Die Doom Metal-Band THE OBSESSED hat nach dem Lyric-Video zu “It’s Not OK” mit “Stoned Back to the Bomb Age” einen Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Gilded Sorrow” veröffentlicht.

“Es gab eine Zeit, in der ich sehr viel Radio hörte, um mich von einem extrem alltäglichen Leben abzulenken. George W. Bush war Präsident und die USA hatten den Krieg in Afghanistan begonnen. Eines Tages hörte ich den stellvertretenden Verteidigungsminister Armitage sagen: “Wenn Pakistan da mitmacht, werden wir es in die Steinzeit zurückbomben.” Ich war geschockt von der gefühllosen Brutalität dieser Aussage, und wir entwarfen “Stoned Back to the Bomb Age” als ein direktes “Fukk you” an diese unmenschlichen Kriegsschweine und die anderen nicht gewählten Schweine, die die Welt regieren und den Untergang der Menschheit planen”, erklärt Scott “Wino” Weinrich.

“Gilded Sorrow”, das von Frank Marchand produziert wurde, ist das fünfte Studioalbum der US-Amerikaner aus Maryland und ist am 16. Februar 2024 via Ripple Music erschienen. Es ist das erste Album mit dem Bassisten Chris Angleberger und dem Gitarristen Jason Taylor (Ex-SIERRA).

“Jason Taylor als zweiten Gitarristen hinzuzufügen war eine der besten Entscheidungen, die ich getroffen habe, denn er ist ein virtuoser Gitarrist und ich muss sagen, dass er ziemlich viel Gutes zu dieser Platte beigetragen hat”, lobt Bandgründer Scott “Wino” Weinrich (WINO, Ex-SAINT VITUS).

Die Thrash Metal-Band SYLOSIS hat mit “Poison For The Lost” ein neues Live-Video bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Aufgezeichnet wurde der Mitschnitt während der vergangenen Tour mit MALEVOLENCE in London.

Auch der Track “Absent” ist als Videoclip bei YouTube verfügbar. Entnommen ist das Stück wie der Clip “Descent” dem aktuellen Album “A Sign Of Things To Come” (2023). Eine Remix-Version des Tracks von ZETRA ist darüber hinaus auf den gängigen Streaming-Plattformen abrufbar.

Außerdem stellte die Formation den Titeltrack mit einem Video bei YouTube vor. “A Sign Of Things To Come” ist die dritte Single, zuvor teilten SYLOSIS ein Musikvideo zu “Poison For The Lost” bei YouTube  sowie einen Clip zu “Deadwood”.

Produziert wurde die neue Platte von Bandkopf Josh Middleton (ex-ARCHITECTS) zusammen mit Scott Atkins. Die Kooperation beschreibt der Gitarrist und Sänger wie folgt:

“Es ist das erste Mal, dass ich mich selbst produzieren lasse; ich habe brutale Kritik auf mich genommen und mich dazu gedrängt, die beste Gesangsleistung meiner Karriere abzuliefern. Ich bin ein großer Fan von progressiven und langen Alben, aber ich war während des gesamten Prozesses rücksichtslos zu mir selbst. Ich denke, das zeigt sich im Endergebnis der Platte!”

Die norwegische Gothic / Industrial-Band GOTHMINISTER hat mit “Pandemonium II: The Battle Of The Underworlds” ein neues Album angekündigt. Der “Pandemonium“-Nachfolger wird am 3. Mai 2024 via AFM Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital erscheinen. Ein Musikvideo zu “One Dark Happy Nation” gewährt jetzt einen weiteren Einblick in die fertige Platte.

Vorab gibt es mit “We Come Alive” außerdem eine weitere Single in Bild und Ton bei YouTube. Mit dem Stück traten GOTHMINISTER zudem am 13. Januar 2024 bei norwegischen Vorentscheid für den Eurovision Songcontest an, konnten sich im Finale aber nicht durchsetzen.

Die Druid Metal-Band UNSHINE hat mit “Maa Jälkeen Ihmisen” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Karn of Burnings” veröffentlicht. Es ist das fünfte Album der Finnen und folgt dem 2018er-Album “Astrala” nach.

“Karn of Burnings”, das eine Reise in die Gefilde vormoderner menschlicher Existenz und posthumaner Metaphern sei, wird am 22. März 2024 via Rockshots Records erscheinen. Vorab gab es Ende des Vorjahres mit “Hjul” schon einen Video-Clip.

Zwar versuchen wir uns in aller Regel von unangenehmen Situationen fernzuhalten, manchmal können aber selbst wir nicht anders. Wenn COMEBACK KID für Unruhe stiften, knacken unweigerlich die Knochen, immerhin haben die Kanadier seit über zwei Dekaden im Geschäft nichts von ihrem Feuer eingebüßt.

Das spüren wir auf „Trouble“ gleich in vierfacher Ausfertigung, was dank der kraftvollen und angenehm trockenen Produktion authentisch genug klingt, um uns gedanklich zurück in den Moshpit der letzten Tour zu werfen. Nur das Songmaterial ist diesmal ein anderes: COMEBACK KID halten keineswegs zurück, indem sie direkt zum Auftakt mit „Trouble In The Winners Circle“ einen kleinen Melodic-Hardcore-Hit aus dem Ärmel schütteln. Shouter Andrew Neufeld findet das perfekte Gleichgewicht aus Rotzigkeit und einprägsamen Hooks, während seine Kollegen hier und im rohen „Disruption“ eine ordentliche Prise Hardcore-Punk einfließen lassen.

Das ist auch richtig so, denn Verschnaufpausen brauchen wir in den kurzweiligen zwölfeinhalb Minuten sicherlich nicht. Vielmehr wollen wir an der Seite des Quintetts mit dem Kopf durch die Wand, bevor wir im unverkrampften „Chompin‘ At The Bit“ Neufeld am liebsten das Mikro aus der Hand reißen würden, um dann zur Lead-Gitarre des abschließenden „Breaking And Bruised“ doch das Tanzbein zu schwingen.

Kurzum, COMEBACK KID sprechen mit „Trouble“ von Ärger, meinen aber eigentlich eine riesengroße Party. Natürlich mit stattlichem Pit, 2-Step und verschwitzten Leibern – nur auf dem Papier eine unangenehme Situation, für die wir unseren eingangs dargelegten Vorsatz gerne mal sausen lassen.

Der Titel von PERCHTAs zweitem Album "D'Muata" heißt aus dem österreichischen Dialekt von Frontfrau Frau Percht ins Deutsche übertragen "Die Mutter". Der Name ist Programm, denn die Sängerin und ihre Band haben im Kontext ihres folkloristisch geprägten Black Metal ein feministisches Manifest geschaffen. Das Feminine in all seinen Facetten fristet in diesem Genre meist ein Nischendasein – und das, obwohl es ein untrennbarer Bestandteil sowohl des Menschen als auch der natürlichen Welt auf diesem Planeten ist. PERCHTA haben sich 2017 im Jahr ihrer Gründung in Tirol, Österreich nach einer von der älteren Forschung rekonstruierten heidnischen Göttin benannt. Von Anfang an beabsichtigte Frau Percht mit ihrer Musik regionale Traditionen zu bewahren und zu verjüngen. Drei Jahre später erschien das Debütalbum "Ufång" (2020), mit dem sich PERCHTA schnell einen Ruf als höchst individualistische und einzigartige Band erwarben. Dazu gehört, dass die Texte von "Ufång" in der Tiroler Mundart intoniert werden. Dies geschieht mit einem extremen, durch Mark und Bein gehenden Gesang, der in einen Sturm aus Gitarren-Tremolos und ritualistisch interpretierter Folklore eingebettet ist. Nach der globalen Zwangspause machten PERCHTA auch durch ihre faszinierenden Live-Auftritte auf sich aufmerksam. Durch die Konzerte trat der Charakter als Band stärker hervor. Jetzt kehren die schwarze Hexe der Tiroler Berge und ihre Gesellen mit einem magischen neuen Album zurück, das PERCHTA auch zurück auf die Bühne bringen wird!

Goth pop act Metamorph has a new album out, “Hex”. “Hex” is out via Distortion Productions and comes with the video for the title track.

Thematically the album handles love, personal empowerment and the hidden secrets of sacred geometry. Margot Day adds: “‘Hex’ is like a lover slowly undressing, revealing the secrets of the universe encoded in melodies, seducing you to unlock the enchanting mysteries of your being.”

“Hex” was produced by the band and Cleopatra recording artist, Erik Gustafson. The album is available on CD and on all digital platforms via Distortion Productions. Also included on the album are remixes by Grendel (“Veridia”) and Moris Blak and Assemblage 23 who tackled “Woo Woo”.

The New Orleans-based industrial band Livernois recently launched their new EP, “:ablation:”. Thematically the EP wrestles with the human reaction to trauma. And the band adds: “More specifically, the EP addresses the responses that tend to be stigmatized and shunned by an increasingly repressed, and emotionally-paralyzed state.”

Formed in New Orleans in 2022, the members of Livernois come from different backgrounds, and musically they embrace quite a rich version of industrial. A band that should get signed quite fast.

“:ablation:” is available on all major digital platforms including Bandcamp and Spotify and is the 2nd release for the band which launched the 2-track single “Tearcatcher” in June 2023. Both these tracks are also included in the new EP.

Das RAGNARÖK FESTIVAL geht auch 2024 wieder in eine neue Runde: Stattfinden wird das Event vom 4. bis 6. April 2024 in der Stadthalle in Lichtenfels. Tickets gibt es derzeit für 110,-€  über die offizielle Festivalhomepage.

Anfang März 2024 gab es nun nochmals einen Wechsel im Line-up: VERMILIA ersetzen FIRN, die dieses Jahr doch nicht teilnehmen werden. Mit dieser Änderung im Line-up steht nun auch die Running Order (s. unten).

Auftreten werden auch WALDGEFLÜSTER, die zuvor als 32. Band das Line-up komplettierten. Ebenfalls mit dabei: ORIGIN, MARDUK, FEN, GASBRAND, THEOTOXIN. NORDJEVEL, THE VISION BLEAK, VARG, IMPERIUM DEKADENZ, HERETOIR,  ULTAR sowie ROBSE, das neue Projekt des ehemaligen EQUILIBRIUM-Frontmanns Robse. VREDEHAMMER mussten ihre Teilnahme zuvor leider absagen.

Darüber hinaus wurde mit FINNTROLL der erste Headliner des Festivals enthüllt. Außerdem mit dabei: NON EST DEUS, KANONENFIEBER, ISTAPP, VANAHEIM sowie GRIMA.

Zuvor haben die Veranstalter die ersten Bands verraten, die für die kommende Ausgabe gebucht wurden: Neben KAMPFAR treten zudem WINTERFYLLETH, CRUACHAN, PERCHTA, HORN, PRIMORDIAL, ELLEREVE sowie SAOR auf, wobei letztere eine “Special ‘Aura’ Show” geplant haben.

With the Long Beach, California-based synth punk duo Intrusive Pinky, Les Disques De La Pantoufle announces its vey first signing. Out on April 5 is the duo’s “I Hate You, Patriarch Fuck!” EP.

Les Disques De La Pantoufle is a partnership between Jean-Marc Lederman and Christian Petke’s COP International label.

Christian Petke explains the collaboration as follows: “Running an indie label has always been a labor of love, especially in today’s challenging environment. Now, more than ever, we need individuals willing to support and nurture artists. It is with immense pride that we unveil Jean-Marc Lederman’s venture into the world of boutique labels with Les Disques De La Pantoufle. Few individuals are as well-equipped for this endeavor as Jean-Marc Lederman, who has dedicated a lifetime to the music industry. He collaborated with some of the most iconic figures in electronic music history: Fad Gadget, The The, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Weathermen, Front 242, Karl Bartos, Rohn – Lederman and many more. His extensive experience provides him with an intimate understanding of the intricacies of our industry, having navigated both sides of the table.”

Cop International will provide A&R and logistical support to the new label.

Jean-Marc Lederman adds: “I’m very happy Christian has understood my need to be able to release my works sooner than it could on a label with more acts and Les Disques De La Pantoufle being partnered with COP will provide me with the guerilla-label tactics that could work well with my relentless schedule. We have a busy year ahead as we are releasing “Intrusive Pinky” in April the brand new Rohn-Lederman double CD album “Black And Bleu” in May and, who knows, some exciting bands whose songs I love so much that LDP will release them within weeks.”

(Photo by Mike Formanski) Moby announces his return to live performances after a hiatus of over 10 years. He will embark on a short European tour in September 2024 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his album “Play” and perform his greatest hits. Moby has committed 100% of his tour profits to benefit European animal rights organizations.

The tour will include performances in major European cities such as London, Berlin, and Paris. General ticket sales for the tour will start on March 22 at 10 AM GMT.

Alongside the tour announcement, Moby has shared a new single and official video titled “Dark Days”, featuring American jazz singer-songwriter Lady Blackbird, which is available now.

Die Heavy Rock / Grunge / Post-Metal-Band ABRAMS hat einen Labeldeal bei Blues Funeral Recordings unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die US-Amerikaner aus Denver ihr neues Album “Blue City” veröffentlichen.

“Die Songs auf ‘Blue City’ handeln von dem Gefühl, an einem Ort der Bequemlichkeit und Normalität gefangen zu sein”, erklärt Sänger Zachary Amster. “Wir würden am liebsten alles zusammenpacken und etwas Neues ausprobieren, aber die Angst vor Veränderungen hält uns zurück und lässt uns in der sogenannten Routine verharren. Die ‘Blue City’ ist eine Metapher, denn sie ist ein kalter, aber vertrauter Ort, der uns von jeder drastischen neuen Erfahrung abhält. Eine Bequemlichkeit im Vertrauten, eine Angst vor dem Unbekannten.”

“Blue City” ist das fünfte Album der 2013 gegründeten Band und wurde von Dave Otero produziert. Release-Termin ist der 24. Mai 2024. Vorab gibt es zu “Fire Waltz” einen Video-Clip.

Die Modern Metal-Band MISTER MISERY hat ihr drittes Studioalbum angekündigt. Die selbstbetitelte Platte erscheint demnach am 2. August 2024 via AFM Records. Eine weitere Single steht nun in Form von “Erzsébet (The Countess)” auf allen gängigen Streaming-Plattformen bereit.

Einen Clip zur Single “Survival Of The Sickest” kann man sich außerdem bei YouTube ansehen.

Darüber hinaus kommt die Formation im Oktober 2024 auf Europatour. Auf dem Programm stehen dabei auch Shows in Berlin, Leipzig, Obertraubling, Tübingen, Aarau (CH), Neunkirchen, Frankfurt, Bochum sowie Hamburg (Termine s. unten).

Die Symphonic Metal-Band KAMELOT veröffentlichte am 17. März 2023 ihr Album “The Awakening”. Es handelt sich dabei seit der ersten Studioplatte seit fünf Jahren – Gitarrist Thomas Youngblood erklärt dazu:

“Mit The Awakening haben wir eines unserer vielfältigsten Alben seit Jahren aufgenommen. Die Alternative Metal-Band A KILLER’S CONFESSION präsentiert ihre neue Single “Greed” mit einem Musikvideo bei YouTube. Inhaltlich dreht sich das Stück um die titelgebende Todsünde “Gier”. Sänger Waylon Reavis erklärt:

“Ich spreche nicht zu irgendeinem Opfer. Es ist eher eine Warnung. Soziale Medien sind allumfassend. Die Leute werden gierig und gieren nach Aufmerksamkeit. Abgesehen von der Band versuche ich, mich von den sozialen Medien so weit wie möglich fernzuhalten. Jeder prahlt mit dem, was er hat, und die Follower oder “Freunde” richten ihr Leben nach diesem Wettrennen aus. Lass dich davon nicht beeinflussen. Man kann nichts von diesen materiellen Dingen mitnehmen. Ich persönlich werde nicht zulassen, dass es mich umbringt.”

“Greed” ist der erste Vorgeschmack auf ein noch unbetiteltes Studioalbum, das über MNRK Heavy erscheinen soll.

Background/Info: Alone In The Hollow Garden & Nam-Khar renewed their collaboration with this album released at the end of 2023 and featuring five tracks.

Content: We’re visiting an elaborated dark sound universe bringing different but related genres together. This is a sonic offspring between Tribal, Ritual and Dark-Ambient with extra Industrial percussion on top.

+ + + : I like the work for its diversity but still delicacy in the writing process. Both artists have used different authentic instruments injecting a true spirit to their work. They create a ghost-like atmosphere which is reinforced by tribal elements like a few chants but especially the rhythmic has an hypnotic sensation.

– – – : I regret that there are no more chants, except for the last cut featured.

Conclusion: Alone In The Hollow Garden & Nam-Khar are much more than collaborative artists; there’s a true chemistry between both resulting in a great work.

Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Bestehens der berühmtesten Vier aus Birmingham werden die "Erfinder" des Heavy Metal von dem prominent besetzten Tribute-Trio um Gitarrist und Sänger Zakk Wylde mit dem Doppelalbum "Doomed Forever Forever Doomed" erneut geehrt. Mit dieser liebevollen Hommage liefern die Amerikaner brillante Interpretationen von BLACK SABBATHs zweitem und drittem Album ab, also die klassischen Heavy Metal-Meisterwerken "Paranoid" (1970) und "Master of Reality" (1971). ZAKK SABBATH wurden von BLACK LABEL SOCIETY-Gitarrist und Sänger Zakk Wylde gegründet, der auch als langjähriger Lead-Gitarrist von OZZY OSBOURNE und inzwischen auch noch von PANTERA bekannt ist. Nachdem ZAKK SABBATH anfangs mit wechselnden Mitgliedern nur live auftraten, fand die Band schließlich mit dem OZZY OSBOURNE- und ROB ZOMBIE-Bassisten Blasko und Joey Castillo am Schlagzeug (DANZIG, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE) eine stabile Besetzung. Inspiriert durch das 50-jährige Jubiläum von BLACK SABBATHs selbstbetitelten Debütalbum, veröffentlichten ZAKK SABBATH im Jahr 2020 eine Hommage an diesen monumentalen Heavy Metal-Meilenstein unter dem Titel "Vertigo". Das Album wurde von Kritikern und Fans gleichermaßen mit Lob überhäuft. Das Trio feierte einen weltweiten Erfolg, der sich in beeindruckenden Platzierungen in diversen Charts widerspiegelt: Das Album stieg auf Platz 5 in den US Hard Music Charts, Platz 7 in den Current Rock Albums Charts und Platz 27 in den Billboard Top Album Charts ein. In Frankreich gelang sogar ein Platz 1 in den Metal Album Charts und neben einem Platz 3 in den deutschen Album Charts sowie Platz 9 in den UK Top 40 Rock/Metal Charts finden sich weitere Einträge in anderen Ländern. Die Melodic Death Metal-Band DARKNESS EVERYWHERE hat mit “To Conquer Eternal Damnation” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Oakland und wird am 10. The Sheffield based industrial cult act Clock DVA is back with a new EP on April 30 via the Spanish label Frigio Records: “Re-Konstructed (Atom & Scanner remixes)”. The release comes as a 180g heavy black vinyl with an etched side with DVA’s logo. Atom™ delivers his re-imagining of “De-Konstructor” while Scanner took care of “Rayonist Refraction #1”.

Clock DVA was formed in 1978 by Adi Newton (born Gary Coates) and Steven “Judd” Turner. Nowadays the band consists of Adi Newton and Maurizio Martinucci.

The early years of Clock DVA (1978–1981) were marked by the release of “White Souls in Black Suits” and “Thirst”, projects that saw the band dabbling in experimental electronic music. Utilizing treated tape loops and synthesizers, their sound was a novel contribution to the industrial music landscape. The tragic death of Turner in 1981 due to an accidental drug overdose led to a brief dissolution of the band, highlighting a tumultuous period in their journey.

During this period the band created a fusion of intense dance rhythms with experimental sounds. However, internal conflicts led to another split, with Newton subsequently founding The Anti-Group to continue his experimental endeavors.

Resurgence came in 1987 as Newton reformed Clock DVA, leading to the release of “Buried Dreams” and “Man-Amplified”, albums that delved deeper into cybernetic themes and sampling techniques. Despite facing challenges with record labels and a hiatus that lasted until the late 2000s, Newton’s disruptive vision for Clock DVA actually never changed.

The reactivation of Clock DVA in 2008 alongside creative partner Jane Radion Newton marked a new chapter for the band with a lineup that included Maurizio “TeZ” Martinucci and Shara Vasilenko.

The team that created Triton Festival and Dark Side of the Con, VampireFreaks, announces the 2024 edition of Dark Force Fest, a convention gathering featuring an exciting lineup of the most beloved international legacy bands along with the newest trending artists from the gothic, industrial, darkwave, and post-punk scenes. CAMMIE BEVERLY hat mit “House of Grief” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der OCEANS OF SLUMBER-Sängerin und soll im Laufe der nächsten Monate über das schwedische Label Icons Creating Evil Art erscheinen. Stilistisch bewegt sich das Debütalbum der US-Amerikanerin zwischen Southern Gothic und Dark Americana. Zum Inhalt meint die Musikerin:

“”House of Grief” ist nicht nur ein Album, es ist ein Zufluchtsort. Ein Ort, an dem Geschichten leben, atmen und widerhallen. Ein Zufluchtsort, an dem der Schmerz Trost findet und die Schatten mit der Hoffnung tanzen.”

Die Alternative Rock-Band ONLAP hat 2023 einen Plattenvertrag mit AFM Records abgeschlossen. Die erste gemeinsame Veröffentlichung ist das Studioalbum “Waves”, das am 14. Juni 2024 über das neue Label erscheinen wird. Reinhören kann man schon jetzt mittels des Musikvideos “Never Too Late”, eine Zusammenarbeit mit Kiiara.

Zuvor gab es bereits eine Reihe von Single-Auskopplungen, darunter auch das Lyric-Video “Afterglow” sowie die Nummer “Nevermind” bei YouTube. Zudem folgte nach dem Video-Clip zu “Crawling In The Dark”  und dem Lyric-Video zu “Fever” mit “Hypnotized” ein weiterer Video-Clip.

“Wir kommen viel aus dem Grunge, und dieser Song war eine Gelegenheit für uns, zu unseren Wurzeln zurückzukehren, mit einem starken Text über Sucht”, erklärt die Band.

ONLAP kommentieren den Vertragsabschluss wie folgt:

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band OPIUM DEATH hat mit “Vesuvius” einen dritten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Genocidal Nemesis” veröffentlicht. Im Februar 2024 ist mit “The Condemned” der zweiten Vorab-Track des Albums erschienen.

“Zu der Zeit, als ich diesen Song schrieb, und vor allem, als ich mir den Text ausdachte, gab es in den Nachrichten und in den sozialen Medien einen Trend zu Geschichten über das zunehmende Mobbing unter Kindern in der Schule und darüber, wie die Opfer schließlich Selbstmord begingen. Das hat mich gereizt, einen Song für diese Opfer zu schreiben, aber auf eine Weise, die ihre Gedanken und Gefühle im Jenseits widerspiegelt”, sagt Gitarrist Irvin Gonzalez.

“Genocidal Nemesis” ist nach zwei Demos das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Illinois und wird am 19. April 2024 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es zudem den Track “Genocidal Nemesis I: Fear” zu hören.

“Die Single handelt von der Geburt des Antichristen als Ergebnis der Anbetung des Geldes durch den Menschen”, erklärt die Band.

Die Post-Hardcore / Alternative Metal-Band SONS OF ALPHA CENTAURI hat nach dem Opener “Ephemeral” nun auch den Titeltrack ihres kommenden Albums “Pull” veröffentlicht. Es ist das vierte Album der Engländer.

“Pull” wurde gemeinsam mit Lance Jackman und Joe Johnson in den Pus Cavern Studios in Sacramento aufgenommen, von Dan Lucas gemixt und von Nick Zampiello gemastert. Erscheinen wird das Album am 28. März 2024 via Exile On Mainstream.

Die Black Metal-Band NAXEN hat mit “Descending into a Deeper Darkness” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Towards the Tomb of Times” (2020) das zweite Album des deutschen Trios aus Münster.

Die Songs auf dem Album verkörpern die Überzeugung, dass alle Hoffnung verloren ist, dass das Grauen die Existenz beherrscht, dass das Leben das Trauma der Geburt ist und schließlich die unwiderlegbare Sinnlosigkeit allen Fleisches.

By the end of 2023 I discovered the album “Ode An Die Arbeit” by German duo Bagger 258. This is a pure old-school EBM project driven by Nico von der Eisenmühle and Tim Schmelzer. Their self-released debut-album stands for a mature, well-crafted and professional EBM sound. “Ode An Die Arbeit” reached the first place from the famous DAC (Deutsche Alternative Charts) which for a self-released production is quite exceptional. But their work is exceptional and is for sure one of the best retro-EBM projects in quite a long time. I got in touch with Nico and Tim to introduce you to the sound universe of Bagger 258.

Q: How did you come to set up Bagger 258? And what can you say about your music background and connection with Projekt 26? Is Projekt 26 still active by the way?

Tim: We’ve always vibed with the whole harsh and hard EBM scene, but Projekt 26 was more than just that. We were on a mission to resurrect something no one seemed to be messing with anymore –that punchy, in-your-face Anhalt EBM. We spent a good chunk of the last decade trying to cook up tunes together, but nothing really clicked. Then, like magic, Bagger 258 waltzed in, felt damn good, and the songs practically wrote themselves.

Q: Bagger 258 is clearly dealing with old-school EBM. What means EBM to you and what do you try to achieve in your very own song writing and sound production?

Nico: Just like Tim mentioned, we wanted to make music that’s totally us and kinda missing from the scene. Bagger 258 nails it with simple, old-school bass lines but a killer, in-your-face sound. Getting that unmistakable ‘Bagger-sound’ is the key for us. We’ve got some song ideas that just didn’t click, so we ditched them. Bottom line: we’re after basslines that make you stomp, a brutal vibe, and tunes that stick with you.

Q: You last year (self)-released the debut album “Ode An Die Arbeit”. Can you share with us the highlights and main things you kept in mind from the writing and recording of the album?

Tim: We messed around quite a bit, experimenting until we stumbled upon something we liked. There were moments when new samples or playful lyrics had us cracking up, but for the most part, our gut feeling steered us in the right direction, shaping the final drafts of the album. Surprisingly, we drew inspiration from genres way beyond EBM; things like Rock, Metal, or Indie music sparked our creativity.

Q: You asked Daniel Hallhuber (founder of Young & Cold Records) for the mixing and Stefan Poiss (Mind.In.A.Box) for the mastering of the album. What has been their true input and impact on the final result of “Ode An Die Arbeit”? And would you also consider working with a producer?

Nico: Let’s clear the air on this one: we had Gustav and Jonatan from Sturm Café, as our production advisors. And big shoutout to Daniel for weaving his magic in the mixing department. He sculpted the sounds and ideas just the way we wanted them. Major gratitude to him, and you bet we’re teaming up again.

Tim: Agreed. For mastering we were set on having Stefan as our engineer right from the get-go. His own projects are top-notch, and no matter the music vibes, his final mastering is always on point. The awesome back-and-forth communication, with him sending us options, helped us nail down the best results. Stefan, you’re stuck with us –round two is definitely happening!

Q: Did you get the opportunity to get signed to a label to release “Ode An Die Arbeit” or is it a deliberate choice to get active as D.I.Y. (do it yourself) project? Do you’ve further plans/perspectives about working with labels?

Nico: Honestly, starting from scratch was crucial for us. We craved the freedom to shape everything from the ground up, from the tunes to the artwork. The whole album, except for the mix and master, is our baby. We took things to the next level, turning our ideas into reality. Sure, it got challenging, like when we were in the trenches producing and cutting the music video for “Muskeln Und Maschinen”, but the whole experience was a wild ride, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

As for labels, we’ve kept it indie for now. We wanted our debut album to be a solo flight without any external pressure. Who knows what the future holds? Maybe down the road, Bagger 258 will be ready to team up with a label and start something epic. Let’s keep the door open for that possibility.

Q: I noticed “Ode An Die Arbeit” reached the first place of the famous D.A.C. right? This is quite unusual for self-released albums so what does it mean to you and what’s the impact of the D.A.C.? Can you also tell us what you’ve to do and manage (think about promotion, contacts etc…) to get selected for the D.A.C.?

Tim: This question hits the sweet spot. Landing in first place with our album is beyond thrilling, and we’re genuinely honored. Once the creative dust settled, Nico and I brainstormed how to unleash our music on the world. The immediate answer? A legit music video, of course. Surprisingly, it’s not a common move in the scene, probably because it’s a ton of work. But we were up for the challenge.

Nico: Absolutely. The video was a beast to tackle, but we knew it wasn’t the only card up our sleeve. Our solid connections in the music world, thanks to DJ gigs at ‘Melodrom’ and rubbing shoulders with awesome DJs like Clemens and Ric, played a crucial role. They, along with many others, helped us spread the Bagger 258 vibes far and wide.

Oh and not to forget: we do have quite a fanbase in Sweden, thanks to Gustav and Jonatan (Sturm Café) & Ronny (Radio Virus / Container 90).

Die Hardcore-Band FALSE REALITY hat mit “Opposites React” eine neue Single veröffentlicht. Die neue Single der Engländer aus London wird Teil ihrer Debüt-EP sein.

“In diesem Song geht es darum, dass man sich so lange in einer Box gefangen fühlte, bis man dann seine Stimme fand und zum ersten Mal das Gefühl hatte, etwas zu sagen zu haben”, sagt Sängerin Rachel Rigby.
