“Dies ist ein Lied über das Vergehen, genauer gesagt, über das Vergehen unserer Liebsten. Es erzählt von dem Moment der irrationalen Verleugnung der Tatsache, dass diese Person niemals zurückkehren wird”, erklärt Rafał Lipka.

KIRLIAN CAMERA comment: “What if ‘Radio Signals for the Dying’ is spread across in the ether with a pair of blackish wings?”, vocalist extraordinaire Elena Alice Fossi asks. “Music should not fear the Icarus Effect, music should be able to fly beyond the sun, indifferent to atavistic human fear. That’s what it was born for, and it’s therefore that magic we’d like to see happen – at the very least. We’re in a matrix inhabited by shells and biased apparitions, while we, like a few others here, want to live with dignity. The fight between the two worlds is emerging moment by moment with more force and it’s not by blood that we win or lose. The real conflict is embodied in essences and behaviors. Those who become aware that their existence is on different planes attracts the anger and revulsion of others who remain blinded by this system like a moth by the headlights of a car. The knife that shows the way
In the bloodstained celluloid of cinematic history, the Italian Horror genre of the 60s and 70s, especially Giallo, stands as a testament to a time when storytelling was as much about the ambiance as it was about the narrative. Giallo, with its distinctive blend of mystery, thriller, and horror, wrapped in a visually rich tapestry, set the stage for a cinematic experience that was both enthralling and unnerving. It was this era of Italian cinema that mastered the art of suspense and style, leaving audiences captivated by its vivid colors, intricate plots, and haunting scores.

Drawing inspiration from this influential period, “Devil’s Night” by Gae Vinci emerges as a contemporary ode to the classic Giallo films, intertwining the essence of Italian horror with the pulsating beats of modern music. The track, a kinetic and propulsive wall of sound, evokes the exhilarating rush of a psychedelic ghost train hurtling through a tunnel with witches at the helm, ready for a head-on collision. The buzzing synth sounds and siren-like guitars create a sonic landscape that is both mesmerizing and formidable, reminiscent of the raw energy of Jesus and Mary Chain and Ravonettes, while also paying homage to the likes of The Black Angels and Trentemøller.

“Devil’s Night” by Gae Vinci, graced with the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Misha Chylkova, transcends the boundaries of a mere song. It invites the listener on a compelling voyage through a world shrouded in the mystery of the past colliding with the present.

Like the single’s cover, the animated video for “Devil’s Night” is a clever homage to the lurid, technicolor nightmares of 70s Italian Giallo cinema. Adorned with evocative symbols of dice, playing cards, and dart boards, the intro to the imagined film takes the audience on a macabre journey through the glamorous yet unsettling streets of a place such as Monaco, where every twist and turn becomes a gamble where the stakes are life or death.

While the animation and direction come from the brilliant Adriano Di Mauro, Gae conceived the blood-soaked vision:

“After immense research on colours and imagery of the ’70s, I decided to pursue the idea of mixing a classic Lyric video with the credits of the song itself, thus resulting in sort of an opening title sequence to a movie. And I really loved that idea.”

Gae Vinci, a Sicilian-born music producer now based in Milan, has carved a unique path in the music industry with his refusal to be boxed into any single genre. His musical journey, which began in the mid-2000s under various monikers, has always been characterized by a deep dive into the eclectic realms of sound, from electronic shoegaze to folk. His latest album, “Lonely Ballads,” represents a convergence of his myriad musical experiences, presented under the authenticity of his real identity.

In late 2022, Vinci took a significant step in his career by founding the independent label “BLOOD ON THE TRACKS,” aiming to create a platform for the music he believes in and produces. This label serves as the launching pad for “Devil’s Night,” a track that not only showcases Vinci’s innovative soundscapes but also his ability to create a narrative that resonates with the listener on a profound level.

Misha Chylkova, the ‘Czech Londoner,’ brings a unique blend of cultural influences and vocal prowess to “Devil’s Night.” Her journey from the streets of former Czechoslovakia to London, and finally to Italy, has imbued her music with a richness and depth that is rare. Her collaboration with Vinci on “Devil’s Night” marks the beginning of what promises to be an enthralling musical partnership, with her voice perfectly complementing the track’s dark, evocative themes.

After a number of EPs and the mini-album “Kill your Idols”, the Belgian electro act Ultra Sunn presents its official full length debut album, “US”.

The band says this about their debut album: “The album is called ‘US’, like the initials of Ultra Sunn. In addition to being a reference to two bands that we love, VU (Velvet Underground) and AM (Arctic Monkeys), it reflects the more personal texts in this album – the bond between us (Gaelle and Sam) being stronger than ever, a new musician joining us on tour, and the bond that we have created with our audience / how the concerts are carried and experienced all together with strength and love. It’s our album, it’s yours, it’s about US.”

Based in Brussels, Belgium Ultra Sunn was formed in late 2019 by frontman Sam Huge and keyboardist/producer Gaelle Souflet. In 2023, they were joined on stage by keyboardist and percussionist Alexis Andrigo.

The Jesus and Mary Chain are catching a new wave of nostalgia with “Girl 71,” the latest single from their much-anticipated album Glasgow Eyes, slated for a March 22 release. Following the footsteps of “jamcod” and “Chemical Animal,” this track is a blast from the past, yet feels entirely new, launched with gusto via Fuzz Club.

Cranking out tunes with the infectious zest of organ-led power-pop, laced with a raw garage-rock bite, “Girl 71” finds its home in the most playful corner of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s often gloom-laden discography. This catchy anthem serves as an escape from the depths of self-doubt, offering salvation through the eyes of another. The track weaves together the swagger of Lou Reed with a post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys-esque groove while also channeling the playfulness of Split Enz.

And when Jim Reid’s unmistakable, laid-back vocal swagger enters, perfectly complemented by the sugary harmonies of Rachel Conte, the effect is akin to finding a piece of bubblegum in a leather jacket pocket—unexpectedly sweet and perfectly aligned with the band’s edgy charm. The blend of Reid’s drawl with Conte’s harmonies creates a sonic dichotomy that’s equally candy as it is the gleam of a switchblade knife (or a comb disguised as one.)

Recorded in the hallowed halls of Mogwai’s Castle of Doom studio and produced by the Reid brothers themselves, “Girl 71” showcases The Jesus and Mary Chain’s mastery over their sound. The track adds depth to the upcoming Glasgow Eyes album and underscores the band’s ability to evolve their signature style while staying true to their roots.

Anticipation for the album has already seen three vinyl formats sell out, but double-colored vinyl and double-black vinyl are still available, both of which feature artwork from William Reid. The album release has moved back slightly to March 22nd due to a delay in vinyl production.

In addition to the album release and to celebrate their 40th anniversary, The Jesus and Mary Chain are set to embark on an extensive tour across the UK, Ireland, and Europe starting in March. The high demand for their performances is evident, as additional shows have been added in both London and Manchester following the rapid sell-out of initial dates. Moreover, their festival plans for 2024 are shaping up, with confirmed appearances at Festival Tomavistas (Spain), Paredes De Coura (Portugal), and Cruel World (USA).

The UK, Ireland, and Europe leg has just been boosted with confirmation of special guests Aircooled (featuring JAMC drummer Justin Welch) and deathcrash, while their summer festival schedule is also taking shape.

Patrick Mameli hat sich durch 38 Jahre PESTILENCE gwühlt und Songs für ein Best-of-Album ausgesucht. Die Complation trägt den Titel “Levels of Perception” und besteht aus zwölf Neuaufnahmen, sie erscheint am 26. April 2024 via Agonia Records.

PESTILENCE-Boss Patrick Mameli erklärt, warum er sich mit “Levels of Perception” einen lange gehegten Wunsch erfüllt:

“Ein Best-of-Album wollte ich schon immer machen. Denn es bedeutet, dass  ich in der Vergangenheit etwas erreicht habe, das auch heute noch relevant ist. Songs auszuwählen, die ich in der Vergangenheit komponiert habe und sie in die Gegenwart zu transportieren – das hat einen großen Wert für mich. Für die Aufnahmen habe ich mit  Michiel van der Plicht (Schlagzeug), Rutger van Noordenburg (Gitarre) und Joost van der Graaf (Bass) gearbeitet. Der Titel des Albums ist ‘Levels of Perception’ (Ebenen der Wahrnehmung), er erklärt, was mit den Songs passiert ist: Sie wurden von verschiedenen Musikern mit eigenen Ansichten und musikalischen Fähigkeiten neu interpretiert. “

Schon Anfang April brechen PESTILENCE zu einer dreiwöchigen Europatour mit CARNATION und BODYFARM auf, die “Black Death Over Europe”-Tour stoppt für Konzerte in München, Trier, Berlin sowie Wien (A).

Nachdem AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE im Okober 2023 die Single “No Pain No Gain” veröffentlicht haben, kommt nun auch ein neues Album: Die vierte Platte des Projektes um Tim Lambesis (AS I LAY DYING) heißt “Quad Brutal” und erscheint am 23. Februar 2024. Einen Clip zum Track “Judgment Day” kann man sich jetzt bei YouTube ansehen. Zu hören ist auch Gast-Sänger Ricky Hoover (OV SULFUR).

Darüber hinaus gibt es auch ein Video zu “Destroy The Machines” bei YouTube.

Mit “Don’t Be Lazy” hatten AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE in Dezember einen weiteren Song daraus im Netz geteilt.

Als Gastmusiker sind an “Quad Brutal” beteiligt: Dany Lambesis (HELLBØRN), die Bodybuilder Craig Golias und Rob Bailey, Ricky Hoover (OV SULFUR, ex-SUFFOKATE) sowie die Gitarristen Angel Vivaldi, Clayton King, Brandon Richter (BLEEDING THROUGH) und Joey Alarcon (WOLVES AT THE GATE, BORN THROUGH FIRE).

Tim Lambesis sagt über “Quad Brutal” folgendes:

“Es ist eine große Verantwortung, von Govournator  damit beauftragt zu werden, die Brutalität der 80er Jahre, Bodybuilding und den judgment day in einem Album zu vereinen. Es muss natürlich brutal klingen. Dann musste ich für gute Refrains sorgen, damit die Leute die Weisheit von Ahhnolds Worten nicht vergessen. Und da es das vierte Album ist, musste ich im Fitnessstudio wirklich meinen Quads (Musculus quadriceps, ein vierköpfiger Muskel des Oberschenkels) arbeiten, um das Gewicht der Welt wie auf dem Albumcover zu tragen, wenn es eines Tages an mich weitergereicht wird. Das Ergebnis ist ein Album, das viel abwechslungsreicher ist als jedes andere AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE-Album und mit Abstand das brutalste, wenn man alle 10 Songs hört.”

Die Progressive Post-Metal-Band HIPPOTRAKTOR hat mit “Stasis” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Meridian” (2021) das zweite Album der Belgier aus Mechelen und wird am 7. Juni 2024 via Pelagic Records erscheinen. Gemixt und gemastert wurde das Album von Gitarrist und Songwriter Chiaran Verheyden in den Daft Studios.

“”Stasis” erzählt eine Geschichte über die menschliche Natur”, erklärt Sänger Stefan De Graef. “Als der Protagonist eine neue Welt betritt, in der er zum ersten Mal mit anderen Menschen konfrontiert wird, macht er sich mit ihren Sitten und Gebräuchen vertraut und entdeckt Großzügigkeit und Empathie, aber auch Gier, Eifersucht und Hass.”

Die Hard Rock / AOR-Band HOLLER hat nach “Do You Believe” mit “I Don’t Want” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Reborn” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der von Sänger Terence Holler (Ex-ELDRITCH) ins Leben gerufenen Band. An den Instrumenten werken Gitarrist Denis Chimenti, Keyboarder Matteo Chimenti, Bassist Leonardo Peruzzi und Drummer Alex Gasperini.

“Reborn” wurde mit einem Cover-Artwork von Luca “Zeero” Zironi ausgestattet und wird am 22. März 2024 via Scarlet Records erscheinen.

Øystein G. Brun sagt über “Moon”: ”

“Moon” stammt aus der Feder von ICS Vortex und ist ein weitere Schritt in unserem smusikalischen Abenteuer. Wie schon bei “Up North” sind wir begeistert, dass wir wieder mit Costin Chioreanu / Twilight 13 Media zusammenarbeiten konnten, um den Song visuell zu vervollständigen. Wir hoffen, dass ihr das Video genauso genießt wie wir! We truly love it!”

Mit einem Video zu “Nordic Anthem” haben BORKNAGAR im Januar die zweite Single des Albums im Netz geteilt.

Den Song und seine Bedeutung fasst die Band so zusammen:

“So viele Götter. So viele Überzeugungen. So viele Konflikte. In “Nordic Anthem” geht es um die Ablehnung jeder Art von Doktrin, ob religiös oder politisch. Es geht darum, seine Natur, sein Inneres, Kraft und Freiheit zu finden. Unsere Perspektive ist eine nordische – da kommen wir schließlich her. Unsere Haltung ist universell: Finde eigene Werte, das eigene Erbe und vertraue darauf, um dich gegen Götter und Autoritäten zu wehren, die versuchen, Doktrinen durchzusetzen, um dich zu kontrollieren oder zu korrumpieren. Dies ist unsere Hymne. Wir knien vor keinem Gott nieder!”

“Fall” besteht aus acht Stücken mit einer Gesamtspielzeit von rund 54 Minuten. Die erste Single “Summits” steht seit einiger Zeit als Visualizer-Clip bei YouTube bereit.

Gründungsmitglied Øystein G. Brun erklärt zur neuen Platte:

“Wir sind sehr stolz darauf, euch allen unser 12. Album mit dem Titel ‘Fall’ zu präsentieren, ein weiteres Kapitel unserer musikalischen Reise. In vielerlei Hinsicht stellt “Fall” eine Fortsetzung von ‘True North’ dar, aber wie immer stoßen wir weiter und weiter vor, um noch breitere und anspruchsvollere Horizonte zu erreichen. Musikalisch sind wir unserem Erbe treu geblieben, aber wir sind mit Sicherheit durch Feuer und Eis gegangen, um unseren bisher höchsten Gipfel zu erreichen. Obwohl ‘Fall’ ein breites Spektrum an musikalischen und lyrischen Ideen repräsentiert, basiert das grundlegende Thema des Albums auf der Faszination und Wertschätzung für die Randgebiete des Lebens. Jene Orte und Wesen in der weiten Peripherie unserer eigenen Existenz, die nur sehr wenige zu Gesicht bekommen oder gar kennenlernen – die aber dennoch für unsere Existenz von grundlegender Bedeutung sind. Eine Tour ohne Limits versprechen ANY GIVEN DAY, dabei war das erste schon viele Wochen im Voraus erreicht. Dass die Tickets für den Halt in München bereits im vergangenen Jahr zur Neige gingen, überrascht rückblickend betrachtet kaum, schließlich ist die hiesige Backstage Halle für die deutsche Metalcore-Band eigentlich vollkommen unterdimensioniert. Nicht umsonst stand man während der letzten beiden Gastspiele 2019 und 2022 auf der größeren Bühne des anliegenden Werks.

Ein wenig Exklusivität haftet der bevorstehenden Show somit an: Vielleicht ist es sogar die letzte Gelegenheit, das Quintett in einem solch intimen Rahmen zu erleben: Auge in Auge, ohne Fotograben und dadurch eben auch ganz nah. Die Stimmung vor den Toren ist trotz der kleinen Verzögerung am Einlass entsprechend losgelöst. Natürlich wegen der unmittelbar bevorstehenden Albumpräsentation, aber natürlich auch aufgrund des Supportprogramms der „Limitless“-Tour, welches neben den US-Amerikanern OF VIRTUE mit DOOMCRUSHER ein brandneues Projekt auf die Bretter schickt.

DOOMCRUSHER

Obwohl das Quintett erst Anfang des Jahres seine Debüt-Single veröffentlicht hat, kann man in den eigenen Reihen auf geballte Erfahrung zählen: Neben Jean Bormann (RAGE) greift ANY GIVEN DAY-Gitarrist Andy Posdziech in die Saiten – volles Programm also für den Musiker, der sich die Doppelschicht aber kaum anmerken lässt. Von der ersten Sekunde an zeigt sich das Gespann motiviert und gut gelaunt, wobei vor allem das breite Grinsen des unermüdlichen Shouters Marv schnell ansteckend wirkt.

Den Rest erledigt der moderne und dabei doch abwechslungsreiche Metalcore DOOMCRUSHERs, welcher mal mit tanzbarer Synth-Untermalung an eine treibende Version von THE BROWNING erinnert, nur um kurz darauf mit kraftvollen Clean-Vocals in der Schnittmenge von ANY GIVEN DAY und AS I LAY DYING zu landen. Insbesondere der raue Klargesang Jean Bormanns harmoniert hervorragend mit der klaren Stimme von Bassist Rob Lee, was auch dem Publikum im Backstage nicht verborgen bleibt.

DOOMCRUSHER ziehen in kurzer Zeit das Publikum auf ihre Seite

Konnten wir die Leiber im Pit während des Openers noch an einer Hand abzählen, wird es im Zentrum schnell unübersichtlich, als die Münchner:innen auf Kommando vom Boden abheben oder zwischen Soli und Breakdowns die ersten Kreise ziehen. Dass es also nach 25 Minuten mit der Single „Breakout“ bereits wieder Abschied nehmen heißt, ist geradezu bedauerlich. Immerhin hätten wohl nur noch ein paar Augenblicke gefehlt, um das minütlich auftauende Publikum endgültig zum Explodieren zu bringen.

OF VIRTUE

Dass OF VIRTUE im Anschluss mit ihrem groove-betonten Alternative Metal eine leicht andere Baustelle beackern, soll dem Quartett nicht zum Nachteil gereichen. Der Aufforderung, während „Cold Blooded“ die Smartphone-Leuchten im Takt zu schwenken, kommt die Backstage Halle gerne nach, nur um den Einsatz von selbst zu erhöhen, wenn Songs à la „A.N.X.I.E.T.Y.“ oder „True Colors“ ins härtere Extrem abdriften. Circle Pit und Breakdown-Gewitter funktionieren heute Abend trotz der etwas leise gemischten Gitarren ganz ausgezeichnet, wie es scheint.

Zu schätzen weiß das auch Sänger Tyler, der sympathisch und bodenständig durch das Set führt und sich auch nicht zu schade ist, zwischenzeitlich das Szepter abzugeben. Gitarrist Damon übernimmt etwa in „Sinner“ große Teile des Leadgesangs und ist auch sonst sowohl stimmlich als auch körperlich durchwegs präsent. Ohnehin scheint die Bindung zwischen OF VIRTUE und ihren Fans eng zu sein: Die spontane Herz-Geste des Musikers im offenbarenden „Sober“ erwidern zahlreiche Anhänger:innen im Handumdrehen.

OF VIRTUE verlassen sich zu sehr auf Backing Tracks, legen sich ansonsten aber ins Zeug

Geschmälert wird die Freude hingegen durch den überbordenden Einsatz von Backing Tracks: Neben einigen Beats und Synthesizern kommt auch der komplette Bass vom Band, wodurch gerade in den ruhigen, von ‘RnB’ beeinflussten Strophen mancher Stücke der Gesang als einziges Element live dargeboten wird. Das geht sicher besser, zumal sich OF VIRTUE ansonsten sichtbar ins Zeug legen. Während Gitarrist Michael zwischenzeitlich das Smartphone eines Fans stibitzt, um ein paar unvergessliche Videoaufnahmen zu tätigen, geht Shouter Tyler sogar noch einen Schritt weiter, indem er für das abschließende „Cannibals“ den Moshpit höchstpersönlich antestet.

ANY GIVEN DAY

Wenn das Vorprogramm eines gezeigt hat, dann ist es die Partylaune der Münchner:innen, die heute offenbar zu allem bereit sind. Dass man um kurz vor halb Zehn in der Backstage Halle das Tour-Motto „Limitless“ hingegen wortwörtlich versteht, verschlägt uns doch kurzzeitig die Sprache. Dabei hätten wir es kommen sehen können: Mit der Lead-Single „Get That Done“ und dem Live-Kracher „Never Surrender“ liefern ANY GIVEN DAY schon zum Auftakt die Steilvorlage für einen fast schon legendären Abriss.

Der Moshpit wächst im Sekundentakt, während das Quintett auf der Bühne sein Bestmögliches tut, um die elektrisierende Stimmung in der kuscheligen Halle in entsprechende Bahnen zu lenken. Große Aufforderungen sind derweil gar nicht nötig. Wie selbstverständlich klatschen die Zuschauer:innen in den ruhigeren Breaks mit, bevor sich zahlreiche Beinpaare im Takt vom Boden lösen. Gar das komplette Programm im Schnelldurchlauf spult die bayerische Landeshauptstadt im früh gezückten „Endurance“ ab, wo zwischen Circle Pit und springenden Fans auch die ersten Crowdsurfer nach vorne segeln. „Ihr seid doch irre!“, quittiert Sänger Dennis Diehl, um im Anschluss die ersten anzüglichen Forderungen zunächst abzuwiegeln.

Sich seiner Kleidung entledigen will der muskelbepackte Frontmann so früh noch nicht, man müsse doch die Spannung aufrechterhalten. Statt Running Gags will der gut aufgelegte Hühne lieber noch mehr Crowdsurfer sehen, die im folgenden „Levels“ bald die komplette Bühne säumen und Bassist Michael Golinski in der zweiten Reihe nur verdutzt grinsen lassen. Klar, es ist ein fast schon absurdes Bild, bei dem in Abwesenheit eines Fotograbens nicht nur die Roadies alle Hände voll zu tun haben: Auch Diehl selbst greift den ankommenden Fans bereitwillig unter die Arme, bevor es von den Brettern wieder zurück in die Menge geht.

Dass sich der Shouter im Anschluss fast selbst wieder um die gesammelten Sympathiepunkte bringt, indem er den Bayern ausgerechnet eine “Becks”-Flasche zum Prosit entgegenhebt, können wir nur als versehentlichen Fauxpas verbuchen. Übel nimmt ihm das glücklicherweise niemand so richtig, wie sich kurz darauf zeigt: Nicht nur teilt sich die Menge vor „Unrbeakable“ artig für die kommende Wall of Death, auch ein paar Liegestütze absolviert man dort gern als Aufwärmprogramm. Irgendetwas scheinen die Anhänger:innen dabei richtig gemacht zu haben, denn dem folgenden Tumult kann sich nicht einmal Dennis Diehl entziehen. Als sich die Menschentraube in Erwartung des Breakdowns abermals öffnet, finden wir statt der üblichen angetrunkenen Spaßvögel plötzlich den Frontmann persönlich im Zentrum, an dessen Brust kurz darauf die Leiber abprallen, als wäre nichts gewesen.

ANY GIVEN DAY reihen Hit an Hit, verzichten aber auf Überraschungen

Zugegeben, dieses Spektakel adäquat in Worte zu fassen, ist nahezu unmöglich. Fast scheint es so, als spiele man sich heute gegenseitig in Ekstase. Auf Aktion folgt Reaktion: Das zur Halbzeit entledigte Shirt Dennis Diehls wird mit einem segelnden Büstenhalter entlohnt; die melancholische Atmosphäre der Powerballade „Lonewolf“ durch zahlreiche Lichter im Publikum begleitet. Suchten wir das Haar in der Suppe, fänden wir es wohl nur bei der Songauswahl. Obwohl ANY GIVEN DAY auf dieser Tour einen Hit an den anderen reihen, stehen Überraschungen nicht auf dem Programm. Abseits der aktuellen Stücke konzentriert sich die Metalcore-Band auf exakt das Material, das schon in den vergangenen fünf Jahren das Rückgrat der Live-Shows bildete.

Dazu zählt auch die akustische Interpretation des Klassikers „Home Is Where The Heart Is“, das Dennis Ter Schmitten mit der Akustikgitarre begleitet, bevor die Gruppe zumindest mit einem Kostümwechsel kurzzeitig für frischen Wind sorgt. Für den Western-Track „Come Whatever May“ kleiden sich die Musiker in Cowboy-Hüte und Mäntel, was selbstverständlich so kitschig ist, wie es sich anhört. Die gesunde Portion Selbstironie ist zugleich allerdings ähnlich erfrischend wie die bereitwillig verteilten Wasser-Reserven nach dem folgenden „Apocalypse“.

Mit ein wenig Fanservice beschließen ANY GIVEN DAY die “Limitless”-Tour

In Routine verfallen wollen ANY GIVEN DAY mit fortschreitender Spieldauer derweil nicht. Selbst zum Ende hin gibt die Band Vollgas, indem sie etwa für „H.A.T.E.“ DOOMCRUSHER-Frontmann Marv als Unterstützung hinzuzieht. Allein den Klargesang Christopher Wieczoreks (ANNISOKAY) vom Band abzuspielen, halten wir für mindestens fragwürdig, zählt man doch mit Bassist Michael Golinski und vor allem dem unermüdlichen Dennis Ter Schmitten zwei ganz formidable Background-Sänger in den eigenen Reihen.

Aufhalten wollen wir uns damit allerdings nicht weiter, immerhin bitten ANY GIVEN DAY für den Hit „Savior“ erst alle weiblichen Besucher:innen zu sich auf die Bretter, bevor auf der Zielgeraden mit „Arise“ und dem RIHANNA-Cover „Diamonds“ zwei weitere Fan-Lieblinge den Sack zu machen. Dass Letzteres ins Set zurückgekehrt ist, hat einen ganz einfachen Grund, wie uns Sänger Dennis Diehl mitgibt, bevor er sich auf den Händen der Fans ein letztes Mal durch die Halle tragen lässt. Der virale Hit aus den Anfangstagen sei unser Song, den man dementsprechend lautstark mitsingen solle.

ANY GIVEN DAY eilen von einem Superlativ zum nächsten

Ein klein wenig Fanservice zum Abschluss, der für die Münchner:innen aber die sprichwörtliche Kirsche auf der Sahnetorte zu sein scheint. Immerhin eilten ANY GIVEN DAY gute anderthalb Stunden von einem Superlativ zum nächsten, während das kondensierte Wasser im stickigen Club bereits von der Decke tropfte. Es sind Bilder und Momentaufnahmen des Abends, die wir in diesen letzten Minuten ganz bewusst abspeichern, denn wenn wir nach den Live-Qualitäten der Gelsenkirchener gehen, dürften die kleineren Locations nach den „Limitless“-Konzerten endgültig der Vergangenheit angehören – allein schon, um dem Tour-Motto auch in dieser Hinsicht Rechnung zu tragen.

AYREON kündigt die Veröffentlichung von „01011001 – Live Beneath the Waves“ an
AYREON präsentiert auf dem Live-Event das Konzeptalbum “01011001” aus dem Jahr 2008, gefolgt von einer Reihe von Zugaben. Gäste waren diesmal u.a. Simone Simons (EPICA), Anneke van Giersbergen, Damian Wilson (THRESHOLD), Jonas Renkse (KATATONIA), Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN) und Tom Englund (EVERGREY).

Arjen Lucassen über die Show: “Als ich das Album 01011001 im Jahr 2007 schrieb, war es nie dafür gedacht, live gespielt zu werden. Ich konnte es also so kompliziert machen, wie ich wollte, mit unzähligen Instrumentalisten und nicht weniger als 17 Sängern! Als wir in Erwägung zogen, das Album live zu spielen, dachte ich wirklich nicht, dass wir es schaffen würden, die richtigen Musiker zu finden, um dieses Album zum Leben zu erwecken. Aber… es scheint, dass wir es geschafft haben, denn das Publikum schien sich wirklich zu amüsieren! Ich bin so stolz auf alle Beteiligten. “Mehr ist mehr” war das Credo dieser Shows. Ich denke, wir haben unser Wort gehalten!”

The mess we’re in feels like deep love
In the grand tragicomedy of human affection, one might ponder—why must love, that most capricious of emotions, be as perplexing as a Rubik’s Cube rearranged in the dark? The conundrum of nurturing bonds with those to whom our hearts are most tethered, a task both maddening and magnificently fulfilling, is the very meat and mead of Ex-Hyena’s latest offering. Spiral Down. Their sophomore single from A Kiss of the Mind, the band’s first release through Re:Mission Entertainment, dances on the knife-edge of ecstasy and agony. This throbbing leviathan of a track, now further transmogrified by MORIS BLAK’s industrially-tinged, delightfully anarchic remix, invites us to a ball where the music is as richly layered as the human heart itself.

In Spiral Down, Reuben Bettsak and Bo Barringer of Ex-Hyena craft a dystopian banger, plunging listeners into the vortex of our tumultuous present—a blend of reality and the collective anxiety about what the future holds. This track is a deep dive into a kaleidoscopic web of introspection, weaving through doubt, confusion, yearning, and solitude, yet also finding moments of illumination, contrast, and allure. Under Barringer’s production and mixing, with Adam Stillson’s mastering touch at Decade Music Studio, Spiral Down emerges as a powerful opener in the band’s current live repertoire. The track showcases Ex-Hyena’s dynamic range through swirling keyboard layers, deep, resonant bass, and driving, hypnotic rhythms, fully embodying their dark energy.

“Spiral Down is a journey, it feels more expansive,” says Barringer. “At the beginning of the track, it starts out in a much brighter and bouncier place than anything we’ve recorded, but as it continues it goes deeper and deeper into the menace.”

“One of the main reasons we make music and art is that it’s therapeutic and healing,” adds Bettsak. “Through a song or story, we can attempt to process very complex things in our lives…The lyrics-’In molten love I found your kisses, where shadows form and for the season. It feels like pain, it feels like pleasure,’ explore the ying/yang at the root of love….I think love is beautiful and ghastly at the same time. I think it’s ultimately worth it, but can sometimes feel like a deep pit of chaos and confusion. And it’s not just love with people close to us, but also in regards to love of ourselves.”

The MORIS BLAK remix elevates the track to new heights with its intense, high-energy beats that not only allow the melodies to stand out but also showcase the distinctive flair of the MORIS BLAK universe. Accompanying this is a music video directed by Bettsak, featuring dancer Ava Grebe. Through her expressive and dramatic dance movements, Grebe embodies the dual themes of pleasure and pain that are central to the song. Set against the visual projections by JST-N, her performance—spinning, twirling, and shaking—captures the intricate dance of love’s contrasting emotions, bringing the music’s underlying narrative to life.

Since its inception in 2020, surfacing through the haze of a global pandemic and illuminated by the city’s darkest corners, Ex-Hyena has delivered a steady and prolific beat across underground dance floors, with two albums (2021’s Artificial Pulse and 2022’s Moon Reflections), a remix album (2023’s Moon Reflections Remixed), a handful of singles and EPs, and collaborations with Control I’m Here, Hororhaus, BlakLight, Pleasure Policy, Jackson VanHorn, Denial Waits, Blood Handsome, The Mystic Underground, Maduro, and others.

From here, the beat rolls on, and Ex-Hyena’s future-noir styling would not be complete without a look ahead. A Kiss of the Mind is slated for early 2024 release, and will see the band playing many shows in support of the album.

THE VISION BLEAK stellen mit “Chapter II: In Rue d’Auseil” einen weiteren Song ihrer neuen Platte Weired Tales” vor. “Weird Tales” besteht aus einem Song, der in verschiedene Kapitel aufgeteilt ist, und erscheint am 12. April 2024.

Multi-Instrumentalist, Komponist und Produzent Schwadorf beschreibt den Track so:

“Dieses Stück ist ein Paradebeispiel für ein klassisches Gruselmärchen und musikalisch hunderprozentig THE VISION BLEAK. Es war eines der ersten, die für ‘Weird Tales’ geschrieben wurden, und ist gleichzeitig eingängig, dunkel und tanzbar. Dieser Teil ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes “Gothic” – mit einem leichten 80er-Jahre-Vibe durch analoge Synthesizer. Der Text basiert auf H. P. Lovecrafts Kurzgeschichte “Die Musik des Erich Zann”, in der der Geiger Erich Zann sein Instrument in einer schrecklichen und grauenvollen Dissonanzorgie kreischen und schreien lässt, was gespenstische, unheimliche Melodien erzeugt.”

Dieses Album ist ein dunkles und erhabenes One-Track-Opus, das wir schon lange realisieren wollten. ‘Once I Was a Flower’ und ‘The Premature Burial’  handeln von Tod und Gräbern, könnten gleichzeitig aber kaum unterschiedlicher sein. ‘Once I Was a Flower’, das auf einer Kurzgeschichte von Lafcadio Hearn basiert, ist ein gotisches Stück voll Traurigkeit und Schönheit. Es erzählt die Geschichte einer Blume und ihres Duftes – ihres Geistes -, die das Grab mit einer jungen Frau teilt. The Premature Burial” erinnert an das Grauen, lebendig begraben zu werden. Drr Song beruht auf Edgar Allen Poes Geschichtssammlung über Menschen, die dieses grausame Schicksal erlitten. ‘Once I Was a Flower” hat einen ganz besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen. Es war nicht nur die erste musikalische Idee für ‘Weird Tales’, die das Konzept prägte, sondern es ist auch einfach die schaurigste und wunderbarste poetische Kurzgeschichte, die ich je gelesen habe. Synth-pop, post-punk, and new wave pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are poised to captivate North American audiences with their much-anticipated fall tour, starting in September 2024. The announcement follows their standout performance at the Darker Waves Festival in Huntington Beach last November, setting the stage for a series of shows that will highlight their legendary live performance prowess. This tour marks a pivotal moment for OMD, offering a stage to showcase their latest work alongside their timeless classics.

OMD’s musical journey, rooted in the post-punk era and quickly evolving to embrace new-wave, has set them apart as innovators. Their 1979 debut single “Electricity,” released on the iconic Factory Records and produced by the legendary Martin Hannett, was a bold introduction to their unique sound. Inspired by Kraftwerk’s “Radioactivity,” “Electricity” was a nod to their electronic music predecessors, setting the foundation for OMD’s pioneering role in the electronic music scene.

The band’s recent European tour, which included their largest-ever headline show at London’s O2 Arena, signals a creative resurgence. Their latest album, “Bauhaus Staircase,” released via White Noise, has been celebrated as a high point in their career, blending their signature sound with incisive political commentary. Andy McCluskey, the band’s co-founder, expressed his contentment with the album, potentially positioning it as the band’s final statement. “I’m comfortable if this is OMD’s last statement,” McCluskey said, emphasizing the album’s significance.

The North American tour will feature a mix of new tracks and fan favorites, with McCluskey revealing the band’s excitement about integrating “Bauhaus Staircase” into their live set. “We are so excited to be able to tour again with a brand new album to showcase,” McCluskey says. “It’s been six years since we learned new songs for live performances. The songs from ‘Bauhaus Staircase’ will fit beautifully into our setlist – we just have to choose which five to play, as we have to treat people to the hits as well!”

Walt Disco, set to support OMD throughout the North American leg, adds to the tour’s anticipation. The involvement of such a dynamic supporting act promises a varied and engaging concert experience for attendees.

Mit einem Video zu “Unhallowed & Forgotten” stellen VULTURE den ersten Song ihres kommenden Albums “Sentinels” vor. Das vierte Album der Thrash Metal/Speed Metal-Band aus Nordrhein-Westfalen erscheint am 12. April 2024 via Metal Blade Records.

Live präsentieren VULTURE “Sentinels” Mitte April bei Record Release Shows in Essen, Hamburg und Halle.

Gitarrist Stefan Castevet ordnet das neue Album so ein:

“Im Vergleich zum letzten Album Dealin’ Death haben wir das Tempo wieder deutlich angezogen. Wir sind wieder mutiger und ein bisschen wilder. Es war uns wichtig, eingängig zu sein und Refrains einzubauen, die hängen bleiben. Natürlich haben wir unseren Stil grundsätzlich beibehalten, aber wir haben den Rahmen der Songs klarer definiert. Das fing schon beim Songwriting an, für das wir uns mehr Zeit gelassen haben als sonst. Wir haben drei Demos aufgenommen, die wir ziemlich gut produziert haben. Wir konnten deshalb die Songs in so gut wie fertiggestellten Versionen auf uns wirken zu lassen, um dann die besten Stücke auszuwählen und – zumindest teilweise – noch einmal zu überarbeiten.”

Für “Sentinels” arbeiteten VULTURE mit Marco Brinkmann im Hellforge Studio  – und zwar ziemlich diszipliniert, wie Castevet berichtet:

“”Sentinels” die  VULTURE-Platte mit den bislang besten Sound, aus diesem Grund: Wir hatten klar strukturierte  normale Arbeitstage mit festen Zielen und uns ganz auf die Aufnahme der Songs konzentriert. Früher waren unsere Aufnahmen weniger gut organisiert, das führte am Ende zu Überstunden für alle Beteiligten.”

Die Power Metal-Band ALTERIUM hat mit dem Lyric-Video zu “Crystalline” einen weiteren Song ihres kommenden Albums “Of War And Flames” veröffentlicht.

Zuvor hat die Band nach “Siren’s Call” und dem Titeltrack auch das Stück “Crossroads Inn” als Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Inspiriert wurde der Song vom gleichnamigen Videospiel.

Im Oktober 2023 veröffentlichte die Gruppe mit “Bismarck” ein SABATON-Cover mitsamt Video-Clip. Zuvor ist mit “Drag Me To Hell” eine erste Vorab-Single der Italiener erschienen. Der Song, der wie das gesamte Album von Lars Rettkowitz (FREEDOM CALL) produziert wurde, behandelt Themen aus der “World of Warcraft”.

“Eine meiner größten Leidenschaften”, offenbart Sängerin Nicoletta Rosellini. “In diesem Track erzählen wir einen Teil der Geschichte des heldenhaften Paladins Bolvar Fordragon, der, nachdem er die Flammen des Drachen überlebt hat, das ultimative Opfer bringt und sich auf den Gefrorenen Thron setzt, um Herrscher der Geißel zu werden.”

“Of War And Flames” ist das erste Album der Band und wird am 8. März 2024 via AFM Records erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Emanuela Nicosia.

Die Walpurgisnacht VOL. III in Berlin findet am 26. und 27. April 2024 im ORWOHaus statt.

Die Melodic Death Metal-Band VERITERAS hat mit “The Dark Horizon” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Shadow of Death” (2022) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Seattle und wird am 11. April 2024 erscheinen. Gemixt und gemastert wurde das Album von Dan Swanö im Unisound Studio, nachdem es gemeinsam mit Don Gunn in The Office Studio aufgenommen worden ist.

VERITERAS sind Gitarrist Santtu Winter, Gitarrist und Sänger Sean Osterberg, Drummer Jason Gooselaw sowie Bassist Major Bruno.

Pink Stiletto is set to reinvigorate New Wave and post-punk with their debut track, “Synthesize.” Echoing the eclectic, avant-garde essence of ZE Records, Pink Stiletto merges disco’s allure with punk’s rawness, funk’s rhythm, and new wave’s idiosyncrasy. “Synthesize” stands out with its unconventional sound, capturing the vibrant, artistic spirit of downtown New York. It draws inspiration from the likes of Gina X, Tubeway Army, and Cristina.

Valery Kvochkova, the visionary behind Pink Stiletto, shares, “The project’s name was inspired by iconic tracks like Fancy’s ‘Slice Me Nice’ and Link Wray’s ‘Switchblade’, embodying the 80s New Wave and Post Punk’s eclectic mix of wacky, cheesy, and sexy elements. It’s a solo endeavor I embarked on last year, aiming to revive the distinctive spirit of that era.”

The track’s lyrics, though succinct and bilingual in French and English, are set against an infectious groove that promises to energize any dance floor, especially when paired with dazzling laser effects.

Originally, Synthesize was conceived with Kvochkova’s previous band, Deux Nomiz, featuring talents like Billy Trujillo (Part Time) on lead synth, Chris Wilson (Part Time, Poppy Jean Crawford) on drums, and Charlie Goon on guitar, with Kvochkova herself handling bass synths and vocals. “The dissolution of Deux Nomiz left this track unreleased. It held a special place in my heart, compelling me to give it a new life as Pink Stiletto’s debut, preserving the original essence while infusing it with fresh elements,” explains Kvochkova.

While Pink Stiletto is predominantly Kvochkova’s solo project, it has warmly embraced collaborations. In “Synthesize,” Protocultura’s Eric Acosta and Jimmy Bronson enrich the track with analogue effects, drum overdubs, and mixing, complemented by Kyle Borodkin of Raptor Records on the saxophone. “I personally played and recorded the new version, making sure to maintain the original’s aesthetics while introducing new elements, with significant contributions from Protocultura and Kyle on the saxophone,” Kvochkova adds.

With an impressive debut performance alongside renowned artists like David Microwave Javelosa of Los Microwaves, members from The Units and Tuxedomoon, and Miguel Gomez of Kontrol, Pink Stiletto, under Kvochkova’s leadership, promises an electrifying future. “Sharing the stage with my synth hero, David Microwave Javelosa, and other iconic musicians was a remarkable experience. For live shows, I bring together a band of talented friends to fully realize Pink Stiletto’s music,” Kvochkova remarks, highlighting the collaborative essence of their live shows.

The next performance is eagerly anticipated on March 1st at Thee Stork Club, where they will join forces with Diesel Dudes’ synth-punk dynamism and Candy Whips’ New Wave/Italo energy.

Die Death Metal-Band INNER SANCTUM hat ihr viertes Studioalbum “The Great Odd Ones” für 22. März 2024 angekündigt. Bei der Platte handelt es sich um ein Konzeptalbum, das sich mit dem Reich der titelgebenden Meeresgötter befasst.

Nun haben INNER SANCTUM mit einem Lyrics-Video zu “Era Of The Idols” einen weiteren Song des Albums veröffentlicht.

Eine erste Hörprobe verööffentlichte die Band im Januar mit der Single “Abgott Death Kult” bei YouTube. Zum Song selbst erklärt die Gruppe:

“Nach acht langen Jahren könnten wir nicht glücklicher sein, endlich unser neuestes Werk zu präsentieren, besonders weil ‘Abgott Death Kult’ ein so persönlicher und besonderer Song für uns ist. Nicht nur, dass er die Grenzen des INNER SANCTUM-Sounds bis zum Äußersten ausreizt, sondern er ist auch ein Paradebeispiel dafür, wie unsere persönlichen und privaten Erfahrungen kreativ interpretiert werden können, um in die Erzählung zu passen, die wir für ‘The Great Odd Ones’ geschaffen haben. Die Ursprünge des Songs waren eher experimenteller Natur, so dass es selbst für uns eine Überraschung war, wie er zum Aushängeschild unseres neuen musikalischen Weges wurde. Die subtile Integration von realen Begebenheiten in ein etwas obskures lyrisches Thema hat sicherlich ihren Teil dazu beigetragen. Wir hoffen, dass ihr den Song genauso genießen werdet wie wir.”

Die Black Metal-Band CORPUS DIAVOLIS hat mit “Chalice of Fornication” einen Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Elixiria Ekstasis” veröffentlicht. Es ist das fünfte Album der Franzosen aus Marseille.

“Elixiria Ekstasis” wurde von George Emanuel im Pentagram Studio in Athen gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Cristóbal “Kerbcrawlerghost” López (u.a. für WEREGOAT tätig) ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 15. März 2024 via Les Acteurs de L’Ombre Productions.

Als zweite Single ihres neuen Albums “Deprecipice” haben MASTIFF einen Visualizer-Clip zu “Void” veröffentlicht. Der Track folgt auf das Video zu “Serrated“. Für diesen Song holte sich die Band Unterstützung von Harry Nott, Sänger der Band BURNER. Dan James, Gitarrist bei XIII, steuerte ein Solo bei.

“Deprecipice” erscheint am 22. März 2024 via MNRK Heavy / SPV. Produziert wurde es von Joe Clayton im No Studio in Manchester.

Jim Hodge, Sänger der Band, verspricht eine kleine Neuausrichtung:

“Wir haben uns stark in Richtung Hardcore entwickelt. Unser letztes Album klang mehr nach Death Metal, dieses ist stakkatoartiger, mit definierten Riffs.  Das Album heißt ‘Deprecipice’, das fasst ziemlich genau zusammen, wo ich und unser Gitarrist James waren, als wir es geschrieben haben:  Wir standen beide am Rande einer Depression.”

Die Acoustic Pirate Metal-Band THE DREAD CREW OF ODDWOOD hat mit “Rust & Glory” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das fünfte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Kalifornien und wird am 15. März 2024 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach dem Track “Lawful Evil” mit “Leather Ship” nun auch einen Video-Clip vom Album.

“Rust & Glory” wurde von Anna Murphy (CELLAR DARLING, Ex-ELUVEITIE) produziert und gemixt und von Svante Forsbäck (u.a. für RAMMSTEIN tätig) gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Mark Gibbons.

Die Post-Metal-Band O ZORN! hat mit “Slow Mood” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Vermillion Haze” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Your Killer” (2020) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Long Beach und wird 15. März 2024 via Hard Drugs / Seeing Red Records erscheinen. Produziert wurde das Album von Ryan Boesch (u.a. für ANDREW WK tätig).

Mit “Never Saw It Coming” gibt es seit Januar bereits einen animierten Video-Clip. Dieser handelt vom Verlust eines langjährigen Freundes, der nicht in der Lage war, die Schuldgefühle und die Trauer über den Verlust zweier Familienmitglieder durch COVID-19 innerhalb weniger Tage zu überwinden.

“Ein Arbeitskollege, den ich als engen Freund betrachtete, nahm sich während der Pandemie das Leben”, erklärt Sänger Bill Kielty. “Außerhalb der Arbeit lebten wir in verschiedenen Welten und wussten nur das über ihn, was er am Arbeitsplatz erzählte. Das ist im Leben ganz normal. Wir alle haben Beziehungen außerhalb unseres unmittelbaren Umfelds, aber wenn man über Jahre hinweg acht bis zehn Stunden am Tag mit jemandem verbringt, sollte man meinen, dass man ein gutes Gefühl dafür hat, wer diese Person im Leben ist. Als ich den schrecklichen Anruf erhielt, in dem mir sein Tod mitgeteilt wurde, war ich außer mir vor Trauer. Ich fühlte mich buchstäblich, als hätte ich einen Bruder verloren. In den darauffolgenden Tagen, in denen ich nach weiteren Informationen darüber suchte, was passiert war und warum, erfuhr ich von vielen seiner engsten Freunde und Familienmitglieder, dass er als Kind an einer schweren Geisteskrankheit gelitten hatte, die sich auch als Erwachsener immer wieder bemerkbar machte. Das konnte ich einigermaßen nachvollziehen, denn von Zeit zu Zeit wurde ich Zeuge eines merkwürdigen Verhaltens, aber er war ein bisschen wie ein Gelehrter, so dass ich es einfach als ein bisschen seltsam abtat. Der eigentliche Schlag kam, als ich erfuhr, dass er in den Monaten vor seinem Tod Meth geraucht hatte und psychotische Anfälle hatte. Er wurde paranoid, hörte Stimmen, sah Dinge und hatte Zusammenstöße mit dem Gesetz. Ich hatte keine Ahnung, wie ernst seine Situation war, aber alle anderen schienen es zu wissen.”

“‘Good Morning’ ist für ten56. ein Statement, unsere Art, die Welt wissen zu lassen, dass wir noch nicht fertig sind mit Experimenten, dass wir noch nicht damit fertig sind, Grenzen zu verschieben oder musikalische Genres zu verbiegen; wir sind jedoch hier, um unsere Flagge als einer der aggressivsten, schlagkräftigsten und emotionalsten Acts der letzten Jahre zu hissen. Dieser Track ist ein Dankeschön an all diejenigen, die unseren Sound und unseren Stil schätzen und die darauf warten, zu sehen, wie weit wir bereit sind, die emotionale Achterbahn zu fahren. What do we do with the things we capture,
But then refuse to let go?
Ye Gods, the alias of prolific producer and composer Antoni Maiovvi, is a study in the subtle complexities of dark sound design alongside conceptual themes of the occult. With his new album on L.I.E.S. Records titled No Albion, the artist embraces aspects of visceral horror—a soundtrack to the deep, vast abyss—by way of minimalism and slow modulations.

No Albion focuses on the pursuit of serpentine modulations and tenuous phrasings—and the single, “Total Eclipse,” is just that. Much in the vein of industrialist greats, Coil, the track paces itself as it swells and undulates. The slow-building tension boils to the brim before it dissipates and concludes with a mysterious spoken word statement. The listener is left to wonder what spirits have been roused from their sleep.

And just like the track itself, the music video mirrors the steadiness of “Total Eclipse” as it depicts Maiovvi walking down an empty corridor towards an unseen something—or someone. Masked and stoic, the artist in his priest-like robe recalls a ceremonial ritual that’s about to unfold.

Schlimm, wenn man an Tagen, an denen Konzerte gespielt werden, arbeiten muss. So ist es auch, als ich am 16.02. auf Arbeit nur an den kommenden Abend denken kann. Seit Tagen läuft das neue Album “Suffocating in the Current of Time” von PRAISE THE PLAGUE bei mir rauf und runter. Eine Dauerschleife urgewaltiger Dunkelheit. Konzentration auf den Job Fehlanzeige – ich bin voller Vorfreude. Also früh Feierabend machen, nach Hause gurken, ‘ne Stulle ins Gesicht drücken und ab in die Stadt! 

Das Album soll am besagten Freitag der Allgemeinheit präsentiert werden und die fünfköpfige Kapelle lässt es sich natürlich nicht nehmen, der neuen Platte eine Releaseshow zu widmen. Als Berliner Band ist es nicht so schwierig, in der Heimatstadt einen Club mit entsprechender Atmosphäre klarzumachen. So fiel die Wahl, überaus passend, auf das “Urban Spree”, nahe dem Eingang zum alten RAW-Friedrichshain (Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk), einem Kultur-, Sport- und Veranstaltungsgelände, wie es passender nicht sein kann, denn Kultur und Szene sind hier noch lebendig. Wir lieben es, finden doch gefühlt 50 % unserer Konzerte hier, in einem der Clubs des RAW (z.B. Astra, Cassiopeia oder eben auch Urban Spree) statt. 

Das Konzert ist restlos ausverkauft, was bei einer so guten Band wie PRAISE THE PLAGUE und dem Kontingent von nur ca. 250 Tickets nicht verwunderlich ist

Als wir ankommen, fühlen wir uns sofort wie zu Hause. Wir bezeichnen Musik, wie sie an diesem Abend gespielt wird, gerne als Hipster-Black-Metal. Das ist nicht abwertend gemeint, sondern beruht einfach darauf, dass sie weniger elitär als klassischer kalter Oldschool-BM ist. Hier steht die Kutte voller unleserlicher Patches neben dem senffarbenen Beanie. Die Hornbrille sitzt über dem perfekt gestylten Moustache… und über allem prangt die Botschaft, für die wir alle einstehen: Toleranz und Farbvielfalt. Es ist so schön! 

URSÜNDE

Der Abend wird von URSÜNDE eröffnet. Das Trio aus Berlin sticht heute ein wenig heraus, da sie trockenen Black Metal spielen, mit Corpsepaint, Lederkluft und dem ganzen Drumherum. Handwerklich sehr gut, allein das Intro, welches mit nervös eingespielten Streichinstrumenten und später einsetzender Orgel eine schön bedrückende Atmosphäre aufbaut, passt sehr gut zum schummrigen roten Licht und der Enge des Clubs. Für uns bietet die Musik allerdings ein bisschen zu wenig Abwechslung. Aber das ist nur unser persönlicher Eindruck und soll nicht wertend (miss-)verstanden werden. Da URSÜNDE bislang erst eine Demo namens “Cathartic Black Terror” veröffentlicht haben, ist nach drei Tracks bereits Schicht im Schacht. Ein kurzweiliger Auftritt, vor der Bühne ist man jetzt aber aufgewärmt.

KRATT

Als Nächstes betreten, nach kurzer Pause, KRATT das Podium. Es gibt sofort voll auf die Zwölf! Immer mitten rein ins Gesicht ballern schnelle Blastbeats und scharf gespielte Gitarren. Post-Black Metal der härteren Sorte. Aber auch getragene Parts gibt’s. Ein toller Mix, alles stimmungsvoll und brachial untermalt von den schneidend kalten Screams von Vocalist R.H.. Der Auftritt ist ungemein energiegeladen, es kommt definitiv keine Langeweile auf. 

Uff, im Club wird’s langsam echt warm. Das Set muss nun umgebaut werden, denn bis jetzt haben sich URSÜNDE und KRATT ein Schlagzeug geteilt, da bei beiden Bands M.S. (Schütte) an den Drums sitzt. Eine etwas längere Pause erwartet uns also. Genug Zeit für’n Bierchen (die Auswahl ist für so einen kleinen Club echt umfangreich!) und ‘ne Pinkelpause.

A SECRET REVEALED

Kurz danach stehen A SECRET REVEALED auf der Bühne. Sofort mit dem ersten Track “Empty Throne” wird klar, dass wie hier eine von diesen unbekannten Perlen zu Gesicht bekommen. Echt überzeugend brüllt sich Sänger Michael Heim die Seele aus dem Leib. Auch die Gitarristen Lukas und Ralf verstehen ihr Handwerk. Beim Aufbau haben wir die Pedalboards der beiden bestaunt, jetzt wird klar, warum diese so umfangreich aufgebaut sind. Raffinesse in Handwerk und Klangvielfalt. Teilweise unglaublich schön anmutende Melodien, die sich dann, auf dem Höhepunkt in plötzlich harten Gitarrenwänden ergießen. Stroboskoplicht wechselt mit kalter blauer Ausleuchtung. Man fühlt sich an Größen wie u.a. DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT oder HERETOIR erinnert. Konzerte sind auch dafür da, neue Künstler zu entdecken. Supportauftritte sind hierfür häufig eine großartige Gelegenheit – so auch heute! Wir werden das Schaffen der fünfköpfigen Band aus Würzburg, die bis dato komplett an uns vorbeigegangen ist, gerne weiterverfolgen.

PRAISE THE PLAGUE verströmen vom ersten Ton an Verderben, Verfall, den Schrecken der Unterwelt.

Rasend schnelles Gedonner, purer, sich energetisch entladender Bombast, die doomigen Passagen tragen mit den metallisch rasselnd tief gestimmten Gitarren: Das muss man einfach erlebt haben, um die Faszination für diese Musik nachvollziehen zu können. Ich erkenne bei diesem Sound entfernt klangliche Parallelen zu bspw. THE GREAT OLD ONES. Die Bühnenshow an sich hingegen überzeugt mit absolutem Minimalismus. Weißes grelles Licht auf Knöchelhöhe der Musiker, welches den Boden Richtung Publikum flutet. Dazu wahre Unmengen von Kunstnebel. Man sieht die Hand vor Augen kaum, vor allem in den ersten Reihen ist man nahezu blind und wird vom Grauen des Ungesehenen förmlich erdrückt. Ein filmreifes Endzeit-Szenario, welches die Umrisse von Robert Carmosin (Gesang), Marcel Martin und Christoph Macht (Gitarren), Benjamin Linz (Bass) und Sascha Bühl (Drums) im Dunst verschwimmen lässt. So als hätte sich eine Pforte in eine andere, fremde, endlos schwarze (Unter-)Welt aufgetan. Was für das Auge überaus überzeugend anmutet, ist für die Kameralinse hingegen ein schier unlösbares Problem. Man kann halt nicht alle glücklich machen. Manch eine Atmosphäre lässt sich einfach kaum bildgebend einfangen.  

Für uns endet mit diesem Act ein sehr spannender und einprägsamer Abend. Ich decke mich noch rasch mit Merch ein, dann geht’s heim. Muss erstmal Luft holen. Alter, das war mal volle Möhre endgeil! Hat gebockt, gerne mehr davon!

Die Göteborger Doom-Helden von DUN RINGILL können durchatmen. Der Release für ihr starkes neues Album „Where The Old Gods Play – Act 1“ war für August 2023 geplant und sollte auf der Tour mit PENTAGRAM gefeiert werden. Gut Doom will Weile haben, nun endlich wird das Album veröffentlicht.

Passend zum Release von „Where The Old Gods Play – Act 1“ haben DUN RINGILL nun das Video zum Song „The Parrish“ veröffentlicht. Produziert wurde das Video von Basser Patrik Andersson Winberg. Lucia, die Hauptfigur im zweiteiligen Konzeptalbum, trifft hier auf ihrem religiösen Weg erstmals auf ihre Gemeinde und fühlt sich dort zuhause.

Die Story um Lucia wird in „Where The Old Gods Play – Act 2“ entsprechend weitergeführt. Dessen Release war für jetzt geplant. Nachdem nun erst der erste Teil veröffentlicht wird, wird der Release von „Act 2“ auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben.

Die Death Metal-Band WITCH VOMIT hat mit “Funeral Sanctum” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “A Scream from the Tomb Below” (2016) und “Buried Deep in a Bottomless Grave” (2019) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Portland.

“Funeral Sanctum”, das von Evan Mersky in den Red Lantern Studios aufgenommen und gemixt wurde, wird am 5. April 2024 via 20 Buck Spin erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt aus der Feder von Matt Stikker. Vorab gibt es den Track “Blood of Abomination” zu hören.

WITCH VOMIT sind Sänger und Gitarrist Tony “Tempter” Thomas (TORTURE RACK), Drummer Vincent “Filth” Van Dell (APRAXIC), Bassist Jason G. (TORTURE RACK) sowie Gitarristin Casey Lynch (Ex-MURDERESS).
