Flags, an Austin, TX-based punk band, is brought to life by Reid Haynie on guitar and vocals, Cait McCoy also on guitar and vocals, Lucy Weatherby handling bass, and Carson Braymer on the drums. Each member boasts a lifelong engagement with music, tracing their origins back to diverse locales such as Ohio, Mississippi, and various parts of Texas, before their paths intertwined in Austin to form the dynamic quartet.

“We’re all just full of ideas, so it’s really easy to feed off of one another,” says the band.

Their double single release, Levelheads/Adventure Capitalist, reflects upon their shared talents, influences, and backgrounds, splitting vocal duties and lead guitar. There’s a ferocity to them reminiscent of the B-52s, Devo, X, and The Gun Club, with the political sentiments of The Clash and Gang of Four, and the late 80s and early 90s punk and alt-rock earnestness of Bikini Kill and Sonic Youth.

Levelheads delves into the quest for meaningful employment and the challenge of persuading potential employers of one’s worth. As the song unfolds, it evolves into a critique of adhering to societal expectations without reaping the anticipated rewards. The piece pointedly addresses the income disparity that favours men over others, expressing a sense of betrayal by the promise that higher education is a surefire path to financial stability, only to be met with the harsh reality of lingering financial struggles. Despite being levelheaded, mature, and prepared for the workforce, the speaker faces disillusionment with the wage gap and the devaluation of their education.

The Titan submersible incident highlights the perilous nature of the ocean and the extreme lengths to which the ultra-wealthy will go in pursuit of adventure, often at considerable risk. This disregard for the ocean’s power and unpredictability prompts serious ethical considerations regarding such high-stakes ventures. This is further explored in Adventure Capitalist, which delves into the foolhardy fate of five billionaires who perished in their quest to locate the Titanic, offering a critical look at the intersection of wealth, risk, and exploration.

“It sort of wrote itself after that news story broke,” says the band. Lines like “How does it feel to wither away?” and “to all of us, it’s just another day” are kind of saying “how does it feel to struggle like the rest of us?” Or “What’s it like to be on a sticky situation?” Because, let’s be real, most of the folks in that sub likely hadn’t seen a day of struggle in their lives. It may be in bad taste? But oh well!”

Es ist nach “Holocene Extinction” (2020) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Arkansas und wird am 3. Mai 2024 via 20 Buck Spin erscheinen. Mit “Written by the Victor” gibt es vorab einen Video-Clip.

“”Written By The Victor” ist ein Track über die Manipulation historischer Erzählungen”, sagt Sänger Stan Liszewski. “In dem Song geht es darum, dass die herrschende Klasse so viel Macht hat, dass sie die Geschichte so umschreiben kann, dass sie in das von ihr gewählte Narrativ passt.”

Die Progressive Rock-Band VELCROCRANES hat mit “Afterlife, Pt. 2” einen Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “What If I Die” veröffentlicht. Der Song bezieht sich stark auf existenzielle Literatur, wie die Werke von Camus und Sartre, und spiegelt die existenzielle Angst und die Suche nach persönlichem Sinn inmitten des gesellschaftlichen Drucks zur Anpassung wider.

“‘Afterlife, Pt. 2’ ist ein Zeugnis für die inneren Kämpfe, denen wir alle gegenüberstehen, und bietet die tröstliche Botschaft, dass es in Ordnung ist, seinen eigenen Weg zu gehen, um das zu finden, was wirklich zu einem passt”, sagt Gitarristin Liza Kotova.

“What If I Die” ist das erste Album der Russen, die 2018 mit “Afterlife” eine EP veröffentlicht haben. Zum Album meint die Band: “Unser Ziel war es, eine Parallele zu ziehen zu der Art und Weise, wie sich das Verständnis vom Sinn des Lebens, die eigenen Werte und Entscheidungen sowie die Wahrnehmung des Todes im Laufe des Lebens verändern.”

Das Debütalbum von VELCROCRANES ist am 27. Oktober 2023 erschienen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Carl Glover. “Die Idee hinter dem Cover-Artwork ist so einfach wie effektiv”, erklärt die Band. “Es scheint den Fokus auf das Intellektuelle und Metaphorische gegenüber dem Konkreten und Körperlichen zu betonen – zusammen mit dem minimalistischen Farbschema fügt sich dies perfekt ein und spiegelt die Musik wider.”

Born in Brunswick, Georgia, a heart condition nearly took Kelly from this world just as soon as she’d arrived, her tiny body robbed of its heartbeat several times just a few days after her birth. She managed to rally through this crisis and would go on to pen short stories and songs to soothe her isolation and sadness. A talent agent cast her in a television commercial when she was nine, which began a four-year journey into short films, series, and feature-length movies. Music, however, is her passion, citing the healing magic it works in her own life to the way it affects others. An enchanting artist, and a tower of strength.

Nach zehn Jahren veröffentlichte SEBASTIAN BACH im Dezember 2023 wieder neue Musik: ‘What Do I Got To Lose?’ war der Titel der neuen Single, das Video dazu gibt’s bei YouTube.

Geschrieben haben den Song Bach, Myles Kennedy und Elvis Baskette.

„Für mich atmet ‘What Do I Got To Lose?’ den Geist der aktuellen Zeit“, sagt Sebastian Bach. „Dies ist eine Hymne für all jene, die auf die Bildfläche zurückkehren und es allen zeigen wollen. Es ist Zeit für eine Kampfansage, man sollte es mal wieder wie früher krachen lassen!“

Das Stück ist gleichzeitig der erste Vorgeschmack auf das Studioalbum “Child Within The Man”, aus dem der Musiker nun mit “Everybody Bleeds” eine zweite Single ausgekoppelt hat.

“Child Within The Man” wurde von Elvis Baskette produziert und gemischt, das Mastering übernahm Robert Ludwig. Erscheinen wird die Platte am 10. Mai 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music auf CD, Vinyl, Kassette sowie digital.

Das Symphonic Metal-Projekt DIANNE hat mit “A Symphonic Tragedy” eine dritte Single ihres Albums “Soulward Bound” veröffentlicht. Der Song sei eine Ode an die Stimme, als dass sich die Sängerin über ihre lebensrettende Bauchoperation öffnet, die sie vor fünf Jahren über sich ergehen lassen musste und die nicht ohne Risiko war:

“Diese Operation hat mich zwar gerettet, aber ich hätte auch das verlieren können, was mein lebenslanger Begleiter, mein Zufluchtsort und meine große Liebe war: meine Stimme.”

Im Herbst 2023 ist mit “Unleash the Siren” die zweite Single des Albums erschienen. Dabei handelt es sich um einen Song über den Umgang mit einer posttraumatischen Belastungsstörung.

Im Februar 2023 ist mit “After The Storm” eine erste Single des Albums erschienen. Es sei ein Lied darüber, für sich selbst einzustehen und seine Position als Spielfigur im Krieg eines anderen aufzugeben.

“Soulward Bound” ist das erste Album des von Dianne van Giersbergen (EX LIBRIS, Ex-XANDRIA) ins Leben gerufenen Projekts, an welchem Produzent und Co-Komponist Joost van den Broek (STAR ONE, Ex-AFTER FOREVER), Gitarrist Isaac Delahaye (EPICA), Bassist Johan van Stratum (BLIND GUARDIAN, STREAM OF PASSION) sowie Drummer Koen Herfst (VANDENBERG) mitwirken. Der Release des Albums könnte jedoch noch dauern, als dass die Künstlerin plant, bis zum Albumrelease jedes Jahr zwei neue Singles daraus zu veröffentlichen, ehe es nach fünf Jahren zur richtigen Veröffentlichung kommen soll.

Die Symphonic / Progressive Metal-Band SYMAKYA hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Franzosen aus Nancy ihr neues Album “Project 11: The Landing” veröffentlichen. Es ist nach “Majestic 12: Open Files” (2011) – und stolzen 13 Jahren – das zweite Album der 2008 gegründeten Band, die von der Prä-Astronautik inspiriert ist.

Mit “Project 11: The Landing” begibt sich die Band auf die Suche nach Zeichen und Beweisen, um die menschliche Evolution, Komplexität und das Streben nach Wahrheit zu erklären.

Background/Info: French-Spanish Pedro Peñas Robles is a renowned artist who has been involved with different sonic projects but he’s also a DJ, performer, author and label owner (Unknown Pleasures Records). This work is getting us back to his most ‘famous’ music project HIV+ featuring a fine selection of twenty nine songs he released all over the years with other artists.

Content: Robles collaborated with very famous artists like The hacker, Millimetric, Chris Shape, Blind Delon, Adriano Canzian, Maman Küsters ao. The album is featuring original songs, cover versions (from Liaisons Dangereuses, DAF and The Normal) and remixes (by bands like Absolute Body Control, Radical G, Equitant, Marc Hurtado, Cruise [CTRL] ao) but also songs from one of his side-projects Adan+Ilse. The work brings us back to Minimal-Electro/EBM on which Pedro added his vocals.

+ + + : I first of all salute the artwork of the CD-edit but next there’s the content. I think it totally stands for the EBM-style the artist has often revealed by different releases on his own label. Solid bass lines, danceable beats, and a few, harsh, Industrial elements, bringing 80s EBM alive. On top of it all there’s the powerful and sexy voice of Robles. The list of ‘friends’ he has worked with is impressive and often resulted in a great symbiosis between music and vocals.

– – – : I’m less convinced by the different cover versions (cf. “Warm Leatherette”, “Los Niños Del Parque” and “Der Mussolini”). It’s always tricky covering legendary songs which I think are more suited to live performances instead of an album.

Conclusion: This is a great opportunity to re-discover HIV+ (which seems to be no longer active) and his collaboration with great, Electronic, artists.

Die Metalcore-Band ESCHALON hat mit “Shallow” eine neue Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Der Song reflektiert das Kindheitstrauma von Sänger Brad Makinson, der von seinem Peiniger lebendig begraben wurde:

“Als Kind musste ich körperliche, geistige und emotionale Qualen ertragen, die mir ein Tyrann zufügte. Von Angst gelähmt, trug ich die Last meiner Qualen im Stillen und war in einem Kreislauf aus Isolation und Verzweiflung gefangen. Selbst diejenigen, die mir am nächsten standen, wussten nichts vom Ausmaß meines Leidens, während ich darum kämpfte, den Verrat eines “Freundes”, der zum Peiniger wurde, zu verarbeiten. Das erschütterndste Kapitel meiner Geschichte ereignete sich eines Tages auf einem örtlichen Spielplatz, wo meine Unschuld erstickt wurde und meine Kindheitsträume sich in Albträume verwandelten. Im Alter von zehn Jahren wurde ich mit meiner eigenen Sterblichkeit konfrontiert, als ich gezwungen wurde, mein eigenes Grab zu schaufeln, nur um von meinem Peiniger lebendig begraben zu werden. Glücklicherweise griff ein Passant ein, der mich aus den Klauen des Todes zog und mir ein frühes Grab ersparte.”

Was ist eigentlich tragischer, wenn Männer auf See bleiben und ihre ohnehin verarmten Familien trauern, oder wenn Wale aus ihren sehr sozialen Familienverbünden herausgerissen und grauenvoll abgeschlachtet werden? Nun, ich habe gelernt, dass man mit Färöern und Isländern – vor allem als Tourist – nicht über Waljagd reden soll, sofern man sich nicht auf emotionale Diskussionen einlassen will. Schließlich steckt diese aus mitteleuropäischer Sicht grausame Art der Jagd tief in der DNA der färöischen Bevölkerung und ist zentraler Teil der färöischen Folklore. Die Wahrheit ist eben auch, dass das Leben auf den kargen nordeuropäischen Inseln noch vor 100 Jahren ohne den Walfang (oder die Fischerei) schlicht nicht möglich gewesen wäre.

Dass HAMFERÐ nun mit „Men Guðs hond er sterk“ (dt: Doch Gottes Hand ist stark) ein ganzes Album einem der dramatischsten Unglücke der färöischen Seefahrerei widmen, passt punktgenau zur folkloristischen Ausrichtung der Band. Wie HAMFERÐ selbst zum Thema Walfjagd stehen, ist nicht bekannt, „Men Guðs hond er sterk“ ist jedoch mehr Dokumentation denn tragische Heldengeschichte oder Glorifizierung einer Barbarei. Das Unglück, das im Jahr 1915 in Sandvik passierte, kostete 14 Männern das Leben. Kurz zur Einordnung: 2015 lebten 87 Menschen in Sandvik. Wie einschneidend diese Sturmnacht gewesen sein muss, kann man sich ausrechnen. Dass HAMFERÐ darin nun das perfekte Fundament für ihre Doom-Death-Tragödien finden, ist selbsterklärend.

HAMFERÐ öffnen sich: Der massive Doom-Death bekommt auf „Men Guðs hond er sterk“ neue Facetten.
Auf den ersten Eindruck scheinen HAMFERÐ seit „Tamsins Likam“ kaum verändert zu haben. Die Tristesse eines Regentages dominiert das Album, Songs wie „Marrusorg“ führen die tragischen Songs des Vorgängers kongenial fort, doch beim dritten oder vierten Hören wird bewusst, wie viel schwärzer die Musik der Färöer geworden ist. War schon das letzte Album nicht gerade positiv, ist „Men Guðs hond er sterk“ in seiner Atmosphäre noch bedrückender und karger. Auch unter einem anderen Gesichtspunkt sind HAMFERÐ noch schwärzer: Zusammen mit Neu-Gitarrist Eyðun í Geil Hvannastein, hat sich auch das Riffing stellenweise verändert. In „Rikin“ und „Í hamferð“ verirren sich in das massive Death-Doom-Fundament Tremolo-Gitarren und kurze, schnelle Momente, die sogar die Grenze zum Blast Beat überschreiten. Auch mit dem hässlichen fast-schon-Sludge-Monster „Hvølja“ zeigen HAMFERÐ die Zähne – und sind in diesen fünf Minuten so packend wie kaum zuvor.

Gerade diese Momente sind es, die „Men Guðs hond er sterk“ mitreißend werden lassen, während die getragenen, feierlichen Momente mit dieser Intensität nicht mithalten können, Pathos hin oder her. Und auch das ein oder andere große Epos, das die Tränen ins Gesicht treibt, fehlt auf dem Album, dabei performen die Instrumentalisten so, als wären es ihre eigenen Väter, die im Sturm umkamen. Immerhin wertet Jón Aldarás Stimme die Kompositionen auf. Sein Spektrum aus höllentiefen Growls bis hin zu großem Drama ist wie schon auf den letzten Alben ausgezeichnet und facettenreich. Auch die wuchtige Produktion von Gitarrist Theodor Kapnas, die mit ihrer Undurchdringlichkeit die Klaustrophobie an Bord eines dem Untergang geweihten Schiffs spürbar werden lässt, passt gut zu dem Drama von „Men Guðs hond er sterk“.

Bedrückend, karg und schwärzer als in der Vergangenheit: „Men Guðs hond er sterk“ zeigt HAMFERÐ als intensive Performer.
Das dritte Album von HAMFERÐ ist so voll mit nautischer Tragik, wie die Lunge einer Wasserleiche mit Salzwasser. Dass „Men Guðs hond er sterk“ dann auch mit einem Zeitzeugenbericht endet, verschafft am Ende die Gänsehaut, die man sich in den sieben Songs zuvor öfter gewünscht hätte: Der Radiomitschnitt aus den 1950ern wird über ein ruhiges Outro gelegt und lässt Album und Konzept noch viel greifbarer werden. Auch wenn 109 Jahre zwischen dem Unglück und heute liegen, es scheint nur ein Wimpernschlag vergangen zu sein seit damals, angesichts dieser noch immer praktizierten, brutalen Traditionen. Wer daran nicht verzweifelt, ist für HAMFERÐs bitteren Doom-Death gewappnet.

Die Death Metal-Band WITCH VOMIT hat nach “Blood of Abomination” mit “Black Wings of Desolation” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums  “Funeral Sanctum” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “A Scream from the Tomb Below” (2016) und “Buried Deep in a Bottomless Grave” (2019) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Portland.

Es geht um das Ende einer angespannten Beziehung, um das Wissen, dass das, was kommen wird, unausweichlich ist, so wie man weiß, dass die Jahreszeit zu Ende geht.”

“This Summer” wird Teil eines neuen und ersten Albums des Solo-Künstlers sein. Als Gäste konnte der Finne DEREK SHERINIAN (Ex-DREAM THEATER) and Christian Määttä (ARC SPECTRA) begrüßen.

Die Progressive Heavy Metal-Band THALIA meldet sich mit einem neuen Album zurück: “The River of Books” wird am 26. April 2024 via Rockshots Records erscheinen – und somit beinahe ein Vierteljahrhundert später als das bisher einzige Album der Franzosen, “Forest of Minds”.

“The River of Books”, das mit einem Cover-Artwork von Stan W. Decker (u.a. für PYOGENESIS tätig) ausgestattet wurde, behandelt Themen wie Ökologie, menschliche Beziehungen, Nostalgie und das Wesen des Lebens selbst. Vorab gibt es zum Titeltrack ein Lyric-Video.

THALIA sind Sänger Fabrice “Emmanuelson” Cassaro (RISING STEEL, VENUS SYNDROME, ELLIPSIS), Gitarrist Thierry Bizet, Bassist Stephane Beraud und Drummer Christophe Denk.

Das sechste Album der kanadischen Power/Heavy Metal-Band trägt den Titel “Phantoma” und erscheint am 10. Mai 2024 via Napalm Records.

“Phantoma” ist ein Konzeptalbum über Künstliche Intelligenz. UNLEASH THE ARCHER-Sängerin Brittney Slayes entwickelte das Konzept bereits im Jahr 2021, also lange bevor die Diskussion um die künstliche Intelligenz ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. “Phantoma” erzählt von den Versuchen der KI, auf einem dystopischen Planeten in der nahen Zukunft Gefühle zu entwickeln.

Die Power-Disco-Band ROYAL REPUBLIC hat nach dem Video-Clip zum Titeltrack mit dem Video-Clip zu “Lazerlove” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “LoveCop” veröffentlicht. Es ist das fünfte Album der Schweden und wird am 7. Juni 2024 erscheinen.

“LoveCop” wurde von Adam Grahn und Michael Ilbert in den Hansa Studios in Berlin produziert.

Das SUMMER BREEZE Festival 2024 in Dinkelsbühl wird vom 14. bis 17. August stattfinden. Nun haben die Organisatoren mit einer weiteren Bandwelle das Line-up um zehn Acts erweitert: MESHUGGAH, LORDI, MOONSPELL, MYRKUR, ARKONA, PUNK ROCK FACTORY, SUOTANA, TILINTETGJORT, ALCHEMIA sowie BLASMUSIK ILLENSCHWANG treten 2024 auf dem Festival auf.

Zuvor gab es die Ankündigung von 13 weiteren Bands. Neben dem Headliner HEAVEN SHALL BURN statten auch EMMURE, EQUILIBRIUM, OBSCURA, PAIN, SYLOSIS, AETHERIAN, ANKOR, NAKKEKNAEKKER, PEST CONTROL, THRON, VISCERA sowie ein Überraschungsact dem Festival einen Besuch ab.

Update (15. April 2024): SPIRITWORLD haben ihre Europatermine 2024 und damit auch den Auftritt auf dem SUMMER BREEZE abgesagt. Als Ersatz konnten DUST BOLT gewonnen werden.

Informationen zum Ticket-Vorverkauf beim Summer Breeze Open Air 2024:
Das Early Bird Ticket für 179 Euro (inkl. 25% Discount) war bereits nach wenigen Tagen komplett vergriffen. Limitiert war es auf die ersten 20.000 Tickets. Mittlerweile kostet das reguläre Ticket 239,99€. Tagestickets sind zum Preis von 89,99€ verfügbar. Eine Sonderaktion gibt es hierbei für jüngere Metal-Fans: Unter dem Motto “New Blood” können sich alle Jahrgänge 2005 und jünger für den Donnerstag (15.08.2024) um einen limitierten Platz auf der Nachwuchs-Gästeliste bewerben – mit etwas Glück erhält man dann für diesen Tag freien Eintritt auf das Festival.

Mit dem “Social Ticket” steht darüber hinaus ein limitiertes Kontingent von 100 Eintrittskarten zur Verfügung, mit dem Metalfans, die in finanzielle Schieflage geraten sind, der Besuch auf dem SUMMER BREEZE ermöglicht werden soll. Los Angeles’ outlandish and genre-defying dark music act Patriarchy, known for their distinctive blend of goth pop, industrial, and pliable metal sounds, is set to kick off their European tour this Friday, March 22nd. The tour, which spans various countries, marks a pivotal moment for the band as it is their first since welcoming a new member to their personal band family — a baby, that is! Maybe they should call the band Matriarchy now? (Side note, besides Actually Huizenga, the only other goth musician we’ve ever seen kill it on stage while pregnant was Patricia Morrison.)

With their recent work on the album “The Unself” and its accompanying remix album “Forcefully Rearranged,” Patriarchy has been crafting a soundscape that pulls from a diverse array of influences and textures. The remix album, which deconstructs “The Unself,” features sixteen tracks that range from sampler-driven industrial bangers to modern techno to Wax Trax-era evocative pieces​​​​.

The band, led by the truly outrageous Huizenga, is taking their spectacular live performances to Europe. Known for their wild and daring shows that combine elements of sex, humor, and theater, the band never shies away from pushing boundaries and delivering over-the-top productions.

The European tour is especially noteworthy as it includes an appearance at the renowned Roadburn Festival and a special show at Lido in Berlin alongside Die Selektion. In addition to Spit Mask, the band is also thrilled to bring out Void Vision for her first shows in Europe since 2019. This will be Patriarchy’s first time playing in countries like Denmark, Hungary, Sweden, Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, and their very first shows in the UK, featuring a long-awaited performance in London​​.

This tour also serves as a crescendo before the band takes a hiatus to craft a new album, a follow-up to their acclaimed 2022 release “The Unself.”

As this tour marks their last European excursion for some time, fans are encouraged to catch their electrifying performances live. With the tour commencing in mere days, the anticipation is palpable, not just for the music but for the “wtf did I just watch” communal experience that Patriarchy is known to offer.
