Die Alternative Metal-Band ALT. hatte Ende 2022 einen Plattenvertrag mit SharpTone Records abgeschlossen. Gemeinsam veröffentlichte man am 16. Juni 2023 das Album “Abeyance”, das insgesamt zehn Tracks enthält. Zur Single “Back To Earth” teilte man jetzt ein Live-Video bei YouTube. Aufgenommen wurde es am 7. Oktober 2024 im australischen Adelaide.

Reinhören kann man außerdem in die Single “Wraith” in Form eines Musikvideos sowie die Preview-Tracks “APEP” sowie “A.D.D” bei YouTube. Zu “FRIENDINTHEDARK” hat man ebenfalls einen Clip bei YouTube online gestellt.

Außerdem gibt es einen Videoclip zum Track “The Great Depression” bei YouTube.

Produziert, gemischt und gemastert wurden die Stücke von Callan Orr in den Avalanche Studios.

Gitarrist und Sänger Jake Crawford erklärt:

“‘Smother’ ist ein Song, der aus ungefilterter Introspektion und schierer Verzweiflung geboren wurde. Die bewusst nachbohrende erste Zeile ‘Are you being honest with yourself?’ war eher eine Frage an mich selbst, geschweige denn an das potentielle Publikum. Ich und [Gitarrist] Luke [Caley] standen zum Zeitpunkt der Entstehung des Songs sicherlich unter Druck.

Nach zwei schweren Trennungen, einer Band und einer privaten, suchten wir buchstäblich nach etwas, wofür es sich zu leben lohnt. Textlich war es eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit. Luke kam mit dem Refrain, mit dem ich sofort etwas anfangen konnte. Er inspirierte mich dann dazu, das Gefühl der völligen Orientierungslosigkeit in dieser Zeit zu ergründen. Der Rest ging relativ leicht von der Hand, da wir uns sicherlich in ähnlichen Situationen befanden, wenn auch aus leicht unterschiedlichen Perspektiven.”

Die Pagan Metal-Band REN MARABOU AND THE BERSERKERS hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Iren ihr neues Album “Helgafjell” veröffentlichen, welches am 29. März 2024 zu erwarten sein wird. Es ist nach “Tales Of Rune” (2022) das zweite Album des Trios, welches aus Sänger und Gitarrist Ren Marabou, Drummer Terence McCann sowie Bassist Michael Casserly besteht. Als ich anlässlich der großartigen „Black Rider On The Storm“-Kollaboration von KING DUDE mit DER BLUTHARSCH behauptete, dass dies der wohl letzte Tonträger ist, an dem Albin Julius beteiligt war, hatte ich mich zum Glück geirrt. Der am 04.05.2022 mit nur 54 Jahren überraschend gestorbene Boss von DER BLUTHARSCH hat auch postum noch einige „Pfeile im Köcher“ und umtriebig wie er stets war, diverses Material und Kollaborationen in Vorbereitung gehabt. Eines davon ist das Album von BEDOUIN TEMPLE, ein Projekt zusammen mit Dennis Lamb. dem u.a. ehemaligen Gitarristen der Straight Edge-HC-Band PRAYER FOR CLEANSING. Jener tauchte ja schon öfters auf DER BLUTHARSCH-Veröffentlichungen auf und bei BEDOUINE TEMPLE gesellen sich davon Marthynna, Jörg B. und Georg O. noch dazu, wie auch Mitglieder von SAECULUM OBSCURUM, einer Death/Black Metal-Band, bei der Dennis Lamb ebenso mitwirkt. Das es dann bei BEDOUIN TEMPLE irgendwie psychedelisch-pilzig wird, legt ja schon das Coverartwork nahe und der äußere Scheint trügt nicht. Anfangs klimpert zwar noch recht ziellos eine Akustik-Folk-Flamenco-Gitarre herum, aber im Hintergrund rauschen schon mächtig die Space-Sounds von Albin Julius + der hexisch-dämonischen Gesang von Marthynna, die einem startenden Düsen-Jet gleich in die für THE INFINITE CURCH OF THE LEADING HAND typischen Stoner Rock-Gitarren-Riffs aufzugehen und sich dazu noch männliches Growling mischen. Nach den ersten rund 19 Minuten des Albums bzw. dem Opener „Tomorrow“ ist man eigentlich schon ganz schön fertig, aber das folgende deutlich kürzer ausgefallene „Aleph“ gönnt mit seinen kraftvoll stolpernden Drums und nervös mäandernden Gitarren keine wirkliche Pause, zumal auch in der Hälfte der 6 Minuten wieder Marthynnas Klage-Gesang einsetzt. Die 20 Minuten vom abschließenden „The Fall“ sind zwar Anfangs noch transzendent-krautrockig dröhnend, gegen Ende setzten aber wieder die tiefer gestimmten Gitarren-Riffs, kräftiges Schlagzeug und Marthynna mit ein. Die Summa Summarum dreiviertel Stunde des Albums ist schon eine regelrechte Tour de Force und ein heftiger Trip, auf den man sich einlassen kann und muss. Das Album von BEDOUIN TEMPLE ist mal wieder der Beweis, das Albin Julius im hier und jetzt fehlt, aber eben auch, dass sein Vermächtnis weiter lebt und ordentlich bewahrt wird! (Marco Fiebag)

Die Death / Black Metal-Band NECROWRETCH hat mit “Swords of Dajjal” ein neues Album herausgebracht. Es ist das fünfte Album der Franzosen, ein Video zur Single “Vae Victis” gibt es jetzt bei YouTube.

“Wir haben uns entschieden, uns auf die Figur des Dajjal zu konzentrieren, im Grunde der Antichrist in der muslimischen Religion. Der Koran sagt, dass er als falscher Prophet auftreten wird, um mit einer Armee von Dämonen, die aus dem Osten kommt, das Unheil über die Welt zu bringen. Auf dem Cover des Albums ist er mit seinem zweischneidigen Schwert abgebildet und in dasselbe rötliche und orangefarbene, hypnotisierende Licht getaucht, das man erleben kann, wenn die Sonne über windgepeitschten Wüsten untergeht”, erklärt die Band.

“Swords of Dajjal”, das am 2. Februar 2024 via Season of Mist Underground Activists erschienen ist, wurde mit einem Cover-Artwok von Stéfan Thanneur ausgestattet. Die Metalcore-Band DEFOCUS meldet sich mit einer weiteren Single zurück: “Don’t Let It Hurt Me” bei YouTube. Dabei handelt es sich um einen Preview-Song des neuen Albums “There Is A Place For Me On Earth”, das am 1. März 2024 via Arising Empire auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erschienen ist.

Mit “48 Moons” wird in wenigen Wochen das neue Album der Stoner Rock-Band THE MAGOGAS erscheinen. Es ist das erste Album des italienischen Trios aus Venedig, welches aus Bassist Fabio Cester, Gitarrist Jacopo Nava und Drummerin Lisa Cappellazzo besteht.

The beautiful chrysanthemum originally derives its name from the Latin version of ancient Greek χρυσάνθεμον that means ‘gold flower’. Its humble white form is also known as the cemetery flower as it is often used to adorn graves for its longevity.

For BLACK NAIL CABARET, the chrysanthemum’s blossom paves the way for our own deathbed portraits. We know that the grim reaper will come to us all and bring the end, which turns us into fear-filled jars. Even though it is usually beyond our range of hearing, we are surrounded by a constant static noise of despair that is waiting to take over. Our jar could be filled with so many other things but fear permeates all. The eponymous “Chrysanthemum” of the Hungarian pop noire duo’s sixth album is an uprising but also acceptance.

Although BLACK NAIL CABARET remain true to their marked penchant for sexually explicit provocation, the primal, subconscious fear of death that triggers emotions, anxiety, and the fear of letting go is also a red thread running more or less through the album that is metaphorically named “Chrysanthemum”. The eroticism of the Hungarians has always avoided cheap clichés. Instead the duo artistically depicts their living BDSM reality, which is framed by high aesthetic standards.

Musically, BLACK NAIL CABARET have brought their outstanding songwriting abilities at least two steps closer to perfection. On “Chrysanthemum”, the duo is seemingly effortless blending dark electronic sounds with pop noire elements. That the Hungarians are not relying on electronic trickery but actually delivering strong compositions that can stand on their own and even survive transformation to acoustic instrumentation was concisely proved by the experimental full-length “Woodland Memoirs” (2023) that was released under the moniker BLACK NAIL CABARET AND FRIENDS.

This has set BLACK NAIL CABARET apart from their peers at the latest with the self-released full-length “Pseudopop” (2018) that successfully fused art, pop, dark harmonies, and powerful electronics. Their fourth album first left an impressive mark upon the electronic music scene of their native Hungary and later received an international relaunch. 
 

BLACK NAIL CABARET only began to target the international scene with their fifth full-length “Gods Verging on Sanity” in 2020. The duo soon gained an excellent reputation that rapidly spread through word of mouth even though the global pandemic enforced severe limitations upon them.
 
Now that the stars have all aligned, BLACK NAIL CABARET are ready to take on the world with a dark soundtrack of life’s glory that is symbolised by a shiny white flower of seeming innocence that at closer inspection also carries all the eternal might of death in its scent: “Chrysanthemum”.

Die Symphonic / Progressive Metal-Band SYMAKYA hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Franzosen aus Nancy ihr neues Album “Project 11: The Landing” veröffentlichen. Es ist nach “Majestic 12: Open Files” (2011) – und stolzen 13 Jahren – das zweite Album der 2008 gegründeten Band, die von der Prä-Astronautik inspiriert ist.

Mit “Project 11: The Landing” begibt sich die Band auf die Suche nach Zeichen und Beweisen, um die menschliche Evolution, Komplexität und das Streben nach Wahrheit zu erklären.

Von Mika Jussila gemastert wird das Album am 5. April 2024 erscheinen.

Die Cosmic Grunge-Band HIJSS hat einen Labeldeal bei Heavy Psych Sounds unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Italiener ihr neues Album “Stuck On Common Ground” veröffentlichen. Es ist das erste Album des Trios und wird am 8. März 2024 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach dem Video-Clip zu “1234me” und dem Track “Narcolepsy” mit dem Video zu “Blow Out” nun einen dritten Vorab-Track.

Auch mit dem fünften Album bleiben DEAD BY APRIL ihrer Philosophie treu. Die Schweden spielen ihre Stärken souverän aus, um 13 eingängige und melodische Hits zu komponieren, die verschiedenste Anleihen zu einem zuckrigen Modern / Alternative Metal-Mix vereinen. So versprüht der Sprechgesang in „Outcome“ oder “Everest” typische Nu-Metal-Vibes, während die allseits präsenten Synthesizer der Platte einen zeitgemäßen und teils futuristischen Anstrich verpassen.

Die elektronischen Elemente harmonieren dabei ausgezeichnet mit den soften Pop-Melodien, die sich schnell im Ohr festsetzen und zwischenzeitlich von ein paar aggressiveren Parts unterbrochen werden. Während dieser Passagen zitieren DEAD BY APRIL aus dem Modern Metalcore („Save The Cheerleader“) bzw. der softeren „Octane-Core“-Variante, wie sie in einschlägigen Radio-Sendungen zu hören ist („Hurricane“, „Feeding Demons“). Ungeachtet der dosiert eingesetzten Screams bleibt der Fokus aber auf dem hellen Klargesang, mit dem uns die Skandinavier eigentlich im Sekundentakt Honig ums Maul schmieren. Beizeiten mit ordentlichem Erfolg („My Light“, „Anything At All“), oft aber übertreibt es die Band mit ihrem Mainstream-Faible.

Zwischen überbordendem Keyboard-Einsatz und Pop-Harmonien stellt sich auf halbem Weg unweigerlich ein Sättigungsgefühl ein – auch weil weder Singstimme noch Melodiebögen oder Produktion dieser Tage in irgendeiner Weise herauszustechen vermögen. Was DEAD BY APRIL zur Spitze fehlt, sind Charisma, Hitgespür sowie ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Von allem besitzt „The Affliction“ eine ordentliche Menge, aber eben doch nicht genug, um sich mittelfristig gegen etablierte Größen wie MOTIONLESS IN WHITE durchsetzen oder es in kreativer Hinsicht mit der Experimentierfreude THE BUNNY THE BEARs aufnehmen zu können.

Andererseits weiß das Quartett mittlerweile ganz genau, was funktioniert und was die eigene Anhängerschaft erwartet. Diesbezüglich bietet auch die neue Platte eine ganze Menge Stoff, der mit synth-gestütztem Breakdown und kraftvollem Gesang in „Wasteland“ auch richtig kurzweilig ausfallen kann. Das tröstest zumindest ein wenig darüber hinweg, dass DEAD BY APRIL anno 2024 insgesamt trotzdem in der zweiten Reihe Platz nehmen müssen.

Die Psychedelic / Stoner Rock-Band IOTA hat nach dem Track “The Returner” mit “The Timekeeper” einen Video-Clip ihres kommenden Albums “Pentasomnia” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Tales” (2008) das zweite Album des US-amerikanischen Trios aus Salt Lake City, welches aus Gitarrist, Synthesizer und Sänger Joey Toscano (DWELLERS), Bassist Oz “Inglorious” Yosri (Ex-BIRD EATER) sowie Drummer Andy Patterson (THE OTOLITH, OXCROSS, Ex-SUBROSA) besteht.

“”Pentasomnia” ist eine Verschmelzung”, sagt Toscano, “grob übersetzt bedeutet das ‘fünf Träume’. Jeder Song wird aus der Perspektive eines anderen mentalen Zustands erzählt. Die Hard / Heavy Rock-Band S.O.R.M hat ihren Song “Under My Skin” aus dem gleichnamigen Album (2023) in einer neuen Version veröffentlicht. Als Gast zu hören ist in der überarbeiteten Fassung auch Doug Blair (W.A.S.P.).

Warum die Single nun als Power-Ballade erscheint, erklärt Gitarrist und Sänger Micke Holm:

“Diese Version von ‘Under My Skin’ war von Anfang an die Originalversion des Songs. Sie sollte eigentlich auf dem Album sein, wurde aber leider nicht rechtzeitig fertig. Deshalb haben wir eine Klavierversion für die Platte gemacht. Bei dieser Powerballaden-Version haben wir die Ehre, mit Doug Blair von den legendären W.A.S.P und Anna Brygård vom Nightflight Orchestra zusammenzuarbeiten.”

Die Stoner / Doom Metal-Band SALTPIG hat einen Labeldeal bei Heavy Psych Sounds Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird das internationale Duo, welches aus Mitch Davis (SUNBOMB), der eher als Produzent bekannt ist, und Fabio Alessandrini (BONFIRE, ANNIHILATOR) besteht, am 31. Mai 2024 ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum auch als CD und LP veröffentlichen. Im Eigenvertrieb erschien bereits die digitale und eine Tape-Version des Albums. Mit “Burn The Witch” hat das Duo nun auch einen Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

Die Diskussion sollte sich hiermit erübrigen: AMARANTHE sind nun endgültig oben angekommen. Mit ihrem siebten Album “The Catalyst” (#3) knacken die Schweden nicht nur erstmalig die Top Ten, sondern nehmen gleich auf dem Treppchen Platz. 2020 erreichte “Manifest” noch Rang zwölf. Auch die Münchner Alternative Rocker BLACKOUT PROBLEMS erreichen zum ersten Mal die besten Zehn: “Riot” steigert sich im Vergleich zu “Dark” (2021, #12) um sieben Positionen und steht nun auf der Fünf. DUST BOLT scheint die musikalischer Kurskorrektur derweil ganz gut zu tun: Der modernere Stil kommt an, wie der Satz von Platz 96 (“Trapped In Chaos”, 2019) auf die 17 mit “Sound & Fury” nahelegt.

Auch ACE FREHLEY legt ein wenig zu: “10,000 Volts” schafft es auf Nummer 21 – für “Origins Vol. 2” war 2020 auf der 34 Schluss. Eine ähnliche Entwicklung im Übrigen wie BORKNAGAR, deren “Fall” auf Rang 23 ebenfalls eine Steigerung im Vergleich zu “True North” (2019, #31) bedeutet.

Auch FIREWIND haben neues Material in Form von “Stand United” am Start, während SUICIDAL ANGELS auf “Profane Prayer” die Thrash-Keule schwingen.

Das DARK EASTER METAL MEETING geht 2024 in eine neue Runde: Am 30. und 31. März 2024 wird im Münchner Backstage wieder auf drei Bühnen gefeiert, wobei es bei den Acts der beiden Hauptbühnen im Werk sowie in der Halle keine Überschneidungen geben wird. Auftreten werden  insgesamt 32 Bands, darunter auch die Headliner TIAMAT, die zum 35-jährigen Jubiläum ein Best-Of-Set angekündigt haben, sowie SODOM, welche ein spezielles “80er Oldschool-Set” vorbereiten werden.

Die komplette Running Order haben wir weiter unten in einer Übersicht zusammengefasst.

Weiterhin bestätigt haben die Organisatoren zuvor ENDSTILLE, IMHA TARIKAT, MORTEM, SYLVAINE, PHANTOM WINTER und SUR AUSTRU. Außerdem wurden DEATHRITE, HELLBUTCHER, ANGSTSKRÍG, ASPHAGOR, CIEMRA, FAIR OF THE FORGOTTEN, GRAND CADAVER, BEWITCHED, CULT OF FIRE, PSYCHONAUT 4, KAMPFAR, NOCTE OBDUCTA, THY CATAFALQUE, TAAKE, CHAPEL OF DISEASE, PERCHTA sowie JESAJAH für die neue Auflage gewonnen. Darüber hinaus haben EIS eine besondere Jubiläumsshow angekündigt und spielen das Album “Galeere” in voller Länge. Gebucht sind außerdem DYMNA LOTVA, BENEDICTION, MORK, NORDJEVEL sowie THEOTOXIN.

Tickets für die elfte Auflage des Indoor-Festivals gab es ab 25. September 2023 (17:00 Uhr) zum Early-Bird-Tarif. Der reguläre Vorverkauf startete am 13. November 2023 u.a. über backstage.eu; mittlerweile ist das DARK EASTER METAL MEETING ausverkauft.

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band MOLTEN hat mit “Scorched” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Malicide” veröffentlicht. Zuvor ist mit “Malicide” der Titeltrack des Albums erschienen. Es ist nach “Dystopian Syndrome” (2021) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus San Francisco.

“Malicide”, das von Greg Wilkinson in den Earhammer Studios in Oakland produziert worden ist, taucht in eine Fülle von Themenbereichen ein und erforscht Konzepte von Krieg, Korruption, innerer Zerrissenheit, Fantasie, Horror und Weltzerstörung. Erscheinen wird das Album, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Noah Cutter Meihoff ausgestattet wurde, am 6. März 2024 via Transylvanian Recordings.

Die Dark Rock / Gothic-Band NACHTFALTER hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Du bist mein”, dem Video-Clip zu “Was willst du nur?“, dem Video zu “Narbentage” und dem Video zu “Im Feuer” mit “…und der Falter tanzt” ein weiteres Video ihres kommenden Albums “Abschied” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Was bleibt” (2019) das zweite Album des (inzwischen) Solo-Projekts von Tobias Serfling.

Die US-amerikanische Extreme Metal-Band VORAATH hat mit “Vol 1: The Hymn of the Hunters” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner und wird am 17. Juni 2024 via Exitus Stratagem Records erscheinen. Es ist das erste Album des neuen Projekts rund um Sänger und Gitarrist Brad Parris (NILE, XAEL), Drummer, Sänger und Keyboarder Joshua Nassaru Ward (XAEL, RAPHEUMETS WELL), den Gitarristen Tylor Kohl und Daniel Presnell (XAEL, Ex-RAPHEUMETS WELL) sowie Bassist Paul McBride (IMPLOSIVE DISGORGENCE, SWEET BLOOD).

Vorab ist nach “The Barrens” mit “Judas Blood and Vultures” eine weitere neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip erschienen.

Im November 2021 ist mit “Siren Head” die erste Single der Band erschienen. “Mein siebenjähriger Sohn liebt es, Gruselgeschichten über eine Kreatur namens “Siren Head” zu sehen”, erklärt Joshua Nassaru Ward. “Es stellte sich heraus, dass viele Kinder in seinem Alter in diese Monster vernarrt sind, also wollten wir unsere Interpretation von Siren Head auf der Grundlage des Künstlers Trevor Henderson schreiben.”

Mit “Martyr of Fire and Star” wird in einigen Wochen das neue Album der Black Metal-Band ARISTARCHOS erscheinen. Es ist nach “Aristarchos” (2021) das zweite Album der schottischen Band aus Glasgow.

I’m keeping everything to myself.
The suburbs of Delaware, with their serene landscapes and quintessential American neighborhoods, might not be the first place one would associate with the introspective and often turbulent sounds of shoegaze. Its ethereal textures, dense guitar work, and introspective lyrics, are more often linked to urban angst and the underground music scenes. Yet, it’s precisely this contrast between the calm, orderly life in Delaware’s suburbs and the immersive, often noisy world of shoegaze that makes an artist like Rew stand out.

In such a setting, the isolation and quietude of suburban life could foster a deep internal space for creativity and emotional exploration, allowing an artist to craft sounds that both clash with and complement their surroundings. This juxtaposition adds a unique layer to the artist’s work, as the tranquil backdrop of Delaware provides an unexpected cradle for the creation of music that is anything but serene.

Rew’s music is a unique fusion of shoegaze, emo, grunge, and bedroom pop, reflecting his deep involvement in every step from writing to mastering, which lends his work an unmistakable personal touch that resonates with a wide audience. His lyrics, both intimate and universally relatable, strike a deep chord.

Accompanying his music, the self-directed video for Ruin is like a series of strange daydreams and night terrors, showcasing Rew’s ability to merge the everyday with the surreal, drawing viewers into a space where reality and imagination intertwine.

The Joy of Elephant is hitting the airwaves today with their debut single, I Never Kill (on a Sunday), from their forthcoming debut album. This track is a bold fusion of psychedelia, post-punk’s gritty intensity, and gospel’s transcendent vibes, creating an intriguing musical blend that defies expectations. The Joy of Elephant sounds like something that left time, and came back, mirrored in an unknown dimension.

Svein Petter Nilssen, the visionary behind this project, crafted I Never Kill (on a Sunday) as a reflective meditation on the ethical dilemmas posed by imperialism, the superficial justifications for heinous deeds, and a pronounced lack of empathy and understanding for “the others,” all entangled in a web of religious, ideological, and deliberate ignorance. Sadly, Nilssen notes, the song’s relevance has only intensified since its creation.

The song commences with a vibe akin to a noir film’s anti-hero, encapsulating Nilssen’s resolve to eschew any creative constraints in his work. The track exudes a nostalgic late 90s aura, reminiscent of the era when bands like The Dandy Warhols, Eels, Beck, Kula Shaker, and Primal Scream were defining the soundscape. An Eastern influence permeates the composition, adding a mystical layer to the witty premise of abstaining from violence on Sundays, while subtly suggesting that the rest of the week might not be as sacrosanct.

Nilssen confesses the initial spark for I Never Kill (on a Sunday) was ignited by his disdain for the dogmatic belligerence of conservative war hawks and their acolytes. Yet, as the composition unfolded, it became evident that the critique extended beyond any singular ideology or standpoint, revealing a broader critique of societal hypocrisy. “One need only pause and reflect to perceive the absurdity of such self-righteous duplicity,” Nilssen muses.

When prodded about the possibility of live performances, Nilssen’s response is tantalizingly vague. “It’s a conundrum,” he admits, elaborating on his initial vision for the project as an unbridled exploration of musical storytelling, unfettered by conventional considerations. Yet, the prospect of taking his work to the stage has become increasingly appealing, especially with a cadre of talented friends eager to bring The Joy of Elephant’s music to life.

Die Progressive Rock-Band YES stellt ihr aktuelles Album “Mirror To The Sky” mit einem Lyric-Video zum Titeltrack bei YouTube vor. Es handelt sich dabei um einen gekürzten “Single Edit” des Stücks.

Ebenfalls verfügbar: “All Connected” bei YouTube. Zu “Cut From The Stars” hat man bereits vor einiger Zeit einen Clip veröffentlicht.

Produziert wurde die Platte von Gitarrist Steve Howe, der Folgendes über das neue Werk zu sagen hat:

“Wir haben die Kontinuität des Ansatzes beibehalten, den wir bei ‘The Quest’ verfolgt haben, aber wir haben uns nicht wiederholt. Das war die Hauptsache. Wie YES in den siebziger Jahren von einem Album zum anderen, wachsen wir und bewegen uns vorwärts. In späteren Jahren haben YES oft losgelegt, aber dann nicht das nächste Ding gemacht. Dieses Album zeigt, dass wir wachsen und wieder etwas aufbauen.”

“Mirror To The Sky” erschien am 19. Mai 2023 via InsideOut Music auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Für den 5. April 2024 ist eine Neuauflage geplant, welche neben dem regulären Album auch die Instrumentalfassung sowie einen Dolby Atmos 5.1 Surround Mix auf BluRay enthält.

Originating from Normandy, France, psychedelic noise-pop quartet You Said Strange presents a unique blend of indie rock that incorporates elements of psych pop-rock, shoegaze, and proto-grunge. Hot on the heels of their latest visual release for the EP’s title track, the band unveils another slice from the project, a compelling track titled My Own God.

In a move that might make the indie rock purists do a double-take, the band has decided to throw caution to the wind and actually release a song that you can hum along to without a degree in existential philosophy. Their latest track dives headfirst into the murky waters of trust, emerging with a catchy tune that’s all about the sting of betrayal and the eye-roll-worthy letdowns from our so-called heroes. The rallying cry? “Let’s be our own God!” Because, honestly, who hasn’t been there?

With a melody that hooks you faster than a late-night infomercial and a beat that could make even the most rhythmically challenged consider dancing, the song is a masterclass in indie-rock earworms. Eliot’s vocals ride the dark wave like a surfer with a penchant for existential dread, delivering punchy lyrics with the kind of euphoria that makes you want to believe in something—preferably yourself. Adding a sprinkle of magic is a female voice that not only echoes Eliot’s sentiments but also steps into the spotlight towards the end, shining a beam of light and balancing the scales with a touch of feminine flair.

With My Own God, the band takes a leap into the metaphysical, pondering the age-old question: if the man upstairs is MIA, did we just draft him into existence to keep our societal ship from capsizing? And because they love to keep things interesting, they’re serving up this existential buffet with a side of visuals—a mockumentary-style video that smells distinctly of ’90s nostalgia, cheekily nodding to the dark humour of “C’est arrivé près de chez vous” and the quirky charm of The Lemon Twigs’ “I Wanna Prove to You.”

Five folks, each a walking cliché of various addictions, huddled in a therapy circle that feels more like a scene from a sitcom than a soul-searching session. As the video unfolds, it peels back the layers of these caricatures, delving into the tumultuous sea of their inner conflicts, all while keeping a straight face. It’s a tongue-in-cheek journey through the quest for personal meaning amidst the facade of control, making My Own God a whimsical ride through the chaos of existence. Because, in the end, aren’t we all just trying to direct our own mockumentaries?

Trade Your Soul  marks a significant milestone for the band, seeing them broaden their horizons with a more striking musical approach and a number of innovations. Even still, they continue to create the work of passionate musicians who combine dazzling instrumentation and the union of voices to fuse melancholy and energy alike.

The band recorded their first album, Salvation Prayer, in 2018 in Portland (USA), with Peter G. Holmstrom from The Dandy Warhols. In 2022, the band shared their LP Thousand Shadows Vol. 1. Mythomaniac kings, the Mediterranean, the colors of mourning — these are the detailed subjects, described against a backdrop of psychedelic pop, proto grunge, and shoegaze. The first part of a powerful, reverberant, melodious second album, drawing its inspiration and production stem from encounters during their 2022 European and North American tours, between Normandy, New York, and Oregon. Most recently, You Said Strange shared the second part of their sophomore release, a follow-up to Vol. 1 entitled Thousand Shadows Vol. 2.

The new EP is a post-rock tale unfolding as a metaphorical journey of spirituality through life’s most intense and intimate emotions and experiences — it demystifies the heroes and figures in whom we place our trust, covers themes of betrayal and disillusionment as key elements of the human journey, reflects on the use of faith and spirituality as metaphorical tools for apprehending human reality, raises profound questions about the creation of social frameworks in the absence of a concrete creator, and offers a quest for and discovery of true love.

The upcoming EP was the fruit of exciting collaborations with friends Marvin Borges-Soares(Structures), Raphaëlle Verlaine (Metro Verlaine), Joseph Baudet. Their contributions added a unique dimension to three of the tracks. This EP was also an opportunity to collaborate with engineers Arthur Guegan and Daniel James Goodwin. The project was additionally mixed and mastered by Daniel J. Goodwin.

Trade Your Soul is out March 29 via EXAG / Le Cèpe Records.

Die Blues Rock-Ikone WALTER TROUT veröffentlicht sein neues Studioalbum “Broken” am 1. März via Provogue/Mascot Label Group. “Ich habe immer versucht, positive Songs zu schreiben, und dieses Album ist nicht ganz so positiv”, sagt der 72-Jährige. “Aber ich halte immer an der Hoffnung fest. Ich glaube, das ist der Grund, warum ich dieses Album geschrieben habe.”

Zum Release präsentiert TROUT nun das Video zum Song „Talking to Myself“. Über den neuen Song sagt er: “Die Inspiration für den Song basiert auf meiner Erfahrung, dass unsere Welt voller TV-Sensationen und Menschen in den sozialen Medien, die um Aufmerksamkeit buhlen, sich nicht wirklich dafür interessieren, was wir zu sagen haben. Wir reden also, aber niemand hört zu.”

In Vorfeld gab es bereits das Video „Broken“ mit Blues-Lady BETH HART sowie „Bleed“ mit Harmonica-Virtuose Will Wilde. Zum Titelsong sagt TROUT: “Bei diesem Song habe ich auf die Welt geblickt – vor allem auf das, was in den Vereinigten Staaten vor sich geht – aber ich habe auch darüber nachgedacht, wie ich mich von den Dingen, die mir passiert sind, erholt habe. Ich hatte die erste Strophe – ‘Pieces of me seem to break away/I lose a little more every day’. Aber es war fast zu viel für mich, wieder in diese Scheiße zu geraten. Also konnte mir meine Frau Marie bei den Texten helfen – und sie hat es geschafft. Das Gitarrensolo ist vielleicht mein Lieblingsstück auf der Platte. Ich habe es mit der Band eingespielt, in einem Take. Ich wollte sehen, ob ich es übertreffen kann – aber sie hielten mich davon ab!”

Auch DEE SNIDER (TWISTED SISTER) ist auf dem Album vertreten. “Dee stellte einen Live-Mitschnitt von mir auf seinen Twitter-Account und sagte: ‘Hör dir diesen verdammten Gitarrenhelden an’. Wir kamen ins Gespräch, wurden Freunde, er kam ins Studio und ich wusste, dass ich ihm einen Song schreiben musste. Also dachte ich: ‘Nun, er hat ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It gemacht’. Also schrieb ich ‘I’ve Had Enough’. Und es rockt, und zwar gewaltig.”

WALTER TROUT war dieses Jahr bereits auf Tour in Australien, den USA und kommt im März auch zu uns. Über die Tournee sagt er: “Musik ist meine Flucht vor allem, was in unserer Welt kaputt ist. Kommt vorbei und rockt Euren Blues mit meiner Band und mir weg.”
