Lest nachfolgend das Gastbeitrag von Marc „Cryptic Tormentor“ Strobel von der Berliner Truppe CARNAL TOMB mit seinen Eindruck zum aktuellen SPECTRAL VOICE-Album:

Ende 2023 hörte ich mal wieder in das vorherige Album der Truppe aus Denver und dachte mir, wann es denn wieder ein neues Album geben würde, da seit 2017 doch ein paar Jahre vergangen waren und man auf diversen Live-Shows schon mitbekommen hatte, dass es neues Material gibt (was sich aber auf den diversen Split-Veröffentlichungen nicht wiederfand). Keine paar Tage später kam dann die Veröffentlichung über die gängigen Kanäle, dass das neue Werk auf dem Weg ist und bald erscheint. Dass der erste Track direkt zur Vinyl-Vorbestellung führte, erwähne ich kurz, damit auch klar ist, in welche Richtung dieses Review geht – ich bin absolut voreingenommen.

Das Erste, was mir aufgefallen ist, was mich zutiefst positiv „beruhigt“ hat, ist die Produktion des Albums. Herr Rizk hat dort wirklich gute Arbeit geleistet und die Band meiner Meinung nach so eingefangen, wie sie auch wirklich klingen bzw. wie das auf das Erlebnis zuhause bzw. den Tonträger übertragen werden sollte. Ich empfand es als größte Schwäche des ersten Albums, dass es unglaublich verwaschen, drucklos und brav klang. Auch die Atmosphäre wurde hier nicht wirklich komplett eingefangen, weil die Aufnahme nicht so richtig aus sich herauskommt, was sehr schade ist, da die Songs grandios sind. Warum erwähne ich das alles? Weil es hier vollkommen gelöst ist! Es ist roh, aber es drückt, die Atmosphäre, die man von SPECTRAL VOICE erwartet, ist da, ohne dabei Details oder Klarheit zu verlieren. Das Album klingt einfach intensiv und gefährlich und vermittelt mir eben das Gefühl, die Band so zu erleben, wie ich sie auch mehrfach live erleben durfte – spitze!

Musikalisch bietet „Sparagmos“ das, was SPECTRAL VOICE bisher gemacht hat. Die Formel, die sich soweit bewährt hat, wird nicht neu entwickelt, aber das finde ich muss man auch nicht. Dafür hat man BLOOD INCANTATION, und das finde ich auch gut so. Man ist in seinem Handwerk einfach reifer geworden, die Songs finde ich tatsächlich etwas eingängiger, kommen schneller zur Sache, und man konzentriert sich auf das, was bisher funktioniert hat. Dazu die einzigartige und wirklich beeindruckende Stimme von Eli Wendler, rundet das Death-Doom-Erlebnis perfekt ab – Growls und Schreie perfekt vermählt mit ordentlich Hall und Delay. Dieses Alleinstellungsmerkmal wird auch noch viele Jahre von der „Konkurrenz“ (die seit 2017 auf jeden Fall stärker geworden ist) abheben.

Das Ganze bedeutet aber wahrhaftig nicht, dass die Platte extrem eingängig ist oder jeder sofort den Zugang dort findet. Vor allem, wenn man die Länge der 4 Songs berücksichtigt, muss man sich auf jeden Fall etwas Zeit und auch Ruhe nehmen, um das, was man dort um die Ohren gedroschen kriegt, auch aufnehmen kann. „Sinew Censer“ ist durch den Einstieg zweifelsohne mein Favorit darunter. Hört es euch einfach mal an, Riffs sagen ja bekanntlich mehr als 1000 Worte.

Das Album wird definitiv in meinen Top-Alben 2024 zu finden sein, und ich hoffe, dass die Herren aus Denver sich wieder mal in nächster Zeit in Europa einfinden werden. Wer von dem Album nicht genug hat, sollte auf jeden Fall das letzte und einzige Album von SWALLOWED aus Finnland anhören, mit dem Namen „Lunarterial“; dort gibt es aus meiner Sicht sehr, sehr viele Parallelen, die SV hier sehr schön weiterführt. Interessant bleibt es zu hören, wie es mit SV weitergeht. Da ich an dem Album eigentlich nichts zu kritisieren habe, bleibt für mich die Frage, wie man nun noch eine Schippe drauflegen kann? Aber darüber debattieren wir, wenn es so weit ist, hoffentlich nicht erst in 6 Jahren. (marc)

“Detachment from ourselves, now what have we become?”
For much of Kontravoid’s existence, the artist’s face has remained a mystery at first glance, though it is not uncommon to see his face make a cameo in a Boy Harsher video or two. Typically, he dons a mask reminiscent of Greek tragedy—expressionless, a white plaster shroud enveloping the soul. This mask serves both as a shield for detachment and a sanctuary for concealment. Reminiscent of the classic death mask L’Inconnue de la Seine, cast from the face of a young girl who had drowned in France in the 1880s, its serene yet enigmatic frozen features provided a barrier of secrets and riddles. 

This dynamic shifts with Detachment, a video piece crafted by Sean McGuirk. It can very well be described as performance art…or lampooning it. Either way, it’s effective. For three full minutes, singer Cameron Findlay engages the camera with an unwavering gaze. Imagine: an Olan Mills portrait brought to life by Marina AbramoviÄ� on a 1987 broadcast of WPVI Action News.

The visuals seamlessly complement the song’s languid synth-pop groove, monotone vocals, and lyrics that delve into a state of detachment. Findlay simultaneously satirizes and confronts his creation head-on. With all the angst swirling our airwaves, arms flailing, teeth gnashing, words hurting, and deaths skyrocketing – it is unnerving to see such a stare. It is both soothing and heartening when most of us want to look away.

“Detachment is more or less the theme for most of the tracks on the record, referring to being disconnected from reality in some way,” he explains. “It’s just a theme I wanted to explore with this era of the project.”

Jahrhunderts plagte. In „DAS ARCHIV“ ging es um den unausweichlichen Untergang der Menschheit und „DER STERN“ erzählt die Geschichte vom Ende des Universums.

INSECT ARK sind ein Projekt von Dana Schechter (SWANS) und Tim Wyskida (KHANATE). Das Duo veröffentlicht am 7. Juni 2024 das Album “Raw Blood Singing”.

Reinhören kann man nun auch in die zweite Single “The Frozen Lake” bei YouTube.

Als ersten Song teilte das Duo im März den Track “Youth Body Swayed” bei YouTube.

Für das Album nahm Dana Schechter erstmals seit vielen Jahren wieder Gesang auf:

“Evolution anzunehmen und furchtlos gegenüber neuem zu sein, das macht INSECT ARK aus. Dieses Album ist ein Erweckungserlebnis fü rmich. In einer inspirienden Atmosphäre habe ich nach zehn Jahren wieder versucht zu singen. Ermutigt durch Tim, unseren Manager, und andere Gelegenheiten wie z.B. bei der Aufnahme der Vocals für  ‘The Beggar’ von SWANS. Zu meiner Überraschung fühlte es sich großartig an, wieder zu singen. Ich fühlte mich, als käme ich nach dem Winterschlaf aus einer tiefen Höhle gekrochen und blinzelte unbeholfen in das helle und ungemütliche Licht des Frühlings.”

Der Mix kommt von Colin Marston, das Mastering von James Plotkin . Als Gastmusiker sind Colin Marston and Ville Leppilahti (ORANSSI PAZUZU) zu hören. Chris Friel hat zusammen mit Dana Schechter Cover und Layout entworfen.

Live stellen INSECT ARK das neue Album bei einer Releaseshow im Berliner Club Neue Zukunft am 7. Juni 2024 vor.

Die Psychedelic Hard Rock-Band WORSHIPPER hat ihr drittes Studioalbum für 19. Juli 2024 angekündigt. Ein Lyric-Video zum Song “One Way Trip” steht nun via YouTube bereit.

Die erste Single “Acid Burns” kann man sich ebenfalls als Video bei YouTube ansehen. Sänger und Gitarrist John Brookhouse erklärt:

“Dieser Song ist ein schnelles Stück für uns mit einer Prise NWOBHM, aber mit einer Surf-Bridge. Geht es um… die Gefahren des Auskostens der Leere? Klar. ‘Acid Burns’ war der erste Track, an dem wir für diese Platte gearbeitet haben. Ich liebe Alex’ Solo, denn es erinnert mich an eine verlorene Adrian Smith-Aufnahme von ‘Powerslave’. Textlich kann man den Song auf mehrere Arten betrachten, aber natürlich ist alles durch eine psychologische Brille betrachtet. Ich spiele immer gerne mit Doppeldeutigkeiten und vermische Metaphern.”

“Toxic Grace” ist der Titel des kommenden EVILDEAD-Albums, es erscheint am 24. Mai 2024 über Steamhammer/SPV.

Nun gibt es auch ein Video zu “Subjugated Soul”, dem zweiten Vorab-Track des Albums. Mit ‚Raising Fresh Hell‘ stellt die amerikanische Thrash Metal-Band im März den ersten Song des Albums vor.

Sänger Phil Flores beschreibt ‚Toxic Grace’ als ein „Album mit einer Vielzahl verschiedener Stile und Sounds, von Doom bis Melodic Metal, von traditionellem Heavy Metal bis zu unserem signifikanten Old-School-Thrash-Stil.“

Located in Madison, WI, the darkwave electronic industrial band Sensuous Enemy signed to Distortion two years ago with the “Rebirth” EP along with the “Fire in the Dark” single. Having recently returned to the stage, the band describes the album as follows: “‘The Awakening’ is a concept album and an ongoing journey of the dark side of the soul. It covers experiences ranging from death, to accepting who we are, to the light that emanates from inside all of us. This album has been a collective effort from Sensuous Enemy as we fought through many trials over the past couple of years. We hope this album touches our fans and brings them the comfort and understanding that we have all been seeking.”

Leicht haben es INTER ARMA ihren Hörer*innen noch nie gemacht. Das Quintett aus Richmond, Virginia sieht sich als Grenzgänger zwischen Death Metal, Sludge und Post Metal, liebäugelt dazwischen immer wieder mit stilfremden Elementen und überzeugt gerade in dieser Disziplin. Das starke Albentrio „Sky Burial“, „Paradise Gallows“ und „Sulphur English“ liegt daher auch noch Jahre später schwer im Magen. Vier Jahre nach ihrem letzten Lebenszeichen, „Garbers Days Revisited“ mit seinen acht teils sehr originellen Coversongs, überraschen INTER ARMA mit dem bisher kürzesten Album ihrer Karriere: „New Heaven“ dauert keine Dreiviertelstunde und ist damit sogar kürzer als die brillante EP „The Cavern“.

Verknappt, fragmentiert und dennoch komplex: INTER ARMA richten mit „New Heaven“ ihr Songwriting neu aus.
Es deutete sich durch diese Hard Facts schon fast an: „New Heaven“ ist verglichen mit den früheren Alben von INTER ARMA vergleichsweise fragmentiert und zwischendurch zerfahren, obwohl das Quintett immerhin zwei Songs mit über sieben Minuten Länge bietet. „New Heaven“ lässt als eröffnender Titeltrack aber erstmals nur musikalisches Chaos erkennen. Der tonnenschwere Death Metal beginnt dissonant und rhythmisch vertrackt und hat dank der disharmonischen Leads einen Hauch Mathcore in sich. Was anfangs eher irritiert, sortiert sich beim Hören mit Kopfhörern – hier erzeugen INTER ARMA den passenden Raum. Der Drumsound mit viel Reverb, der an die 90er erinnert, und die breitwandigen Gitarren lassen sich dadurch viel leichter durchdringen.

Das treibende, mit ethnisch-mythologischen Gitarrenläufen geprägte Intro von „Violet Seizures“ steigert sich bald in Richtung Fieberwahn und zeigt, wie zwingend INTER ARMA agieren. So etwas wie Entspannung gibt es im Anschluss: „Desolation’s Harp“ ist nach einem furiosen Beginn schon fast klassisch strukturiert: Blast Beats, klare Riffs darüber gelegt, die Mischung aus Growls und Screams, und fertig ist das, was man als kleinen Hit bezeichnen können, auch dank einer Steigerung mit geschickt platzierten Gitarrenharmonien. Hier funktioniert die Verknappung, von INTER ARMAs Musik richtig gut.

„New Heaven“ wirkt vor allem auf Kopfhörern: INTER ARMAs Soundwand ist präsent in ihrer Brachialität, während sich die Band stilistisch nicht fassen lassen will.
Das instrumentale, von Twin Guitars dominierte Interlude „Endless Grey“ und das Gothic-Alternative Country-Stück „Gardens In The Dark“ disruptieren die vorangegangene Brutalität, werden aber nicht großflächig genug ausgespielt, um zu voller Größe anzuwachsen. Das funktioniert umso besser bei „The Children The Bomb Overlooked“: INTER ARMA leben hier ihr Grenzgängertum perfekt aus und entwickeln sich von TOM WAITS über NEUROSIS zu MORBID ANGEL. Am Ende gibt es keinen weiteren großen Big Bang, „New Heaven“ endet mit dem America-Song „Forest Service Road Blues“, der einerseits unspektakulär ist, andererseits aber gerade deshalb aufhorchen lässt, weil er durch seine Ruhe aus dem Album heraussticht und es tragisch beschließt.

Es steckt in INTER ARMAs DNA, die Grenzbereiche im Metal erlebbar zu machen, in denen viel Spannendes passieren kann. Das funktioniert natürlich nur, weil die Band sich stilistisch öffnen kann. Vor allem als Songwriter erforscht Drummer T.J. Childers den Raum zwischen den Genres und lässt INTER ARMA auf diese Art und Weise weiter einzigartig klingen. Frontmann Mike Paparo, dessen Growls brutal und tief, und dessen Singstimme einen düster-predigenden Gothic-Americana-Touch hat, ist der wirkliche Star auf diesem Album. Ihre Klangästhetik ist derweil nach wie vor einzigartig: So wenig wie sich INTER ARMA fassen lassen wollen, so präsent sind sie in all ihrer Brachialität. Und doch, „New Heaven“, das INTER ARMA verkürzt und verknappt präsentiert, holt nicht so weit aus, wie die Vorgänger. Solide ist das Album zweifellos, komplex und sperrig sowieso – aber leider zeigt es auch eine Band, die etwas mehr irrlichtert, als es ihr immer guttut.  Etwas mehr wäre hier schon drin gewesen.

Schon bei Erscheinen im Frühjahr 2023 war „The Devil’s Dozen“ eigentlich aus der Zeit gefallen. Als Streaming-Show während der Pandemie im Jahr 2021 konzipiert, ist der Mitschnitt aber immerhin auch im Audioformat eine ansprechende Sache. Aufgrund des fehlenden Live-Publikums kaum essentiell, überzeugen INFECTED RAIN hingegen in allen anderen Kategorien.

Der Soundmix ist erwartungsgemäß druckvoll und transparent, so dass uns die mit 21 Songs üppig zusammengestellte Setlist auch ohne gewöhnliches Konzert-Ambiente in den heimischen vier Wänden einzuheizen vermag. Im Fokus steht dabei das zum Aufnahmezeitpunkt noch aktuelle Album „Endorphin“ (2019) sowie dessen Vorgänger „86“ (2017) – für Fans der ersten Stunde halten INFECTED RAIN aber zumindest mit „Sweet, Sweet Lies“, „Stop Waiting“ sowie „Dead Mannequin“ auch einige wenige Klassiker bereit.

Da Sängerin Lena Scissorhands über nahezu 100 Minuten stimmlich eine richtig gute Figur macht, dabei sowohl den Klargesang als auch die extremen Vocals mit überzeugender Souveränität darbietet, eignet sich „The Devil’s Dozen“ nicht nur als kleine Rückschau, sondern ebenso gut zum Einstieg in den eigenen Modern- / Nu-Metal-Klangkosmos der Moldauer. Qualitativ mögen INFECTED RAIN in den folgenden Jahren noch etwas zugelegt haben, die typische Energie ihrer Live-Shows fängt diese Aufzeichnung aber sogar ohne Publikum erstaunlich gut ein. Als Live-Platte ist „The Devil’s Dozen“ aus heutiger Sicht wohl ein Relikt, doch immerhin altert sie seitdem in Würde.

Die Doom- / Doom-Death-Metal Band MY DYING BRIDE hat angekündigt, eine Pause einzulegen. Davon betroffen sind auch sämtliche Live-Auftritte des laufenden Jahres. Als Grund nennen die Briten gegenwärtig unüberwindbare Spannungen innerhalb der Band, welche im Zuge der herausfordernden Aufnahmen zum neuen Album “A Mortal Binding” (2024) zutage traten.

Das komplette Statement der Formation zum Nachlesen:

“Die Produktion dieses letzten Albums war so anstrengend und herausfordernd, dass sie Brüche innerhalb der Band zutage gefördert hat. Diese Spannungen waren bereits während der Entstehung der beiden Vorgängeralben zu beobachten und haben sich während der Covid-Phase noch verstärkt. In den letzten Monaten haben sich diese Spannungen noch verstärkt und eine tiefe Unzufriedenheit unter den Bandmitgliedern ausgelöst. Der daraus resultierende Stress und das allgegenwärtige Gefühl von Burnout sowie das daraus resultierende körperliche und geistige Unwohlsein machten eine Auszeit notwendig, die sich leider auch auf die Live-Shows auswirkt.

Der Grund für das Fehlen einer offiziellen Stellungnahme bis jetzt ist, dass die Band wirklich gehofft hat, diese internen Probleme zu lösen und einige Shows in diesem Jahr zu spielen, während sie versucht hat, rechtzeitig eine Lösung zu finden, die alle beteiligten Parteien zufrieden stellt. Leider ist diese Lösung noch nicht gefunden worden.

Bedauerlicherweise haben mangelndes Verständnis und schlechte Kommunikation seitens unserer professionellen Partner zu einem unzeitgemäßen und chaotischen Durcheinander geführt, aus dem eine Erholung nur schwer möglich ist. Die Veranstalter wurden jedoch inzwischen offiziell kontaktiert, und wir hoffen, dass Schritte unternommen werden können, um die Auswirkungen für alle zu minimieren.

Wir entschuldigen uns dafür, dass wir euch im Unklaren gelassen haben, aber es sind in der Tat schwierige Zeiten.”

Die legendäre Gothic-Rock-Band CHRISTIAN DEATH hat eine Reihe von Tourdaten für Europa angekündigt. Die „Armageddon Tour“ wird die Band von Spanien durch Deutschland, Belgien, Polen, Italien, Frankreich, die Niederlande und die Tschechoslowakei führen, bevor sie am 3. Juni in Irland endet.

Die Black Metal-Band SETH hat mit “La France des maudits” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das siebte Album der Franzosen und folgt dem 2021er-Album “La morsure du Christ” nach.

Abermals von Francis Caste (u.a. für REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER tätig) im Studio Sainte Marthe in Paris produziert wird das neue Album der vor knapp 30 Jahren gegründeten Band aus Bordeaux am 14. Juli 2024 via Season of Mist erscheinen. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Andy Julia.

Vorab gibt es mit “Et Que Vive le Diable!” einen Video-Clip.

Out now is the brand new single from La Carte Records’ own Julia Gaeta. On “Hangin On A Dream” the Paris-based musician blends post-punk, dark synth-pop and industrial. The single announces a new EP (including a collaboration with Perturbator) called “Blur Divine” which will be out on July 2nd. This already Julia Gaeta’s second single from her upcoming EP “Blur Divine”.

About “Hangin On A Dream,” she says: “It is about coming to terms with your desires, and realizing you may have never had them fulfilled. You’re grasping at something and it slips away, leaving you hanging, confused, wondering. The verses were written on the spot in a studio in Portugal. This is a dual-part song, one that begins very intimately and floaty, and then swells deeper into a trance-like state.”

For the upcoming EP Gaeta has been inspired by personal events, stories of those around her, and what she calls “the push-pull energy of gritty Paris nights”.

In late 2021, Gaeta linked up with James “Perturbator” Kent, who took an interest in the track’s dark trip-hop sound. He produced and mixed the track, which coincided with a video by filmmaker David Fitt – an ode to Paris nights.

The EP was finally completed in 2023 and further produced by LA-based producer Alex DeGroot (Zola Jesus). You can already pre-order it below.

Growing up listening to metal, grunge, post-punk and goth music, Gaeta carries with her the influences of bands such as Alice in Chains, Depeche Mode and Killing Joke mixed with a deep love of ‘90s and early ‘00s pop and hip-hop. After playing guitar in bands for nearly a decade, Gaeta dropped her first solo single, “Weight of You”, in early 2022 – which featured a production and mixing appearance from James “Perturbator” Kent. “Weight of You” is set to be included as a B-Side on Blur Divine.

Die Melodic Death Metal-Band ANCIENT SETTLERS hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “Wounded Heart” mit “Coven Garden” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Oblivion’s Legacy” veröffentlicht. Es ist nach “Our Last Eclipse” (2022) das zweite Album der internationalen Band aus Spanien und Venezuela.

“Oblivion’s Legacy” sei ein konzeptionelles Werk, das in die Tiefen der menschlichen Existenz vordringt und das Vermächtnis erforscht, das wir als Individuen und als Spezies hinterlassen. Die Texte befassen sich mit den Auswirkungen unseres Handelns, den Kämpfen, denen wir uns stellen müssen, und dem Schicksal, das uns letztlich alle erwartet.

Produziert wurde das Album von Fredrick Nordstrom im Studio Fredman, während das Cover-Artwork aus der Feder von Jon Toussas stammt. Release-Termin ist der 17. Mai 2024 via Scarlet Records.

Carving out their own distinct path in the thriving and diverse Texas alternative music scene, Don’t Get Lemon stands out as a genre-defying act that captures all the great things pop music used to be in the halcyon days of the new wave era. The band’s intriguing name, Don’t Get Lemon, comes from a playful twist on Cockney rhyming slang for “don’t get smart,” referencing the phrase “lemon tart.” This choice reflects their sharp, witty approach to music and homage to influences like The Stone Roses and the spirit of the ’68 Paris riots.

Specifically, The Stone Roses, an iconic Manchester act, famously incorporated lemon imagery into their 1989 debut album cover as a political statement. The lemon, used by protestors during the May 1968 Paris riots as an antidote to tear gas, symbolizes protest and defiance. This imagery resonated deeply with Don’t Get Lemon, influencing their name and underlining their own music’s themes of resistance and speaking out against societal issues.

Central to the world-building art-pop ensemble Don’t Get Lemon are the trio of Austin Curtis, Nicholas Ross, and Bryan Walters, three longtime friends whose combined creative vision has thrust the band headlong into the limelight with their stylish take on post-punk and synthpop. Austin Curtis, with his magnetic charisma, serves as the band’s suave frontman, whose powerful vocals and stage persona are captivating with their mix of theatrical flair tinged with intense emotion.

Nicholas Ross and Bryan Walters amplify Austin Curtis’s performances with their versatile musical skills, shaping the distinctive sound that defines the band. Ross, a wizard on both synth and guitar, weaves the music with dense, atmospheric textures, while Walters anchors the tracks with his robust bass lines and dynamic percussion. Their lyrics, however, make these politically charged anthems of our time, with topics of social media, school shootings, and the general malaise of the 2020s.

Have Some Shame, available now through à La Carte Records and Summer Darling Tapes, was put together in rural Texas by Dan Duszynski of Loma/Sub Pop fame, and given its final polish by Paul Gold, known for his work with LCD Soundsystem and Animal Collective. This lively set of tracks pushes back against the detached coolness of typical coldwave, opting instead for a warmer, more passionate approach the band playfully calls “Heatwave.”

The album opens with the aptly titled title track, which explores themes of authenticity and materialism. It contrasts genuine emotional experiences with the superficiality of fame and external appearances, leading to alienation and the contemplation of the emptiness of public life. The song emphasizes the need for emotional honesty and criticizes those who lack self-awareness or remorse.

Next comes the powerful Blow-Up, which addresses vulnerability, internal conflict, and disillusionment. The recurring idea of imminent self-destruction reflects a deep-seated fear of personal downfall or demise. The repetition, percussion, and chorus of this song evoke a Combat Rock-era Clash vibe.



Say Something New For Once, with its winking and exaggerated indie-pop swagger, expresses frustration with superficial communication and a longing for genuine, meaningful dialogue. This desire for authenticity is coupled with a critique of pretentious or empty literary efforts, yearning for something truly profound.



Highway 59 is an effervescent journey through time and sound, with bubbling retro synths that recall the nostalgic undertones of Survive and Black Marble, coupled with a vocal delivery that finds a unique crossroad between the haunting depth of Dave Gahan, the chameleonic allure of David Bowie, and the resonant croons reminiscent of early-2000s post-punk revival. The presence of the guitars is subtle yet profound, shimmering with an ethereal quality that evokes the peak artistry of The Cure’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and Disintegration, with echoes of the iconic Cocteau Twins Gretsch sound as heard in Crushed.



Just in time for graduation season, Pomp and Circumstance packs a wallop of political commentary about the repercussions of gun violence in schools. The song reflects on the disillusionment and frustration of youth in its wake – as well as the harsh realities of urban life, and the sense of hopelessness that can deter aspirations. The tone is one of mourning and deep introspection, lamenting the loss of innocence and the pervasive pain in contemporary society.

Last Chance For Romance explores the tension between professional obligations and personal desires, portraying an internal conflict: does one follow their dreams or fulfill their job duties? The theme of longing for recognition and love adds a layer of emotional depth to the struggle between duty and desire. This is followed by Automatic Gore, a journey from empathy to apathy… and back towards a reconstructed sympathy. It critiques societal norms and power structures, lamenting the inequities of wealth and opportunities, ultimately seeking authenticity in a reimagined reality.

Nostalgia and longing, painted against a backdrop of elemental imagery like wind and waves, take centre stage in The Crest of A Wave. There’s a profound sense of loss and a desire for renewal, culminating in an acceptance of personal shortcomings and a relinquishing of control.

We leave the album with another timely track, Pop Star Salvation, about transient nature of fame and the superficiality of modern success. It asks the tough question: does distinguishing oneself truly offers lasting value or historical significance? A “tear-stained love letter” auctioned to the highest bidder; the personal struggles of tortured poets – all commodified for survival, underscores the cynicism toward the entertainment industry.

NAILED TO OBSCURITY haben den Ausstieg ihres Bassisten Carsten Schorn (Foto) bekannt gegeben, welcher die Melodic Doom-Death-Metal-Band nach 17 Jahren verlassen hat. Die Trennung, welche bereits Anfang 2024 erfolgte, sei jedoch im Guten vollzogen worden, wie beide Parteien in einem Statement auf ihren Social-Media-Kanälen verlauten ließen.

NAILED TO OBSCURITY haben zu Schorns Entscheidung Folgendes zu sagen:

“Nach 17 unglaublichen Jahren verabschieden wir uns von unserem geschätzten Bassisten Carsten Schorn, der Anfang des Jahres die Entscheidung getroffen hat, die Band zu verlassen. Wir trennen uns freundschaftlich, erfüllt von tiefer Dankbarkeit für seine unschätzbaren Beiträge zu dieser unglaublichen Reise, mit all ihren Höhen und Tiefen. Obwohl sich unsere musikalischen Wege nun trennen, bleibt unser Zusammenhalt ungebrochen, denn die Pflege unserer langjährigen Freundschaft hat für uns alle Priorität, was auch eine große Rolle bei diesem Schritt gespielt hat.

Carstens Weggang wird zweifellos Spuren hinterlassen, doch wir unterstützen seine Entscheidung von ganzem Herzen und sind froh, dass er mit Thulcandra schon vor einiger Zeit eine neue musikalische Heimat gefunden hat. Wir werden die zahllosen gemeinsamen Erinnerungen an all die tollen Dinge, die wir zusammen erlebt haben, für immer in Ehren halten und wünschen ihm viel Erfolg bei seinen zukünftigen Unternehmungen.

Nailed To Obscurity werden mit ungebrochener Leidenschaft und Hingabe weitermachen und wir können es kaum erwarten, neue Musik zu präsentieren und schon bald wieder Live-Shows zu spielen!”

Carsten Schorn hat selbst Folgendes zu seiner Entscheidung zu sagen:

“Eine Reise ist zu Ende.

Einige von euch haben es vielleicht schon bemerkt. Das Jahr 2024 begann mit einer großen Veränderung in meinem Leben. Im Januar habe ich beschlossen, Nailed To Obscurity zu verlassen.

In den letzten 17 Jahren haben wir unvergessliche Momente erlebt und ich werde immer dankbar für diese Erfahrung sein.
Ohne NTO hätte ich nicht so viele Orte gesehen und so viele tolle Menschen getroffen. Die Liste der Menschen, die uns auf unserem Weg unterstützt haben, ist viel zu lang, um sie im Einzelnen aufzulisten, aber ich möchte mich bei jedem einzelnen von ihnen bedanken. Ihr wisst, wer ihr seid!

Mein Weg, wie der von Nailed To Obscurity, wird weitergehen, nur eben getrennt. Ich hoffe, dass mein Nachfolger die gleiche Unterstützung erhält, die ich im Laufe der Jahre erhalten habe.
Und seid euch immer bewusst: ‘Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei!’

Brooklyn-based post-punk outfit Clone (a supergroup featuring members of The Veldt, Dead Leaf Echo, Namesake and Pilot To Gunner) present “Dividing Line”. “Dividing Line” is a song “about how Donald Trump tried to start a class war within the USA,” says the band. It will be the lead track from their debut record “CL. 1”, out this summer via Portland’s Little Cloud Records and North Carolina’s 5BC Records.

Led by LG Galleon, frontman of Dead Leaf Echo, Clone started playing shows in summer of 2019. “CL.1” was recorded and mixed by NYC legendary producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans, Brian Eno, John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, Iggy Pop, Helmet, Dresden Dolls, Cop Shoot Cop) at his BC Studio (actually built by Brian Eno). The material was then and mastered by Fred Kevorkian, another name that will ring many bells. Besides LG Galleon we also find NYC musicians Gregg Giufree (Pilot to Gunner), Max Idas and Dominick Turi. Live, he is joined by Paul Liziragga (Namesake) and Alex Cox (The Veldt).

The video for “Dividing Line”, which involved claymation, drawing and digital rendering, was created by Preston Spurlock.

Gothic rock band Christian Death has announced a series of European tour dates. D믭 the ‘Armageddon Tour’, the run will take the band from Spain through Germany, Belgium, Poland, Italy, France, The Netherlands and Czechoslovakia before concluding in Ireland on June 3.

Regarding the title of the tour, Christian Death leader, Valor Kand says: “We do not claim to be clairvoyant, just look around. An eye for an eye, a pound for a pound.”

Christian Death will be supporting their most recent full-length album, “Evil Becomes Rule” while performing classic tracks from their extensive back catalog. “Evil Becomes Rule” is the band’s 17th studio album with a line-up consisting of Valor, Maitri, Chuck “Chains” Lenihan and Steve Kilroy.

Die Hardcore Punk-Band ALARM! hat ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum angekündigt. Der erste Release der Band aus Stockholm wurde gemeinsam mit Linus Björklund im Studio Ryssviken aufgenommen und gemixt und von Brad Boatright gemastert.

Den Grundstock der Band bilden die drei (ehemaligen) VICTIMS-Bandkollegen Gitarrist Gareth Smith, Bassist Jon Lindqvist und Drummer Andy Henriksson, die sich Sänger Henrik Lindqvist (Ex-OUTLAST) mit ins Boot holten.

“Alarm!” wird am 14. Juni 2024 via Armageddon Label erscheinen.

UK electro-goth post-punk act History Of Guns presents “No Longer Earthbound”, the first taste of their eighth album, “Half Light” out June 20 via Liquid Len Recording Company. “Half Light” was mastered by Pete Maher (Pixies, U2, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails).

History Of Guns was formed in Hertfordshire in 1996 becoming the frontrunners of the UK’s Wasp Factory / FuturePunk scene of the early 2000s. After going on hiatus in 2012, they returned in 2022 with a new album – “Forever Dying In Your Eyes” – then set about finishing an electronic project they’d begun in 2008. The result is this “Half Light” album, produced by Max Rael and mixed by Max Rael and Caden Clarkson with mastering by Pete Maher (U2, Pixies, Nick Cave, J&MC, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails). On this new album founding members Del Alien (vocals) and Max Rael (keyboards, programming) are joined by guitarist Caden Clarkson, the newest member of History Of Guns.

On the album we also noticed a guest performance by Andy Webster and Marnie from Spucktute on “Never Give it Up”, Amon Ásentir & Mark Eris from Xykogen on “Arcadia”, the Arcadia Choir (Emma Mills, Priyanka O’Neill, Sohm O’Neill and Ninotschka G.) on “Arcadia” and Nykky Spectre on “An Invitation”.

Die “Unite & Conquer”-Tour macht Station in Berlin. Es ist Sonntagabend, wir erwarten keinen vollen Konzertclub – und werden schnell eines Besseren belehrt.    

Drei Metalcore-Bands sind gemeinsam auf Tour unterwegs. Es ist ein Abend voller Neuerscheinungen: VINTA präsentieren ihre neue Single “Gift”, die am 03.05.24 erscheinen wird. RISING INSANE haben am Vortag ihre neue Single “Malicious” veröffentlicht und SETYØURSAILS brachten am 12.04.24 ihr zweites Album “Bad Blood” auf den Markt.

VINTA 

Die in Köln gegründete Band VINTA wird den Abend eröffnen. Ihre Musik ist eine Mischung aus eindringlichen Gitarren, elektronischen Elementen und deutschen Texten, die dem stark englisch geprägten Musikstil eine ungewöhnliche Note verleihen.

Die beleuchtete Metallkonstruktion in Form des Schriftzuges/Logos von VINTA fällt auf der Bühne sofort ins Auge und verleiht der Atmosphäre einen Vintage-Charakter. Wir finden, das passt sehr gut zur Musik! Ein Lob an den Schlosser, der das Ding zusammengeschweißt hat. 

Auch wenn ihre Texte meist traurige Geschichten erzählen, ist nicht zu übersehen, wie viel Spaß die Band auf der Bühne hat und mit welcher Leidenschaft sie bei der Sache sind.

Auf der Bühne gibt es kaum genügend Platz, um sich zu bewegen, aber die fünf Jungs genießen offensichtlich jede Sekunde.

Wir kannten die Band bislang nicht. Songs wie “Schon Okay”, “Durch die Nacht” und “Allein” gehen uns sofort ins Ohr und werden jetzt von uns künftig unterwegs oder zu Hause rauf und runter gespielt. 
Nicht zu vergessen ihre Coverversion von “Durch den Monsun”, die Erinnerungen weckt. Fast jeder im Publikum scheint textsicher zu sein.

RISING INSANE 

RISING INSANE ist eine deutsche Post-Metalcore-Band aus dem östlichen Oldenburger Land in Niedersachsen. Die Band besteht seit 2012 und veröffentlichte 2021 ihr drittes und aktuelles Album “Afterglow”.   

Die Gruppe kommt als erster Co-Headliner auf die Bühne und erst dann merken wird, dass sie zwei Headliners je nach Konzert sich abwechseln werden. Das Publikum erwartet nun härtere Riffs und deutlich mehr Growl-Passagen. Das bringt die Menge zum Moshen und Headbangen. Der kleine Club ist bis auf den letzten Quadratmeter prall gefüllt.    

Auf und vor der Bühne fliegen die Schweißtropfen, aber das stört nicht – es wird weiter gerockt und gefeiert.   

Zu dem recht umfangreichen Repertoire an eigenen Songs stehen auch Covers wie “Maniac” und “Blinding Lights” auf der Setlist. Das Publikum, auch hier überraschend textsicher, singt jedes Wort mit.     

Beim Song “Meant To Live” werden die Lampen der Smartphones im Publikum in die Höhe gehalten und im Takt der Musik von links nach rechts bewegt, was eine beinahe romantische Atmosphäre schafft.

SETYØURSAILS 

Nach einer kurzen Umbaupause betritt der zweite und letzte Co-Headliner des Abends die Bühne. Die Kölner Band hat erst zwei Tage vor der Show ihr zweites Album veröffentlicht, welches nun endlich dem Publikum präsentiert werden kann. Exakt am Tag der Veröffentlichung startete die Tour, um das neue Band-Kapitel zu feiern.  

Vokalistin Jules, agil wie eh und je, braucht die gesamte Bühne für ihre ausschweifende Performance.

Hierbei singt, growlt und shoutet sie den Fans in der ersten Reihe und ihren Bandmitgliedern häufig direkt ins Gesicht.

Wir freuen uns, die Band über eine Stunde spielen zu sehen, denn sonst eher als Opener gehandelt, war ihre Spielzeit immer sehr begrenzt. In ihrer Setlist präsentieren sie 6 der 10 Songs ihres aktuellen Albums “Bad Blood”, mit dessen Namensgeber sie das Publikum begrüßen. Natürlich finden auch ältere Songs wie “Nightfall”, “Mirror” und “Fck Off” ihren Weg in die Setlist und heizen die Stimmung gut an.  

Eine Pride-Flagge wird aus der ersten Reihe auf die Stage gereicht und von Jules stolz und voller Überzeugung präsentiert. Wer die Band noch nicht kennt: SETYØURSAILS sind klar gegen jede Form von Diskriminierung und Hass, sie stehen – mit allem, was sie tun – für diese Botschaft ein. Heute möchte das Quartett einfach nur mit dem Publikum feiern und den Abend genießen, denn schließlich ist das der Grund, warum wir an diesem Sonntag hierhergekommen sind. Was uns alle verbindet, sind die Musik und das Miteinander.

YOUNG ACID ist der Name einer neuen Punk-Rock-Supergroup um GREENLEAF-, DOMKRAFT– und GRAND CADAVER-Musiker. Das Debütalbum “Murder At Maple Mountain” erscheint am 31. Mai 2024 via Majestic Mountain Records auf Vinyl sowie digital und wurde inhaltlich von Schriftstellerin Astrid Lindgren inspiriert. In Anlehnung an deren Roman “Mio, mein Mio” (1954) tragen zudem alle Musiker der Band denselben Vornamen als Pseudonym.

Reinhören ist vorab in die Singles “Into The Depths“, “The Crust” sowie “Run Boy Run” möglich.

“You’re the worst of your kind.”
Whippets, hailing from the No Coast (aka Madison, Wisconsin), are a power trio steeped in a fusion of post-punk, grunge-gaze, and deathrock. The band features Bobby Hussy wielding the guitar and taking on vocal duties, Tyler Spatz on bass, and Hart Alan Miller behind the drums. Their sound channels the raw energy and cutting edge of bands like Wire, Jay Reatard, and Fugazi, mixed with the experimental noise of Jesus Lizard, Metz, and Devo. Adding to their eclectic influences are the likes of A-Frames, Spray Paint, Swell Maps, Unwound, Uranium Club, Spacemen 3, and Christian Death, making their music a complex weave of underground rock’s finest.

Now they unleash Splinter, a deathrock-infused post-punk anthem marked by its angular structure, twangy surf and garage guitar riffs, and a psychedelic flair. The track charges forward with manic ferocity, complete with a killer breakdown.

“Splinter started life as a Cave Curse song a few years back,” says Hussy. “When that band devolved Tyler Spatz and I brought the song over to Whippets and created a whole new life for it. It’s more minimal, immediate and in your face now. We like it like that.”

The DIY video for “Splinter” is a raw cut of visual poetry, featuring found footage that oscillates between flora and fauna in states of birth and decay. Interspersed with expressionistic clips of the band, the imagery gets surreal with giant eyeballs and a big ol’ gator head, feeling like a solid throwback to mid-90s MTV.

Bobby Hussy made significant waves with his earlier band, The Hussy, featuring Heather Sawyer (of Proud Parents and Heather The Jerk). Over their 12-year trajectory, The Hussy embarked on extensive tours across the U.S., with notable stops in Europe and Australia. They’ve shared stages with modern heavy-hitters like Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall, as well as legends like Mudhoney, engaging audiences at major events including four appearances at the premier garage rock gathering, GONERFEST.

Beyond The Hussy, Bobby has been involved with several bands including Digital Leather, Cave Curse, Fire Heads, and currently, Wristwatch and TIT. Tyler Spatz, also formerly of The Hussy and Cave Curse, has been a part of Yuka Zolo and currently makes music with Poney and Wristwatch. Hart Miller brings his drumming prowess from stints with Tenement, MDC, and Wartorn.

Whippets hit the road in September 2023 for a U.S. tour with Columbus, OH art rockers DANA and are gearing up for another nationwide tour to coincide with their upcoming LP release.

Out now is the all new album from the Los Angeles-based Dawn of Ashes: “Reopening The Scars”. “Reopening The Scars” is out on Metropolis Records and offers a hybrid of industrial and extreme metal.

Dawn of Ashes started out on Metropolis releasing three albums in the late 2010s, having previously recorded for Metal Blade and subsequently for Artoffact Records. For their return to Metropolis, Dawn of Ashes founder and frontman Kristof Bathory and co will celebrate the release of “Reopening The Scars” at the infamous Dark Force Festival in New Jersey.

The band’s intriguing name, Don’t Get Lemon, comes from a playful twist on Cockney rhyming slang for “don’t get smart,” referencing the phrase “lemon tart.” This choice reflects their sharp, witty approach to music and homage to influences like The Stone Roses and the spirit of the ’68 Paris riots.

The Stone Roses, an iconic Manchester act, famously incorporated lemon imagery into their 1989 debut album cover as a political statement. The lemon, used by protestors during the May 1968 Paris riots as an antidote to tear gas, symbolizes protest and defiance. This imagery resonated deeply with Don’t Get Lemon, influencing their name and underlining their own music’s themes of resistance and speaking out against societal issues.

“We were originally thinking about calling the band Lemon, taking homage from The Stone Roses and the ‘68 Paris riots,” the band previously stated.  “We noticed that searching for Lemon would be near impossible, and there’s probably countless bands called Lemon. So we kept Lemon and added ‘Don’t Get’ to make ‘Don’t Get Lemon’ — it’s a famous line from a movie called The Football Factory which stars Danny Dyer who we use as kind of an inside joke in the band.”

Central to the creation of this world-building art-pop ensemble Don’t Get Lemon are the trio of Austin Curtis, Nicholas Ross, and Bryan Walters, three longtime friends whose combined creative vision has thrust the band headlong into the limelight with their stylish take on post-punk and synthpop. Austin Curtis, with his magnetic charisma, serves as the band’s suave frontman, whose powerful vocals and stage persona are captivating with their mix of theatrical flair tinged with intense emotion.

Nicholas Ross and Bryan Walters amplify Austin Curtis’s performances with their versatile musical skills, shaping the distinctive sound that defines the band. Ross, a wizard on both synth and guitar, weaves the music with dense, atmospheric textures, while Walters anchors the tracks with his robust bass lines and dynamic percussion. Their lyrics, however, make these politically charged anthems of our time, with topics of social media, school shootings, and the general malaise of the 2020s.

Have Some Shame, available now through à La Carte Records and Summer Darling Tapes, was put together in rural Texas by Dan Duszynski of Loma/Sub Pop fame, and given its final polish by Paul Gold, known for his work with LCD Soundsystem and Animal Collective. This lively set of tracks pushes back against the detached coolness of typical coldwave, opting instead for a warmer, more passionate approach the band playfully calls “Heatwave.”

The album opens with the aptly titled title track, which explores themes of authenticity and materialism, contrasting genuine emotional experiences with the superficiality of fame and external appearances. This leads to alienation and the contemplation of the emptiness of public life, emphasizing the need for emotional honesty and criticizing those who lack self-awareness or remorse.

Next comes the powerful Blow-Up, which addresses vulnerability, internal conflict and disillusionment. The recurring idea of imminent self-destruction reflects a deep-seated fear of personal downfall or demise. There is a vibe to this song reminiscent of Combat Rock-era Clash with the repetition, percussion and chorus.

Say Something New For Once expresses frustration with superficial communication and a longing for genuine, meaningful dialogue. This desire for authenticity is coupled with a critique of pretentious or empty literary efforts, yearning for something truly profound.

Highway 59 is an effervescent journey through time and sound, with bubbling retro synths that recall the nostalgic undertones of Survive and Black Marble, coupled with a vocal delivery that finds a unique crossroad between the haunting depth of Dave Gahan, the chameleonic allure of David Bowie, and the resonant croons reminiscent of early-2000s post-punk revival. The presence of the guitars is subtle yet profound, shimmering with an ethereal quality that evokes the peak artistry of The Cure’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Disintegration, with echoes of the iconic Cocteau Twins Gretsch sound as heard in Crushed.

Just in time for graduation season, Pomp and Circumstance packs a wallop of political commentary about the repercussions of gun violence in schools. The song reflects on the disillusionment and frustration of youth in its wake – as well as the harsh realities of urban life, and the sense of hopelessness that can deter aspirations. The tone is one of mourning and deep introspection, lamenting the loss of innocence and the pervasive pain in contemporary society.

Last Chance For Romance explores the tension between professional obligations and personal desires, portraying an internal conflict: does one follow their dreams or fulfill their job duties? The theme of longing for recognition and love adds a layer of emotional depth to the struggle between duty and desire. This is followed by Automatic Gore, a journey from empathy to apathy… and back towards a reconstructed sympathy. It critiques societal norms and power structures, lamenting the inequities of wealth and opportunities; ultimately seeking authenticity in a reimagined reality.

Nostalgia and longing, painted against a backdrop of elemental imagery like wind and waves, take centre stage in The Crest of A Wave. There’s a profound sense of loss and a desire for renewal, culminating in an acceptance of personal shortcomings and a relinquishing of control.

We leave the album with another timely track, Pop Star Salvation, about transient nature of fame and the superficiality of modern success. It asks the tough question: does distinguishing oneself truly offers lasting value or historical significance? A “tear-stained love letter” auctioned to the highest bidder; the personal struggles of tortured poets – all commodified for survival, underscores the cynicism toward the entertainment industry.

Die Black / Death Metal / Punk-Band TORTURERS´ LOBBY hat nach “Reaper’s Impunity” mit “Reptilian Hide” einen zweiten Track ihres kommenden Albums “Deadened Nerves” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Florida, die 2022 die EP “Man in Zugzwang” veröffentlicht haben.

“Deadened Nerves” wurde von Jani Loikas (SVARTKRAFT) gemixt und gemastert und wird am 17. Mai 2024 via Caligari Records (Tape, CD) und Ixiol Productions (Vinyl) erscheinen.

“Wir schreiben keine albernen Songs über jugendliche Vorstellungen von ‘dem Bösen’, dem ‘Okkulten’ oder fiktivem Grusel”, erklärt die Band. “Wir bemühen uns, die Menschheit dazu zu bringen, sich ihrem grotesken Spiegelbild zu stellen und sich mit ihrem eigenen Bösen und ihrer fehlgeleiteten Besessenheit von Grausamkeit, Morbidität und dem Mangel an unabhängigem Denken zu versöhnen. Dies ist eine reale Reflexion der verfallenden Welt um uns herum, obwohl wir nicht versuchen, sie zu befürworten.”
