British post-punk and gothic rock legends, The Mission, an ensemble of musicians featuring the talents of Wayne Hussey, Craig Adams, Simon Hinkler, and Alex Baum, are gearing up for a Spring 2024 tour that sees them embarking on a string of dates along the West Coast, culminating in a performance at Pasadena’s renowned Cruel World Festival on May 11th. Following this high-profile gig, the band extends their tour with three additional stops in Canada before crossing the Atlantic for their European leg.

“I’ve always liked the West Coast,” says vocalist/guitarist Wayne Hussey. “I even lived in SoCal for 4-5 years in the late ‘90s. I prefer to visit though than to live there.”

Excited to play Cruel World, Hussey is looking forward to sharing the bill with bands such as Duran Duran, Placebo, Ministry, Soft Cell, and Blondie.

“It’s a very eclectic bill… a lot of bands playing that I’d like to see,” he says. “It’s a shame we don’t generally get festival lineups like this in Europe. They tend to be more genre-specific. Hence, we usually just play goth/rock festivals which can be frustrating as I really don’t see us as exclusively fitting into any particular genre.”

The Mission are excited to embark on their West Coast journey, which will take them through colorful cities like Las Vegas, Portland, Sacramento, and San Francisco, among others. This follows their six-week tour across the country in 2023. The band is looking forward to playing on alternative festival stages and captivating audiences with their music as they travel through the diverse landscapes of the American West.

“There are some really beautiful drives up and down that coast, not that we’ll see ‘em traveling on a band bus,” he laughs. “Gotta say that the West Coast is generally among the best-looking audiences, so that’s reason enough, I’d say, for liking to tour there.”

(Coincidentally, Blood Brothers are playing at Los Angeles’ Viper Room on 27 April.)

Formed in 1985 by Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams, The Mission has made an enduring mark on the British alt-rock and post-punk scene. Despite hiatuses and lineup shifts, the band has remained a consistent presence, releasing ten studio albums to date.

In 2011, the original core trio—Hussey, Adams, and guitarist Simon Hinkler—reunited, sparking a powerful resurgence that continues unabated. Their 2016 release, Another Fall From Grace, is often praised as a pivotal moment in their career, described by Hussey as a bridge between The Sisters of Mercy’s First and Last and Always and The Mission’s seminal debut, God’s Own Medicine. Central to this revival is Hussey’s rediscovery of the electric 12-string guitar, a key element that he had temporarily set aside during the band’s interim years.

With new drummer Alex Baum now installed behind the kit, 2024 finds the band in fine form, with shows in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Dubai already confirmed, with possibly more to follow.

“I will be attempting to put a bunch of new tunes together for a new Mission album. It’s about time, don’t you think? …We’d like to get it ready for release in 2026 to commemorate our 40th anniversary. How the hell have we survived? I shouldn’t say that really, should I? It’s tempting fate, isn’t it?”

The Mission’s North American tour begins on April 28th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Nuovo Testamento will be support for all US dates.

Selten kommt es vor, dass eine Band ein One-Track-Album veröffentlicht. So geschehen bei den deutschen Dark/Horror Metallern THE VISION BLEAK, die mit “Weird Tales” einen Song heraus bringen, der in zwölf Kapitel unterteilt ist. Das siebte Studioalbum der Band ließ gute acht Jahre auf sich warten und man darf gespannt sein, wie sich “Weird Tales” anhört.

“Weird Tales” – easy Listening war gestern

Bei dem neuen Werk geht es um Gruselgeschichten, die eine Hommage an das gleichnamige amerikanische Pulp Magzin ist. Dieses erschien von 1923 bis in die 1950er mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Fantasy, Horror und Science Fiction. Autoren wie H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howards, Clark Anton Smith oder Roberrt Bloch gingen bei diesem Magazin zu Werke, während sich THE VISION BLEAK auf dem Album mit Lovecraft, Smith und auch Edgar Allan Poe. welcher in diesem Magazin nicht vor kam, beschäftigen.

Der Reigen beginnt mit dem Intro “Introduction”, welches mit elektronischen Elementen düster anfängt, ehe die Musiker mit ihren Instrumenten den Horror Metal zu zelebrieren beginnen, für den sie bekannt sind. Nahezu nahtlos ist der Übergang zu “Chapter II: In Rue d`Auseil”. Musikalisch decken THE VISION BLEAK eine große Bandbreite ab. Man pendelt zwischen Metal und Rock, Gothic und symphonischen Parts bis hn zu wilden Death und Black Metal Passagen. Interessant, dass das Duo Schwadorf und Konstanz auf all ihren Alben Themen aus dem Horror Genre verarbeiten, was sich auch auf “Weird Tales” fortsetzt.

THE VISION BLEAK überzeugen mit großer musikalischer Bandbreite

Eine wahre Offenbarung ist “Chapter VI: Mother Of Toads” mit seiner morbiden Grundstimmung und dem musikalischen Ausbruch in der Mitte des Titels. Im Allgemeinen kann man behaupten, dass die einzelnen Kapitel eher kurz gehalten sind und sich der Charme des Albums am besten verbreitet, indem man sich das Lied am Stück anhört. Melancholisch und dunkel ist der Grundtenor des Outputs und man wird inspiriert, sich mit großer Horrorliteratur auseinander zu setzen.

Gruselgeschichten im metallischen Gewand

Die Kapitel VII & IX kommen extrem düster daher, was die gezielt eingesetzten Keyboards einmal mehr unterstreichen. Ruhige Parts wechseln sich mit harschen Gitarrenriffs und tiefgehender Athmosphäre ab und nehmen den Hörer mit auf eine Reise in cineastische Komponenten. Die Vertonung von schaurigen Erzählungen und Geschichten gelingt dem deutschen Duo gut und macht Lust, noch etwas tiefer in die Horrorgeschichten einzutauchen.

THE VISION BLEAK dürften mit “Weird Tales” eine bunt gemischte Hörerschaft zufrieden stellen. Vorraussetzung dafür ist, den Track in einem durch zu hören und sich mit Musik und der Literatur ausseinander zu setzen. Denn dann entfacht das Album seine volle Wirkung.

Die Progressive Death-Doom Metal-Band KING BASTARD hat mit “From Whence They Came” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “It Came From The Void” (2022) das zweite Album des US-amerikanischen Trios aus Long Island, welches aus Gitarrist Mike Verni, Bassist und Sänger Arthur Erb sowie Drummer Matt Ryan besteht.

“Während unser erstes Album den Weltraum in Form einer katastrophalen Mission zu einem anderen Planeten erforschte, erforscht unser zweites Album die Zeit”, erklärt die Band. “Hierin liegt eine klangliche Chronik der Ursprünge der Menschheit von einem aggressiven, knöcheltretenden Affen zu einer kollaborativen, zerstörerischen Naturgewalt, die dem Planeten den Untergang bringt.”

A group of former Google DeepMind developers released the beta version of their AI music tool Udio on Wednesday. The tool has certainly lived up to the significant buzz it generated over the past few months in the form of all kind of rumours, surpassing many expectations with its capabilities.

Here’s how Udio works. To create a track, you first type in a prompt. If you’re not sure what to type try clicking on the dice icon to populate the prompt box with a random example prompt which consists of a combination of free-form text and tags. Based on that, Udio creates two different 33 second tracks.

As far as lyrics is concerned, you can enter your own or have them AI generated. Vocals are generated in various languages, including Japanese and Russian (not the most attractive choice we’d say these days).

Afterwards, you can further work on the track or extend it by adding extra parts. Another cool feature of Udio is remixing, which generates a subtle (or not so subtle) variation of an existing clip.

The tool is currently free, and users can create up to 1200 tracks per month.

Good to know: Udio does NOT generate songs using artists’ voices and under the hood the style reference is replaced with a set of relevant tags.

Future Udio developments

The developers are primarily focusing on improving sound quality (which is not optimal right now) and adding more languages for now: “Our v1 model is capable, but not perfect. We’re iterating quickly, and working on longer samples, improved sound quality, supporting more languages, and next-generation controllability. Stay tuned for more features and improvements coming soon.”

Eventually, more tools will become available for musicians, including the ability to easily add external tracks. And especially this last thing could be interesting to see what it will be able to do. Suppose you upload a demo and let the AI tool work further on it, present a chorus, if that is what you are missing etc..

So how does Udio sound for industrial music?

The below track was created with Udio (plus cut-edits in FL20) with no additional effects or elements added after rendering. In total 6 snippets were rendered and the whole took this user 45 minutes including the Udio rendering. The prompt used to generate the tracks was this one: “an electronic body music song, in the style of front 242, from 1986, with lyrics about a quite unusual dawn.”

Key is the quality of prompts you give so the tool can really well understand what you expect.

However, no matter how detailed your text prompts are, they cannot fully define an actual piece of music because the same text can describe an infinite number of possible audio tracks. That’s why to get close to the music idea you have in your head you might want to create multiple clips with identical prompts (and other settings). But even that is often not enough, that’s why the state of the prompt box doesn’t reset after you click Create. This makes it easy to queue more generations with or without tweaks.

If you don’t feel like continuing working on the same prompt, click Reset – the prompt box will reset to its default empty state. A good opportunity to try something different.

We are at the moment testing out the tool to see how far it can be stretched or if it stays rather limited in output, but the first results are rather promising.

Udio

Clear is that once Udio rolls out the full quality version of its tool that we will see a lot of AI only music projects launching ‘their songs’ on the market. We are not so sure that Spotify, Apple, Deezer will welcome a new flood of tracks into their system although Spotify said that they have no plans to introduce an outright ban on AI-generated music.

Die Sludge / Hardcore-Band HORNDAL hat mit “Head Hammer Man” ein neues Album parat. Es ist nach “Remains” (2019) und “Lake Drinker” (2021) das dritte Album der Schweden.

Mit dem Album erzählt die Band die bisher unbekannte Geschichte von Alrik Andersson, einem Gewerkschaftsführer aus der der Heimatstadt der Band, Horndal, um 1900, und seiner Rolle im Großen Streik. Zu der Geschichte von Andersson wird HORNDAL auch ein Buch schreiben, das das Album begleiten wird.

“Dies ist bei weitem unser ambitioniertestes Album, sowohl musikalisch als auch textlich”, erklärt die Band. “Wir begannen mit zwei Fragen: 1. Kann man ein Metal-Album mit Sounds machen, die von Jazz-Schlagzeugern aus den 60ern inspiriert sind? Offensichtlich! 2. Kann dieses Album die unerzählte Geschichte darüber erzählen, wie die Ereignisse in unserer verrosteten Heimatstadt beinahe einen Bürgerkrieg in Schweden ausgelöst hätten? Nein, man muss auch ein Buch schreiben. So we did.”

“Head Hammer Man” wurde von Simon Söderberg im Mayfire Studio gemixt und von Magnus Lindberg in den Redmount Studios gemastert. Erschienen ist das Album am 5. April 2024 via Prosthetic Records. Mit “Calling Labor” gibt es nun einen weiteren Video-Clip.

“”Calling Labor” handelt davon, wie der Held der Geschichte aus dem kleinen Horndal in Schweden ins Exil nach Amerika gezwungen wird und was er bei der Befragung im Auswanderungsbüro auf Ellis Island, New York, aussagt. Er wollte nichts weiter als einen Job und wurde später der Chef der Hammerschmiede von Columbia Steel in Chicago”, erklärt die Band.

Vorab gibt es zudem einen Video-Clip zu “Blacklisted“, zu welchem die Band sagt:

“Als der gewalttätige Große Streik von 1909 vorbei war, hatte es unser unbesungener Held geschafft, die Arbeitsplätze und den Lebensunterhalt seiner Arbeitskollegen zu retten. Aber nicht seine eigene. Er stand in ganz Schweden auf der schwarzen Liste und wurde ins Exil gezwungen. Er floh mit seiner Frau und seinen kleinen Kindern über den Atlantik. Die Musik ist so schwer und düster wie der Text.”

Background/Info: “Let Go” is the twenty-third full length album by KMFDM. Driven by Sascha Konietzko, Lucia Cifarelli, Andy Selway and Andee Blacksugar the new work was preceded by a few singles and clips.

But I can’t say this is a ‘typical’ album from the band as it clearly explores different paths. Some parts are reminding me of Lords Of Acid while other passages are accentuated by heavier, guitar, solos. One of the songs features a short guest appearance by Rapper MC Ocelot.

+ + + : KMFDM remains a very unique band in its genre; this is Crossover with a perfect balance between guitar and electronics which create a true osmosis but especially during the beginning songs of the album. KMFDM also became a bit more Rock-driven and even into a kind of Industrial-Punk reminding me of Lords Of Acid ( “Turn The Light On”). The already familiar title song and album opener remains one of the best cuts. But my personal favorite one is “Next Move” which is one of the most powerful and ‘classical’ KMFDM-cuts.

– – – : Definitely not the best and most inspiring album of this band. They give me the feeling to have tried something different and didn’t s쳮d.

Die US-amerikanische Doom Metal-Band DRIFT INTO BLACK hat mit “Voices Beneath the Rubble” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist bereits das fünfte Album der 2017 gegründeten Band aus New Jersey

“Voices Beneath the Rubble” wurde von Matheus Manente gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Ivan Stan ausgestattet. Erscheinen wird das Album am 28. Juni 2024 via Black Lion Records. Vorab gibt es einen Video-Clip zum Titeltrack.

Die Symphonic Metal-Band HYPERSONIC hat mit “Veil Of Insanity” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Kaosmogonia” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Fallen Melodies” (2011) und “Existentia” (2016) das dritte Album der Sizilianer und ist am 12. April 2024 via Rockshots Records erschienen.

Der Titel, eine Verschmelzung von “Kaos” und “Cosmos”, steht für die duale Natur des Menschen – chaotisch und geordnet. Das Album erforscht demnach das Zusammenspiel von Chaos und Kosmos und befasst sich mit der Komplexität menschlicher Emotionen, der Reflexion über das Leben und den Auswirkungen historischer Ereignisse.

Mit “Mother Earth” gibt es schon einen ersten Video-Clip. Der Song reflektiert über die zyklische Natur der Geschichte und die unbestreitbare Kraft der Rache der Natur.

Die Black Metal-Band DYSTOPIA hat nach “Giftige Woorden” mit “Eerst Enkelen, Toen Honderden, Toen Duizenden” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “De verboden diepte I: Veldslag op de rand van de wereld” veröffentlicht. Es ist das vierte Album des niederländischen Quartetts, welches aus Dennis Onsia, Cees de Wit, Rick Jongman und Thomas Cochrane (VETRAR DRAUGURINN), der das Album auch gemixt hat, besteht. Gemastert wurde das Album von Brad Boatright.

Die Post-Metal-Band O ZORN! hat nach “Slow Mood” mit “Features” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Vermillion Haze” veröffentlicht.

“In diesem Song geht es um die Bedeutung von Selbstvertrauen und Vertrauen in sich selbst”, sagt Sänger Bill Kielty. “Wenn man ständig an sich selbst und seinen Fähigkeiten zweifelt, wird man sich immer in einem Zustand der Verwirrung befinden. Bei mir selbst hat diese Verwirrung dazu beigetragen, dass ich ein Leben lang aufgeschoben habe. Das kann Beziehungen, Geschäfte und andere Lebensbereiche stark belasten, in denen der Fortschritt dadurch behindert wird, dass man nicht in der Lage ist, die Dinge rechtzeitig oder überhaupt zu Ende zu bringen. Prokrastination ist der natürliche Mörder von Chancen.”

“Vermillion Haze” ist nach “Your Killer” (2020) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Long Beach und ist am 15. März 2024 via Hard Drugs / Seeing Red Records erschienen. Produziert wurde das Album von Ryan Boesch (u.a. für ANDREW WK tätig).

Mit “Never Saw It Coming” gibt es seit Januar bereits einen animierten Video-Clip. Dieser handelt vom Verlust eines langjährigen Freundes, der nicht in der Lage war, die Schuldgefühle und die Trauer über den Verlust zweier Familienmitglieder durch COVID-19 innerhalb weniger Tage zu überwinden.

“Ein Arbeitskollege, den ich als engen Freund betrachtete, nahm sich während der Pandemie das Leben”, erklärt Sänger Bill Kielty. “Außerhalb der Arbeit lebten wir in verschiedenen Welten und wussten nur das über ihn, was er am Arbeitsplatz erzählte. Das ist im Leben ganz normal. Wir alle haben Beziehungen außerhalb unseres unmittelbaren Umfelds, aber wenn man über Jahre hinweg acht bis zehn Stunden am Tag mit jemandem verbringt, sollte man meinen, dass man ein gutes Gefühl dafür hat, wer diese Person im Leben ist. Als ich den schrecklichen Anruf erhielt, in dem mir sein Tod mitgeteilt wurde, war ich außer mir vor Trauer. Ich fühlte mich buchstäblich, als hätte ich einen Bruder verloren. In den darauffolgenden Tagen, in denen ich nach weiteren Informationen darüber suchte, was passiert war und warum, erfuhr ich von vielen seiner engsten Freunde und Familienmitglieder, dass er als Kind an einer schweren Geisteskrankheit gelitten hatte, die sich auch als Erwachsener immer wieder bemerkbar machte. Das konnte ich einigermaßen nachvollziehen, denn von Zeit zu Zeit wurde ich Zeuge eines merkwürdigen Verhaltens, aber er war ein bisschen wie ein Gelehrter, so dass ich es einfach als ein bisschen seltsam abtat. Der eigentliche Schlag kam, als ich erfuhr, dass er in den Monaten vor seinem Tod Meth geraucht hatte und psychotische Anfälle hatte. Er wurde paranoid, hörte Stimmen, sah Dinge und hatte Zusammenstöße mit dem Gesetz. Ich hatte keine Ahnung, wie ernst seine Situation war, aber alle anderen schienen es zu wissen.”

Happy Birthday DEAD HEAD! 35 Jahre lang werken die Niederländer in nahezu unveränderter Besetzung (einzig Bassist und Sänger Ralph de Boer (BODYFARM) gehört nicht zum Original-Line-Up – schon an ihrem Thrash Metal. Und so lange rittern sie auch um etwas mehr Anerkennung. Denn trotz durchgehend ordentlicher Genre-Releases (u.a. sieben full-length Alben) hat es die 1989 gegründete Band nie ganz nach vorne geschafft. Die Jubiläums-EP “Shadow Soul” wird daran auch nichts ändern, aber zumindest ist der Fokus wieder etwas mehr auf diese Urgesteine des niederländischen Thrash Metals gerichtet.

DEAD HEAD überzeugen nur, wenn sie genug Tempo und Aggressivität in die Waagschale werfen
Auf “Shadow Soul” haben DEAD HEAD eine für eine EP beachtliche Summe von acht Songs aufgenommen. Und schon mit dem Opener “Litany of the Weak” legt die Band ganz gut vor, als dass der Song mit seiner Aggressivität und seinem Tempo punkten kann. Vorzüge, die in weiterer Folge nicht jedem Song eigen sind. Bereits das folgende “Serpents of Fame” ist etwas mauer und “Caverns of Fate” dann gar etwas plump und sperrig. Da hätte man sich von den Routinieres durchaus mehr Fingerspitzengefühl erwarten dürfen.

Gesanglich liefert Ralph de Boer eine sichere Leistung ab, wenngleich der Gesangsstil eine deathigere Note hat. Mitunter passt das ganz gut, wenn wie in “The Age of Hype” ordentlich nach vorne geballert wird. Doch würde man sich eine leicht variablere Note bei den Vocals wünschen.

Auch wenn “Shadow Soul” erneut nicht den Befreiungsschlag aus dem Underground-Dasein für DEAD HEAD darstellt, so ist die EP eine nette Geburtstags-Scheibe, die den Thrash Metal zumindest phasenweise gut zur Geltung bringen kann.

Mit “When Time Becomes Loss” wird in wenigen Wochen das neue Album der Progressive Thrash Metal-Band HEMOTOXIN erscheinen. Es ist das vierte Album der US-amerikanischen Band aus Pittsburgg, die maßgeblich von Michael Chavez betrieben wird. Zugearbeitet wurde dem Musiker von Drummer Scott Fuller (ANNIHILATED, ERRORGEIST, Ex-ABYSMAL DAWN, Ex-MORBID ANGEL) sowie den Gitarristen Tony Barhoum (LEGIONARY, CONDITION CRITICAL, CHAOS SANCTUARY), Donnie Small (LACERATION, Ex-EMBRYONIC DEVOURMENT) und Andrew Lee (RIPPED TO SHREDS, HOUKAGO GRIND TIME, AZATH), der das Album auch gemixt hat. Das Mastering lag in den Händen von Justin Weis.

Mit “Turbulent” wird am 19. April 2024 ihr neue Album der Hard Rock / Grunge-Band NEVER ELECTED erscheinen. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Washington DC. Zuvor hat die Band mit “Down Too Long” (2017) eine EP veröffentlicht. Mit “One Of These Days” ist nun ein Lyric-Video verfügbar.

“Turbulent” wurde gemeinsam mit Farhad “Zink” Hossain im Zinkferd Studio aufgenommen, von Matty Pellets gemixt und von Jason Stanley gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Sänger und Bandmitbegründer Sujit Kumar (AARON HOLT): Das Cover besteht aus drei Ebenen, auf denen ein Kind, ein wütend schreiender Mann und etwas zu sehen ist, das wie ein von einer künstlichen Intelligenz generiertes Ich aussieht, das die beiden nur anschaut, ohne jegliche Gefühle oder Emotionen.

Emerging from the frozen epoch of the pandemic with a palpable sense of renewal, Sweden’s It’s For Us makes a resounding return with their latest album, “Out Of Time.” This record melds ethereal vocals with brooding melodies into hauntingly rich tones that resonate with deep emotion. It draws parallels from The Smiths and The Jesus and Mary Chain, blending ’60s pop sensibilities with the creative essence of acts like Lush and Black Tambourine. The album channels the retro vibe of The Shangri-Las its distinct Wrecking Crew-esque pop-driven sound.

Amidst a creative hiatus prompted by significant personal and global changes, It’s For Us has refined their approach, seamlessly fusing the introspective depth and lush sonics of shoegaze with the sharp, melodic structures of modern post-punk. This self-produced album not only broadens the band’s already compelling oeuvre but also redefines it, offering an invigorating glimpse into the band’s evolved artistry from cascading crystalline anthems like “Stay” and “You Are The One” released in what seems like a previous lifetime, albeit, four years ago.

With each track, It’s For Us invites listeners into a realm where the echoes of goodbye linger, crafting a mosaic of sound that is as timeless as it is poignant.

Opening the album is the title track Out Of Time, which speaks of enduring companionship amidst hardships, acknowledging the capturing of hearts and the intertwined roles of guide and guided. The desire for continued togetherness is expressed despite the inevitable passing of time, with a sense of gratitude for safety and presence, and a final farewell as time runs out.

The pop sadness Sandy Beaches extends an invitation to a loved one, offering solace in times of fear or confusion. Despite feeling out of place in a world of conventional beauty and joy, there’s acknowledgment of bravery and beauty in uniqueness. The reassurance that being an artist or poet is valuable, even in loneliness, resonates throughout the track.

Hit The Ground asserts an unyielding, resilient spirit against the threat of falling. Embracing a history of overcoming obstacles, the singer refuses to succumb to fear, embodying strength born from adversity and the resolve to rise above expectations. I’ve Got Good News conveys a mixture of excitement and reservation regarding the future. There’s a palpable tension, however, surrounding the notion of forgiveness and its elusive nature. The absence of support during significant moments contrasts with the desire for acknowledgement.

A personal journey marked by pivotal decisions and inner conflict is depicted in If It Wasn’t For You. Transitioning from one chapter to the next, there’s a recognition of flaws and the struggle to break free from cyclical patterns. Despite a sense of isolation, there’s a yearning for newfound freedom and self-discovery, tempered by the influence of others. Defiance and determination is the theme of Only The Brave, celebrating unconventionality. It is a celebration of the assertion of one’s identity with unwavering authenticity, inviting others to engage and provoke change.

The visceral Ballad of the Body grapples with the weight of memories and the bitterness of regret. Each touch, each kiss, now burdensome, paints a picture of internal turmoil and self-reproach as one confronts their own actions and the pain inflicted by others, yearning to break free from the suffocating grip of the past. Likewise, the intense Year of The Wolf also grapples with memories and the desire for freedom. Despite longing for companionship, there’s a simultaneous pull towards independence and self-discovery, symbolized by the call of the wild.

A sense of entrapment and longing for escape within the complexities of a relationship takes centre stage in Trapped.  Sometimes the weight of unresolved issues proves too much to bear, and the simplicity of nature too irresistible. Amidst feelings of sadness and uncertainty, there’s a poignant questioning of deservingness and a yearning for direction. Finally, Holiday Is Over shows a determination not to be swayed by fear, embracing whatever challenges may come. There’s a cautious acknowledgment of the need to remain vigilant and adaptable, even in times of relative ease.

Die Sludge Metal-Band BORER hat einen Labeldeal bei Landmine Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird die Band aus Neuseeland ihr neues Album “Bag Seeker” am 10. Mai 2024 veröffentlichen. Es ist das erste Album der 2021 in Christchurch gegründeten Band, die zuvor mit der EP “Priest Thrower” (2021) debütierte.

It all began in a music production class at the College of Southern Nevada, where Will Kim (Sung) and Julian West (Spektor) joined forces with Holly Haywood (æther) to form the psychedelic band Luxury Furniture Store. As 2020 unfolded, the band embarked on a darker, more ethereal path, navigating lineup changes and new releases. They opted to forego a live drummer, sticking with their core members.

Renamed Past Self in 2023, their fusion of Korean and English lyrics, alongside swirling guitar tones, has earned them a dedicated following in the local Las Vegas music scene.

Their latest offering, titled 녹슨 칼 (pronounced nogk-seun kahl) or Rusty Knife, delves into the theme of feeling ostracized and obscure within society, and the journey of learning to embrace such a state.

The song speaks of a long-time friendship turned sour, likening it to a rusty knife that continues to cause harm. Despite pretending not to notice the flaws, the pain persists. The speaker reflects on the exhaustion and hunger caused by this toxic relationship. The repeated refrain emphasizes the metaphor of the rusty knife, symbolizing the enduring toxicity.

The video, masterfully directed by Of Sun Media, unveils a gripping tale set within the eerie confines of a haunted house. As the gang navigates its shadowy corridors, viewers are drawn into a mysterious realm where ghostly apparitions weave a hypnotic spell, luring an unsuspecting visitor into their midst. Yet, amidst the haunting melodies and spectral allure, one wonders: is it an enchanting spell or a treacherous trap awaiting the unwary?

Past Self’s unique blend of aural aesthetics, d믭 “K-Goth,” conjures the spirit of iconic bands like The Cure, The Horrors, and My Bloody Valentine. With performances alongside notable acts such as Mareux, Drab Majesty, and Twin Tribes, they’ve carved a distinct niche in an increasingly diverse scene. Die Death-Doom Metal-Band GREH hat mit dem Lyric-Video zu “Illusional Cenotaph” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Dysphoric Devotion” veröffentlicht. Der Song sei eine ergreifende Reflexion, die der Notlage der Soldaten in den Wirren des Konflikts einen Spiegel vorhält. Er bringt die Verzweiflung und Resignation derjenigen zum Ausdruck, die in den Krieg ziehen, wohl wissend, dass sie auf dem Schlachtfeld ein unausweichliches Schicksal erwartet. Der Track beschwört die düstere Realität von Soldaten herauf, die sich ihre Zukunft als bloße Namen auf anonymen Grabsteinen vorstellen, letztlich reduziert auf vergessene Leichen. Er trauert um die Nachwehen des Krieges, wo nur ein steinerner Kenotaph als düstere Erinnerung an ihre schrecklichen Entscheidungen und die zahllosen Leben, die für eine sinnlose Sache verloren gingen, steht.

Im Februar ist mit “Thy Breath Not Mine” eine erste Vorab-Single des Albums erschienen. Der Song spiegelt eine Nahtoderfahrung wider und artikuliert den schmalen Grat zwischen Leben und Tod und endet mit einer tiefgreifenden Erkenntnis des Nichts.

“Dysphoric Devotion” ist nach zwei EPs das erste Album des deutschen Trios aus Karlsruhe und soll im Winter 2024 erscheinen.

Die Post-Black Metal / Dark Hardcore-Band MACHUKHA hat mit “Mochari” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der ukrainischen Band und handelt von der Widerstandsfähigkeit, als dass es um die menschliche Fähigkeit, Grausamkeiten zu überstehen und Tag für Tag weiterzuleben, geht.

“Mochari” wurde gemeinsam mit Jan Oberg (EARTH SHIP, GRIN) im Hidden Planet Studio aufgenommen und von Jack Shirley (u.a. für WIEGEDOOD tätig) in den The Atomic Garden Studios gemixt und gemastert. Erscheinen wird das Album am 7. Juni 2024 via Consouling Sounds. Vorab gibt es mit “Bezpliddya” einen Video-Clip.

“Sängerin Natalya schrieb den Text, nachdem sie zum ersten Mal einen Anfall unbekannter Ursache erlitten hatte”, erklärt die Band. “Der erste Anfall war ein extrem schmerzhafter, bei dem sich ihr ganzer Körper verkrampfte und zuckte, gefolgt von stundenlanger Unfähigkeit, sich zu bewegen. Eine Zeit lang litt sie weiter unter diesen Anfällen, die sie an allem anderen hinderten, insbesondere an der Teilnahme am gesellschaftlichen Leben. Der Text beschreibt die Gefühle, die man in einer solch schwierigen Situation empfindet – nicht in der Lage zu sein, aufgrund einer körperlichen und/oder geistigen Krankheit voll und ganz zu leben und die Ursache der Krankheit nicht zu kennen.”

LINKIN PARK veröffentlichten am 12. April 2024 ein “Best Of”-Album unter dem Titel “Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000-2023)”. Zum Release teilte die Gruppe nun einen Visualizer-Clip zum Song “QWERTY” bei YouTube.

Darauf enthalten ist auch der bisher unveröffentlichte Song “Friendly Fire“; er entstand während der Aufnahmen zum siebten Album “One More Light” (2017).

Brad Delson erklärt zum Song:

„‘Friendly Fire‘ war immer einer unserer Lieblingssongs aus den ‘One More Light‘-Sessions. Irgendetwas daran war jedoch nicht ganz rund, daher beschlossen wir damals, ihn vorerst zurückzustellen, obwohl er kurz vor Fertigstellung war. Als wir uns auf die Suche nach einem unveröffentlichten Track für unsere Greatest-Hits-Sammlung machten, war ich einfach nur überwältigt von der Kraft des Songs – seinem Storytelling, dem Gesang, den Klanglandschaften. Ich dachte bei mir: ‘Vielleicht waren wir damals doch weiter, als uns bewusst war.‘ Wir haben uns zusammengesetzt und einige der fehlenden Teile miteinander verbunden, die sich – aus welchem Grund auch immer – während der Aufnahmen von ‘One More Light‘ nicht offenbart hatten. CITIZEND ist der Name des neuen Projekts von Gitarrist Emil Gustavsson (ex-OROCHEN) und Multi-Instrumentalist sowie Produzent Otto Nilsson. Gemeinsam plant das Duo die Veröffentlichung iher Debüt-EP “The Spiral” via Majestic Mountain Records. Einzelheiten hierzu sind zwar noch nicht bekannt, mit dem Cover-Song “Bad Moon Rising” (CREDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL) gibt es aber schon jetzt einen Vorgeschmack als Lyric-Video bei YouTube.

Die Wahl des Stücks kommentiert Emil Gustavsson:

“Dieser Song hat seit meiner Kindheit einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen, und sein Text wirkt heute mehr denn je nach. Es war das Lied, mit dem unsere Reise begann, sowohl was den Kontext als auch was das Konzept angeht.”

Musikalisch sollen sich die fünf Songs der EP zwischen Americana, Post Rock und Post Metal bewegen.
