In the midst of the pandemic’s most ennui-filled days, two souls, Mona and C., decided to transform their cabin fever into riffs and beats, birthing the Noise-Post-punk powerhouse that is Elektrokohle. Hailing from the cultural melting pot of Berlin and boasting a lineup as eclectic as the city’s Imbiss offering, the trio weaves Italian finesse, German precision, and Brazilian rhythm into a sound colder than a German winter.

The origin of their moniker is a nod to a cult classic documentary capturing Einstürzende Neubauten’s historic first gig post-Wall tumble in an East Berlin factory. It’s a bit like naming your band “Woodstock Mudslide” – cheeky, with a side of historical gravitas.

Meet the ensemble: Suzan Flag, slapping the bass with the kind of intensity that’d make a metronome sweat; Mr. Cigarette Butt, who croons and churns synths with a name that screams “I was born in a dive bar”; and Mona Manie, shredding the six-string with the kind of fervor that might just summon the punk spirits of ’80s Berlin from beneath the rumble of gentrification.

Picture this: ’80s punk barrels into a noise music soirée, gets a taste for the scene, and then decides it’s not leaving until it’s infused the place with some dark, krauty surf and a splash of punk-blues. They’ve d믭 this concoction “Cold Punk” – it’s like donning shades after dark, oozing cool with an air of mystery. Their sound, a visceral blend that calls to mind the raw energy of Suicide, the chaotic fervor of the Birthday Party, and the brooding intensity of Warsaw, is laced with sparse bilingual lyrics, relentless motorik rhythms, the metallic clatter of the industrial age, and a synth line so hypnotic it could lead a snake dance. This is all crafted DIY-style on an 8-track recorder, capturing the raw, unfiltered essence of their vision.

“I Wanna Cry” comes to life under the direction of Brazilian maestro and visual wizard Murilo Sá, set against the evocative backdrop of Berlin’s Neurotitan Gallery (nestled within Haus Schwarzenberg). The video immerses its audience in a monochromatic world where post-punk vigor and raw, unbridled emotion collide. Shot primarily within the enigmatic walls of the Neurotitan Gallery, the visuals serve up a feast of stark imagery and mesmerizing stroboscopic effects, perfectly echoing the song’s deep dive into themes of yearning and desolation.

“Viewers are immersed in a world reflecting the internal turmoil and isolation conveyed in the song’s lyrics, with the stark contrast of light and shadow intensifying the emotional landscape,” says the band.

Elektrokohle unleashed their debut 4-track Tape-EP onto the world last year, pieced together in the creative sanctum of Herzbergstr. alongside Tobias Lill from the eclectic Dong Xuan Productions. This tape spins tales with tracks like Junkie House and the arresting single Vollmond.

The groove doesn’t stop there; a 7″ vinyl is set to make waves, featuring the soul-stirring I Wanna Cry and the contemplative Abstand, all wrapped up in the craftsmanship of producer Fabio Buemi at the iconic Funkhaus Berlin. This vinyl gem is hitting the shelves courtesy of the collaborative efforts of Dushtu Records (France) and Off Label Records (Germany).

Elektrokohle brings the thunder, earning them a legion of devoted fans through their electrifying performances. Das war’s also. Wir hatten unsere Chance, und wir haben sie nicht genutzt. Weder die da oben mit den Fäden in der Hand, noch wir hier unten. Schluss, aus, vorbei. Die nach uns machen noch das Licht aus, dann wird diese kleine Kugel noch ein paar Milliarden Jahre ihr Potenzial vergeuden, bevor sie zusammen mit der sterbenden Sonne verglüht. Bumms, aus die Maus. War auch nicht schade drum, seien wir ehrlich. Vier Grad mehr und hier lebt nichts mehr. Wir haben schon 1,1° C geschafft, und es geht von Jahr zu Jahr schneller.

Während wir hier noch wahlweise denken, wir könnten noch was drehen, oder dass passiert eben nichts passiert, weil früher gab’s ja auch schon warme Februare, ist doch schon längst das „End Terrain“ erreicht. Schon immer haben LOCRIAN ihre Botschaften des Untergangs in die Welt hinausposaunt, besonders eindrücklich bei „Infinite Dissolution“, das sich mit dem derzeitigen Artensterben, der sechsten Auslöschung befasst. Und was passiert? Es interessiert keinen so richtig und ist doch in vollem Gange. LOCRIAN, die nun neun Jahre endlich den eigentlichen Nachfolger zu „Infinite Dissolution“ präsentieren, haben auch schon aufgehört zu warnen. Warum auch? Vergebene Liebesmüh. Stattdessen zeichnet das US-Trio ein dunkles Bild vom Ende.

Eine Dystopie, die unter die Haut geht: „End Terrain“ baut das konsequent aus, was LOCRIAN zwischen 2010 und 2015 angelegt haben.
Doch so unversöhnlich die Geschichte sein mag, so zugänglich ist die Musik. „End Terrain“ zeigt, dass LOCRIAN ihrem experimentellen Charakter zum Trotz unglaublich gute Songschreiber sind und neben dem maximalistischen Anspruch, den sie mit ihrem siebten regulären Album – die zahlreichen EPs, Kollaborationen und experimentellen Releases nicht mitgerechnet – zelebrieren, auf den Punkt komponieren können. Das beweist schon der Opener „Chronoscapes“, der die Hörer*innen gleich in die dystopische Welt von „End Terrain“ wirft, voller Chaos, Lärm und zugänglicher Harmonien.

In weniger als vier Minuten lassen LOCRIAN im Zeitraffer vieles von dem ablaufen, was in der kommenden Dreiviertelstunde zu hören ist, danach kehrt so etwas wie Ruhe ein. Das achtminütige „Utopias“ basiert auf einem pulsierenden Groove von Steven Hess und zahllosen Soundscapes, in dem Terence Hannum mit Cleangesang den Erzähler gibt, fährt verzerrtem Lärm, Progrock-Gitarrensoli und atmosphärische Synthesizer auf, bis im zweiten Teil ein treibender, vertrackter Groove das Stück auf Post Rock-Art immer weiter steigert, bis hin zu einem Crescendo aus Lärm und Brutalität, jedoch mit einem melancholischen Unterbau. Fucking wow.

Organisch, dynamisch, lebendig: LOCRIAN wissen genau, wie die Musik auf „End Terrain“ am besten klingt.
Auch in der Folge schöpfen LOCRIAN aus dem Vollen: Die vergleichsweise kompakten Songs schaffen es punktgenau, Spannung zu erzeugen und aufzubauen. „The World Is Gone, There Is No World“ verbindet subtile Drones, Gitarren, Synthesizer und Gesänge und fließt in einen düsteren Groove und wird immer wieder von peitschendem Lärm unterbrochen. Doch LOCRIAN können auch sehr direkte Musik schreiben. „Excarnate Light“ wird angeführt von hypnotischen Leadgitarren, baut im Mittelteil immense Spannung auf und endet mit einem wuchtigen Riff, das sogar zum Headbangen einlädt.

Mit „Umwelt“ und „Innenwelt“ stehen auf „End Terrain“ ruhige, experimentelle Interlude, bei denen sich genaues Hinhören empfiehlt. LOCRIAN schichten hier verstörende Sounds übereinander und erzeugen doch ein klares und bisweilen melancholisches Klangbild. Es sind diese zahlreichen Schichten, die LOCRIAN auf „End Terrain“ übereinander legen und somit ein Maximum an Worldbuilding erreichen. Es hätte ein verkopftes Album werden können, doch LOCRIAN sind eingespielt genug, um die Songs und die Story sprechen zu lassen. Die Grundideen der neun Songs sind verglichen mit „Return To Annihilation“ ein wenig simpler, doch die vielen Gitarren, Synthesizer, das Cello, die Vocals, sogar die Details im Drumming sind Farbtupfer, die erst das komplette Bild entstehen lassen und aus einer Skizze ein farbenprächtiges Ganzes werden lassen.

Punktgenaues Songwriting und eine kluge Dramaturgie: LOCRIAN betreiben auf „End Terrain“ Worldbuilding im großen Stil.
Somit ist es nicht verwunderlich, wie ausgewogen „End Terrain“ geworden ist. „Black Prisms Of Our Dead Age“ ist atmosphärisch-proggy und „In The Thrones Of Petrifaction“ pulsiert trotz aller Wut, mit der Terance Hannum verzweifelt schreit, und positioniert sich zwischen PELICAN und ZOMBI, nur viel mitreißender und zwingender. Dass diese vierzig Minuten so organisch, lebendig und dynamisch klingen, schafft das Trio nicht nur durch die immense Erfahrung in Songwriting und die Arrangements, auch Soundtechniker J. Robbins hat großen Anteil daran. Die neun Songs leben, atmen und sind dadurch, trotz all der futuristischen Ausrichtung, angenehm altmodisch: Es braucht kein Mastering bis an die Schmerzgrenze, um ein lautes Album zu erschaffen. Stattdessen braucht es Balance und Fingerspitzengefühl – „End Terrain“ hat beides, musikalisch und technisch.

Und am Ende ist das alles vorbei, sogar der eingangs zur Schau gestellte Defätismus. Mit dem triumphalen Finale besingen LOCRIAN zum letzten Mal eine dem Untergang geweihte Welt, und doch klingt „After Extinction“ beinahe friedlich und drückt auf die sprichwörtliche Resettaste – „End Terrain“ endet mit dem Gedanken, dass diese Welt vielleicht doch noch eine Chance hat, wenn auch nur mit anderen Bewohnern. Insofern ist „End Terrain“ irgendwie ein tröstliches Album und schenkt in aller Düsternis doch Hoffnung. Und vielleicht haben wir es bis zu einem gewissen Grad doch noch in der Hand, sofern wir endlich aufwachen und handeln. Insofern sollte dieses musikalische Mahnmal alle begleiten, die nicht auf die Zukunft scheißen. „End Terrain“ könnte LOCRIANs Sprungbrett heraus aus dem Underground sein und offenen Geistern, auch aus dem Bereich Post Rock und Progressive Rock, große Freude bereiten, ohne diejenigen zu enttäuschen, die die experimentelle, lärmende Seite der Band lieben. Keine Frage, „End Terrain“ ist LOCRIANs bisher bestes Album geworden.

Die Stoner Rock-Band HIGH DESERT QUEEN hat einen Labeldeal bei Magnetic Eye Records unterschrieben. Dieser Deal umfasst den Release gleich mehrerer Alben – das erste davon trägt den Titel “Palm Reader” und erscheint am 31. Mai 2024. Es ist nach “Secrets of the Black Moon” (2021) das zweite Album der US-amerikanischen Band aus Texas. Einen Höreindruck gewährt die zweite Single “Time Waster” bei YouTube.

Zuvor teilte die Gruppe den Vorab-Song “Ancient Aliens” bei YouTube.

Aufgenommen wurde die Platte von Casey Johns, Mix und Mastering übernahm Karl Daniel Lidén. Für das Artwork zeichnet PabloRR verantwortlich.

Klack—the midwest duo of Matt Fanale and Eric Oehler—are back with their fifth EP, Modern Production. Out on April 5th, the first single from the release is “Weight of the World,” a new beat song with a steady pace and sultry groove. A track that could easily sit beside the cheeriness of The Confettis or the danceability of Technotronic, there’s a lot to look forward to with this seven-track EP.

The track is littered with specific bright synthesizer bells that only 1980s aficionados will appreciate, alongside acquiescing vocals that emphasize the brutality of everyday life. It’s the weight of the world, it’s the way of the world.

After their upstanding 2018 release, Do You Klack?, that got a vinyl pressing by the Berlin-based underground label, Detriti, Klack have been consistent favorites for fans of EBM, synthpop and new beat. Modern Production builds on the mish-mash of slightly off-the-cuff dance genres that always remained left-field but have lasting weight nearly four decades later. Hailing from Poznań, Poland, the British-Polish multi-instrumentalist Vincenzo Wieczerzynski is poised to make a significantiimpact on the international synth music scene with his latest project, Chaos International. Wieczerzynski, firmly rooted in punk principles, brings a unique authenticity by using hand-played analogue electronic instruments, perfectly capturing that icy 80s cold wave synth sound.

Fresh from performing in Poland alongside the renowned Dark Wave band Clan Of Xymox, supporting Harsh Symmetry on their European tour, and engaging in collaborations with Lebanon Hanover, Wieczerzynski’s talent is obvious, with a promising career on the horizon. In fact, Chaos International already feels like it is well at home among a venerable lineup of Minimal Synth/Wave icons, both contemporary and classic, such as Absolute Body Control, Turquoise Days, Linear Movement, and Fad Gadget.

The project’s debut, a demo cassette EP, comes wrapped in artwork by Jean Lorenzo of Silent Em, with an inner photograph captured by Polar Noire. The EP has been meticulously mastered by Dea Hydra of Luminance. This exclusive release, accompanied by an A4 poster, is limited to a mere 50 copies. It is available through Die Blinden Records, a branch of the revered Belgian event organizers, Waveteef.

The opening track, Running, heavily channels Fad Gadget with its repetitive, minimal synth, droll vocals, and buzzy industrial effects. It sounds like a more introspective, retro, and almost 8-bit version of the kind of synthscapes explored by his contemporaries, setting the tone for the rest of the record that feels a weekend lost in a whirl of cathode rays and button mashing.

This vibe continues with the metallic vibration in Provos’ intro, a track with a dark, avant-garde edge and a spacey synth pad melody. The distressed vocals add a dramatic layer, resulting in a haunting yet danceable track.

A Deathly Hunger For War once again resonates with the spirit and political consciousness of Fad Gadget, delivering a poignant critique of global political maneuvers through various periods. This engaging protest anthem stands out with its distinctive lo-fi home recording essence, complemented by lyrics that nod respectfully to the D-Beat trailblazers, Discharge.

Four White Walls dips its toes into the chilling pool of minimalism, with its shadow-lurking sound and vocals that sound like they’re bargaining with the boogeyman—smells like early Depeche Mode spirit with that Tora! Tora! Tora! vibe from Speak and Spell, making you wonder if your speakers are haunted. Terms & Demands keeps the tempo anxious and danceable, channeling that unmistakable 80s Belgian beat. Then there’s The Garden, where the vocals float like a spectre in a misty soundscape.

New Direction throws a curveball with its poppy New Wave flair, sprinkled with the sounds of a factory during an alien invasion, while altogether feeling like the recreation of saturated Kodachrome-hued celluloid memories of several 80s sci-fi fantasy epic films left unmade. And just when you think you’ve heard it all, Culture struts in with a guitar riff straight out of a spaghetti western, layered over with ethereal vocals, a dash of industrial grit, and synths that sound like they’re beaming you up, all keeping pace with that insistent backbeat. It’s like Clint Eastwood in space boots—bizarrely delightful and oddly dance-worthy.

Die Progressive Death Metal-Band COGNITIVE veröffentlicht ihr fünftes Album: “Abhorrence” erscheint am 17. Mai 2024 via Metal Blade Records.

Den Titeltrack kann man sich jetzt schon anhören, COGNITIVE haben ein Video zu “Abhorrence” bei YouTube veröffentlicht.

“Abhorrence” entstand im Studio von COGNITIVE-Drummer AJ Viana, das Mastering kommt von Ryan Williams.

Den Albumtitel erklärt Gitarrist Rob Wharton so:

“Wir sind auf der Suche nach dem stärksten Track alle Songtitel durchgegangen. Die Wahl fiel auf ‘Abhorrence’. Alle sind gemein und grausam zueinander, die Welt ist schrecklich. Wir hatten einfach das Gefühl, dass der Titel das alles umfasst. Wir haben viel Zeit in diesen Song gesteckt, weil es so viele sich wiederholende Teile gibt, aber es geht hauptsächlich um Depressionen, Angstattacken und psychische Gesundheit.”

DORO hat 2023 ihr neues Studioalbum “Conqueress – Forever Strong And Proud” herausgebracht. Das reguläre Album enthält 14 Songs sowie – je nach Auflage – einen weiteren Bonus-Track: Während die CD die Cover-Version “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” spendiert bekommt, enthält die Doppel-LP das Outro “Warlocks And Witches”. Darüber hinaus erscheint die Platte als limitierte Doppel-CD sowie Vinyl-Box mit vier zusätzlichen Songs.

Mit einem animierten Musikvideo zu “Lean Mean Rock Machine” hat die Sängerin nun ein weiteres Stück als Single ausgekoppelt.

Ein Video zu “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” steht ebenfalls bei YouTube bereit. Mit dabei ist auch Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST).

Außerdem gibt es ein Video zum Song “Children Of The Dawn” – es ist der vierte Song, den DORO vor der Veröffentlichung der Platte im Netz vorstellt. Mit dem Duett “Bond Unending” hatte die Sängerin im September den dritten Vorgeschmack daraus veröffentlicht. Neben der Sängerin ist Sammy Amara (BROILERS) zu hören. Reinhörenkann man außerdem in  “Living After Midnight” bei YouTube, die  JUDAS PRIEST-Coverversion ist ein Duett mit deren Sänger Rob Halford. Man könnte natürlich in den Feuilleton-Tenor einstimmen und auch ein Loblied auf die Retro-Bewegung rund um die Schallplatte singen oder die Floskel „Vinyl Is Back“ bemühen, aber leider ist dem nicht ganz so! Als vor knapp 15 Jahren die allgemeine Nachfrage nach dem „schwarzen Gold“ zaghaft wieder anstieg, waren das auch für die Liebhaber goldene Zeiten, welche über die Durststrecke der 90er und 00er Jahre dem Vinyl die Treue gehalten haben. Plötzlich waren viele Alben parallel zur CD und Download auch wieder als Schallplatte erhältlich und das noch zu relativ humanen Preisen. Nach anfänglichen Zögern sprang die Industrie dann doch auf den Trend auf, verstopfte die wenigen noch aktiven Presswerke mit sinnlosen Reissues von alten Klassikern, kaperte den eigentlich an sich genialen Record Store Day und sorgt aktuell für eine explizite Preisexplosion, so das Vinyl zum Luxusgut für Rentner und hoch dotierte Pensionäre geworden ist! Gut für den, der sich bis dahin eine ordentlich kuratierte Sammlung noch aufbauen konnte und somit vorliegendes neues Buch über die Geschichte der Schallplatte beruhigt genießen kann. „Into The Groove“ besticht gleich mal in haptischer Form, denn das gebundene Buch im Kaffee-Tisch-Format bildet mittels Prägedruck auf dem Hardcover die Rillen einer Schallplatte nach. Nicht weniger prächtig die reichhaltige Bebilderung der 192 Seiten, welche aus rund 250 s/w, wie farbigen Fotos besteht. Die dazugehörigen Texte gehen zwar weniger in die Tiefe, aber dafür Breite und bieten einen umfassenden Überblick auf die Entwicklung des Vinyl-Kultes. Neben 5 großen Kapiteln über die allgemeine 75jährige Geschichte der Schallplatte, werden dazwischen legendäre Plattenläden, ikonische Cover und die wichtigsten Labels kurz vorgestellt. Diese Informationen sind natürlich zuerst an die Adresse von Neueinsteiger und jungen Leute gedacht, aber auch die alten Sammler dürften mit diesem wirklich sehr schön aufgemachten Buch ihre analoge Freude haben. Ich warte derweilen auf das Platzen der Blase und ein Fallen der Preise, denn über 40 Euro für eine einfache neue LP bezahle ich momentan definitiv nicht. Die für „Into The Groove“ veranschlagten 36 Euro sind es dagegen allerdings wirklich wert! (Marco Fiebag)

Portuguese Deathrock ensemble Louvado Abismo have emerged from the shadows and onto the international gothic rock stage with the announcement of their self-titled debut album, a compelling mixture of old-school post-punk and tenebrous darkwave elements. The album, scheduled for release on vinyl and digital formats on the 31st of May via Half Beast Records, with a CD release to follow, delves into the complex themes of schizophrenia and psychological disturbance.

The band is comprised of seasoned artists hailing from a spectrum of creative fields, infusing their collective with unparalleled depth and complexity. At the helm, Patrícia Andrade, a luminary in the theater world with her roots in Sinistro, captivates with her vocal prowess. Hugo Conim, with his intricate guitar stylings, Pedro Almeida, master of rhythmic beats on the drums, and Hélder Luís, who lays down the foundational bass lines, complete this quartet, each member contributing their distinct flair to the band’s unique sound.

Their debut album stands as a testament to Louvado Abismo’s ability to blend diverse dark music influences, drawing from Christian Death, Siouxsie, and the Banshees, and even elements from industrial pioneers like Godflesh, Swans, and Ministry. This eclectic works surprisingly well and reinvigorates the ’80s gothic aesthetic for contemporary audiences, creating a soundscape that is both nostalgic and innovative.

Their forthcoming album’s rhythmic foundation oscillates between precise drum arrangements and looser, danceable beats, complemented by the synthesized twang of guitars that capture the essence of ’80s glamour. The bass adds cinematic depth, weaving through the music to create a rich melange of sound that ranges from agonizing dissonance to ecstatic grooves.

Patrícia Andrade’s vocal performance, particularly in the lead single “Corrida Lenta,” is a standout feature, embodying the band’s exploration of complex themes through her theatrical intensity. Her voice, warm and ethereal, moves between powerful exclamations and tender whispers, guiding the listener through an immersive journey filled with surreal and formless thoughts.

“Corrida Lenta” itself is a dark and immersive track that epitomizes the band’s ominous take on gothic rock. The guitar work is sharp, cutting through the air with the precision of an ice storm, while Andrade’s vocals envelop the listener in a warm, gauzy resonance. This blend of elements recalls the haunting beauty of Deathrock classics by Mephisto Walz and Faith and the Muse, echoing the legacy of Christian Death.

The chorus of “Corrida Lenta” features an intricate overlay of tribal drums, evoking the heritage of traditional Portuguese culture, and progresses towards a Lynchian atmosphere. The track concludes with a poignant piano piece by guest musician Towkuhsh Razamod, reminiscent of Swans, encapsulating the song’s structural simplicity and emotional depth.

The music video for “Corrida Lenta” is a visual manifestation of the song’s thematic depth, presenting a warm, hallucinogenic reverie bathed in effervescent amber hues. It explores primal, primordial themes, akin to a cocoon within a dream, where shadow and light engage in a timeless dance. This shadowplay, set in a nebulous realm, enhances the song’s introspective and contemplative nature, inviting the viewer into a deep, introspective journey.

Ab Oktober 2024 sind SEPTICFLESH auf Tou und stellen ihr aktuelles Album “Modern Primitive” live vor. Begleitet werden sie von EQUILIBRIUM, SCAR OF THE SUN und OCEANS.

Die “Modern Primitive Tour 2024” umfasst 28 Konzerte in 13 Ländern. Für Deutschland sind acht Konzerte angekündigt, in der Schweiz und Österreich je eines.

Ein Stilbruch mit Ankündigung. Wie nahe Rapper ALLIGATOAH dem Metal steht, konnte man schon in der Vergangenheit immer wieder beobachten: Vom SLIPKNOT-Cover „Duality“ auf seinem „Fremde Zungen“-Album (2018) bis zum WACKEN-Auftritt 2022, wo er altbekanntes Material für die dortigen Hörgewohnheiten neu arrangierte, reichen die Querverweise, denen nun mit einem kompletten Studioalbum Rechnung getragen werden soll. Dass „off“ am Ende dennoch irgendwo zwischen den Stühlen sitzt, ist wohl die geringste aller Überraschungen und wohl auch Ausdruck so mancher verpassten Chance.

Denn so richtig einfinden will sich ALLIGATOAH in seine neue Umgebung noch nicht. Das fängt bei der Produktion an, die Schlagzeug und Gitarre tendenziell in die zweite Reihe mischt, um den Massenappeal nach Möglichkeit zu erhalten, selbst wenn der Künstler diesmal aggressiver zu Werke geht als gewohnt. Musikalisch versucht „off“ dagegen, die gewohnten Vibes mit härteren Akzenten zu vermählen: Sprechgesang trifft in „Ich fühle dich“ auf einen rockigen Refrain, während „Niemand“ durch seine Symbiose aus Rap und bratenden Gitarren fest im Nu Metal zu Hause ist.

Mit “off” sitzt ALLIGATOAH zwischen den Stühlen
Als Crossover-Versuch gelingen diese Experimente durchaus ordentlich, weil ALLIGATOAH natürlich auch in neuer Umgebung eingängige Melodien und lockeren Flow aus dem Ärmel zu schütteln weiß. Bestes Beispiel hierfür ist sicherlich die Lead-Single „So raus“ mit LIMP BIZKIT-Frontmann Fred Durst, wo der Musiker seine typische Handschrift fast ohne Abstriche in unbeschwertes Rock-Vokabular übersetzt. Das launige Thrash- und Death-Metal-Riffing in „Wer lacht jetzt“ untergräbt ALLIGATOAH derweil durch arg schwachbrüstige Screams, die kaum über Demo-Qualität hinauskommen.

Ambivalenter sind wohl nur die lyrischen Ergüsse des Rappers/Shouters ausgefallen, die zwischen satirisch-amüsant („Es kratzt“) und schwer zu ertragen liegen („Weisse Zähne“, „Scheissdreck“). Das bricht „off“ keineswegs das Genick, ist allerdings irgendwie symptomatisch für ein Werk, das sich nicht so recht entscheiden kann, was es nun sein möchte. Ein Gastsolo von Mille (KREATOR) in „Ich Ich Ich“ und ein paar härtere Spitzen machen eben noch kein Metal-Album. Glücklicherweise muss es das auch gar nicht sein, wenngleich „off“ auch als poppiges Crossover-Werk nicht gänzlich ohne Fettnäpfchen auskommt.

Der Tiefpunkt von “off” steht glücklicherweise am Ende
Immerhin liegt der Tiefpunkt mit dem Cover-Stück „Daylight“ ganz am Ende: Während ALLIGATOAH sich also im Finale anschickt, seine J.B.O.-von-Wish-Imitation zu üben, nehmen wir den im Plattentitel subtil mitschwingenden Rat vorzeitig zu Herzen, indem wir uns daran erinnern, dass ja auch unsere heimische Anlage eigentlich einen solchen Knopf haben müsste.

Folk Black Metal aus Kanada: SIG:AR:TYR stellen mit “Ascending the Stellar Throne” einen ersten Song vom kommenden Album vor.

Die neue Platte trägt den Titel “Citadel of Stars” und erscheint am 31. Mai 2024 via Hammerheart Records als Doppel-LP und Doppel-CD, die CD-Edition enthält zusätzlich das 2003er Demo “The Stranger”.

SIG:AR-TYR sind ein Projekt von Daemonskald, der Multiinstrumentalist hat das Album alleine eingespielt.
