimulate learning or physical movement, to shift our brain’s neural pathways from detrimental cycles toward healthier habits. This transition is palpable in Don’t Wanna, which captures the pivotal moment of rejecting a life overshadowed by depression and despair. The song, brief yet profound, acts as a metaphorical light switch, illuminating a path from darkness to clarity with its straightforward lyrics and resonant message. Ikinokotta. which translates to I Survived, is a song about surviving our worst mental health nightmares, surviving, and growing to become a better person.

The latter half of In the Shadow of the Midnight Sun marks a distinct shift in tone, beginning with Dead Girl Dancing. which celebrates dance as a powerful therapeutic escape from anxiety and depression. It suggests that even simple activities like a solitary walk or a leisurely stroll with a friend, whether through a serene cemetery or along a nature trail, can significantly uplift our spirits and transform our perspective.

Kaiju, drawing inspiration from the anime film End of Evangelion, showcases a pivotal shift in the band’s songwriting approach. The track prominently features an intricate blend of synthbass, synths, and guitars, all layered over a foundation of dynamic drums. This composition marks a notable departure from previous styles, embracing a rich, textured sound that captures the essence of its cinematic influence.

Higanbana addresses the challenge of accepting life’s unforeseen and often unwelcome changes. Drawing from personal experiences, the songwriter recounts the heartache of watching her father battle with dementia and a close friend’s parents struggle against cancer. These personal encounters highlight the cruel realization of facing an inevitable fate with little hope from science or medicine. Yet, Higanbana also offers a sense of comfort in recognizing that, as long as we are alive, we have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the world. On this track, guitarist Joshua Broughton’s swelling guitars adds a certain depth, complexity and beauty.

The closing track of In the Shadow of the Midnight Sun offers a surprising twist: a cover of Dolly Parton’s iconic Jolene, paying homage to the explosive rendition by the Sisters from the ’90s. However, Tears For The Dying takes a bold step away from the original, transforming the classic’s feel and tempo entirely. Adding a personal touch, the famous finger-plucked guitar riff that defines Parton’s version is masterfully executed by Adria’s uncle, Chip Stembridge, also known as Chip Young. This reinterpretation serves as a tranquil finale to the album, providing a serene closure to the emotional journey.

The mixing phase of the album saw contributions from Subvon Studio and Tom Ashton, renowned for his involvement with the iconic goth band The March Violets. However, when Ashton rejuvenated The Violets, the search for a new mixer led to another Athens, GA luminary: Jason NeSmith, celebrated for his affiliation with the post-punk Pylon Reenactment Society, who graciously assumed the mixing responsibilities for the remaining tracks.

The mastering process was entrusted to Chase Park Transduction in Athens, ensuring the album’s sound was refined and cohesive. The vinyl version of the album was pressed by a local Athens, GA plant, maintaining the production’s ties to the vibrant local music scene.

Die Folk Metal-Band KORPIKLAANI stellt ihr zwölftes Album “Rankarumpu” mit einem weiteren Song vor und haben nun auch ein Video zu “Aita” veröffentlicht. Der Song eigentlich als Instrumental geplant, doch dann kam es anders, wie Neuzugang Olli Vänskä erklärt:

“Aita’ wurde eigentlich als Instrumentalstück komponiert, oder das war zumindest die Absicht. Ich schickte Jonne eine Demoversion, und als ich ihn eine Woche später danach fragte, sagte er “Zur Hölle nein!” und gab mir den Text, den er geschrieben hatte. Und das waren gute Texte! Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Geigenriff und auch mit dem Folk-Intermezzo, das daraus geworden ist. Da passiert eine Menge interessanter Sachen!”

Im Januar teilten KORPIKLAANI ein Musikvideo zu “Saunaan” bei YouTube. Auch dieses Stück wurde von Olli Vänskä geschrieben:

“Ich komponierte ‘Saunaan’ schon Monate bevor ich überhaupt wusste, dass ich bei Korpiklaani spielen würde. Ich arbeitete an einem peppigen Folk-Metal-Song und wenig überraschend war KORPIKLAANI – Kings of Folk Metal – definitiv einer der Einflüsse.

Dann führte ein Gedanke zum anderen und plötzlich spielte ich tatsächlich für Korpiklaani und wir sprachen über Material für ein kommendes Album. Eines Abends, während einer Fahrt mit dem Festivalbus, spielte ich den Jungs ein paar Demotracks vor, und Jonne gab mir sofort ein dickes Lob. Wir haben ein bisschen am Arrangement gearbeitet und das Endergebnis ist ein ziemlich guter Song!”

“Rankarumpu” wurde mit Produzent Janne Saksa aufgenommen und erscheint am 5. April 2024 via Nuclear Blast.

Nein, in Vegar Sverre Tveitans Haut möchte ich wahrlich nicht stecken, aller Bewunderung für sein Schaffen in den vergangenen 33 Jahren zum Trotz – oder vielleicht genau deshalb. IHSAHN hat mit EMPEROR in den Neunzigern der Barbarei des Black Metal um eine intellektuelle Komponente bereichert und schließlich, als Solokünstler sein Œuvre in Richtung Progressive Metal erweitert, ohne von seiner Relevanz zu verlieren – nun ja, bis vor ein paar Jahren. „Ámr“ war der Moment, in dem ich persönlich spürte, dass seine kreativen Säfte begannen nachzulassen. Als Hörer jammert man hier noch auf hohem Niveau, die Nebelkerzen, die IHSAHN in der Folge als EPs um sich herausbrachte, ließen dann fast schon Zähne knirschen. Und jetzt, vier Jahre nach „Telemark“ und „Pharos“? Nein, da möchte ich nicht in IHSAHNs Haut stecken.

IHSAHNs erstes Album in sechs Jahren will den Wesenskern des Musikers festlegen – und hat fast nebenbei eine rein symphonische Seite.
Doch der Norweger gibt sich äußerlich unbeeindruckt von Erwartungen, mehr noch: Sein achtes Studioalbum ist schlicht „Ihsahn“ benannt – traditionell ein Zeichen dafür, dass ein Künstler es wissen und den eigenen Wesenskern freilegen will. Und in der Tat, IHSAHN schafft das Kunststück, von (fast) allem etwas zu liefern, den opulenten und extremen Progressive Metal aus seiner jüngeren Solokarriere ebenso, wie symphonische Raserei der ganz späten EMPEROR-Phase – und fügt noch eine rein symphonische Seite hinzu. „Ihsahn“ spannt sich weit auf, will nichts von „Understatement“ wissen und ist ein einziges „Hier bin ich wieder!“

„Ihsahn“ gelingt das Kunststück, stilistisch breit aufgestellt zu sein und doch recht kompakt zu klingen, auch wenn einige der Songs, gerade in der ersten Hälfte etwas fragmentiert wirken. „The Promethean Spark“ ist gleich zweifache Selbstreferenz – einmal natürlich in Richtung „Prometheus – The Discipline Of Fire And Demise“, und andererseits ein IHSAHN-Nummer-Sicher-Song. Wirklich mitreißend und berührend ist dieser Auftakt nicht, und außerdem schnell vergessen, da „Pilgrimmage To Oblivion“ am ehesten den rasenden EMPEROR-Spirit wieder aufleben lässt. Das kurze „Twice Born“ beginnt ebenfalls aggressiv und mausert sich zu einem kleinen Hit, während „A Taste Of The Ambrosia“ dann zahn- und richtungslos vor sich hin plätschert.

„Ihsahn“ pendelt zwischen ruhigen Progressive Metal-Songs und Spät-EMPEROR-Furor – lediglich die Experimentierfreude lässt IHSAHN außen vor.
Diese Attitüde, ein großes, karriereübergreifendes Album zu schaffen, überschattet die Kreativität an manch weiterer Stelle. IHSAHN will das Beste aus sich und seinen Fähigkeiten herausholen, dabei waren es doch unperfekte, aber umso lebendigere Alben wie „After“, „Eremita“ und „Das Seelenbrechen“, die der Experimentierfreude wegen groß wurden und unter die Haut gingen. IHSAHN scheint zu versessen darauf zu sein, ein Opus Magnum erreichen zu wollen, und gerade in der zweiten Hälfte von „Ihsahn“ strebt er weiter danach. „Blood Trails To Love“ lässt sich nochmal Zeit mit einem großen Chorus und einer gewissen Melancholie, bevor er in „Hubris And Blue Devils“ wieder die sprichwörtliche Handbremse löst. Das knapp achtminütige Stück ist wild, verspielt, rhythmisch anspruchsvoll, hat starke Riffs und einen beeindruckenden Aufbau. Auch das abschließende, neunminütige und überaus kurzweilige „At The Heart Of All Things Broken“ zeigt IHSAHN voll in seiner Kraft: Ein dramatisches, episches und dynamisch sehr geschickt arrangiertes Stück, das mehr eine Geschichte erzählt als profanes Songwriting – und das erste und leider auch einzige Stück, das auch emotional berührt.

Die stilistische Bandbreite ist Segen und Fluch zugleich auf „Ihsahn“. Denn einerseits ist IHSAHN ein kurzweiliges und sehr abwechslungsreiches Album gelungen, andererseits klingt die Musik stellenweise doch wie Dienst nach Vorschrift. Die richtig guten Songs stechen allerdings umso deutlicher heraus. IHSAHN selbst ist als Gitarrist und Sänger so souverän, wie man es von ihm seit jeher kennt – sein Niveau ist so hoch, dass es fast schon langweilig ist. Das Drumming von Tobias Solbakk und Tobias Andersen passt sich den Kompositionen gut an, sticht aber auch nicht besonders heraus.

IHSAHN will alles, und sogar noch mehr – scheitert aber am eigenen Anspruch.
Und dann ist da noch die orchestrale Seite von „Ihsahn“. Die Metal-Version von „Ihsahn“ ist nämlich schon reichlich symphonisch geprägt, was nicht wundert, bedenkt man, dass IHSAHN die Musik hauptsächlich am Klavier schrieb. Die Orchester-Arrangements sind in die Metal-Version der Musik außerordentlich gut eingewoben: Sie erweitern die Songs, ohne prätentiös zu wirken. Stehen die Stücke auf der Orchester-Seite allein da, wirkt das Ergebnis tatsächlich überraschend cineastisch und Namen wie Bernard Herrmann und Jerry Goldsmith drängen sich förmlich auf. Dass IHSAHN die Musik so geschrieben und arrangiert hat, ist durchaus beeindruckend, und an mancher Stelle ist „Ihsahn“ in seiner rein orchestralen Fassung spannender als in der Metal-Version. Ironischerweise sind die spannenden Metalsongs aber die weniger mitreißenden Orchesterstücke.

Sechs Jahre nach seinem letzten vollen Album fährt IHSAHN alle Register auf. Die Muße hat ihn geküsst, bis hin zur Hybris. „Ihsahn“ will alles, und sogar noch mehr. Somit ist das achte Soloalbum des Norwegers ein Großereignis im extremen Metal, scheitert aber dennoch am eigenen Anspruch. Neben einer Reihe spannender Songs, haben sich Stücke eingeschlichen, die Dienst nach Vorschrift erahnen lassen. Wirklich berühren will IHSAHN sein Publikum dieses Mal nicht, und staunen lässt er es auch zu selten. All der Pomp kann nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass Vegard Sverre Tveitan auch dieses Mal nicht zu voller Form aufläuft.

Die Symphonic Death Metal-Band THY SHINING CURSE hat nun auch ein Video zu “Lenore” bei YouTube veröffentlicht, den Track gab es bislang nur als Stream. Er stammt vom  neues Album “Theurgia”

Bereits vor einigen Wochen teilte die Band auch ein Musikvideo zur Single “Melmoth” bei YouTube.

“Theurgia” sei eine Sammlung von sieben musikalischen Riten, die sich um eine gemeinsame thematische Achse drehen: die Überschreitung der physischen Welt. “Theurgia” bedeutet im Griechischen “göttliches Werk” und wurde als Begriff von den Neuplatonikern entwickelt. Er beschreibt eine Reihe von magischen Handlungen, die darauf abzielen, die menschliche Seele mit einer Hierarchie höherer Wesen zu verbinden, die zum höchsten Wesen, dem so genannten “Einen”, führen.

Veröffentlicht wird das Debütabum am 16. Februar 2024 via ViciSolum Productions.

Since their emergence on the scene in 2007, the intriguingly named Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger! — a moniker so audacious it demands to be punctuated several times over — has been turning heads, not least that of literary luminary and master of the macabre, Stephen King. This Italian export, known for their compelling fusion of sounds and energies, has shared billing with an eclectic array of musical talents, from the noise rock of Male Bonding to the pioneering feminist punk of The Slits, the frosty cool Danish post-punk of Iceage, and the post-rock soundscapes of Mogwai. One can only imagine the backstage conversations, a delightful cacophony of genres and generations.

The band is set to release their new LP, Bloom, on February 23 through To Lose La Track and Coypu Records. TSTT’s music artfully merges their signature sound with new explorations, drawing deeply from the mid-90s American alternative, and indie rock vibe. Embracing the defiant essence of 90s alternative rock with a dash of shoegaze, their sound is evocative of  Sonic Youth, No Age, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. TSTT’s approach to music redefines the traditional song structure with their unique use of off-tune guitars and a rich overlay of feedback.

The band released a self-directed, languid video for Stones. (Special guest appearance by that IKEA rug beloved by musicians around the globe.)

Bloom highlights Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger!’s (TSTT) capacity to expand their musical boundaries and captivate listeners. The album serves as a platform for the band to explore various styles, from the grunge-infused Dark Age / Dark Thoughts to the post-shoegaze influenced Endless. Each track is notable for its quality and creativity, particularly the intense rendition of Memory and Empty Pool, which is distinguished by its monumental, feedback-heavy guitar work. Recorded with the help of long-time collaborator Filippo Strang, known for his work with Kurt Vile, Bloom exemplifies TSTT’s unique noisy, lo-fi sound, marking a significant development.

In the autumn of 2008, Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger! performed at the CMJ in New York alongside the legendary The Slits, and their single The Architects of Despair from the debut album Be Yr Own Shit was featured in the soundtrack of Lee Madsen’s film Hated. By 2014, their album Forever Young successfully captured the essence of TSTT’s vibrant live performances, marking a significant step in their creative journey with a more electrified sound over 43 minutes that resonated with the energy of their live shows. The band made notable returns to SXSW in 2011, 2015, and 2017.

Continuing this trajectory, Corners (2017) built on the foundation laid by Forever Young, yet ventured into diverse musical territories. It blended fuzzy indie rock with intense aggression, characterized by crashing guitars, anthemic riffs, emotional vocals, and exceptional drumming. The album’s high-quality production and the standout single Weird Times exemplified their songwriting skill while maintaining a raw and driving aesthetic.

THY SHINING CURSE wurde 2021 gegründet und ist das musikalische Soloprojekt des Death-Metal-Initianten Leonidas, dessen Hauptaugenmerk auf der Ausübung der hierurgischen Kunst durch symphonische Methexis und hermetische Bildsprache liegt. Die Band hat sich der Vision ihres Gründers verschrieben, eine eindringliche mystische Erfahrung zu schaffen, indem sie die archetypischen Instinkte des Menschen durch einen kraftvollen Symbolismus anruft, der den Prinzipien der pythagoreischen Tradition, der eleusinischen Mysterien, des Neuplatonismus und der westlichen Esoterik folgt. Die Darstellung ihrer Mitglieder wird bewusst vermieden. Stattdessen fungieren zwei geheimnisvolle Figuren als visuelle Repräsentanten der Band, Celeus und Celeucis. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, das Hörerlebnis durch eine unterschwellige Einführung in die visuelle Symbolsprache zu ergänzen und als moderne Hierophanten zu fungieren.

Das an Intensität und Harmonien reiche Debütalbum der Band ist eine Sammlung von sieben musikalischen Riten, die sich um eine gemeinsame thematische Achse drehen: die Überschreitung der physischen Welt. „Theurgia“ bedeutet im Griechischen „göttliches Werk“ und wurde als Begriff von den Neuplatonikern entwickelt. Er beschreibt eine Reihe von magischen Handlungen, die darauf abzielen, die menschliche Seele mit einer Hierarchie höherer Wesen zu verbinden, die zum höchsten Wesen, dem so genannten „Einen“, führen.

Die Black Metal-Band GRIFFON hat nach dem Lyric-Video zu “L’Homme du Tarn” mit “À L’insurrection” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “De Republica” veröffentlicht.

“Dieses Lied handelt von der Julirevolution von 1830. Nach einem antidemokratischen Staatsstreich von König Karl X. und seiner Regierung kam es in Frankreich am 27., 28. und 29. Juli zu einer dreitägigen Revolution, die als die “Drei glorreichen Tage” bekannt wurde. Dies bedeutete das Ende der legitimistischen Monarchie. Der Text am Ende des Liedes stammt von Victor Hugo”, erklärt die Band.

“De Republica” ist nach “Har HaKarmel” (2016) und “Ὸ θεὀς ὸ βασιλεὐς” (2020) das dritte Album der Franzosen aus Paris und wird am 16. Februar 2024 via Les Acteurs de l’Ombre Productions erscheinen. Das neue Album taucht thematisch in die Geschichte Frankreichs und seiner Revolutionen ein. Entsprechend auch das Cover-Artwork von Adam Burke.

In a room that had seen more apologies than a confession booth, he sat alone, nursing his second bottle of two-buck chuck. The joint was one of those dime-a-dozen flophouses with a neon sign out front that buzzed like a trapped fly, promising “luxury” to anyone who hadn’t been around the block enough to know better.

He’d laid out rose petals on the bed, a touch of class that felt as out of place as a nun in a gin joint. The petals were supposed to spell romance, but now they just looked like evidence at a crime scene – where the victim was his own heart. The bottles on the table were halfway to nowhere, just like him. He’d come here with a pocket full of dreams, a head full of sweet nothings, and a saucy swatch of leopard-print, but as the night dragged on, those fleeting fancies faded.

He kept glancing at the door; clutching the phone; but it remained as still and silent as a tombstone. The realization hit him like a left hook from a heavyweight—tonight, the only thing he’d be spooning with…was his own disillusionment.

With every sip, the room spun a little faster, a carousel ride with no brass ring in sight. The rose petals, once a symbol of lustful passion, now just mocked him with their soft, wilted edges, a reminder of what could have been, but wasn’t.

In this city, a guy could get lost between the cracks of the sidewalks, and tonight, he felt about as significant as a raindrop in a downpour. The only thing left to do was pour another glass of cheap champers and let the night swallow him whole, another lonely soul adrift in the neon-lit canyons of despair.

Ryder Houston’s Total Reciprocity single and video is a masterwork in modern noir, merging downtempo vibes with raw trip-hop beats to forge a sound distinctly his own. His influence is palpable, infiltrating the discographies of top artists and challenging genre conventions, creating something entirely new. Within this innovative space, Houston conjures a blend of nostalgia and innovation.

The latest from Houston is a three-track EP, Total Reciprocity, which includes a haunting cover of I Never Dreamed Someone Like You Could Love Someone Like Me from the 1976 horror film Carrie, showcasing Houston’s skill in reinterpreting classic sounds for today’s audience. Total Reciprocity  is inspired by alternative artists like Ultra-era Depeche Mode, Garbage, and Nine Inch Nails, while the more electronic tracks owe their lush sound to downtempo artists like Massive Attack, Space, Portishead, and Sneaker Pimps.

Houston is set to embark on an East Coast tour, where he will captivate audiences with performances that rely on nothing more than his voice, in-ear monitors, and a special backing track mixer, proving his coolness is as much about his presence as it is about his music.

Die Schafe im Wolfspelz: Maskiert und waffenbewehrt präsentieren sich DYMYTRY in der Photoshop-Apokalypse. Nicht ganz ohne Selbstironie, wohlgemerkt, wie die diversen tierischen Begleiter auf dem Frontcover nahelegen. Doch während die coolen Typen die Explosionen in ihrem Rücken keines Blickes würdigen, haben sie musikalisch ein überraschendes Faible für schmackhafte Melodien.

„Five Angry Men“ bedient sich dafür der üblichen Stilmittel des zeitgenössischen Modern Metals: Zahlreiche Synth-Spuren schmücken die eingängigen Strukturen aus, während Frontmann AL nahezu ausschließlich auf seine Singstimme setzt. Dabei wechselt der Sänger zwischen sanften Tönen und Reibeisenpower, was wie im Opener „Enemy List“ gerne auch gegeneinander ausgespielt wird. Wenig verwunderlich, schließlich gehört Laut-Leise-Dynamik – ruhige Strophe gegen kraftvollen Refrain – im Genre ohnehin zum guten Ton.

DYMYTRY legen auf “Five Angry Men” auch mal den Finger in die Wunde
Den erhebenden Refrain von „Everything Is Black“ kontrastieren DYMYTRY dagegen mit Thrash-Riffing und einem rockigen Solo. Keine Frage, das Quintett versteht sein Handwerk und hat zugleich ein ausgezeichnetes Gespür für zugängliche Arrangements. Mitsingen können wir die zehn Stücke daher schon beim ersten Durchlauf, richtig festsetzen kann sich dagegen kaum eines für längere Zeit, da die Band ihre Komfortzone nicht verlassen will: Wendungen, Ausbrüche oder Alleinstellungsmerkmale suchen wir auf „Five Angry Men“ ebenso vergebens wie ein eigenes Profil.

Ob das AGAINST THE CURRENT-Cover “Legends Never Die” nun mit einem vergleichsweise harten Breakdown aufwartet, der Titeltrack mit Nu-Metal-Anstrich besticht oder „Wake Me Up (Before We Die)“ ein wenig Dance-Flair à la AMARANTHE versprüht, eine gänzlich eigene Handschrift ist kaum zu erkennen. Vielmehr fühlen sich DYMYTRY oftmals im erweiterten Fahrwasser FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCHs wie zu Hause, können hier aber immerhin mit rundum soliden Songwriting und gesellschaftskritischen Texten punkten. So nimmt sich Sänger AL im abgeklärten Rocker „Three Steps To Hell“ nicht nur wachsende Apathie angesichts des Klimawandels zur Brust, sondern mahnt in „1939“ nachdrücklich vor den Auswirkungen eines drohenden Weltkriegs.

Die satirische Maske legen DYMYTRY nur selten ab
Erst wenn DYMYTRY die satirische Maske zeitweise ablegen und etwa im nachdenklichen „The Revenant“ ernste Töne anschlagen, dürfen wir kurzzeitig hinter die Fassade blicken, wo uns eine durchaus reflektiert agierende Band begegnet. Hier zeigen uns die fünf Musiker, dass sie diesen ganzen überdrehten Aufriss eigentlich gar nicht nötig hätten, aber mit Satire und einem Augenzwinkern ganz bewusst das erträglich machen, was sonst schlaflose Nächte bereiten würde – skrupellose Wölfe gibt es schließlich mehr als genug auf dieser Welt.

Die Post-Metal-Band DEFYING hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Tempus Infaustum” mit “The Fugue” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Wadera” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Nexus Artificial” (2014) das zweite Album der Polen, die 2016 auch die EP “The Splinter of Light We Misread” veröffentlicht haben.

“Wadera” ist ein Konzeptalbum, das von dem polnischen Horrorfilm “Der Wolf” (1983) und der Kurzgeschichte “Wadera” (1977) von Jerzy Gierałtowski inspiriert ist. Das Album ist eine musikalische Geschichte über Rache aus dem Jenseits, erzählt im Geiste der dunklen Romantik.

Produziert und aufgenommen wurde das Album von Drummer Tomasz Semeniuk, während es von Filip Hałucha gemixt und gemastert wurde. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Bassist Paweł Siemaszko. Erscheinen wird das Album am 23. Februar 2024 via These Hands Melt.

Background/Info: Debut album for this German collective which seems to gain name and reputation in their homeland. The self-titled opus features eleven songs.

Content: From the very first notes you’ll recognize the typical ‘troubadour’, Medieval style of this formation. The songs have been composed by a mix of acoustic instruments and synth parts while you’ll get dreamy, Ethereal, female vocals on top. The sound reminds me of an offspring between Qntal and Corvus Corax.

+ + + : This band doesn’t bring any innovation but deals with a well-crafted interpretation of Medieval music which has been adapted into a  freestyle. There’s a place for a crossover with other influences and genres. Instruments like flute and bagpipes inject a part of mystery and fascination while the vocals are elevating some passages to a higher dimension.

– – – : I sometimes get the feeling the band is still in search of their own sound. Some parts of the album sound like a melting pot of influences but it’s not really a point.

Conclusion: Totentanz Strumpfsockig bring us an interesting and (free)-styled interpretation of Medieval music.

Brooklyn BB reminisces about a passionate, fleeting romance, marked by carefree nights, intimate moments, and the bittersweet longing for the past. There’s a reflection of the fast-paced nature of the relationship, acknowledging its transient essence while expressing a deep, unchanging affection: Brooklyn BB is a term of endearment that captures the essence of their connection and the intensity of their memories together.

“Brooklyn BB is my bittersweet love story about looking back on that perfect day of the one that got away. I put this video off for a while in editing because this song haunted me for the very reason I wrote it. Nostalgia is so deceptive. It’s like intoxicating love that you feel even stronger when she’s gone. To confuse loss for love…to not know the difference. To be lost in maybe an idea of someone rather than the reality and not care. There’s no logic, just the ineffable. This video is visceral more than narrative based, and I wanted to encapsulate a moment I had with someone from my past. Like an old 16mm French story about love in the city. It’s my most intimate song yet about a life and place I don’t have anymore but still think about all the time.”

The video was filmed on five different cameras, two separate trips, and in two different states on multiple days.

“It was a real journey,” says Draeger. “I definitely couldn’t have done it without Ash Rose Daniels, who I didn’t even know when I asked her to be in the video. Now we are so close and she was the perfect person for my romance story in Brooklyn.”

Die Grunge-Band MARISA AND THE MOTHS hat mit “What Doesn’t Kill You” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Marisa And The Moths” (2019) das zweite Album der Briten, die dazwischen eine Handvoll Singles veröffentlicht haben. Erscheinen wird das Album am 3. Mai 2024. Mit “SAD” hat die Band nun eine weitere Vorab-Single veröffentlicht.

“In diesem Song geht es um die Scham, traurig zu sein, während man nach außen hin ein anderes Bild abgibt. Es geht um die Herausforderung, ein fröhliches Gesicht zu machen, während man innerlich das Gefühl hat, dass die Welt zusammenbricht”, erklärt Marisa Rodriguez.

Im Jänner hat die Band den Video-Clip “Who Are You Waiting For?” veröffentlicht. Der Song erforscht die Nachwirkungen einer toxischen Beziehung und behandelt Themen wie Selbstfindung, Selbstbestimmung und Widerstandskraft.

“In diesem Song geht es darum, die eigene Macht zurückzuerobern und zu erkennen, dass die Liebe, die man einst mit jemandem zu haben glaubte, nicht mehr da ist – und vielleicht war sie es auch nie. Es geht darum, seinen eigenen Wert nach einer missbräuchlichen Beziehung wiederzuentdecken, seine Stärken anzunehmen und zu erkennen, dass man gut genug ist, auch wenn das in der Situation, in der man sich befindet, schwer zu glauben ist”, erklärt Frontfrau Marisa Rodriguez.
