Das schon lange angekündigte neue Album von THE CURE lässt weiter auf sich warten, aber dafür dreht sich der Wiederveröffentlichungsreigen munter weiter, wenn auch mit einigen fragwürdigen Entscheidungen. So wurde zum Beispiel das erste offizielle Live-Album „Concert“ damals bei den ersten Schwung der Deluxe-Editionen nicht mit berücksichtigt (eventuell weil es „Killing An Arab“ enthält?), dafür jedoch „Entreat“ mit in das „Disintegration“-Set integriert. Im vorigen Jahr dann die Wiederauflage des dritten Live-Albums „Show“ auf Vinyl, aber komischerweise nicht im CD- und DVD-Format. Dem folgt jetzt der seiner Zeit parallel mit „Show“ veröffentlichte Live-Mitschnitt „Paris“ als Doppel-LP und diesmal aber eben auch wieder auf CD. Neben dem neuen Mastering von Robert Smith und Miles Showell in den berühmten Abbey Road Studios, bietet die Neuauflage zwei bisher unveröffentlichte Songs der damaligen drei Konzert-Abende im Pariser La Zenith. Diese sind „Shake Dog Shake“ und Hot Hot Hot!!!“, was das an sich schon fantastische Live-Album noch mal zusätzlich aufwertet. THE CURE waren 1992 nach dem erfolgreichen „Wish“-Album in Hochform, was sich auch daran festmachen kann, dass es zwischen „Show“ und „Paris“ keine Überschneidungen in der Setliste gibt! „Show“ zeigte damals mehr das bunte Pop-Gesicht von THE CURE und „Paris“ war dann eher der dunkle Gegenpart dazu. Höhepunkt neben den euphorischen Zuschauer-Reaktionen sind u.a. die großartige Gänsehaut-Hymne „Play For To Day“, das todtraurige „Apart“ und die fast schon hastig-hektisch-schnell gespielte „Charlotte Sometimes“-Interpretation. Das ganze Live-Album an sich ist ein wunderbar atmosphärisch eingefangener Sternstundenmoment in der davon nicht gerade armen Geschichte von THE CURE! Kaum zu glauben, das dies alles nun schon wieder 30 Jahre her und die Band immer noch auf Welt-Tournee ist. 50 % der Einnahmen aus dem Verkauf der 30th Anniversary-Edition von „Paris“ gehen übrigens (wie seiner Zeit auch schon) an das Rote Kreuz, was einmal mehr die karikative Ader von THE CURE aufzeigt. Die aktuelle CD-Ausgabe enthält gegenüber der Original-Version ein etwas erweitertes Booklet und die Rückseite des dünnen Papp-Digifiles hat mittig einen Falz, so das man dieses leicht knicken und so die CD besser entnehmen kann. Habe ich in dieser Form bisher noch nie gesehen und muss eine Neuheit sei und wo wir gerade bei dem Thema Neu sind Herr Smith…???!!! (Marco Fiebag)

In the grand pantheon of rock, where legends hang their six-strings and drumsticks after blazing trails of glory, Q’s Population II quietly – but determinedly – refuses to play by the established rules. This inventive trio is as comfortable in their musical skin as they are indifferent to the mainstream’s siren call: Pierre-Luc Gratton, who not only belts out tunes but also beats the drums into submission; Tristan Lacombe, a guitar slinger who’s not afraid to tickle the ivories; and Sébastien Provençal, whose bass lines are so deep they might just touch the earth’s core.

These guys whip up a sound that’s one part heavy psychedelic rock, a dash of feverish funk, a sprinkle of jazz wisdom, and a whole lot of punk energy. They’ve also folded in a generous helping of minor scales that’ll have the metalheads nodding in solemn approval. The cherry on top: Pierre-Luc’s voice, which is as distinctive as his lyrics are introspectively quirky.

Hailing from Saint-Joseph-du-Lac, a spot in Q as famous for its apples as it is for now birthing this band, Population II are pushing boundaries with their latest EP, Serpent Échelle (set to drop on April 17), an expedition into the wilder side of their sound, laden with symbols and riffs.

R.B., the lead-off single, is a musical rollercoaster that refuses to adhere to any preconceived track. The band masterfully transitions from grand, sweeping orchestral crescendos to the gritty, mind-bending twists of lysergic riffs. It’s as if Beethoven and Hendrix decided to throw a jam session in the middle of a tempest – unpredictable, thrilling. R.B. is a manifesto for the times we live in; a soundtrack to the age of global unease. Population II doesn’t shy away from the big picture, addressing the ticking clock of our era with a sense of urgency that pulses through every note – yet, they remind us that even as the shadow of doom looms large, there’s a luminous side to life waiting to be embraced.

Despite the maelstrom and doomscrolling of daily life in the 21st century, we still celebrate love, the warmth of genuine friendships, and the simple, yet profound pleasure found in a glass of wine. There are still moments of beauty, connection, and joy to be found. Live fully, love deeply, and toast the moments that make life worth living.

The lovely black and white visualizer directed by Didier Pigeon-Perreault and Hugo Jeanson takes us on a frosty winter walk where we can stop and ponder the wonders of nature:



Population II’s story begins in the shared teenage years of its members, where countless jam sessions eventually forged a near-telepathic bond between them. This synergy led to several independent releases, catching the eye of John Dwyer of Osees and head of Castle Face Records. This connection birthed their first major album release, À la Ô Terre, in 2020. Over the next two years, the band made their mark across Canada and the US, with notable performances at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Pop Montreal, Toronto, New York, and Q City.

Their inspiration draws from a rich and varied palette: the raw energy of Detroit’s late 60s garage rock and psychedelic funk, the experimental vibes of the Canterbury scene, the bold sounds of 70s German rock, and the groundbreaking phases of Miles Davis. These influences merge uniquely against the backdrop of Pointe-Calumet’s murky environment, all underpinned by the trio’s deep friendship and undeniable synergy. Deliberately distancing themselves from Montreal’s music scene, Population II has carved out a distinctive sound that stands apart from fleeting musical trends, marking them as a unique presence rising from the metaphorical swamp, defined by both dreamlike atmospheres and intense, cathartic bursts.

Post-Punk.com had a chat with Population II about the band’s evolution, their use of violin, and a few thoughts on the new single:

This is the first single off of an upcoming four track EP. What about these songs led you to pair them up for an EP,  rather than include them on a future album?

Three songs of this EP were supposed to be on Électrons libres (Hélène, R.B. & Comme tu le souhaites). They had a different vibe and the songwriting was also going another with these three songs. We thought R.B. was going to be a central piece of Électrons libres but it just didn’t fit the pacing of the other songs of the album. We knew we had to use them for an EP since it was so different and then we remembered we had a hypnotic jam in 9/8, Le Serpent that felt really cohesive to the three songs on the EP. It all fits nicely in the end!

Emmanuel Ethier plays some violin on this track, which is rather unusual for the psych-rock genre—how did you end up incorporating it into the track?

Emmanuel was already playing live shows with us on the violin! We met him for À la Ô Terre and then he quickly mentioned that he played violin. We invited him to play shows with us since we’re all fan of  Michal Urbaniak’s Inactin. We wrote R.B. and we thought the violin would bring a another layer to the orchestral theme. Emmanuel played the part, we liked it and kept it on the final mix!

How do you see the band’s sound evolving or changing on Serpent Echelle, in comparison to your last record?

The songwriting had step up. We decided to continue on our usual way of improvising first and then add the layers of arrangements. You can feel the different sections more clearly on Serpent Échelle. It has a more refined approach on the sections even though it can gets loud and rowdy has always. It’s something we aspire constantly, to elevate our songwriting and we’re still on this path.

Schon die ersten Alben „The Truth“ und „Black Magnolia“ von der Münsteraner Goth Wave Rock Band BURN konnten mich überzeugen und wer eben auf genau solche Bands wie THE CURE, FUNHOUSE, THE CONVENT, IN MY ROSARY, ANDREAS GROSS, THE ESSENCE, GIRLS UNDER GLASS, IN MITRA MEDUSA INRI, KLEZ.E, DR. ARTUR KRAUSE, CLAN OF XYMOX, DEAD GUITARS, THE CHAMELEONS, WHITE ROSE TRANSMISSION u.ä. aus dem Einzugsbereich steht, sollte hier unbedingt mal ein Ohr riskieren. Bei XYMOX, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, SCHANDMAUL, ASP, UNHEILIG und aktuell gerade bei L`AME IMMORTELLE spielten BURN das Vorprogramm und in Leipzig beim WGT waren sie auch schon aktiv und präsent, das spricht schon mal auf jeden Fall für die Qualität der Alternative Wave Truppe. Die Gitarrenlastigen und stimmungsvoll, dunklen Klanglandschaften gehen bei BURN von dynamischen Goth Rock bis zu elegischen 80s Melancholic Wave und über allem ragt die ausdrucksstarke, tragende, emotionale „ROBERT SMITH“ ähnliche Stimme von Sänger und Frontmann FELIX FRIBERG heraus. Schon die erste Single „Anomaly“ und die neue „Enola/Alone“ waren wieder fein definierte Songs mit tief gehenden Melodien und Elementen aus straighten Gitarren und knackigen Bassläufen, sowas hört man auch bei THE MISSION z.B. im Sound Gerüst. Die wunderbar arrangierten Songs gehen absolut in Richtung Suchtfaktor, die rockig aufwühlenden, dann mal wieder hymnischen und atmosphärischen 10 Tracks der neuen und schon fünften Platte transportieren dieses 80er Dark Wave Feeling ins hier und heute treffen damit absolut ins Rock Wave Herz. Guckt euch auch auf jeden Fall einmal die Videos zu „Locust“, „Ghost“,“Echo im Nichts“ oder „Magnetisch“, „Seelenfresser“ an, da wird die ganze Song Live Power der Jungs gut rübergebracht, also auch audiovisuell präsentieren sich BURN äußerst professionell und auch die deutschen oder englischen Texte sind sehr authentisch sowie nachdenklich und orientieren sich am Alltagsleben. Man ertappt sich hier immer wieder, das man so etwas auch schon mal selbst erlebt hat, also genau passend am Puls der Zeit gehalten. Sichert Euch die neue CD „Falling in Reverse“ und schwelgt in guten alten Dark Wave Goth Rock Zeiten und schaut Euch die Band irgendwo Live an, es lohnt sich.

Nick Hudson – Kanda Teenage Honey!

 

Brighton alternative pop artist Nick Hudson presents his new album ‘Kanda Teenage Honey’, an expansive collection of 16 tracks, recorded largely in a huge former Soviet movie studio in Georgia under the shadow of the Ukraine war. Previewed this week by the tracks ‘Ortolan’and ‘This Heat’, Hudson recently released the singles ‘For My Silence’ and ‘Khevsureti’, which recently garnered him coverage in Billboard.

Mixed by and featuring Toby Driver of Kayo Dot, this album is graced with numerous talented guests, including Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite, Stuart Dahlquist (Asva, Burning Witch, Sunn O))), Lizzy Carey (Bat For Lashes), Robert Wyatt collaborator Alfreda Benge, Christopher Nell (legendary German performer and collaborator of US theatre visionary Robert Wilson), and 14-year-old soprano prodigy Poppy Efemey.  

Recorded with Ilya Lukashev at Leno Studio and Sano Studio in Tbilisi, this album was mastered to analogue tape by Paul Pascoe (Barry Adamson, Beat Hotel, Sleaford Mods) at Church Road Studios in Hove, Hudson collaborates with some incredible Georgian musicians and his friend Seva, a Russian dissident who fled the FSB, having worked for Navalny. Hudson explains, “He contributes a poem narrating his thoughts on exile, through which I’ve layered field recordings of the recent Tbilisi and Paris protests, where many of us got tear-gassed.”

“Russia attempted to invade Georgia most recently in 2008 and we’ve seen a vast influx of Russians fleeing the conflict and resettling in Tbilisi (which endures and suffers a pro-Russian government ideologically in conflict with most of its citizens). This geopolitical tension has inevitably made its way into the lyrical and musical texture of the record via the songs ‘Hollow Man’ and ‘Sky Burial While Alive’. It also contains oligarch-hexing magic realism and a tribute to that vastly-neglected demographic – the old-school homosexual. Musically it encompasses art rock, black metal, ambient music, agitprop folk, charred goth rock, symphonic vastness and piano ballads -all infused with the energies and landscape of Georgia,” says Nick Hudson.

In 2021, Hudson released his ‘Font Of Human Fractures’ album and the ‘K69996ROMA:EP’. His band The Academy of Sun released their opus album ‘The Quiet Earth’ the year before. He’s collaborated with such legends as Wayne Hussey (The Mission), Matthew Seligman (David Bowie, Tori Amos, Morrissey), Massive Attack’s Shara Nelson, plus David Tibet (Current 93) and queercore icon GB Jones. His vast output also encompasses painting, film and a novel.

“As an album, ‘Kanda Teenage Honey’ explores ideas of preserving the sacred from the corrosively kleptocratic institutions of church and state: spiritual and material kleptocracy.  The title itself refers to a very real preservation of innocence derived from a story I heard of a local villager whose teenage son was shot and killed: the father had his son’s body preserved in honey. As such, there are secular hymns for peace and lucid stillness, tales of saints de-martyring themselves and falling in love free of judgement from anachronistic scrutiny – a thinly veiled parable of queer love.  Two very close friends died within six months of each other during my first year in Georgia – there are requiems in the songs ‘Archipelago’ and ‘Bardo’, plus an acappella tribute to the Siberian husky that helped me grieve them during a retreat to the sublime mountainous region of ‘Khevsureti’ by the Chechen border, where despite being an ostensibly Orthodox country, pagan traditions are still passionately observed.  I dreamed eighty-percent of ‘Bardo’ in the energised serenity of this beautiful region while mourning my friend Jesse. Patrick, honoured in ‘Archipelago’, was one of my earliest mentors and a dynamically brilliant pianist.  They are much missed,” explains Nick Hudson.

“‘Ortolan’ references the summer of 2021, when I fled to the same Isle Of Wight monastery at which Scott Walker had sought refuge in the sixties, as my mental and physical health hit a nadir and I was forced to leave the city I’d called home for twenty years. ‘This Heat’ refers to a return journey from a plague necropolis at the Chechen border, where giddily drunken park rangers piloting a 4X4 hurtled us passengers down a treacherous mountain pass and I briefly thought it might be the last song I’d ever write.  Since then, I’ve come to learn that Georgians are some of the virtuosic drivers in the world, even drunk, and I need not have feared.”

Hudson also just released his book ‘The Land Exists So The Seas Don’t Argue’, showcasing a decade of lyrical output in five albums plus ephemera  – satellite poems that inhabit the same world as each of the primary cosmologies. With a foreword by renowned Scottish author Chris Kelso, this collection embodies a searing intensity and unity of vision – paganism, queer love, grief, death, ecstasy, radical politics, social satire, hymns to nature, her rhythms and forces.

As of March 15, ‘Kanda Teenage Honey’ is available via Bandcamp, as well as other fine music platforms, such as Spotify and Apple Music. On March 16, Hudson celebrates with an album launch concert in Tbilisi, Georgia, which will be livestreamed for those who cannot be there in person.

TENSIDE haben in Zusammenarbeit mit Zardonic ihren Song “Pitch & Gold” als Remix-Version neu aufgelegt. Ursprünglich stammt der Track vom aktuellen Album “Come Alive Dying“, das am 19. Januar 2024 veröffentlicht wurde.

Mit der Single “Pretty Lonesome” stellten TENSIDE zuvor ein weiteres Stück daraus vor. Der Track folgt auf die Auskopplung “Silence Is Betrayal” und das Video zu “Impending Doom”. Als Gast zu hören ist hier zudem DARKEST HOUR-Frontmann John Henry.

Zuvor teilten die Münchner bereits einen Clip zu “Pitch & Gold”, ein Video zu „Come Alive Dying“, einen Clip zu “Shadow To Shine” sowie die beiden Singles “Aim For Paradise” und “Dust Of The Bereaved“.

Für die Produktion ihres 8. Studioalbums haben TENSIDE im bandeigenen Studio in München mit Co-Producer Christoph von Freydorf und mit Kristian „Kohle“ Kohlmannslehner im Kohlekeller Studios zusammengearbeitet. Joseph McQueen hat die Songs abgemischt, Ted Jensen übernahm das Mastering.

Die unverbesserlichen Headbanger von LEATHER LUNG lassen die Party steigen! Der Fünfer aus Boston, Massachusetts hat das Flehen seiner enthusiastischen Fangemeinde nach einer vollen Dröhnung Boogie Metal erhört und legt mit "Graveyard Grin" endlich das Debütalbum vor. Die Neuengländer halten mit diesem Kracher aus Stoner Metal, Doom, einer Prise Sludge und einem eingängigen Kick die großen Versprechen, die ihre bisherigen EPs abgegeben haben: Angefangen mit "Reap What You Sow" (2014) und gefolgt von "Lost in Temptation" (2016), "Lonesome, On'ry and Evil" (2019) und "Dive Bar Devil" (2022) haben sich LEATHER LUNG bereits in die Herzen ihrer wachsenden Anhängerschar gespielt. Der wilde Haufen von langjährigen Freunden formierte sich in der Bostoner Punk- und Hardcore-Szene aus reinem Spaß an Doom und Stoner Metal. RAGE habe ich vor vielen, vielen Jahren mit ihrer damals aktuellen Scheibe „The Missing Link“ kennengelernt. Seitdem verfolge ich die Band eher unregelmäßig. Es kommt halt immer drauf an, welche Musik bei mir grad überwiegend läuft. „The Missing Link“ höre ich immer noch gerne und „End Of All Days“ ist meine Lieblingsscheibe der Band, da ich Sound und Melodien einfach großartig finde. Dann gab es eine längere RAGEpause bei mir, was vor allem mit ihren orchestralen Ausflügen zu tun hatte, sowie damit, dass ich musikalisch anderweitig unterwegs war. Die erste Platte die mich dann wieder richtig umgehauen hat, war ihr Album „Wings Of Rage“ von 2020 (Review hier). Der Nachfolger rauschte dann wieder an mir vorbei, obwohl er im Nachgang doch ganz gut gelungen war.
Jetzt liegt mit „Afterlifelines“ sage und schreibe Album Nummer 25(!) vor und wenn man es genau nimmt eigentlich auch Album 26, da es sich bei der aktuellen Veröffentlichung um ein Doppelalbum handelt, womit wohl dem 40. Geburtstag der Band Rechnung getragen wird.
Album 1, betitelt „Afterlife“ ist metallisch geprägt, Album 2, namens „Lifelines“ ist wieder ein Ausflug ins klassisch/orchestrale, hat aber trotzdem eine ganze Menge Metal zu bieten, ist quasi ein Metalalbum mit klassischer Unterstützung.
Das Ganze startet mit einem 1,5minütigen Intro, welches auf Akustikgitarre mit Streicheruntermalung und späterer Klavierunterstützung ruhig verläuft.
Es führt auch ein wenig in die Irre, denn „End Of Illusions“ legt die metallische Latte dann gleich recht hoch an. Doublebassgewitter, ein „Breakdown“, Anleihen aus dem Hardcore, Akzente durch Growls im Haupt- und Backgesang. Dazu ein fetter Sound, den ich so bei RAGE glaube ich noch nicht vernommen habe. Bei „Under A Black Crown“ wird der Bogen sogar noch etwas weiter gespannt und es kommt sogar ein kurzer „echter“ Breakdown zum Tragen, der mit elektronischer Unterstützung eines Subkick Druck aufbaut und auch bei einer Metalcoreband hätte vorkommen können.
Der Sound ist recht bassig ausgefallen, wobei die Höhen auf keinen Fall zu kurz kommen. Die Gitarren haben einige abbekommen und die Becken der Drums zischen auch ganz gut und gehen nie unter. Die Gitarren haben auch einiges an Druck und klingen sehr frisch, vor allem in den Leads.
„Dead Man´s Eyes“ besticht mit einem Refrain, in dem Peavy stimmlich weiter unten bleibt.
Beim Intro von „Mortal“ hört man den fetten Basssound, der sonst nicht so zu vernehmen ist.
Bei „Toxic Waves“ beginnt die Leadgitarre sehr heavymetallastig, wobei die Rhythmusgitarre sehr modern daherkommt. Kopfnicken wird erzwungen, wobei der Rest des Songs mich nicht so packt.
„Waterwar“ ist in der Strophe recht thrashig und hat einen guten Refrain.
„Life Among Ruins“ schließt die erste Scheibe mit ungewöhnlichen Melodieläufen ab, cooler Song!
Wenn wir dann rübergehen zum „Album“ „Lifelines“, muss ich zugeben, dass mir das mehr schmeckt, als die Scheiben, bei denen sie den klassischen Aspekt weiter in den Vordergrund gerückt haben. Man könnte hier sogar sagen, dass die Songs der Scheibe auch komplett ohne orchestrale Unterstützung so funktionieren würde, wie die Band sie eingespielt hat.
Die Streicher und Bläser bei „Root Of Our Evil“ z.B. passen zwar, wirken auf mich aber so, als wenn der Song metallisch schon komplett fertig war und dann der Rest, passend dazu, fertiggestellt wurde. Geht so!
„It´s All Too Much“ ist ein fetter Track, mit geilen Melodien, den ich lieber auf der ersten Scheibe gehabt hätte, denn er wäre mir persönlich wesentlich schmackhafter ohne das Orchester. Wobei die letzte Minute, in der ein Klavier und Streicher alleine zu hören sind, sehr gut klingt. Bei mir ist es halt eher die Mischung von Klassik und Metal.
„Dying To Live“ und das mit über 10 Minuten recht massive Titelstück der zweiten Scheibe sind dann eher im balladesken Bereich einzuordnen. Und eher ruhig geht die Scheibe dann auch zu Ende.
Zusammenfassend würde ich sagen, mit fast eineinhalb Stunden ein massives Werk, was dem 40. Geburtstag der Band gerecht wird.
Ich persönlich kann mit der 2. Hälfte des Doppelalbums eher weniger anfangen, wie schon beschrieben, finde es aber völlig angebracht auf so einer Scheibe diesen Weg auch zu gehen.
Man kann halt nicht JEDEN IMMER glücklich machen.

Die 1. Hälfte des Albums ist absolut gelungen und bringt für mich wieder neue Seiten von RAGE zutage. Im Ganzen nicht meine liebste Scheibe der Jungs, bei so einem Backkatalog, kann das aber auch nicht immer die aktuelle Veröffentlichung sein.

Out via Accession Records on April 26 is the brand new Diary Of Dreams album “Under a timeless Spell”. “Under a timeless Spell” was recorded with a full philharmonic orchestra and offers 9 classic Diary of Dreams tracks in a completely new acoustic guise, realized with the Leipzig Philharmonic.

The album will be out on CD and also as a white and black splatters vinyl in a limited and numbered edition of 1000 copies. The CD comes in a first edition fold-out digipak.

Das ROCKHARZ OPEN AIR geht in eine neue Runde: Stattfinden wird die kommende Auflage des Festivals vom 3. bis 6. Juli 2023 in Ballenstedt.

Mittlerweile ist das Festival bereits ausverkauft. Für den Vorverkauf hatten die Veranstalter ursprünglich einen 14-tägigen Zeitraum für Frühbucher:innen einberaumt, wobei die ersten sieben Tage ausschließlich für Bestandskunden des festivaleigenen Shops reserviert waren.

Eine finale Bandwelle aus sechs Bestätigungen komplettiert nun das diesjährige Line-up. Auftreten werden DYNAZTY, NANOWAR OF STEEL, MASSIVE WAGONS, VAN CANTO, AVATARIUM sowie LEAGUE OF DISTORTION.

Zudem steht seit Dezember ein weiterer Headliner fest: JUDAS PRIEST spielen 2024 auf dem ROCKHARZ-Festival. Die portugiesische Domm Metal-Band SINISTRO hat einen Plattenvertrag bei Alma Mater Records unterschrieben, das neue Album “Vértice” soll im September 2024 erscheinen.

Mit einem Video zu “Pontas Soltas” haben SINISTRO nun den ersten der neuen Songs im Netz geteilt, die Band beschreibt den Track so:

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Karl Wallinger, whose roots were deeply entrenched in the verdant landscapes of Wales, rose to prominence as the charismatic leader of World Party and as an erstwhile collaborator with The Waterboys. Sadly, he has departed from this mortal coil at 66 years old, as confirmed by his publicist. No official cause of death has yet been given.

“Karl leaves behind a loving family including wife Suzie Zamit, son Louis Wallinger, daughter Nancy Zamit and two grandchildren. The family invites Karl’s friends and fans to share their thoughts on his Facebook page or Instagram.”

Born in Prestatyn, Wales, in October 1957, Wallinger’s formative years unfolded within the storied walls of Charterhouse, an esteemed English boarding school renowned for nurturing the talents of the original Genesis. Although their paths at Charterhouse never crossed, Wallinger would later collaborate with Peter Gabriel’s Big Blue Ball project.

Wallinger dipped his toes in the water with his first band, Pax, which later evolved into Quasimodo and included future members of The Alarm, Dave Sharp and Nigel Twist. However, it was his role as a keyboardist for The Waterboys where he truly found his first brush with success. Contributing to the albums ‘A Pagan Place‘ (1984) and ‘This Is the Sea’ (1985), Wallinger played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s sound. His creative influence extended to arranging the music for iconic tracks such as ‘The Whole Of The Moon‘ and earning a writing credit for ‘Don’t Bang the Drum.’

“Having Karl in the studio was like having a one-man orchestra around. There might have been a This Is the Sea without him, but it wouldn’t have been the same – or as good,” Mike Scott of the Waterboys once commented.

In 1986, Wallinger, following his parting from the Waterboys, sowed the seeds of World Party. The endeavor was a solitary pilgrimage at its inception, with Wallinger ensconcing himself within the confines of his abode to forge the group’s inaugural album, Private Revolution. The album emerged as an unexpected beacon of success, heralded by the anthem Ship of Fools.

The ensemble, buoyed by this triumph, embarked upon a journey of artistic creation and public performances, bequeathing to the world a total of four additional albums by the turn of the millennium. Their odyssey was punctuated with memorable harmonies such as Put The Message In the Box and, arguably his greatest masterpiece, Is It Like Today?

Wallinger, an avid Beatles fan, was also no stranger to side projects: he collaborated with Sinead O’Connor on her debut album The Lion and The Cobra, and  1990’s Goodbye Jumbo garnered widespread acclaim. He spent some time as a musical director for a stage production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Hollywood also came calling for a time, as Karl Wallinger became musical director for Reality Bites, and contributed to the soundtrack of Clueless with a cover of Mott The Hoople’s All The Young Dudes.

Wallinger’s arduous recovery from a 2001 aneurysm required tseveral years of rehabilitation in order for him to re-learn to speak and play instruments. World Party later embarked on extensive tours, yet during this period, new albums were notably absent from their repertoire. Nevertheless, in a 2022 interview, Wallinger sparked anticipation by promising fresh material on the horizon.

“It’s good to write songs about stuff that people think about, that I thought about,’ Wallinger once told The Big Takeover. “It’s just a resonance with other people that you get from thinking about things that we’re all thinking about. You put in music, and it becomes a recognizable emotion, and people lock onto that. It’s strange, but amazing. I’ve always thought it should be something to do with healing or finding things out about the world that have truth. It maybe sounds a little idealistic, but it’s what music is about. It’s kind of a pure thing, music. I’m not left or right wing; I don’t even think of in terms of that. I just want people to have what they need to get through living on the planet.”

Former bandmate Mike Scott left a tribute to Wallinger on social media, calling him “one of the finest musicians I’ve ever known.”

Out on Friday via Other Voices is the newest Muslimgauze double vinyl “United States of Islam”. “United States of Islam” is the second part in a series of 4 double vinyl albums with bonus songs, previously released on CD between 1990 and 1994 on the Australian label Extreme Music.

The original tracks were remastered for this first time ever vinyl release. The new sleeve designs were created by Oleg Galay, who is famous for his artworks for many Muslimgauze reissues. All 4 album covers are made from extra heavy cardboard with deluxe spot UV finish and inside print. Parts 3 and 4 of this series will be released in May (“Zul’m”) and July (“Citadel”).

Muslimgauze was the main musical project of Bryn Jones (17 June 1961 – 14 January 1999), a British ethnic electronica and experimental musician who was influenced by conflicts and history in the Muslim world, often with an emphasis on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. With dozens of albums released under the Muslimgauze name, Jones was prolific, but he never achieved mainstream.

Am 17. Mai 2024 erscheint mit “Orgy of the Damned” das sechste Soloalbum von SLASH – der GUNS N ROSES-Gitarrist hat mit einigen Kollegen ein Bluesalbum aufgenommen. Mit dabei sind unter anderem Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Chris Stapleton, Beth Hart, Iggy Pop, Paul Rodgers, Gary Clark Jr, Billy F. Gibbons (ZZ TOP), Chris Robinson (THE BLACK CROWES), Demi Lovato, Dorothy und Tash Neal.

Als erste Single hat SLASH ein Video zu ‚Killing Floor‘ veröffentlicht, bei dem Song sind Brian Johnson als Sänger und Steven Tyler von AEROSMITH an der Mundharmonika  zu hören. Den Song hat sich SLASH aus bestimmten Gründen als erste Single ausgesucht:

 „‚Killing Floor‘ ist einer meiner Lieblingssongs von Howlin’ Wolf, aber auch eines der ikonischen Blues-Riffs, die mich als jungen Gitarristen begeistert haben. Ich wollte ihn schon immer in irgendeiner Form covern, und diese Platte war das perfekte Vehikel dafür. Aber es mit dieser Band und mit Brian Johnson als Sänger zu spielen, hätte ich mir nie  vorstellen können. Ganz zu schweigen von Steven Tyler an der Mundharmonika.“

Am 2. August 2024 erscheint das neue BLUES PILLS-Album “Birthady” via Throwdown Entertainment/BMG.

Ein Video zum Titelsong haben die Schweden schon jetzt veröffentlicht: “Birthday”-Video bei YouTube.  Zum Record Store Days wird die Single “Birthday” am 20. April in limitierter 12”-Vinyl-Auflage veröffentlicht.

Die Songs entstanden unter “anderen Umständen”, die Band berichtet:

“Für dieses Album haben wir alle Grenzen und Erwartungen hinter uns gelassen, und nur Musik geschreiben, die wir wirklich lieben. Wir wollten das unverfälschte und authentische Gefühl, das wir haben, wenn wir live spielen, auf einem Album einfangen. Gleichzeitig sollte es natürlich das beste Album werden, das wir je gemacht haben. Elin war während der Aufnahmen schwanger. Mehr Rock’n’Roll geht nicht, als gleichzeitig menschliches Leben und Musik zu erschaffen. “

Sängerin Elin ergänzt:

“Ich muss es für mich selbst und für andere Frauen tun. Wir dürfen unsere eigenen Leidenschaften nicht aufgeben,wenn wir Mutter geworden sind. Es wird dauern, bis ich die beiden Welten, die ich liebe, verbinden kann. Aber meinem Sohn Loui wird es gut tun, andere Kulturen, Länder und Musik kennenzulernen. Ich finde es wichtig, ich ihm das zu ermöglichen.”

“Birthday” ist das vierte BLUES PILLS-Album und entstand mit diesem Line-up: Elin Larsson (Vocals), Zack Anderson (Gitarre), André Kvarnström (Drums) und Kristoffer Schander (Bass).

Critical Mess und Cripper) kollaboriert mit den Berlinern. Auch ist es wohl mit der intensivste und persönlichste Track auf dem neuen Album „Death Obsessed“, das am 21.03.2024 erscheint. Noch bis in die Mitte der 80er wurden Kinder in Deutschland innerhalb ihrer erste zwei Lebensjahre ohne Schmerzbehandlung, sprich Narkose, operiert. Kinder, die völlig gesund, aber eine Variante der Geschlechtsentwicklung (Intergeschlechtliche Menschen) aufwiesen, wurden damals, wie heute mit enormen medizinischen Aufwand, oft unaufgeklärt, operativ an die körperliche Geschlechter-Norm angeglichen. Ungehört und Ungeachtet sind die dramatisch physischen und psychischen Konsequenzen der Betroffenen. Mediziner hingegen positionieren sich als „Helfer“ und „Retter“, obwohl die meisten Behandelten schwer unter den Folgen leiden. Das Phänomen der körperlichen Realität und Existenz von Intergeschlechtlichkeit in unserer Gesellschaft wird auch durch diese Eingriffe weitgehend unsichtbar gemacht.

Lynn: „I have never written a more explicit song about my deepest wound: sui*idal feelings and medical surgeries backstory. But I could not help it. I had to write it down and scream it! Right from the soul! It was so intense. One morning under the shower, I had this insane idea about a duet with Britta. Britta and I worked together on my vocals at that time. And I remember, I came out of the shower and asked right away! And Britta said YESSSSS ahahah, the track became more epic and more powerful than I could have ever imagined.“

Sun Atoms honor Leonard Cohen ‘Tower of Song’ (in the key of JAMC)’ & announce tour dates…

Portland alternative pop / postmodern rock outfit Sun Atoms presents a unique fuzzed-out tribute to iconic songwriter Leonard Cohen with ‘Tower of Song (in the key of JAMC)’, released as the flipside of their new ‘Ceiling Tiles’ single.

Released via Little Cloud Records digitally and on 7″ vinyl and mixed by the iconic Jagz Kooner (Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Oasis, Garbage), this single is the first taste of the band’s sophomore album (out ths summer). The accompanying video, produced by Bradley Tuazon, follows ghosts on a velvety caper through an endless maze through streets and a 113,000+ square foot state-of-the-art concert venue, the band members appearing like rare birds in the roles of madcap non-conformist odd fellows living outside of the lines.

Sun Atoms is made up of bassist Peter G. Holmström (The Dandy Warhols, Pete International Airport), vocalist Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), multi-instrumentalist June Kang, Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), L.A. drummer Eric Rubalcava and Boise native Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez (Hi Hazel). 

2021 brought the band’s debut album ‘Let There Be Light’, also produced by Holmström and mixed by the iconic Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, The Cranberries), involving performances by the likes of The Vandelles’ Jasno Swarez, The Black Angels’ Alex Maas and Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, Blitzen Trapper).

“When I was a child, I saw a being made of light climb through my bedroom window, they stood at the foot of my bed and reached out to touch my foot,” explains Jsun Atoms. “Mesmerizing and haunting, much like the new Sun Atoms single ‘Ceiling Tiles’, which reveals a story of characters living under a faux sky being manipulated to make it appear that the stars are aligning, when in fact, above this tiled Truman Show, the stars are doing just that. The characters in the song go about their day-to-day dance while the globe they are spinning on becomes an eye.”

Sun Atoms kicked off 2024 by playing three sold-out shows at Portland’s historic Revolution Hall, opening for Dinosaur Jr., which presented the perfect chance to shoot their new video. With its long stairways and iconic brick facade as the ideal backdrop for this monochromatic video, here unfolds a mysterious tale of characters living between worlds and connected by Jean Cocteau’s famously mirrored portal.

Sun Atoms has also played shows with Modest Mouse, Fishbone, Besnard Lakes, The Veldt and New Candys, as well as performing at Seattle’s Freakout Fest and Portland’s Lose Yr Mind Fest with Allah Las, Broncho and Night Beats. 

The ‘Ceiling Tiles’ single is available on beautiful 7″ vinyl and from fine digital platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. Sun Atoms are touring the West Coast in March-April, kicking off with Treefort Festival, where they join Ty Segall, A Place To Bury Strangers, Neko Case and Built To Spill. Man sieht es ihr nicht an, aber die Stachelkugel auf dem Frontcover ist eigentlich als lebensbejahendes Sinnbild gedacht. Eben solche hingen in einem europäischen Underground-Schuppen von der Decke, als es BLIND CHANNEL wie Schuppen von den Augen viel. Einfach loslassen, alles vergessen, den Emotionen Luft verschaffen: Das geht in dieser Form nur an einem Ort wie diesem. Stickig, voll und ein wenig von der Außenwelt abgeschottet – eine Schablone, welche die Finnen für sich selbst adaptieren wollten.

Die Marschrichtung ist somit klar vorgegeben: Ehrlich, vielleicht sogar ein bisschen kantig darf es anno 2024 sein; energiegeladen sowieso. Und am Ende muss es natürlich auch live funktionieren. Eine zielstrebige Vision, welche den Finnen aber hörbar guttut. Nach dem aalglatten Vorgänger „Lifestyles Of The Sick & Dangerous“ (2022) findet „Exit Emotions“ einen deutlich interessanteren Zugang zum modernen Nu Metal des Sextetts, indem sich BLIND CHANNEL stilistisch mehr trauen und auch mal die Ellenbogen ausfahren.

BLIND CHANNEL erfinden sich nicht neu, justieren aber an den feinen Stellschrauben nach
Bevor „Deadzone“ mit eingängigem Refrain die Metal-Discos dieser Welt ins Visier nimmt, hat uns der Opener „Where’s The Exit“ mittels aggressiver Spitzen bereits erfolgreich eingenordet. Dass sich BLIND CHANNEL auf „Exit Emotions“ gar nicht neu erfinden, sondern nur mit größerem Selbstvertrauen an den feinen Stellschrauben nachjustieren müssen, ist Beleg für das Potenzial, das den Nordeuropäern innewohnt.

Gerade deshalb ist es bedauerlich, dass sich die Band im Gegenzug nicht von etablierten Songschemata lösen will. Jenseits der drei Minuten agiert man nur im finalen „One Last Time…Again“, ansonsten bleibt man dem kompakten Strophe-Refrain-Strophe-Rezept treu. Hier ein Breakdown, da etwas Sprechgesang („Wolves In California“) und schon ist die Kreativität – zumindest in dieser Hinsicht – erschöpft.

Immerhin: Schnell ins Ohr geht „Exit Emotions“ in jedem Fall, egal ob BLIND CHANNEL in „Keeping It Surreal“ Pop-Appeal mit dezentem Emo-Anstrich vermengen oder im tanzbaren „Flatline“ vorsichtig mit Hardstyle-Sprenklern hantieren. Gefühlvoll wird es in der Ballade „Die Another Die“ mit Gastsängerin RØRY, wo gar eine Prise BRING ME THE HORIZON mitzuschwingen scheint, bevor „Phobia“ sowie „Red Tail Lights“ einen Schlenker in catchy Alt-Rock-Gefilde wagen. „Not Your Bro“ schließlich justiert die Härteschraube mittels aggressiver Screams und tief gestimmter Gitarren in Richtung Metal nach.

In seiner Gesamtheit mag das alles weder bahnbrechende Erkenntnisse liefern noch das Genre neu definieren. Für BLIND CHANNEL jedoch ist „Exit Emotions“ ein deutlicher Schritt nach vorne, welcher das Repertoire der Band in vollem Umfang ausschöpft. Für die Stachelkugeln an der Hallendecke können wir zwar dennoch nicht garantieren, ihrer Vision und Inspirationsquelle dürfte die Formation mit dieser Platte aber auch auf der Bühne ein ganzes Stück näherkommen.

FRIENDS OF HELL sind mit neuem Line-up wieder da und veröffentlichen ein neues Album: “God Damned You To Hell” erscheint am 5. April 2024 via Rise Above Records.

Gegründet wurde die Band 2021 von Tas Danazoglou (SATAN’S WRATH/ex-ELECTRIC WIZARD), damals gehörte auch Albert Witchfinder (OPIUM WARLORDS/ex-REVEREND BIZARRE) zur Besetzung. 2022 erschien das Debüt “Friends Of Hell”.

Tas Danazoglou ist überzeugt von der neuen Platte und stellt das neue Line-up vor:

“Das zweite Album ist viel besser als das erste. Die Songs sind besser, und die Musik ist härter und böser! Das war von Anfang an der Plan. Die einzige Überraschung war, dass sich das Line-up geändert hat. Hellbutchers Gesang ist einfach umwerfend und Beelzeebubth und Sprits sind einfach fantastische Gitarristen! Der größte Teil der Aufnahmen fand hier in Zypern statt, wobei Sprits das Ruder der Produktion übernahm. Diesmal waren die Dinge einfacher als beim ersten Album. Wir waren konzentrierter und gewillt, schwacher und falscher Metal-Musik einen vernichtenden Schlag zu versetzen!”

Die Progressive Death Metal-Band OMNIVIDE hat mit “A Tale of Fire” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der Kanadier, die zum Großteil auch beim OPETH Tribute-Projekt SUNBIRD mitgewirkt haben. Erscheinen wird das Album am 22. März 2024. Mit “Cosmic Convergence” gibt es nun ein weiteres Lyric-Video.

“Im Lied geht es um den Big Crunch, das Gegenteil des Urknalls, bei dem Astrophysiker vorhersagen, dass das Universum aufhören wird, sich auszudehnen und stattdessen zu einem einzigen, unendlich kleinen und dichten Punkt aus Materie zusammenfällt”, erklärt die Band

Vor wenigen Wochen ist mit “Opulence” eine zweite Vorab-Single erschienen. Der Song sei eine Metapher dafür, dass der Mensch ein Vielfraß ist, der sich ohne Selbstbeherrschung und ohne Rücksicht auf den Planeten ein Stück der Erde nimmt, und dass sich die Erde von einem fruchtbaren Boden für menschliches Leben zu einem aktiven Versuch entwickelt, eine Spezies auszurotten, die im Grunde zu einem Parasiten geworden ist.

Zuvor gab es mit “Holy Killer” ein Lyric-Video.

“Dieser Song wurde früh im Entstehungsprozess des Albums geschrieben und war einer der Songs, die uns geholfen haben, unseren Sound zu definieren”, erklärt die Band. “Der Song erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes, der zu Lebzeiten im Namen der Götter, die er anbetet, schreckliche Taten vollbracht hat und sich im Jenseits einen Platz unter diesen Göttern erhofft.”
