On Saturday, May 18th, throughout the heart of Manhattan, The Veldt performed not just one, but two sold-out shows supporting Ovlov and modern shoegaze legends Ringo Deathstarr on their most recent US tour. For the uninitiated, The Veldt are one of the earliest and most unique shoegaze bands from the US, championed for their heady mix of dream pop beauty, textured noise, and alternative-leaning soul. The band was founded in 1986 by twin brothers Daniel and Danny Chavis in Raleigh, North Carolina, relocating to NYC in the 1990s while recording and releasing three albums, 1994’s classic Afrodisiac, 1996’s Universe Boat, and 1998’s Love At First Hate, the former which spawned essential tracks such as “Soul in a Jar” and “Until You’re Forever.” These three records remain highly influential in a genre in which Black artists have not had as much representation. The pioneering band is also a true “musician’s band” as well, earning opening slots for The Jesus and Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, and Cocteau Twins over their tenure. with the latter’s Robin Guthrie serving as one of their biggest early supporters.

In 1989, Guthrie recorded and produced an album that remained shelved by Capitol Records until late 2023, when it was released for the first time via Little Cloud Records. The album, titled Illuminated 1989, featured original versions of a handful of tracks that were eventually re-recorded over the band’s career (“Heather,” “Daisy Chain,” “Willow Tree,” “CCCP,” and so on) but primarily featured several never-before-heard tracks, including the excellent rave-up “Shallow By Shallow” and opening track “Aurora Borealis,” which features backing vocals from Elizabeth Fraser. The album also featured The Veldt’s early take “The Everlasting Gobstopper,” a legendary track that was rumored to exist from this era, having first been released on 2007’s White Music For Black People, the debut record by the Chavis brothers and guitarist Hayato Nakao‘s excellent follow-up project Apollo Heights.

Currently, Nakao and the Chavis brothers are joined live by newcomers Martin Newman (formerly of Pulmeri/DRLNG and sporting the same Cranes shirt I was wearing that evening), Alex Cox, and and Clone/Dead Leaf Echo’s LG Galleon. The first of Saturday’s gigs took place at Berlin-Under A in the East Village, a small, oddly shaped basement venue with curious sight lines, but fantastic sound. Due to the nature of the three-band bill and the upcoming Rocks Off boat cruise show scheduled to take place immediately after, The Veldt’s performance was a short, but powerful set that whet the crowd’s appetite and left us all wanting more, the way any good show should. Featured on the setlist were several newer cuts including “The Color Of Love Is Blue,” “In a Quiet Room,” new song “Forever Green,” and the yet-to-be-released and soaringly heartbreaking “Joi,” Two tracks that appear on both Illuminated 1989 and on other releases were also performed, including the dreamy waltz-like “Willow Tree,” performed with guest vocals by the legendary Honeychild Coleman and of course, “The Everlasting Gobstopper,” where every reverb-drenched note rang true. While the band has had a drummer for their most recent KEXP session, this performance was percussively driven by a powerful backing track. Despite the programmed drums (a sound which I tend to adore and favor myself), the sound was jaw-droppingly immense, due in part to the band’s four-guitar onslaught which was full of sonic power the likes of which I haven’t heard in some time. It was a small miracle that seven people (and at least 60 spectators) were able to fit in the space, but the intimate nature of this gig added extra gravity to the performances – it was truly a special affair.

With quick turnaround times between sets, Ovlov and Ringo Deathstarr quickly followed The Veldt and kept the aural bliss going strong . I was unfamiliar with Ovlov, but their Teenage Fanclub/early emo-inspired sound won me over quickly, with a slew of catchy, fast-paced songs. Headliner Ringo Deathstarr were as perfect as ever, performing an intense, high-energy set that mixed classics such as “Swirly” and “Heavy Metal Suicide” with modern gems “In Your Arms,” “Just Like You,” and infectious single “Once Upon a Freak.”

After the show wrapped up, I quickly cabbed over to 23rd and FDR Drive to board a boat for a second helping of the bill, which, while also sold out, felt much roomier than Berlin-Under A’s cramped basement vibes. The sets for all three bands were similar, though The Veldt (minus Coleman this time around) mixed up the order by flight of fancy, which added fresh vitality to the set as we drifted along New York Harbor.

The Veldt are finishing up their tour with Ringo Deathstarr and Ovlov in the coming days, but are performing in Japan in a few week’s time (full tour dates listed below). Otherwise, keep your eyes peeled for this formidable live band wherever you may reside, and be sure to catch up on their full discography as quickly as your ears can absorb it.

Die Progressive Death Metal-Band COGNITIVE stellt mit einem Video zu “Insidious” bei YouTube einen weiteren Song des aktuellen Albums  “Abhorrence” vor. Das fünfte COGNITIVE-Album erschien am 17. Mai 2024 via Metal Blade Records.

Den Titeltrack kann man sich seit einiger Zeit anhören, COGNITIVE haben ein Video zu “Abhorrence” bei YouTube veröffentlicht. Außerdem hat die Band ein Clip zu “A Pact Unholy” bei YouTube geteilt.

“Abhorrence” entstand im Studio von COGNITIVE-Drummer AJ Viana, das Mastering kommt von Ryan Williams.

Den Albumtitel erklärt Gitarrist Rob Wharton so:

“Wir sind auf der Suche nach dem stärksten Track alle Songtitel durchgegangen. Die Wahl fiel auf ‘Abhorrence’. Alle sind gemein und grausam zueinander, die Welt ist schrecklich. Wir hatten einfach das Gefühl, dass der Titel das alles umfasst. Wir haben viel Zeit in diesen Song gesteckt, weil es so viele sich wiederholende Teile gibt, aber es geht hauptsächlich um Depressionen, Angstattacken und psychische Gesundheit.”

This artificial intimacy evolves: learning from every interaction makes the relationship dynamic and responsive Yet, this digital devotion lacks genuine emotion and empathy.

Ethical issues loom large, with concerns about consent, privacy, and the essence of love itself. Personal data shared with AI could be misused, and the relationship’s superficial understanding of human experience might fail to offer true support. Societal stigma and potential manipulation further complicate this synthetic affection. While the allure of AI love is strong, balancing its benefits against profound ethical and emotional challenges is crucial.

This is the crux of the latest offering from the Hamburg-based veteran of the post-punk scene Ruebi. The new song, IRA II, tells a tale about the pros and cons of falling for a robot lover and the heartbreak of loss. The lyrics depict an intense, consuming relationship with a figure named Ira, symbolizing both desire and destruction. The speaker feels trapped in a digital void, longing for Ira’s presence yet overwhelmed by it. This connection erodes their peace and control, creating a sense of suffocation and despair while highlighting the paradox of yearning for something that also causes immense suffering.

Ruebi, the Hamburg-based post-punk and darkwave artist, has left an indelible mark on the music scene in Germany and beyond. While he played a pivotal role in the iconic Pink Turns Blue, Ruebi continues to craft music that pulsates with its own distinct power. His unmistakable basslines reverberate through time, carrying with them the shadowy and romantic essence of dusk and twilight.

In his early days, Ruebi pounded the drums in various new-wave outfits around Hamburg. In 1987, he transitioned to Pink Turns Blue, wielding keyboards and bass, and for two decades, he toured internationally with the band. A stint in London enriched his musical palette. Amidst the pandemic, Ruebi departed from the band to cultivate his solo project, a mesmerizing blend of electronic beats and ’80s nostalgia, proving that his creative wellspring is far from dry.

Ruebi’s life was once a whirlwind of concerts and experiences, with music deeply ingrained in the essence of his daily life. After performing prolifically, he now dedicates his time to crafting music part-time in Hamburg, striving for artistic autonomy. Currently, Ruebi is passionately working on forming an inclusive musicians’ collective.

Today, L.A.’s neo-psych sorcerers Dream Phases unveil Speed of Light, the debut single from their forthcoming LP, Phantom Idol. Due out on July 12, this album promises to perpetuate the band’s ever-evolving shoegaze, psychedelic, and indie rock fusion. The song, a heady mix of swirling sounds and shimmering solos, is bound to make your head spin and your feet shuffle.

Their sound is a splendid stew of the earthy-yet-exalted tones of the Byrds, the Beach Boys, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, blended with latter-day artists like Rain Parade, Elliott Smith, Autolux, The Lightning Seeds, Super Furry Animals, and Flaming Lips. While this impressive lineage is worth noting, Dream Phases bring their own quirky concoction to the mix, translating their unique experiences into something undeniably compelling.

In Speed of Light‘s delightfully dizzying lyrics, Dream Phases spills their souls while grappling with forgetfulness and the pursuit of triumph. It’s a declaration of devotion, done for some mysterious “you,” with no possibility of a return—no U-turns, no comedowns. Our hero is leaping and gliding through the ether, experiencing a strangely serene descent, while rocketing through existence at the speed of light. It’s a cosmic kaleidoscopic ride, where slowing down or turning back is simply out of the question.

“The song is unique because there are many tempo changes throughout, and it doesn’t follow a typical structure, explains Brandon Graham. “Shane wrote most of the instrumental to the song and Keveen was influenced by just finishing Einsteins’ Relatively. I helped with some of the vocal melodies and guitar parts. The song then came together completely in the studio with the help of producer Matt Schuessler. It feels like one of our more unique songs, and is quite a challenge to pull off live.”

Speed of Light is being released alongside a dreamy retrofuturistic music video, directed by Arturo Baston,  that’s sure to send your consciousness into the stratosphere.

For the three musicians who comprise Dream Phases, holding back their musical visions has not been an option. Conceived in the private recesses of their L.A. home base, the trio has expanded outwards by drawing upon the heritage of West Coast pop/rock and skillfully reimagining it for the 21st century.

Dream Phases’ initial flowering was as a solo project by Brandon. After gaining a wealth of experience in the local scene, he decided to fully develop the songwriting side of his talents on his own. What began as a homebrewed project quickly turned into a collaborative stew as brother Shane and compadre Keveen helped him develop his compositions into a full-blown sound.

The sibling bond shared by Brandon and Shane lies at the heart of Dream Phases. “There is a special synergy between us that wouldn’t be there if we weren’t brothers,” Shane says. “We share many of the same influences, but we also have some different ones as well that help make the band unique. We don’t always see eye-to-eye creatively, but then we work it out and end up with something we are both excited about.”

Post-Punk.com recently spoke to Dream Phases about the new music video, their creative process, and what to expect next from the trio:

The music video for “Speed of Light” is truly an intergalactic experience. What was the inspiration behind this space theme in the song and in the video for the track?

Brandon: Shane came up with the music for the song and then Keveen wrote the lyrics to it. He was just finishing Einstein’s Relativity and incorporated some of the ideas from it into the song. Arturo Baston created the video and he has pretty free range as well are fans of his previous work. We basically asked him to create something in Space that was trippy and psychedelic. We love what he came up with.

Keveen: The song was written about Albert Einstein and what he would have written to his younger self towards the end of his life when according to what he said he had the happiest revelation of his life leading him to his theory of relativity. The music was composed by Shane Graham and it felt appropriate to tackle such a heavy subject as well as surreal to a certain degree.

When you wrote this song, did you have a vision for where and when fans might press play on it? I.e. in the car on the way to work? At a small get together with friends? When they’re sad after a breakup?

Shane: Anywhere they enjoy listening to music but good headphones and or a proper turntable setup are extra special.

Keveen: I think it’s a tough question to try to control or even anticipate where people are enjoying their music. This song is probably more of a sit down one and digest the message.

Brandon: Definitely with headphones, and the lights dimmed, in perhaps a spacey introspective mood. It’s a definitely a psychedelic journey and you’ll hear a bunch of trippy sounds with headphones.

“Speed of Light” is just one track off your upcoming LP, Phantom Idol. Does “Speed of Light” give fans a taste for the kind of sound we can expect on the album?

Brandon: “Speed of Light” is probably the most trippy and progressive song on the album. We wanted the first single to be one that hits right away and sort of shows the range of the album as a whole. If there is a unifying connection between the songs on the album then it is through the production. There are definitely different styles on the record, but if you dig “Speed of Light” you’ll probably enjoy the rest of Phantom Idol as well.

Keveen: I think this new new record has a few different tastes and it might be hard to contain it in one flavor. ‘Speed of Light’ definitely embraces a part of what Dream Phases is or where the band is heading to.

Shane: I think it’s just one flavor out of the many that are present on this record but it’s a good introduction into the experience that is “Phantom Idol”.§

PAIN ist ein Industrial Metal Projekt vom schwedischen Multi-Instrumentalisten Peter Tätgren. Was als Solo – Studioprojekt begann, entwickelte sich über die Jahre zu einer vollständigen Band. Acht Jahre nach dem letzten Output der Schweden, steht nun mit “I Am” ihr elftes Album in den Startlöchern. Dieses Mal hilft neben Sebastian Svalland an der Gitarre und Johann Olsson am Bass auch Tätgrens Sohn Sebastian an den Dums aus. Elf Songs sind es geworden, die wir nun näher beleuchten.

Pain starten neu durch

Der Opener “I Just Dropped By (To Say Goodby)” ist ein Industrial Stampfer gleich zu Beginn, der in die bandtypische Kerbe schlägt. Auffallend sind die aggressiven Growls, die dem Song das gewisse Etwas verleihen. Ein starker Opener, bei welchem Mr. Tätgren mit seiner Stimme den unverkennbaren Stempel aufdrückt. Die zwei Singelauskoppelungen “Push The Pusher” und “Party In My Head” überzeugen ebenso, da sie tanzbare Hits für die dunklen Seelen sind. PAIN schreiben eingängige Songs, bei denen der metallische Faktor aber niemals zu kurz kommt.

Das “I Am” nicht mehr alleine aus der Feder von Peter Tätgren stammt, beweisen die Titel “Revolution” und “Don`t Wake The Dead”, welche von Sebastian Tätgren geschrieben wurden. Doch es bleibt also alles in der Familie. “Go With The Flow” hingegen hat das Zeug die Tanzflächen in den dunklen  Tempeln zu füllen und kommt mit den bandtypischen Trademarks daher.

“I Am” in Familientradition entstanden

Etwas aus dem Rahmen fällt der Titel “My Angel” , der mit weiblichen, französischen Lyrics ausgestattet ist. Eine willkommene Abwechslung, bevor der finale Track “Fair Game” beginnt.

Man kann sagen, was man will, aber Peter Tätgren geht mit seinen zwei Bands HYPOCRISY und PAIN zu den einflussreichsten Metal Musikern seiner Zeit. Mit Pains “I Am” veröffentlicht der Schwede ein weiteres starkes Album. Bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass Peter mit Pain bald auf Tour geht, damit man die genialen Sings abfeiern kann.

The legend of the rat king, a grotesque symbol of urban myth and collective dread, tells of a ghastly phenomenon where multiple rats become entangled by their tails, forming a writhing mass. This horrifying entity, often found in dank, forgotten corners of medieval Europe, was believed to signify plague, decay, and the relentless persistence of vermin in human squalour.

The rat king embodies a surreal horror, a living nightmare of intertwining creatures, grotesquely bound together. Their entanglement, whether by filth or misfortune, creates a single, grotesque organism—an unsettling image that haunts the imagination. The rat king is an eerie confluence of fear and fascination; a chilling reminder of nature’s occasional descent into the bizarre and the repulsive.

This vision, in turn, has inspired the macabre moniker of Mexico City’s Rey Rata. Since their inception in 2022, this band has been a disruptive force, consistently upending expectations and forging an unapologetic path with a daring blend of irreverence and wit.

In a world teetering on the brink of predictability, Rey Rata reclaims the stage with their sophomore album, Deleznable. This distinctive excursion through the realms of post-punk and darkwave conjures the essence of the 80s with its compelling fusion of sounds. “Rey Rata’s music is an experience that transports you to another era,” comments Germán Rodríguez, the band’s keyboardist and bassist. “We take pride in offering something unique in today’s music scene, and this new EP is a testament to our dedication to innovation and creativity.”

Channeling the spirits of 45 Grave, Sex Gang Children, Bauhaus, Specimen, and 13th Chime, this collection exudes a minimalist punk essence with eerie guitar riffs and spectral synths.

The album begins with Rasquera (Scratch), a haunting chant featuring methodical guitar rhythms and a desperate vocal cry. It transitions into Malditos Poseídos (Damned Possessed), a fervent incantation that feels like a call for an exorcism. Descontrol  (Lack of Control) moves into dark wave territory, with melancholic synths.

La Danza del Odio radiates a fervent disdain for life’s mundane elements: pets, relatives, band performances, social gatherings, mornings, Mondays, and various types of people. The singer basks in their ability to hate, delighting in the role of a menacing misanthrope. 3AM plunges us into a nocturnal haze of disconnection and intoxication. The singer, moving like a mechanical dancer, confronts their inner demons and spirals into mental chaos. They withdraw from the ongoing revelry, symbolized by a final cigarette, as their mind succumbs to a cacophony of static and white noise.

Poltergeist opens with an unsettling synth before plunging into an ominous bassline accompanied by hushed vocals. Drawing inspiration from the brooding intensity of Depeche Mode and the martial rhythms of Laibach, this track emerges as a darkly seductive anthem for the dance floor. The infectiously catchy Eres Loco (You’re Crazy) continues the theme with an aggressive darkwave chant – something to invoke in your next argument or baneful magic session?

Ritual unfurls with scorched vocals over spectral synths, conjuring the atmosphere of a haunted house rave. The plodding backbeat drives the track, creating an eerie, hypnotic rhythm that envelops the listener in its otherworldly embrace. Muñeca spins an eerie yarn of a possessed and possessive doll. This malevolent figure, lurking in hidden corners, consumes their beer and sends chilling messages urging murder, cannibalism, and the hoarding of skulls. Despite desperate attempts to banish it, the doll perpetually returns. How does one extricate themselves from such a relentless curse? The album concludes with the sinister Visión Disociada (Dissociated Vision), which leaves us vaguely disturbed.

Die Progressive Power Metal-Band HARPAZO hat mit dem Lyric-Video zu “I Am God” eine erste Single ihres kommenden Albums “The Crucible” veröffentlicht. Es ist der erste Release des von Gitarrist Marc Centanni sowie Produzent, Komponist und Multi-Instrumentalist Gary Wehrkamp (SHADOW GALLERY) gegründeten Projekts.

Das Konzeptalbum, das am 28. Juni 2024 via Rockshots Records erscheinen wird, erforscht eine Welt in Aufruhr, in der Technologie und Prophezeiung aufeinanderprallen.

For decades, Raymond Watts, the ‘Lord of Lard,’ has been a pivotal figure in the industrial music landscape, carving out a unique space with his bold and eclectic creativity. His legendary collaborations with industrial titans like Einstürzende Neubauten, KMFDM, and Psychic TV plunged him into Europe’s avant-garde and experimental scenes, setting the stage for his own groundbreaking work.

In the mid-1980s, Watts launched PIG, a project that unleashed a series of albums fusing abrasive industrial beats with darkly satirical lyrics and theatrical elements. This distinctive blend of electronic, rock, and classical influences forged a sound both brutal and sophisticated.

Watts’ unmistakable voice and provocative stage presence make him a magnetic live performer, often appearing in elaborate costumes to deliver intense, dramatic shows. His role in shaping KMFDM’s early sound underscores his influence and versatility. Beyond music, Watts has delved into visual arts and multimedia, tackling themes of decadence, corruption, and the human condition with a mix of dark humor and incisive social commentary. Watts has also written music for fashion houses, including like Chloe, Marios Schwab, Halston and The Row, as well as creating the sound design for the exhibition ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Today, Raymond Watts and PIG unleash their latest beast, Red Room. This audacious album teases, taunts, tempts, and tantalizes with PIG’s unique fusion of hook-laden, genre-bending, electronic-tinged rock ‘n’ roll. It brims with malevolent reverence, glitz, glamour, sleaze, sin, and swing. It’s a decadent delight, a fierce feast of sound and fury, dripping with Watts’ signature style and sardonic wit.

The first single from PIG’s latest album, Crumbs, Chaos & Lies, is a ferocious, growling juggernaut of a track. Its lyrics paint a grim picture of society, saturated with deceit, division, and domination. People are portrayed as dogs, subjugated and subservient, their compliance ensured through manipulation. Themes of chaos, lies, and contempt permeate, presenting a stark reality, while the refrain “life’s a bitch until the day you die” hammers home a relentless, inescapable struggle. Alexis Mincolla (3Teeth) makes a cameo.

Die Sludge / Stoner Metal-Band HORSEBURNER hat einen Labeldeal bei Blues Funeral Recordings unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen werden die US-Amerikaner aus West Virginia ihr neues Album “Voice of Storms” veröffentlichen. Das vierte Album der 2009 gegründeten Band wird am 21. Juni 2024 erscheinen.

“Voice of Storms” sei dabei ein allegorischer Kommentar auf die Misshandlung von Frauen im Laufe der Geschichte. Es ist die Geschichte eines Mädchens, das in die Kinderehe verkauft wird und den Geist der antiken griechischen Jagdgöttin Diana in sich trägt, die entfesselt wird und in einer Gesellschaft, die Frauen als Objekte oder Zahlungsmittel betrachtet, Verwüstung anrichtet.

Aufgenommen wurde das Album gemeinsam mit Neil Tuuri im Amish Electric Chair Studio, während Billy Joe Bowers das Mastering erledigte. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Brian Mercer. Vorab gibt es nach zu “The Gift” mit “Hidden Bridges” nun einen weiteren Video-Clip.

Es ist das erste Album des italienischen Trios, welches aus Drummer Gabriele Marchioni (AFRAID OF DESTINY), Sänger und Bassist Julian Serrato (RESTOS HUMANOS) sowie Gitarrist und Sänger Vanny Piccoli (THE MILD) besteht.

Alle Texte in “Infected Seed” sind von verschiedenen Kulturen inspiriert, einschließlich persönlicher Erfahrungen in der Welt der Psychonautik, die mit den literarischen Werken von Aldous Huxley und Terence Mckenna aufgegriffen werden, zwischen dystopischer Fiktion und psychedelischer Kultur, die auf der hauptsächlichen Verwendung heiliger Pflanzen beruht. Das Lied erzählt die Geschichte einer Person, die im Leben zahlreiche Verluste und Enttäuschungen erlitten hat. Trotz ihrer Kämpfe, Träume und Hoffnungen auf eine bessere Zukunft scheint jede Anstrengung vergeblich. Der Protagonist wird Zeuge, wie sich die Hoffnung immer wieder verflüchtigt, weil das Schicksal erbarmungslos zuschlägt, und bleibt verbittert und enttäuscht zurück.

“Mentes Reae” ist nach “Crimson Tide” (2018) das zweite Album der Finnen und folgt der 2022er-EP “As a Unit” nach. Das Album dreht sich um psychische Gesundheit und ihre komplexen Facetten. Aufgenommen und gemixt wurde das Album von Samuli Raappana, während das Mastering in die Hände von Tony Lindgren gelegt worden ist. Release-Termin ist der 31. Mai 2024 via Inverse Records.

Vorab gab es mit “Domesticated Violence” schon eine erste Single mitsamt-Lyric-Video. Der Song befasst sich mit häuslicher Gewalt und dem daraus resultierenden Trauma und stellt die Frage, wie viel ein Mensch ertragen kann, bevor etwas Unumkehrbares passiert.

Das Album folgt der Reise des Band-Maskottchens “Shepherd”: ein Antichrist mit Ziegenschädel, der eine Armee von 12 Dämonenziegen anführt, um die Erde von den Kriegen und der Gier der Menschen zu befreien.

Die Death / Thrash Metal-Band THE TROOPS OF DOOM hat mit “A Mass To The Grotesque” ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach “Antichrist Reborn” (2022) das zweite Album der Brasilianer aus Belo Horizonte.

“”A Mass To The Grotesque” ist eine dunkle Liturgie für die Ausgestoßenen und ihre Anhänger, die in der Abwesenheit von Licht und der vermeintlichen Diktatur des göttlichen Wortes Schutz finden”, erklärt Gitarrist Jairo Guedz.

“A Mass To The Grotesque”, das am 31. Mai 2024 via Alma Mater Records erscheinen soll, wurde gemeinsam mit André Moraes im Audio Porto Studio in Porto Alegre aufgenommen und von Jim Morris im Morrisound Studio in Florida gemixt und gemastert. Den Vorab-Song “Dawn Of Mephisto” kann man sich nun als Musikvideo bei YouTube ansehen.

Auch die erste Single “Chapels Of The Unholy” steht als Videoclip bei YouTube bereit.

Mission to the Sun’s latest single, In The Limit, signifies a striking shift for the Detroit-based duo, highlighting their ability to transcend their familiar musical boundaries. Renowned for their genre-defying innovations, this track reveals their skill in creating a more conventional song structure, with a focus on beats, drops, and basslines. Despite this transformation, the vocals retain their characteristic darkness, exploring profound themes of time’s inevitability and the contemplation of mortality.

The song has a metallic synth sound that feels rendered by Commodore 64, NES, and Sega Genesis sound chips, creating a retro-tech symphony. Each note, each beat, is a fragment of digital consciousness pulsing from the heart of a microprocessor. In this track, time’s relentless march is not merely a theme but an omnipresent force, bending the listener’s perception. The lyrics, steeped in self-loathing and spiritual liberation, explore the shattered illusions of our fragmented souls. Conceived in 1979 by Matt Johnson, THE THE stands as a quintessential avant-garde British post-punk ensemble, renowned for their ever-evolving sound and pushing creative boundaries. Their debut, 1983’s Soul Mining, melded rock, funk, and electronic elements, signaling their genre-defying ambition. Critical triumphs followed with Infected three years later, then Mind Bomb in 1989. Featuring thought-provoking lyrics and groundbreaking videos, THE THE has retained a steadfast following despite extended absences, always resurfacing with fresh and potent artistic expressions.

Now, THE THE unveils Ensoulment, their first collection of new material in a quarter century. This forthcoming new album tackles enduring themes of love, sex, war, politics, life, and death, delving into the essence of what it means to be human in our times.

The lead single, Cognitive Dissident, penned by Matt Johnson and Barrie Cadogan, features the familiar talents of James Eller on bass, DC Collard on keyboards, and Earl Harvin on drums, with backing vocals by Gillian Glover. This track heralds the return of a band whose influence and insight remain as pertinent as ever.

Cognitive Dissident traverses a landscape where autonomy is eroded by omnipresent surveillance and digital manipulation. The poet dissects the dystopian reality of propaganda and controlled narratives, where dissent is squashed, and the truth is perverted. The verses reflect a world turned upside down, where illusions are curated and the familiar is dismantled. As the unthinkable becomes normalized, the imperative is clear: conform or face obliteration in the age of wrongthink.

“We certainly live in interesting times,” muses Matt Johnson. The world is becoming more inverted, weird and hallucinogenic by the day.”

The visualizer was animated by Craig “Goonzi” Gowans at “12 Inch Media ahead of an upcoming music video.

Written, demoed, and mixed at Studio Cinéola in London, the creative haven of Matt Johnson, the driving force behind THE THE, Ensoulment promises a thoughtful and poignant exploration of these timeless topics. This twelve-song collection marks THE THE’s return to the studio, with the release set for Friday, 6 September 2024, under the Cinéola/earMUSIC label.

The songs were further refined in rehearsals ahead of a six-day session at Real World Studios near Bath, where Matt was joined by long-standing THE THE members James Eller (bass), DC Collard (keyboards), Earl Harvin (drums), and Barrie Cadogan (lead guitar). The album also marks the return of co-producer and engineer Warne Livesey, who previously worked on Infected (1986) and Mind Bomb (1989).

The cover artwork for this single is a previously unpublished work by Andy Dog.

To promote the new album, THE THE  have announced the Ensouled World Tour 2024, the band’s first concert since their hugely successful The Comeback Special world tour in 2018. More concerts will be announced soon.

Es ist das erste Album der internationalen Band, die von Gitarrist Markus Pfeffer (BARNABAS SKY, LAZARUS DREAM) gegründet wurde. Weitere Band-Mitglieder sind Sänger MARK BOALS (RING OF FIRE, SHINING BLACK, Ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN), Keyboarder Jorris Guilbaud (DEVOID, HEART LINE) und Drummer Markus Kullmann (GLENN HUGHES, SINNER, VOODOO CIRCLE).

Hinter HELLBUTCHER steckt der gleichnamige Frontmann Per “Hellbutcher” Gustavsson (ex-NIFELHEIM), der mit seinem neuen Projekt den “wahren Geist des Metal” aufrechterhalten will.
