19.04.2024 - The Journey Between Life and Death — Listen to Los Angeles Dark Post-Punk Project The Sweet Kill’s Latest Album “Nowhere”

Cold winter’s journey
Oh your soul keeps bleeding on
Through the storm and the war
You’re going home, into the unknown
The Sweet Kill, led by the singular Pete Mills, is a formidable gothic-rock powerhouse melding a cinematic blend of cold wave synths, atmospheric guitars, minimal drums, and melodic bass with his own velvety baritone. Evoking a spacious atmosphere that evokes the misty moors, Gothic manors, and tree-lined forests of romantic novels, Mills channels romantic sorrow that resonates with the echoes of Sisters of Mercy, The Cult, and London After Midnight.

The latest album from The Sweet Kill, Nowhere, delves into profound existential questions about the soul’s state between two realms: Are we perpetually adrift in the ether, or are we always anchored, never truly lost? The records’ narrative poetically captures the essence of grief as love with no destination. It portrays life as a cycle where some souls may return for another experience while others linger, forever haunting our world, trapped in the nowhere.

“Nowhere questions the final analysis of the soul’s journey between life and death, are we eternally floating in the ether or are we never lost and always found?” says Mills.

Beneath the chilly moonglow, one contemplates the allure of the Forbidden, driven by a deep, unnamable yearning. In life’s grand opera, hearts are drawn to secretive duets, hidden from the world’s view, where forbidden romances flourish like exotic, concealed flowers. The song’s lyrics, ‘I know you’re craving; we were outcasts all along,’ resonate with those drawn to the allure of the forbidden. The video, featuring the haunting voice of Pete Mills, guides us through this mysterious realm, shedding light on a shadowy adventure. Here, outcast protagonists navigate their intense yet prohibited desires, finding themselves in a dark, irresistible love, exiled in their own paradise.

Next comes Undead. In an endless night shrouded in gloom, cursed beings from the Undead realm grapple with a timeless romantic dilemma. Their love, unfolding like a silent opera against the backdrop of mortality’s relentless advance, threatens to separate them from their mortal beloveds. Their heartbeats resonate with a mournful melody as they face a harrowing decision: either damn their loved ones to eternal night to save them from death, or watch them perish. Oscar Wilde’s reflection, “The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death,” underscores the profound struggle of the Undead, caught between tender love and icy despair, in a melancholy dance where love challenges the bounds of life and death, yet remains bound by fate.

“The romantic seduction of vampires has prevailed until the dawn of this present day,’ says Mills about the next track, Queen. “This arousal poetically mirrors a bond where both lovers dissolve into one universal entity as their love conquers all. This world remains governed by the dark reign of this gothic King and Queen.”

The powerhouse anthem Evil was forged in the fiery crucible of confronting personal demons head-on. The song delves into the darkest corners of the soul, exploring the haunting depths before ascending into a cathartic embrace of its own end. The song masterfully transforms inner turmoil into a compelling celebration of release and redemption, marking a bold exploration of the shadows that reside within us all.

Kicking off with a chilling horror movie motif, Creeper is an anguished plea emerging from the depths of sleep-induced paralysis. As the conscious mind surrenders to slumber, the body becomes a prisoner to night terrors. The track vividly portrays the turmoil of fear and suppressed emotions that run wild in the dead of night, painting a haunting picture of the struggles faced at bedtime.

Destroy heralds triumph and liberation from intense internal conflicts. It confronts the paradox that the greatest battles are endless and that sometimes, surrender is the path to victory. The song powerfully explores the toll exacted to attain mental peace, allowing one to face the world with renewed conviction and confidence. Through visceral storytelling, “Destroy” vividly depicts the raw, lived reality on the far side of addiction, offering a resonant perspective on recovery and renewal.

Nowhere and Alive are tracks that explore the emotional landscapes carved out by loss and remembrance. The former confronts the grief that accompanies the death of a loved one, suggesting that while our bodies may perish, our energy remains infinite. The song proposes that the soul survives death, possibly manifesting as either a peaceful presence or a restless specter among the living, emphasizing the immortal nature of spirit and memory despite mortality.

Alive, on the other hand, captures the poignant moment when the essence of a deceased loved one returns, impacting those they once knew. This powerful reconnection raises profound questions about the afterlife—be it heaven, purgatory, or hell—and prompts a reflection on the enduring ties that transcend the physical world. Both songs address the deep emotional responses elicited by these spiritual encounters, underscoring the belief that while death is inevitable, the suffering it brings can be transcended.

The tumultuous emotions of a relationship on the brink of collapse take the stage in Explode, embodying the tension between knowing it’s time to part ways and the desperate cling to companionship. The song captures the rawness of realizing a love has run its course while grappling with the fear of solitude. It portrays this conflict with a mix of power and poignancy, mapping the internal struggle of holding on to the familiar to stave off the void of loneliness.

Paying homage to a former bandmate who tragically ended her own life, Divide grapples with the feelings of helplessness in the face of another’s suffering and the haunting regret of failing to intervene. This track poignantly captures the emotional and moral dilemmas that come with loss and the human condition. “The Great Divide” explores the fierce inner conflict between the forces of good and evil within us. It contrasts the “Sweet”—the righteous path that one is meant to follow—with “The Kill,” which represents the alluring pull of darker impulses.

Step 1 is a raw outcry for escape from the grip of loneliness, heartbreak, and addiction. The song delves into the deceptive comfort of “one more hit,” an anthem familiar to those entangled in addiction’s hold. It reflects on the paradox of solutions that seem to make sense when the problem itself is misunderstood, a cycle that perpetuates unending suffering. The track captures the profound struggle until a glimmer of hope—a light at the end of the tunnel—finally appears, suggesting a path out of the darkness.

Finally, this emotional roller coaster of an album concludes with Goodbye, a poignant tribute to a lover who’s gone but not forgotten, probing the haunting question: is it ever truly too late to say goodbye? It touches on the deep sorrow and confusion that follow the tragic losses of icons to addiction, overdose, or suicide, capturing the struggle of those left behind to understand the senseless endings.

Nowhere, out now under Young & Cold Records in Germany and Shadow Zone Records in the USA, is available on digital streaming, CD and black marble vinyl.

Nowhere by The Sweet Kill

Pete Mills, initially a guitarist, revolutionized his musical approach upon harnessing his distinctive vocal talents, which he chillingly refers to as “a creepy instrument.” By 2021, this evolution gave rise to The Sweet Kill, a venture aimed at connecting with those navigating life’s darker moments. The 2022 release of their album “Darkness” established The Sweet Kill as a significant presence in the genre, signaling Mills’ transformation and ushering in a fresh era for darkwave.

Operating out of his own studio, Shadow Zone Sound, Mills takes the helm in recording and producing all of The Sweet Kill’s work.

April 2024. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Stéphanie Bujold.

19.04.2024 - Austin Post-Punk Troupe Single Lash Pay Tribute to the Commedia Dell’Arte in Their Video for “Sugar Armadillo”

Did you feel afraid to whisper?
It’s such cold comfort but it’s real
The weight of close encroaching absence
Too paralyzed to make appeals
Commedia dell’arte is a form of Italian theatre characterized by masked “types” and improvised performances based on scenarios. Originating in the 16th century, it features stock characters like the crafty servant Arlecchino and the foolish Pantalone, blending slapstick comedy with satirical themes, influencing European dramatic traditions and modern improv comedy.

Austin-based ensemble Single Lash pays tribute to the Old World theatrical tradition with Sugar Armadillo,  off of their latest LP Ladida, as well as “stylistic North Star Steve Strange of the band Visage.”

Don’t be fooled, however: this heaping spoonful of saccharine goth guitar pop hides a bitter pill. The acerbic lyrics delve into a profound emotional conflict, marked by feelings of isolation and rejection through stifling absence and paralysis. One is unable to seek intimacy, yet remains tenaciously attached to life. As previous affections fade into faint infatuations and life’s chill deepens, the speaker endures a lingering, albeit fading, grief but steadfastly maintains their grip on existence.

Sugar Armadillo is a post-punk anthem tinged with melancholy, striking a chord with anyone nursing a broken heart. Admirers of 1980s underground icons like Orange Juice and Catherine Wheel will find much to appreciate in its catchy, introspective depths.

In the music video directed with flair by Faiza Kracheni, Nadeau transforms a personal trauma into a grotesque, carnival-like spectacle of absurd pantomime. Donning makeup reminiscent of the late Steve Strange and bringing to mind Ashes To Ashes-era Bowie, he portrays a narrative of falling in love, encountering a mischievous cat, enduring electric shocks, and ultimately collapsing before an unforgiving audience.

Faiza Kracheni’s directorial approach lends a charmingly handcrafted quality to the project, grounding the loftier themes with a touch of simplicity. The video, imbued with the communal spirit of a traveling theatre troupe, is brought to life through extraordinary passion and effort. It renders Sugar Armadillo with the disheveled grandeur of a vampire drifting through the ages, combining the ephemeral with the eternal.

Nadeau suggests that these exaggerated performances are not unlike the daily emotions and personas we adopt. This reflection holds a particular resonance for artists, who often mine their deepest and most private experiences for public consumption. Through this lens, the video blurs the line between authentic selfhood and artistic portrayal, challenging viewers to consider the fluid boundary between genuine and performed identities.

Watch the video for “Sugar Armadillo”:

Dispensing melodic soundscapes that shimmer yet are laced with a biting humor, Austin’s Single Lash offers a guitar-fueled, icily intellectual form of art-rock. Their sound, reminiscent of The Chameleons, Japan, The Teardrop Explodes, Belle and Sebastian, and Echo and the Bunnymen, originated as an art school project helmed by singer-songwriter Nicolas Nadeau. The band has since evolved into a formidable quartet, celebrated for their emotionally charged live shows.

19.04.2024 - Los Angeles Darkwavers Male Tears Debut Video for “Regret 4 Nothing”

You can’t believe what they say, they’ll treat you like a fool
It hurts me just to watch you follow everything they do
Well if you go out looking, you’ll find something so pure
You’re leaving me with nothing till I come down from the cure
Just a year after the release of their darkly intense album Krypt, LA-based band Male Tears has made a stunning return with an entirely new sound. The group has now expanded to include four members, with vocalist James Edward at the forefront, steering their musical direction from dark wave to high-energy Italo disco.

This transformation unfolds in the dimly lit nooks of a nightclub bathed in deep reds and magentas. Here, the charismatic James Edward takes center stage, adorned with ruffles and makeup that nod to icons like Steve Strange and Robert Smith. His presence is commanding, offering a masterclass in the captivating allure of New Romanticism.

Regret 4 Nothing, a standout track from Male Tears’ latest album Paradisco, pulls the band from the dark depths of goth into a whirlwind of ecstatic disco fever. The song is filled with sweeping orchestral hits, relentless disco rhythms, and a cascade of synth arpeggios. It wraps listeners in a cozy blanket of sweet nostalgia and renewed romantic flair, with a sound that honors legends like Miko Mission, Ken Laszlo, Lisa Lisa, Exposé, and The Smiths. This track is a bold departure that celebrates the euphoric highs of disco while nodding respectfully to its synth-pop predecessors.

While the music pulses with an ecstatic energy, Male Tears’ lyrics retain the gothic essence they’re known for, wrestling with external forces and inner chaos. The protagonist feels overwhelmed by the turmoil around them yet stands firm, unapologetic for their past and unyielding to remorse. They watch as others naïvely follow the crowd and express sorrow over the world’s harsh realities for people like them, continuously searching for truth and clarity in their rebellious stand.

The video, directed by Megan Ixy Sanchez, showcases the song in a typical goth club scene, with cameos from various characters in the Los Angeles scene.

Watch the video for “Regret 4 Nothing” below:

Paradisco features eight new tracks that delve deep into the realms of Italo disco, hi-NRG, and freestyle. This new album marks a departure from the darker tones Male Tears has explored over the past three years. With their quest for darkness now behind them, the band invites listeners to dress up and embrace the lighter side of life, encouraging a break from self-pity and urging them to cut away the unnecessary and stagnant.

The album is available in a variety of limited editions via Avant! Records, with only 250 copies each of light blue vinyl, yellow vinyl, and digipak CDs, along with a digital version. Fans can look forward to the release on July 12th.

19.04.2024 - Lost in a Dream Again — Philadelphia Shoegaze Project Forest Circles Debuts Video for “Wish”

Lost in a dream again
Tell me that you want me, no need to pretend
I’m giving my heart to you
Kiss me like no other, I’m nobody’s fool
British philosopher Alan Watts, renowned for translating Eastern philosophy for Western minds, frequently explored the idea of embracing the present fully, while acknowledging the impact of past experiences. Watts championed a profound understanding of the self as intertwined with the universe, advocating that balance is found not through exertion, but by accepting life’s inherent rhythms. The concept of the “dreamer” in his teachings refers to viewing life as a series of interconnected moments rather than discrete events. Reflecting on the past and planning for the future serves as a metaphor in his philosophy, illustrating the intricate weave of life’s continuum and challenging the perceived boundaries separating past, present, and future.

Alan Watts’ emphasis on mindfulness resonates in Wish, the hauntingly beautiful new shoegaze single by Philadelphia’s Forest Circles. The track begins as listeners are drawn into a black hole, entering a dream-like realm. Within this ethereal space, the protagonist embarks on a quest for equilibrium, revisiting past events and envisioning future possibilities. This introspective process is depicted as a puzzle, where each piece is a fragment of memories that collectively point towards what’s to come. The act of putting these pieces together symbolizes a deeper understanding of life’s continuity and the interconnectedness of time.

The lyrics express the emotions of someone deeply lost in love, yearning for affirmation and intimacy. The speaker gives their heart willingly, seeking a permanent connection, but experiences heartbreak and regret when things end. Despite attempts to push their lover away, they are left with the realization that the relationship’s failure is their own fault, and they mourn what could have been.

The monochromatic video for Wish amplifies the emotional and psychological undertones of this endeavor, highlighting the often non-linear and complex nature of personal growth and planning. The dream state and flashes of Jungian imagery provide a unique space where the boundaries between time and memory blur, allowing a deep dive into one’s aspirations and the dynamics of personal change.

Watch the video for “Wish” below:

Forest Circles, the creative outlet of multi-instrumentalist Angel Ocana, masterfully melds dream-pop, post-punk, and shoegaze into a unique musical concoction. His introspective, slow-burning style refreshes the listener, while also channeling the deep, emotional currents that defined the late 80s and early 90s music scene. Ocana’s work resonates with a nostalgic echo yet pulses with contemporary energy,

19.04.2024 - NORTHLANE: Mirror’s Edge [EP]

FATHOMLESS RITUAL
„Hymns for the Lesser Gods“
(Technical / Avant-Garde Death Metal)

Wertung: Empfehlung!

VÖ: 01.03.2024

Label: Transcending Obscurity Records

Webseite: Homepage / Instagram / Bandcamp

(yves)

18.04.2024 - French Synth Punk Project LoloCrash Debuts Video for Absurdist Anthem “Sweetie”

Banane fluo kiss cool chou tellement tweetie
And now for something completely different: dust off your pool noodles and skate on over, it’s time to pull an Office Space on symbols of late capitalism.

The protests in France paint a multifaceted picture, encompassing grievances from economic disparity to civil rights. Fueled by contentious policies like pension reforms and COVID-19 measures, demonstrators flood the streets, demanding change. Central to the unrest is a clash between government vision and public concerns. Amid peaceful advocacy, sporadic violence highlights intense frustration. Embracing this dissent, LoloCrash channels the French spirit in the enigmatic video for the highly catchy absurdist anthem, SWEETIE.

The lyrics to SWEETIE, performed in a Tom Vek-style sprechstimme with a B-52s joie de vivre, describe a sweet, cheesy world filled with fluorescent bananas, kisses, and tweets…but “Kris” is urged to reveal their sharp side. Love, chapped lips, smoking, and wide-open legs are referenced – because, you see, the simple pleasures in life we take for granted are at risk. “Kris” is asked to show their claws and grasp what’s slipping away. While the saccharine verses could be construed as fluffy nonsense, it could also be construed as a metaphor for what we, as a collective, could lose.

The delightful video, directed by Julien Ruphy Production, is a phantasmagorical daydream of beating down the system, quite literally. LoloCrash skates his way to a group of balaclava-clad mischief makers, each hellbent on a cathartic smackdown in a vacant lot. Maybe…just maybe…these wacky noodles will at last open the portal to love.

Watch the video for “Sweetie” below:

Picture this: The enigmatic artist LoloCrash was able to play the violin miraculously just two days after birth. A renowned Russian professor spotted their talent and they both escaped to a forest, emulating bird calls all the while. After a 15-year hiatus in the woods, LoloCrash returned to the stage, experimenting with noise and assembling a semi-professional band. Amidst inflation and shuttered bars, LoloCrash devised a jukebox that brought in profit but little respect, or vice versa.

“LoloCrash: the tearful boxer, love’s sting…”

Parisians can catch LoloCrash live on Wednesday,  24 April, at 20:00 at PARIS13 La Dame de Canton.

18.04.2024 - French Outfit Dead Unleash Industrial-tinged Post-Punk in Their Video for “Angels”

The sun is sinking in the tiny window
And I still write the same old song about you.
I’ve never seen your face nor your golden wings
But every night I see you in my dreams.
What can one add about a band named Dead that isn’t immediately apparent? The very moniker suggests a brooding intensity, and indeed, these French architects of somber sound wield a powerfully dark aesthetic even before a single note is played. Yet, it’s when they begin their performance that they truly reveal their full, formidable force.

Four years since their last EP, Dead have been resurrected with a hypnotic new shoegaze-addled single, Angels, a precursor to their eagerly anticipated album, Paradise, set for release in November 2024.

“Angels fall from heaven,” the band posits. “But are they white angels, pure and working for peace, or black angels, fallen from paradise and messengers of death? Or perhaps they are gray angels, our own angels, our sad and worried doubles?”

Angels offers a poignant reflection on an unseen, yet profoundly influential figure—someone who has left an indelible mark on the protagonist’s dreams and early years, despite a stated skepticism about the tales surrounding this figure. As daylight fades, the lyrics explore the persistence of memory and self-doubt, with the devil’s mocking grin serving as a metaphor for external skepticism.

The track resonates with the influences of Suicide, The Soft Moon, A Place to Bury Strangers, and the poetry of Anne Clark, weaving a complex emotional and musical landscape that hints at the depth of the upcoming album.

Directed by Mickaël Auffret, the music video for “Angels” is a raw, glitch-filled vision that captures Dead’s live intensity. The footage, shrouded in smoke and interspersed with eerie, EVP-like sounds, suggests a spectral presence—ghostly voices that seem to issue a foreboding caution. This visual approach effectively complements the song’s themes, creating an atmosphere that is both disquieting and intriguing.

Watch the video for “Angels” below:

If Dead isn’t plotting the apocalypse, they’ve certainly crafted its soundtrack. Angels is bleak and confrontational, yet it maintains a masterful control over rhythm and infuses deep grooves. It’s the kind of music that invites reflection over a cup of black coffee on a moonless night.

18.04.2024 - Canadian Dreampop Ensemble VERTTIGO Debuts Video for “Snow Angels”

When light has gone
Snow angels will turn to grey
Dark veil of our embrace
Into an Endless Lunar Gaze
In Ancient Greek mythology, Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, was seized by Hades and taken to the underworld. The earth, reflecting Demeter’s sorrow, became barren. A negotiated settlement later permitted Persephone to divide her time between the surface, signaling the arrival of spring, and the underworld, ushering in winter. This recurring cycle illustrates the seasonal shifts, embodying themes of renewal and decline, and representing the equilibrium between light and darkness in the natural order.

Snow Angels, the latest release from Canadian dream pop ensemble VERTTIGO, celebrates the sublime beauty nestled in the deep, frozen quietude of those long, frigid northern winters. This ethereal track, evoking the stylings of Weyes Blood, Zola Jesus, Cocteau Twins, and Chrystabell, offers a refreshing breath of polar air. VERTTIGO (who hail from Edmonton, Alberta) seamlessly blur the lines between dream pop, shoegaze and goth music, capturing the hushed exhilaration of watching the first snowflakes gently accumulate, enveloping the world in a serene, soundless blanket. The song distills the spellbinding calm and profound stillness of a snow-covered landscape, wrapping listeners in its enchanting chill.

The lyrics express a sense of ethereal connection and romantic melancholy under the moonlight, where the speaker feels the presence of another, described as holding onto heaven. As the night progresses, there is a shift to solitude and fading memories, symbolized by snow angels turning grey. The song conveys a longing to transcend the physical through a mystical, lunar gaze.

VERTTIGO wanted to create an immersive experience that transports the audience to a realm where the often chilling aspects of a dark winter night are presented as soft and beautiful, so they enlisted figure skaters Mackenzie Mah and Mikala Cutler to perform an exquisite ice dance.

Directed by Morgan Gold and filmed by Chase Gardiner, the visually stunning cinematography blends VERTTIGO’s dark allure with the elements of an ethereal snowscape.

Evoking themes of love, death, and rebirth, the music video alternates between scenes of band members performing amid a relentless blizzard and figure skaters in a dance of resistance and surrender, moving towards and away from an inevitable embrace. This interplay, like Demeter and Hades seeking compromise for the warmth of Persephone, highlights the tumultuous and cyclical nature of human connections, mirrored by the elemental fury of the storm. (There is also a beautiful nod to the exuberant snow scene in Edward Scissorhands).

The beauty of this song and video will surely thaw the iciest of hearts. Watch below:

With subdued synths and muted guitar tones, Verttigo cloaks themselves in black attire and dark makeup, a visual echo of lead singer K A R Í M A H’s haunting vocals.

“We are in a constant spiral of Love, Death, Loss & Rebirth. Living in Verttigo,” they proclaim, succinctly encapsulating their artistic ethos and embracing a cycle of emotional extremes that defines their music and performance style.

Snow Angels is out on all streaming platforms, and as a limited edition 7″ record with Los Angeles-based Dum Dum Records. The B-side to the single will feature VERTTIGO’s New Wave-inspired rendition of Mazzy Star’s dreamy Fade Into You.

Snow Angels is also available now on all major streaming platforms via Dum Dum Records.

18.04.2024 - Frankie Rex In Hologram: The FMs Blend Art, Activism, and the Afterlife in “Transformation Dreams”

Never had to be in your body
For what you got to say
I am not a failure
Your transformation dreams are offloaded
Frankie Rex, the talented vocalist and guitarist of the NYC alt-punk duo The FMs, met a tragic end in 2022 due to a fentanyl overdose at just 37 years old. Initially, this loss appeared to mark the end of the band’s journey; however, this week The FMs have poised themselves to regenerate into a deeply moving and significant new phase – a transformation, if you will.

Frankie Rex, a trans masc artist, was a significant presence in the city’s alt-punk scene since the late 2000s. Their musical path included time with the queer-punk trio BOYS and later, The Violent Orange. In 2017, Frankie and longtime friend Matte Namer joined forces to create The FMs, a moniker that not only stands for the initials of their names but also references “femme/masc” and “female/male,” capturing the duo’s exploration of gender expressions and identities in their music.

Photo: Alice Teeple
The FMs quickly gained notoriety for their pervasive street promotions across New York City’s five boroughs. Their stickers and graffiti stencils seemed to appear on every other block, for a time making their logo a familiar part of the cityscape. Rex and Namer’s rise to prominence was fueled by their unforgettable underground live performances and BDSM-themed parties, in collaboration with the Sub/vert collective, aboard an old barge in Brooklyn. Their music, known for its passionate punk anthems, celebrated diversity, tackled themes of gender and sexuality, and sparked vital discussions on issues like gun violence, toxic masculinity, selfie culture, and AI. Frankie Rex’s approachable and positive attitude fostered many collaborations and celebrated queer life: openly discussing gender fluidity and fostering a sense of community among their followers. Their loss left a massive hole in the NYC scene, one that Namer is determined to fill with good memories of their friend.

The FMs had recorded at least two albums’ worth of material before Rex’s death. Recently, Namer made an announcement on the band’s social media:

“The FMs are crawling out of hibernation.

This year, I am preparing to give you so much of what we were, what we are, what we could have been, what we always will be. So many many songs. Our voices, both together…and apart.
,
I am preparing to steadily give you everything we did that you haven’t heard. To show you what this band truly is. To carry on for my F.
Be here with me so I can show you everything. All for him. All for you.

Our story is not over.”

Transformation Dreams encapsulates the trans experience through metaphors of medical transformation, reflecting the journey from scrutiny to self-actualization. It highlights societal challenges and personal growth, portraying transition as a rebirth that transcends societal rejection, embodying themes of resilience, empowerment, and the profound significance of embracing one’s true identity.

Collaborating with trans artists Dylan Mars Greenberg and 2D animator Rachael DeVore, the video for Transformation Dreams becomes particularly meaningful, exploring the nuanced relationship between the spirit and its physical embodiment. Frankie’s inimitable voice is thankfully preserved and moulded  into the guise of a hologram. Frankie may be resting, but he’s certainly doing it in power.

The video, enriched with appearances from underground artists such as Miss Cherry Delight, Ann-Marie Antonucci, Jazmyn Hanks, Kate Grattan, Danyal, K.D. Griffiths, and Athena Kali, unfolds as a poignant short film delving into themes of consciousness, mortality, and the essence of Self.

This creative alliance offers a unique perspective on gender, reflecting the lived experiences of trans individuals. While the video and acerbic lyrics certainly make a bold political statement in these dangerously unsettled times, it also delves into a deeper spiritual conversation, bridging the gap between our mortal existence and the unknown beyond. It raises the intriguing question: Does gender extend beyond the confines of our worldly dimensions?

Watch “Transformation Dreams” below:

“A lot of our songs are about our journey to free ourselves from the shame of being different,” Namer said in the band’s bio. “We hope our music can celebrate marginalized people who don’t fit into the gender binary, heteronormative culture, and…traditional monogamous relationships.”

The song comes off the FMs’ upcoming album PINK + BLACK, out 10 May.

Recorded throughout 2017-2019 on an old ferry docked in the middle of Bushwick, Brooklyn, PINK + BLACK was produced by bandleader Matte Namer, with Brian Forbes acting as co-producer and mix engineer. The material highlights Namer’s love of analogUE synthesizers combined with etherial guitars and takes a more psychedelic and emotionally dynamic turn as compared to their debut album spanning themes from sexual irreverence, the nature of dreams and human connection, to hope for the future of gender freedom.

“The concept for PINK + BLACK began seven years ago and includes over a thousand hours of blood, sweat and tears put into the recording process,” says Namer. “This is Frankie’s legacy and the world deserves to hear it.”

PINK + BLACK is out on May 10, 2024.

Background/Info: Droid Sector Decay is back on track unleashing their newest album featuring eleven songs.

Related newsDroid Sector Decay – Digital Violence (EP – Underground Industrial Records)Content: The band hold on to their familiar Dark-Electro/EBM influences bringing us back to 90s productions. You’ll also discover passages with Epic arrangements and more Experimental/Ambient cuts with spoken-like vocals. Notice by the way the debut-song of the album is featuring Toxic Razor (Paradox Obscur, Hardware Pulse, Beatbox Machinery ao).

+ + + : I’m into the debut of the work which is driven by  Dark-Electro-driven influences. “Flesh Treatment” is a cool song in the genre.

– – – : The songwriting could be just a bit more elaborated. The front-cover looks pretty old-school/90s-like but is suffering from a lack of professionalism.

Related newsDroid Sector Decay – Decayde Of Industrial 2009-2019 (Album – Underground Industrial Records)Conclusion: I expected a bit more from this album and especially considering this band has been busy for a while. Definitely not their best work to date although an interesting formation.

Best songs: “Flesh Treatment”, “Fear The Jewel Darkness”, “Alcohol Against Drugs”.

18.04.2024 - SELBST: Despondency Chord Progressions

18.04.2024 - Valentina Veil of VV & The Void Wanders the Grounds of a Gothic Manor in her Video for “Grinder”

The music created by VV & The Void is focused on exploring the delicate balance between different forces, such as grace and imbalance, feminine and masculine, and lunar and solar energies. They also delve into the dichotomy of birth and death from an unconscious perspective. Their sound is often described as ethereal, gothic, minimal-drone, and noir, and their approach to these themes is subtle and nuanced.

In Grinder, their latest release from her album THE CAGE (out now via Icy Cold Records), Veil melds her tender vocals with an industrial Motorik rhythm, evoking the passage of time like a malfunctioning grandfather clock. The result creates an unsettling yet serene experience, similar to wandering through a lucid dream. The track is a blend of Kate Bush, The Knife, and Dead Can Dance yet stands out in its distinct atmospheric beauty.

The accompanying video mirrors this dreamlike quality, oscillating between a confined room and an expansive garden, with intermittent close-ups of lips. There is a visual nod here to Kate Bush’s classic take on Wuthering Heights, but the overall effect is trance-inducing, imbued with a witchy and surreal atmosphere that captivates the viewer with its hypnotic allure, reminiscent of the dramatic and gothic flair of the mad Miss Havisham and the tragic pathos of the Brontë sisters.  Unlike the relative whimsy of Kate Bush’s choreography, we really feel the confines of the psyche in Grinder.

Watch the video for “Grinder” below:

Valentina Veil started VV & The Void in Melbourne, Australia. After signing with LA-based label Cleopatra Records, they released their first full-length album The Upper Room in May 2018. Valentina Veil has written, recorded, and produced the album that was mixed by Lindsay Gravina (The Birthday Party, Swervedriver) at Birdland Studios, in Melbourne, Australia. The band toured extensively Europe and was invited by Chameleons Vox to join the UK leg of their tour 2018. Valentina Veil has also collaborated with Night Nail.

Now, in 2024, this gifted band is poised for a renaissance with their forthcoming album, preparing for European performances, notably including a slot at Castle Party in Poland come July.

18.04.2024 - Listen to Berlin Post-Punk Outfit Bleib Modern’s Remix Album “2 Afraid 2 Leave”

Following the success of their critically lauded 2021 album Afraid To Leave, the Berlin-based post-punk outfit Bleib Modern extended an invitation to their artistic comrades to reinterpret their songs, leading to the creation of 2 Afraid 2 Leave. This compilation of diverse covers showcases an array of remixes and reimaginings from notable figures in the darkwave, post-punk, and EBM genres.

2 Afraid 2 Leave showcases a spectrum of creative reinterpretations that breathe new life into its tracks. The KVB infuses the opener, Glow, with a spikier, club-ready edge, while Dune Messiah’s rendition of Loony Voices morphs the track into a frenetic and eerie echo with an unexpected twist of Spaghetti Western flair. IV Horsemen reimagines Bitter Smile as a brooding darkwave anthem, whereas Grotto Terrazza’s bossa nova spin on Your Skin cleverly nods to early Depeche Mode vibes. Meanwhile, X!lit Klaus’s rendition of Sleep clashes with metallic, resonant clamor, creating an incessant racket that ironically invigorates, reminiscent of Fad Gadget’s avant-garde experiments.

Bring Her’s interpretation of Portrait echoes a haunting synergy reminiscent of Kim Gordon and Xmal Deutschland, as if unearthing a long-lost collaboration. Soaked is transformed by Promille Grazie into an eerie echo that reverberates with the distinctive melancholy of The Cure. Meanwhile, The Underground Youth’s exquisite cover of Around Your Arms carries the profound intensity of Nick Cave, imbuing the track with a gravitas and soul-stirring howl. Shad Shadows takes a stab at Walls, whirling us into the space with wildly swooshing flangers, launching into an echoing, haunting vocal reminiscent of Interpol.

Accompanying the new version of Into The Night, covered by M!R!M!, is a visually arresting music video, the handiwork of the band’s drummer, Thomas Schamann, endearingly referred to as “glitchboy.” This self-directed clip artfully stitches together scenes from their vibrant Fall 2021 tour with M!R!M. As it unfolds, the video traverses the landscapes of Germany, France, and the Czech Republic, each frame offering an intimate lens into Bleib Modern’s vigorous live performances and their creative journey. It’s a piece that not only complements the music but also provides a window into the band’s spirited sojourns and artistic endeavours.

Das Beat infuses Glow with a funky Krautrock essence, complemented by vocals that carry a hint of Marlene Dietrich’s sinister allure. Blind Delon’s take on Loony Voices veers into the realm of the nightmarish, marked by its hauntingly distorted vocals. The compilation concludes with Nox’s rendition of “Sleep,” tenderly reimagined as a soothing piano ballad.

With 2 Afraid 2 Leave you can enjoy Bleib Modern’s music from a different perspective while the band is working on brand new material.

The visual identity of 2 Afraid 2 Leave is the collaborative creation of Thomas Schamann and Peter Zeitner, with the album’s audio meticulously mastered for vinyl by Ruud Lekx. The album finds its home with Wave Tension Records for its vinyl incarnation and Icy Cold Records for the CD format.

18.04.2024 - Philadelphia’s NIGHT SINS Debuts Video for Brooding Gothic Rock Dirge “Silver Blade”

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, steeped in history and cultural richness, also possesses a distinctly moody and introspective side. The city’s gloom is often enhanced by its weather—overcast skies and biting winds are particularly prevalent during the extended winter months. Such climatic conditions are a fitting backdrop to the historic architecture dotting many neighborhoods, where Victorian homes and centuries-old structures loom with gloom.

This atmospheric setting extends into the city’s artistic and literary spheres, which frequently delve into themes of melancholy and the Gothic-with-a-capital-G. Philadelphia was the haunting ground that sharpened Edgar Allan Poe’s focus on the macabre, infusing his work with a sense of dread that mirrored the city’s own dark corners. Similarly, David Lynch found both inspiration and a frankly terrifying quality in Philadelphia, elements that profoundly influenced his surreal cinematic masterpiece, Eraserhead.

This blend of beauty, history, melancholy, and resilience makes Philadelphia a profoundly intriguing city, and its resident dark wave band Night Sins reminds us that the brooding spirit of music is certainly not confined to the castles and cobblestones of Europe. After forging an alliance over a decade ago, this group has become synonymous with the city’s darkly atmospheric character, marked by pervasive dread and crumbling edifices.

Night Sins captures the essence of their city while channeling influences from The Sisters of Mercy and Clan of Xymox, seamlessly integrating touches of The Nephilim and Mission and 1980s darkwave into their music. This combination creates a deeply layered soundscape where bass and drums make a forceful entrance, guitar riffs weave through with precision, and minimalist synths clear the residual haze. Kyle Kimball’s vocals slice through this textured backdrop with sharp clarity and strong presence. Amidst the surrounding darkness, Night Sins stands out, boldly carrying the torch with distinct style.

Now Night Sins announce the release of a new single, Silver Blade, a curveball of a song that’s set them on a true tradgoth side quest. Sounding more like a lost Sisters track than their usual style, it’s a particularly welcome shift during this series of gloomy spring rainstorms on the East Coast.

“Silver Blade is maybe the first truly collaborative Night Sins song,” says Kimball. “Chris just started strumming the main riff and I said we should make it a song. Vince wrote some leads and Cassandra sussed out the rhythm parts and the rest is history. It’s a song about fractured relationships. Sometimes you have to accept the reality of the end and move on. ‘Tear me up. Not for show but all of the way.'”

The video is a murky cavalcade of glitches: it depicts the band playing in a dimly lit club, an eerie and mysterious venue that suits the song’s ambience perfectly. Watching it, one is swept into the visceral thrill of experiencing music in such an intimate, shadowed space—feeling the rhythm throb throughout your body in the blessed darkness.

(Warning: this video may potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.)

Night Sins’ upcoming EP, A Silver Blade in the Shadow, slated for release on May 17th via Born Losers Records, appears set to solidify their position in the realm of dark music. This five-track mini-album promises to underscore the band’s signature fusion of intense sounds and a raw, unpolished edge that distinctly defines their musical identity.
