Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass sich viele Künstler:innen im modernen Metal über kurz oder lang Hilfe beim Songwriting suchen. Neue Impulse sind wichtig, besonders wenn man auch kommerziell die nächste Stufe erreichen will. Ein Ziel, das für THE GHOST INSIDE wohl nicht die geringste Priorität hatte, wie der musikalische Umschwung auf „Searching For Solace“ vermuten lässt: Den von Melodic Hardcore geprägten Metalcore tauschen die US-Amerikaner gegen noch simplere Strukturen, eingängige Singalongs und breitgetretene Genre-Konventionen.

Dass uns beim Blick in die Songwriting-Credits zweier Nummern auch der Namen Cody Quistad (WAGE WAR) entgegen springt, verwundert daher nicht: „Split“ und „Light Years“ folgen stur dem vorhersehbaren Schema des Gitarristen und Songschreibers, der für den zeitgenössischen Metalcore das Radioformat entschlüsselt, aber dabei noch jeder Band das letzte bisschen Individualität ausgemerzt hat.

THE GHOST INSIDE setzen auf Klargesang und Radio-Appeal
Da „Searching For Solace“ dieses Rezept allem Anschein nach als Blaupause diente, bewegen sich THE GHOST INSIDE rund 37 Minuten lang nicht nur am Rande des Stilbruchs, sondern der Belanglosigkeit. Wenngleich qualitativ ordentlich und zugänglich konzipiert, fehlt dem sechsten Studioalbum des Quintetts das eigene Profil genauso wie der Ansatz einer Identität: Stattdessen nudeln sich die Musiker durch süßliche Melodien voller Synthesizer, ohne dem Genre dabei irgendetwas von Substanz zu hinterlassen.

An Bassist Jim Rileys zuckrigem Klargesang in „Secret“ oder „Going Under“ haben wir uns nicht nur aufgrund der zahlreichen Post-Processing-Effekte auf dessen Stimme schnell sattgehört. Es fehlen Kanten und Widerhaken – ein fast desolater Zustand, den wir in der Vergangenheit nicht im Traum mit THE GHOST INSIDE in Verbindung gebracht hätten. Klar, zu simplen Downtuned-Breakdowns wie in „Split“ oder „Death Grip“ lässt sich hervorragend der Nacken trainieren, nur haben wir solcherlei Späße in dieser Form mittlerweile hundertfach gehört. Gleiches gilt für die weichgespülte und daher umso passender betitelte Radio-Single „Wash It Away“, die auch das letzte bisschen THE GHOST INSIDE-DNA auf eine Reise durch den Abguss schickt.

“Searching For Solace” fehlt die eigene Identität
„Embrace the change“, rät Shouter Jonathan Vigil in “Earn It” mit markiger Stimme. Wahre Worte, die wir gerne beherzigen, indem wir stets offen bleiben für Neues. Da uns der Frontmann mit seinen Kollegen aber nur lau aufgewärmten Einheitsbrei vom Vortag auftischt, müssen wir uns diesmal leider in Verzicht üben. Sein Publikum finden wird „Searching For Solace“ natürlich trotzdem, schließlich verpflichtet man als gestandene Band einen derart gefragten Songschreiber nicht ohne guten Grund.

Ohne groß darüber nachzudenken wird bei jedem etwas älteren Heavy Aficionado bei Erwähnung des Namens „Fargo-Pedda“ alias Peter Knorn sofort die Assoziation mit den deutschen Hard Rock Heroen VICTORY hergestellt. Wie der gute Peter eigentlich zu seinem Spitznamen gekommen war hat sich mir erst vor einiger Zeit erschlossen.

FARGO: Pioniere harter Rockmusik in Deutschland
Seine erste Band FARGO gehörte zu den Pionieren harter Rockmusik in Deutschland und wurden bereits 1973 gegründet. Nach diversen Besetzungs-Wechseln kristallisierte sich ein festes Line-up mit Peter Knorn am Bass, Peter Ladwig an Gesang und Gitarre, Hanno Grossmann an der zweiten Gitarre und Franky Tolle als Schlagzeuger heraus.

Und während es Wiederveröffentlichungen gibt über deren Sinn und Zweck man durchaus streiten kann, bietet „The Early Years (1979 – 1982)” Value for money: alle vier full-lenght Alben „Wishing Well“ (1979), „No Limit“ (1980), „Frontpage Lover“ (1981) und „F“ (1982) remastered, das Debüt wurde zusätzlich noch remixt. Und zwar von keinem geringeren als Peter Ladwig selbst. Beim Klang ist also alles im grünen Bereich, es gibt ein informatives 16-seitiges Booklet (leider ohne Texte) mit Fotos und Liner-Notes und die üblichen Einsteck Hüllen in einer Pappbox. Da alle 4 Veröffentlichungen weder als LP noch als CD zu normalen Kursen (wenn überhaupt) erhältlich waren gibt es hier erstmals die Gelegenheit, in das Schaffen der Hannoveraner eingehend herein zu hören.

Value for money und Top Klang
Was sich durchaus lohnt. Zwar sind FARGO vom Hard Rock VICTORYs gerade am Anfang noch deutlich entfernt, wenn man den Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung und die Entwicklung der Band von relativ relaxtem Rock mit deutlichen Blues Rock und Westcoast Einflüssen bis zu „F“ mit dem späteren VICTORY Axeman Tommy Newton (der Hanno Grossmann ersetzte), auf der schon knackiger Classic Rock und dezenter Hard Rock geboten werden, anhört verwundert es schon, dass FARGO nicht erfolgreicher waren.

Die Band musste sich vor der internationalen Konkurrenz nicht verstecken. Die Box ist guten Gewissens jedem zu empfehlen, der klassischem Rock der 70er und 80er aufgeschlossen gegenübersteht. Well done Steamhammer! Wenn ihr euch jetzt noch den genauso schwer erhältlichen VICTORY Scheiben aus den 80ern widmet…

Dass die Spitzenposition diese Woche an NIEDECKENS BAP geht, ist für Kenner der Rock-Band kaum verwunderlich: Nummer-eins-Alben finden sich in der Diskografie der Formation zur Genüge und da macht das Live-Album “Zeitreise (Live im Sartory)” keine Ausnahme. Nicht mehr auf dem Treppchen, aber immerhin auf der Fünf landen ACCEPT mit “Humanoid”. Das ist im Vergleich zu den drei Vorgängern ein kleiner Rückschritt, aber immer noch durchaus beachtlich. Zum Vergleich: “Too Mean To Die” landete 2021 auf der Zwei.

DARKTHRONE wiederum scheint ihre Produktivität nicht zu schaden: Nach Rang 23 für “Astral Fortress” (2022) kletter “It Beckons Us All” nun auf Platz 17. Diese Konstanz können DEICIDE dagegen nicht behaupten: “Banished By Sin” sichert sich die 42 und landet damit hinter dem Vorgängeralbum “Overtures Of Blasphemy”, welches 2018 noch Nummer 22 erreichte. Den ersten Charterfolg darf dafür die Thrash-Kapelle DARKNESS verbuchen: “Blood On Canvas” steigt auf der 92 ein.

Neuerscheinungen der Kalenderwoche 18
Nu Metal gefällig? P.O.D. melden sich mit “Veritas” zurück. Extreme Geschmäcker versorgen derweil DAATH mit ihrer neuen Platte “The Deceivers”, wohingegen die schwarze Szene mit GOTHMINISTERs “Pandemonium II: The Battle Of The Under Worlds” neues Futter findet. Auch THE PLOT IN YOU haben mit der EP “Vol. 2” neues Material veröffentlicht, während WHEEL mit ihrem Drittwerk “Charismatic Leaders” auf das Prog-Publikum abzielen. Weit oben in den Charts antreffen dürften wir außerdem FEUERSCHWANZ mit ihrem englischsprachigen Aufguss “Warriors“.

Ebenfalls neu im Handel: “Marten” von BRUME, “Undefeated” von FRANK TURNER sowie “Infinity Now” von KEITH WALLEN.

Sechs Jahre lang haben sich CRAWL Zeit gelassen, um ihren Sound weiter auszufeilen. War das Debütalbum “Rituals” (2018) noch eine stimmige, wenngleich auch wenig innovative Mischung aus Old School Death Metal, Crust und Hardcore, wurde die meisten Old School-Elemente (bis auf den Sound und ein paar Riffs – etwa gleich beim Opener “Undead Crypts”) über Bord geworfen. Stattdessen sind aktuellere Stilmittel in die Songs eingeflossen, als dass Crust, Hardcore und Groove-Elemente sich bei den Songs die Klinke in die Hand geben. Dazu passend sind die growlenden Shuots von Joachim Lyngfelt (Ex-DECOMPOSED).

CRAWL kehren dem nostalgischen Death Metal kompositorisch den Rücken
Kraftvoll ist dies allemal, wenngleich der nostalgische Reiz des Debütalbums verloren gegangen ist. Das besonders Reizvolle am Modernen mochten CRAWL dagegen noch nicht ganz für sich entdecken. Dafür sind manche Songs einfach noch ein wenig zu unausgegoren oder – banal gesagt – zu “krachig” (“Knives”, “Curse Of The Morbid”). Auf der anderen Seite gibt es dann Tracks, die richtig Spaß machen, wie “Vision Of Burning Apparitions”, das zwischendurch extrem flott dahinbrettert, oder das mit Blackened Punk experimentierende “Buried Lust”.

“Altar of Disgust” ist demnach alles Andere als eklig, aber man musss auch nicht in Ehrfurcht vor einer kompositorischen Brillanz erstarren.

Die Blackened Sludge / Sci-Fi Metal-Band WALLOWING hat mit “Restless Dusk I: The Anamnesis Hymn” eine neue Single veröffentlicht. Der Song folgt dem 2023er-Album “Earth Reaper” nach und ist das erste akustische Kapitel einer fortlaufenden Serie von Tracks, die unter dem Titel “Restless Dusk” veröffentlicht werden soll. Es ist auch eine direkte Fortsetzung der gleichnamigen Comic-Serie der Band mit dem Cover-Künstler Luke Oram.

“Der Song ist ein Stück, das sich schwerpunktmäßig mit Traumata befasst und damit, wie sie einen Menschen verschlingen können. Wir wollten das Gefühl akustisch darstellen, das jemand haben kann, wenn er versucht, sich seinem eigenen Trauma zu stellen, wie überwältigend, chaotisch und klaustrophobisch es sich anfühlen kann”, erklärt die Band.

Die Progressive Metal-Band ERELEY hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Tschechen ihr neues Album “Garden” veröffentlichen.

“Garden” sei eine ergreifende Erzählung über Liebe, Verlust und Selbstfindung, die den Hörer auf eine transformative Reise durch das Labyrinth der menschlichen Gefühle einlädt. Verwurzelt in persönlichen Erfahrungen und Introspektion, folgt das Album der Suche des Protagonisten nach einem Abschluss inmitten der eindringlichen Echos einer zerbrochenen Beziehung.

“Garden” ist nach “Katharsis” (2015) und “Diablerie” (2020) das dritte Album der 2014 gegründeten Band und wird am 31. Mai 2024 erscheinen. Vorab gibt es nach dem Video-Clip zu “Symphony of Hell” mit “Orient Flowers” nun auch ein Lyric-Video.

“”Orient Flowers“ ist ein Stück, das die Reise eines Mannes verfolgt, der sich von seinem Zuhause verabschiedet. Während er durch seinen riesigen Garten geht, erinnert er sich an die Zeiten, als die Beziehung zu seiner Frau in die Brüche ging. Der Text veranschaulicht seine Entschlossenheit, der Vergangenheit zu entkommen und neu anzufangen, indem er die Negativität, die ihn einst bedrückte, hinter sich lässt”, erklärt die Band.

Die Heavy / Power Metal-band HEXTAR hat nach “Nothing Is Eternal” und “Hour of Glory” mit “Crestfallen Hunter’s Tale” einen dritten  Track ihres kommenden Albums “Doomsayer” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album der Italiener aus Venedig, die 2020 mit einer selbstbetitelten EP debütierten.

“Doomsayer” wird am 24. Mai 2024 via Dying Victims Productions erscheinen.

HEXTAR sind Bassist und Sänger Emiliano Zinà (Ex-MISCREANCE), die Gitarristen Marco Scattolin (CATECHON, Ex-AFRAID OF DESTINY) und Niccolò Giacometti sowie Drummer Amedeo Paolini (Ex-SLEAZER).

Die Stoner Rock-Band HIGH DESERT QUEEN hat einen Labeldeal bei Magnetic Eye Records unterschrieben. Dieser Deal umfasst den Release gleich mehrerer Alben – das erste davon trägt den Titel “Palm Reader” und erscheint am 31. Mai 2024. Es ist nach “Secrets of the Black Moon” (2021) das zweite Album der US-amerikanischen Band aus Texas. Einen Höreindruck gewährt die dritte Single “Death Perception” – mit Gast-Sängerin Emma Näslund (GAUPA).

Zuvor teilte die Gruppe die Vorab-Songs “Ancient Aliens” bei YouTube und “Time Waster” bei YouTube.

Aufgenommen wurde die Platte von Casey Johns, Mix und Mastering übernahm Karl Daniel Lidén. Für das Artwork zeichnet PabloRR verantwortlich.

Mit “Dawn of Reckoning” wird am 24. Mai 2024 das neue Album der Blackened Death / Symphonic Metal-Band VALFREYA erscheinen. Das nach “Path to Eternity” (2012) und “Promised Land” (2017) dritte Album der Kanadier wurde von Christian Donaldson gemixt und gemastert und mit einem Cover-Artwork von Alex O’Dowd ausgestattet.

“Das Hauptthema dreht sich um den Zorn der Göttin Hel, die die metaphorische Rolle einer tödlichen Gerechtigkeit gegenüber einer schuldigen Menschheit spielt”, erklärt die Band. “Die Lieder vermitteln diesen Zorn, aber auch eine Reihe intensiver Emotionen im Zusammenhang mit der Hinrichtung der Menschheit.”

Die Symphonic Black Metal-Band DARKEND hat einen Labeldeal bei Time To Kill Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die Italiener ihr neues Album “Viaticum” veröffentlichen. Es ist das vierte Album der 2006 gegründeten Band und folgt dem 2019er-Album “Spiritual Resonance” nach. Der Release erfolgt am 14. Juni 2024.

Out of print for a decade, the fine British record label Cold Spring reissues the cult release “Recoiled” featuring Coil Remixes of Nine Inch Nails tracks on 14th June. This much-demanded new vinyl edition of this legendary collaboration comes in black or coloured vinyl in full-colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve.

Note that the ‘Pallid Amber’ version which is limited to only 100 copies is only available via Cold Spring and this as a strictly one copy for customer only. If you attempt to buy more than one copy, your entire order will be cancelled. This way the label wants to avoid scalpers are getting their hands on this release.

Both the ‘Heavy Gold’ and ‘Solid Bone White’ come in a limited edition of 500 copies. Also available is a black vinyl (with T-shirt of wanted) and a CD in full colour digipak.

Genesis of Coil / Nine Inch Nails LP “Recoiled”

The Nine Inch Nails tracks on “Recoiled” were remixed by Danny Hyde (Coil, Electric Sewer Age) and Peter Christopherson (Coil, Throbbing Gristle) on the demand of long time Coil admirer Trent Reznor. Reznor sent over the original multi-tracks and DATs to Hyde and Christopherson, who independently mixed versions and then met to synch both creations.

It was first released in the 5-track format on February 24, 2014, via Cold Spring posthumously after the deaths of the two original Coil members, Peter Christopherson and John Balance. “Recoiled” is actually based on the fan-created digital EP, “Uncoiled”, initially released freely on The Pirate Bay as fully tagged MP3s and FLAC files of the remixes, including original photography and printable jewel case inserts.

Fans können sich jedoch jetzt schon für das Spektakel aufwärmen, indem sie die adrenalingeladene Show der „Worlds Collide Tour“ bequem von zu Hause aus nacherleben, denn die Show der Band, die am 29. November 2022 im Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam stattfand, wird am 21. Juni auf Vinyl, CD, Blu-Ray/DVD und in einem speziellen 64-seitigen Hardcover-Artbook erhältlich sein.

Während der Worlds Collide Tour spielten Within Temptation 2022 zwei ausverkaufte Shows in ihrer Heimat im Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam (NL). Es waren ihre allerersten Headliner-Shows im Ziggo Dome und insgesamt 30.000 Fans waren vor Ort.

Über die Worlds Collide Tour
Nur wenige Kollaborationen in der Karriere von Within Temptation haben so viel Begeisterung ausgelöst wie ihre Co-Headliner-Tour mit Evanescence. Über einen Zeitraum von mehr als vier Wochen führte die Tournee durch 17 Städte in ganz Europa und Großbritannien und bot insgesamt 19 Performances. Bei dieser Tournee haben Within Temptation und Evanescence über 200.000 Tickets abgesetzt, 7703 Kilometer in acht Tourneebussen zurückgelegt, die den Künstlern und der Crew, einem engagierten Team von über 80 erfahrenen Mitarbeitern, als mobiles Zuhause dienten. Mit dabei waren auch zwölf Anhänger, die mit der Technik und dem Gear für das Spektakel beladen waren.

Auch in der Post-Apokalypse scheint noch die Sonne. Ob deren Strahlung allerdings ohne Weiteres zu genießen sei, ist eine Überlegung, die wir lieber nicht auf die Probe stellen wollen. Es ist nicht der einzige Grund, sich an einem warmen Frühlingsabend lieber im Dunkeln zu verschanzen: Zuflucht bieten uns die SciFi-Metaller CYPECORE, die uns per Zeitmaschine ins Jahr 2124 holen, wo man im Münchner Backstage temporär einen provisorischen Außenposten hochgezogen hat. Nicht ganz uneigennützig, wohlgemerkt, erreichte uns doch erst am Vortag die neue Langwellen-Übertragung „Make Me Real“, deren Ruf wir kaum unbeantwortet lassen können.

Dass wir beileibe nicht die Einzigen sind, die dem Aufruf des Quartetts folgen, versteht sich von selbst. Schließlich ist das hiesige Gelände kein Neuland für CYPECORE, wo man bereits im Vorjahr die Aufnahmekapazität der Backstage Halle erschöpfte. Aufgebraucht ist das Kontingent diesmal zwar nicht – womöglich auch, weil nebenan die grotesken Monsterfratzen LORDIs ins größere Werk locken -, auf die Rückendeckung der treuen Anhängerschaft zählen kann die Band dennoch. Das stellen wir jedenfalls bereits kurz hinter den Toren fest, wo sich frühzeitig eine kleine Schlange am Händlertisch gebildet hat.

LEAGUE OF DISTORTION

Ein wenig anders sieht es um Punkt acht Uhr im Hallenzentrum aus, wo es zu Showbeginn noch ziemlich ungezwungen zuzugehen scheint. Die Lücken im Publikum verwundern uns etwas, hat der Headliner sich mit LEAGUE OF DISTORTION doch einen Support-Act mit ins Boot geholt, dem beileibe nicht der schlechteste Ruf vorauseilt. Die Live-Qualitäten der Alternative / Modern Metal-Band zeigen sich uns dementsprechend binnen kürzester Zeit, als Sängerin Anna Brunner noch während des Openers „My Revenge“ die schwarze Robe fallen lässt und ein im Licht schillerndes silber-schwarzes Outfit präsentiert.

Viel beeindruckender ist aber die stimmliche Leistung der Frontfrau, die schon zum Auftakt mit einem energiegeladenen Refrain ihr kraftvolles Organ zur Schau stellen kann. Mittels satter Riffs und einer gehörigen Ladung Groove holen LEAGUE OF DISTORTION das Münchner Publikum schnell auf ihre Seite, sodass schon im folgenden „Solitary Confinement“ gesprungen und wahlweise auch getanzt wird. Still bleiben will zumindest in der Hallenmitte niemand, was auch den immer wieder hervorkehrenden Nu-Metal-Vibes zu verdanken ist, welche einen Song wie „It Hurts So Good“ durchziehen.

LEAGUE OF DISTORTION wissen das Publikum hinter sich

Während vor den Brettern ordentlich Bewegung in die Bude kommt, lässt Anna Brunner bald ihrerseits die Haare fliegen, wenn sie sich für den Bandhit „Wolf Or Lamb“ nicht gerade den Rotkäppchen-Mantel umhängt. Dazu gibt’s interaktive Lichtuntermalung der Anhänger:innen, welche die Smartphones aber für „Rebel By Choice“ schon wieder gegen die geballte Faust eintauschen.

Dass wir persönlich im Laufe der Show doch ein wenig die Kanten im energiegeladenen, doch schlussendlich recht geradlinigen Sound der Band vermissen, steht im Gegensatz zu dem, was sich tatsächlich in der Halle abspielt: Auf der kommenden Headline-Tour im November dürften LEAGUE OF DISTORTION sicherlich einige alte und neue Fans wiedersehen – jedenfalls werden in der ersten Reihe schon jetzt die gekauften Tickets wie Trophäen über die Köpfe gehalten.

„I don’t want to set the world on fire.” – Dafür mag es im SciFi-Kosmos CYPECOREs lange zu spät sein, der Oldie aus den 40ern ist als Pre-Show-Ritual aber mittlerweile fast nicht mehr wegzudenken. Vorab auf die richtige Gefühlslage einzustimmen, ist derweil das geringste aller Probleme, als die beschwingten Klänge aus der PA dem mechanisch-futuristischen Intro weichen müssen. Dass es in der Backstage Halle gleichzeitig recht dämmrig wird, gehört selbstverständlich zum visuellen Konzept, dem das Quartett auch diesmal wieder mittels aufwendiger Bühnenoutfits inklusive beleuchteter Brustplatten Rechnung trägt.

Immersion ist ohnehin eines der zentralen Schlüsselworte: Ihre Rollen nehmen CYPECORE durchaus ernst, vertrauen in der Folge mehr auf ihre Songs und das Gesamtpaket als langwierige Ansagen und Publikumsbespaßung. Das Resultat gibt ihnen auch heute Recht: Nach dem mächtigen „Neoteric Gods“ öffnet sich schon zum Klassiker „Where The World Makes Sense“ der Pit, ohne dass Frontmann Dominic Christoph auch nur ein Wort verlieren müsste. CYPECORE kennen eben ihr Publikum und umgekehrt: Die Anhängerschaft haben ganz offensichtlich jede Zeile der abwechslungsreichen Stücke verinnerlicht, ganz gleich, ob die Mannheimer nun Evergreens oder brandneues Material aus dem kybernetischen Ärmel schütteln.

CYPECORE präsentieren neues, aber auch länger nicht gespieltes Material

Wobei sich das Set nicht nur auf die typischen Hit-Songs konzentriert: Mit „The Abyss“ und „The Void“ überraschen auch seltener gespielte Tracks, während das aktuelle Werk „Make Me Real“ (2024) immerhin mit fünf Songs bedacht wird. Darunter ist neben der titelgebenden Ballade auch das starke „Pinnacle Of Creation“, welches durch sein abwechslungsreiches Songwriting live zum kleinen Erlebnis wird.

Besonders deutlich zeigt sich das Spektakel natürlich bei den erprobten Ritualen, wo etwa im erstaunlich früh gezückten „Saint Of Zion“ eine kurze Geste Dominic Christophs ausreicht, um den Circle Pit anzuheizen. Dass dies kein Automatismus ist, erfahren wir im anschließenden „The Abyss“, wo der Versuch des Sängers, die Menge durch wortlose Anweisung zu teilen, im Eifer des Gefechts nicht wirklich ankommen will. Immerhin: Gemosht wird im Zentrum unterdessen trotzdem, was der Frontmann schlussendlich mit einem plakativen Mic-Drop honoriert, als wolle er ein Ausrufezeichen hinter dieses Bild setzen.

Seine Performance unterstreicht CYPECORE-Sänger Dominic Christoph mit ausdrucksstarker Mimik

Tatsächlich ist es eine beachtliche Leistung, die das Münchner Publikum hier an den Tag legt, sind die Temperaturen in der Backstage Halle doch mittlerweile nahe des Grenzbereichs, wie wir unschwer an Gitarrist Nils Lesser erkennen können: Zwischen Hitze, Schweiß und Körpereinsatz kapituliert dessen Irokesen-Styling bereits während des vierten Songs. Hätten wir ein Mikrofon, es würde an dieser Stelle ausdrucksstark zu Boden fallen.

Denn was CYPECORE von ihren Fans einfordern, leben sie selbst mit vollem Einsatz vor. Insbesondere Tour-Schlagzeuger Simon Schröder ist hinter Helm und Maske kaum zu beneiden, bekommt dafür in Form eines kleinen Drumsolos, das als Interlude dem umjubelten „Dissatisfactory“ vorgeschaltet ist, immerhin seinen eigenen kurzen Moment im Rampenlicht. Dass selbiges zumeist Sänger Dominic Christoph vorbehalten ist, liegt freilich in der Natur der Sache. Glücklicherweise nimmt der „Commander“ diese Rolle bereitwillig an, indem er seine gesanglich wirklich runde Performance durch ausdrucksstarke Mimik unterlegt.

Die kraftvolle Darbietung CYPECOREs steckt auch das Publikum an

Zu sehen bekommen wir davon hin und wieder sogar mehr als nur die imposante Silhouette: Die durchdachte und abwechslungsreiche Lightshow inklusive vielfarbiger Neonröhren setzt die vier Musiker heute ausgezeichnet in Szene. Einzig während „Chosen Chaos“ scheint heute etwas Sand ins Getriebe geraten zu sein: Nicht nur verschwindet Gitarrist Nils Lesser eine ganze Weile hinter der Bühne, auch der Live-Gesang wird im Refrain von dominanten Backing-Tracks übertönt.

Glücklicherweise folgt mit dem stampfenden „I’ll Be Back“ die ideale Gelegenheit, um sich wieder freizuspielen: Deutete Christoph im Intro noch gut gelaunt ein kleines Tänzchen an, sammeln CYPECORE nur Augenblicke später fleißig Punkte im Synchron-Headbangen. Den ausgestreckten Mittelfinger, den Gitarrist Pascal Oleijnik dazwischen verschmitzt grinsend in eine Kamera hält, gilt derweil kaum dem Publikum, das sich von dieser kraftvollen Darbietung binnen Sekunden selbst anstecken lässt.

CYPECORE fahren die Intensität erst zum Ende hin etwas zurück

Ohnehin scheinen Band und Zuschauerschaft heute als Einheit zu funktionieren, wie die Stimmgewalt der Münchner:innen während des passend betitelten „The Alliance“ nur allzu gut unterstreicht. Zwischen Moshpit und CO2-Kanone zelebriert man den Höhepunkt des Abends gemeinsam, bevor „The Void“ zum Ende die Intensität in wohlüberlegter Weise zurückfährt.

Somit können wir uns allmählich an das akklimatisieren, was im Anschluss folgen soll: der Weg zurück an die Oberfläche, um im Band-Kosmos zu bleiben, wo schlussendlich wieder jeder auf sich allein gestellt ist. Wenigstens die Sonne ist mittlerweile hinter dem Horizont verschwunden, so dass wir in dieser Post-Apokalypse unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf die unmittelbare Gefahr vor uns richten können. Sind es Mutanten oder Monster, die nebenan im Werk ihr Zelt aufgeschlagen haben? Wenn wir schnell sind, schaffen wir es hoffentlich unbemerkt vorbei, bevor uns nach dem Untergang der Zivilisation auch noch die „Arockalypse“ droht.

The German dark electro combo To Avoid has joined forces with the Belgian electro label Alfa Matrix for the release of their new studio album, “All Gods Are Gone”. Before that the label first releases “1989” which is a first taste of what is to come.

The track itself is a reflection on the enduring legacy of the fall of the Berlin Wall 35 years later. Through the lyrics they delve into the complexities of a society still grappling with the divisions between East and West, challenging the lofty ideals of German reunification.

The 9-track EP features the title track “1989” and a 2011 demo version of “Aerial Warfare”, plus 7 remixes of the title track by Erk Aircrag (Hocico, Rabia Sorda), Fektion Fekler, Ntrsn, Proleturan, Sluk Motoren, Synaptic Defekt, and Töt. You can order the download version now on Bandcamp with other platforms to follow.

For the die-hard fans and CD collectors out there, Alfa Matrix also offers a MCD version which is limited to 200 copies and which is normally only available at concerts by To Avoid.

About To Avoid

To Avoid was formed just outside Berlin in 1998 by GrandT and Marc. Musically the band fuses late 80s EBM industrial with 90s melodic dark electro. The aim was to create music that corresponded to the band’s own view of electro and to counteract the increasing wave of future pop.

Later on the duo was joined by producer Cheffe (DJ Starve) and Jean, who from then on also took over the design/graphics tasks in the band.

A first single was launched in 2000, “Aggressive Conglomerations”, and by 2002 their debut album “Resurrection” followed. Two more studio albums followed with the last one beging “Passion And Pain” in 2009 (followed by the mini live album “Live @ Luckenwalde” in 2010). In 2022 they resurrected with two singles, “Driver” and “Trust”.

Now they prepare a brand new album, their first in over 15 years.

Southern Californian outfit Head Cut channels the uncanny spirit of an ’80s punk séance with their latest track, Red Cloud, summoning the ghostly vibes of the Batcave. Imagine Death Cult, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and Christian Death all caught in a blender—Head Cut’s the bartender, serving up a concoction that’s part nostalgia, part revolution.

Head Cut’s new album, Corazón Negro (Black Heart), doesn’t just rock the boat—it capsizes it. Amplifying the raw energy and fiery spirit of their debut, the band delivers a high-octane journey through a labyrinth of personal demons and societal chaos. At the forefront are anxiety and depression, set against a backdrop of tunes that champion Mother Earth and challenge social injustices. In the haunting lyrics for their latest single Red Cloud, a solitary figure treks a dark road, engulfed by the unknown. As ghostly presences watch and breathe from unseen places, a sinister ‘red cloud’ exerts an eerie influence, leading the protagonist to a shadowed meadow under a dim moonlight. This chilling vignette explores fear and the unseen.

“The band’s shared love of the experience of making our first record, the buzz that these individual songs created for each band member, as well as the ease with which we birthed new material were definitely a driving force influencing this new work,” says vocalist Sasha Green.

Head Cut reunited with longtime friend and artist Dale Dreiling for their album sleeve design and layout, which features original artwork by Indonesian artist Ezra Syahdian.

“Balas y Lagrimas” (“Bullets and Tears”) is a lyrical theme that is threaded through Corazón Negro and accompanies the frantic bass lines heard throughout the album,” the band says. “Corazón Negro has various themes but the message is singular: the world is on fire, we humans are the cause; we must love, learn, change, and come together. We must fight for good.”

Head Cut must have downed a serious brew of caffeine (or perhaps rehearsed all their songs to razor-sharp precision) before storming Captain’s Quarters Studio in Ventura because they laid down all nine tracks of Corazón Negro in a single whirlwind day. Die Doomgaze-Band SUGAR HORSE hat nach dem Video-Clip zu “New Dead Elvis” mit dem Video-Clip zu “The Shape Of ASMR To Come” eine zweite Single ihres kommenden Albums “Grand Scheme Of Things” veröffentlicht.

“Nach dem Tod meines Vaters, in der Zeit vor seiner Beerdigung, habe ich eine Menge über sein Leben erfahren, von dem ich vorher keine Ahnung hatte. Er hat in seinem Leben einiges durchgemacht, und davon handelt auch dieser Song”, sagt Sänger Ashley Tubb.

“Grand Scheme Of Things” ist nach “The Live Long After” (2021) das zweite Album des britischen Quartetts, welches aus Sänger und Gitarrist Ashley Tubb, Gitarrist und Keyboarder Jake Healy, Bassist Chris Howarth sowie Drummer Martin Savage besteht. Erscheinen wird das Album am 4. Oktober 2024 via Pelagic Records.

Diesen Releasetag haben sich die Häretiker VERBERIS sicherlich bewusst ausgesucht: Karfreitag. Passenderweise bedeutet der Titel „The Apophatic Wilderness“ grob übersetzt „Die gottverneinende Wildnis“. Dieser Hauch Provokation zeigt auch, dass sich VERBERIS vielleicht etwas mehr Gedanken über ihr Konzept machen, als die meisten ihrer Genrekollegen. Womöglich ist das auch der Schlüssel, um die Musik zu verstehen, die die internationale Formation auf ihrem dritten Album spielt. Denn hier geht es nicht um Songs, sondern viel mehr um das große Ganze.

VERBERIS lassen den Death Metal auf „The Apophatic Wilderness“ fast vollständig hinter sich und klingen in den vier Songs stark nach DEATHSPELL OMEGA circa 2008 und deren Longtrack „Chaining The Katechon“. Doch es dauert, bis VERBERIS wirklich in die Vollen gehen. „The Emptying Of God“ ist ein langes, langsames Stück, das sich schwerfällig und komplex um sich selbst windet. Im Gegensatz zu „Adumbration Of The Veiled Logos“ gerät die Aggression zugunsten einer surrealen Atmosphäre in den Hintergrund. Auch „Labyrinthine Privation“, das zwischendurch schnellere Momente vorweist, ist auf diesen labyrinthischen Pfaden unterwegs, findet aber ein dissonantes Finale, ohne wirklich befriedigende Conclusio.

VERBERIS fokussieren sich auf „The Apophatic Wilderness“ auf dissonanten Black Metal und lassen ihre Death Metal-Wurzeln fast vollständig hinter sich.
Insgesamt ist „The Apophatic Wilderness“ ein schwer zu konsumierendes, sprödes Stück Black Metal, bei dem die Atmosphäre klar im Vordergrund steht, und das in Sachen Songwriting sehr eigensinnig ist. Glücklicherweise nimmt „The Apophatic Wildernis“ in seiner zweiten Hälfte, mit dem Zweiteiler „Arteries Unto Ruin“ Fahrt auf und schraubt sich in Richtung Wahnsinn – der zweite Teil liefert dann endlich die dissonante Brutalität, die in den vergangen 30 Minuten ausbleiben musste. Insofern ist „The Apophatic Wilderness“ zwar recht ausufernd, aber durch die Strukturierung und das Hinarbeiten auf das Grande Finale doch irgendwie kompakt.

Im Vordergrund steht bei VERBERIS‘ dritter LP die komplexe Gitarrenarbeit von Bandgründer DA, der sowohl dissonante Riffs, wilde Leads, aber gerade auch atmosphärisches Picking beherrscht. Dass der Songwriter nicht auf den Punkt komponiert, wird schnell deutlich. Dass er seine Songs aus den Augen verliert, zeigt seine Grenzen auf. Drummer JSM aka Jamie Saint Merat spielt differenzierter und zurückhaltender als bei ULCERATE, ist aber auch hier der heimliche Held, gegen den Sänger NH mit seiner etwas konservativen Performance nichts entgegensetzen kann.

VERBERIS punkten mit starker Gitarrenarbeit und komplexem Drumming, mit denen das Songwriting auf „The Apophatic Wilderness“ leider nicht ganz mithalten kann.
„The Apophatic Wilderness“ richtet VERBERIS stilistisch neu aus, ohne wirklich zu überraschen: Die Songs waren schon in der Vergangenheit sehr ausufernd, die Entwicklung hin zum dissonanten Black Metal mit viel Dynamik nur folgerichtig. Trotzdem war das deutsch-neuseeländische Gespann in der Vergangenheit zwingender und mitreißender. Dass VERBERIS meilenweit davon entfernt sind, stumpfen Black Metal zu schreiben, sollte auch klar sein. Dennoch, von „The Apophatic Wilderness“ hätte man mehr erwarten dürfen. Wer dem DEATHSPELL OMEGA-Sound aus den 2000ern nachtrauert, wird hier aber definitiv fündig.

Today, the NYC-based dream pop act Mahogany have announced their latest release —a 12” single featuring A Scaffold on the A-side and Polyvalence on the flip. This release offers a sneak peek at their upcoming EP, Cumulative Power, slated for a fall release. Both tracks showcase the ethereal vocals of singer-guitarist Jaclyn Slimm, backed by the intricate bass, drums, electronics, and multi-layered 12-string guitar work crafted by band founder Andrew Prinz.

Blending post-punk, shoegaze, disco, and classical influences into forward-thinking, multi-dimensional compositions, Mahogany—comprising the duo of Andrew Prinz and Jaclyn Slimm—creates a unique soundscape. Their fusion of twin 12-string guitars, robust bass lines, tightly sequenced rhythms, and a mix of synthesizers and samplers results in an enveloping experience they’ve d믭 the Hypercube.

“(The songs) speak to a romance of perseverance and canny, defiant idealism — breathlessly driven, yet polished and adroitly serene,” says Prinz.

In a haunting exploration of self and solitude, the lyrics to A Scaffold navigate the labyrinth of youthful isolation and the ceaseless quest for authenticity amidst a backdrop of societal expectations. The song stitches together vivid threads of existential angst, personal growth, and the elusive chase for creative expression, painting a stark portrait of a soul in search of meaning.

Polyvalence weaves a complex web of internal struggle and resolve, using repetition to underscore the persistent challenges of self-definition and mental rigor. Themes of paralysis, inevitability, and victory intertwine, reflecting on the pressures that shape and sometimes pace our deepest joys and gravest battles.

Die Blackened Death-Doom Metal-Band AMAROK hat mit “Resilience” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Devoured” (2018) das zweite Album der US-Amerikaner aus Kalifornien, die (bereits) 2010 mit einer selbstbetitelten EP debütierten.

Jeder dieser Releases erforscht verschiedene Facetten von der Natur inspirierten Themen, wobei jeder Song ein Kapitel in einer Geschichte der Transzendenz darstellt. Diese Bewegungen sind absichtlich in einer fortlaufenden römisch-numerischen Nummerierungssequenz markiert. “Resilience” setzt diese introspektive Reise mit einer ehrlichen Meditation über Verlust fort und bringt den Schmerz von Klimakatastrophen, existenzieller Angst und persönlichem Verlust zum Ausdruck, zusammen mit dem unerschütterlichen Kampf, diese zu überwinden.

EIVØR hat nach de, Video zu “Jardartra” mit dem Video zu “Hugsi Bert Um Teg” eine zweite Single von ihrem kommenden Album “ENN” veröffentlicht. Das neue Album der Solo-Künstlerin von den Färöer Inseln wird am 14. Juni 2024 via Season of Mist erscheinen. Alle acht Lieder sind auf Färöisch gesungen und die meisten Texte wurden mit dem färöischen Dichter Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs geschrieben.

“ENN” wurde gemeinsam mit Theodor Kapnas im Studio Bloch aufgenommen und gemixt und von Robin Schmidt gemastert.

“Mit ‘Terminal Exit’ wollten wir die ursprüngliche, rohe dämonische Kraft abrufen. Wir wollten die Art von schierer Härte erreichen, die nur Death Metal bieten kann. Gleichzeitig wollten wir erforschen, was Grand Cadaver ist und was Grand Cadaver sein kann, während wir uns immer noch an unsere Wurzeln erinnern.”

Bleak Recordings is delighted to introduce Gloom, the inaugural EP from Portuguese dark wave band Decline and Fall, helmed by Armando Teixeira, Hugo Santos, and Ricardo S. Amorim. This release marks a significant entry into the genre, promising a distinct sound shaped by the trio’s combined expertise.

Armando Teixeira’s career, steeped in the pioneering of EBM and industrial music in Portugal, spans numerous influential projects like Ik Mux and Bizarra Locomotiva. Beyond his founding roles, he has profoundly shaped Portuguese music as a composer across diverse acts such as Boris Ex-Machina and Balla, and as a prolific record producer.

Ricardo S. Amorim, author and music historian, first met Armando Teixeira in 2015 while on assignment for an article. Their subsequent meetings rekindled Teixeira’s passion for his musical roots, inspiring him to compose music influenced by post-punk, new wave, and industrial genres. With years of evolved artistic experience, access to advanced tools, and continuously growing technical knowledge, Teixeira’s work now reflects a matured perspective far removed from his beginnings in the 80s.

Hugo Santos, a stalwart of the band Process of Guilt for two decades, where he explored the potent realms of rhythmic intensity and relentless repetition, sought collaborators aligned with his artistic sensibilities. This search brought him together with fellow musicians sharing similar musical affinities. Through the exchange of records—some already beloved, others newfound inspirations—their collective creativity thrived. It was this burgeoning fellowship that laid the groundwork for the formation of their new project, Decline and Fall.

The four songs on Gloom function as the architectural framework of a somber interior space, each track a wall enclosing a room thick with disquieting air. Collectively, these songs channel the spirit of Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, and Fields of The Nephilim, carrying the listener through a stark exploration of the more troubling facets of the human condition.

In Belief, the listener encounters a plaintive reflection on conviction and doubt. Undone unwinds with an introspective spiraling, its lyrics peeling back the layers of self until nothing but raw emotion remains. Gloom, true to its name, plunges into brooding depths, its gothic soundscapes thick with an almost tactile sense of despair. Finally, Europa offers a slightly cracked window to the outer world, its melody tinged with the coldness of space yet reaching for a connection across the icy divide.

The Joy of Elephant has trampled through our aural garden once again with the project’s latest single, Walk Through Flowers, from their upcoming debut album. It’s a wild ride as psychedelia meets post-punk’s grit meets gospel’s heavenly lift. Artist, songwriter, and producer Svein Petter Nilssen, the mastermind of this time machine, keeps proving he’s not just another guy with a studio.

“Walk Through Flowers is about the person you hate to love, told from a second-person perspective,” explains Nilssen. “Unfortunately, many of us know someone who perpetually causes chaos in their own life and the lives of others, resulting in dilemmas and conflicts of loyalty. This song is about those who not only break themselves down but also pull their loved ones into the undertow. The real dilemma emerges when you must choose between being dragged down to ‘help’ them or letting them go.”

Walk Through Flowers starts off in a cozy, almost trippy nook with minimalist flair and then unfurls into a broader, moody tune. Picture an accordion, echo-soaked vocals, and a tambourine setting the rhythm for a folk-infused reverie—sort of like Nick Cave on a deep-thinking kind of day. Initially, the track may give off a sacred, almost hushed vibe, but it soon widens into a gloomier, mood-heavy atmosphere. Here, Nilssen is the lone wolf—songwriter, performer, and producer—relishing the complete freedom of making music without the hassle of juggling other musicians or instruments.

Die Black Metal-Band HELLISH TORMENT hat nach “Dead And Rotting” und “Demons Of The Cold” mit “Into The Abyss” einen weiteren Video-Clip ihres neuen Albums “Hellish Torment” veröffentlicht. Es ist das erste Album des US-amerikanische Trio aus Michigan. Das Album, welches am 28. In isolation, we’re like moths

Isolated Youth’s Ghost Town is the latest sneak peek at the Swedish post-punk band’s full length debut album miserere mei. Born from the after-dark, almost eerie quiet of Stockholm’s empty streets, this track packs a punch with William Mardberg’s Rowland Howard-inspired guitar riffs, a Stephen Morris-like beat from Andreas Geidemark, and a post-punk bass groove courtesy of Elmer Hallsby.

The song captures that chill of meeting someone new in the dead of night and finding a moment of warmth in their company. Axel Mardberg lays down hauntingly crisp vocal hooks that sail over the mix, bringing a bit of cold beauty that feels like a ghostly encounter. It’s a stylish blend of everything from Joy Division’s brooding to Nina Simone’s soulful punch.

Ghost Town paints a moody, gothic picture of wandering souls draped in the dark hues of a dreary December. With fallen angels for company and days dissolving into red, the imagery is as thick as the fog on a haunted night. The tune is a sombre serenade to those lost, wrapped tightly in the wings of melancholy as they search for an escape.

“The track was meticulously crafted in an underground rehearsal space adjacent to a forest cemetery in Stockholm,” the band recalls. “This eerie and haunting setting, characterised by a perpetual cold wind and unsettling fake bird chirps designed to guide blind people, might not have been traditionally inspiring, but it undeniably influenced our music in profound ways. The environment became an integral part of their creative process, imbuing our work with an indescribable essence.”

Known for cranking up the atmosphere at their shows, these guys can turn any space—from snug clubs to sprawling festival fields—into a buzzing hive of ghostly vibes. Isolated Youth is not shy about mixing it up, blending fierce innovation with intense energy, haunting melodies, and ferocious hooks. Their music skips across genres with the grace of a ballet dancer in a mosh pit.
